Editorial Review

There are a couple of Santana best-of compilations out there, and even a few mastersound gold-plated CDs, but this collection is as good a place as any for a newcomer to explore. It contains the band's three essential charters--"Black Magic Woman," "Evil Ways," and "Oye Como Va"--along with some lesser hits. Santana broke barriers, making ethnic-influenced music palatable to the mainstream, but this set doesn't sound like a history lesson. Few bands have ever made better music for driving on a hot summer day, and this CD is ideal for blasting out the windows of your car on a crowded thoroughfare.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Santana
This is a weird CD.For tracks 1-7, it is nearly perfect. Then, abruptly, tracks 8-12 suck big time -- very 80's and disco-ish.Then at track 13 it gets great again for the remainder of the CD.It's like a "Best of Van Halen" that randomly throws a block of Sammy Hagar tracks in the middle of a bunch of classic David Lee Roth material.Did Santana suck for a while and then get good again?Or is this CD just non-chronological?Whatever, it's a good CD, and it certainly has enough good songs to justify the price. You might want to burn it and cut out tracks 8-12.

5-0 out of 5 stars Santana lover
I am deeply moved by the intricate sounds and the attention to detail that Santana displays in his music. His guitar obeys the story that Santana so delicately tells...you can sit back and feel his emotions and obtain a clear understanding of the messages of life, love, and more in the perspective of the seductive latin culture...by Santana. I'm amazed by this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cross-Section of Santana's Music for the Beginning Fan
All "greatest hits" and "best of" collections are inherently flawed.Almost universally, such collections leave out a favorite song or include songs that make some fans wonder how "best" or "great" was decided.Lastly, these collections are snapshots in time and will thus neglect later songs.Considering these issues, this collection is an excellent representation of Carlos Santana's career until 1998.

5-0 out of 5 stars not my favorite...but its still good!
I always underrated this album because it wasnt very "silver-bullet" like. Probably because this is before the silver bullet band! Here are the tracks from the album and each one is better than what people say.
4-0 out of 5 stars On the verge of greatness.
This was the last album for Bob Seger, before he hit it big. At this point in his career, Seger was devloping his skills as a songwriter. There are some great songs on this album, but some weak moments as well. Lines like "I used to go out evenings, I used to stay out late some evenings" (Momma) show a that a bit of work was needed before Seger could reach the top of his game. On the other hand there are lines like "He wants his home and security, he wants to live like a sailor at sea" (Beautiful Loser) which are great. There are some good rock tracks on the album such as Katmandu and a cover of Nutbush City Limits. These along with the title track, and Travelin' Man, are the best songs on the album.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Music for A Great Price!
I saw this the other day in Wal*Mart for only $5.00! Since I am a Bob Seger fan, heck, I bought it! I am in the process of collecting of albums released by him. Besides that, if you are a true classic rock fan, go get this cd. I think you can spare $5.00, right? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Forrest Gump The Soundtrack
This is an excellent anthology of the music of the "Baby-Boom" generation, from childhood to early adulthood. It is definitely the soundtrackof our lives and it evokes many happy memories. Love this music.

4-0 out of 5 stars A sweet nostalgic journey
I love this collection of songs by the most representative, soulful artists of their respective eras. It isn't sappy or morose. Like the movie, it takes you in and holds you gently for just long enough before returning you to the reality of today.

Editorial Review

One of the best entries from Elton John and Bernie Taupin's remarkably successful mid-'70s run, this album still holds up well over a quarter of a century after its release. Even casual fans will recognize "Daniel," "Elderberry Wine," and "Crocodile Rock," but "Teacher I Need You," "Have Mercy on the Criminal" and "I'm Going to Be a Teenage Idol" are equally good. Elton's backing band at the time (guitarist Davey Johnstone, bassist Dee Murray, and drummer Nigel Olsson) was easily his best, and producer Gus Dudgeon and orchestral arranger Paul Buckmaster bathed the tracks in a warm and enticing glow. The only complaint is that, due to its size, the CD reissue doesn't remotely do justice to the colorful packaging of the original album. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Elton John's BEST effort, bar none.
Ahhhh yes ... a taste of what was to come with "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". In my opinion, THIS was EJ's absolute BEST work as a complete package. Yes,(although I'm sure many would disagree) dare I say, even BETTER than "Yellow Brick Road". This masterpiece is a MUST HAVE for any music fan, let alone any Elton fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars great album
DANIEL,CROCODILE ROCK may have been the hits but DON'T SHOOT ME is much more TEACHER I NEED YOU,ELDERBERRY WINE,BLUES FOR BABY AND ME,these are all awesome tunes the final HIGH FLYING BIRD these a just an example of some of the great tunes ELTON and BERNIE would come to write.

5-0 out of 5 stars A highly important album!
'Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player' is clearly one of the most distinguished albums of my music collection. Not only because I am a piano player myself, but also because it's full of evidence that Elton John is both in a great musical shape and in a good mood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Rock
Way back in the dark ages of 1976, when I was significantly younger, this album was played everywhere. The album went to number one on the charts and became the biggest selling live album of all time up to that time. The album was eventually certified 6 times platinum.
5-0 out of 5 stars Peter Frampton - 'Frampton Comes Alive' (A&M)
Review no.77.Talk about your '70's arena rock staple. It's been said before, but I sort of believe that it's true:"If you lived in the suburbs, you were issued a copy of this album".I know I had an lp copy as well as an 8-track and a cassette copy of this gem at one time.First put out in 1976,I clearly recall tunes off this album being played SO much on FM radio, you ended up with several of them 'etched' in the back of your brain.'Frampton Comes Alive' STILL holds the harsh test of time.Total of fourteen tracks with a duration of 78:06.One of the longest CD reissues I've ever encountered. It's all good, from the guitar noodling of "Doobie Wah", "Show Me The Way", his all-time greatest ballad "Baby,I Love Your Way",the foot-stomper "(I'll Give You)Money", his Stone's cover "Jumping Jack Flash" and the album finale, the 14-minute historic (in it's own right)"Do You Feel Like I Do". You know, I believe this was playing when I partied for the very first time. An absolute must-have. Great slice of '70's rock,no doubt.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of rock's finest live albums 30 years later
Peter Frampton's Frampton Comes Alive was released in January of 1976.

4-0 out of 5 stars other stuff to check out
I am a huge fan of John Fogerty's solo music and his music with CCR. If you enjoy his roots-rock style then I strongly recommend that you check out the following:
4-0 out of 5 stars A fine complement to Chronicle
Chronicle Volume 2: Twenty Great CCR Classics proves that Creedence Clearwater Revival was not just the great singles band as presented on Chronicle. The tracks "Born on the Bayou" and their sizzling cover of "The Midnight Special" are the only songs that still receive airplay on album-oriented rock stations and are among their best work. There are actually a lot of cover songs that work on varying degrees. While the R&B-flavored "Night Time Is The Right Time", the Southern sounds of "Cotton Fields", and the rollicking "My Baby Left Me" work very well, their versions of "Good Golly Miss Molly" and "Before You Accuse Me" are decent at best. When they stick to their originals, the results are very solid as exhibited on "Tombstone Shadow" and "It Came Out of the Sky." There's also a noticeable rockabilly sound here as shown on the Ricky Nelson cover "Hello Mary Lou" and "Don't Look Now." A pleasant surprise in this collection are the opening "Walk On The Water" and the scorching "Pagan Baby", songs which prove that CCR could have been a great jam band if they chose that route. Other solid tracks here include the rocker "Born to Move" and the melancholy ballad "Wrote a Song for Everyone." A few of the songs near the end such as "Molina" and "Lookin' for a Reason" showed the band was running out of steam creatively hence their breakup soon after. While not containing as many top notch tracks as Chronicle (what greatest hits album does?), Chronicle Vol. 2: Twenty Great CCR Classics shows that the band was more than just those fantastic 3-minute singles that have found a home on classic rock and oldies radio.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Chronicle I
Very good assortment of CCR but not near the level of Chronicle I. Chronicle II is still a must have for CCR fans and with classics like "Midnight Special" it is also a decent purchase for those looking to hear more CCR variety. ... Read more

Yes, there are a lot of debates about the 'politics' behind this album but none of these matter for me.

As much as any record, CSN's 1969 debut ushered in the early '70s singer-songwriter boom. Yes, this was a group, but it was one made up of three coequal composer/vocalists, each with a heady resume--Crosby an ex- Byrd, Stills in Buffalo Springfield, and Nash a former member of the Hollies. Each supplied distinctive material and contributed to CSN's trademark harmonies. The addition of Neil Young made the supergroup an edgier outfit. There's a purity to the original trio recording, however, that would never be recaptured. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still my all time favorite album!!!!
I just got a new CD after having lost my old one a couple of years ago and listening to it again with a glass of wine with the years first autumn fire brought back so many incredible memories. A true masterpiece of lyrical and musical geniuses coming together to produce a sound unlike any other. If you don't have this complete album (CD) in your collection, quite simply it is incomplete.

5-0 out of 5 stars These tracks dominated the early 70's...
for my generation. When the album appeared in the fall of 1969, I was just out of the Army and ready to use my college degree to conquer the world of East Coast journalism, marry my first and only girlfriend whom I thought had waited for me, and become rich and famous and happy for the first time in my life. Twenty-four months after I bought the record, I moved to the Southwest and married a woman I'd known for only a few weeks, and was working for a dead-end weekly paper. So much for the dreams of youth. But it isn't the fault of the record, which I wore out, along with millions of other buyers, throughout 1970-'71. It is hard to say which LP is better, this one, or the follow-up, Deja Vu. Both belong in the collections of anyone who likes singer-songwriters, super-groups, and good music. My first love's name was Judy, and so the suite for "Judy Blue Eyes", while penned by Steve Stills for his then-girlfriend Judy Collins, was my anthem also, for most of the two years that I played this Atlantic LP continually. It is not the only good song on the album, however. Neither Crosby, Stills, or Nash ever had any significant impact on American music as solo artists, but together, in this magical release, they were huge, and enduring.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rock Classic
A must have for late 60's, early 70's soft rock fans. The remastered version is terrific. I forgot how great this album is..........A Classic!! ... Read more

Tired of the showboating image that his early live performances had saddled him with--and that his black audience viewed as demeaning and degrading to his musical talent--Hendrix dissolved his Experience in 1969 in search of a more terra-firma-grounded, blues-oriented persona. On New Year's Eve, Hendrix, his old Army buddy bassist Billy Cox, and ex-Electric Flag drummer Buddy Miles performed a loose, jam-filled set at New York's Fillmore East (completists will want the panoramic though uneven Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hendrix travels the Blues Road less taken .
And it has made all the difference. This is a great album indeed.Jimi was moving on and into a new soulful blues path.He did the flower-power gigs, because he enjoyed it and he could sell it.He was just in the process of rediscovering the blues, that had influenced so many rock artists, without them even knowing it. His musical magick lives on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hendrix - Band Of Gypsys
That - the title of this review - is what it said on the spine and green Capitol label of the very first copy (and first Henrix album) I ever bought, which was originally released in April 1970 - eighteen long months after the Jimi Hendrix Experience's third and final studio album, "Electric Ladyland." The group was already fracturing by then, though the soldiered on in the studio and on tour through a final US date June 30, 1969, after which a frustrated Noel Redding split for England and Fat Mattress (Reprise collected eight of the group's best known tracks, added four unreleased in the US, and a "giant poster" for "Smash Hits" that July). Many factors and motivations - financial, political, cultural, personal, musical - likely led to the short lived Band Of Gypsys. Jimi had already produced a Buddy Miles solo album and worked with the drummer (noteably on part of "Ladyland"). Billy Cox was an old Army buddy, fine bassist, with no ambitions to write songs - he patiently worked with Hendrix for over a year during 1969 - 70 as the guitarist developed new songs and opened his dream studio, almost until the end (Cox split after being dosed with PCP at one of Hendrix's final Euro dates). And, perhaps symbolically if not intentionally, BOG was an all black band.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pure genius ,this is the reason I play guitar .
This is Absolute genius , the violence inflicted on his strat is mindblowing ,this album was slated when it first came out by reviewers. It is one of the best live albums of all time ,pity no decent video footage exists. If you're a guitarist buy this album , you ll love it ,and if you don't you ll take ideas from the myriad of licks in the music . Its a essentially soul album with great basslines etc. This record has a essential lesson to all in the music industry ,be careful what pieces of paper u sign he got swindled by a record company for a one dollar contract when he was unknown . ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For a Dylan rock album, it ain't half bad, babe...
I'm old enough to have been a Dylan fan since his totally folk and protest beginnings, and I did not approve of his switch to electric rock. However, honesty compels me to admit I owned this when it was an LP and played it a great deal. If any of his gazillion rock efforts in the past 40 years are really better than Highway 61, I'd be shocked. A lot of people think "Blood on the Tracks" is the best Dylan record, but I played that once and gave it away. This one, however, I kept until it wore out. Now, at almost 62 years old, I still play his debut LP, and "The Free-wheelin' Bob Dylan" and especially "The Times They are a Changin'" but his rock efforts do not thrill me. I admit that changing to rock and roll was in Bob's best interest---he's back high on the charts with his new album, and the man is older than I am---but I have always missed the young Woody Guthrie disciple. "Highway 61" gives you the Woody clone electrified, animated and rockin' up a storm.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blistering Images in Rhyme
This is Bob Dylan at his very finest and this is probably his best record, from "Like a Rolling Stone" to the album's closer, "Desolation Row," the listener is assaulted with blistering images in rhyme that she will never forget. Dylan changed the shape of the musical landscape with this record, changed rock and roll forever. His songs broke the three minute mold, they weren't about love and love lost anymore. In fact some of them are darned hard to understand, but they stay with you none the less. Bob Dylan was, and is, the poet laureate of Rock and Roll, the poet laureate of America. Love after we're all gone, his lyrics will be sung, recited, read.

5-0 out of 5 stars It takes a lot for such an album
The only album I ever bought with nothing but great songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars "All's Fair in Love and 'War'"
U2 started a string of masterpieces with 'War' their first brilliant album from their early years. While 'Boy' and 'October' are excellent and reinvented the wheel of pop music, 'War' is more accomplished and varied musically and is conceptually sound. The raw power of their early years is harnessed on this album as well as an expertise the two predecesors lacked. There are really two sides to the album:One could be called "War;" the other could be called "Love," but they are both intertwined throughout.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent album
I have been looking to purchase some U2 CDs for quite some time now.I finally began my U2 collection about a week ago with this CD - WAR, probably their most popular album.Released in 1983, WAR was U2's breakthrough album, beginning their journey toward becoming one of the decade's most popular bands. From what I've heard, it's probably the group's most political album, though I can't back that up, as it's the only U2 recording I've heard so far. However, having heard WAR, I intend to hear many more.
3-0 out of 5 stars Sorry - Surprisingly inconsistent:
U2 wanted to broaden their musical horizons and vary their styles. U2 does make a very talented and varied record with War. Instead of putting out the blockbuster everyone says this is supposed to be, War just finds U2 in transistion sounding at times confused and unfocused. Sunday Bloody Sunday gets my hopes up and it is my all time favorite U2 song. Seconds and New Years Day keep the hope alive. The next two are pretty good and I am still optimistic this will be great. Well my jaws drops when I hear the second half of the album, just horrible. Refugee is a genuine attempt at something different, but fails miserably. Bono sounds awful and the instrumentation is all over the place. Two Hearts beat as one contains no real melody that is complete. The rest of the album is rather forgettable. War makes a valiant attempt establish U2 as a band who will be around for a long time. This feels like they were not sure what direction they wanted to take. They would struggle to find their niche until their breakthrough Joshua Tree. I am a U2 fan and owned war, so get the album you will probably love this album. I am one of the few that just was not sold on War. Not a bad album, but I wished it was better. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Though Jackson Browne's albums are not plentiful--in a career that stretches 32 years, he's released just over a dozen--they're filled with songs that serve as resilient touchstones for millions who passed through those decades. Originally forging a way for himself as a songwriter, his debut, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Anthology Of A Truly Righteous Rocker
THE VERY BEST OF JACKSON BROWNE is a great anthology of Browne's best work from throughout his career. Over the course of 32 songs, you can hear him age gracefully from the innocence of the early days through his politically-edged work of the mid-to-late-80s, to the more mature work of his later years. Browne's belief, shared with most rockers of his generation, that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 on drug-smuggling charges was unjustly convicted makes THE VERY BEST OF JACKSON BROWNE an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much missing to call it the very best
And it's too slanted towards Browne's later work.Save the $$$ on the compilation and just get his CDs.They're all worth it and the album cuts you are missing could be your favorite songs.I especially miss "That Girl could Sing."

1-0 out of 5 stars Huh?
This is a joke.It has too much uninspired music from Browne's later albums, and leaves out classics like "That Girl Could Sing."Sadly, there are no decent collections of Jackson Browne's music yet released, and fans will still have to get all of his great albums separately and make their own collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo Bruce, Bravo
I discovered Mr.Springsteen when I was just 7 years old, with his publication of The Rising, and have gone to every one of his concerts since then.
5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece that was hard to top.
It's easy to forget how good this album is or take it for granted. When I first heard it in 1975, I was swept away with Bruce's cinematic approach and intensity. The Phil Spector-like production values and lyrical visions of tough luck kids onfast cars or motorcycles wanting out of the dreary overcast Jersey landscape, looking across the river to New York, hoping for a better life is poignant. He captures the characters and the moods very well. This is a unifying theme thoughout most blue-collar neighborhoods in America. It was a very romantic view of young America with a mix of doo-wop, hustlers, rock and roll, and West Side Story images. This is without a doubt..ONE OF THE TEN BEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME! Unfortunately, when you hit 75 home runs with a .450 average for one season, everyone expects the same again and again. In my estimation, I've always been waiting for another Born To Run, but that would be impossible. 1978's Darkness, was a shadow of that. 1984's Born In The USA came close. It's the Orson Welles syndrome, after Citizen Kane...how can you top that! Well, if Bruce never recorded another note after Born to Run, he would have still made rock history. Every song is a Rolls Royce in production, melody and lyrical values. When you create a masterpiece...what can you do for an encore?

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums ever....
First, let me preface this by saying that I am NOT a rabid fan of Springsteen's body of work post "Born to Run". That said, I was 15 years old when I had the opportunity to see a 1977 Springsteen concert, and that show still stands as one of my favorite concerts of all time.Born to Run was played almost in its entirety, and immediately became a part of my vinyl collection immediately afterwards.

5-0 out of 5 stars a masterful work
This is a perfect album...and I am not even a big Bowie fan! Sonically, production wise, musically, the arrangements, the pacing as well as the strength of the songs...this is a brilliant work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stardust Memories
David Bowie's fifth LP transformed him into (duh) a rock 'n roll star. There was much promise of him becoming one with his third CD, The Man Who Sold the World. However, he then backed up a bit - in terms of volume, not quality - with the unbelievably masterful Hunky Dory, a mosaic of rock, pop, folk, psychedelia, and whatever else was in arm's reach. On The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders From Mars, Bowie's flair for the dramatic became a full-blown obsession. While uptempo hard rock once again formed the core of the record, gentle acoustic numbers and genuine pop was not neglected. The result was what may or may not be his greatest record, but it is certainly his definitive one, ie, it is the one that best defines him.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bowie Rules
Bowie has staying power. His art, genius, humor, talent shine through in this collection.Rock and Roll Suicide may have saved my life 30 years ago.I am grateful for the joy he has shared through his music and voice. ... Read more
