5-0 out of 5 stars HEY, SAILOR!
My first experience of Halfnelson, later Sparks, came courtesy of one of those "Various Artists" promotional albums. The track that was selected to represent the band was, of course, the least representative track from this, their debut album.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is not Alice at his best
It's on OK album for someone who is not Alice Cooper. It has some good tunes and some not so good tunes. But if you want a change of music style then it's alright to listen to once in a while.Flush the Fashion was better then this similiar album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing plastic punk.
My first concert was the Special Forces tour. It blew me away. This was his take on punk, and I liked it! Much better than his sluggish solo albums from the 70's. He was trying to reclaim his place in proto-punk history. He weighed about 98 pounds and ruled. "7&7 Is" sealed the deal. He was trying to present prepunk to the latter day punks. A great album, and the soundtrack to my childhood. It fit great with my Germs, Kommunity Fk, and TSOL records. Buy it worms!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Special Forces is a special force to be appreciated!
Common factors for music I like is: tight controlled, raw, bold and, above all, free of cliches.

4-0 out of 5 stars Swing With Marc
This is a great example of crunchy glam, with understated horns & production.A good place to start for novices.Snappy guitars and sing-along choruses. It bears mentioning that the superb background vocals are by none other than Flo & Eddie (Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman - the singers from the sixties band The Turtles, and early '70's Mothers of Invention).Backing vocals are worth the price of admission.

4-0 out of 5 stars T. Rex - 'The Slider' (Repertoire)
Originally released in 1972,looks to be the band's seventh lp.I've seen this disc in almost every retail store I've ever been. Two big hits came off this record,"Metal Guru" and the pop gem "Telegram Sam".Other notable cuts I thought were "Rock On",the memorable "Baby Strange" and "Rabbit Fighter".This CD reissue tags on three bonus tracks.Good British glam rock classsic, but also just fun to listen to.A should-have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great compilation with a few minor flaws
As this compilation clearly proves, Queen's most well known songs may have been their pop singles but this band could really ROCK.Tracks like "We Will Rock You", "Tie Your Mother Down", "I Want It All", and "Hammer To Fall" are among my personal favorites and they are all here (and in full album versions or as hybrid single/album versions like with "I Want It All").Some other lesser known gems on this compilation include "Stone Cold Crazy", "Sheer Heart Attack", "It's Late", and the "Rocks Retake" of "I Can't Live With You" (far superior to the version on the "Innuendo" album).
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Collection
This is very Definitely a great selection of QUEEN'S heavier side. However, it is not a "stripped down" version of Queen's audiowork. We Will rock, Hammer to Fall, and etc., are all layered guitar works. The Brilliance of QUEEN lay in this over the top working of just about anything they did. In thisrespect they were worlds ahead of their time. The multiple guitars come into their own in the world of multi channelrecordings. The real kickerabout what Brian Did, is that he couldachieve a semblance of the multi-layersound in live concerts with an effect thatallowed him to play over lines he did ( as in the solo in WE WILL ROCK YOU on dvd, WEMBLEY, and one other concert).
4-0 out of 5 stars Good collection of Queen's heavy rock songs
Queen, like a lot of 1970s rock bands like Styx, Boston, and Cheap Trick had plenty of tools in their audience-pleasing arsenal. While they could pop out radio hits with the best of them, Queen also recorded some of the tastiest metallic rock ever to leave England's shores. This anthology rounds up some of the best of them, including gems like "It's Late," "I'm in Love With My Car," and "Tie Your Mother Down." Of more interest to diehard Queen fans is the post-Freddie song and the re-recording of "I Can't Live With You." Those of you who read the liner notes will also realise that Freddie Mercury (as essential as he was) wasn't Queen's only songwriter - many of these heavy wonders were created by Brian May and Roger Taylor.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of Queen's compilation albums
The original Queen Greatest hits album , first released in 1981 , this was the album that first got me hooked on Queen when I was 12.
5-0 out of 5 stars Does not include any song that is less than superb!
Queen rocked to stardom in the 1970s, with Freddie Mercury's (1946-91) silky voice leading. They produced many excellent songs, and were popular worldwide, right up until Freddie Mercury's death from AIDS in 1991. Throughout my youth, I loved Queen's sound, and their many wonderful songs - and now I have them again!
5-0 out of 5 stars Mine is one from 1981
Darn when cd's first came out what you where looking for was hard to find. And Queen was at the top of my list to get something into my budding cd collection. I finally found this at our local record store as the vinyl was slowly circling its drain due to cd's. And yes the first Queen I saw on the shevles was this import. Darn glad I got it that day even though I considered the price steep due to it being an import it still took the cd industry some years to get all of the choices you have now days I do not need another queen this on did me fine though its play list is different from what they have here tracks 1 - 6 are the same the rest go like this

5-0 out of 5 stars Underrated
Yes this album is not a best of. It's just a cheap re-release of their 1984 album 'Music You Can Dance To'. Anyway. The Music. I think this is one of Sparks best albums, even though Sparks fans tend to overlook it. 'Change' for one is just an amazing song. 'The Scene' has got a great keyboard hook, something like the Mortal Combat theme, then their is the Citzen Kane inspired 'Rosebud', which is one of the catchiest on the albums. Like most albums, their is a weak song. On this album, it's 'Fingertips' it's just bland, nothing at all special.

5-0 out of 5 stars it really is music that you can dance to
I was first introduced to this band back in 85, and they just didn't do it for me. About a year or so later, I was in a club in college and fell in love with the song 'Music that you can dance to' and have since grown to appreciate the band.
5-0 out of 5 stars FOR "#1 IN HEAVEN" FANS!!!
Yes...Sparks have had their share of negative criticism ever since 1979's "No. 1 Song in Heaven," but somewhere in there was a wave of new fans built on stylish dance beats and classic Mael humour! "No. 1. Song in Heaven" was not an ending of the band, but a vision of things to come. Read more

Editorial Review

Progressive rock savants Roxy Music reinvented themselves as the avatars of caviar dreams and champagne wishes on this smooth-as-$1,000-cognac 1982 disc. By this point in their jagged discography, Roxy had become little more than Bowie-esque lead singer Bryan Ferry's backup band, with his regal tone ensconced somewhere between the synth-fetish of Ultravox and a friskier Scott Walker. Seemingly gone were the band's herky-jerky days as a democratically run outfit--Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect record, but get the remastered version!
Like the cover to this CD, there is a misty, brooding quality to "Avalon." Like a walk along a dewy beach at the prelight of dawn, everything is serene and melancholy at the same time. So much so, that this is Roxy's perfect moment. There is more pent up sensuality here than in dozens of over belting soul singers, and without upping the vocal gale quotient. In that sense, "Avalon" is quintessentially British. Romantic overtures and silky smooth desire combine in "More Than This," opening the disc and setting the mood. By the time Bryan Ferry is crooning "I'll soon be home" at the end of "True To Life," you wish that you were on this journey with him.5-0 out of 5 stars Perfection
I'm right there with the fan from Ohio, this is an album that you just feel right down into your bones. How many times can you say that you hear an album that never really starts or finishes, just flows from one song into the next in complete harmony?Avalon is that album -- it tells a story from the first song to the last, and it definitely takes you on a journey with it.Every time I listen to it, I just don't want to say goodbye to it, I don't want it to leave, which is just what the last song, Tara, is doing in such a poignant way. Think of Kate Bush's Hounds of Love, U2's The Joshua Tree, Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy, albums that from beginning to end pull you in, and put Avalon in there with it. Definitely a must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars In a class of it's own......
The first time I listened to this cassette, (yes, cassette - that's how long ago I purchased it) Ithought it was a little on the mellow side. Then I REALLY listened to it. It is by far the most beautiful, classy andromantic pieces of music I have ever listened to. If this is "chickmusic" that's fine with me, every chick in the world should own thisCD. It doesn't get much better than this. ... Read more

Alice ... you are a smart Christian, you tell it how you see it and you see it correct, now all you have to do is stop hanging around with that bum Rob Zombie.Anyways, onto the album ... its great, not so melodical and not as great as The Last Temptation but still awesome, its heavy, deep and the lyrics leave a lasting impression. Also I would like to add how great his latest album Dirty Diamonds is, it varies in song styles with great production and catchy tunes geniously written.

Along with New Values, Kill City is some of his best stuff. Too bad you can't get the CD in the green vinyl color! I know a lot of people think his Stooges days where best. I lived through those recordings when they came out, and never cared for any of it. Kill City is patchy at times, but it works in it's favore! The music is great, and emotion behind the lyrics is genuine. When I listen to this, I feel transported to a dank motel room with flashing neon outside the window. Without question, Bryan Ferry is one of the most sublime singers of the past 30 years. And if you subtract the work with Roxy, he rates as one of the all time best interpretive artists, ever. Which is what makes a collection like "Slave to Love" frustrating. While it certainly spotlight's Ferry's extraordinary skill as a romantic singer, it jumbles and juxtaposes styles from the various stages of Ferry's career. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars More essential than you might think....
`Beeb' is a British affectation for the BBC, the state-run media which plans (or planned) all television and radio for Great Britain. Bowie was around when the BBC was implementing its 4-station radio broadcasting, and he became one of the first guests in early 1968. BBC rules were strange and archaic by American standards, insisting that pre-recorded music represent only a fraction of airtime, the point being that this would provide employment for professional musicians. So it was that David Bowie appeared with a crew of musicians to perform his songs live a number of times over a four-year period.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best of early bowie in one inspiring collections
David Bowie is indisputibally on of the most talented artists in music ever. His songwriting is always at a peak, and was always excellent in his early days, and that is proved on this fantastic collection from the BBC. All live, but you wouldn't know it because it's sounds as clear as his studio recordings. And how about those lyrics? Bowie is so inventive, and he's never gotten the due he's deserved. Look at the amount of work he's accomplished, and look how good he can still be; even better than most. He's amazing. One listen to this collection and you'll realize he's amazing too, i hope. If you're still in doubt listen to all of ziggy stardust, but trust me you'll love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars CHANGESBEEBOWIE
CD2 - The first CD could be a symphony of (flatus) and I'd still give this 5 stars for the nearly immaculate performances on the second disk. In particular, "Hang Onto Yourself" (track 3), "White Light/White Heat," and "Suffregette City" (featuring Mick Ronson making this totally hot kissing noise with his guitar)crackle with energy. It is truly a thrill to hear these old favorites in such a new (as such) and exciting light. Bowie and Co. burn down the BBC studios. Repeatedly. Any rock fan (but especially an old Bowie fan, of course) is likely to meltdown in ecstacy upon hearing this.

In 1985, "We Are the World" sold 4 million singles and 3 million albums with an inclusiveness that allowed Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Kenny Rogers, and Cyndi Lauper to share space on the same charity anthem. Another African crisis 16 years later--the spread of AIDS across the continent--and the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks prompt this well-meaning remake of Marvin Gaye's 1971 Vietnam-era protest. Rather than the pop unity of the earlier record, however, this 48-minute EP breaks down into nine separate mixes and mix-and-match rosters aimed at different radio and club formats. After all, global village or not, Bono, Nelly, Jennifer Lopez, Scott Weiland, and Moby couldn't possibly coexist for four minutes, right? (Hearing Michael Stipe ride Jermaine Dupri's pop/hip-hop track for even a line raises intriguing possibilities for the R.E.M. singer.) The record's handful of lyric substitutions are clumsy, with "Picket lines won't block our way" forcing the listener to ponder just who's protesting in Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars God almighty - what IS going on???
OK, bare with me people - this one's going to be tough. I mean, one look at the names on this charity EP are enough to give any normal person nightmares; Nelly, J-Lo, Moby, Fred Durst.. it's like one giant super-suck attack. And that's just what they do to this timeless classic - attack it, rip out its heart and leave a ghastly, noisy pointless mess.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cover
I really enjoyed this album because there was so manny diffrent artist in here. They are trying to deliver a positive message. Even though Britney is in this album (I cant stand her), it is still very good to listen to.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Late Career Album
It is unusual for any artist in any medium to still be producing relevent, exciting work 30 years into a career. That Sparks released one of their career best albums at this time in their career stands as a testement to the talent of the Mael brothers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Funny, brilliant, remarkable
What makes this record such a wow-er is that it is, at bottom, a pop record. By that I mean it's mostly euphonic and euphoric--it sounds good and it's designed to make you feel good. And while making a solid pop album is no easy feat, doing it with the tropes of classical music should be impossible. Almost uniformly (the only exception being "My baby's taking me home", which would seem more at home on a Moby record), the songs, mostly built with synths, feel marvelously authentic. It's amazing technology has come this far!
5-0 out of 5 stars What it isn't. What it isn't. What it isn't. What it isn't
Everybody talks about what an amazing record LIL' BEETHOVEN is, and tries to describe what makes it so impressive, and why it sounds like nothing else Sparks have ever done (or anybody, for that matter) while at the same time saying why it sounds like everything the band has ever done. But nobody clarifies exactly what this record isn't.
