5-0 out of 5 stars This and "The Band" Invented Americana
From today's perspective, it's hard to imagine just how much of an impact this album had on the state of contemporary music, not least of all because it was recorded by the Grateful Dead. Up until this album, the Dead were an underground cult phenomenon with little to offer in the way of mass appeal. Furthermore, their previous studio efforts were too strange to suggest that they might be capable of something as extraordinary as what they offer here. More than anything else, the songs on Workingman's Dead sound as if they were old folk/blues songs derived from the public domain and adapted for faithful reproduction. That each song was an original, contemporary composition shows a level of maturity and growth that is simply astounding. Even more astounding is the tight focus of the songwriting. Previous studio albums by the Grateful Dead were rambling and opaque exercises in psychedelia that stood out mostly for their reckless experimentation. Here, the band doesn't waste a single note, while every word paints a specific portrait of the character portrayed.
5-0 out of 5 stars MY FRIENDS THEY COME AROUND...
This album always comes around, over and over and over, it is that enjoyable. It almost feels inane and redundant to review this, an album everyone and their monkey's uncle knows is one of The Dead's best, and even one of the greatest American albums from any genre (I usually prefer reviewing my favorites that get unfairly maligned or seem to be underappreciated).Funny enough, I have even slightly higher praise for Blues for Allah for its intense fusiony energy and trippy atmosphere and American Beauty because harmony rules my Seventh Heaven, Wake of the Flood nipping at it's heels. You could say Workingman's emphasizes a tougher, rock flavoring with a huge nod to roots country (for readers not familiar with the recording). But with Jerry and all, any "sound" will end up BEING pure Dead since they are so unique in general, putting their beloved stamp on all they do.Jerry still loved the pedal steel at this time, and some of his best playing is here (the extra Dire Wolf sung instead by Weir is one cool example).Turn this up at any event, party or just alone with your thoughts and you can be assured of joyful waves of sound that will make it all swing again (gonna have us a HIGH TIME, livin' the GOOD LIFE - I think this is my favorite on here...well, along with Dire Wolf and Uncle John's Band and Black Peter and New Speedway Boogie and...they're all so great).Makes a great gift for cool people who are not familiar with it (beware giving it to Rush Limbo knuckleheads since this is associated with liberal radio and lifestyles - they just might crucifies ya).

5-0 out of 5 stars gira magica y misteriosa....la verdadera!

5-0 out of 5 stars All hail bob dylan
Put quite simply this incredible live album made me cry made me angry for Hurricane Carter made me move my feet and made me feel at peace with myself at the end. What more can you ask for in a live album. I actually perfer the live renditions of all of the songs from Desire to the studio recordings. And on no other live album have i heard Dylan sing with such confidence and brovado.Quite simply the best live album ever recorded.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forgotten Gems
Wonderful performances from the first song to last and best part is Dylan seems to be enjoying himself and the audience. After getting too famous in the mid-60's it's great to finally hear the period where he was able to come back and just perform without a posse of lunatics treating him like the Second Coming.

5-0 out of 5 stars no scam..
I love Steely Dan and this was the record, now CD that I always found myself playing above all the others. It has great tracks that weren't on the radio that much, as much as the stuff that followed it and preceded it. My favorite tracks are Haitian Divorce and Kid Charlemagne but honestly there isn't a bad track.

4-0 out of 5 stars Donald and Walter's dark adventure
" The Royal Scam" is one of the most cryptic, tounge in cheek Dan recordings, and that is saying a lot. The music is very easy on the ears; the lyrics are an odyssey to behold. Humanity's darker inclinations are explored from an inside out perspective. From the loner kid who traverses the Caves of Altimira to the "Stranger" caught up in a mobster's world, this CD delivers for the times we have all felt out on the fringe. To lighten the mood a bit, our boys offer gems like " Green Earring" and " The Fez", the latter being a song most listeners will appreciate for the ironic humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST
NO matter what anyone believes or says, This is the best album that Steely Dan has ever made. PERIOD....Some say Aja, which is also a masterpiece, but it doesn't even touch the Royal Scam. I don't understand how anyone can even compare this to Pretzel Logic, which is the most dredful thing Dan put out in the 70's. The sounds are country rock laden, and only a few cuts really shine. This album, every single song is amazing, and what a way to end the album with the Royal Scam track. If you are new to the band, this is the one to get. This has a perfect mix of rock, blues, and jazz. So start here, go to AJA, and then Katy Lied.....but nothing touches this...! ... Read more

Popularly known as the "Brown Album," this is the collection people first think of when this august outfit's name is mentioned. The four-parts Canadian, one-part Arkansan quintet's sophomore effort boasts more soon-to-be-staples than any other Band studio recording, what with the likes of the Joan Baez hit "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," "Across the Great Divide," and "Up on Cripple Creek" standing out among the dozen uniformly memorable tracks. Lesser-known group originals such as the achingly lovely "Whispering Pines" and the cryptic "Unfaithful Servant," however, play crucial roles in giving this 1969 classic its unique flavor. 5-0 out of 5 stars Archaism for your Digitisation
I have recently had one of those enormously disappointing moments that we all encounter in art, right at the start of Scorsese's famous "Last Waltz" film.Never knowing which one Robbie Robertson was in The Band, I presumed he was one of the rather more, shall we say "grizzled" individuals staring like some 1880s gold prospector out of the photos accompanying their eponymous second album.Instead, it turns out that Robertson is a still-young looking, handsome and seemingly straightforward guy who just wants to go on stage and have a good time. This realisation is so deflating precisely because the songs on this album sound so weathered and old that they surely could not have been written by anyone under the age of 92.It just goes to show that mysterious hand of talent touches indiscriminately.

Indeed, there were many who thought that it would take an event as cataclysmic as the one described in the album title to get these seminal '70s soft-rockers back together. But here they are, revisiting some of their most beloved tunes as well as four new ones, on this mostly live, largely acoustic disc. Frey, Henley, Walsh, Schmit, and Felder tackle iconic Eagles standards like "Hotel California," "Tequila Sunrise," "Take It Easy," "Desperado," and "Life in the Fast Lane" and new tunes like "Get Over It" and "Love Will Keep Us Alive" with the smoothly cocky assurance that originally made them icons. 5-0 out of 5 stars Blood stained the ivories...
A rough and tumble, powerhouse rock n' roll band, Aerosmith was America's answer to British Rock. 'Toys in the Attic', released in March 1975, may not be their greatest album (that would be the follow-up 'Rocks'), but it's pretty darn close. Building their success the old fashioned way as the late John Houseman would say (They earned it!), Aerosmith were the ultimate road warriors, playing America's high school gyms and social halls while worrying if they were about to get the axe from their own record company and they came to the symbolize hard rock excellence in the 1970's. The anthems are well known and probably overplayed for some on classic rock radio. "Sweet Emotion" will always be in my top three...the into, the outro, the sleeze, the sass...man its all there, including the voice box guitar! "Toys", the song, opens the album with primal urgency, kind of like Boston's own "Immigrant Song". "No More No More" is as good as it gets; lyrics (being on the road has got to be bitch!), arrangement, production - all flawless! "Round and Round" is Sabbathesque, as heavy as Aerosmith would ever get! "Walk This Way" bugs me now but it is still one of the most inflential songs of the last 30 years (rock and rap anybody). "Adam's Apple" is more my style, back when Cain was Abel! (check ou the live version from 'Pandora's Box' with Joe "F'n Perry saying "this is hard work" before he launches into the riff!). Whatever drugs the band was doing, an oh my were they aplenty, they seemed to help them create this timeless material. An although Mister Tyler may not remember "You See Me Cryin" (that story is hilarious in the book "Walk This Way"), Aerosmith enthusiasts will never forget the merry-go round in 1975, the year that America threw her hat into the ring of hard rock greatness.

4-0 out of 5 stars good, but simple
This is a good album, i've heard aerosmith's best. They are put as 70s "metal".This is just not my favorite. it is too simple, the songs are slow, repetitive, and sound like joe perry is just using close together frets over and over.i like

Once upon a time, Rod Stewart was not vamping indiscriminately about "Hot Legs" and asking "D'ya Think I'm Sexy?" He was a singer with a gravel-voice approximation of Sam Cooke and excellent taste in cover material. Here, he's toned down with folksy covers of Tim Hardin ("Reason to Believe"), Bob Dylan ("Tomorrow is Such a Long Time"), and Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup (via Elvis, "That's All Right Mama"). He tops his interpretive abilities with two originals that have since become standards ("Maggie May, " "Every Picture Tells A Story"). Quite a different Rod from the one the world has come to know. 5-0 out of 5 stars What can I say, an absolute classic, GREAT BAND
I just heard this classic after not hearing it all for many years.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great White British Soul Classic
Although Rod Stewart had been on the British blues scene since 1965, most notably as vocalist with the Jeff Beck group from 1968-1970, he was still relatively unknown. It wasn't until the reformation of the Faces in 1970, when they were joined by Ronnie Wood, also from the Jeff Beck group, that Stewart finally found his niche. With the making of EPTAS, a classic album was born and with the release of 'Maggie May' as a single, Rod Stewart became a household name.
5-0 out of 5 stars Rod Stewart tells a memorable story
Easily one of the best "classic" rock records ever. I'd put it up there with Exile on Main Street, and that's pretty high. How can a rockin' song like "Every Picture Tells a Story" have such energy and with only acoustic guitars? Mick Waller, that's how. The drums on this record are so distinct and thank Rod for making them so prominent on the album. Ronnie Wood is equally stunning, playing guitars, mandolin and bass. Some of Rod's best singing ever, every song he interprets (of the 5 cover songs) in a way to make his own. Notable cover songs possibly better than the originals, "(I know) I'm Losing You," "That's All Right," "Tomorrow is a Long Time." The rest of the early Rod Stewart albums, sprinkled with some great songs, pale in comparison to this gem. ... Read more

The enduring legacy of John Lennon's best album has overshadowed a glaring historical irony: the Beatles' original architect was also responsible for some of the Fab Four's most erratic solo albums. His recording projects all too often held hostage to polemics both personal and political, Lennon's conflicting artistic sensibilities arguably reached perfect balance just once. Coproduced with an uncharacteristically subtle touch by Phil Spector (a stark contrast to his dense aural constructions for George Harrison's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Imagine there's more Lennon...
Following the now sanctified Fab Four's breakup, Beatlemaniacs awash in misery painfully awaited each forthcoming solo release. Record companies, with their bottom dollar heads, probably counted their blessings surreptitiously. After all, where once there was merely one Beatles album, four would now appear. Which suggested, most importantly, quadruple profits. Though the resultant sales belie any disillusion, many fans and critics lamented that "the magic" had vanished. Lennon apparently meant business when he intoned "The dream is over" in 1970.
3-0 out of 5 stars I'd Still Say It's Worth it Just for the Title Track
Coming out in 1971, the song "Imagine" was just what the world needed, and still needs, to hear. The lyrics reflect some of the thoughts I myself have had about the world, so it is very special for me. With a song like that, it pretty much was guaranteed that I had to buy the album. But the album never played up to the amazing standards of the title track. Here's my rating of the songs:
5-0 out of 5 stars John Lennon's Best Solo Recording
John Lennon peaked with IMAGINE. Although he released several wonderful albums, particularly at the end of his life (see MILK and HONEY), IMAGINE outdoes them all due to its strong song quality and the noticeable and pleasant absence of Yoko Ono tracks. The title track is the main course from this Grade A platter. "Jealous Guy," "Oh Yoko," and "Oh My Love" showcase Lennon's ability to write and record beautiful melodies. "Crippled Inside" is silly, vaudville fun. "Gimme Some Truth" and "I Don't Want to be a Soldier Mama" are the political statements Lennon became known for in the late 60's and early 70's. "How Do You Sleep" is a harsh retaliation to Paul McCartney for his strong kiss-off statements he made following the painful breakup of the Beatles. The best part of IMAGINE is the fact that it's actually a John Lennon-only recording. Lennon's last recordings were released under the artist name John Lennon, but actually included 50% Yoko Ono recordings, which were always way below the artistic standards of Lennon or Ringo Starr. IMAGINE is Lennon at his best because it includes the best of his abilities as a master of melodies, a political activist, an ex-Beatle ready to move on, and it's a release that is truly all his own. IMAGINE is Lennon's ALL THINGS MUST PASS. ... Read more

Meat Loaf and legendary songwriter Jim Steinman collaborated in the 70s to produce the ground-breaking album "Bat Out of Hell", and in 1993 to produce the follow-up "Bat Out of Hell II".In between, several other albums were released, and these more obscure albums still managed to produce some memorable songs.

Heart's classic debut album Dreamboat Annie was released in April of 1976(30 years ago).
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect start for some pretty ladies
Ann and Nancy Wilson stole my heart, so to speak, when I first heard them way back in 1976. Heart's debut is a classic to say the least and it showcases one of the best female groups in rock history. "Magic Man", "Dreamboat Annie" and "Crazy On You" highlight this CD but there are some lesser known tunes that rock with the best of them ("White Lightning & Wine", "(Love Me Like Music)I'll Be Your Song" and "Sing Child"). Heart was the female answer in the '70s to Led Zeppelin and are still rocking to this day, although much mellower now than then.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take a ride with "Annie"
Dreamboat Annie is one of my all time favorite albums. I always think of it as a concept album like Captain Beyond, Wishbone Ash's Argus, and The Eagles Desperado. This is another of the many albums that I've owned on all the different media types available since the 1970's when it debuted. I will always remember listening to it when I would feel homesick for the west coast while living overseas the Pacific Ocean waves crashing in the background that set the theme for this album could take me to my "happy place".

Just as Don Henley's work with the Eagles in the 1970s chronicled a culture that was rapidly spinning out of control, his '80s output cataloged and criticized a decade of greed, cruelty, and prurient interest in the misfortune of others. But this is music, not journalism, and despite the overt seriousness of such songs as "Dirty Laundry," "All She Wants to Do Is Dance," "The Boys of Summer," and especially the somber, elegiac "The End of the Innocence," Henley's field reports were tuneful in the extreme. Henley`s solo collection is not a mixed bag of music. Actual Miles shines quality all over. From the opening track Dirty Laundry, with a very good tabloid critique of the media society, which still holds up today, to the last track. This CD shines. But how can you possible go wrong when you move into The Boys of Summer on Track 2. You can realy feel the summer breeze shivering trough youre soul on this one. An open soundpicture with a somekind of air feel to with it. Uplifting. Track 4 It`s not enough love in this world is also a winner. It`s moody and have enough tempo upbeat to make you a happier human beeing. Andthe lyricks tell youthings to think about too.But the real winner and my old time Henley favourite isTrack 6 The End of the Innocence. The opening with the piano. It`s pure music magic. And when Henley`s voice is put in gear. This is what music should be. It`s like a short movie in a way. Just close your eyes, and listening.Anyway if you new to Henley this one gives you an earopener when it comes to pure gold quality all trough ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cd marvel
I'm not particularly impressed by CD releases of old stuff. But having seen the Who twice at Tanglewood in Lenox Mass about the time of Tommy I can vouch for the feracity of their playing. Heaven and Hell they opened with in one show and I always wondered why it wasn't released. After seeing Entwistle with dual Sunn amps and a Fender bass I was led to buy a 2000S and Precision myself and played for quite a while with this combination. They had it right back then and even though the openers wereBB King, Jefferson Airplane, Jethro Tull in either venue, they remain the greatest live band in my mind. Just watching Keith Moon do a rim shot and blow his stick into the air and catch it on the way down without blowing the song was worth the price of admission for me. This album brings it all back.

5-0 out of 5 stars put that cigarette out...
Better than the original if only because there is more of it. Young Man Blues has to be one of the great rock covers and beats any Jimi you may want to compare it with (in my view). Fortune Teller is less than I expected (having read much about its role in the Who's development but never having heard it) and the version of A Quick One is not as good as the Kids Are Alright/Rock'n'Roll Circus version (the best rock TV performance ever - except for Iggy doing I;m Bored on Countdown in 1978 maybe). It's Meaty Beaty Big Bouncy and FAST. Love it or it'll kill ya.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take That, Bootleggers
Originally released as a means to have an official live album in the catalog, The Who are heard in their sonic splendor mixed with the straight-ahead R&B roots in the Leeds University concert from February 1970.

5-0 out of 5 stars 100% recommended
When I first heard this I thought it was the corniest music I've ever heard. Then I listened to it more and more and grew appreciaton for all the songs. Now I am a huge Queen fan with all of their albums. This is the best Compilation I've ever heard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Queen Newbie
This was my first full length Queen purchase.Back in 1992 I used to pop it into my cassette walkman (remember those?) and listen all night, when I was doing dishes, doing homework, etc.I never tired of it.I am still not tired of it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Queen
I have listened to queen ever since I was a kid. There music is so kinetic and inspiring. Freddie Mercury had a voice that couldn't be beaten. This album is one of my favorites. It contains a great selection of their best stuff, from "Bohemian Rhapsody" to "These are the Days of Our Lives", early and new. I also believe Queen to be highly underated. I rarely hear them on the radio and many people I have talked to can only think of "We will Rock You" when I ask them if they have heard of Queen.

1-0 out of 5 stars No baloobalot here
I was disappointed that the "Open Your Eyes (Baloobalot Hot House Piano Dub)" by Rhythm Scholar was not on this CD.It's really the only Donovan worth listening to.Skip this and get something by Ochwat & Sam or Spanky My Monkey instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too many memories and Nick Drake
The other two reviews are very informative but I disagree with how the reviewer divides his songs into two categories and says some are weaker than others.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this
Great music on this, but sadly all of Donovans best of or compilations are Sony. Buy any of these and you may end up infected with spyware, and many other bad things from the Sony people. ... Read more

Editorial Review

On their 1967 debut album, the Doors more than fulfilled the promise of their infamously challenging gigs around Los Angeles throughout the previous year. Whether belting out a standard like "Back Door Man" or talk-singing such originals as "The Crystal Ship" and "I Looked at You," leather-clad vocalist Jim Morrison exuded both sensuality and menace. The mixture, on the outsize album finale, "The End," helped rewrite the rules on rock song composition. None of this would have worked, though, were it not for the highly visual instrumental work of keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robbie Krieger, and drummer John Densmore, whose work on tracks such as "Take It As It Comes" and the lengthy hit "Light My Fire" virtually defined the rock-blues-jazz-classical amalgam that was acid-rock. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best alblums ever
I started off with the doors at a young age, maybe around 8 or 9 becuase my dad was always playing his "Best of the Doors" cd in his car. Immedietly when i heard their sound, i was entranced by the music i have grown to love even more. I got this cd on a trip one year and it has become one of my favorites, i am even listening to it as i type this review. Here is an overview of the songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Jim Morrison is the man
First of all the idiot who said this is the most overrated album of the 60's is a complete fool. That is the worst review I have ever read.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Doors Debut Masterpiece
The Doors debut record has to arguably be one of the greatest debut records of all time, up there with The Mothers of Invention's `Freak Out' (1966) The Velvet Underground's `Velvet Underground & Nico' (1967) Jimi Hendrix's `Are You Experienced?' (1967) The Clash's `The Clash' (1977) and Black Flag's `Damaged' (1981). The thing it lacks is the influential stature of some of the above albums but it had the chart success.
