Editorial Review

Proving yet again their willingness to dice 'n' slice their burgeoning legacy into new--if not exactly fresh--product, the Fab Four Minus One have released this single-disc compendium of their No. 1 hits. Though obviously superfluous to the faithful (who may also find themselves quibbling over the precise definition of "No. 1 hit" and the exclusion of seeming contenders like "Please Please Me" and "Strawberry Fields"), newly arrived visitors from the Pleiades star cluster and other neophytes will find it a concise and generous (nearly 80 minutes) single-disc introduction to the band's career-spanning, unparalleled dominance of pop music in the 1960s. But beyond being a mere trophy case of commercial success (and it won't be hard to find critics who'll argue that these singles aren't even the band's best work), it's also a Read more

these idiots ruined it for themselves. Hello dearest friends, yes that's the title of my review. Why, you ask? Well that's a hard one.
1-0 out of 5 stars parents beware!!! rock music sucks!
parents beware. One moment it is I wanna hold your hand and the next it is forceful sex. One moment it is from me to you and the next it is a shrapnel wound. On Monday it is Can't buy me love and on Friday it's a harem and a broken marriage.
1-0 out of 5 stars An apt title.
I understand why the Beatles are the top sellers in rock music as they suck. They only made about two decent songs in their "Hey Jude" a pretty song, and "Ballad Of John And Yoko". The sixties was a horrible decade of rock music. I would have to be said that only very few good songs came out in the sixties, which one of them is Neil Young's "Down By The River".

This is the first attempt to consolidate all of Sir Elton's hit singles, from three labels, in one collection. It once would've required at least four CDs to own the best stuff here. Many think the legendary performer was at his best in the early to mid-'70s, and the incredible string of singles that ran from 1970's "Your Song" through 1977's "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" remains mighty impressive. But in retrospect, as they're presented here, '80s hits like "I'm Still Standing" and "Sad Songs" add much to an already amazing legacy. Three Disney tunes, the lush "The One," and two from Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars From what I can tell, Disc 1 should have been 2 discs.
I'm an old Elton John / Bernie Taupin fan. That time was Elton's most creative period, and where the most hits came out (both on AM and FM radio). Disc 1 has a lot of great hits, but has a lot missing (including entire albums). On a minor point, there is nothing from Empty Sky (this is OK - it wasn't that great of an album, but should have been represented by something). On a major point, nothing came from (the incredibly great) Tumbleweed Connection. That album had (at least) 4 great hits (Amoreena, My Father's Gun, Country Comfort, and Burn Down The Mission). With those 2 omissions, lets go through the rest of the John / Taupin library.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
I simply LOVE this album.Elton John is a phenomenal artist. His lyrical flow soothes my soul. This album is definitely my comfort music when I'm sad, and my fun music when I'm happy.I pop in my cd while I'm driving down the road and it feels as though I'm taking a stroll down memory lane. These songs fill my heart with wonderful memories and I find myself putting certain songs on repeat.I recommend this CD to anyone who wants to hear some good music.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Elton Collection available today.
There's no way you can reduce Elton John's career to one cd and do it justice. So we have this beautifully remastered collection of hits on two cds. The first cd is devoted exclusively to Elton John's Greatest Hits from the 1970s. This is all right, because many of Elton's long time fans will agree that this was his most creative and prolific period. You get Bennie and the Jets, Crocodile Rock, Honky Cat, Good bye Yellow Brick Road, Philadelphia Freedom, and much more.

5-0 out of 5 stars HoorayFor Roddywood !!
The performances contained in this CD demonstrate a song stylist master at work.Rod has simply taken all the talent, creativity and energy he has remaining and applied it to these masterpieces.Everyone associated with this recording must certainly be proud of their musical endeavors. In all candor, after listening to this CD for several repeated plays,I can honestly state the the American listening public richly deserves this product. Rod has shown the American Idols winners, and losers, how it's done. They, and other musical hopefuls, can certainly take a page from Rod's "playbook", on how to conduct asuccessful longterm career in show business.I suspect that Rod has modeled his career from the great singer and showmanCliff "Ukelele Ike" Edwards. Hopefully, Rod's career will continue into his 90's as did Cliff Edwards.

I love this cd.It's very relaxing and that voice is just fabulous.I have played it over and over since it was released. It sure beats the song book series.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cornerstone Of All That Came Behind It
My title says it all.As a music historian, the release of this album is one of my top 10 moments in the history of recorded music, because it did something that only a handful of other albums ever did - it changed the entire industry.Until 1967, albums by "youth-oriented" artists were rarely more than collections of singles and never seemed to have much flow or continuity - in other words, nothing more than miniature greatest hits collections. But on June 1 of 1967, the Beatles changed everything.Other artists were expanding their horizons as well - the Beach Boys had released Pet Sounds, a bold experiment of sounds mixed with songwriting we had never realized was possible from a young artist. But the mammoth success of Sergeant Pepper would make other albums like this marketable - and it would lead to other recording stars to become artists as much as entertainers.

Longtime listeners have seen it coming:it was only a matter of time before John Mayer dropped the pop star pretense and proved he could really bring it. Chalk it up to one too many Dave Matthews comparisons, or the cupcake-sweet residue stuck to his image after the success of "Your Body Is a Wonderland"--but something convinced Mayer it was time to take him game to the next level. 5-0 out of 5 stars Johnny We Hardly Knew Ya
Holly cow! This guy has been doing a little wood sheddin'. I have Heavier Things and it occasionally makes its way into the CD player and then back to the shelf. Try! stays in the CD player. A very impressive piece of work. Great song selections that carry a little more import than some of Mayer's own pop-oriented writing. But it's really the guitar playing, backed by this incredible rhythm section, that stands out. Mayer set out to prove something to his audience on this disc, establishing himself as a musician to be taken seriously, and he pulls it off convincingly. When you play in a trio format there is nowhere to hide, and Mayer stands at the front of this band and rocks. This is the best CD I've heard in a long time. Its reassuring to know that with all the drivel you hear on the radio, someone still has the integrity to break through the [...] and put out an exceptional CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a concert album should be--a milestone for Mayer
. . .I am probably the newest passenger on the John Mayer Love Train here. The first song I ever heard was "Vultures" at 4:00pm the day I saw him in concert that night with Sheryl Crow in Indianapolis, three days before "Continuum" hit the market. I got to hear him sing it live that night. While waiting for Continuum to come out, I ordered "Try" solely to have "Vultures,""I Got a Woman," and "Good Love is on the Way" (I hope he'll release a studio version of this awesome rocker!) to tide me over, so to speak. But what made me a true believer once I got this thing in my hands was hearing "Out of My Mind."Close your eyes and you'll swear that Ray Charles is singing and Stevie Ray Vaughn is playing the guitar. But no--apparently this is John's composition, played and sung by John with--dare it I say it?--SOUL.And it's not even the peak of the concert. There's lots more to come. The encore section is 20 minutes long, including a raw rocking version of "Something's Missing."Yes, I have to ignore the sexist lyrics of "I Got A Woman" and just listen to that blues guitar wail, but after all, he didn't write that one.Mr. Charles did. There's a lot of variety here--a fun, funky cover of Hendrix' "Wait Until Tomorrow", "Daughters" (for those of us who can't get enough of "classic John"). The "green" song that follows "Out of My Mind" reminds me of the Beatles circa 1969."Vultures" rocks, of course--the only thing missing are the keyboard parts from the "Continuum" version.I love the way he ends this one--it fades out to him and this little funky rhythmic thing.

OK, John Mayer, whoop-whoop; I saw him on "Austin City Limits" awhile back, and I (AND my Wife, too!) thought it was Nelson Mandela's step-son, Dave Matthews. And now, he's gone and 86'd Jessica ("What...ME worry?") Simpson, too."Fifteen Munutes of Fame," Johnny...OK, all THAT aside: I don't know who Mayer is (ahem) "cozy" with, because, like Johnny Lang and the aforementioned Matthews, he HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO SAY.And, again: all THAT aside, how did this @#$% manage to get the Who's bass player and Keef's drummer to provide the thythm section for this mess?Save your money,or go buy Tony Joe White's newest CD. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A wink is as good as a nod to Rod
I'm in the process of confirming the rumour that Rod was being seriously considered for a knighthood until the royal family was accidently subjected to listening to this CD.The rest,as they say,is history. Let's get serious, Every performer of Rod's stature has the right to dress up and sing like a lounge lizard once and awhile. But like every good joke you only have to tell it to the audience once, not three times and counting. The only group that applauded the release of this CD were chronic insomniacs. Rod needs to emerge from the "counting room" of his Graceland mansion in St.Tropeze and get serious about the music instead of the bottom line. Forecasts are not promising. The music industry is abuzz, that his next project under consideration is a tribute album to the legendary Harry Reser and the Clicquot Club Eskimos orchestra. It's being leaked on the web, that through the state of the studio art, Harry's instrumental tracks are being combined with newly created lyrics for many of his best selling tunes. The standouts include,"The Old Town Pump" and"Send Me Back My Honeyman".I have serious reservations concerning the project's success, particularly given the weak performances represented on the American Songbook Vol.3. However, hope springs eternal.

1-0 out of 5 stars Only One Star for Rod
Sorry, Rod, you're still not sexy. And if I had the choice, you wouldn't get any stars from me.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart
I know this has been said before, but this music makes me want to throw up.How many of these records can he make? Are we going to be treated to 6, 7, 8?While they still sell, I suppose he would be crazy to turn down the big bucks.Who would have guessed this is how Rod Stewart would end up, a more or less faceless artist working for faceless music promoters? At least he's not playing fairs and beergardens like the hapless $tyx. From the Stars-on-45 Beatles disco medley, to Jive Bunny, to this peppy set, the repackaging of SOMEONE ELSE'S music for fun and profit has come a long way.I agree with the other reviewer who compared the creation of this CD with Napoleon's decision to invade Russia during the winter. After doing this many standards from the same era, I think he should start desecrating 80s tunes now, just to be different.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Album of all time.
I'm not sure if I like the new cover art, but this album will stand the test of time as being the greatest piece Rock n' Roll ever. I havn't heard this version but I'm sure that the audio is just fine for your average listener. The great audiophiles of the world can disect the sounds to death, but if you turn it up (on a decent stereo) I'm sure it sounds better than on vinyl. Who are these people with super hearing anyway?? Are they memebers of the canine family??

5-0 out of 5 stars Sounds great, to me
I don't understand what everyone's gripe is about the sound of this disc, I think it sounds really great. Anyway, "Dark Side Of The Moon" is a masterpiece by Pink Floyd, it really captures their brilliance. I would not hesitate to recommend this version to anyone looking for "Dark Side Of The Moon", it's as good, if not better than the original recording. I'm pleased with it, all of the songs are great, though I think "Money" and "Brain Damage" are my favorites. But, it's all great. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the music - 1 for the format
The "Dark Side of the Moon" is one of the greatest musical contributions of the twentieth century. This truth makes a 5.1 surround sound release long overdue. While looking for a surround sound home theater, I was conscious of getting an SACD compatible unit so that I could specifically listen to this disc. I shopped around at a few stereo stores. None of the salesmen that I spoke with had even heard of SACD. After seeing no units identified as SACD compatible, I purchased a system and hoped for the best. As it turns out, no luck. This release will not play surround sound music in a regular DVD based surround sound theater. While there is supposed to be a format war between SACD and DVD-Audio, it seems that DVD-Audio is winning and SACD is quickly joining the fate of Beta video cassettes. With hindsight, DVD-Audio would have been a superior choice of technology for this 1973 classic. The only way most of us will ever hear the "Dark Side of the Moon" in surround sound is by listening to the live version on the "Pulse" DVD. That written, there's little loss since this hybrid disc plays like a regular CD. I am also baffled by the audio technician wannabee reviewers. To my ears, this disc sounds exactly like the existing audio releases. I'm sure this information is buried someplace within the 298 reviews. I didn't care to read through 50 pages of reviews for a single disc purchase and you probably don't either. Thus I thought I'd pass this along for those especially interested in the surround sound aspect of this release. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Rod Stewart's career has been subject to so many twists that a single-disc overview is somehow both appealingly broad and inadequate to the task of tracing all those zigzags. From beloved rocker of the first order to disco dilettante to pop crooner, Stewart's career has presented challenges to fans who may have been charmed by the rollickingly randy "Maggie May" and bemused by the alarmingly narcissistic "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" This 16-song retrospective touches all the bases without delving deeply into any era. The selections aren't arranged sequentially and the booklet is much more generous with vintage photos than album credits. This best-of collection is clearly aimed at the casual fan, but no album that presents Rod the Mod gems "Downtown Train," "You Wear It Well," and "Reason to Believe" one after another is a throwaway. 4-0 out of 5 stars The Voice Is What Makes It Work
Rod Stewart's penchant for crossing to and from and back through all categories of rock-pop music makes it often hard to define exactly where he fits into all this. The one undeniable constant is his raspy voice that seems to work for him with great affection and appeal. His great versatility to utilize his voice so surreptitiously is a real talent. One CD cannot represent an entire career but it can give us snippets here and there where his distinctive and alluring voice has taken him and us.

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers the basics, but Legacy: The Absolute Best is a better comp
Okay, don't get me wrong, I love the Doors - they made some of the greatest American music (along with Dylan and the Velvet Underground) during the British Invasion days, and their music has not dated in the least. And this two-disc, nineteen-track comp does do a good job of rounding up the bare essentials (Light My Fire, Break On Through, The End, Love Me Two Times, The Unknown Soldier, Five to One, Hello I Love You, Touch Me, Roadhouse Blues, Riders on the Storm, L.A. Woman), it's missing some very important songs, most notably Peace Frog (an inexcusable omission), plus Soul Kitchen, Not to Touch the Earth, Moonlight Drive, Twentieth Century Fox, Back Door Man and a few other good ones that managed to make it on Legacy: The Absolute Best. And why Alabama Song was included in the place of any of the above songs is simply inexcusable - in my mind, that's one of the group's weaker songs (along with Touch Me, while I'm ranting). That said, it's not at all a bad way at all to get into the Doors, and tends to be less expensive than Legacy. So if you need the absolute basics, and nothing more, this would be a good way to get them in one fell swoop. But if you want to dig a bit deeper, that's what Legacy's for.

2-0 out of 5 stars For your own good, please don't buy this!
This two disc set just barely brushes the surface of what the Doors have to offer. Here are some awesome, essential Doors songs you'll be missing out on, just to name a few:

I feel that after Petty released "Full Moon Fever". and hung around with the rest of the Travelling Willburys he lost some of the moxie that his albums had. There were some rather good nuggets left off here like "Shadow Of A Doubt", "Thing About You", and "Letting You Go". I felt the two new songs on here are split down the middle. "Mary Jane's Last Dance" is pathetic, and last desparate act. However, "Somthing In The Air" is a respectable cover of the Thunderclap Newman song from 1969, and in some ways even better. "Mary Jane" though was one of the horrible songs I had to endure listening to the first few months that I moved down to Florida. The oldies saved this from a bad rating.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone who loves music should own this
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Greatest Hits captures just that from their debut in 1976 right up until 1993, before they moved to the Warner label. Around the time of its release, the single "Mary Janes Last Dance" was a huge worldwide smash and that song, and a cover of the old classic Thunderclap Newman "Something In The Air" which was a humble hit in England complemented most of their best and well known hits at the time.

Editorial Review

This packed double-disc is the slim option for fans who find the Eagles' vaunted greatest hits sets too little and the boxed set too hefty. Hit singles large and medium are here, often ("One of These Nights," "Hotel California") still sounding definitive and even tough. Large helpings of favorite album cuts are also included, along with a taster from a promised 2004 Eagles studio reunion. Unfortunately, "Hole in the World," Don Henley's response to September 11, feels just as empty and entitled as "Get Over It," the band's previous state-of-the-union message (from which the newer song represents a philosophical 180-degree turn). But for those seeking an overview of this Southern California juggernaut's successes, as well as telling comments from band members--mostly Henley and Frey--in a well-designed booklet, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Of The Best
This is the best collection of Eagles hits. Every thing you could want is contained in this double disk set. Solid throug and through. Can't go wrong with this one. Must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Eagles' Collection You'll Need
This two CD set has every essential Eagles song. It has everything from the original greatest hits albums from the seventies, and then some. Moreover, the remastered sound means that these classic songs have never sounded better. The sheer number of songs on this two cd set means that this is not the tight set of hits that the classic 1975 collection was, but you can always skip over any extra tunes that you don't like (like the silly "Doolin-Dalton").
4-0 out of 5 stars Still flying high
I can understand the dismay of many Eagles fans, being presented with yet another compilation, a repackaging of the same oft-compiled material. It can seem like another of the Laurel Canyon crowd (Joni Mitchell is the prime example) preaching to us about the evils of materialism while they grow ever richer with reshuffled Best, Very Best and Very, Very Best albums.I suppose, as they are such keen environmentalists, there is some logic to all this recycling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unparalleled Artistry
It's so hard to call any album perfect, but few come as close as this one. Maybe the Beatles, or Dylan can compare to the mastery of artistry, mood, flow and pacing that makes this album feel so right. If an album could melt in your mouth, this one would.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart album
This album contains my favorite song from Pink Floyd, the amazing "Dogs". It's beautiful how this guys managed to create a great album that reflected the reality of their enviroment, back in the 70's. As any other album consider a "classic", Animals is a reminder for all that intelligent music is still alive and well, and that it's possible to critize society with smart and intriguing music.
5-0 out of 5 stars Could Be Their Best
As far as my opinion goes this is my favorite Pink Floyd album. I am a huge fan and like all their music but this one is just amazing. It also seems unfair how under appreciated this album is. It may not have that one huge hit as some of the other albums had, but this one is classic Floyd. Must have for any fan of classic rock music. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Also known as the "rune" album or Zoso because of the medieval symbols adorning the inner sleeve, Led Zeppelin's fourth album, released in 1971, turned them from mere superstars into giant behemoths of the rock world. On tracks like "Black Dog," "Misty Mountain Hop," and "Rock and Roll," the combination of Robert Plant's banshee wails and Jimmy Page's frenetic guitar playing forever altered the stylistic bent of hard rock music. And the foreboding "When the Levee Breaks" demonstrated that Zeppelin could indeed play the blues fairly straight if they so desired. Still, everything here ultimately took a back seat to the album's (and, ultimately, the band's) magnum opus--the expertly constructed and deftly executed classic, "Stairway to Heaven." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"
Music, like any other form of art, is subjective. It is influenced by several factors including, but not limited to, the social and psychological influences of each listener. So all the 'qualified' critics who have decided to post 'nasty' reviews about this cd and the band, are entitled to do so. But in doing so, please validate your negative comments with 'mature' critique. This would carry more weight in deterring potential buyers from purchasing this, or any other cd (if that is your intention).
5-0 out of 5 stars Led Zeppelin - 'Led Zeppelin IV' (Atlantic/WEA)
Review no.930.Originally released to a very deserving and loving public in 1971,as this was of course Zeppelin's fourth record.Eight tracks here,EACH and every one a masterpiece in it's OWN right.Sure, after the first hundred or so times you hear "Black Dog" and "Rock And Roll",they may grow a tad thin, but tunes that N-E-V-E-R grow stale are "Battle Of Evermore",probably FM radio's most requested song of all time "Stairway To Heaven","Four Sticks" and the unforgetable "When The Levee Breaks"(I've heard radio staions actually play this cut DURING heavy rainstorms,ha-ha!).Anyone who has heard/owns a copy of this CD reissue can tell you that LZ-'IV' is both a music AS well as lyrical classic.Highly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why are they so overrated????????????????
Led Zeppelin were simply the most overrated band of all time who were just as bad as NIRVANA and ACDC. They only made about a decent song in "Stairway To Heaven". Rest of the songs just STINK!!! Plant sounds more like a big monkey than a real singer and can't sing at all, HE JUST SCREAMS. Like good singers??????? I recommend go with Foreigner, Dire Straits who were equally the greatest bands with the greatest singers in LOU GRAMM, and MARK KNOPFLER. They are a billion times better than LED ZEPPELIN. Don't listen to the five star reviewers of this page, avoid this piece of junk and go with Foreigner insted. They are legends, not ZEPPELIN!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic that should be in any rocker's collection
Why would anybody consider buying this? You should already own it! I am ashamed of you that you are reading reviews and considering one of the absolute classic rock and roll albums. I hope that either your previous copy wore out, you are 12 years old and just
