Editorial Review

One question would be: What took him so long? After all, a contemporary like Van Morrison has sold boatloads of his single-disc best-of set to buyers wary of diving into that deep catalog without a primer to get them started. So three and a half decades into his solo career, Neil Young finally delivers his version of that most modest of albums--the pre-holiday "hits" overview. What's surprising, coming from such a proud maverick, is its conventionality. Granted, the original master mixes are a boon for fans, but otherwise, there's not much here for loyalists who quite likely already possess the original "Like a Hurricane" on a couple of albums, as well as a handful of live interpretations scanning the years. Since Young cracked the Top 10 only once (1972's "Heart of Gold"), this set is built around concert staples as "Cinnamon Girl," "Rockin' in the Free World," and "Hey, Hey, My My" rather than chart favorites. Despite Young's honorable standing as a still-vital graybeard, the disc is skewed heavily toward his early work, shortchanging some mighty productive recent years. Peripheral fans may find this set of interest, but faithful followers are better advised to investigate the DVD version, which, at least, includes videos, photos, lyrics, and Web links. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Single CD Collection of Neil Young's Hits
Making a single disc of Neil Young's biggest hits is not an easy task. Back in 1977, he released a two disc career retrospective called Decade, which is still one of the greatest compilations in rock and roll history.
5-0 out of 5 stars THANKS, NEIL. THIS COULDN'T BE ANY BETTER !
If we look hard enough, we can always find something we don't like about "Greatest Hits" and "Best of" releases by our favorite recording artists. Mostly, it's the songs left off or the songs left on, but it can be other things as well. This time I'm not going to let my expectations ruin, what is to me, a perfect "Neil Young Greatest Hits" cd. The remastering is exquisite, and this is most evident on "Needle and the Damage Done". It sounds like Neil and his guitar are right in the room. The song selection is perfect, with a nice balance between the acoustic songs and the rockers. The songs are in chronological order, which gives the listener a sense of Young's career history. The album cover is a photo of Neil with an acoustic guitar, from a time in his career that most people probably associate with him. There are no songs after 1992, but rest assured that there will be a GH vol. 2 in the future. I'm a long time fan of Neil Young, and as a concise cd of his best work, this couldn,t be any better.
5-0 out of 5 stars Near perfect disc for the casual Neil Young fan
THE BAND: Neil Young (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, piano) and an assortment of musicians (too many to mention here) over the past 4 decades.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reconnecting with Neil Young
A big Neil Young fan in the 60s and 70s, I hadn't followed his music in many years (or any other popular music, for that matter). One of my 8th grade students, knowing how I feel about the war in Iraq, gave me Neil's LIVING WITH WAR. I loved it, so I checked out reviews of PRAIRIE WIND, and I bought it. As far as I'm concerned, it's a masterwork. The songs are incredibly moving, especially for someone who is Neil's age. I love this man for having made it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neil Young is Mr Soul
This is an essential Neil Young album. Taking yet another turn in his long, interesting and forever relevant career Neil follows a country rock muse and his words and music is delivered in a heltfelt and moving way that is straight from his soul. Neil faced several personal traumas during 2005, not the least the death of his father and his own health concerns which he has since rebounded from in emphatic fashion.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the DEFINITIVE Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band performance...
If you want to know what a real Detroit rock concert was like back in the 70's, this is the CD. The performance, the production, the selection of songs - this is just a great concert experience - and its the only CD I carry in the car (I know it's 30 years old, but ...)
4-0 out of 5 stars Bob Segar - Live Bullet
A timeless arena rock live album .Bob Segar at his best rocking Detroit in the 1970's.The hits of that time are all here-Turn the Page, Katmandu, Ramblin Gamblin Man, Travlin Man, etc.The Bruce Springsteen of the Midwest isthe best way to describe Segar's songwriting style.Bob pays homage to Chuck Berry with great rock n Roll riffs throughout and the rocking version of "Let it Rock".Bo Diddley gets equal treatment in Bob's cover of the song "Bo Diddley" that goes into Who do you Love.Great album everyone should own. ... "Sounds Of Summer" is better than the collections "Endless Summer", "Made In The USA", and "20 Good Vibrations", among others. And yes I have owned them all. This is attempting to be the equal of "The Beatles 1" and "Elvis 30 number ones", and of course it succeeds. 75 minutes of 30 Beach Boy hits, everything from "Surfer Girl" to "Kokomo". And it sounds great too. This is perfect for the casual fan, because it not only gives you the biggest of hits, but minor gems like "Don't Worry baby", "Come Go With Me", and "I Can Hear Music" also. Overall, it's the obvious choice for your first or only Beach Boys disc. And if you think this is just "oldies" music, guess again.

If you like Classic Rock and the Beach Boys, then this CD is a must for your collection. While listing to the music you could close you eyes and imagine you cruzing and listing your 8-track blasting out the tunes with that special someone next to you.

When David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash created this pop super trio in 1968 after their splits from the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and The Hollies, respectively, it would have been a pipedream that a hits package released 37 years later would sound as eternal and essential as this one. The 19 songs straddle the four-album, landscape-altered timeframe between 1969’s post-Woodstock debut Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Hits Collection, but where's Ohio and Woodstock?
Crosby, Stills, and Nash sound like angels when they sing together. Theur harmonies are almost unsurpassed, rivaled only by the Everly Brothers or the Beach Boys or the Eagles. This new cd brings out their biggest hits, emphasizing their 1960s-1970s songs, with a couple of big smashes from 1982 (Wasted on the Way, Southern Cross) added to the mix.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cd Great Songwriters
As several of you have mentioned, this is a great cd.It contains a lotof CSN's popular songs, and it is a good introduction for new fans of CSN, or for those who aren't new fans. Some of the highlights on this cd for me are: "Suite Judy Blue Eyes,"Wooden Ships," "See The Changes," Shadow Captain," "Long Time Gone," "Guinnivere," and "Wasted on the Way."

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Pink Floyd
When someone mentions Pink Floyd nowadays, all anyone thinks of is "Dark Side of the Moon" or "The Wall", and once in a while, "Wish You Were Here". Those are great albums, but there is one album missing from that group and that is "Meddle". I am 14 years old and have listened to many Pink Floyd albums but "Meddle" has to be one of my favorites. It kicks off with some wind effects before plunging into the bass-driven "One of These Days". I can definately say that "One of These Days" is one of my favorite Pink Floyd songs. From the opening bass lines to Nick Mason growling "One of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces" and then the all out rocking end, this song stays strong the whole way through. Next comes "A Pillow of Winds", which is much softer then the opening track or almost anything else before it. It is very melodic and slow, but it's very good. Then we have "Fearless", which is an excellent accoustic song. It is more up-tempo then "A Pillow of Winds" but not nearly as up-tempo as "One of These Days", but all in all a good example of accoustic Floyd. After "Fearless" comes "San Tropez" which sort of has a blusey feel to it and is a great song. The blues theme continues with a slow, accoustic blusey song called "Seamus" which is pretty good, possibly the weakest song on the album, but that doesn't mean it's not good, it's just not as good as the excellent songs that come before it (on a 1 to 10 scale I'd give it a 7). Closing out the album is an experimental song called "Echoes". It runs at 23 minutes in length and took a whole album side upon "Meddle"s vinyl release. "Echoes" is a great experimental song and if you have the patience, I would reccomend giving it a listen.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Floyd Titles

5-0 out of 5 stars La mejor introducción a la música de The Beatles
5-0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Introduction to the Fab Four
Supervised by producer George Martin, this 1973 compilation introduced many second-generation fans to the timeless music of John, Paul, George and Ringo. "The Beatles: 1967-1970" covers most of the essential tracks from "Sgt. Pepper" through "Let It Be" -- along with hit singles not featured on the original LPs. Incidentally, the memorable cover photograph was intended for the group's aborted "Get Back" album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Early Beatles
'A Hard Day's Night' is not only a great rock album and great soundtrack, it is rightly regarded as the best of Beatlemania itself. There is enough of the familiar and hidden classics to make this puchase worthwhile.Certainly the title track, "Can't Buy Me Love," "And I Love Her," and "If I Fell" are worthy classics. ("If I Fell" is one of the best of the Beatles' love songs--maybe one of the best love songs period, for that matter.)Rock songs and ballads are masterfully made and mixed on this, their first album to contain all original compositions. The quality is consistent throughout. To paraphrase British writer Roy Carr, the second half is even more worthwhile."Any Time at All" is great hard rock; "I'll Cry Instead," is a fine country-rock song(foreshadowing the next 'Beatles for Sale' album) and the closer "I'll Be Back Again," is a classic Lennon ballad waiting to be unearthed. The second half also has a fine McCartney ballad, "Things We SaidToday". The exhuberant spirit never wanes on this CD and is extended with songs like "I'm Happy Just to Dance with You" and "I Should Have Known Better".Song for song, the mix, the quality, and energy are solid on this album. For those who only buy Beatles' collections, this C.D. will not seem redundant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good after 40+ Years
If you are a classic rock fan who has exhausted the Beatles' later catalogue and aren't sure if you like the early stuff as much, listen to this CD. It will convince you of how great the early Beatles were (something that people born after the 1960s might find harder to believe than those who were alive then). "I Should Have Known Better" was one of the first songs I tried to figure out on guitar. But I never bought the CD until much later. I purchased A Hard Day's Night to get closer to being a Beatles completist. I didn't expect it to be as good as it is. It's great. As Albert Goldman said, this was the closest that John came to making a solo record while he was with the Beatles. Paul's work is not nearly as strong, but George showed potential here as a songwriter. A Hard Day's Night is perhaps the Beatles' crispest and cleanest album. It rocks, has great harmonies, and crackles with the energy of guys on the top of the world. After listening to Pepper for the millionth time, you might need some good old rock and roll. A Hard Day's Night delivers that.

4-0 out of 5 stars You've got to love everything that they do!
The Beatles' 1964 album A Hard Day's Night not only is titled after a weird phrase once said by Ringo Starr, but it also symbolizes the fab four in their teenybopping, world conquering heyday long before the highly artistic and sophisticated efforts of Abbey Road, Sgt Pepper, and The White Album saw the light of day.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Red Album and Blue Album..."The All-Star Team" for Beatle songs
I grew up with these compilations,my sister practically wore them out!! Later shortly after Lennon was murdered...I became a fan when I got Magical Mystery Tour and a cheap vee-jay knock off of 1962-1963 stuff("Love Me Do","Please,Please Me",ect;)..for Christmas 1980.....well I was always familiar with the Beatles hits ...but not familiar as much with stuff "that didn't make the red/blue album".....so I listened to and bought alot of the Capitol stuff such as Beatles 65,Rubber Soul,Yesterday and Today ,ect;.....Long story short....I became a fan....................The Red Album as well as The Blue Album feature songs that were #1's on the charts, standout songs from albums, and singles (which alot went to #1)....Why I compare it toan 'all-star team' is because it has it's snubs..........."If I Fell" "I'll Be Back" "I Should Have Known Better" are definately 'snubs'...."What You're Doing" from Beatles VI/Beatles for Sale was a 'snub'......No George Harrison songs made the Red Album..."If I Needed Someone" and "I Want To Tell You" could be 'snubs'..........I'm not counting 'cover songs' such as "Twist and Shout" ...I agree that they don't belong on THIS album .....My point is.. they all can't make it....No matter how worthy ...Great compilation to start with.

Riff rock had been what Jimmy Page's former band, the Yardbirds, were all about, and on Led Zeppelin's second album, released, like its predecessor, in 1969, the inventive guitarist demonstrated that he'd indeed learned his lessons well. Witness "Whole Lotta Love," a woozy epic based on one simple, head-banging-friendly guitar riff. Or the mock-dramatic "Heartbreaker," propelled by far more intricate but similarly effective note squashing. Between Page's sonic wizardry, John Bonham beating his drums into submission ("Moby Dick"), and the juice running down Robert Plant's leg ("The Lemon Song"), Led Zeppelin here just about succeeded in raising rock & roll excess to an art form. 5-0 out of 5 stars Led Zeppelin's sophomore effort proves they were no fluke!
Led Zeppelin's second album Led Zeppelin II was released in October of 1969.
3-0 out of 5 stars Whole Lotta Riffs
Led Zep II is an innovative studio album with Page & Jones at the top of their studio wizardry. The album kicks off with the famous redundant Whole Lotta Love riff and continues through the over indulgent psycedelic bridge one is truly glad when this song ends. What is & What Should Never Be is definitely the album highlight with Zep firing on all cylinders. The bluesy Lemon Song and the poppy Thank You follows. The old war horse combo Heartbreaker/Living Loving Maid keep the album rocking and Page seems like he has riffs to burn. From here the album cools off with Plant's Hobbit influenced wispy Ramble On. the lame space filler Moby Dick instumental follows. The album closes with another highlight "Bring it On Home" a rockin blues tribute. Although Zep's creativity showed this album the music sounds lifted like a Lenny Kravitz album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Its a Classic
This album is one of the least talked about album but one of their most famous. With songs Like Whole Lotta Love and Heartbreaker its already worth buying but with other songs like moby dick and livin lovin maid (she's just a woman) it is an even better album.so do yourself a favor and buy this album. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Third time's a charm?
I'm not going to particularly knock this release, but I'm weird in that I try to save the little stickers that come on the cellophane of CDs (I carefully peel them off and then stick them back on the jewel case) and I thought people might find something interesting. For their 1996 Journey - "Greatest Hits" release, this is how Sony hyped it on the sticker: "NEW 20 BIT DIGITAL TRANSFER USING SONY'S SBM PROCESS." Since that was actually the second time this album had been issued on compact disc, maybe the third time's a charm. Or, maybe it was time to milk a few more dollars from the Journey catalog?

3-0 out of 5 stars Still not perfect (to me anyway)
Journey has been one of my guilty pleasures for many years, though I own none of their CD's, I was hoping some adjustments would be made for the remaster of their greatest hits.

Editorial Review

The Mamas and the Papas had a sound that helped define a portion of the 1960s. Their breezy folk classics had a bit of San Francisco psychedelia woven in, and, despite the sweet harmonies, there was also a noticeably dark feel to some of their more popular work. "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday" both utilized enough minors to give them a spooky edge. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You can believe your eyes and ears, all over again !
This is an awesome collection ,of the Mama's & the Papa's finest tunes.(John Phillips may have been a London chimney-sweep,in a past life.I can just sense it,in his song, the 'Dancing Bear'.Dancing Bear is also laureated by Denny Doherty, also his favorite M&P classic.)It's funny when you have four very different musicial personas, gathered as an incarnate group(-where's Harvey?),and the unforgettable magic they can make.Fate is cruel. The songs that John Phillips wrote for "WolfKing of L.A.",were meant for the now-defunct group. When Dunhill Records sued the four, they quasi-happily reunited,to fulfill their original contract agreement. The magic was there, yet it wasn't the same sparkling lustre.Papa John's stygian dope-journey through the 1970s,is shocking.(He really should have read ,'Diary of a Drug Fiend',by Aleister Crowley.)When the fog lifted,he was back to his musical best.Even in 1987,he co-wrote the number one hit, "Kokomo" ,for the Beach Boys.Think about all the tunes,he could have penned, if he wasn't in his own nepenthean lotus-land on Long Island.-This Mama's & Papa's repertoire is immense and still impressive! A 'Must Have',for all music fans!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive, Easy-to-find Collection
There seem to be a ton of greatest hits compilations available from the Mamas and the Papas, and I admit I haven't researched any of those, so I can't compare this one to them. I do know, however, that this is an excellent collection of their music. The Mamas and the Papas were a folk-rock group in the 1960s who produced a great string of hits that now help define the 'oldies' generation. Their male and female vocals create a very good blend.
4-0 out of 5 stars oldies but goodies
Mama & Papa Greatest Hits is certainly one of the great band from the past. This take me back to the good old days.Would have rate this as a 5 stars, but the re-mastering sound quality wasn't the best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Strange, beautiful
Desert Wanderer we are of one mind on this, 3rd Stone is Hendrix's greatest compositon.
5-0 out of 5 stars revolutionary
I remember going to visit my cousin Don in Texas when I was in about the eighth grade. He said "You've got to listen to this new guy. I've never heard anything like it."The guy was Jimi Hendrix and the record was Are You Experienced.Over the next 3-4 years Jimi Hendrix would rewrite the vocabulary of the electric guitar. Yet IMHO he would never be as revolutionary as he was on this record. He is both iconoclastic, yet commercial.
5-0 out of 5 stars Many Thanks To MTV Supporter
I think that I owe a thanks to the dumba** individual who goes by the name of "MTV Supporter". I needed a good laugh and your reviews (If you can call them that) had me laughing like there was no tomorrow. You'll notice that this guy has several accounts. It seems that his name for one of them is "You'll watch MTV if you know what is good for you. "I am a smart person... and you know it. Don't deny it. I know more than all of you. I watch MTV, which proves it."

2-0 out of 5 stars Aerosmith.......Overrated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Aerosmith were one of the worst most annoying bands of all time. They only made 3 decent songs in Same old song and Dance, Seasons of wither, and Janies got a gun. Rest of the songs just stink explosively. Avoid most albums from this hugely overrated band, steven tyler screams, he can't sing at all??? this is music for drug addicts.

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent Aerosmith collection.
Aerosmith are one of the great rocking bands besides Metallica.
