4-0 out of 5 stars How can you not have an album with "Let's Live For Today"?
"Let's Live for Today" (Sha Na Na Na Na Na) by the Grass Roots is without doubt one of my favorite songs from the Sixties. It is one of the few songs I still hang around the radio at the office to listen to when it comes on. If you do not have it in your music collection, then Volume 1 of the Vintages Collectibles series is one way of picking it up.The only question is whether you can meet the standard litmus test and find four other tracks on this album to really justify the purchase. The problem might be that you already have "Magic Carpet Ride," "California Dreamin'" and "Eli's Coming" (ah, but with the piano bit at the end?).This particular album has a rather wide focus, going form "Sealed With a Kiss" to "Dizzy."The Vintage Collectibles albums are a mix of big hits and songs you probably do not remember, so they are going to be a hit and miss proposition across the board. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good songs, but....
This is one of your classic hodgepodge albums.Trot out a recognizable '60s phrase like "Flower Power," put day-glo Summer of Love cover art on it, and call it "psychedelic."5-0 out of 5 stars BLAST FROM THE PAST
FOR 8 BUCKS OWN SOME GOOD CLASSIC PSYCHEDALIC TUNES WHAT A STEAL THIS WAS A GREAT DISCOVERY.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Song List
This is definitely one of the coolest song lists I've seen of all the various pop hits of the 60's CD's (and there's alot). If you're a collector, chances are you own most of these songs already, but how couldyou beat such a line up? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate trip
more than a nostalgia trip. more like opening an old suitcase and finding bars of gold. a real treasure if you remember san fran in the good old days or just want to recapture the vibes. and DJ tom donahue is a nice addition to the tracks. i cannot stop playing this CD. i had forgotten the great songs by the youngbloods, byrds and donovan. but besides those gems you get the 11 minute version of Time by the Chambers Brothers. Tune in, turn on, drop out. The Brothers are psychedelisized. Wow. Buy this CD and I guarantee you will be groovin' down Haight Street or in your mind. Peace and love.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now the time has come
I never got to hear Tom Donahue, since I was only a baby at the time, and was on the opposite side of the country anyway.Based on the aural evidence presented on this CD, he seems to have been a pretty cool guy. This is not one of his actual shows, but rather "airchecks" from some of his broadcasts, with songs he might have played inserted. Some of the songs are actually introduced by name, but obviously they were limted as to what songs they were able to license. The CD opens with Tom mentioning that one of the songs he had just played was "Come Together" by the Beatles, but of course they weren't able to license that song. One of my favorite parts is when Tom says "Here's the Youngbloods 'Darkness, Darkness', and I'm looking forward to the day I can hear this in stereo, cause it must be unreal."Then the song procedes to play, and it actually is in stereo. This CD is a fascinating time capsule, and if you are a fan of underground radio from the late '60s - early '70s, or just curious to find out about it, you should find this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right on Man!!
This cd is way too cool. Excellent choice of music and the remastering is very well done. This cd would be a huge hit for anyone wanting to relive the time and tunes, to the curious, and to those that love classic and psychedilic rock. A must have. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as VOL. 1, but still has plenty of rockin' tunes
The follow-up to PEBBLES VOL. 8: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA isn't as jam-packed with classic garage soul-smashers as its predecessor, but still has several good songs I'm glad have been released somewhere! Highlights you'll find yourself loving: Ty Wagner's "I'm a No Count", The Caretakers' "East Side Story", The Standells' "Someday You'll Cry", The Magic Mushrooms' "I'm Gone" (yeah, believe it or not, they recorded something else after "It's A-Happening"!), Fenwyck's "IYE", The The Good Feelins' "Shattered", The Gypsy Trips' "Ain't It Hard" (the Electric Prunes' version is better, though), The Nervous Breakdowns' "I Dig Your Mind", The W.C. Fields' Memorial Electric String Band's "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone" (better than The Monkees' more popular version!), The Velvet Illusions' "Velvet Illusions", Children of the Mushrooms' "August Mademoiselle", The Crumpets' "Mama Baby" (which sounds uncannily like The Chocolate Watchband's "Sweet Young Thing"), The Sounds Unreal's "Scene of the Crime", and The Starfires' "Cry for Freedom" (taken from the only surviving acetate!).4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Garage Rawk!!!!!
I think this was the first Pebbles volume I found (on vinyl)at a record show. It's still my favorite; I also own #'s 1,3,8 & 13.Great tunes especially "I'm Not Trying To Hurt You","Pretty Girl","Show Me The Way" (no not Frampton!!!), and "The Girl I Threw Away". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stepping Stone
In 1966 I was 14 & had been reading about all these great bands. I wanted to hear their music but was afraid to spend my limited resources on 1/2 dozen albums. This album was a godsend. It had the songs by Paul Butterfield & others along side of songs by the Lovin' Spoonfull who I was already a fan of so I knew I'd at least like their songs. Funny thing is their's were my least favorite songs on the album. As soon as I played the album I was blown away and ran right back down to the record store to buy full length Paul Butterfield & Tom Rush albums with a whole months worth of my school lunch money. I may have had an empty stomach but my mind was on fire! It was the end of top 40 music for me. At least until groups like the Doors & Big Brother had hits.

5-0 out of 5 stars an alltime great album
A great album any BLUES fan must have. Al Kooper's "I Can't Keep From Cryin' " is listed as a Paul Butterfield song in the Amazon breakdown of cuts. That particular cut, w/Al on Paino is one of my alltime favorites. The rest of the album is superb also! A great compilation.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Important Historical Timepiece
"What's Shakin" is a mid-'60s blues-rock sampler, featuring rare tracks from several great bands - most prominent being Paul Butterfield and the Lovin' Spoonful. However, what makes this collection truly historic are the tracks by Eric Clapton & the Powerhouse, which included the young Stevie Winwood. This marked Clapton's first recorded collaboration with Winwood, and their only recorded collaboration outside of Blind Faith and Clapton's "Rainbow Concert" album.History was never this much fun. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Pop Psychadelic Rock CD
If you're looking for a great roundup of pop psychadelic tracks, this is a great CD. Most of these are all fun tracks that really take you back to another era (I'm just guessing here since I'm too young to have heard them on the radio ;-)
4-0 out of 5 stars FREAKBEAT! UK 60'S AT T GLANCE
What must be said first is that this is a nice glimpse of UK pop music scene 66-69-sometimes called Freakbeat. The Brits had a lot more going on musically than what we heard here in the States during the British Invasion. 2-0 out of 5 stars Be carefull with this one!
If you're out there searching for some great psychedelic 60's music and you've already picked up the Nuggets first two volumes and you're craving more, I recommend getting the Pebbles compilations or for one offs you can't beat the Arf Arf labels compilations of ultra rare and ultra obscure tunes--Paisley Pop is a compilation meant for those who were more into the "Turtles"type of pop music with a few psych embellishments-It has a few strong selections but not enough to justify putting it at the top of your list when there are so many better comps out there---you might even find (as I did) that some of the better tunes on Paisley Pop are on other comps (such as "I Wish I Was Five" by Scrugg and "Black Veils Of Melancholy" by Status Quo).To sum it up, if you're into albums like "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" and "S.F. Sorrow", this compilation isn't for you-- ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars BEWARE!
this is THE WORST tribute cd i've ever heard.oh man! this is AWFUL! it's unbelievable that after these songs were turned in, some clueless fool ACTUALLY put this abomination out! it's all CRAP! even the television personalities and teenage fanclub turned in 3rd rate throw away muck!the other bands? - who cares! all SUPER LAMEindie rock nobody morons. absolutely horrible. i wonder if ANY of these bands have actually listened to a LOVE album. this cd should not exist.do not buy this cd! stick with the first 6 LOVE albums: "love", "da capo", "forever changes", "four sail", "out here", and "false start".

5-0 out of 5 stars Good companion piece.
I am a huge fan of Love originals, and I think you should buy _both_ this tribute album and the originals. They stand separately. Fans of the many popular artists on this tribute will enjoy the compilation, and Love fans can enjoy this as well. Remember that Love is also known for their cover of Burt Bacharach's "My Little Red Book" which caused quite a stir when it drastically changed the original.5-0 out of 5 stars One of the first tribute albums...
This tribute translates psychedelia to grunge.I LOVE this tribute.First of all it was one of the first of the glut of tributes. It seems that the bands all really were influenced by the band LOVE.Arthur Lee himself is really into this tribute and it's obvious that it wasn't done to take advantage of Lee's popularity. There's a refreshing niavity to it, I'm not sure they knew what they were doing or how impactful the medium of 'tribute album' could be.I love Love and while the originals are great, there's something to a group of inexperienced but passionate musicians forging ahead by paying homage to their roots.Enjoy... ... all of the selections are great, even maggie may and i'm not a rod stewart fan. the extended version of "free bird" on this cassette is not to be believed. it's not the extended "live version" which i have on cd and which cannot compare to the version on this cassette. i wish someone could tell me on what cd of lynryd skynyrd this extended version appears.i imagine the cd of this compilation is worthwhile since it includes the great steppenwolf.to get thismuch geat music in a cassette at this price is wonderful. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Ha podido ser mejor

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
Quite disappointed with this album.Although the artists are all top notch, the renditions are poor at best.Aretha's should have been a gospel flavor, not the disco beat used.By listend to many of the tracks, I would guess that they were recorded in the late seventies.

4-0 out of 5 stars "power in a Jagger-Richards song"
There is simply a unique and quite recognizable power in a Jagger-Richards song that can't be denied. This compilation is a tribute to this pair's songwriting genius, fourteen songs appear on this album, with some of themost talented artists perforing their work.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars cali62
I first picked this recording up on cassette about ten years ago because I liked Patti Smith's Because The Night and the name Johnny Cash. At first I felt cheated not hearing Springsteen sounds. But after listening to it again and then again I began to love this tape. When I looked for it on CD no one had it. Finally, a cut out bin... can you believe it? I wore out the tape and I'm wearing out the CD.Buy this CD and you'll love it too.Listen to the excellent sounds of Gary Bonds on Club Soul City as well as Southside Johnny on Talk to Me and Love on the Wrong Side of Town.I don't like Fever as much as the other reviewers, but just listen to the Hollies and the Beat Farmers.Dave Edmunds does an excellent retro thing on From Small Things. 4-0 out of 5 stars An Affirmation of Springsteen As Songwriter
Cover Me is an album you'll enjoy hearing time and again.Conventional wisdom may have it that it takes Springsteen to sing a Springsteen song.Actually, I believe what it takes is someone with the authenticity of Springsteen, admittedly a rare find in the entertainment or any other industry today.Just because Springsteen is a great songwriter, his lyrics may be singable in a meaningful way only by those who share the genuineness of The Boss, or at least, by those who can enter into the spirit of a given set of lyrics authentically. This album is a pleasure to the ear and does not disappoint. If you appreciate these characteristics of Springsteen's music, I think you'll also enjoy these musical performances for years to come.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Deserving Compilation of Springsteen Interpretations
My introduction to the world of Bruce Springsteen wasn't the Boss himself, but by way of the Hollies' `4th of July Asbury Park (Sandy).' The fullyorchestrated rendition with soaring multi-part vocal harmonies is quitemajestic. Springsteen's music and poetry are strong enough to lendthemselves well to interpretation by other artists. In fact, Patti Smith's`Because The Night' is the definitive version, and a worthy introduction tothe High Priestess of Rock. Dave Edmunds turns `From Small Things (BigThings One Day Come)' into a raunchy pup rocker.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The glass might be half full and not half emptywith this one
Of the two volumes in the "Rockin' 70's" series I have checked out to date Volume 1 is the better of the pair. You will find a lot of the same artists on both volumes, with Three Dog Night ("Joy to the World"), Lynyrd Skynyrd ("Sweet Home Alabama"), and the Four Tops ("Ain't No Woman (Like the One I've Got)").But the edge goes to this one because it has more hits from the Seventies that you might want to add to your music collection such as Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way," Brian Hyland's "Gypsy Woman," and Dobie Gray's "Drift Away."With songs by Jerry Jeff Walker, Stephen Bishop, and Poco the album is geared more towards the decade and less towards holdovers from the Sixties (i.e., the Grass Roots). Once you get past Three Dog Night and Lynyrd Skynner you could well find the requisite five tracks, especially if you graduated high school in the last half of the decade.
