5-0 out of 5 stars First Aerosmith Greatest Hits CD I Bought
A lot of people complain that Aerosmith churns out to many greatest packages. This is the first one I have purchased and I am pleased.
5-0 out of 5 stars 5 STARS FOR THE MUSIC - SAVE YOUR MONEY YOU ALREADY HAVE IT ALL- 2 NEW SONGS NOT WORTH IT
FIRST I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT THIS RECORD IS A TIME WASTER. IT'S WASTING OUR TIME UNTIL AEROSMITH CAN FINISH THEIR NEW ALBUM. IF YOU'RE LIKE ME, YOU PROBABLY HAVE ALL OF THIS MATERIAL EXCEPT FOR THE 2(NEW SONGS) WHICH ARE LEFTOVERS FROM PUMP! SAVE YOUR MONEY!AND NOW......
1-0 out of 5 stars The reason this exists.
Aerosmith is contractually obligated to Sony Music to deliver another record this year. They had begun recording one, but Steven Tyler had to have throat surgery - taking him away from singing for months - and another bandmember was diagnosed with cancer and has begun treatment, preventing him from playing with the band also.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but certainly not their best.
I too am mystified by all the hype about this being one of the greatest albums of all time. It's OK and it rocks in spots, but it sounds like it was recorded in a cheap mobile home with a 4-track tape recorder. I know, this is what some critics say makes it great. Why? If you listen to their earlier albums like 12 x 5, Out of Our Heads, Aftermath and Rolling Stones Now! (from 1964-66), you'll understand why I think Exile's sound is vastly inferior. These albums featured heavy R&B styles with a full rich sound recorded in L.A. and the old Chess Studios in Chicago. Sorry, I just don't get it. I first bought this album when it came out in '72, and remains one of the least played Stones album in my collection. Not counting Goats Head Soup etc. which have long been sent to the grooveyard. The tinny, shallow sound of Exile sounds like minor-league Stones to me. I give it four stars, because a minor league stones album is still better then most others. They were after all..All-Stars.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Stones Album, but overrated
This is one of those items in pop culture that has gained a reputation as something that is supposed to be fantastic. You are supposed to love it, to think it is one of the greatest albums of all time. It always amazes me that people buy into these things.
3-0 out of 5 stars A LITTLE OVERRATED
I bought this cd back in 1993 at the age of 16. I was already a huge fan of "Let It Bleed" , "Beggars Banquet" and "Sticky Fingers". I bought this cd because i belived the hype, plus i love double albums. This is the one time where i think this doudle album should have been shortened into a very good single albumn. Even now 13 years later, I listen to this cd and I feel the same way I did in 1993. Sometimes you listen to an album and it just dosen't click, then you listen to it years later and it clicks. That is not the case with "EXILE ON MAIN STREET". This album is just too long. The Beatles "WHITE ALBUM" is a long album as well, but it just works. "EXILE ON MAIN STREET" sounds like The Stones were trying too hard to make an album that sounded like "THE WHITE ALBUM", a little erratic with some backround noise on some songs, some songs very polished, some songs sounding a little un-finished. Just my take....you can disagree if you want.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent concept/rock opera
I am a major fan of The Who and have been since their debut lp in 1965....however....while this may be considered the first rock opera ....it is NOT the first rock concept album.
5-0 out of 5 stars The album that immortalized The Who forever and spawned the ROCK OPERA GENRE
The Who's fourth studio(and fifth overall) album Tommy was released in May of 1969.
5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, I think it's (more than) Alright!
The Who are one of the greatest rock bands of all time.If you want amazingly great classic rock and roll, buy every single Who album (along with the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and Bob Dylan).Townsend, Daltrey, Enwhistle, and Moon formed one of rock's greatest foursomes.Townsend's compositions could range from straight, pure, raw rock ("The Who sing My Generation") to complex and inspiring ("Tommy" and "Quadrophenia")."Tommy" is my favorite of the Who's work, followed closely by "Who's Next", "My Generation", and "Quadrophenia".

Editorial Review

If rock's most successful and memorable acts have usually succeeded by wrapping their own distillation of music history and personal tastes in whatever fashionable trappings are currently gripping the culture, it's hardly surprising that the Cars remain one of the most enduring symbols of the punk/new wave era. This 20-track anthology distills that argument perfectly. Ric Ocasek's songs embody a solid '60s sense of pop craftsmanship informed by a trend-conscious stylistic sheen and a cynical, slippery emotional detachment that's often betrayed by his own distinctly weary brand of romanticism, from the anxious pop of "Just What I Needed" and "You're All I've Got Tonight" to the melancholy-on-ice musings of "Drive" and "Tonight She Comes." Sixteen of the 20 cuts here were chart singles, and radio staples like "Bye Bye Love" and "Dangerous Type" might as well have been. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A baby band...................
The CARS were one of the most annoying, dumb, pathetic, lame, overrated, stupid, lousy, and awful bands ever came out in the 70's. Their lead singer RIC OCASEK sings horribly and sings like a baby. This greatest-hits album was a huge joke that each and every song is incredibly bad.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fool Always Believes
The music from the 1970's remains as classic these days as apple pie. While so many people are much, much more interested in acts today that seem to be more about being on MTV like Beyonce', Justin Timberlake and Usher, many of the ppast have been more about the music and the heart and soul of authentic visions of simple pop music. That was the case with The Doobie Brothers. With the groups' everchanging lineup, they've still known how to make some of the best fuilty pleasures in music that still remain delightful to listen to. Although keyboardist Michael McDonald became the lead in the mid to late 70's, and left the group for solo efforts, the soul still remains as one with the classic group, and that is well shown on this greatest hits collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much filler
Another one of those Greatest Hits compilations that just has too much "filler" material in it.In other words, they throw in songs which weren't that much of a hit when new and haven't exactly grown in popularity since.I hate buying a Greatest Hits CD and having to hit the 'skip' button at every other song.By that token, I regret having purchased this one. ... With their dueling guitar leads and harmonies built on a double drummer foundation, the Allman Brothers Band cast the mold for the southern rock sound that would proliferate in the '70s. Virtuoso musicians, their songs drew upon a number of southern influences, including country, the blues, New Orleans jazz, and even gospel, creating a sound that was distinctly theirs. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great collection of signature songs from a great American band
The Allman Brothers Band epitomizes just how much Southern rock has become part of the American music history. They were the first one the scene to put together many different musicial influences to come up with a rock sound that differed from the blues-rock bands that came out of the UK during the 60's and all the way through the mid-70's. Taking their influences from such diverse southern music styles as gospel, jazz, bluegrass, country and, most of all, the root of all that is rock: the blues. Helping pioneer the dueling lead guitarists (Thin Lizzy had also started using this style of guitar arrangement), The Allman Brothers Band had what many consider two of the best rock guitarist who ever picked up the instrument in Duane Allman and Dicky Betts. As great a player as Betts was the band and its sound would be known throughout by the slide-guitar work of Duane with his brother Gregg Allman fronting the band and its well-written tunes.

Though one of rock's most influential figures, David Bowie's accomplishments are pocked by some distinct ironies. The Single (1) CD version of the "Best of Bowie" is the one you should get if you are just interested in his all-time greatest hits (the ones that they regularly play on FM radio). The 2 CD version has a lot of junk on it that you do not need. The extra CD only has ONE song that is worth having and that is the "The Man Who Sold The World".You can save your money and buy the 1 CD version and just download "The Man Who Sold The World" from Limewire or Kazza.

The most striking thing about this two-disc overview of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers is the powerful case it makes for its creators as the most consistent band of not only their era, but of all time. Think of another rocker who can claim to have created a quarter-century of recordings that, when ranked on a 10-point scale, never dip below a solid 7? Indeed, while disc 1 reflects a marginally more aggressive mindset than disc 2, it wouldn't be difficult to imagine the discs flip-flopped; maturity has yet to induce lethargy for Petty and the boys. 5-0 out of 5 stars the best!
This is non-stop great music! I was mostly a fan of Mary Jane's Last Dance and decided to explore more Petty. Now I have awesome songs like Learning to Fly, Runnin Down a Dream, The Waiting, Free Fallin', I Won't Back Down and Listen to Her Heart! All the other tracks are great too! This music really puts you in a good mood. So, the next time you're having a bad day just put on some Petty and relax.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Carrer-Spanning Collection
I already own "Greatest Hits", but this 2 CD set makes that seem sort of obsolete now. The one gripe I had with "Greatest Hits" was the fact that it didn't include "You Don't Know How it Feels" (Yes, I am very well aware that "Wildflowers came out the year after "Greatest Hits", but there was no reason he couldn't have included it as a new track), and while it is on this collection, one other song that I absolutely love is missing from here, "The Last DJ". How this gem was overlooked, I'll never know. Otherwise this is one of the great 2 CD career spanning sets I've ever come across.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't be any better!!
Since I have recieved this CD, it is ALLLL I listen to. The collection is a perfect mix of all of his best songs. It is absolutely amazing. I am so in love with this CD I can't even put it into words. Very rarely can you find a CD that you can listen to from beginning to end and not have to skip over any songs you don't like--especially since this set has 2 CDs! But I can honestly say that NOT ONCE do I have to skip any of the songs. They're all my favorites and I would suggest this CD to anyone that likes Tom Petty. Even if you only know a few of his songs, the rest WILL grow on you! I promise! 100% worth the money--don't hesitate!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
This is one album that just hits the spot in every way. Jethro Tull is just an amazing band. This album contains some outstanding songs. Locamotive Breath in my opinion is one of the greatest songs ever written. Of course Aqualung is a classic but Cross-Eyed Mary, and Hymn 43 are great songs. All I can say is outstanding.

4-0 out of 5 stars Four stars from me is 5 for almost everyone else...
... considering that I have only ever given 2 albums 5 stars (Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick and Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here). This album is on the high end of 4 star albums (which, for me, still makes an album a high-water mark for a band).
5-0 out of 5 stars Taking on the C. of E.
Previous to Jethro Tull's "Aqualung" several singer/songwriters took pot shots at orgainized religion. But they were mostly cheap shots as well. Ian Anderson gave it both barrels--passion and intelligence. I don't think the Church of England expected this lambasting, nor do I think ever recovered from it.

It's hard to imagine, but Beatles resident mystic George Harrison has arguably become the band's most curmudgeonly cynic. We offer as evidence this splendidly remastered 30th-anniversary edition of his 1970 multidisc solo epic. If the mini-boxed set's booklet and twin inner CD sleeves won't convince you (the album's familiar cover is colorized and altered to include backdrops of a freeway-tangled cityscape and nuclear reactor cooling towers, respectively), then maybe his liner-note apology for Phil Spector's "big production" (kind of like Da Vinci grousing about Mona's crooked smile) or his laconic, stripped-down, 2000 rethink of "My Sweet Lord" will. With such a mindset, it's unsurprising Harrison has allowed a nearly decade-and-a-half gap to grow between recordings. Still, no amount of grumpy auto-revisionism can subtract from the admittedly overwrought majesty of these tracks, which were the logical sonic extension of Read more

Only 5 stars?? One of the most unacknowledged musicians in one of his finest works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Post-Beatles, but not up to Beatles Standard
My musical awakening came on the back of three artists - George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Jethro Tull. They were three 'sounds' I just loved at the age of 12. Of them, I've remained a JT fan to this day, and a Bob Dylan fan until his Christian era (though I still listen avidly to his music up to that point). George Harrison I never followed beyond Living in the Material World. The last thing I bought was Extra Texture and found it disappointing.

Queen brought a whole new meaning to the phrase over the top. While rock & roll flamboyance stretched back at least as far as Little Richard, Freddie Mercury continued to camp it up, taking little seriously and smirking at the music's growing pretensions while partaking in them no small bit. Many of the band's singles hold up extremely well, such as "Killer Queen" and "You're My Best Friend". The quartet's canny sense of melody and sophisticated vocal harmonies--not to mention Mercury's raised eyebrow--have traveled well through the years. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I Honestly Don't Understand Why This Band is So Loved
I just don't like Queen. Their songs never fail to bore me and/or worse; the songs in their catalogue are too pretentious and way too overdone. They are way, way, overplayed also. I get very strong allergic reactions every time I hear "Bohemian Rhapsody" on the radio and the only cure is switching the radio station fast. Ironically, "Bohemian Rhapsody" isn't even on this compilation, which is odd, but I don't have time to worry about it. Also, by the age of three weeks old, every being on Earth has heard "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions" at least 150 times. "Another One Bites the Dust" is a boring song in which not enough happens, while "Killer Queen" is a sappy vocal song. I like Queen's "Somebody to Love" but that's about it.
1-0 out of 5 stars ..AND THIS IS A ROCK BAND?
Has any band ever aspired to be thought of in the same breath as Led Zep or Deep Purple than Queen? It is debatable apart from the first album and the odd single that they could be classed as a rock band ( i hold up 'radio gaga' for proof probably one of the most trite songs in musical history or since, well 'fat bottomed girls')) In fact Queen were nothing if not a pompous mish mash of rock and pop and failing on all counts all with the help of Roy Thomas Baker who suceeded in over producing everything he twiddled his knobs on (check out Lone Star's first album) Brian May plays the same guitar solo throughout. He claims the late great Rory Gallagher as an influence-(can't see it myself)and Freddie Mercury just wanted to be an opera singer (i want to break free is his absolute nadir) you get an attempt at rockabilly (crazy little thing called love) and every drummers standard party peice (we will rock you)alongside a host of other radio friendly drivel. Come on never has a band had such pretensions as Queen. They never were sure what they wanted to be and if there aspirations were to be considered one of the all time greats like Purple or Zeppelin then they and there mass of devotees were sadly dissapointed) How they became so massive is a mystery as much as why INXS were popular.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great companion to "Classic Queen"
First of all, I would like to preface this about all the complaints that Bohemian Rhapsody and Under Pressure are not here....that's right, it's because they're on "Classic Queen", which also was released in 1992 (and actually sold more initially). If you buy the two cd's together, you'll GET IT. Both collections are great and you need both to have the complete Queen picture. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Solid, Underrated CD in the Zeppelin catalog
This album gets overlooked a lot when considering Led Zeppelin's greatest artistic achievements. True, Led Zeppelin IV is the standard by which hard rock recordings are judged, but this album is a wonderful sampling of what Led Zeppelin could do with various music styles and sounds. "The Song Remains the Same" is aptly titled, as it is a continuation of the hard rock for which Page, Plant, and company are justly celebrated.
5-0 out of 5 stars Led Zeppelin - 'Houses Of The Holy' (Atlantic/WEA)
Review no.262.Originally released in 1973,this was Zeppelin's fifth record.TALK about your 'album rock' classic. As I've heard a few Zeppelin supposed die-hards put down 'Houses...',this is no doubt one of their best works,at least I've always thought so.Every single one of the eight cuts here are considered to be sacred (if you'd call it that)to most Zep fans, late night radio listeners and old time hard rockers. From "The Song Remains The Same" to the melodic "Rain Song" to the beautifully written and played "Over The Hills And Far Away". Also remember in my teens, partying until wee hours in the morning to "No Quarter" and "the Ocean". Simply a MUST-have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loose and Relaxed
Houses of the holy follows the same path as Led Zeppelin 4, however the approach is looser and much more relaxed.

Editorial Review

Kicking off A&M's ambitious Cat Stevens reissue program is this 20-song introduction. The set surveys all of Stevens's stages, from the orchestrated late-1960s sides through his early-'70s peak to his more eclectic late-1970s experiments. Following the progression makes for an interesting endeavor as Stevens learns to harness his ambitious ideas with arrangements that don't obscure his rhapsodic messages. Few artists of his generation were more gifted when it came to plucking timeless melodies out of thin air, and his sumptuous voice was always able to movingly convey his bittersweet lyrics. As a career overview (including one previously unreleased cut) this set achieves its goal, hitting all of the chart successes along the way and basically defining his role as a sensitive '70s singer-songwriter, but some fans may opt for the classic early-'70s studio records, which find Stevens at his most consistently touching. Such beautiful music compiled so well. These are those songs that were stuck in your head for years (if you used to listen to Cat).Just simple great tunes, words and singing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
If there really is no such thing as perfect, then "The Very Best Of Cat Stevens" is as close as you can get to a perfect compilation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Zeppelin's only double studio album is also one of rock's best albums EVER!
Led Zeppelin's sixth album Physical Graffiti was released in February of 1975(coincidentally the same month my older brother was born).
5-0 out of 5 stars improves with time
This was a critically panned album when it first came out. Led Zep fans showed disappointment b/c this was much more diverse and challenging then the previously revved up blues and folk songs. Over time, the brilliance to this challenging album has fully emerged. 5-0 out of 5 stars Save me a slice
There is no greater impediment to the pursuit of happiness than a classic rock radio station but the other night I heard Kashmir on 104.3 FM and was reminded all over again of the truth of Otto's last words after he was swept out to sea. If this song isn't a massive inexorable force that advances irresistibly and crushes whatever is in its path I'll eat my copy of Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary. Kashmir is rightly celebrated for Jimmy Page's innovative chord progression guitar riff, not to mention that whole Asian/Arabic rhythm thing, but for me there's only one King of K Town and that man would be a maharajah named Peachey Carnehan. I mean Daniel Dravot. No wait, I mean John Henry Bonham. If there's a better example of controlled jackhammer percussion I'd like to hear it. Bonzo's all over the rest of this big-rig double album too and from Custard Pie to Sick Again the drummer from Redditch will embiggen your woofers and boggle your tweeters. Plant's no slouch here either but I guess that goes without saying. That's a good movie too though isn't it, The Man Who Would Be King? A brilliant performance by Michael Caine and almost certainly the best use of the word "trousers" in the history of motion pictures. I think if Rudyard Kipling were alive today he'd smoke Winston 100s, cycle a rusty old bicycle named Chivers and find a choice spot in his regular rotation for Physical Graffiti.

5-0 out of 5 stars Additional Tracks Missing From Album...
There are a couple additional tracks that missed the official soundtrack release. They are the following:
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Period Soundtrack
This is actually a great peroid soundtrack. There's no dead wood on this one. All of these are classic examples of 70's rock.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brings back memories of the mid-70's
While watching the movie "Invincible" at the theater, the music really stood out because it totally captured the mood of the mid-1970's time period in which it's set.Just hearing these songs that were popular when I was entering my teens brought back lots of great memories.
