5-0 out of 5 stars Tonight will not swing
Whoa, this is one outstanding CD and one of my favorites! This was one of Sinatra's best Reprise releases as he was still at his apex when it was recorded. The arrangements by Don Costa complement The Voice perfectly to create a perfect marriage. Sinatra was no stranger to melancholy tales of unrequited and lost love, such as "Spring Is Here" or "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry." Like those recordings, this release also features string accompaniment and a slow pace; in contrast, however, the mood here is hardly morose (for the most part). These are love songs, mostly sung directly to his lover. As such, this makes for the perfect CD to play during a romantic evening. The entire CD is exceptional from start to end, though highlights for me are, "Come Rain or Come Shine," "That's All" and the sensational "Prisoner of Love." The re-mastering has left these songs sounding flawless. As with most releases from this time period, however, the running time is only about thirty minutes. If your CD player supports repeated playing, this CD offers the perfect opportunity to use that feature. Buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars sinatra & strings
This is a great Sinatra release. Don Costa really pushed Frank on these songs, its very emotional and torch loving to say the least, This is a very underrated LP if you ask me. These early Reprise releases were classics that are somewhat ignored by the Caoitol releases of course, however dig deep folks there are tons of gems and diamond cuts on these Reprise releases. This one Don Costa arranged a beauty. Centeni!~
5-0 out of 5 stars SInatra's Sinatra
Frank Sinatra once said when asked that he thought he did best vocal work on the 1961 "Sinatra and Strings" album which teams him for the first time with legendary arranger/conductor Don Costa. It would be hard to disagree with his assessment after listening to this album of ballad masterpieces.By 1961 Frank Sinatra had been singing professionally for more than a quarter century and had mastered the art of singing the popular music ballad. The skills honed over the previous 25 years --immaculate phrasing, long, luscious notes and sheer vocal power -- are all evident in abundance in what may be the high water mark of his spectacular career. You simply will not hear better ballad singing than this. His renditions of "That's All", "I Hadn't Anyone Till You" and "Come Rain or Come Shine" are the highlights of the album and have not dimmed in brilliance nearly 45 years after they were recorded. This album is the gold standard by which all other ballad LPs/CDs should be judged. It's hard to imagine it will ever be topped. ... Editorial Review

Ray Charles's decision to cut an album of duets with then-rising jazz singer Betty Carter defines the phrase "unerring instinct." Charles responds to Carter's gorgeous voice and compelling melodic changes with some of his softest singing; you might say that this already masterful conduit of emotion got in touch with his feminine side on this 1961 date. 5-0 out of 5 stars Charles and Carter
Although a big Charles fan, I must admit that Betty Carter works on a different level, showing the difference between the genious of popular music and a great jazz-vocalist. However, this doesn't mean one should put Charles down; as he shows in the second half of the CD (without Carter), he is a brilliant singer, with a great sense for rhythm and emotion. Recomended both for jazz audience (thanks to Carter) and for Charles' fans.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!!
I think most people decided to check out this CD after they watched the movie "Ray". I however, was looking for the song "Ev'ry Time we say Goodbye" and found it on this album. It is the title track and is beautiful! As I continued listening to the CD, I found that the music of Ray Charles and Betty Carter really tickled my fancy. Not all the songs are in the same genre of "Ev'ry Time we say Goodbye", but they all have a certain something to them which I found really good. This music is easy to listen to and is truly a pleasure on the ear.

Billie Holiday (1917-59) wore gardenias, was a teenaged prostitute, did drugs, and died with a cop posted outside her hospital bed.But withher gravel-like vocals, and behind-the-beat phrasing, she was one ofthe greatest singers of the twentieth century. I agree with many of the others here that this is a great overview of Billie Holiday's recording career. There is not much to add to the comments about this marvelous collection, but I would like to add some observations and other information that Lady Day aficionados may find interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars They're The Top
This is probably my favorite jazz/pop vocal album of all time. My best friend introduced me to it years ago, and I am overjoyed to see it properly reissued, complete, at long last. There's something magical in the way that Ella's elegance and Armstrong's robust humor combine to produce music of such overwhelming warmth and sophistication. When you hear Armstrong sing the deliciously quaint and suggestive verse to "Let's Do It," all about the little bluebell in the dell, and the little blue bird ("boid" in New Orleanian), and the little blue clerk, marrying Cole Porter's arch '30s wit to his own much deeper knowledge of human need, you will be won over forever.Likewise Fitzgerald's treatment of even the most mundane lyric -- as in "Don't Be That Way" -- makes it seem like pure gold, AND the most natural advice in the world.5-0 out of 5 stars Music for everyone!
No matter what your musical taste, it's hard to imagine that you won't love this combination. Ella & Louis are, of course, the standards by which all other jazz vocalists learn and are judged; the songs are the brightest gems from the jewel box that is the great American standard songbook; and oh, by the way, the accompanists are the redoubtable Oscar Peterson trio. Just the best in the biz, that's all. If you're a jazz aficionado, you'll find a wealth to love and appreciate; if you're a casual listener, count on it!...This is music that'll just make you happy. Get it and enjoy it for the rest of your life. ... Read more

Profoundly moving without being maudlin. A must have for any Sinatra fan over 45 years of age. Sit back and relax; Sinatra at his best!

5-0 out of 5 stars It isn't just for the ones who heard it in 1965
This will last forever. The years of Frank Sinatra have gone the way of the years of small town girls and soft summer nights - but they are equally worth remembering. To say Frank Sinatra was the greatest interperative artist in the history of music still doesn't get the point across. Francis Albert Sinatra was THE entertainer of all time. I like Bing, Ella, Tony Bennett, Billie Holliday, ect., and I do my very best (to no avail) to understand how certain people can enjoy listening to Elvis and the Beatles, but there simply is no equal in singing a song without artificial theatricals (Streisand), a belting, blaring lack of subtlety and taste(Bobby Darin) and plain-old boredom-inducing blandness(Andy Williams, anyone?).
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Sinatra
Frank Sinatra's later recordings cannot match the wistful brilliance of this 1965 album. "September of My Years" has only improved with age -- thanks to Sinatra's effortless commitment and Gordon Jenkins' beautiful arrangements. The Chairman of the Board rarely sounded better. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not so much accent as intonation - still lovely music
A clarification, for those who think: 'I can't ABIDE bad accents!' What people are commenting on in these reviews may be described better as a less subtle or legato phrasing than his English style, tending to over-separate words and overemphasize consonants. In listening to these songs, I don't hear any words that are 'mispronounced' by most people's standards; there simply is an overall impression of a vaguely 'foreign' sound.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nat en Espanol
I remember as a kid living in Colombia when this album came out. Some of the songs were current at the time and several others were old Latin American classics. Nevertheless, what made this album so great was Nat "King" Cole's terrific voice and his phonetic Spanish with a very heavy American English accent, which made it that much appealing. Every song was beautifully rendered. Great memories from a bygone era!

5-0 out of 5 stars MIS MEJORES CANCIONES
In the late 50's, Nat King Cole released two LP's, where he sings in perfect Spanish (With a slight accent of course), something that amazed all his fans world-wide. The songs contained in this CD, are the most popular ones and originate mostly from Mexico. Tracks like 'Las Mananitas' and 'Maria Elena' are considered as part of Mexico's folkloric history, having been written in the early 20th Century. To stun his fans even further, he also released another LP, where he sings in perfect French. For those who are bi-lingual, this CD is a must for their collection. The songs are beautiful, and the way Nat sings, will make any ladies toes curl upwards. ... Read more

I missed this one in 2004, and as stated in my recent review of "Blues in the Night", I knew I had to get to this one after listening to that one.
4-0 out of 5 stars Simply Divine
Of all the currently reigning jazz divas--Bentyne, Allyson, Sutton (Krall and Monheit may have an edge in popularity but not in chops)--Callaway is blessed with the most impressive instrument, it seems to me--one that even summons up the memory of the Divine One, Sarah Vaughan. The fact that one of her albums is a tribute not to Sarah but to Ella is testimony to the technique she possesses in addition to that sumptuous voice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Emotionally moving, and tenderly sung...
Ann Hampton Calloway has a flair for singing a phrase with almost a painful, aching skill; she goes to your heart.I received this CD for Christmas from my daughter since she knew I had another of hers, but I absolutely love driving along the highway, listening to this CD, surrounded by such a beautiful, trained and controlled voice!Buy this CD if you are a romantic, and play it for someone you love. It's wonderful! ... Like Bing Crosby's "White Christmas," Nat Cole's "The Christmas Song" stands as one of two or three pillars of holiday music. This collection of songs and greetings includes another technologically induced daughter-father duet on Mel Torme's classic hit as well daddy Cole's 1961 version of the tune. Fans of both Natalie and her dad will put this on the top of their wish lists. Two previously unreleased tracks--"God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman" and "O Come All Ye Faithful"--will prompt a lot of lovers of Christmas music to fall in love again with Cole's incomparable style and timeless voice. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Christmas Album Available!
Look at the title of my review. Enough said.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Christmas Song
Vast majority of the songs were superb, however, I was bothered by the "Toys for Tots" song near the end of the track-----while Toys for Tots is an excellent program, singing about it-----and the U. S. Marines----doesn't "fit" with the Christmas spirit IMHO.

5-0 out of 5 stars A heartfelt holiday wish from one of the greats.
Singing traditional Christmas songs with dignity and feeling, this Nat King Cole holiday album gloriously captures the spirit of the season. Without fireworks, improvisations, catchy rhythms, or unusual variations, Cole gives us songs full of love in his relaxed and unpretentious style. Accompanied by two orchestras and choruses, which are directed by Ralph Carmichael, Cole still manages to keep his style simple and the songs "clean," sometimes slowing the lyrics in order to make them more expressive of the meaning.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential, perhaps, but hardly adequate
Brubeck's greatest popularity occurred during his association with Columbia Records, and this collection certainly documents some of the commercial and artistic highlights ofthis productive period.Particularlyheartening is the inclusion of three tracks from the "Brubeck Plays Brubeck" solo piano album, including his exceptional improvisation on "In Your Own Sweet Way," an original that subsequently became a jazz standard.Still, this sampler does not include enough of the early work to dispell three widely held misconceptions: 1. that Brubeck and Desmond (or Brubeck and any other soloist) would regain the extraordinary chemistry of the 1950's quartet; 2. that the studio sessions, beginning with "Time Out," were equal if not superior to the earlier college concert dates; 3. that Brubeck's later experiments with time signatures represented an advance over his earlier adventurousness with melody, harmony, meter.
5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular collection of Brubeck's work - definitely worth checking out for a Jazz newbie
I used to have an older Dave Brubeck Greatest Hits package, but it came out in 1966.Brubeck started in the 50's I believe, and is still out there touring and making records in the 21st centry.Amazing given that man's age.But it's the longevity that made me want this package.
4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to an entire world.
I am the sort of person that likes and appreciates all sorts of music, but doesn't know much about any particular genre.I purchased this album in hopes of expanding my modest jazz collection, and I have been very pleased. It contained just enough of the known to make the introduction of the unknown quite enjoyable. The recordings are a representative sample of various periods in Brubeck's career, providing the listener with a diverse collection of complex, high-quality music. The tracks (particularly the newer recordings) have a full, rich sound, and the cd comes with an informative booklet that helped me know more about Brubeck and jazz in general.I have given this collection four stars because (as a collection, and not a true album) it is only natural that not every song from every era appeals equally, but I suspect that both jazz lovers and jazz novices (like me) will enjoy these discs. ... This is such a wonderful CD.I was actually searching another artist when I discovered Nina Simone. After listening to a few music samples, I was intrigued enough to purchase it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nina's Blues...
I have always loved Nina Simone's voice and have always thought she made great choices when choosing what songs to cover, and this CD is no exception. As a fan of the blues, I couldn't wait to hear this and I wasn't disappointed. She rocks "The Pusher", and turns Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" into a spiritual. The live version of "Gin House Blues" is incredibly infectious and I keep hitting repeat once its over. This CD is full of gems. Anyone who is a fan of the blues or Nina Simone should own this; no one can sing the blues the way she did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Luscious, sexy and sincere
Wow! Will this woman's voice move you! I love and appreciate her deep voice, raw emotions and understated sexy lyrics. This is not an "in your face" sexy either. It is so much more.I dedicated a few of her songs to my husband stationed in Afghanistan and he was flabergasted and intrigued. He can't wait to learn more about her music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful music
She has a beautiful, crystal clear voice that is almost haunting.I don't have much experience with Jane Monheit so I can't compare this to her other work, but this CD is one of my favorites in my collection. I also recommend "The Season," which is Jane's CD of Christmas music - another of my favorites.

3-0 out of 5 stars No surprises, but a decent intro to Monheit.
If you are unfamiliar w/ Jane Monheit, this isn't a bad disk to get.The songs are fairly characteristic of her music. It's chill and still fun, but not especially deep.Really, I don't think these are her very best. Her live performances are much more enjoyable, but this collection is good for giving a solid cross-section of her music. For example, "Waters of March" has a good vibe and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" takes a very mellow approach, showing a bit of her range.I can only recommend it to people on that basis. If you want some mellow, easy vocal jazz and don't own any of Monheit's stuff, this is a pretty good CD. Personally, I think Diana Krall would be better to add to a growing collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pentimento
That's Italian for I changed my mind. I like Jane Monheit very much.I have nearly every album, and "The Very Best of Jane Monheit" offers a good selection of her songs, but I previously dissed this collection for not being my favorite versions of each song.. I have listened to this album, and I enjoy it even though these are just not necessarily my favorite renditions. For one thing, there is an above average (for Jane) amount of scatting. I like when she does that and wish there were more of it on all her albums. For another, This must be her fourth album with "Over the Rainbow" on it! I prefer the version on the "Live at the Rainbow Room" album.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great re-encounter
I first heard Kenny Rankin's "Haven't we met" in a radio station WFM in Mexico City back in 1986, and I was overwhelmed by his unusual voice and skill on the guitar. Today, I heard this song again in another radio station, and decided to look up for his material. This has been indeed a warm re-encounter with his music.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Will Love This CD
I first heard Kenny Rankin on WNEW-FM 102.7 circa 1967. He is one of the most talented people in the music business. For those of you who remember Johnny Carson, you might be interested to know that he was a guest on that program more than anyone else during Carson's career. Listen to the samples. The greatest compliment is Paul McCartney's: he invited Kenny to his induction the the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" because "No one performs Blackbird better than you."His Beatle cover versions are not to be missed!

5-0 out of 5 stars What's missing?
This is a superb mix of his best stuff with some notable exceptions. Kenny did a Little David release with Don Costa's sensational arrangements where Sunny Get's Blue and Here's That Rainy Day take on a life of their own. I have no idea why they were left out here, but this one's worth having on it's own merits. But, you have not heard all of Kenny until you get his "Kenny Rankin Album." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great forgotten singer
Johnny Hartman has an exceptional voice quality that litterally ranges from tenor to bass. He is known as a baritone but his smooth resonant bass is something better known singers such as frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Tonny Bennet, Vic Damone, and many others are lacking. Therefore based on range, ability to sing from loud to soft, Hartman is superior. He also has great breath control,I can't hear any annoying breaths after holding notes, which is amazing considering he smoked so many cigarettes. He always seems to sing with perfect pitch and can sing many styles of music with a resonating baritone. The stacato jazz is a waste of his talent; he is better with poignant ballads which show his true melodious lyrical presence and at times almost operatic sound. He can sing the songs of Frank Sinatra with more power to his voice and certainly more resonance. He also sings on key better than Sinatra and has a much broader range. It is a shame he hasn't received accolaides or praise for being one of the great popular singers of the 20th century.

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest male voice of his time
This isn't necessarily a review on this disc, although it is great, as much as it is Johnny Hartman's entire body of work. His voice is unlike any other. No one, not even Frank, could turn a phrase like Johnny. It's so sad that he never really received his due while alive. He should've been as big as Sinatra or Nat King Cole. I advise picking up anything you can get your hands on by Hartman. His album w/ Coltrane is a good place to start. After listening to that though you'll find yourself admiring the voice and wanting to hear more of it. Get any of the Impulse recordings and this double disc set. They're all great!

5-0 out of 5 stars New to Me...But what a Treasure...
As I am learning to appreciate more and more diversity in musical selections, from pop to opera, Johnny Hartman comes across as a melodic genius....every one who loves beautiful smooth classics will love Mr. Hartman! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars When you have had too many kiddie tunes ...
This is a refreshing change from the typical children's fare. A really nice compromise, upbeat songs kids love and that won't cause Mom and Dad to loose their minds after the third playing.I actually really like it and would listen to it without my daughter.

2-0 out of 5 stars Was he only kid-ding?
The concept here is familiar childhood favourites of Connick's gussied up in new, sometimes wildly eccentric arrangements. On the plus side, it means you'll give a new ear to these oft-heard nuggets. On the minus side, only the most musically precocious child is likely to enjoy these versions...they're simply too far afield from what the tunes "sound like" for kids to key into. For the adults, the arrangements only occasionally really hit home. Too often, they're inventive but not a good fit for the songs they recast.
5-0 out of 5 stars I Am Glad Harry Heard Those Songs!
If he didn't hear them, we might not have such an album to enjoy! This album is great for kids too.The Jitterbug, Oompa Loompa, and Merry Old Land Of Oz are really fun, but that's not all. This album has a lot to offer. If you like Harry Connick Jr. but don't have any of his music yet, consider this one and the fun factor that goes along with it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Words...
This collection of recordings from 1962 is on par with Vaughan's After Hours...And probably even surpasses that stellar recording.Vaughan is in extremely fine voice. Her control and restraint create an intoxicating and sophisticated atmosphere. The musical accompaniment is purposely understated and the interplay between the Divine One and her musicians is masterful. This collection has been out of circulation for a long time. This is one you want to snatch up.I would include this in my top 20 vocal recordings of all time. dd ... The had many song that are classic I never get tried of hearing them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful!!
This complilation of music with the various artists on this one CD is great. The choices of the songs in this order seems to flow very smoothly. I recommend the other volumes 1,3 and 4 to complete the set.I have been searching for more in this style but no other can match this Smooth Jazz set. This is a wise investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Music For the Soul Who Is Learning to Fly
Michael Franks was first introduced to me in 1986 by my girlfriend at the time. I immediately took to his style; cool, hip, understated, and yet incredibly powerful...just the way "true jazz" should be.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Sound of A Legend
Why this music never really took off is beyond me.Sure I HATED it the first time I played it.The copy I had borrowed was ancient...A CD that probably cost over $30 when originally purchased, that had the smooth top and bottom as opposed to the ridged one, the CD, all metal, and no barcode whatsoever, made the packaging look completely different than that of now.It was sort of bewildering, seeing as at the time I was only 14.A year passed, and a friend of mine's father had passed away.He burned virtually every CD he had ever owned, which was most likely thousands.I tookmost if not all of his copied inventory...idiot me, there had to be hundreds more that i could have savored. But in the fold,I got Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Led Zeppelin I, Sting's Ten Summoner's Tales, and by mistake, Michael Franks' Art of Tea.I remembered the old musty CD I had borrowed, which had fascinated, and bewildered me.I reluctantly slid it into the DVD player. It came to life, and I didn't get the same feeling. The feeling was something of a wash, in warm chords and vocals. Not to mention Claus Ogerman strings. Was I ever impressed. The song?? Nightmoves. It had the sound of a late night jazz club, filled with smoke and mirrors. It made me sit at attention, hungry for more.It faded, and I felt the urge to repeat it, only to let it run, into the humorous and sexy Eggplant.I just kept on listening, and more and more i was affected. The one that stood out from the crowd, was "St. Elmo's Fire"I loved the title and the beautiful time changes, and string arrangements. The song is of a young couple thinking of getting together, amid a box of weed, and a rocky past relationship.I loved hearing it and knew the feeling, a few years later. This CD served as a piece in the soundtrack to my growing up.This soundtrack is peppered with all types of music. The fun part of this soundtrack is that now at 18, I find myself coming back more and more and just being floored by what touched me so deeply in my teenaged years. To find Mr. Franks, in there not once but 3 or 4 times, is a very reassuring thing, seeing as his music struck a chord by being quirky and different. His vocals, wry and playful. His piano and guitar, sweeping and simple. The music is still so great and makes me look to the future as a bright and interesting thing. Thanks to the Art of Tea, i know the legend that is Michael Franks

5-0 out of 5 stars the real thing.
this lasts.I listened to it nonstop when it came out - the 70's? - and it remained a fond memory, tucked away.a fewyears ago I picked up the CD and BOOM! top of the charts, all over again.Worth savoring again and again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My Christmas In July
During the most recent heat wave, I actually thought it might help to drag out a few of my favorite Christmas recordings and, at least, chill out mentally. It was worth a try, I suppose--not that it actually worked. In fact, all it really did for me was load Christmas anxiety on top of my already burdensome heat exhaustion.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tony Bennett Snowfall Remastered
This album has the same songs the original Snowfall had by Bennett but with different packaging and better sound. The music sounds crisper and cleaner now compared to the original one. This cd has been repackaged in a clear jewel spine case instead of the black one the other one come with. Also sony has added little snowflakes around the coverart which makes it look a lot better.I do wish they would have included Christmas in Harold Square on this cd.It is a bonus track on the playground cd by Bennett.I recommend this holiday cd by Bennett.I also recommend The Art Of Romance which is a brand
