5-0 out of 5 stars amazing
This is absolutley a great investment. For those of you who hate the remixes this is not on it. Also in it is a book with lyrics and the famous poster of women on bikes miniaturized. An absolute must for the die hard Queen fan. Makes a great gift. I have been playing each c.d. on my radio show at 4am Eastern time. whrwfm.org

5-0 out of 5 stars Unabridged, Unmixed, Untouched and Unspoiled
I just purchased this set to boost my collection of Queen albums and have been a fan since they emerged in the early 70's. OK, so this is NOT a reflection of this multi talented band in entirety, and they certainly produced a lot of good albums after "The Game" (last album chronologically in this set)so a 25 year box set is missing quite a bit. That said, this set does contain some of their best work. From the deep rock seasoning of "the Prophets Song" and "Tie your Mother Down" to the choral flow of Brian May's "39", the rasping brood of Roger Taylors "In Love with my Car" and even the campy eloquence of "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" (plus many many more) one thing becomes quickly clear. Queen as a band never stood still, with a broadness of range and evolving style, this multi talented quartet were at the top of their game, and the forefront of Rock music for the last thirty years, and have doubtless inspired, and spawned many famous names since.
5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive Collection FromADefinitive RockBand...
The albums speak for themselves. But what really makes this one of the best box sets on the market is the sound quality, superbly remastered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sparks
This CD brought Sparks into my life. All their best songs together with great sound.

2-0 out of 5 stars yeah, right
A Sparks best-of would have to include at least 80 percent of the songs on the first five albums, "gone with the wind" (b-side), "my other voice" and probably the rest of No 1 in Heaven, maybe a couple of the catchy 80s tracks to show they could do the cars or the go gos almost as well as the real thing, 1 or two songs each from Gratuitous Sax, Plagiarism, and Balls ("The Angels," "More Than a Sex Machine"), and maybe half of Lil B.This collection misrepresents their melodic genius and makes them sound like a cute if rather cliche new wave pop band with unsubtly goofy lyrics. They were the best band on earth at times, and deserve better. Sorry kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tuneful and intelligent pop
Sparks first hit the limelight in about 1974 with the quirky This Town Ain't Big Enough, a powerful hook-filled pop song with dynamic falsetto vocals. It was a UK Top 20 hit but didn't do much elsewhere. Other seventies successes included Amateur Hour, Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth and Something For The Girl With Everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bowie Comp Done Right
Any single-disc compilation of David Bowie's best songs seems doomed to fail. His career is so long and varied that something is bound to be left out or un(der)represented.1990's Changesbowie did a good job of covering the hits from "Space Oddity" to "Blue Jean", and 2002's Best of Bowie added "Under Pressure" and tacked on a few non-essential items to bring it up to date (1997, in that case). Both of these collections made for entertaining listens, but incomplete pictures. Bowie the pop star, in both cases, was emphasized over Bowie the artist.
5-0 out of 5 stars SUPERB SELECTION OF SONGS
This excellent compilation draws from the albums The Man Who Sold The World, Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, Pin-Ups, Aladdinsane, Diamond Dogs and his opus magnum Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars. It thus provides some of his best work with producer Tony Visconti plus a wide variety of different musical styles. There's the wistful pop of Space Oddity and Starman, the pre-punk aggro of Jean Genie (supposedly written about Iggy Pop), the anthemic rock of Rebel Rebel, the 60s pop of Sorrow and Oh You Pretty Things (This was a hit for Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits in 1971). There's also the heavy rock of Man Who Sold The World (a hit for Lulu in the late 1960s) and All The Young Dudes (a hit for Mott The Hoople in 1973), the bleak ballad Drive-In Saturday, his fast and aloof interpretation of Let's Spend The Night Together and the phenomenal and breathtaking Life On Mars with its gripping arrangement and poetic lyrics. Other favorites of mine include the catchy Prettiest Star and Changes with its interesting wordplay, plus the magnificent Diamond Dogs with its howling hound sounds. The choice of tracks is highly intelligent and although these things are always subjective, I do for once agree with the selection of the compilers. Of course, Bowie had a novelty hit in 1973, The Laughing Gnome, but it would have been out of place on this album so I won't complain of the omission, and it was recorded long before 1969. Bowie's early work has stood the test of time very well. These are all strong, melodic songs that still evoke vivid images and emotions. This album well and truly deserves its five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars great history
This greatest hits collection from david bowie stands is a great collection of his early material such as ziggy stardust and velvet goldmine. It really is quite amazing to see how much David Bowie has done in his career. This CD really gives you a picture of what his earliest years were like. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Has some good glam rock songs, but overall just "ok"
Sweet is best known for "Ballroom Blitz" from the Wayne's World soundtrack and lesser known for their single "Little Willy". This album pretty much contains two great glam rock songs, "Ballroom Blitz" and "Fox On The Run", with the rest being either "ok" or filler. I'll admit that they do a good job making catchy, yet dumb and pointless, songs like "The 6-Teens" and "No You Don't", however it's catchy in a Backstreet Boys kind of way (i.e. forgettable). It sounds pretty dated and thus not really recommended.
5-0 out of 5 stars As good as I remember
This CD took 28 years off my age.I became 18 again. This CD is really as good as I remember, and now I know why Sweet was one of my favorite bands back in the 70's.Great drum work, heavy bass and those unique vocal harmonies make Sweet a classic 70's hard rock band.Get this CD instead of other Sweet compliations. The original songs are much better than any of the alternate versions available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Album!!!
This cd (American version) is actually a combination of the original Desolation Boulevard and Sweet Fanny Adams, both of which I own. This cd takes the best songs from both and is rock solid! This band started out writing cute little pop songs with writers Chinn and Chapman, but by the mid 70's they were on their own writing kick ass rock! Andy Scott's playing is very underrated. I love the unique "Sweet" vocal harmonies with Brian Connolly and the rest of the band. The Sweet were a very creative and original band that should have gotten more respect. Every song on here is good. Get it while you can!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Queen of Rock
I must admit to having a poster of Suzi upon my bedroom wall when I was in my teens. I thought she was just it! This double CD features all the hits and some outstanding covers. I just love her versions of Heartbreak Hotel, All Shook Up & Trouble (she is a huge Elvis fan). For the Suzi Quatro fan who wants to replace their old L.P.s with CDs but can't afford or find all the albums this is the Essential Suzi Quatro.

1-0 out of 5 stars An unfortunate influence
In Australia, where harsh environmental conditions preclude the development of the hyperfeminine singer/songwriter (even of less expressive confessional folkies), there has for a great many years been an unfortunate market for pseudo-macho women rockers. For this, this set of songs is undoubtedly to blame.5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely outstanding
As a Suzi Quatro fan from the mid-70s, I was absolutely astounded to discover this virtual treasure from the woman who started it all in rock and roll. While others may have come first, Suzi was the first total female rock and roll package, and this album proves it, from the raucus "Can the Can," to the beautiful"Honky Tonk Downstairs." It has hard rock, and mellow melodies. Like the title implies, this is an absolute essential for any Suzi Quatro fan. The best money I've spent in quite some time. My life is definitely better because of this compilation. Buy it. Enjoy it. Rock on, Suzi. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Given the multimedia frenzy that accompanied Princess Diana's untimely death, it's somehow appropriate that the tragedy should inspire this album--a 2 CD set featuring 36 old and new tracks by an array of international stars--with a portion of the proceeds going to a Memorial Fund established in the late Princess' name. But, with Diana's death as the only unifying thread (and a tenuous one at that), it's not a particularly consistent or cohesive listen. But it's hard to argue with such an impressive array of stars including Celine Dion, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, the Spice Girls, Barbra Streisand, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Puff Daddy, Aretha Franklin, R.E.M., Sinead O'Connor, Seal, George Michael, Des'ree, Bryan Ferry, and Michael Bolton (joining opera star Placido Domingo to perform "Ave Maria"). 5-0 out of 5 stars GREATEST HITS 1970 - 1990
DIGITALLY REMASTERED, PRINTED LYRICS, COMPLETE VERSIONS, ONE "NEW" SONG: "YOU GOTTA LOVE SOMEONE", HERE ARE ALL OF THE MOST POPULAR HITS OF ELTON JOHN IN THAT PERIOD, IT'S LIKE GREATEST HITS VOLS. I & II, PLUS SOME MORE, THIS WITH GREATEST HITS VOL.III WILL BE JUST FINE, ALL THE BEST FROM THE FIRST 20 YEARS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Astounding! So Much Good Elton John!
Too bad this album is an import, I got it at a regular music store for half of what it is being sold for here.Aside from that, I think if you like Elton John but don't want to wade through all of his material to find his most memorable songs and biggest hits, look no further, X marks the spot, you have found the treasure.Shop around first to see if you can get it for cheaper. If not, you may want to consider getting it here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant compilation of his music to 1990
Surely, Elton needs no introduction, as he was hugely popular around the world. During the period covered by this compilation, he only had two number one hits in Britain although he had several in America during the same period. Since then, he has had at least four further UK number one hits. So while many people consider the seventies and eighties to be Elton's golden years, he has demonstrated that he is not finished yet.

3-0 out of 5 stars GOOD STARTER, BUT.................
.......incomplete. Once I got a hold of this album, I'm like thinking to myself, well this is pretty good but one exception, you urge for more Bowie because it doesn't have every song I like of his, and to be quite honest, I like his earlier sets better, like Space Oddity, or even Ziggy Stardust, or maybe even Diamond Dogs. Well the list can go on and on but I would be ramblin now wouldn't I. Yeh I guess it's fair to say if you're a casual listener this would be good enough, but if you like his work, go out and just get his studio albums, they're more worth it, unless you like to here just bits and pieces like Let's Dance or Fashion, or even Chinagirl, what about The Man Who Sold The World, or even Rock and Roll Suicide. Well, either way be warned.

5-0 out of 5 stars BOWIE KEEPS SWINGING
DAVID BOWIE-CHANGESBOWIE: If ever a word aptly described the former David (Don't call me a Monkee) Jones, the title of his early classic CHANGES would be it. From the beautifully eerie SPACE ODDITY and wham-glam of SUFFRAGETTE CITY, to the neo-soul of YOUNG AMERICANS and the calculated club cut LET'S DANCE,Bowie has seldom repeated himself. A seamless combination of the CHANGESONEBOWIE and CHANGESTWOBOWIE anthologies, here is most everything you could ask for hit-wise, the lone downer being a less than necessary remix of FAME. Throughout his career, the Thin White Duke has been blessed with a long line of stellar guitar foils, including Mick Ronson, Carlos Alomar, Robert Fripp, even a pre-fame Stevie Ray Vaughn, yet it is Ziggy himself who is always the Starman.RATING: FIVE OH BOWIES!
5-0 out of 5 stars 18 classic bowie songs, perfect!
Let me start by saying that David bowie is, along with the Beatles, one of the most influential artists in popular music history. This 1990 compilation collects bowies most important songs from 1969 to 1984, you couldn't really name any other classic bowie song after Blue Jean, these songs trace bowie's amazing journey from the folkie-psychedelic start to glam-rock icon, from british soul singer to pre new wave pioneer to finally pop superstar in the 1980's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mott the Dog 210th year Anniversary Edition
At last; a proper release for this masterpiece of a live album in tribute to one of the great rock'n'roll bands of the mid-seventies . Mott the Hoople "Live" was originally released in 1974 , but because of time restraints, only part of two concerts were put out as the first vinyl bound release . This consisted of five songs from a concert of their week long residency at the Uris theatre Broadway May 1974, and three songs from their end of tour Christmas gigs 1973 , at London's Hammersmith Odeon, hardly satisfactory . As none of the songs ran in order , there were two songs midway through each side "Rose" and"Rest In Peace " which were used in the sets to give the members of the band a bit of a breather from all the leaping about, neither side had an opening number , and side one ended with a truncated version of the final encore, whilst side two closed with the end of the set proper, so although there were plenty of flashes of excitement , nothing like the full thing.
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting for Mott-o-philes
I've always liked the original release of this live album from Mott the Hoople, but this goes a bit farther, presenting the complete recordings from two different dates and venues. The new songs from the Broadway venue include:Born Late 58, One of the Boys, Hymn for the Dudes, Marionette, and a medley of Driving Sister / Crash Street Kids / Violence. The new songs from the Hammersmith gig include:Driving Sister, Sucker, Sweet Jane, Roll Away the Stone, All the Young Dudes, and Walking With a Mountain. If you are following me, there are some songs that appear in two versions:Driving Sister, Violence, Sucker, All the Young Dudes, and Walking with a Mountain.Good news: some of the new stuff is a delight to hear, particularlly Marionette and Hymn for the Dudes.Bad news:I can see why drummer Dale Griffin left some of these off the original release;Ian Hunter's singing is occasionally flat, and the band is somewhat sloppy compared to a live concert from today. But I suspect that this release is closer to the actual performance than a lot of live recordings done now (with endless studio overdubs). And these boys sure could ROCK!!! So if you want a powerful live document of Mott the Hoople, warts and all, circa 1974, this is for you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Live Mott, wish I saw the concert(s)
Any classic rock fan, especially the fans who love "live" classic rock would enjoy this special release. The more you play it, the more you will like it.I also recommend Ian Hunter's "Welcome To The Club", another live release with Mick Ronson. You won't be disappointed with either release.Play it LOUD ! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great sound, great album
...and if you're fortunate enough to find it, I recommend buying the version with the bonus DVD, which chronicles the making of Yellow Brick Road. When I bought it, it cost the same as the 2 SACD set without the DVD, so it was still a great deal.
5-0 out of 5 stars 5 For Album itself but make sure youbuy the regular CD not the SACD....
But it does not play on all CD players due to it being a SACD.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the top rock albums ever
In October, 1973 "Goodby Yellow Brick Road" was released as two LPs and re-released in 2003 as a two CD set under the cover of "30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" in a hybrid SACD format. Wonderful way to treat this classic guys!! I'm not going into great detail because there are other good write-ups here that suffice but I will say that this set belongs in any collectors library. Highlights include: 'Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding', 'Candle In The Wind', 'Bennie and The Jets' (my favorite), 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road', 'All The Young Girls Love Alice', 'Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting' and a bonus 'Screw You (Young Man Blues)'. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The birth of Alice Cooper and what a monster
The birth of a phantom into a crib alongside Frank Zappa. With its eyes on a Detroit spewing forth a heady brew including Mitch Ryder, The Stooges and MC4, just add a dash of psychedelia and a splash of Sabbath and, voila, you have the earliest incarnation of Alice Cooper that is Pretties for You. Only a band unencumbered with the baggage of success would have the time to explore music for the sake of exploration itself. The result is a mix of hard rocking early metal, surreal pleasantries skipping in fairy boots in Neverland and the ominous feeling that the riders of the apocalypse have visited the world outside of the building and are about to break down the door. Sure, the result is a mess. However, the potential of the musicians adds a unity to the whole that makes for compelling listening. Moving from the garage-hard, pre-punk assaults to surreal but listenable, almost pop, fantasy tunes through to free form stream of conscious workouts can be a lot to assimilate. If you have come to this looking for more of the anthemic rock songs of the later Alice you may be disappointed, to hear talented musicians producing great experimental music near the height of their creativity, this is for you. If you liked this then the successor, Easy Action, is a more focused package of the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alice Cooper Psychedelic Rock
If you are like me you didn't find this album until much later on after listening to "I'm Eighteen" or "No More Mr. Nice Guy." When I started to collect Alice Cooper back catalog of Lp's I had no idea what was going to come out of my speakers. I just had this expression as if being dropped alone on a planet a millions years from Earth with only a rubber band.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of Alice's best albums, not to be overlooked!
Alice Cooper never made a bad album, every time he changed up his style it came out great, DaDa is great proof of this. While there is quite a bit of synth work on here, Alice still maintains his edge with strong lyrics and music, the guitar work on these songs is great, and despite what some reviewers are saying, overall the album is excellent new wave rock, the only thing on here I would even consideer close to being 80's pop is Dyslexia, which isn't a bad song, I like it, but it can be boring after a bit. Overall, it's a great album, the great intro DaDa sets the tone for the album, and it keeps rolling with the excellent Enough's Enough, the creepy story track Former Lee Warmer, then No Man's land which is an excellent song as well, and into the ok Dyslexia. However the album quickly picks back up with the excellent Scarlet & Sheba, then the hilarious I Love America (Alice as a redneck trucker, hilarious! Why isn't there a video for this?), and then from the good Fresh Blood to the excellent closing ballad Pass The Gun Around.4 stars! Had ths music to Dyslexia been reworked a bit, it would get 5. Also check out his other early 80's albums.

5-0 out of 5 stars SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOKY!!!!
Excellent just EXCELLENT, there's so much going on here musically and lyrically and its so creepy, unlike anything I have ever heard before. Also, this is a rarity and a true collectors item, do not pass on this even if it sounds funny on first listen.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very '80's
Dada is a fun album but a little strange. Well what Alice Cooper album isn't, right? This one is a little different in that he experiments with computer generated drum sounds and doesn't use much real percussion at all. I think that any of these songs would sound at place on the "TOP GUN" soundtrack because it sounds very '80's to me. Of course it still has Alice Coopers's little touch of psychotic flair and sense of humor. This is a good ablum and very entertaining. Alice Cooper fans should love it even if it is a little different than some of his classic albums. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A victory for "Victoria'.
This disc was released as a benefit for "Victoria Williams", but I feel like I've benefited from it myself as well. Her songs are all good, but the group of musicians covering them is even better. "Pearl Jam" probably got the most people to buy this, however I like the songs done by "Soul Asylum", "Evan Dando", "Waterboys", and "Lucinda Williams" just as much. "The Jayhawks" and "Matthew Sweet" do a good job too. Basically it's just a really good bunch of music. Also, there's currently 121 used copies on here for sale, so it shouldn't be too hard to come by.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ziggy and the Thin White Duke Grow Up
By far the better of David Bowie's two live albums, STAGE is an impressive document of the chameleonic rocker's 1978 North American tour, with an outstandingly tight band helping the Maestro to recreate some of his most carefully constructed studio recordings in concert. Their whelming success in this endeavor is indeed a pleasure to hear.
4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Bowie Live Effort
Even though I prefer 1974's David Live to 1977's Stage, I still think that this is a pretty good representation of David Bowie's live act at the time.Adrian Belew/Carlos Alomar on guitars.Dennis Davis on drums.George Murray on bass. This is in the midst of the Bowie/Eno compilations and yet Eno is absent on the tour.Suspicious? You bet.Their union was probably dead even at this early date.Still, Bowie trudged on.No longer the wunderkind he had previously been with such classic releases as Ziggy Stardust, Diamond Dogs and Hunky Dory, Bowie is starting to reach the age of medocrity and that's musn't feel too good.Still Stage has all the staples: Ziggy, Soul Love, Fame, Station To Station, Five Years & "Heroes".Also quite a bit of the Bowie/Eno instrumentals are represented here, too.Warsawza is among the better of them.I still prefer David Live but this is an interesting glimpse into the mixed and mumbled times that Bowie was facing at that strange turn in his career.Listenable and enjoyable.
4-0 out of 5 stars Infinitely Better than "David Live"
Perhaps this album was issued as a means of overcoming the rather disastrous "David Live" from a few years earlier, or perhaps Bowie just felt it was once again time to document his live show. Either way, Stage adequately represents Bowie's multi-faceted career without sounding excessive, forced or extraneous. Full of incredible musicianship and focused in a manner that defined Bowie's character at the time, it rights everything that was wrong with David Live. It is also perhaps one of the most schizophrenic live albums ever made, since Bowie skims from various stages of his career without any attempt to conjoin his multiple phases of fashion.

3-0 out of 5 stars Stone Cold GET OVER IT!
I almost didn't get a chance to write this review.I was too busy laughing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Origonaly I bought it because of American Idol
At first, I just wanted to hear the songs they sang on idol, but I soon got hooked, and know The CD is never to far from me. Everyone needs tihs!

2-0 out of 5 stars Queen wasn't on American Idol
< RANT ON > The lead singer of Bad Company, Paul Rodgers, along with the guitarist and drummer from Queen, played on American Idol. They can use the name 'Queen' all they want, I'm not impressed with the dishonesty that is taken for granted these days, like bands using the names of Styx, Little River Band, The Doors, ELO, you name it, in order to get the needed funding for tours and new records and promotion and stuff. At least Paul McCartney doesn't go touring with some bunch of musicians he pretends are 'The Beatles'.< RANT OFF >In terms of how well this represents some angle of Queen - they DID pick a lot of of Queen's best, but I think really pointless omissions were made.Leaving out songs like 'Keep Yourself Alive' (especially in a rock-oriented set of songs), 'Killer Queen', 'Somebody to Love' to me is like leaving Hey Jude and Sgt Pepper off a Beatles compilation.Thing is, they didn't get many tracks (just 13, and TWO OF THEM ARE NOT EVEN QUEEN SONGS!)This is just a marketing tie-in to 'The New Queen'that should be sold at McDonalds. But that's business for you.And if you really like these songs, hey, get the CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knock it - I dare you!
Freddie Mercury's powerful vocals, Brian May's baroque guitar, Taylor and Deacon's bone rattling beats; they're all there. It's just another step forward for Queen. It shows the contrast and intelligence that Queen are famous for...rock, ballads, disco; its all here. I had my doubts about this album, but I fell in love with it as soon as I got it.
4-0 out of 5 stars A true oddity in Queen's catalogue. In a good way, of course.
I didn't care for it when I first picked it up several years ago. But I've come to appreciate it as a unique part of Queen's catalogue and a fun album of cool funk & dance with signature Queen flavors. "Cool Cat" puts me in a great mood and is probably my favorite track, other than the amazing duet with Bowie, "Under Pressure." Other highlights are the cheesy but enjoyable "Back Chat" "Put Out The Fire," and the beautiful "Las Palabras de Amor." Regardless of what critics might say, this is hardly the low point of Queen's career. It's not The Game Part 2 or Night At The Opera Part 2, because that's not what Queen set out to do. It's just a good 80s dance/pop record.

4-0 out of 5 stars Changing Styles
Hot Space was a change in direction for the changing musical scene. It wasn't a welcome change as Hot Space was one of Queen's weakest offerings. It was more funk, less rock but the style didn't suit Queen.
