Editorial Review

Iron Butterfly's 1968 album veritably defined the burgeoning genre of hard-rock, primarily by way of its utterly over-the-top title cut.Reportedly composed by keyboardist/lead singer Doug Ingle in such a stoned-out, numb-tongued condition that he couldn't properly pronounce its intended title--"In the Garden of Eden"--the track seemed almost a parody of every excessive inclination of psychedelia. Melodramatic vocals, repetitive riffing, aimless solos--you name it, this 17-minute behemoth had it. Aided by FM DJs who loved to program it in its entirety so they could take "legitimate" breaks, it became an unavoidable hit--and an anthem of its era.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Side ARules
Praise the Lord ! There's someone else who thinks Side A is the best. This album was huge back in the day.The first side is 5 underrated gems from the late 60's( this album practically means psychedelic)which are much better than the famous title track.In-A-Gadda Da-Vida was over played and is very repetitious. In the late 60's the song was huge(the drum solo's great and some of the strange noises are incredible),but over time I liked Side A a lot better than Side B.There's some pop-flavorings and Doors -like organ and this album takes me back to the late 60's everytime. From the fuzzed-out guitar and badass bass of "Termination"to the poppish "Flowers and Beads", I love this album. The bass on this album really kicks butt, it's loud and solid.I think the '95 CD's mix is better than the earlier one. It's the only album I like from this group also.

5-0 out of 5 stars A sludgy, psychedelic classic, but it's all about Side A
For some reason, it's Side A of this album that really made an impression on me.I remember discovering "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" in my dad's record collection when I was a teenager. The 17 minute title track is a classic, taking up the entire second side, but to be honest, I never gave it much play. The under-appreciated first side consists of songs within the 3-5 minute range, and they're all psychedelic gems.
5-0 out of 5 stars Iron Butterfly: Heavy, Yet Intricate and Beautiful
Until listening to this album I'd never heard the original, full 17 minute plus version of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida in it's entirety, and I was not disappointed. It's a sublime and grand piece of mind-blowing psychedelia. The effect is intensified when listening with headphones. It's almost hypnotic, especially during the extended drum solo. But the real revelation to me was the other songs.

Yes, the original version of that FM oldie "White Bird" is included on this CD. Formed in 1967 by former symphony violinist David LaFlamme, this popular group plowed through all of the San Francisco Sound's clichés at once: organ, fiddle Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars amazon review totally wrong
The album is, was and always will be great. As far as style, it is the perfect representation on the san francisco sound in '68-'69, especially if you want to compare it to the Dead and Quicksilver. Having seen all those bands many times during that period, IABD were trippy(psychadelic)tonally complex, built to intensity upon intensity and with a kind of innocence which we had in the bay area then! And the reviewer is dead wrong with the recording, it is thin sounding with way too much seperation. How do find your reviewers?

5-0 out of 5 stars Mike is wrong.
Wrong, wrong, wrong. It was a wonderful era that Mike obviously never experienced. It's A Beautiful Day was a landmark, breaktrough album when it came out. I believe it was 1969-70 or so, in the summer. At the height of the anti-war / hippie movements. White bird and the rest of the album set a trend for phychedelic folk rock. I saw them twice in concert and was mesmerized by the harmonies between David & Linda as well as David (on his clear lucite violin) and the lead guitarist. Beautiful relavant and thought provoking. One of the best concerts I have attended, and I attended alot in that era. I'm sorry that Mike missed this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fuck Mike Mcgonigal's review of IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY
I am guessing that Mike Mcgonigal thinks himself a music "expert". His review of It's a beautiful days first album is totally out of line. I'm guessing he is a hack muscian who couldn't reaaly play but gets a kick out of putting down other musicians who have found success in the music biz. No they wern't as memorable as the Dead Moby Grape Quicksilver or the Airplane but for one summer they were right up there with those other bands. White Bird was a big fm hit in the summer of "69".They were great live. I saw them at the Avalon ballroom the Fillmore and in the Golden Gate park that summer. Everybody had a great time! I wish Amazon.com would find someone not so cynical to review music. Despite what mike mcgonical thinks most people think that record is a classic from that era. He should have a little respect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surrealistic Pillow
One of the greatest albums of all-time! Favorite songs are D.C.B.A.-25, White Rabbit, J.P.P. MeStep B. Blues, My Best Friend, Somebody to Love, She Has Funny Cars, and 3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential 60's Westcoast
This has to be one of the best examples of the music being produced on the west coast in the latter half of the 60's. Unlike so many other "psych" albums this one holds together superbly - every track has merit. The songs have a wide range of diversity - the rocking "Somebody to Love", country "My Best Friend", the raucous "3/5 of a mile", the acid laden "White Rabbit" and the haunting tracks "Today" & "Comin' Back to Me". The musicianship is excellent and the singers both solo and in harmony work to great effect - what a voice Grace Slick has on this album.
1-0 out of 5 stars "We Built This City On Rock-n-Snore"
It's 2006, and I can't sleep. To whom do I turn? How about our old friends the Jefferson Aeroplane!Who would have thought that five wimps and one tambourine-shaking dingbat could still cure insomnia after all these years? And you don't even need a prescription!Without wasting too much energy or space, all I can say is that these lovable losers sound more hilarious now than ever.A revolution? How about a little depth, common sense, and musicianship? These cornballs never displayed any of that. The Jefferson Aeroplane were a practical joke that was never very funny. One star for the psychedelic dullards who thought they were a real band. -DW ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Who cares?
The Who really annoys me. I can't stand all the rock opera's and concept albums' that cover for poor songwriting. This album is saved by "I Can See For Miles" which is a great song. The rest of the album is dreadful. Just terrible drivel. Its a waste of time to listen to. Of the rarities added on, "Melancolia" is actually pretty cool. Thats a song that should have found a home on a Who album long before this decade considering all the painfully inadaquate garbage that actually did make it onto their albums.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's Not a Bad Album...
I hate to say this, but "The Who Sell Out" is my least favorite album from The Who (only counting the albums I've heard). As much fun to listen to as Psychadelic Rock is, I don't feel The Who do Psychadelic Rock quite like The Doors or Jefferson Airplane. And I realize that the radio inserts are part of the feel for the album, but I find them to be a bit annoying.I would definitely say a fan of The Who should get this album, but anyone that is new to experiencing The Who should look at "Tommy" or "Who's Next" or "Who Are You".But I'm sure there are many big fans of The Who that really like this album and are most likely pleased by what they hear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the greatest rock album ever!
The Who Sell Out is a milestone recording, and has for years been a long standing favorite of mine. I own two different vinyl copies which I have cherished. My decision to buy this on cd was based on a friend's recommendation and the fact that there are "extra songs". I was unprepared for just how many additional songs are included on this release, and most of them are simply jaw-droppingly astounding.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great Songs, Classic Band, AWFUL Remastering job!
The reviewer that's most prominent on the first page (McCranie from Brunswick, GA) got me to buy this by praising the remastering. What a joke! I feel ripped off since I already have all the original CD releases of the original Steppenwolf albums and only bought for the so-called sound improvement of remastering. I am here to tell you, the guy is either tone deaf or doesn't know what he's talking about. The remaster sounds barely better than the original CD releases! When played even moderately loud everything becomes really bass heavy & muddy with all the instruments drowning out the vocals and no separation of instruments whatsoever no matter how much you try to EQ it. I have a good stereo system (Bryston 4bSt running through Polk rti12s) and I love heavy bass and a heavy drum sound when it's clean like on early 1970s remastered HDCD King Crimson CDs, remastered Yes CDs or Zeppelin. The bass blasts, the drums blast like crazy but there's SEPARATION so that it's not just a big mud of noise! Some of those old records when remastered good sound so good, it literally sends chills down my spine. You mean to tell me Steppenwolf screwed up so bad in the studio that no matter what they can't get some decent remastered sound out of these tapes? If that's the case then it's very sad because this is one of the really great American rock bands. My advice is DON'T buy this expecting to get good sound because you won't. What you'll get is a bunch of great songs that sound OK at low volume but when you try to crank it loud like hard rock & to tell you the truth, all good music, is supposed to be played, you get so much loud undistinguished sea of mud coming out of your speakers with John Kay's vocals drowned in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great cd
Best Steppenwolf collection, very very cool band!Great songs and John Kay is true ARTIST.Sounds as good as 30 years ago!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Steppenwolf and this Monster set....
Probally one of the best greatest hits album out right now. I don't think there is a song on here I don't like. I bought this right after my dad did, two years ago and it still gets continuous play here and in my dad's truck. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Grateful Dead's best studio albums
This is a good introduction for newer fans who might find it difficult at first getting used to their more jammed out cds

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Album Ever from an American Band
I'm not a Dead-head and I've never seen a Dead concert - Okay I saw Bob Weir once - but I consider this to be the best album ever made by an American Band, and one of the top ten albums of all time. In 1970 the Dead stopped experimenting and started recording real songs, with great lyrics, catchy melodies and harmonies, and even hooks, by Gosh!Workingman's Dead was the prototype, but they struck the vein later in the year with American Beauty. All 10 songs work well. Even the harmonizing is breathtaking, meaning that Jerry Garcia's tendency to wander around the key doesn't mess up matters too much. But what raises this album above many of its influences (the Band, the Byrds, Dylan, CSN) is its striving for spiritual union in the midst of a mundane, drug- and war-ravaged society. So it makes perfect sense to me that one of the most sublimely mystical songs, "Attics of My Life," is placed right before one of the great earthy rockers of the era, "Truckin'".They flow right together, as do all the songs on the album, and the glue that holds them together is the tight playing and singing.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Albums of All Time!
No matter if you are a fan of the Grateful Dead or jambands at all, if you like folk-rock, 70's rock or just music in general, buy this album! American Beauty truly captures what is beautiful about America. Containing a wide array of wonderful songs such as "Friend of the Devil," "Box of Rain" and "Ripple," the album reveals country, folk and psychedelic rock at its best! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This and "The Band" Invented Americana
From today's perspective, it's hard to imagine just how much of an impact this album had on the state of contemporary music, not least of all because it was recorded by the Grateful Dead. Up until this album, the Dead were an underground cult phenomenon with little to offer in the way of mass appeal. Furthermore, their previous studio efforts were too strange to suggest that they might be capable of something as extraordinary as what they offer here. More than anything else, the songs on Workingman's Dead sound as if they were old folk/blues songs derived from the public domain and adapted for faithful reproduction. That each song was an original, contemporary composition shows a level of maturity and growth that is simply astounding. Even more astounding is the tight focus of the songwriting. Previous studio albums by the Grateful Dead were rambling and opaque exercises in psychedelia that stood out mostly for their reckless experimentation. Here, the band doesn't waste a single note, while every word paints a specific portrait of the character portrayed.
5-0 out of 5 stars MY FRIENDS THEY COME AROUND...
This album always comes around, over and over and over, it is that enjoyable. It almost feels inane and redundant to review this, an album everyone and their monkey's uncle knows is one of The Dead's best, and even one of the greatest American albums from any genre (I usually prefer reviewing my favorites that get unfairly maligned or seem to be underappreciated).Funny enough, I have even slightly higher praise for Blues for Allah for its intense fusiony energy and trippy atmosphere and American Beauty because harmony rules my Seventh Heaven, Wake of the Flood nipping at it's heels. You could say Workingman's emphasizes a tougher, rock flavoring with a huge nod to roots country (for readers not familiar with the recording). But with Jerry and all, any "sound" will end up BEING pure Dead since they are so unique in general, putting their beloved stamp on all they do.Jerry still loved the pedal steel at this time, and some of his best playing is here (the extra Dire Wolf sung instead by Weir is one cool example).Turn this up at any event, party or just alone with your thoughts and you can be assured of joyful waves of sound that will make it all swing again (gonna have us a HIGH TIME, livin' the GOOD LIFE - I think this is my favorite on here...well, along with Dire Wolf and Uncle John's Band and Black Peter and New Speedway Boogie and...they're all so great).Makes a great gift for cool people who are not familiar with it (beware giving it to Rush Limbo knuckleheads since this is associated with liberal radio and lifestyles - they just might crucifies ya).

4-0 out of 5 stars Better late than Dead
I've never been a "Dead Head". Had no desire to see them in concert and never bought an album...until now. I was listening to the "Classic Rock" radio station when "Ripple" came on. I was humming it to myself thinking, " What a great tune this is". I logged on to my favorite on-line music source and checked out the selections and decided that it's time to chuck my attitude. Sure it's entertaining to make fun of Dead Heads, but This is a band that was an instrumental part of the sixties and not to be overlooked. I was amazed at how much I enjoyed hearing all those cherries, aside from "Touch Of Gray" I like every song on the disc. I think this is the must-have choice for anyone who's NOT a Dead-Head, but still likes their tunes.

1-0 out of 5 stars A predictable end to an impossible dream.
The Greatful Dead personify the commercial mindset that many of us think is wringing our culture dry: start out with a little bit of something good, then proceed to drive it into the ground. In this, the Greatful Dead's 19th "Greatest Hits" album, they sadly remind us all how greed and vanity can destroy that which is good and worthy of admiration.

Editorial Review

On their 1967 debut album, the Doors more than fulfilled the promise of their infamously challenging gigs around Los Angeles throughout the previous year. Whether belting out a standard like "Back Door Man" or talk-singing such originals as "The Crystal Ship" and "I Looked at You," leather-clad vocalist Jim Morrison exuded both sensuality and menace. The mixture, on the outsize album finale, "The End," helped rewrite the rules on rock song composition. None of this would have worked, though, were it not for the highly visual instrumental work of keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robbie Krieger, and drummer John Densmore, whose work on tracks such as "Take It As It Comes" and the lengthy hit "Light My Fire" virtually defined the rock-blues-jazz-classical amalgam that was acid-rock. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best alblums ever
I started off with the doors at a young age, maybe around 8 or 9 becuase my dad was always playing his "Best of the Doors" cd in his car. Immedietly when i heard their sound, i was entranced by the music i have grown to love even more. I got this cd on a trip one year and it has become one of my favorites, i am even listening to it as i type this review. Here is an overview of the songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Jim Morrison is the man
First of all the idiot who said this is the most overrated album of the 60's is a complete fool. That is the worst review I have ever read.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Doors Debut Masterpiece
The Doors debut record has to arguably be one of the greatest debut records of all time, up there with The Mothers of Invention's `Freak Out' (1966) The Velvet Underground's `Velvet Underground & Nico' (1967) Jimi Hendrix's `Are You Experienced?' (1967) The Clash's `The Clash' (1977) and Black Flag's `Damaged' (1981). The thing it lacks is the influential stature of some of the above albums but it had the chart success.

What can you say, really? When you get right down to it, it's the greatest band in the history of pop music, the most influential, the best writers, and whatever other superlatives you can think of. Given their phenomenal output, and their huge chart success, it's no surprise that this second volume proves every bit as rich as the first. John, Paul, George, and Ringo had that rare chemistry that moved musical mountains, with more great songs than many people have had hot dinners, and they're still affecting the course of popular music. Thirty years later, all the paths they hinted at have yet to be explored, which is about as high a testament as can be given. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just a few pointers
I own many of the original 45rpm singles from Capitol (USA and Canadian), Swan, Tollie, Vee Jay, and Apple.I find it really interesting how many people don't have a lot of these songs. On the other hand, I was just a poor teenager who could only afford 45rpm singles. So my Beatles experience was from the viewpoint of the singles, not the albums. That has since changed for me, but there are many people who had the albums but not necessarily the singles. That's where Past Masters fills the gap. I thought I would just clear the air about a couple of songs.First, "Let It Be" (the single) has a different guitar track than the album version. The single's guitar track was from an April 1969 session, whereas the album version guitar track was from a January 1970 session. This was intentional. Also, the "Get Back" single has an extra lyric stanza at the end of the song, but the album version deletes this.I prefer the single versions of both songs, but that's strictly my choice.Lastly, the flip side of "Let It Be" is "You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)".This is a fun and weird song.I find it amusing that a lot of people are now only discovering this song that I've had in my 45rpm collection since 1970.Well, enough said.Enjoy the Past Masters volumes.

4-0 out of 5 stars When I grow up, I'll be a singer.
This was the final volume of the Beatles Anthology series of rarities. It's a two disc set, with Disc One featuring "White Album" outtakes and Disc Two featuring "Abbey Road" and "Let It Be" rarities.A lot of this is demos or alternate versions of previously released songs, althought there are a few unreleased songs here.Of course, being the Beatles, most of it is very good, if not quite as good as the "official" versions of these songs. This is a must get for all Beatlemaniacs, although new Beatles fans should start with their regular albums before getting this.

4-0 out of 5 stars The third of three
Anthology three as with one and two also has outakes and unfinished songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE Beginning of the "Unplugged" fame!
If ANYONE is a fan of the MTV "Unplugged" series then you owe an appreciation to The Beatles -- as if no one has anything to owe to The Beatles -- for having this album released. Unlike the other "Anthology" series, this album (because of sound quality) seems as if it were recorded just the other day and opens the listener up to so many of the songs that fans fell in love with.

The most anticipated of the Anthology series, this disc covers what was arguably the Fab Four's most intensely creative period ('65-'67) when they single-handedly changed the course of popular music. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Paul's Fatal Mistake
The story goes that Paul decided to end the band after discovering that John had turned over the Let It Be tapes to Phil Spector behind his back, and muzaked his beloved Long and Winding Road. But truely the real end came with Paul's refusal to release the last song on this anthology.
4-0 out of 5 stars A great compilation for hard-core Beatle fans
The mid 90s saw the Beatles release a trilogy of anthology albums, containing demos, out-takes, live performances and "new songs."
4-0 out of 5 stars The Legend of the Beatles Continues!
There are many gems that highlight THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY 2. The interesting ones are the unreleased tracks such as THAT MEANS A LOT (a Phil Spector influenced love ballad), IF YOU'VE GOT TROUBLE, and 12-BAR ORIGINAL (a blues instrumental). Alternate takes such as GOT TO GET YOU INTO MY LIFE is totally different from the version released on REVOLVER. One of the most interesting tracks is the rousing AND YOUR BIRD CAN SING (also from REVOLVER)where the Beatles are laughing and giggling though the whole take (there are some hints they might have been on a "pot high" during the session). Overall, the CD's are a great companion piece to THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY documentaries. However, there is one downside to this CD. On disc one, track 12, the live version of HELP!. It is obvious that John Lennon has forgot some of the lyrics and mumbles the misplaced passages to get through the song. One would think with hours of tapes in the EMI vaults, the powers-that-be could have found something else to fill the void. It is as if the remaining Beatles wanted to somehow slightly break down the Lennon-myth/legend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So, why isn't Dick sharing?
If there exists a true stereo mix of this record, why aren't the people who wrote, performed, recorded and released it in possession of it? Why doesn't the Beach Boys camp or Brian Wilson's camp or Mark Linett have access to it?
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Vibrations DOES exist in stereo,Mark L.
Hi Mark, I really appreciate all you do for the remixes-but I have to tell you that Dick Bartley plays a stereo version of Good Vibrations on his National radio show, and I recorded his Beach Boys show last year and have it.It IS the 45 version,IN STEREO.Where did he get it from?(Of course he talks over the beginning and end,) but it IS stereo-the Cellos are in one channel. It is not "stereoized" with reverb or something. Also please tell Darian S.that I am still waiting for an email about the live Chickering sound...

2-0 out of 5 stars We gotta get out of this place-NOT ORIGINAL
Hello Animal fans.....
5-0 out of 5 stars The one to get...
With so many Animals compilations out there it's difficult to know what to go for but this is probably the one. Why?... well it includes the best tracks from their first iteration as one of the UK's finest R&B groups and their second as one of the most successful of the West Coast's psychedelic immigrants. All the hits are here, from their brilliantly raw first single "Baby Let Me Take You Home" through to their infectious celebration of San Francisco's summer of '67 "Monterey" festival, with each driven along by Eric Burdon's superb, searingly powerful blues-rock voice that converts even the ordinary into something special.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow...I can't believe there's only two reviews for this - this is GREAT 60's R&B/Psychedelic music!
The Animals are one of the lesser known R&B/psychedelic bands of the 60's, though most everyone knows their big hit "The House Of The Rising Sun". Even though not every song is as great here, they're all good. The worst part about this collection is the audio quality - it's all in mono and definitely needs a remastering. If you can look past this, however, it's still great stuff. Singer Eric Burdon wasn't one of the best singers in the world, but he was still pretty likable. He definitely matched the sort of R&B influenced psychedelic rock that they produced. The lyrics tend to be pretty interesting, but they aren't always so (see "Boom Boom" for an example). However, they're usually fun, memorable and catchy. The musicianship is pretty good, but the production is not - as I said before it needs a remastering. It certainly sounds unique - The Animals, I would argue, have their own sound. Even though The Animals aren't as great as other 60's bands like The Lovin' Spoonful or The Zombies, this collection is definitely still worth checking out. Basically, if you're a fan of psychedelic or R&B rock then you'll probably love this collection by a lesser-known classic 60's band. Highly recommended!

1-0 out of 5 stars Sleepy Trails
Damn nice cover art. After that it goes down hill.I guess you had to be there ? Long periods of absolutely nothing as in no sound! I actualy fell asleep the first time I listened to it ! Maybe if I got stoned before I listened to it , it would have been just like being in the audience in the old days .

"Happy Trails" is hands-down the best album Quicksilver ever recorded.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true 60's masterpiece
DAY OF FUTURE PAST is my second favorite Moody's album next to ON THE THRESHOLD OF A DREAM. Mainly, because they constantly play "Night's In White Satin" and "Tuesday Afternoon" on my radio stations that I'm burned out on those tunes. I still like those songs, but just don't want to hear them everyday. But to tell you the truth in terms of production and creativity, this gem is one of the top four or five albums in pop/rock history. Since I'm an avid listener of classical music, it's good hear the blending of pop/rock with the orchestra. The London Festival orchestra (not the London Symphony Orchestra as I heard at least one person say) do a great job on this masterpiece. I don't know if this was nominated for a grammy but if it wasn't it's a travesty. You won't be dissappointed with this first album by the classic lineup (I heard one of your previous reviewers b
