Editorial Review

If these truly gorgeous lullabies and songs from all over the world don't soothe the savage beast within your child, nothing will. This hypnotic collection of soft and slow melodies--some ancient, some new--is perfect for lulling a child to sleep or for any evening when you want to escape into a warm bath with candles. Carlos Santana accompanies African singer Angelique Kidjo on the sweet opener, "Naima." Claudia Martinez sings "Arriba Del Cielo (Above theSky)," a lilting traditional lullaby with roots in the Mexican state ofGuerrero. The Letterstick Band, from the small An-Barra clan of Australian Aborigines, performs the moving "Yi-Rrana (Sunset)." One favorite is "Lá Vai Alguém (There Goes Someone)," a hot-summer-night-sounding lullaby sung in velvety tones by Virginia Rosa. Another lovely addition is Kanji Yano of the Sanshin Café Orchestra playing a generations-old lullaby on a traditional stringed instrument from Okinawa called the sanshin. The liner notes, written in English, Spanish, French, and Dutch, provide kid-friendly facts about the countries of origin. A portion of the proceeds are donated to the Putumayo Cross-Cultural Initiative, a non-profit organization that uses the power of world music and the arts to inspire children to connect with diverse cultures. 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, complex, soothing
This is not your typical "baby music" CD, watered down melodies with sterilized syncopation and minimal instruments. These are luscious, rich, harmonic, melodic songs that my 16 month old twins have loved since they were born. Now, they wait for me to turn it on before naptime and start swaying to the music before it even starts.Mom and Dad never tire of listening to it - an important consideration as it will become a favorite in the nursery! The a capella voices are heavenly. There are male and female artists on the album, and the use of all kinds of interesting instruments from different cultures. We use it for daytime naps - I put the CD player on shuffle/repeat and get a couple of hours peace and quiet.Often I turn the nursery monitor up, just so I can hear the music myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful music
I play this CD for my kids as they fall asleep every night. They love it and so do I. Beautiful music; each piece sounds unique but they all blend very well. The fact that most are not in English makes it even more restful...the lyrics are just another part of the music: abstract and beautiful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love this CD
We received this as a baby gift a year ago, and it is easily my favorite lullaby CD. Lovely selections from around the world. I'm not sure who finds it more soothing ... my baby or me! It is now one of my top picks when I purchase baby gifts for friends. ... Read more

For centuries the world over, mothers (and fathers) have been cradling, cooing, and crooning to babies and small children with song. There's scarcely a one of us that cannot recall a particularly gentle song a special someone sang for a wee self--to calm, soothe, and aid slumber. This tender music is to the soul what mother's milk is to the body, and we call it the lullaby. Rooted in age-old tradition, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More than a Lullaby CD
I recently went through at home hospice care with a loved one. We listened to this album over and over through that trying time.He died with it playing. The mood of the music was very healing and spiritual.I listen to it now and remember him. These songs and artists help heal grief, not just soothe temporary restlessness."All the Pretty Little Horses" is my favorite but the entire album is quite beautiful.I highly recommend it for grief work as well as bedtime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby falls asleep by 5th song!
Beautiful and calming music for babies to sleep by!Our son is 3 1/2 months old and has been listening to this CD as he goes to sleep for a month now. He's eyes start to close by the 2nd song and tends to be firmly asleep by the 5th. The spanish song gets a tad louder than everything else, but it never seems to disturb him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who Needs a Baby to Enjoy This Music?
I've enjoyed this cd for several years now. If the day has been particularly stressful, I find it easy to unwind by listening to this beautiful and restful music. The selected lullabies reflect ethnic diversity beginning with the haunting "Swedish Lullaby" by Libiana, to the Spanish "A La Nanita Nana" by Tish Hinojosa, to the African "Be Still My Child" by Ladysmith Black Mambazo. It's comforting to realize that in every culture in our too aggressive, troubled world, caring parents soothe their children to sleep with beautiful music. All of these songs are found on individual albums but are seamlessly brought together in this thoughtful compilation. There are a lot of lullaby cds to choose from, but this one will entertain adults as well as babies. I recently ordered it again to include in a baby shower gift. Exhausted new parents need rest too! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You won't get tired of this CD
Our 14 month old granddaughter, whom we've been raising since she was born, has been listening to this CD for close to a year, it seems like.We have other CDs that we've purchased, but this is by far the VERY BEST one of them all.Accordingly, she (and we) enjoy listening nearly 100% of the time.I've not heard a lullaby CD that is so soothing and enjoyable to listen to as this one. This is a MUST HAVE.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for that cranky child
We've tried other lullaby CDs, but this one is the "real deal" for helping to put a kid to sleep. It's from Disney, and if you've ever visited Disney World and appreciated their "attention to perfection", it's certainly reflected here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the BEST lullaby album out there!
Yes, this lullaby album ACTUALLY WORKS! At least as far as MY son is concerned. I have about six different "lullaby" albums, but this CD is the only one that really helps when he's tired and fussy but refuses to fall asleep. The songs are soft and subdued, and the instruments used are appropriate for "sleepy time" music. As opposed to some other "lullaby" albums that don't seem very soothing at all (and generally don't work), because the beats are too sharp and the instruments make harsh, startling noises that can actually WAKE a baby. This is the only lullaby album that I actually use regularly, and highly recommend to all parents! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Flying into Broadway Soon...
Now well established in London, this Cameron Mackintosh produced musical is soon to land on Broadway. So is it worth seeing? And is this worth buying?
5-0 out of 5 stars Mary Poppins is Super-cali-fragi-listic-expi-ali-docious !!!
I heard the Mary Poppins was making it's way to Broadway and taking over the Lion King's theater (The Lion King is moving to another theater, not closing) I knew it had to be amazing so I bought the cast album and I am extremly happy with my purchase.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mary Poppins is PERFECT!
I am a a huge broadway fan so when I heard the Mary Poppins was making it's way to the Great White Way I knew I had to hear it.When I did I was completly blown away! Not only are all of the old and beloved songs there and complete the are a host of all new ones that still hold up the magic of the show.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not exellent.
Okay, i saw this at the library, picked it up, and copied some songs on my Windows Media Player. It's hillarious hearing the Kidz Bop kids trying to sing a song that was originally by a frog (Axel F). But their version of 'Pon De Replay' was really bad, but i like "Listen To Your Heart', i'll just look for the original songs on the Windows Media guide (I own Axel F). So please save your money and buy CDs by the original artists.(Crazy Frog, Gorillaz, etc.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Is there a -100 rating?!
AAAHHHHH!!! This CD is horrible. I dont even own it, but downloaded copies are enough of a headache for me. This CD is just horrible, every song on here they single handedly killed.

4-0 out of 5 stars awesome soundtrack to an awesome movie, but POOR remakes...
the movie is timeless and the soundtrack/score for it goes as follows. none the less, i will deduct a whole star for the second disk entirely. i know disney wants to make more money (and they have every right to), but some of the newer artists have butchered these songs entirely. stick with the original, you won't be disappointed..

3-0 out of 5 stars great first cd, not so great second cd.
The Little Mermaid is my absolute favorite Disney movie of all time. But lately I've become very disappointed because Disney insists on including music videos in a lot of the rereleases of classics with some random Disney Channel actor singing the songs. I understand that a lot of songs out now are remakes, but these are just bad except for Jessica Simpson's version of "Part of Your World", but Ashley Tisdale's version of "kiss the girl" is annoying. ... The Bacon Brothers say it best on this hilarious CD's titletrack: "Poultry in motion is a beautiful thing." So is a record that grabs you by the funnybone from its opening (the Seldom Herd's "Cows") and doesn't let go till the final note is clucked. Sandra Boynton, whose illustrated board books have become as much a part of everytoddler's reading list as Mother Goose, makes a convincing case herethat authors can succeed brilliantly as very silly songwriters. MerylStreep, Laura Linney, Kevin Kline, Natasha Richardson, and fourteen otherperformers all qualify as contenders for king and queen of the coop, and they whoop it up enough to guarantee the most enjoyable sing-along ever. It benefits a great cause (preschool education for all American children), its star-studded lineup makes you want to have a listen regardless of your station in life (college kid, mother of quintuplets), and its stylishly askew songs are masterfully sequenced (Dixie Chicks chug into Madonna, Jack Johnson gives way to Moby), so that each track comes across a pleasant surprise. 2-0 out of 5 stars If you are looking for upbeat music for your child...this cd is not for you!
My 3yr son loves to sing and dance!I loved the title of this cd and most of the artists. However i was disappointed when i actually listened to it.There is really nothing upbeat about any part of this cd.In my option, i think an adult would enjoy it more than a child. Most of the songs are slow, which my 3yr old lost interest in very quickly!I was looking for classic, fun, easy to sing and dance to music and this was just not it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible and Scary
Me, my husband and my daugther all HATED this CD.The artist line-up seemed so good, but the very creepy & morose first track, "Pure Imagination" only led to further disappointments as the CD progressed. The only track worth listening to was the "Rainbow Connection" by the Dixie Chicks, but it really wasn't worth skipping through all of the other heavy and uninspired tracks.I wasted my money on this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars still great 6 years later
I bought the "Mozart Effect" CD and a few other classical CD's; Bach and another Mozart after my daughter was born in late 1998. We had a difficult time getting her to sleep at night and decided to try playing music to soothe her.The "Mozart Effect" CD worked every time.As soon as she heard the Toy Symphony play she would relax and just listen to the music until she fell asleep. It's been more than a year since we played the CD, and recently when she was ill, she asked to listen to "her music".It still has the same calming effect.Regardless of the controversy surrounding Mozart's ability to make babies more intelligent, I think this music is very comforting and enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful CD
I received several classical music CD's as gifts before my daughter was born, and out of all of them (also including classical CD's I had already owned) this is definitely my favorite. It stands out because it is not full of simply "traditional" arrangements but rather is very light and playful - there are all sorts of cute little chirping and whirring noises that add to it as well.It is just a lot of fun, and provides the perfect background for cuddling with your new little one.4-0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised-
The Mozart Effect - Music for Babiesis a pretty good disc. Admittedly not the best Mozart recordings around, but then my child is not exactly picky. I prefer Genie's Angels All Around as a lullaby CD but either The Mozart Effect or Angels All Around would make excellent baby shower gifts. ... Read more

Dust off your blue suede shoes and polish up the tail fins on the Chevy: this album transports listeners back to the 1950s and early 1960s with all-time classic rock & roll. Children will love the strong rhythms, (sometimes) silly words, and easy-to-follow vocals. Adults will enjoy the cruise down memory lane with megahits like "Rock Around the Clock," "Willie & the Hand Jive," "Rockin' Robin," and "Name Game." Retaining all the spunk and sparkle they did when rock was young, these digitally remastered tunes are ready to inspire a whole new generation of little boppers. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A really cute show
This is a fantastic score, and though the original cast recording may be more authentic/true to the Peanuts cartoon, a clearer sound and a bigger orchestra does nothing but good for this CD. Anthony Rapp is a fantastic charlie brown and shows his distress perfectly. the song that was written for kristin chenoweth is laugh-out-loud funny and a great addition.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Broadway show for families
As a long-time Broadway junkie, I've made it my mission to introduce my 2 young daughters to as many age-appropriate musicals as possible.Charlie Brown is fun with a basic, life-affirming message without being sugary and melodramatic. The multicultural casting on this version was a nice touch, and the cast vocals blend nicely as well as standing out on their own. It's no surprise that Kristin Chenoweth won the Tony for this performance-just listen to My New Philosophy and you'll see why.Great to hear Anthony Rapp apart from Rent, and BD Wong's My Blanket and Me is sweet and charming.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Cute Show
I recently directed a production of You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. The show is really sweet, though it is hard to make sure that it is not overly "cutzy". I like the vocalist in this updated version, though some of the modernization of the songs are overdone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great collection of songs for Halloween
I have to add my 2 cents for the scariness of this cd. My 6 year old picked this out and we listened to it in the car on a long road trip. When the cd started my almost 4 year old covered her ears and started whimpering that it scared her.I told her "they were just being silly" so that my 6 year old could still listen to her cd.The 4 year old kept her ears covered for 4 songs all while I was trying to help her see how they were acting scary to be silly. After she had listened to the whole cd once she was not longer scared of it - and in fact now has most of the shorter songs memorized and constantly walks around the house singing "I'm a mean old witch with my hat... Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha".I'm glad I persevered and helped her overcome her fear so we now as a family have a blast singing Halloween songs together throughout the day.Now if you want to avoid any of this whimpering then definitely keep this cd for at least 5 year olds.My 6 year old wasn't scared of the cd at all and she loved how several of the songs have big "Boo"s at the end and other lightly suspensful moments.

5-0 out of 5 stars My child loves this CD!
I bought this CD for my son who was 4 at the time and he loves it!We listened to it all year long.Even as a parent I enjoy this CD and find myself sometimes listening to it when I'm in the car alone. My child didn't think it was too scary.

1-0 out of 5 stars SCARY!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Relaxing & enjoyable for all age groups
I have a 4 mth old baby and both he and I enjoy music. He gets a little uptight during changes so I like to play calming music for us both. This CD offers a wide range of beautiful songs.I can see this one playing in our household for many years.

5-0 out of 5 stars We Luv, Luv, Luv This Album
I play this every night for my daughter (17 months).I often sleep in the same room with her and really look forward to playing this softly. We even keep the CD player on repeat and I still like this.Very soothing and interesting.I highly recommend this for any new parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars buy more than one!
I first purchased this cd several years ago for myself, it was a wonderful way to relax. When my son came along I put it in his room among other "kids" cds.My son, now age 9,(who won't listen to anymore "kid" cds) absolutely loves it.He has been falling asleep to this wonderful cd for the past 3 years.I loved being able to share "the world" with him through music.Recently we remodeled and unfortunately the cd was chipped! He was heartbroken... so here I am purchasing another!Soothing rhythms, soft voices, wonderful instrumentation. A cd that the entire family will love and not get tired of hearing.Even familiar lullabies are updated very nicely. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Everything about this CD, from its eye-popping cool packaging to its beautiful booklet, is wonderful, perhaps peerless. It's a study that spans 16 countries, catching paeans to childhood sleep from varied traditions. The set traverses the Cape Breton Gaelic tradition with the Rankin Family, Haiti with pop stars Boukman Eksperyans, and the African continent with music from Tonga, Algeria, and Cameroon. Despite their distances from each other, at times the songs sound quite alike. Voices might begin alone but then gather into choral size, with a reliance on wordless passages to emphasize the flow of time as sleep encroaches. In execution, the surprises are many. Algerian Houria Aïchi sounds East Indian; the Traditional Japanese Music Ensemble of New York sounds poised somewhere between a stately concert of historical court music and a touching homage to childhood; and German singer Michelle sounds pop-music ready even as she toes the line on singing a sleep-triggering song. Beyond being a great collection of international music, this is probably the most interesting mix available of cultural voices approaching the issue of children sleeping. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars so-so sounds
This CD is okay, but has a number of high-pitched, almost whiny songs that aren't very soothing. It wasn't what I was expecting out of a lullaby CD.

2-0 out of 5 stars It sure ain't heroin!
It may sound like harsh judgement but there were only two songs that intrigued me and that I could see someone using on a film score. But as a whole it really is a pretty mediocre and forgetable CD. It actually serves its purpose though as it can put you to sleep as well as any other lullaby but I was hoping for something that would serve me better as background music as I sit at this PowerBook. Bottom line: It's OK but it sure ain't Heroin!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Planet Sleeps
An excellent collection of peaceful, consoling music from around the world.Possibly if everyone experienced such music and went to sleep at ease with the world, they would wake up to a better world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great purchase
The CD was in great condition, as described, and it arrived pretty quickly after I placed my order.Thank you, I would totally purchase from this seller again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Kids and Moms too
When the kids start nagging in the car, I pop this CD in and the nags stop while the giggles and singing along start. Both my 18 MO daughter and my 3.5 year old son love it. My son loves to sing along with I"m different, Bottom of the Sea and Everybody Came and he sings "I'm different, different" all over the house on his own. I just love all of it and esp the Meow Meow song. This is great for lovers of modern rock and alternative pop. I guess you would be disappointed if you want mainstream stuff. I'd also like to recommend the Beatles Songs for Kids CD - I never would have thought that Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da would be such a hit with kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars This one is even better than the first!!
I'm so in love with this CD and so are my kids. They are 3 and 5 y.o. and we all enjoy it equally. I prefer this one to the first For the Kids because it is quirkier and less typically "children's music". My kids love to sing the song "I'm Different" and they think the telephone song is knee-slappingly hilarious. My favorite is "Starfish & Coffee". Our other favorite CD is John Lithgow's "Singin' in the Bathtub". ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Every song skipped
I was very unhappy with the CD. Every song skipped the entire cd. It is very confusing to try to listen to the ABC song when every few letters, the song skips to a later part of the alphabet. For $4, it was not worth paying to ship it back and try again.

4-0 out of 5 stars love it
My 16 month old granddaughter loves this CD.She knows a few of the songs and motions to go with them. When the music is on, she stops what she is doing and just sits and listens.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!!
This CD is great! We listen to it at home during lunch or playtime and in the car. My son is only 1 and he loves music. It has great songs, not too long, so they hold his attention. I highly recommend this CD. ... Read more
