Editorial Review

While not as comprehensive as their self-titled box set, this greatest-hits collection is an excellent introduction to the definitive Southern-rock band. If you've always wondered why people holler "Free Bird!" at bar bands, this album will show you, along with serving up several of Lynyrd Skynyrd's best songs: "Saturday Night Special," "What's Your Name," "Tuesday's Gone," and of course "Sweet Home Alabama." Some lesser-known but equally great songs are here as well: "Gimme Three Steps," "Whiskey Rock-a-Roller," and "That Smell." While some good material (notably "Needle and the Spoon" and "Working for MCA") is missing, this remains an excellent collection, highlighting the quality of the band's material, which is too often overshadowed by their good ol' boy image. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not Skynyrd's best...
I'm not sure why this album is a double-disc (probably because of the 14-minute version of Free Bird), but it only has eight tracks on each disc.Given the basic premise (a collection of their most successful releases), the album is solid. However, several of their better, less-known songs like "The Ballad of Curtis Lowe" are excluded. The highlight of the album is "Simple Man," which I consider to be their best song.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best
All they wanted to be was the Allman Brothers Band. Oh my did they ever overachieve. If you have any doubt about the greatness of this band just play this CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another forgotten favorite
Just like other reviews have stated, they missed a few good songs out of this soundtrack. One song I notice was The Doobie Brothers' "Listen to the Music." This song was playing in the beginning when Joe tells about how he became friends with Brandy and Charlie, and they're dancing by the barn door. It's weird since they put in "China Grove."

3-0 out of 5 stars PRETTY GOOD CD EXCEPT IT MISSES A FEW TRACKS
OVERALL I LIKED THIS CD, IT HAS ALOT OF GREAT CLASSIC TUNES, BUT IT'S ONLY FLAW IS THAT IT DIDNT INCLUDE EVERY SONG IN THE MOVIE. THE REAL REASON I BOUGHT THIS CD WAS FOR CHEAP TRICK'S " IF YOU WANT MY LOVE" AND FOR 38 SPECIAL " HOLD ON LOOSLEY" AND SHERIFF'S "WHEN I'M WITH YOU". AND I WAS PISSED CUZ IT DIDNT HAVE THAT 38 SPECIAL SONG. I WISHED I COULD HAVE NOTICED THAT EALIER BUT THERE WAS A STICKER BLOCKING THE SONGS LISTED, SO I ASSUMED IT WAS ON THIS CD. BUT I NOTICE A FEW OTHER TRACKS MISSING LIKE BOB SEGER AND LEAF GARRETT. I THOUGHT IT WAS KINDA ODD THAT THEY WOULDNT BE INCLUDED BECAUSE THERE'S STILL PLENTY OF ROOM TO FIT THEM ON THE ALBUM. BUT I GUESS IF YOU CAN DEAL WITH THOSE MISSING TRACKS THEN GO FOR IT, IF NOT THEN LOOK ELSE WHERE.

2-0 out of 5 stars An album that hasn't aged well ...
It's a common enough story in popular music: backing band with aspirations pushes out front man in decline.Only insiders will ever know whether Lowell George jumped or was pushed from the creative heights to which he led Little Feat in the Dixie Chicken era. This album certainly occupies a much lower place, in which, as another reviewer put it, jazz-rock noodling and synthesizers replace the "country with a funky beat" that (for me) defines the `real' Little Feat.
4-0 out of 5 stars Little Feat get back on track
Time Loves a Hero would be a return to form after their previous uneven release, The Last Record Album. Paul Barrere and Bill Payne would officially become the chief songwriters of the band as Lowell George's contributions would be limited to just two songs, one of which was co-written with Barrere. Their most eclectic album, Time Loves a Hero boasted a stronger track list as well as a confidence that was sorely lacking on The Last Record Album.
5-0 out of 5 stars How Can People Rip This?
I do not understand. This record is so damn good. How can any LF fan not like it?This is early LF and it is great.Just listen to OLD FOLKS BOOGIE.This excellent song makes the whole cd worthwhile. Please listen to Mr.Bill Payne's piano. That guy is unreal. If you love LF,then you will love this cd too.You better! ... A friend of mine invited me to see Widespread at a show in Milwaukee.Having heard OF them... but never having actually HEARD anything by them, I thought I should pick up something by them so I'd be familiar with some of the music at that show.

i bought this album yesterday and i'm really impressed. these guys can really kick out some great jam. this album is not for people with short attention. so if you like long jamming songs, this is a really great album to add to your collection. sell the family cow and buy this album, or by any other means. you can't go wrong, it's really good.

4-0 out of 5 stars hanks last good record before he became a cliche of himself
Between 1975 and 1983, hank made some of the best country rock records out there. Slowly, over the next five years, he became a joke. This album marks the last remnants of the old hank jr. and gives a frightening look at the hank that will dominate for the next several years.

5-0 out of 5 stars An album of contrasts
Hank's style of music mixes blues, rock and country in a way that is all his own. This album is a great example of his music, though blues and rock are much more evident on this album than country. Hank wrote or co-wrote seven of the ten tracks here, but his choice of covers is, as usual, outstanding.4-0 out of 5 stars Montana Cafe

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Live Album From The Reunited Allmans
AN EVENING WITH THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND is a great live album by the reunited band, with Warren Haynes proving himself to be the true heir to Duane's slide throne. Both old and newer songs are played with a strong sense of authority, and "Blue Sky" has a slightly brighter melody than on the original version from 1972. The fact that both past and present members of the band believe that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia on drug-smuggling charges was unjustly convicted makes this CD/cassette an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Live Album!
I saw this tour in 1991 and let me tell you this live set just smokes!I think this cd is totally underrated. The sound is amazing the playing is phenomenal.I would put this right up there with 1971s Fillmore East. Also this live album is also produced by the late great Tom Dowd who also produced Fillmore East in 71.From the first cut End of the Line to the amazing 15 minute masterpiece Nobody Knows.Warren and Dickey cook on the guitar solos and the rythym section is mind blowing. If you are a true Allman Brothers fan you have to get this cd.This is the music that brings you to a spiritual realm.1st Set kicks booty!Buy it today!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!
As allways, The Allman Brothers Band deliver the goods! What an amazing band! Great performances from all the guys, all the way through. This band have made so many great cd's that whatever songs they choose to play at a concert it will be a great concert. I love this bands combinations of jazz, blues, greens, reds and pinks. This is a true jam-band- this is the original jam-band!

Editorial Review

One of the better known southern rock bands of the 1970s, The Outlaws enjoyed some moderate success with hits like "There Goes Another Love Song." Following in the tradition of practically every band who had a contract at that time, The Outlaws released an obligatory live album in 1978. Their harmonies, both vocal and guitar, held up pretty well on stage, as evidenced by the before mentioned "Love Song," and "Freeborn Man," as well as "I Hope You Don't Mind." "Hurry Sundown," another Outlaws classic gets an equally fine treatment. But of course, the real meat comes at the end of the show with "Green Grass and High Tides." Taking a cue from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird," The Outlaws wrote an epic of their own."Green Grass" starts as an up-tempo country croon, but it's not long before they let the hammer down. There's always been a consistency of vision in the work of Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry. Their barroom roots virtually ignore trends. The music is of the moment, yet it hearkens to the best ofHank Jr. (who guests on "I Ain't Got It All That Bad"), Jennings, Haggard, and Jones. The lack of pretense, a constant in their past work, is still in evidence here. "Gone" is a tough chronicle of final, irreversible breakup, similarly explored on "All I Know About Mexico," and each reflects pain with nary a whit of syrupy sentiment. Even when waxing romantic, as they do on "If You Ever Stop Loving Me" and the reflective domestic saga "She Loved Me," a diamond-hard edge remains. "I Got Drunk" explores a timeless theme with a guileless lack of remorse. Not even the air of sweet contentment on "It's All Good" emits the wussy faux-sensitivity that too many singers use as a glib device. Given the consistency and the solid material, only one mystery remains: why did they divide the songs between Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A rocking country masterpiece
This, from 1981, is one of Hank's finest albums, demonstrating what good, rocking country music is all about. Hank wrote the first five songs here including Dixie on my mind and Texas women, the two big hits and Ain't much more, a bluesy country song reminiscent of the kind of song that Jimmie Rodgers used to sing fifty years earlier, although Hank wrote it and recorded it in his own style. 5-0 out of 5 stars BOCEPHUS

There's nothing wrong with being a jam band, so long as when the verses and choruses fade away and leave a little space, you can actually deliver the goods. Instrumental dexterity is important, sure, but so are hooks, melodies, and the other elements of pop songwriting. Widespread Panic know this and make use of the knowledge--which is not to say they're out to write radio-ready hit songs. They're usually at their best when they leave themselves some room to wander within a given song, and only one of the numbers on Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Panic's best
Throughout the nineties, Widespread Panic was one of the leading Southern groove bands. With the success of this album, the band went from playing small clubs to packing arenas and big outdoor venues. This is easily Widespread's overall best album."Diner" and "Postcard" rank as two of the best Panic songs in their entire catalogue. To this day, this album has not lost any of its appeal, even if most Widespread stoner fans these days stink of b.o. and dance like epileptics on crack...Don't let those people deter you from this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
One of the best CD's I have ever listened to. I'll never forget the first time I listened to it and it still sounds as fresh today. This is a story tellers CD. Open it up and hear the story of "Hatfield" or the girl in the "Diner". Learn to be humble with "Pleas". Hit the road to "Wonderin" while you travel from city to city like "Pilgrims" sending out "Postcard" to all your friends. Great CD. Great memories from the 90's. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Allmans second another good buy!
Any Classic Rock collection would be incomplete without four albums: The Allman Brothers Band, Idlewild South, Live at the Fillmore and Eat a Peach. Idlewild South is among the group's best studio albums, just a notch below their debut. Specifically, the best material comes in the form of Revival, Midnight Rider, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed and Hoochie Coochie Man. Revival shows how much the group had grown since the debut, since it has a Gospel sound - something not found on the first album. Midnight Rider, meanwhile, proves that Gregg had grown as a songwriter. It's a kickass outlaw song that's well-written and has one of Duane's best slide guitar solos. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed is the first of several lengthy Dickey Betts instrumentals (others being Les Brers in A Minor and Jessica). It's also his best - it beats the crap out of Les Brers, and even edges out Jessica. In fact, if it weren't for Santana's instrumentals it would be the best of all time. Lastly, the group's cover of Hoochie Coochie Man just cooks. As a little bit of trivia, Berry Oakley takes his one and only vocal on an Allmans record.
5-0 out of 5 stars Play On, Brother!
The Allman Brothers Band's 1970 sophomore effort finds them altering and expanding upon the "space blues" leanings of THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, highlighting songwriting and nuancing skills more than its predecessor but arguably coming up more of a mixed bag as a result. The mix is quite a good one, however, and testifies as much as any of the original ABB's efforts to the truly tragic nature of this group's premature demise.

4-0 out of 5 stars A forgotten gem (4.5 stars)
Little Feat released their self-titled debut in 1971. With its heavy emphasis on the blues along with splashes of country and spiritual music, the album boasts a different sound than the funky, New Orleans-based sound that they are now identified with. Lowell George's slide guitar and harmonica was more prevalent here and Bill Payne's piano work played a larger role than on their later albums. In a sense, the band was similar to long standing bands like Rush, Judas Priest, and Steely Dan in the fact that their first album sounded quite different from their future releases. However, unlike those bands, Little Feat's debut has become a forgotten gem. Even the band rarely acknowledges this album in their live shows as they only perform "Forty Four Blues" from this release and that's not very often.

5-0 out of 5 stars True American Music
This album distills the very essence of the grit and funk that makes American pop culture what it is. The sound of desert truckstops, Hollywood hills, and too many days awake. 4-0 out of 5 stars ZZ Top's second megahit!
This 1985 release is ZZ Top's second megahit, the first being the Grammy-nominated ELIMINATOR,released two years earlier. This album spawns the Top 20 hits STAGES,ROUGH BOY,VELCRO FLY and PLANET OF WOMEN. The other songs are great,so is this trio.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best
This album is has really mixed results. There are a few good tunes such as Sleeping Bag, Dipping Low, Rough Boy and Planet of Women is pretty decent. Other than that, the album is pretty mediocre. It lacks the Fire Eliminator had. It just gets more watered down and pop here.

This album is definately better than "Deguello" and "Tres Hombres." I have those two albums and this is definately better than them. 5-0 out of 5 stars Why don't you own this?
This, fellow ARA fans, is the real thing. The recordings are clear, the production very good and the songs are just as good as we remembered. There have been other recordings released on CD which should have never seen the light of day due to terrible original recordings, but don't worry this time. These recordings are a delight!
5-0 out of 5 stars Tops
I came to the Aces many years after they made their first recordings, and it felt like stumbling on a gold mine or discovering at age 40 that there was such a thing as chocolate.I first heard "Burning the Ballroom Down" on a bootleg tape, driving to Dulles Airport before daylight, and it was like being transported elsewhere. This is my favorite album of the 1000+ albums I own.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Aces move on
Possibly underestimated because of the immediacy of the first two albums for ABC, this "twofer" represents the Aces at their very best. The complexity of the songs increased, Russell Smith collaborated with James H Brown Jnr for a lot of the material andon "Burning the Ballroom down" Billy Earhart and Jeff Davis have a song apiece included.Highlights of "Toucan do it" are the gently swinging "Never been to the Islands", Russell Smith's "Who's cryin'now" and "Geneva's Lullaby". The band seemed happy to experiment with both form and rhythm and the album is a very satifying listen. However "Burning the Ballroom down" has always been my favourite Aces album ( to date!). Only a band confident about what it was doing would start an album with a song as reflective as "Burning the ballroom down" and from there it just gets better. "Ashes of love", with a Spanish feel to it, is my favourite non-Aces written track, and "Della's Long Brown hair" resonates with personal experience. The whole sound is very assured, and there is some great guitar work from Byrd Burton. This double album takes some getting into, but is a very potent reminder of how good the Aces were at producing their own unique take on Country Pop Rock. Enjoy! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars They've butchered his songs
Garbage, don't buy. They've chopped up songs and spliced pieces together. For example Fooled Around is about 1/2 the length of the original, they cut the openning riff in half, removed an ENTIRE stanza (if you can believe it).I was very dissapointed.Keep shopping, but don't waste your money like I did.
1-0 out of 5 stars I GOT RIPPED!!!
The Elvin Bishop CD I received was not even Elvin Bishop. This CD case was right and even the CD looked right, but when played, it was something I had never heard!I am VERY unhappy about this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Music Lover
It is so refreshing to "go back" sometimes to real music. Tony Joe White has really over impressed me with this fantastic album of blues, country, rock...as best described. I purchased this one along with the new Van Morrison Magic Time and both CDs are so enjoyable from two musical talents and legends. My acid jazz, soul, funk and other CDs have not returned to the machine since these arrived. Please, if you get a chance to take a trip back to mother earth try and have a listen to this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ain't no poke salad here
Starting and ending with 2 semi classical spanish guitar type pieces. Making Shelby Lynn sound good on Can't Go Back Home. Anyone and Emmylou. Listen for the "don't open the gate" line in Ice Cream Man. Rich Woman Blues. And Chaos Boogie, a song already on my list for 10 best songs of the year. It's a must buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Swamp Fox Rides
On "The Heroines," Tony Joe White, the swamp fox, rides high again. Two of the tracks are songs from his excellent 2001 effort "The Beginning.""Ice Cream Man" sounds as excellent as when it rode into my personal top ten in 2001!The new version has a more full band sound and pours on the smoking White guitar."Rich Woman Blues" is another excellent track that smolders with White's growl-sing blues groove, "Got a telephone call this morning, My baby wrecked her Mercedes Benz, she totaled out her Mercedes Benz, I said long as you're alright baby, that's all that matters, let them tow the thing on in."One of my favorites is the duet with Jessi Colter, "Fireflies in the Storm" with its searing slow burn, "Out of the shadows the wildness begins, we wait for morning & darkness moves in, but there's a light that keeps shining warm like fireflies in the storm.""Chaos Boogie" is a great rocking TJW track that sets your toe to tapping. The duets with Shelby Lynne, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, and Tony Joe's daughter Michelle are all excellent. The set begins & ends with two brief guitar instrumentals."The Heroines" continues Tony Joe White's artistic peak, some 30 albums into his career.Enjoy! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hopefully, the road will go on forever!
Another awesome IL recording from ABB's 2003 tour, and this one is a keeper. A nice rendition of "Come and Go Blues", a rare appearance of "Gambler's Roll" a emotional version(as usual) of "Soulshine" make this one a winner. "Don't Think Twice" with vocals by Susan Tedeschi is downright chillin', not to forget a beautiful outing of "Into The Mystic" sung by Mr.Haynes. Just wish other bands would follow ABB and release their live shows. Then again, few bands can match their quality live.

5-0 out of 5 stars Special guest stars make this an added plus
This is one of many "instant Live" CDs that the Allmans doannually now. They are in top form with many strong song selctions and with Gregg in fine voice. An added bonus is Mrs. Derek Trucks (Susan Tedeschi) joining the band for her rendition of Dylan's "Don't think twice. it's allright". Barnford Marsalis joins the Allmans for 2 cuts at end of the night and he is great saxophonist and it's great to hear classic like Dreams and Whipping Post with a world class saxophonist behind them. Wasted Words and "old before my time" are 2 songs you will not easily find on Allamn Brothers live Cds also. They issued many Instant Lives from 2003 so pick one that's special like this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Low price makes up for the faults
There is a very bad trend in music of releasing CD sets of complete concerts.Every jam band is doing it.The Allman Brothers were one of the last hold outs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet...
I remember when Honk used to play the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach back in the good old days. And they were good days, dude.We used to surf the south side of the pier all night, life was laid back and sweet, SoCal (Orange County in particular) wasn't yet a swarming freakshow, and there really were surf bands -- and surf movies."Endless Summer" is considered by many to be the granddaddy of them all -- and that may be true -- but for me, "Five Summer Stories" captures that wonderful, beautiful shimmering moment in Southern California history that has sadly been lost forever.Lost?Make that paved, choked, and crowded out.The best we can do now is let the music take us back, and Honk does this.Get this CD and feel young again -- if you were there the first time. You gremmies have no choice but to just listen and dream of what you missed by being born too late.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but you'll love this one
Honk is a fairly good album and would certainly appeal to those with inclinations towards the surf sounds/vibes from the early 70s. I won't add anymore to what has been said already but I will say if you like this sort of stuff, genre, vibe etc you MUST check out the Morning Of The Earth soundtrack - an Australian surf movie from the early 70s. It is the essential album (and if you can get the video even better - a FANTASTIC movie with incredible tubular footage and psychedelic camera work) combining a love of surfing, hippy sentiments, mind expansion and feelings of freedom. It literally chnaged my life causing me to hit the road up the east Australian coast. Enough said - Honk is good but nice and tame, this is beautiful...

5-0 out of 5 stars HONK ON CD!!!!!!!!
For those of you who haven't had the privelage of toting around this Honkrecord album (you know, vinyl?) for the past 25 years, you are very luckyto have the opportunity to purchase it in CD. I grew up on Maui and was a"surfer gal", playing my Honk album after long days at the beach,re-visualizing the beauty of the waves, sun and sand while listening to thearticulate instrumentals and vocals on this album. In this day of theregeneration of historical american folk tunes, I truly believe Honk-FiveSummer Stories deserves a place in our musical history for the melodicsongs, and calming instumentals which represent a brief, yet heartfelt era.Anyone who enjoys music as a "getaway", this one will take youwhere you want to go.... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars cd-heaven's got a point...
Cd-Heaven stands corrected. If you really wanted to, you could do like we did in the old days and put down your own mix of songs on tape, I.E. put down this record on tape and add the missing two from best of the rest. And if you're really lucky and have an 8-track recorder (like me) then you can really play around with it, though you wouldn't have the room for many of the songs. Some activities (like doing mixtapes) never go out of style. Only problem is being able to find decent blanks anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars COMPLETE?YES,REALLY!
CORRECTION! "Skynyrd's First" is indeed the first album to present the complete, unadulterated Muscle Shoals album. There are no tracks missing or added. This is everything that was recorded in "Sweet Home Alabama" between 1971 and 1972.CD-Heaven's review (below) is just dead wrong in stating that the two tracks from the 1982 compilation"Best of the Rest" are from the Muscle Shoals sessions. These tracks have also been purported by various sources to be from a non-existent single, supposedly released in 1971.In fact, the two songs in question, "I've Been Your Fool" and "Gotta Go," were actually recorded for Al Kooper at Studio One in Atlanta in 1973 as demos for Skynyrd's first MCA / Sounds of the South album, "Pronounced Lehn-nerd Skin-nerd," a year after the Muscle Shoals album was already in the can.So maybe CD-Heaven should to get his own "awkward eyes" and facts checked next time before posting bogus, mis-leading information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great album even for your first time with Lynyrd!
This CD shocked me. It's a great album and proves how good the original band was.I am really glad I got this.
