4-0 out of 5 stars Memories of a great gig
This is a strange assortment of the artists that were on the Stiff records label in 1977.I saw this tour and the CD brings it all back. There are a number of highlights - I like Wreckless in particular - but the outstandingtrack is Elvis Costello singing I Don't Know what to do With myself.Ifyou remember the late seventies you must buy this. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Peek at Late 60s England
I bought this album for the two Pink Floyd tracks ("Interstellar Overdrive" and "Nick's Boogie"), but find that I more often listen to the fascinating, but now generally forgotten, bands which make up the other tracks.Names like Vashti and Chris Farlowe may not ring many bells now, but they were obviously in touch with the times, as they seem toperfectly capture the underground youth culture of England in the late 60s.The music is interspersed with interviews of people from Mick Jagger to Michael Caine, which act as introductions to the music, as they cover issues ranging from youth violence to the loss of the BritishEmpire.3-0 out of 5 stars Very good album, but more of a collectable.
This album is very entertaining to listen to, ifyou have something else you're doing. Unless you are getting high and want some music to accompany you, this isn't the best album to concentrate on. If you are listening tothis album, I suggest you have something else to do. Treat it as backgroundmusic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Calling all you old Hippies out there!! A Keeper!!!
What an unexpected treat! Not only does this disc feature the original 11:02 version of Time Has Come Today (the only one worth listening to IMHO) but it also contains the full 6:42 version of Hocus Pocus. The sound quality of this disc is excellent, too! ALL THIS FROM K-TEL???!!! We all remember K-Tel as being one of the dreary marketers of schlock 8-Tracks on late night and Sunday afternoon TV! Dreadful songs on an 8-Track tape guaranteed jam even the best Ampex machines. Not so here. A quality release. I just wish they would have included some text about each song. All you Hippie Chicks, get your peasant dresses down from the closet! Dudes, grab your fringed buckskin coats! Let's groove, man.......

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor substitute
These songs are about what one would expect for knock-offs of ABBA tunes by no-name bands. The music sounds thin and campy. The bands have for the most part tried to remain true to the original arrangements, but that justadds to the disappointment -- there is little new or exciting here, just(mostly) poorly done remakes.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific compilation of 60s Texas psychedelia and more
A superb collection, originally issued as a 2-LP set, that collects rarities from the vaults of Texas' International Artists label. In addition to previously unreleased and demo sides from Texas psychedlia stalwarts such as Red Krayola and 13th Floor Elevators (including incredible pre-Elevators tracks from Roky Erikson and the Spades), there are many fine cuts by obscure garage punk acts such as The Chapparrals, and a terrific cover of the Bee Gees "In My Own Time" by Patterns. The Red Krayola demos (many of which would be re-recorded for their debut) are a treat.Side 3 (on the original vinyl) is perhaps the only downer, as the blues tracks from Big Walter, Lightnin' Hopkins and Dave Allen aren't particularly exceptional. The radio commercial for the Elevators' "Bull of the Woods" is a hoot, as is Roky's spaced out late-70s interview on San Francisco's KSAN-FM. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Enticing Blast from the Past
If you like Rory Gallagher and Greenslade, you'll be drawn to this CD, but beware. The CD is basically transferred from the LP, so one only gets 47 minutes of music from eight artists - no one gets much coverage.Rory's is"Hands Off," clocking in at 8 minutes, and is quite good. Greenslade's track is "Feathered Friends" and is reallyinteresting, but seems to have something clipped off at the end, running to5 minutes. The other find on the album is two tracks by Tim Hardin, whom Iknow nothing about.Otherwise, the rest is throwaway, with the possibleexception of the last Faces concert, represented here by a 7 minute versionof "Losing You" - a great tune, though Rod's voice seemsstrained.Caveat emptor overall - with all the remastered Rory coming out, this disc is an expensive addition for the completist fan.Does anyoneknow if the full performances from Reading '73 are available?PS: theliner notes are extensive and quite interesting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Deep music.......
All I can say is wow! What a great album! From its beginning to the very end, The Deep takes you on a trip, as the Amboy Dukes say, "to the center of your mind." Psychedelic Moods opens with "ColorDreams," a song describing all shades and tones of the rainbow, amix-n-match if you will, of colors we could only dream of. A rather jazzy, rock 'n' roll song, very upbeat if I may say so.As usual it sounds betterthan the stuff they call "rock" they play on the radio today. Thesong "Pink Ether" is as unrevealing and oxymoronic as a songcould possibly be. The song makes you feel like you're floating on, well, ether (and pink, even). It's one of those songs I wish I knew every wordto, but certain parts of the song are difficult to comprehend.Onequestion, guys:If ether can't be seen, how do you know it's pink? :)"When Rain Is Black" is a very pensive, soft-sounding song thatalso uses colors to explore the idea of death and its contrast to the harshreality of the physical world. "It's All A Part Of Me" expressesthe interconnectedness between the world and himself, saying, for example,"the ground is but the sea, the sea is but a tree, and the tree is butme."This album has an excellent selection of good, hard rock songs,my favorites among those not yet mentioned are "Turned On," whichis a great blues tune, and "Your Choice To Choose," which tellsyou to let your mind take you where it pleases. Some of the more gentlersongs with an excellent beat are "Crystal Nite," "Wake Upand Find Me" and "Shadows on the Wall," all of which areeasy to listen to, if you're not in the mood to really rock out. They are, however, almost as psychedelic....."On Off-Off On" is an upbeatsong...it almost doesn't seem to fit in with the other songs on the album, but it does make a good pop song. And certainly not least,"Psychedelic Moon" is a love song that uses colors and othersensory descriptions ("funny-colored ribbons" and"weary-lighted prisms") to draw you into the song. At first Ithought the song needed tuning, then I realized, it's supposed to soundthat way....I especially like the way they sing off-key slightly, to makeyou think twice about what you're hearing. And before I forget (as if),there's "Trip #76," and I'm beginning to think that was thenumber they were on when they did this song. Of all of the songs on thisalbum, this would have to be the best, due to its rhythmic lead guitar andhow it invites you into the musical experience, with the intention ofkeeping you there. It literally takes you on a ride, much the way"Your Choice to Choose" does, but this song is WAY morepsychedelic. Although most of the song is music, he does pause a few timesto examine his own philosophy on life and "reality." This albumalso gives you the opportunity to hear the original takes on two of thetracks, "Your Choice to Choose" and "Psychedelic Moon."All in all, it's a very good rock album produced by a very creative band ofthe Psychedelic Era. ...
