Unplugged: From "Friday Night" to Layla
The reviewer who noted that Clapton's songs are made fresher by being unplugged is right on! For me Clapton is one of founding fathers of electric guitar. His work in Cream is the subconscious. Here he is kinder and gentler, more subtle and, like a good wine, better than ever. I especially think this applies to the Johnson material (Malted Milk, Walkin' Blues). Let me note that the GODFATHER OF ALL UNPLUGGED events, ground zero for the whole phenomenon is also a guitar album, the best live one EVER recorded: FRIDAY NIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO (Di Meola, McLaughlin, De Lucia). classic eric clapton
Many people have heard of Eric Clapton's music. Some people love him and some people don't. I believe that this CD show's his true skill in music (Eric Clapton Unplugged). Eric Clapton displays his true dominance of the modern blues genre. I believe that Clapton is the best modern day blues musician because of his master of tone.

Ummagumma was released in the autumn of '69 and reached #5 on the UK charts, it also broke the top 100 in the States, at #74.
Easily Floyd's Worst Offering!
This 2 disc set is easily Pink Floyd's worst offering of their expansive collection.It is odd because Waters and Co. would have you believe A Saucerful of Secrets and Atom Heart Mother were far more "Rubbish".However this helping really isn't an album it is merely a disc of 4 live recordings of older singles and then a second disc of experimentation.

Hendrix travels the Blues Road less taken .
And it has made all the difference.This is a great album indeed.Jimi was moving on and into a new soulful blues path.He did the flower-power gigs,because he enjoyed it and he could sell it.He was just in the process of rediscovering the blues,that had influenced so many rock artists,without them even knowing it. His musical magick lives on.

Hendrix - Band Of Gypsys
That - the title of this review - is what it said on the spine and green Capitol label of the very first copy (and first Henrix album) I ever bought, which was originally released in April 1970 - eighteen long months after the Jimi Hendrix Experience's third and final studio album, "Electric Ladyland." The group was already fracturing by then, though the soldiered on in the studio and on tour through a final US date June 30, 1969, after which a frustrated Noel Redding split for England and Fat Mattress (Reprise collected eight of the group's best known tracks, added four unreleased in the US, and a "giant poster" for "Smash Hits" that July). Many factors and motivations - financial, political, cultural, personal, musical - likely led to the short lived Band Of Gypsys. Jimi had already produced a Buddy Miles solo album and worked with the drummer (noteably on part of "Ladyland"). Billy Cox was an old Army buddy, fine bassist, with no ambitions to write songs - he patiently worked with Hendrix for over a year during 1969 - 70 as the guitarist developed new songs and opened his dream studio, almost until the end (Cox split after being dosed with PCP at one of Hendrix's final Euro dates). And, perhaps symbolically if not intentionally, BOG was an all black band.

This is Absolute genius , the violence inflicted on his strat is mindblowing ,this album was slated when it first came out by reviewers.It is one of the best live albums of all time ,pity no decent video footage exists.If you're a guitarist buy this album , you ll love it ,and if you don't you ll take ideas from the myriad of licks in the music . Way back in the dark ages of 1976, when I was significantly younger, this album was played everywhere.The album went to number one on the charts and became the biggest selling live album of all time up to that time.The album was eventually certified 6 times platinum.

Review no.77.Talk about your '70's arena rock staple.It's been said before,but I sort of believe that it's true:"If you lived in the suburbs,you were issued a copy of this album".I know I had an lp copy as well as an 8-track and a cassette copy of this gem at one time.First put out in 1976,I clearly recall tunes off this album being played SO much on FM radio,you ended up with several of them 'etched' in the back of your brain.'Frampton Comes Alive' STILL holds the harsh test of time.Total of fourteen tracks with a duration of 78:06.One of the longest CD reissues I've ever encountered. It's all good, from the guitar noodling of "Doobie Wah", "Show Me The Way", his all-time greatest ballad "Baby,I Love Your Way",the foot-stomper "(I'll Give You)Money", his Stone's cover "Jumping Jack Flash" and the album finale, the 14-minute historic (in it's own right)"Do You Feel Like I Do". You know, I believe this was playing when I partied for the very first time. An absolute must-have. Great slice of '70's rock,no doubt.

Pink Floyd On Tour....One Last Time
The only time I ever got to see Pink Floyd live in concert was on their last tour for "The Division Bell" album back in 1994. Although a lot of that Floyd concert I saw is now only a big blur in my mind, I do remember the sheer spectacle of it all---the lasers, the lighting, the trippy-looking animations & films on the circular screen behind the band, the quadrophonic sound, and those great big inflatable pigs during "One Of These Days"! I also remember how great the band sounded in concert, and this live album from 1995, "Pulse," documents the Floyd on their "Division Bell" tour in all of it's sonic glory. I think it's a better live album than "The Delicate Sound Of Thunder," too. There's a better selection of songs, and the band themselves sound better on this one, their performances very tight and clean throughout. And Gilmour's voice has also improved immensely since "Delicate Sound Of Thunder," where he *growled* the words too damn much instead of singing them (Gilmour was also a lot heavier on that previous tour---the weight loss definitely did him good in more ways than one!). And, of course, there's the complete live performance of "Dark Side Of The Moon," which is marvelously done. Not only that, but "Pulse" also boasts incredible packaging. I LOVE the beautiful accompanying tour book and cover artwork! It's really well done. The only thing missing from Pink Floyd's "Pulse" is Roger Waters, although Guy Pratt does a good job filling in for Waters on bass (and his co-lead vocal with Gilmour on "Run Like Hell" is also a big improvement from his previous try on "Delicate Sound Of Thunder," which sounded too ragged. This time around, Pratt gets it right). While I'm disappointed that David Gilmour, reportedly, cannot be swayed into touring and recording with Pink Floyd anymore---he says it wouldn't make him "a happier person" to do Pink Floyd again---I am happy that at least the Floyd went out with a great album and tour. "The Division Bell" is an excellent album, and "Pulse" is an equally-excellent live document from the tour. If you gotta go out, go out on top, and Pink Floyd definitely did just that. Long live the mighty Pink Floyd!

Pulse live cd.
I have listened to this cd several times since purchase and I am very pleased with it.I didn't really care for track 1,too much pre-concert noise.I realize it is a live concert but at home it just gets in the way of the enjoyment.The cd itself was in perfect condition and it arrived in good time,thanks.

I just got the CD delivered this morning.I am listening to it right now and I am totally impressed.I originally bought it for the #2 cut "Tryin' to Live My Life Without You" thinking the rest of it will be just OK.WRONG.I can't get over how great the whole CD turned out to be.It comes highly recommended by this listener. Tonight's Still Right for NINE TONIGHT
I've seen Bob Seger in concert several times in the 1980s and I was always blown away by how close the band sounded to their studio albums.The first time I saw them (at the Toledo Speedway Jam in '83), I was sure they were lipsynching for the first couple of songs (they started with "Even Now" from his latest at the time, THE DISTANCE).

A Cd marvel
I'm not particularly impressed by CD releases of old stuff. But having seen the Who twice at Tanglewood in Lenox Mass about the time of Tommy I can vouch for the feracity of their playing. Heaven and Hell they opened with in one show and I always wondered why it wasn't released. After seeing Entwistle with dual Sunn amps and a Fender bass I was led to buy a 2000S and Precision myself and played for quite a while with this combination. They had it right back then and even though the openers wereBB King, Jefferson Airplane, Jethro Tull in either venue,they remain the greatest live band in my mind. Just watching Keith Moon do a rim shot and blow his stick into the air and catch it on the way down without blowing the song was worth the price of admission for me. This album brings it all back.

Better than the original if only because there is more of it. Young Man Blues has to be one of the great rock covers and beats any Jimi you may want to compare it with (in my view). Fortune Teller is less than I expected (having read much about its role in the Who's development but never having heard it) and the version of A Quick One is not as good as the Kids Are Alright/Rock'n'Roll Circus version (the best rock TV performance ever - except for Iggy doing I;m Bored on Countdown in 1978 maybe). It's Meaty Beaty Big Bouncy and FAST. Love it or it'll kill ya.

This is one of those albums where you'll want to cherry-pick favorites. Recorded live when the supergroup was at its commercial zenith, it's sloppy in spots where precision is called for. And the hyperbolic counterculture rants sound a bit silly these days (Bellows Stills: "Jesus Christ was the first nonviolent revolutionary! Ah, dig it, dig it!"). On the other hand, the electric jams are enlivened by some charged guitar skirmishes between Stills and Young. Those who owned the original 2-record set will be pleased by the additional Graham Nash song ("King Midas in Reverse") and Young's acoustic "The Loner"/"Cinnamon Girl"/"Down by the River" medley.Read more

Great live album of CSN & Y
I grew up in the 60s and was into CSN & Y even before they formed their super group. (Hollies, Byrds, and Buffalo Springfield). This album covers some of their tunes from the original CSN (1969) and Deja Vu (1970) plus some of their solo work such as a great version of Young's "Southern Man." That tune plus "Wooden Ships" are my favorites if I had to choose and tough choice it would be. I have many live rock albums and have always ranked this one at the top. Too bad these guys put out so little stuff from 1969 to American Dream in 1988.

Underappreciated Live Album
Sure this album sounds dated. Sure we can look back on it and laugh at how funny some Stephen Still's improvisations are at the end of 49 Bye-Byes/America's Children are. Sure Suite: Judy Blue Eyes is 33 seconds long. Sure this is an amazing live album. I wasn't around back in '71 and never got a chance to see these guys live, so this is as close as it gets for me. This has to be one of my all time favorite live albums. It is one of those albums that you can put on for background music and find yourself doing nothing but sitting and listening. Every time I listen, I can hear something new in either the songs or the chatter between tracks. Chicago and 49 Bye-Byes/America's Children are full of emotion and rank as two of my favorite tracks on the album. And I don't even have the CD; just the open reel tape.

Do Not Buy For "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes"
I mean, who doesn't already have that song anyway?That track's kind of a ripoff, and there is not nearly enough of Stills being heard, but "Black Queen" almost makes up for it.I may be a little biased, because I don't find many things much finer than a live Neil Young letting it all out.All in all, this is a pretty good album if you enjoy the live sound (which is certainly lacking in most of today's music).If you're looking more for a refined, produced sound like you hear on the radio, stick with one of their great studio albums. ... How The West Was Won is the rare live album that will have you preferring the live versions of the songs to the studio versions.The entire first disc is a tour de force and an all-out assault on your auditory senses.All of the cuts are first rate, but the highlight would have be the version of Black Dogincluded here.Leading off with the Out on the Tiles intro in lieu of the amplifier effect present on IV, Plant's powerful vocal along with Page's relentless guitar riffing will leave you breathless.

Pure Rock and Roll Passion
Let me start by stating that this is one of the finest Live albums I have ever heard, comparable to the Allman Brothers Band At Fillmore East.It's stunning to me that it was lost and never released.To this day Bruce and the E-Street Band remain tight professionals who can carry an arena or stadium as few can.But this, this is simply stunning.The raw passion and intensity behind both Springsteen's vocals and the band's jazz like jamming is just something I have never heard out of Sprinsteen.There are moments on this album that simply bring a smile to your face as yousay to yourself can they have been this good.Some moments like the remarkably intense "Lost in the Flood" or the unreal Spirit in the Night make you want to start clapping as you are listening to it.Like the Allman Brothers and certain other bands, the E-Street Band in 1975 makes you understand how ridiculous all the bombast or tongue wagging or faux metal licks really are.It's about the groove, the passion and the soul.Ironically, while Born to Run is by far Sprinsteen's greatest album, I find the best performances on this album are the earlier songs, the jazzy Kitty's Back, the funky "Hard to be a Saint in the City", the simply relentless Rosalita.But there is not one bad track on this album.If you don't like this concert, you simply do not like rock music.

Wow!A Two-Hour Rock-n-Roll Explosion!
My only complaints are that songs I would have preferred to hear up-tempo (Kitty's Back and For You) are slowed down.But this collection is a live, greatest hits of the first three Bruce records ... the musicianship is second to none (they were as tight as Zappa's Helsinki concert on YCDTOSA V. 2), with amazing bass work and superb keyboards.I don't remember hearing Weinberg sound so powerful, nor Clarence Clemons so passionate or alive.All I have to say, is if this record were released after the concert, it would have beat Frampton Comes Alive as the top selling double album of all time, and possibly the best live record ever.It's that good. ... How ironic!!!
I had a scathing review of the "Woodstock" film posted for about a month.Now, it's mysteriously gone.Whatever happened to "freedom"?Whatever happened to "free your mind, man"?In a way, the censorship of my ideas is a huge compliment.Sixties-era hypocrisy was never hard to prove, but now it's a slam dunk.Was it a movie and a concert?Yes.Was it "revolutionary" and a tool of "change"?I think not.Thirty-seven years later, Woodstock is nothing but a fine example of youth wasted on the young.There is no amount of censorship that will hide that truth!!!

Wish EVERYONE could have been there!
Was lucky to have been in a group of 8 people who ended up at Woodstock pretty much by accident- no, really. Two of our friends had heard about the concert, and "dared" us to be carried along on this mysterious adventure. We got there before the fences were all up, the guys helped to construct the stage and towers, resulting in our free admission and right to squat within 100 feet of the stage for the 6 days we were there!

best dylan recording ever
When Robert Zimmerman(Bob Dylan) started, he was a Woodie Guthrie clone. Many of the old Woodie Guthrie type folkies felt that the torch had been passed to a new generation. Many other young people,like myself,prefered Dylan songs done by popular rock groups of the time because Dylan's words were awsome, but the sound wasn't as good as rock music.
Dylan + the Band = Brilliance
A strong live set from Zimmy and his ex-backup group, the Band. The energy here is everywhere, and though not as much as on Hard Rain, Before the Flood is my favorite Dylan live album out of the three I own, by a mile.
A Rocking Good Time
This is the second record that Mr. D recorded for David Geffin's Asylum label before he went back to Colombia, (both this record and "Planet Waves" are now with CBS/Sony where all Dylan's stuff is now) and it's a rocking good time of a record. Dylan's voice is right up front and central, the Band's playing is strong. And Dylan performs a very, very angry, version of "It's Alright Ma," where the audience goes nuts when he shouts out, "Even the President of the United States sometimes must have to stand naked." You have to remember that this record came out during the Watergate scandal, seems Mr. Nixon wasn't to popular with the Dylan crowd. Five stars for this one.

An interesting live album despite the overdubs
This is a great live album dispite that it doesn't really represent the period right. Spring tour 1971 featured alot of Pigpen tunes in the setlists but only one appears here. Due to Pigpen's illness, most of his parts are erased and overdubbed by Mere Saunders. Vocal overdubs were also added. On all of the lp copies you hear Phil singing backing vocals on Bertha. For whatever reason, on all the new remixed, remastered and newly released albums for this period this also happens. Buy this disc with Ladies and Gentlemen and get a good dose of the Dead from spring'71. Not Fade Away/Goin' Down The Road is one of the all time best.

A Mixed Bag, with Moments of Greatness
For their second `official' live album, the Grateful Dead switched gears a bit from their previous endeavor. While "Live/Dead" accentuated the jamming aspect of the band, spreading five songs over four sides (the three tracks on side four really constitute one performance), this collection goes for a breezier feel. Here, eleven tracks fill out four sides, allowing room for only one meandering jam ("The Other One"), which does little to add to the legacy already created by "Live/Dead". When performing their own original material, this album succeeds completely on its own terms. "Bertha" is one of the chirpiest jam tunes the Dead ever came up with - enough to inspire Los Lobos to do a faithful cover version - while "Playing in the Band" gives Bob Weir the opportunity to indulge in some rock and roll. It's only when the band attempts to incorporate songs previously made famous by others that the album veers out of bounds. "Me and Bobby McGee" is a pointless endeavor, especially in light of Janis Joplin's definitive version, while there really aren't too many people who would consider a Grateful Dead version of "Johnny B. Goode" to be essential listening.
....THAT OLD COUNTRY FEELING.
