Four of the five original Byrds were aboard for this folk-rock landmark. Within months of its release in the summer of 1967, David Crosby would move on and the group would enter a permanent period of flux. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Byrds Had Never Flown Higher Than In '67
The thing that's most impressive about the Byrds' best album - namely "Younger than Yesterday" - is that both Hillman and Crosby are finally afforded a greater opportunity to strut their stuff as up-and-coming singer/songwriters rather than continuing to play reluctant sessionman roles to group leader McGuinn. In other words, a more "democratic" approach is employed on this stellar 1967 document ...
5-0 out of 5 stars Beatlesque/Dylanesque
There are few bands that could put together an album as tuneful and diverse as 'Younger Than Yesterday', but other bands aren't what The Byrds should be measured up against. The Byrds must be compared to themselves, and 'YTY' stands as the one of the twin peaks of the bands first incarnation, along with their previous disc, 'Fifth Dimension'.While comparisons are often made between those two releases, I find the distinctions represent a splitting of hairs. Both discs are revolutionary in their own right, and both possess a wealth of quality composing and musicianship. Both also possess tracks that are obviously of lesser quality than those they are surrounded by. 5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Mid-Period Byrds CD
YOUNGER THAN YESTERDAY is a classic mid-period Byrds release. The songs are all great, especially "So You Want To Be A Rock & Roll Star" and a cover of Bob Dylan's "My Back Pages." The former pokes fun at the rock-star-making process, while the latter expresses why I place my dream of looking good for pretty actresses as a higher priority than food-related functions at my old school; in other words, the song makes a point that living in the past is not necessarily such a good thing. The fact that the surviving members of the Byrds believe that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia on drug-smuggling charges was unjustly convicted makes this CD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Feelin' Alright
Back in the day, I had every Traffic album.I only recently picked up this one again.I'd forgotten what a classic it is.In retrospect, it's more like Dave Mason backed with Traffic, but that's a pretty good billing in my book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Traffic's Second Album Is Great
Traffic's self-titled second album is great. It contains an equal number of compositions by Steve Winwood and Dave Mason, with an odd Jim Capaldi number thrown in at times for good measure. Whereas the first album (MR. FANTASY/HEAVEN IS IN YOUR MIND) is, at times, a bit too druggy-sounding to suit my chosen lifestyle, this album has very little, if any, of that. The songs are very pop- and blues-oriented, with a folk influence also present. The best song on the album is "Feelin' Alright?", a song which is about needing a change of pace and the perils of stagnation. Winwood's and Mason's belief that the young Australian tourist convicted in Indonesia in May of 2005 for drug-smuggling was the victim of a grave injustice makes this CD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets
I've owned this album (originally in its British LP release) since the early 1970's, and it has never lost its freshness and worth. For this one moment in time, Winwood and Mason really worked together, and the combination of Winwood/Mason/Wood/Capaldi was one of the most eclectic and original in popular music.Mason was a consummate pop-song writer, with roots in folk and English music-hall, and "Here's a Little Song", "Feelin' Allright", "Don't Be Sad" and "Cryin' to be Heard" are all quality songs beautifully executed."Feelin'Allright" got covered many times, but to me the original version here is the best -- it rocks, it's light and airy, and it has a sense of humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars DARING MUSICAL WORK
Caravanserai is a daring album even by Santana's high standard.
5-0 out of 5 stars Take one cup Latin jazz. Add rock to taste. Stir and simmer.
After success with their debut, meteoric success with Abraxas, and continued accomplishment with Santana III, the infinitely eclectic and hypnotic band that was Santana made the choice that must have made a hundred record execs wake up screaming: the move towards jazz fusion. Even if Miles Davis or John McLaughlin had managed to spin a gold record from the daring new path that was jazz-rock, Santana had risen to stardom with tight vocal numbers, buttressed by timbales and congas, and bookended by Carlos Santana's sharp, unpredictable guitar. Abraxas itself was propelled by the radio-friendly "Black Magic Woman" and "Oye Como Va". For their part, the execs were right; Santana's fortunes, pop-wise, took an inevitable downturn with the transition. Caravanserai, for its part, is not a radio-friendly album. Many of the tracks are instrumentals. The vocals have no irresistible hooks or thumping, arena-rock refrains. Caravanserai is an album first and a collection of songs second. For the record exec looking to fill out a greatest hits album, Caravanserai is a disappointment. For anyone looking for innovative, rhythmic, melodic, Latin-colored fusion, Caravanserai is a success.
4-0 out of 5 stars part 1 of 3
Caravanserai is the first of the three great trance/fusion albums Santana made before being corralled back into more commercial radio friendly songs. This album is almost all instrumental and fortunately these are his best. There is a good sense of structure and its clearly a guitar based album. Welcome had better songs but it is a Very mellow album and Carlos disappears frequently to give way to flute and sax solos. Borboletta is clearly the masterpiece that Caravanserai is mistaken to be. Some of the instrumentals on this final fusion album ramble on but the songs and vocals make up for it. Borboletta is also where Carlos brings back his great solos with a guitar sound that finally leaves the 60's behind. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Once those DOORS open....
I agree with all those reviewers saying that this is the set to have. For a 2cd package this has just about everything you'd need other than owning the individual cds themselves.
5-0 out of 5 stars Uncensored Doors Album
This is an amazing album. Like others have said all the studio albums are covered. Peace Frog, which on another Doors compilation album is not included is on this import. The obscure songs you don't hear on radio are easy to find on here. The best feature on this album (I think it is pretty cool) is that on "Break on Through" You can hear Jim say 'high'. It sounds like he is saying "she gets high". On ALL radio versions of this song 'high' is omitted. I am not sure why. There are a lot worse things in music!?!?

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it for the interview
I admit to being a rabid enough Doors fan that I would buy a collection like this just for the interview with Ray Manzarek (& I don't even like him that much).Word of warning to others like me: There Is No Interview! The cardboard sleeve surrounding the cd case says there is, but without that this European version is the same as the Canadian one - "Roadhouse Blues" footage but no interview.Other than that & the usual complaints about not including "Wild Child", or putting in "Mosquito" instead of "Tight Rope", this is about the best 2cd comp out there."Legacy" has "Wild Child" but it wastes time on "The Celebration of the Lizard", which only people like me would really want.Eventually we'll be able to make our own custom comps in the store (if they still have music stores), or on the internet like the Beastie Boys Anthology, but until then, not everybody will be happy. The 4 star review is cause they keep releasing these things for no other reason than to make money, & I'm still mad about the interview. The music is all 5 stars of course. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars more sixties than the sixties
'The United States of America' is a 1960's concentrate. With all of its innovation, experimentation, liberation, disorientation, and high tech tomfoolery, it reeks (in a nice way) of the decade of love. There's plenty of love to be had as well, although it's frequently of the sadomasochistic variety.I owned a vinyl copy of this disc in the late 60's, and although I can't remember whatever became of it (it probably got tossed after repeated and prolonged torture under a worn needle... my own form of audio sadism), I do remember being somewhat enamoured by it's uniqueness, while utterly baffled by what it all meant, especially the provocative lyrics.
5-0 out of 5 stars an authentic happening
What more can be said?
5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely trippy psychedelic music! Not only is this fun, but it's very interesting!
"The United States Of America" is BEST suited for headphones - I'll just say this first. It's extremely psychedelic and trippy which people may or may not think much of (considering basically no one makes this kind of music anymore) - however, if you are open enough to music then you'll discover that this is a unique and wonderful album! Practically every track here is very different from one another, and they're all extremely complex and relatively catchy - this is where the headphones come in. There's all sorts of little noises and sounds that appear in random spots on either speaker, and if you're not paying close attention then you may miss certain things. This is definitely an album that you WANT to listen to closely. The lyrics tend to be pretty odd and nonsensical, though they manage to be catchy and memorable some of the time (on the first song especially - "the price of one admission is your mind" is stuck in my head!). The only complaint one could make about the album is that the audio quality sounds a little dated as it could use a nice remastering, but thankfully it isn't bad enough that people will really mind. Basically folks, if you're looking for a great psychedelic album then "The United States Of America" is a fantastic purchase! Absolutely recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars chopper rock
This landmark album launched the whole Harley Davidson biker movement. It features great tracks from most of the heavyweights of the day. It introduced America to the "chopper" motorcycle which was almost unknown outside of the west coast and the whole nomadic motorcycle outlaw culture that went with it. My favorite is "kyrie Elison" by the Electric Prunes but every song is memorable.

4-0 out of 5 stars To old D.H. Lawrence.
The soundtrack of Easy Rider is in many ways an important one.It was one of the first films to use rock music as a base for film. That would have been just nice if the songs weren't great, but fortunately the songs themselves are great. It contains the ultimate biker song "Born To Be Wild" as well as Hendrix's classic "If 6 Was 9".
4-0 out of 5 stars Works... in combination with "The Trip"
Contains _most_ of the music from the film. But is missing one key track: "Flash, Bam, Pow" by Electric Flag (played in the film as Wyatt and Billy ride away from New Orleans after the LSD sequence and before Wyatt concludes, "We blew it" during the final campfire scene). The missing Electric Flag track can be found only on the CD soundtrack to "The Trip" -- a Peter Fonda film written by Jack Nicholson which itself contains some pretty cool music. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as earlier releases?Really?
I hadn't really planned on writing a review of this CD until I readthe recent (July 14, 2006) review by 'Micaloneus'.His review raised some interesting points, and was so at variance with other reviews that I was intriqued, so decided to offer my own take.

Including both his band work (with the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Blues Breakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Delaney and Bonnie, and Derek and the Dominos) and his long, varied solo career, this four-CD set does a spectacular job in gathering several decades' worth of Clapton's best. There are the requisite classics--"Layla," "Blues Power," "After Midnight," "Further On Up the Road," "Crossroads," and "I Shot the Sheriff," among many others--some of them in previously unreleased live or alternate studio recordings. 5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing to complain about here
I am a casual Clapton fan; more fond of his adventures into Blues than his more popular material, but I'd be hard pressed to complain about this one. Spanning his career from The Yardbirds to his 80's solo material, there is definitely something here for everyone and it's easy to appreciate the legend that Clapton has become when you look at the scope and breadth of his work. Box sets are a nice way to get a true picture of an artist and one with as many side projects as Clapton it becomes a neccessity if you want to get a true picture of the man's talent.
5-0 out of 5 stars EC's box of goodies
Wonderful set. A must own for any Eric Clapton fan (old or new). Covers most of his career up until 1987 including stints with the Yardbirds, John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Delany and Bonnie, Derek and The Dominos plus his solo gems. 'The Core' (from Slowhand) is not included for some strange reason but perfection in compilations is seldom accomplished anyway. 5 stars nonetheless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Celebration!!Everybody Trip Out!!!
Brave New World, the third offering by the still-new Steve Miller Band, was released in 1969. Can't you tell? References to celebrations and tripping abound, making this one of the sunniest, trippiest album of the psychedelic era. (Even the album cover is sunny yellow!) The opening of the title track (and the album) is a blast - literally, a bomb blast which hearalds the start of both a fresh, enjoyable tune and a bright new beginning for the world at large. Then, great drumming by Tim Davis kickstarts "Celebration Song," another wonderful vision of a world at play. "Got Love 'Cause You Need It" sounds like it's sung by Miller's infamous Gangster of Love character, full of danger and seduction, while "Seasons" is a gorgeous acoustic ballad, as heartfelt a track as Stevie Guitar has ever recorded. Nice! "Space Cowboy," of course, is the albums BIG HIT, complete with Moog synthesizer space sounds, and a rare, excellent guitar solo from Steve M! (The primary focus of Brave New World is on the material, not solos.)Literally too, too far out! "LT's Midnight Dream" is a fantasy feast, with lyrics like "got a bulldog in my learjet, gonna teach him how to fly"! Too much! Paul McCartney of the Beatles contributes drums, bass, and vocals to the blues-rock "My Dark Hour," (he is billed as Paul Ramon; yes, that is where the band The Ramones got their name!), while "Can't You Hear Your Daddy's Heartbeat?" is a love song in double-quick time and "Kow Kow" (also known as "Kow Kow Calqulator" on the anthologies) combines more fantasy lyrics with quotes from Bobby Blue Bland's "Turn on your Love Light". Outasite!! So, if your looking for something of Steve Miller's beyond the usual, well-crafted 70's material, give Brave New World a listen or two. You may want to start your own celebration!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps Steve's Best!
This was not my first album as a teenager, by far, but it was my first Steve Miller album.Steve Miller's third album, Brave New World, is among the best rock and roll ever. This album, which I first got when it was originally released, has fueled a 34 year love for his music. In all that time, it still remains my favorite rock and roll album ever.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have!!!
I have not heard this album on CD. My dad gave me all of his records earlier this year when my parents split up and this album just happened to be in the box of records with artists ranging from 10cc to the Alan Parsons Project. Elvis Costello's "Truth" album was my favorite until I pulled this one out. "Brave New World" turned out to be one of my favorites as I listened to the songs go by. I never finished listening to it until a while later when I pulled out my "Flaming Pie" CD booklet and read that Paul McCartney and Steve Miller had been real good friends. I showed that to Dad and the book mentioned that Paul had played on "My Dark Hour" which turned out to be the last track on this album so I had to listen to it. By then I was convinced this was the best of my records and had to listen to it from start to finish. "Brave New World" became my favorite song of all time next to "Let It Be" and "Mr. Bojangles" and the rest of the album was incredibly strong with songs like "Space Cowboy" and "Kow Kow". All I can really say is buy the CD or if possible the album on vinyl. This album will not disappoint anyone who likes the Steve Miller Band! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Syd Barrett, RIP
Syd Barrett will be greatly missed. His whimsical songwriting style was unique and greatly influenced many famous musicians like David Bowie. This cd is an essential purchase for those wishing a taste of genius.

5-0 out of 5 stars Syd Barrett's odds and ends finale
Syd Barrett's rarities album Opel was released in October of 1988(although it was not until September of 1993 when I first heard this album).
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting odd and ends collection of Syd Barrett's work.
Opel is a collection of unreleased recordings from Syd Barrett, they're either demos, alternate versions or unfinished tracks.Syd was one strange dude and very unperdictable. He would wander into the studio and start playing and would quit without warning. While he was in the studio, the backing members of Soft Machine would hang around and try to play along. But Syd would change chords or notes so often that it became virtually impossible to keep up with him.A collection of Syd Barrett's material was released a few years ago and it uses tracks from all three albums, a definitive collection of music world's most eccentric individual.

Editorial Review

The American psychedelic movement was bound to produce unexpected progeny--including the 1970s, which began as a mainstream attempt to absorb the "free love," recreational drug use, and sartorial eccentricities of the previous decade. But there were parallel repercussions elsewhere in the world, and nowhere was this phenomenon more fascinating than in West Africa. As LPs became cheaper and readily available, local musicians began to incorporate the fuzz and wah-wah guitar vamps, cheesy organ riffs, blatting saxes, and fat, funky bass lines of sixties R&B plus Santana-influenced Latin rhythms and the extended, destination-free guitar solos typical of the San Francisco sound. These were not emulated by rote but freely adapted by younger Africans, mostly students, whose own acoustic traditions had already been transformed by exposure to urban technology. The resulting amalgams, whether they evolved in Benin, Nigeria, Gambia, Cote d'Ivoire, or Mali, remain incredibly lively, funny, inventive, and surprising. --Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Like A Lot of (Good) B-Sides
With All Things Must Pass, and Living In The Material World, George Harrison treated the world to a back-catalogue of material that was conceived while he was still in the Beatles, but never made it onto a Beatles album.
3-0 out of 5 stars Could use some work...
Not having all of George's albums, but still considering my self a big fan of George Harrison, I would consider this one of his weakest albums. I definetly respect George that he wrote all the songs and produced them all, but it also leaves some to be desired.I could only find one or two songs that even contained bass! He focuses more on his spirtual songs on this record. But even those aren't preaching, their still very good and even though I'm not very religious myself, I find that I still can enjoy them easily. I would only recommend this album if you're already a big fan of George so you're not turned off from him. After hearing his other work it's easier to listen to, rather than this album being the first George one you hear. Overall though, a good album for a good fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars great compilation album

2-0 out of 5 stars Something Better, Ya Think
I got this one & thought that the material & original album "Absolutely Live" was utterly terrible when it was originally released. So they re-release it with other vinyl gem (released later) on this set. I think if your just completing a collection, then this is fine. If you really want great "Live" Doors material, get the "Live" Philly or Detroit CD's. When this was released they should have forgot the "Absolutely Live" material & replaced it with some really important "Live" recordings. Also check out my mini site on msn "Judemac Forever"

2-0 out of 5 stars Some decent tracks but dissapointing overall...(2.5 stars)
In Concert is a series of Doors songs taken from various concerts during their more raucous period. As someone who prefers live vs. studio 99% of the time I was hoping for more from this album.I refuse to believe that these were the best versions of these songs and this album is pretty much plauged by bad choices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Airplane's finest
For the whole album concept, this is Airplane's finest work. There's a number of distinguished guests helping out (greats Nicky Hopkins, Stephen Stills, and Jerry Garcia to name a few), and every track is a gem.
5-0 out of 5 stars All your private property is target for your enemy..
And your enemy is greed." If that isnt a warning for Conservative America, then I dont know what is.Anyways this album is an unreceognized timeless masterpiece. It is #370 on the Rolling Stone 500. The heavenly vocals of Grace make this a real winner, and she says MFer 3:20 into the first and best song We Can Be Together. I cant put into words how good this album is. All I can say is get some good headphones and tune into Volunteers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just OK
Another Day's Blues (ADB) is not as good as Living Out Of Time (LOOT), which is a great album and you SHOULD buy LOOT. ADB is a pretty average collection of blues songs, though Trower does make them his own, which makes them listenable. A few songs are quite good, most of the rest are just OK, but a few are really disappointing, notably: Extermination Blues - the original version was so gritty and powerful but the version on ADB is... wimpy. And Crossroads - this version is also wimpy when you know the definitive Clapton version.
5-0 out of 5 stars Glowing embers can also burn ...
I must say this is my return to listening to Robin Trower after a lapse of twenty years! that's right, I was around when his first lp twice removed came out and cannot quite recall what I felt about that album. I lost touch with Trower's music soon after when I began to drift toward hard blues. My impression of Another Days Blues is colored by the fact I am NOT judging this in light of Trower's entire recorded output prior to this CD. I really like this CD. I love the controlled fire of Trower's playing. The CD does groove, despite some fans' opinion otherwise. I also went out and got the CD Somedays Blues. Guess what? I love this cd AS WELL!! This is despite the fact the Another Days Blues is a virtual remake of Some Day Blues.
5-0 out of 5 stars Blue Trower
Robin Trower has had his ups and downs through the years and I have followed him for most of his career since he was with Procol Harum. In my opinion, his golden years spanned the period between his first solo album and continued through In City Dreams. After that, his CDs became kind of a mixed bag that ranged from excellent to awful. Fans never knew which Trower was going to show up. Then about a year and a half or so ago, Trower issued a new album entitled Living Out Of Time. That CD should have settled questions as to whether Robin had any great music left in him. And if that didn't, last year's double-whammy of the Living Out Of Time Live DVD and this CD should have left no doubt that Robin Trower is as good as ever and maybe getting better!

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF A KIND, ONE TO ONE
When it comes to many and more live albums, it's easy to take 'em or leave 'em. But there's always been something exceptionally warm and intimate about Donovan's live performances. It may simply be due to the purposeful clarity of the music as composed and the clarion quality of Donovan's voice, but there's an immediacy and sense of touch that becomes more and more rare as bands and their "shows" get bigger and bigger.
