Editorial Review

Reprising the trio harmony of Walela's debut, vocalist Rita Coolidge is joined by both her sister Pricilla and her niece, Laura Satterfield. The group leans further into their easy blend of Native gospel pop, venturing into a deep country soul a capella in places, most successfully on the first cut, "Gathering of Eagles." "I Have No Indian Name" employs some nice fiddling, and elsewhere banjo, pump organ, and piano serve to accent primitive percussion. The Robbie Robertson Native-rock influence is heard on several of the moodier arrangements, such as "I Know I Don't Walk on Water" and the "When It Comes." Strongest of all, "Cherokee Rose" is a powerful anthem and sister to the title cut on Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt's Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Unbearable songs...
These ladies have some great harmonies and melodies. But the Native American aspect here is overhyped. Its a shame that Rita Coolidge resorts to using her Indian heritage to try to revive her dying career. The album is mediocre. If you're looking for music by Native women that has a lot more strength and originality, check out the trio, Ulali, whom "Walela" has tried hard to copy...but failed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Strictly New Age Christian
This is beautiful New Age, Christian music sung by women who are exploiting their Cherokee ancestry. This is nice music if you're a New Ager, a Christian, or a Christian Cherokee. But if you are a Cherokee who holds the traditional Cherokee beliefs dear, you might find this music downright insulting.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I purchased this CD thinking it was a follow up to the first. Wrong.I love love love the first CD.I've been listening to it daily for over a month now and have turned others on to it as well. However, this CD just does not have the Native American flavor I was looking for. There's no magic. I am still listening to it, but thespiritual high I get from the first CD is definitely not present on one. All in all Rita Coolidge is still one of my favorite vocalists. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you like Charlie and you dig blues, this one's for you.
Great album from a great musician.I, too, would like to hear Travis Tritt on Long Haired Country Boy.(By the way, check out Tritt's new DVD, "Live And Kickin'").However, I believe that it worked out fine the way Charlie set it up. I like the fact that he keeps the rebel attitude without keeping the drug and alcohol references.Charlie Daniels transcends musical genres. He said himself that it is troublesome to him that music is so rigidly classified.Charlie can do it all as far as music is concerned.

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid, bluesy effort from Charlie and the CDB
Blues Hat was the Charlie Daniels Band's initial release on Charlie's own Blue Hat record label. On the record, Charlie pays tribute to the funky blues-rock music that, in addition to country, gospel and Southern rock, greatly influenced him.Charlie does a lot of soulful singing, and he and CDB bandmate Bruce Brown each put down some awesome guitar work. Also, Charlie's longtime keyboard player, Joel "Taz" DiGregorio, is great on piano and organ.Charlie rocks out with "Boogie Woogie Baltimore", "New Orleans Parish Blues", "Birmingham Blues", "Gone Gone Blues", "If It Would Satisfy You", "Looking For My Mary Jane", and "Deep Elm Blues".Also, when Charlie slows things down on "If It Would Satisfy You", "Hard Headed Woman", and "No Fool Like An Old Fool", his voice is especially strong.Somewhat ironically, the weakest song on Blues Hat, at least in my opinion, is the one that got the most radio airplay, although it's basically OK.Charlie's updated version of his classic song "Long Haired Country Boy" is toned down from his original 1974 hit version.References to "getting stoned", "getting drunk", and "taking another tote"(smoking a marijuana joint) are replaced by "getting up", "getting down", and "telling another joke".Even with the updated lyrics, the musical arrangement on "Long Haired Country Boy" is still strong. My problem with the song is Charlie's choice of guest singers."Long Haired Country Boy" was originally a country rocker, and Hal Ketchum, one of Charlie's guest vocalists, fits the song perfectly.Hal's voice has a "rock" feel to it, but it's country at heart. On the other hand, John Berry, at least in my opinion, sounds too much like a pop artist to really "fit in" on the song, although he's had a solid string of country hits.I don't dislike "Long Haired Country Boy", but I think it would have sounded better if Charlie had gotten his buddy Travis Tritt, a Southern country rocker, to sing with him.Still, I believe that Charlie, who has been making music with his band for almost three decades, put out a very good set of songs here.Blues Hat is a solid, bluesy record from Charlie and the CDB.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Fans of the CDB!!!!
Charlie Daniels is just an excellent musician, whether he sings rock, country, or in this case, blues. This album features a great version of Long Haired Country Boy without the dope smokin' lines.I would recommend it to every serious fan of great music ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great dialogue and songs
I have ALL of J. Cash's Christmas albums, as well as many, many others.I like this one especially because it DOES have dialogue and gives listeners who are truly big fans of his a better insight to him and his family/friends.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Talk, Not Enough Music
I love Cash and his songs on this CD are good, but there is way too much dialogue between the songs.I bought this CD so I could listen to Music, not the singers/band talking back and forth about what christmas is/was to them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a good album - but
This album is good - but the one I would really like to have is a 2-album set called "A Tennessee Ernie Ford Christmas Special".I have this on vinyl and I could not find anyhere on the album the date it was released by Capitol. But, it is old!My children are 36 and 42 and they listened to this album in our home as children. RECORD ONE HAS: Sing We Now of Christmas; O Christmas Tree; The Little Drummer Boy; Angels We Have Heard on High; Caroling, Caroling; Good King Wenceslas; The Virgin's Slumber Song; Twelve Days of Christmas; What Child is This; Away in a Manger RECORD TWO HAS: O Come All Ye Faithful; Little Boy King; Slumber Song of the Infant Jesus; Bring a Torch Jeannette Isabella; Good Christian Men Rejoice; The Wassail Song; The Friendly Beasts; He is Born, The Holy Child; While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks; White Christmas4-0 out of 5 stars Where is "Some Children See Him"?
I absolutely agree with the other reviewers - there are not enough cuts on this CD.I remember the LP "The Star Carol" from my childhood which included most of these songs but had others as well. This is obviously a distillation of at least two LP's.Why not include ALL of the cuts available.I would love to have the complete "Star Carol" on CD; as other reviewers have said, that LP WAS Christmas!

4-0 out of 5 stars Strange Mixture
Capital records never cease to surprise me.Ernie released four great Christmas Lps, but none have been released in its entirity. This album has "The Little Drummer Boy" from his "Sing We Now of Christmas" album and "Oh, Little Town of Bethlehem" from his "Christmas album".The remaining tracks are from his classic "The Star Carol" lp that entered charts every year for five years after its release.Capital records, please, don't give us a sorry complitation like this.Release at least one album in its entirity!Bill Gaither and the Ford brothers have released a 2 CD set of his Christmas songs.Hopefully Amazon will soon be selling online. ... Editorial Review

In the 1970s, fiddler Charlie Daniels was one of the few almost completely country-leaning artists to make a play on the mainstream rock market. He did splendidly for a while, and the production values he learned playing in rock-inflected settings show clearly on his first kids recording. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great CD from the Isaacs
I enjoy the entire CD but once again the standout song is by Joe Isaacs.Putting his entire heart and soul into conveying the message of this song, he gives an awesome performance on "Dreaming of a Little Cabin" which he dedicates to his Mom and Dad. I lost my own mother 25 years ago and I can't listen to this song without getting teary. Sonya shares the lead and her voice is, as usual, hauntingly beautiful and the instrumental accompaniment is spectacular. If this were the only song on the CD I would have considered it worth the purchase price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Have an old fashioned Cowboy Feeling Christmas !!
Right off the bat -- while you could TECHNICALLY call the genre' country-ISH, really for the rest of the world this is NOT a "country" Album by any means. These songs are seldom heard magnificent treasures recorded by CLASSIC singing Cowboy (and Cowgirl) Stars in the 1930's, 40's 50's etc. that pour the warm feeling of Christmas out of your Stereo. It feels like an old fashioned American Christmas. You will play this over and over again EVERY evening before Christmas because it feels so warm and Home-y when you listen to it -- like being inside a cabin in the snow with only the light of the wood burning fire place, a cup of hot chocolate or cider in your hands, your feet up and your closest family and friends are all around you--sorry about that--I'm listening to this album as I'm writing this review.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The past mmets the present!
I have been a HUGE ORB fan since I was a little girl in the 70's! I LOVE all the old stuff and some of the newer (especially the newest stuff released). I bought this CD for the first time a couple of weeks ago as I didn't even know it existed! This CD is beyond AWESOME! It is SO reminiscent of the "old style" yet is modernized. I felt like I was back in my little girl bedroom playing all the LPs again! What a great purchase! For all you true ORB fans from the "old days", you will really appreciate this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Oaks StillGotit
I love to here the oak ridge boys and this Cd out does there 4-0 out of 5 stars Back To The Basics
As the title of my review says this cd has the Oaks getting back to what made them so fresh and exciting when they crossed over to country from gospel in 1977. Their vocals are more up front in the mix than some of theprevious releases. The instruments are more country flavored than they'vebeen for some time. Baby When Your Heart Breaks Down is an upbeat song withana capella chorus. Where The Sun Always Shines is a poetic ballad whichshowcases Duane Allen's smooth lead voice. Deep In Louisiana is a mid-tempocajun flavored song. Lady My Love is a Golden vocal that fits his voice andstyle to a "t". What'll I Do is another mid-tempo song that isstandard Oaks fare. Perfect Love gives Joe a chance to step up to theplate. He laments in the song about letting quality women pass by lookingfor the "perfect love", which ultimately backfires on him. Ain'tNo Short Way Home is an upbeat kickin' song that takes advantage of allfour vocalists in the chorus. Richard's rumbling Bass voice gets a lead onIf All I Had Left. Anyone who likes the Oaks or miss the country music ofthe late 70's should find this to be a refreshing recording. ... Read more
