Editorial Review

In addition to raising public consciousness about the dangers of nuclear power, the 1979 series of star-studded anti-nuclear concerts at Madison Square Garden were a significant event both musically and historically. The shows were immortalized in a feature film and on this 2 CD set. Among those featured on the album are such '70s soft-rock icons as Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, Carly Simon, the Doobie Brothers, and Crosby, Stills and Nash, along with Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Ry Cooder, and Gil Scott-Heron for a token dose of grit. Inevitably, Springsteen's "Devil with the Blue Dress Medley" steals the show, but otherwise Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to rate it higher
I really liked this when it came ut on vinyl, but in retrospect, it was the cause, not the music. B. Raitt is grand, G Nash with an excellant Cathedral, J C Young, and the highlight to me We Almost Lost Detroit by the great Gil Scott-Heron. But the second disc is second rate. Edit the filler and it rates higher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming thoughts of childhood
As a child of the 70's who grew up in a very "no nukes" home this album was on the turn table every night. What a great find for me all these years later as I start my own family."Power" is one of the nicest, smoothest, most heartwarming songs every performed.
4-0 out of 5 stars fighting fission with fusion
I suppose just about anyone could find a reason to give a listen to the 'No Nukes' recordings. For many, some of the earliest and most blistering live tracks from Bruce Springsteen, still on his career ascent, which are offered here are reason enough to own these discs, even if he shares CD space with Chaka Khan.Others may find their appeal in the workmanlike presence of Graham Nash, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, and The Doobie Brothers, who perform solo and are all over the place singing duets and background for other performers willing to ante-up in the fight against fission.Despite my own appreciation for Crosby, Stills and Nash, what really caught my eye here was what amounts to a cameo appearance by Gil Scott-Heron, offering up one of his finest moments (and as a Detroiter one I can readily identify with) on the ominous yet funkified 'We Almost Lost Detroit'.Next to 'Johannasburg' this is my favorite Gil Scott-Heron composition.Unfortunately, it appears on a wonderful, but unreleased CD Scott-Heron produced in 1977 with Brian Jackson, 'Bridges'.It tells a slightly overblown tale about a malfunction at one of the two Fermi nuclear plants near Detroit. While the mishap could have theoretically progressed into a full-blown meltdown, the generator was quickly shut down and catastrophe was readily averted. So while it didn't come close to producing a Chernobyl, it did produce one funky protest song, and Scott-Heron gives it an inspired treatment on 'No Nukes'

Editorial Review

Critics may quibble over the creative roller coaster that's been Paul McCartney's post-Beatles solo career, but few can deny his status as one of rock's most buoyant live performers and consistent crowd pleasers. That drive to stake his claim onstage (said to be one of the factors that drove the Fabs to dissolution) energizes this otherwise largely backward-looking collection of performances from his 2002 world tour; fully two-thirds of the double-disc's 35 tracks hail from the Beatles catalog, with the rest slanted toward early solo-career standouts like "Jet," "Maybe I'm Amazed," and "My Love." But Mac and his focused backing quartet deliver them with a punchy edge and sense of abandon that's largely MIA on previous McCartney live releases. Other than pausing for tributes to his fallen comrades ("Here Today," a solo acoustic paean to John Lennon followed by a touching, ukulele-backed nod to George Harrison with "Something"), it's largely a rollicking career retrospective from a musician whose restless drive to perform invests this collection with something more than mere nostalgia. The singer who invoked Bach at 22 may still refuse to act his age, but here that's not a bad thing at all. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Awful Live Recording
The recording of this live music is one of the worst I've ever heard and rivals the quality on some bootlegs. The guitars are way up and overpower everything else, including Paul's voice. There's no transition between the songs - just wait 3 seconds and the next one starts.Amateurish is the best way to describe this effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely outstanding!!!
This is an incredible live album.Being only 22 years old, I clearly missed out on the heyday of the Beatles and most of Paul's solo career. However, I was lucky enough to finally have the one experience I've dreamed of ever since I first started listeing to my dad's Beatles records at the age of 3 or 4...seeing Paul McCartney, my favorite Beatle live in concert.I saw his 2005 show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and I was absolutely blown away. The ticket may have cost me $170, but the 3+ hour show made it worth every single cent. This CD is fairly similar to the set he played that night, which is why I have such a liking for it.Paul is an incredible amazing live persona. He busted out in obscure Beatle numbers that were absolutely incredible to see performed live.Never in my life would I have expected him to play songs like "I'll Get You" or "In Spite of All The Danger"...a track that I don't even believe the Beatles wrote, and you would have only heard if you own Anthology 1.Yes, I am speaking of a different tour, and songs that aren't included on this CD, but I guess what I'm getting at is that this album, as good as it is, can't even come close to doing justice to the amazing experience one gets from seeing this true legend of rock live.I fully recommend buying it if you haven't had the opportunity to see him play in person.Classics like "Let Me Roll It", "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Sgt. Pepper's", "Jet", and "Band on the Run" are just that more amazing when performed live. For a 63 year old man...he rocks like he was 23.You honestly could never guess his age from the show he puts on.The energy he gives off is uncanny.Truely, Paul McCartney may be the greatest living rock legend of this time, times past, and times to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great CD set from a legend!
Back in the USA contains a great set list of one of the most influential rock stars of the past 50 years.Paul McCartney and his band perform many of the Beatles songs to perfection. If you like the Beatles, you will enjoy this CD set immensely!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Magical Mystery Tour
The Star Club performance has bounced around in some form since the 1970s, initially as a double-album import on the Lingasong Records label. The sound quality was very rough, but the liner notes and photographs were outstanding and the gig featured the lineup with Ringo on drums.
4-0 out of 5 stars Someone release ALL the Beatles Live in Hamburg recordings on ONE COLLECTION---Please!
I bought "The Beatles Live!at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany; 1962" as a double vinyl album back in the late 1970s.It was on some label called Lingasong.Back then, I didn't even know that any such recordings existed, so I was thrilled.I absolutely loved it (raw, relaxed & loose, with the Beatles sounding more than a little looped, goofing and interacting with the crowd), though I later heard a lot of criticism about the sound quality.True, the recordings weren't professionally made---so what? That's all there is.Later on I discovered that "I Saw Her Standing There", "Ask Me Why", and "Twist And Shout" were also recorded at that time, when I found (and purchased) yet another vinyl packaging of the recordings.Looks like the only thing I'm missing so far is "Hully Gully", unless somebody's sitting on some more recordings somewhere out there in Pepperland.
4-0 out of 5 stars Correction
Please do not be misled by previous reviews. These recordings were made in December, 1962. Pete Best was let go in August, 1962, and Stuart Sutcliffe died in April of '62. The Beatles at these recordings were John, Paul, George and Ringo. If anyone wants to hear Pete's drumming, I suggest the Decca Sessions, which are now widely available. ... Read more

Playing Rock's Greatest Chameleon was a great gig while it lasted, but by the mid-80's, David Bowie found his "Changes" led to an ironic dead-end. Yet this 1974 live album managed to distill his quicksilver nature as few others. Ostensibly mounted in support of Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Love it....
I didnt think Bowie could outdo the studio versions of Sweet Thing (it actually smells like a street)and Cracked Actor...but he actually has here. Incredible live recording....And the live version of Aladdin Sane is just stupendous...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Record
Sure. The original release of this record wasn't the best it could have been but that was primarily because of technical reasons. Even the original liner notes acknowledge that there were overdubs.
3-0 out of 5 stars A must only for hardcore fans
The critics have always been hard on this album, and no one more so than David Bowie himself."That album!I've never played it! ... it must sound like a vampire's teeth coming down on you.And that picture on the cover ... like I've just stepped out of the grave... that's actually how I felt at the time."

Editorial Review

You want guitar precision, listen to Jim Hall. You want perfect pitch, listen to Ella Fitzgerald. You want raw, electrifying, frightful, unruly, mesmerizing, aggressive, urgent, and occasionally brilliant gutbuckets of sound, listen to Jimi Hendrix's Monday morning Woodstock finale. Most of the masses had gone home, Jimi was nervous, his band unrehearsed, and the sound was as muddy as the grounds, but so what?In August of 1969, Hendrix's band, which he dubbed Gypsy Sun and Rainbows for this performance, was in a period of transition between the heavy psychedelic bluesy Experience and the more soulful, rhythmically dynamic Band of Gypsys. The two percussionists and a rhythm guitarist who augment Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and Gypsy bassist Billy Cox are either mixed out by the engineer or drowned out by Hendrix's ferocious attack. Throughout the intense performance, finally restored here in sequential order and (almost, save for two Larry Lee vocals) in its entirety, Hendrix seems to touch on every musical style--from jazz to blues to funk to soul to metal, and even a few (fusion, punk) that weren't christened yet. There are crisper Hendrix shows out there, but none more explosive or more historic. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get the DVD instead?
Now that a double dvd of Jimi's Woodstock gig has been released, remixed by Eddie Kramer (including a 5.1 surround mix), there's not much need for this CD, especially since the dvd set is cheaper. Just beware that the older single dvd release bears the same title as the new one; "Live At Woodstock".

5-0 out of 5 stars one word - WOW
As I am listening to Jimi Hendrix from any of his cd's I am always amazed in some way. His guitar skills are awesome and really nobody will ever be like him again. Over 50 percent of this cd is a guitar solo which really is all chopped up and spread throughout all the songs. "Star Spangled Banner" track is a perfect example of his guitar skills. "Jam Back at the House" is also very cool because of how he changes every minute and goes into a complete different solo. Also, the songs are much longer. The regular album songs that are only 3-5 minutes on his other cd range from 5-13 minutes on this 2-disc set. "Voodoo Child" is over 13 minutes long and its played faster then the album version. Overall all the songs are great and this would be a awesome set to add to your Hendrix collection.
4-0 out of 5 stars Woodstock The Summer Of Love With Jimi Hendrix!
Live at Woodstock was great for Jimi Hendrix, but as far as his Gypsy Sun & Rainbows Band including Juma Sultan on percussion, Larry Lee on rhythm guitar, and Jerry Velez on percussion they where way out of key as far as sound wise. Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox, and Jimi Hendrix played great together that very last day of Woodstock. This is truely a great performence including the entire set unlike the video Woodstock. Their are endless jams on this one including Message To Love running seven minutes and twenty one seconds wow! Hear My Train A Comin running 9:49, Spanish Castle Magic 7:05, and Jam Back At The House running 7:44 wow a great jam band.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd Been There!
This is my favorite live album of all time; bought it in early 1970, shortly after it came out.I'm so glad the CD version is available now, because I've absolutely worn the vinyl out!As someone else mentioned, it is a little short, but the energy is fabulous. The versions of It's For You, Nobody, One, "Eli's-a-Comin" , and Try a Little Tenderness are, IMO, much, much better than the studio cuts. Both vocals and instrumentals seem to be a lot more together in this live album.Unbelievable that it was done in '69, seems like only yesterday!

4-0 out of 5 stars In the true spirit of 'retro'
I remember when this album (not CD) was popular. This was always close to the top of our play list. For nostalgia, I recently purchased this CD...and at first I couldn't remember why we liked it so much. But after a couple of spins through the CD player, I realized that this is an excellent capture of the Three Dog Night sound.Well mixed, excellent musicians, and a great selection of music. It would have been really nice if they could have included some bonus tracks on the CD not originally on the album. This one really 'Socks it to it'!

5-0 out of 5 stars Jimjn
Easily one of the best live performances ever captured on record, tape or CD! This is a great album! The music and the vocals are tremendous. The energy and feel comes through and you can tell the band and the audience are having a great time. The only knock for me is that it's to short. I wish these guys would dig out the rest of the tapes, re-master the tunes and add extra songs. There has to be more to this show somewhere. When you hear it I think you will feel the same way. There are so many reissue and re-mastered CDs with extra songs these days that could have been left alone. This is one that should be enhanced. It truly deserves it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Frampton's finest moment 30 years on
Peter Frampton's Frampton Comes Alive was released in January of 1976.
3-0 out of 5 stars I just don't get it!
While this is a fairly good record, I just don't get why it receives all of the praise it gets."The Allman Brothers Live At The Fillmore East", "One More From the Road" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and "The Who Live at Leeds" are three of the live records that are better.Even the live Humble Pie record that Frampton was on leaves this in the dust.I've had this recording in some form (LP, CD) since it was released and it seldom finds it's way to my play list.As I said earlier this is a fairly good record but the best live record ever, PLEASE!

4-0 out of 5 stars Show Me the Way, One More Time
There's nothing new to say about an album this familiar, popular, and previously-analyzed. This was a landmark release of the 70's; its hits remain staples of the classic rock format, and probably always will. So let's skip right to what makes the Deluxe Edition worth buying.

3-0 out of 5 stars I prefer the studio versions
Not bad at all - but the studio versions are perfection.I don't think I will be listening to this much.

5-0 out of 5 stars a band amidst greatness
I agree with many others that this is Roxy Music at their prime. I thought I'd share a couple thoughts about why. Aside from the band itself being in top form, the energy of that time came into play. Phil Manzanera was also in a band called 801 Live with Brian Eno, which kept his guitar on fire, and the bass player for the tour was John Wetton, recently of King Crimson! So that powerful bass/guitar jam in "Red" by King Crimson seems to be flowing through this tour as well. Fascinating dynamic!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Live Album Ever Made...
Between 1971 and 1976, Roxy Music were in their "hip" phase and they were one of the best live acts ever, and still are today

The Who wrapped up their 2000 World Tour--possibly their final wave of the Union Jack hankie now that John Entwhistle has died--with this red-carpet Teenage Cancer Trust charity shindig at the Royal Albert Hall. Time has taken its toll on some of the Who's more splenetic sensibilities; there are times when Roger Daltrey sounds too seasoned and contented to muster much in the way of vocal vitriol. But the old grumblers can still sound enthusiastically cross. While few live albums rival Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good for Senior Citizens
Don't get me wrong. This is no "Live at Leeds". This is no "Isle of Wight". But believe me, this is still better than most live albums. John Entwistle is at his peak in the peformance of "5:15". Pete's playing sounds great throughout the album. Although Roger Daltrey's vocals are definitely not what they used to be, they still aren't unbearable. Zak Starkey is the best drummer that could've followed Keith Moon.Exiciting guest peformances from Noel Gallagher, Eddie Vedder and more.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Performance at a Great Price
Good song mix, although mostly predicatable. Sound is good and performances passioned. 2 1/2 discs for under $10 makes this a no-brianer. Last gigs with John E. on Bass makes it a nice historical gem. Who are YOU?

3-0 out of 5 stars works as an addition to your Joe Walsh collection
I rated this record three stars because it's not Walsh at his best and it's too short, but I found the sound quality to be fine and it's a logical item to round out one's Joe Walsh collection.Any real fan will look at the track listing and already be well-versed in the six songs captured live, they're nothing new.
2-0 out of 5 stars Zzzzzzzzzz Zzzzzzzzzz Zzzzzzzzzz !!
First off,an off night for the band.I have heard recordings of Barnstorm and Walsh on earlier tours and they SMOKED! Clearly too much booze, blow and blondes took their toll on Joe W.by the time this was recorded.Also...WHERE IS THE LES PAUL TONE?? Walsh had the best Les Paul guitar tone and here he is using a flaccid sounding Strat or Tele along with Don Felders Stratocaster...BORING!!!! Insult to injury? 35 minutes of show time and we're outta here! C'mon guys.Iknow you could have done better!

Totally outstanding and thoroughly entertaining live album, especially while driving.Crank the opening tune and get ready to party!Totally captures the mid 1970's stuff us white kids were listening to at the time.I couldn't love this album more.It takes me right back to 1976, the year I graduated from high-school.Dazed and Confused all the way baby.

5-0 out of 5 stars HOTTEST LIVE SET EVER
I used to worship this album in the early 1980's, and it has stood the test of time. These timeless classics are delivered with a tightness and boogie funk style not heard since. Even the Chili Peppers would have a hard time keeping up with the pace put on by Travers, Tommy Aldridge (one the greatest rock drummers ever), Pat Thrall (with his trademark guitar licks) and Mars Cowling (the most underrated bassist in Rock's history). This is a 'front to backer' so just start it up and let it go. The pace sets as a bruising rock and funk marathon, increasing in intensity up until the very last notes of the record. It's too bad more artists don't listen to this disc before going out on stage. "GO FOR WHAT YOU KNOW" is something all musicians should know.
5-0 out of 5 stars HELLO MUSIC LOVERS
There is always much debate about the best live album ever. This is not, but it is damn close.I wore the vinyl grooves flatout upon it's initial release.
5-0 out of 5 stars the BEST live album of the 70's....bar none.
my friends and fellow rockers, if you do not own this release, whether it be cd, cassette or vinyl, i don't care, then you are missing a piece of rock and roll history. a piece that, unfortunately, most people don't even know exists. forget Frampton Comes Alive, Kiss Alive II, Foghat Live, Exit Stage Left and others, this is the gem masterpiece of the 1970's, bar none. if you are a musician, and you are unaware of this jewell, then you better buy it now right here on Amazon to see what playin' tight is all about. if your just a rocker and dig good live rock and roll then do the same as well. either way, you will literally be blown away by this cd. first off, most folks talk of the guitar mastery by Travers and Thrall, which is undeniable, but the real treat is in the rythym section. Mars Cowling delivers a bass performance that has a place of it's own in the live rock performances hall of fame (if there were such a thing). the drumming? well, that is done by the one and only Tommy Aldridge, and must be heard to really appreciate. listen people, just buy, borrow it, do what ya have to to get it, but just spin it and see what were all talikin' about. can all us rockers be wrong? peace. ... Editorial Review

If Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band were a playground basketball team they'd be the one made up of local legends that don't have as much spring in their legs as the young bucks, but get by on guts and guile. Culled from the two Madison Square Garden shows that closed out the revived E Street Band's 1999-2000 road show, this 20-song collection deftly entwines fan favorites with fresher material, including two new offerings, the stately "Land of Hope and Dreams" and the solemn "American Skin"--the latter prompted by the shooting of unarmed New Yorker Amadou Diallo by police officers. When Springsteen and company (including both Miami Steve Van Zandt and his successor, Nils Lofgren, on guitar) look back, they temper the force of the original arrangements with ingenuity and a sense of spacing. The E Street Band in their heyday may have served up four-hour marathons, but they felt stopwatch-tight. Here Springsteen reconciles his rocker and reflective sides as "The River" curves along through a serpentine course, "Mansion on the Hill" is given a curious (albeit lovely) Hawaiian treatment, and "Born in the U.S.A." resurfaces as a deep-blues lament. The gang can still muster a take-no-prisoners attack, as witnessed by the hard-charging likes of "Two Hearts" and "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Springsteen Gets Back Together With The E Street Band, With Electrifying Results
LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY is a live album taken from Bruce Springsteen's reunion tour with the E Street band, and the results are electrifying. This album beats the great PLUGGED by a country mile, and has the feel of a religious service, with Springsteen testifying and hollering like there's no tomorrow. The studio reunion album, THE RISING, was just as good, and proved that the reunion was not just a temporary thing. Springsteen's belief that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since the spring of 2005 on drug-smuggling charges was unjustly convicted makes this CD/cassette an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5-0 out of 5 stars 10th Avenue Freeze-Out!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have to confess: this version of 10th Ave. Freeze-Out brought tears to my eyes. And for one simple reason. I never saw a concert of The Boss and his E-Street Band. They never came to Brazil to play. "Oh, they are too americans" people say here. Oh, what a shame. Music is an universal language and, listening to Bruce's live albums (I have all the four) and watching his dance with The Big Man Clarence Clemmons, the raising of hands of all the little preeties from coastline to the city, I was really able to understand the meaning of lots of things like companionship, musicianship, harmony, communion. Well, I wish I was a Jersey native to walk down the 10th Ave just to see Scooter and Big Man singing and dancing in the streets. Rock and roll are made of these moments.

3-0 out of 5 stars Redundant Maybe, but Why Complain?
I will start this review with the only complaint that can I can muster when discussing any live recording of Bruce and the E Street band. After the monumental perfection of the Live 1975-85 collection, much of this is extraneous or redundant. Springsteen is as focused and energized as always and the E Street Band plays with the same fervor that has established their reputations as an unbeatable live act. Because some of these songs have grown so familiar, though, the moody intensity of their studio counterparts is compromised, particularly on the most reflective tunes. "Prove It All Night" is all bombast, as is "Two Hearts," but they lean heavily on familiarity, while the latter suffers from a contrived ending that incorporates Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "It Takes Two." The energy is monumental, though, which helps to make the mellower songs that much more effective. "Mansion on the Hill" works beautifully, with gentle waves of pedal-steel guitar wafting behind the melody like a soft breeze over a field of wheat. "The River" suffers, though, because it is too drawn out and loses its central vision as a portrayal of lost innocence, sounding instead like the dim reflections of a middle-aged man. Springsteen is an honest performer, so I'm certain this is not an oversight. It's only that the aging process forces things to be re-assessed, and not everything works in this revised context. "Youngstown" is another misfire, with a ton of musical muscle to propel it, but without the vulnerable poignancy that made the original work so well. "Murder Inc." and "Badlands" are two songs that demand a tough, hard-as-nails energy, and they both get the treatment they deserve here.

4-0 out of 5 stars an outstanding showcase
If you are not a fan of Stephen Stills individually, this recording will not convert you.If you are, however, this compilation of electric and solo acoustic performances
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Set From Stills
this is a nice collection of Stills playing live, a no-frills CD-packaging of the popular 70's album.the first half (Side 1) is electric, the second (side 2) is accoustic.Give SS kudos for an interesting set list, this isn't just a re-hash of hits.Well worth having.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Amazing Acoustic Guitar Work I Have Ever Heard
I have been an SS fan since my old man turned me on to him,(late 80's). You cannot touch the guitar work on Crossroads/You Can't Catch Me. This is SS at his non-electrical best. No wonder he and Hendrix were collaborators/friends. This album is worth the price for this song only. Buy it and if you don't think so, send me nasty e-mails.

I did enjoy this CD. Listening to him live was a real treat...particularly since it is fairly recent and not something from the 70's. ... Read more
