3-0 out of 5 stars A Great singer - but ageing
I am 60 years of age and wanted a good album of GBS which would remind me of my earlier years.I am somewhat disappointed with this because it is a fairly recent recording (late 1990's) and the great singer sounds a bit tired, his age reveals itself in his voice. There is no doubting however the quality, even of the older man, but for me I will continue to hunt for earlier recordings. The selection of pieces can be very subjective but I think the fan of GBS would be very pleased with the tracks laid on this CD.In addition the way he overcomes the weakness in his voice by slight modifications both to pace and range of note is very tastefully done.
4-0 out of 5 stars Songs from God's Servant
I happened to listen to Bev Shea from Bill Gaither's Home Coming Series. What a wonderful man & his songs. They stir my spirit & soul. The words have deep meaning.I would recommend any buyer who has some classic taste to get this album and listen & sing along realising the words.May GOD Bless such people and give them long life and raise more people like Bev Shea for HIS glory. Editorial Review

Whether recording under his own name, collaborating with wife Julie, or contributing guitar work for a range of other artists, Buddy Miller has always put forth a resonant, earthy, even spiritual bearing. So it seems only natural that Miller would turn his focus to the gospel tradition. The songs here celebrate the innate goodness in even the most lost and perplexed among us, keeping sights on the unblinking light of hope at the end of the tunnel. This is still a rootsy affair, though the set is imbued with the social concerns that unite us all. Nondenominational in terms of religious affiliation, this album uses our common language of honest singing and playing, soulful grooves, and top-flight songs to make its points. Read more

When I heard Buddy's music on GAC, I was blown away. What an amazing combination of Dylanesque cynicism, musical talent and honest, grass-roots Christian spirituality. This album is a must buy for anybody who yearns for the honesty of the '60s.

5-0 out of 5 stars spiritual rather than churchy
This is soul-touching music for people who don't DO churchy, preachy, didactic Xtian music. It's thoughtful, serious, soul-full.

I am a big fan of roots music. This album is a beautiful, captivating record that consistently delivers great music, song after song.If you enjoy this album and are looking for some similar great roots albums then I recommend the following:

5-0 out of 5 stars Excited about the Fonotone set!
I was lucky enough to get to attend the release party for the Fonotone Records box set last Thursday in Atlanta.I got to meet Joe Bussard and hear a band from Tennessee whose family is on the set.I couldn't have had a better time.I bought a copy of the Fonotone set at the show and have been listening to it non-stop all weekend. What a great job Dust-to-Digital did in presenting this music, and what a great job Joe Bussard did in recording it.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Weak Effort Of A Box Set By Any Standard
Being a fan of pre-war old-time music and post-war field sessions by Lomax and other, I thought that this box, even though pricey, would certainly be worth it.I was, unfortunately, wrong.Though there are some mighty good tracks to be had with this set, it really could be boiled down to one or possibly two discs. Most of the material is tepid and folky and very affected sounding, completely unlike the pre-war material and and authentic field-sessions. Some of the guitar performances byBlind Thomas (Fahey) and B. Sam Firk (Stewart) are inspired but those with vocals by them are downright awful.Plus, adding to the unnecessary cost is the hard-to-read notes and the mysterious bottle-opener...

5-0 out of 5 stars Hee Haw ain't got nothin' on this!
The Fonotone Records box takes me back to a time in music history I never had the chance to experience. So glad Dust-to-Digital has offered such a diverse sampling of a truly influential era in Southern music history; a chance to connect even further with my Southern roots.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Christmas classic
This is the original Elvis Christmas Album as released in 1957.It was considered very controversial when it was released (as were most Elvis releases during that time), but it was still a huge hit commercially, hitting number 1 on the Billboard album charts (before they created a separate category for Christmas albums).
4-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Album Titles
When Elvis' christmas recordings were reissued on CD, there was apparently some mixing and matching going on.While I totally love this CD, it is not the same one I listened to that my mom had on LP when I was little. It has several additions and omissions from that one, most notably the lack of "If Everyday Was Like Christmas".That song can be found on a CD of the same title, but the track listing of another one called "It's Christmas Time" by Elvis looks more familiar as the one I liked as a kid.Elvis' stuff is always great, though, so I still recommend this one, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Santa Claus is comin' down your chimney tonight!
This was Elvis's first Christmas album, recorded in 1957.It's a certifiable classic.Side one featured Elvis doing secular Christmas songs."Santa Claus is Back in Town" is an awesome blues song that features D.J. Fontana's best drumming ever, arguably."White Christmas" is a fine performance that owes a lot to the Drifters' version."Here Comes Santa Claus" is a cool rockabilly style performance."I'll Be Home For Christmas" is a good ballad."Blue Christmas" is Elvis's best Christmas song, and it made everyone forget the original Ernest Tubb version.Side one closed with the original pop rocker "Santa Bring My Baby Back".Side two of the album featured religious songs. However, only two of the songs are actual Christmas songs. The last four songs are taken from the previously released "Peace in the Valley" EP.But when the songs are as great as these four are, why complain?I highly recommend this CD. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One Incredible Voice
Paul Overstreet has one incredible voice. A voice that is very smooth and you can understand what he is singing. This is one of my favorite CD's by any artist because he sings about everyday life. My favorite song on this CD is Seeing My Father In Me. I definitely can relate to that song because I can see my dad in myself. This is a CD that any country music fan should have in their collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soothes My Soul
You know! it's nice to find a CD that is so easyand pleasurable to listen to. Paul achieves this by his beautiful collection of songs. This is a CD to put on, ensure you're not disturbed, sit back and let the lyrics and music take over.If you are a father and listening to "Seeing my Father in me " does not touch you, then you are not human!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of Paul Overstreetand Love is Strong, Paul Overst
I surely do agree with the person who said that Paul Overstreet does not get enough acclaim for his work. He needs more exposure so that more people will know of his wonderful talent and recoginize his name, knowing that when they hear the name Paul Overstreet on an album that they will NOT be disappionted in what they get. They will know that they will get true country with the warmest regards, but more than this they will be spiritually uplifted, and brought closer to God. Would like some vidios/DVD's also. Go Paul, you have a God given talent, use it, do it for Jesus! but always remain humble and give all the glory to God, who gave you your wonderful talent. Don't ever let fame lead you in the wrong direction. Let's hear more of Paul Overstreet!!! Yeah! God Bless your Ministry, HannahJanein CA ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Yet
This is is great! Espically if you like bluegrassy-ish country music. Stand outs are "Friend Til the End" (upbeat and i listen to it over and over), "Heroes"(honestly, a little corney, but I still love it), "If That Don't Make You Wanna Go"(i heard it the first time live on a Gaither CD and this, in my opinion, is better), and "Peace" (its so touching...sniff...Really though, its very good. I LOVE IT!). I also like "Peace Like a River" yeah i know two songs with "peace" in the title. But "Half a Day Away" and "Yours and Mine" are TOO sappy for me. I skip them everytime. Bottom line: if you like the Isaacs - Get it. If you like modern-y/bluegrass-y country(kind of a contradiction yeah?) - Get it. If you are on the fence - Get it! :)

4-0 out of 5 stars I Think You'll Like It
Heroes, by the Isaacs, is an overall good project. The 'First Family of Bluegrass Gospel' definitely found their niche with the progressive songs "Friend 'Til The End" and "Heroes", as well as more mainstream songs like "Peace". I personally think that "Peace" could be a hit on country radio, because it's kind of Allison Krauss and Union Stationesque. But don't worry, die hard 'old school' Southern Gospel and bluegrass fans-- songs like "If That Don't Make You Want To Go" and "Great Is Thy Reward" will surely be pleasing to your ears. Though I feel there isa little bit of a slump at the end of the album besides "Peace", very good project. A must have for the Christian music and/or bluegrass fan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gatlin Bros. Family Gospel Favorites
Very well done, for just three singers. One of few that carries "Whispering Hope", a favorite of one of our past relatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin BrothersSing Their Family Gospel Favorites
We have almost every Gatlin CD available-This is one of the best--Songs done with different arrangements & are very singable --A mix of old hymns & the Gatlin standards. Really enjoy their version of "Love Lifted Me"

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice country gospel set!
This is a nice Christian country set, from a Top 40 commercial country act that was popular in the 1970s and '80s. Admittedly, Larry Gatlin is sounding a little long in the tooth and slightly shaky as a soloist, but their obvious sincerity and love of the music lifts this album up, and when they sing in an upbeat jubilee style, the Gatlins can really get your toes a-tappin'.There are also some slower ballads sung in a more modern Southern Gospel style, though almost all the songs are older traditional tunes like "Amazing Grace," "Rock Of Ages," Albert E. Brumley's "I'll Fly Away," etc.Another nice thing is that the musical backup is pretty restrained: they just have the band play as much is necessary to get the message across, and leave the emphasis on their vocals and on the words, which is really where is belongs.Gospel fans and Gatlin fans alike should enjoy this record quite a bit. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Solid and Sizzlin'
After hearing Full Moon, Fire on The Mountain, Million Mile Reflections, and many more Charlie Daniels Band albums, I have to say this is my favorite. It's the kind of album you could leave on repeat and it just flows. It's the perfect mix of fast and slow songs. Guitar harmonies and fast fiddle action make this a gem. While this is some great music for taking road trips, drinking, and shooting pool, I'm not so sure I understand what previous comments regarding Charlie hoping this album goes away are all about. I personally e-mailed Charlie regarding this and he said he never made such comments. While he is more active in sharing his beliefs today, this music tells me he found God years ago. This soulful hill-billy rock and blues is not created. It's inspired. You do not know Charlie until you bought this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charlie before he found god
This is the music Charlie Daniels wanted to go away after he quit drinking and came to Jesus. But he was wrong. I remember having this album on vinyl back in the '70s and wearing it out because it spoke to me and my hard-drinkin' outlaw life. Or at least I believed that was my life. Though I haven't come to Jesus, Buddha, Muhammad, Krishna or any of the other myriad deities, I have settled down quite a bit these days. But does that mean my past goes away? I think not. It didn't kill me, therefore it made me stronger. Unfortunately, this CD is the strongest the CDB ever produced. You can point to Nightrider and say, "This is where the best of country and the best of rock met in a funky honky-tonk on a crossroads in a sleepy Southern town, got drunk and went home together and produced a child who never grows old."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Southern Rock and CDB Fans!
This is undoubtedly the Charlie Daniels Band's finest hour, and in my opinion, a classic in the Southern Rock and Country Rock genres."Nightrider" follows on the heels of CDB's commercial breakthrough "Fire on the Mountain" and raises the bar several notches. From the opening track "Texas" through the final track "Tomorrow's Gonna be Another Day," this album epitomizes everything that CDB is about."Willie Jones" is a classic country rock story song, "Funky Junky" and "Evil" rock, and "Birmingham Blues" is a great fusion of Southern Rock and blues.Newcomer, Tom Crain contributes the amazing "Franklin Limestone," arguably his finest moment in his fifteen year career with CDB.Unlike virtually all future CDB releases, there is not a throw away song on here. The songwriting and musicianship are top notch on this album. In addition to CDB, Toy Caldwell of the Marshall Tucker Band, provides an amazing steel guitar on "Damn Good Cowboy."I would recommend this album to anybody who is even remotely into Southern Rock or Country Rock.It is an absolute must for a fan of any phase of the Charlie Daniels Band's career. It is an amazing album. ... Editorial Review

Following the bland, smothering urban-cowboy era of the early 1980s, Randy Travis's loose, flexible vocal phrasing and stripped-down, traditional accompaniment was the breath of fresh air. Along with Dwight Yoakam and George Strait, Travis epitomized the new traditionalism that dominated the remainder of the decade. While his Haggard and Frizzell influences were obvious, his relaxed delivery and flair for understatement set him apart. His voice, plangent and brimming with heart, its twang neither softened nor downplayed over time, remained at the core of his music. Beginning with his first No. 1, "1982," through the snappy "Too Gone Too Long" and the exquisite "I Told You So," Travis and producer Kyle Lehning created a body of music that has stood the test of time, not to mention more recent trends. While this collection isn't complete, it's a fine survey of the pinnacle of Travis's career. Read more

When Randy Travis blew into town, Country Music finally got off of it's knees and took it's place back at the front of the line.Thank God for Randy, Dwight, Patty, Marty, and George Strait. This album covers those Travis numbers that topped the charts, and when you listen to this CD, you'll soon realize why they reached number 1.Included here are "1982", "Look Heart", and "Diggin up Bones"...all great traditional country hits. But my personal Randy Travis favorite is his cover of Sonny James' "It's Just a Matter of Time".Many compared Randy to George Jones, and he did in fact carry forward some of Jones' syle;but there was no doubt that Randy was more influenced by Lefty Frizzel. This is a great album, well worth your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not until his latest ...
First, I second the statement of the previous reviewer, that Randy Travis may be the most underappreciated (and in some Nashville circles...with the exception of the print media)underrated artist,to every hit the streets of Nashville.5-0 out of 5 stars Defining Album for a Defining Career

5-0 out of 5 stars OLD SCHOOL COUNTRY, MODERN VOICE
No one does it better than Randy Travis. The smooth, rich voice reminiscent of the early roots of country music.GREATEST HITS, VOL. 1 is the first greatest hits installment featuring many of Travis' most memorable offerings. You can't miss with this one.5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The True Legands In Country Music
I Remeber When Randy First Hit The Airwaves In 1985 With His Song "1982". "On The Other Hand" Was The Song Of The 20th Century. It Also Contains 1990's "Hard Rock Bottom Of YourHeart", 1988's "I Told You So", And 1992's "If I Didn'tHave You.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sadly, Not What I Was Expecting!
I remember the Hee Haw Gospel Quartet song-segments on the old Hee Haw show as a chance to hear country Gospel done in a reverent, simple, downhome way complete with Roy Clark's excellent, understated, country, flat-top picking. The harmonies and solo instrumentation were excellent and when I saw this Hee Haw Gospel Quartet CD being released, I thought, Wow! The old song-performances from the show in remastered form! I eagerly awaited my purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Whites CD Greatest Hits
A superb C & W group, this CD reflects the quality of their music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great traditional country with a touch of bluegrass
The White family - Buck and his two daughters, Sharon and Cheryl - were steeped in bluegrass, but this collection of their greatest hits from the eighties is a mainstream country album with the occasional bluegrass influence here and there. Though Buck and Cheryl are fine singers, Sharon sang lead on most of their hits with the other two providing backup harmony. The original albums from which this set was compiled gave Buck and Cheryl more opportunity to show their ability as lead singers. Sadly, those albums are long out of print.5-0 out of 5 stars An Indication of What's to Come
This 1987 album should have given fair warning that this was a pure country, crystal clear voiced toe-tappin' trio for the ages. The White's are pure unadulterated country, and proud of it. With the deft hand of Ricky Skaggs (husband to Sharon) producing, this is an album to be collected and cherished. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars jingoistic pablum
Mr. Daniels is clearly profiteering from the War on Iraq, just like those idiots who were selling t-shirts with pictures of the twin towers exploding a day after 9/11. Shame on you, Mr. Daniels. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Chapman's artistic breakthrough
Chapman makes a break with longtime producer Phil Naish in favor of Brown Bannister (White Heart, Amy Grant) and it seems the new combo focused a LOT of attention on making his musical backing more layered and interesting. Chapman himself also steps up to the plate a lot more, handling all the backing vocals, doing some electric picking for a change, and adding lots of "exotic" instrumentation personally (dobros, slides, mandolin, lap steel).
5-0 out of 5 stars One of his best
"Signs Of Life" is one of the most essential albums in Contemporary Christian music.I haven't seen SCC live, but I own many of his CDs.It is one of his best.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
This is quite possibly Steven Curtis Chapman's most inspiring piece of work. The songs on this album come alive as you listen to them.I love listening to this album early in the morning.Unlike a lot of albums these days that have a great title track and a bunch of songs that are mediocre and just act as place holders, this album actually delivers.I think at most there are 1 or 2 songs that I don't enjoy or at least feel is worthy of listening too.If you want to enjoy a well-rounded inspirational album this one is for you. ...
