I purchased this CD and its like nothing I have ever heard. Soft soulful sophisticated. Its in a stack of amazing artists in my cd rack next to Billie Holiday, Eva Cassidy, Ella Fitzgerald, Melody Gardot, Ray Charles, and Cole Porter.

I almost forgot Nina's ability to stir the soul and to inspire the best of self.I was treated to The Essential Nina while visiting a friend, this was the first time listening to non stop Nina in amore all of my lost and forgotten Nina music.I am again in love with the artist, her music and the messages of love and rage.

4-0 out of 5 stars Foxtrot Fun
My husband and I really enjoyed this CD. We're ballroom beginners and have trouble finding music to practice to. This CD has great songs (with singing - neither one of us cares for the "instrumental" versions of popular songs) and it allows us to practice dancing to a variety of tempi.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great collection of music!
If you are looking for a collection of standards that are by the origional artists, this is a great CD!I'm dissapointed how many collections are out there where the music is watered down versions that sound much like elevator music. This collection should definitely be apart of yours. It's great to finally be able to dance to the origionals that made the dancing popular to begin with.I should point out that this isn't a collection of greatest hits, but it shouldn't be overlooked.

Long considered a jewel in Verve Records' very impressive crown, Fitzgerald's songbook collections of various composers--a series that was started by the success of this set--are all wonderful, but her natural wit and intelligence was at its most perfect with Cole Porter's erudite, urbane songs. While not as scat-oriented as her small group outings, these Porter sets offer her most realized pop performances. Also, the gold remastering does a fine job of bringing out the nuances in the arrangements, making this a treasure for the serious collector and the casual listener alike. A true American music gem. Read more

The first Bennett album for me and I love its' stylish production. A master of the art of romantic music he is. Highly recommended if you resemble a romantic.

This album is amazing!!! Amazing!!! He must be guzzling Human Growth Hormone to sound this good at almost 80. His voice sounds wonderfully flexible and mellow. Let's hope he sings for at least another ten years.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tony Bennett - The Art of Romance - Maybe
The usual excellence from Mr. Bennett, BUT don't let the title lull you into thinking that this would be perfect for a fireside romantic moment. There quite a few songs here about broken romances and the sadness thereof. I would suggest "Perfectly Frank" as the best Tony Bennett album for romance. On a 1 to 5 scale, it's a 10! I have listened to it for the last 14 years, used it to woo my wife into marriage, and I never get tired of it. It is a treasure. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Originality
I came across this cd because of another purchase and was informed that one of the songs from that cd was originally made by Blossom Dearie (Comment Allez-Vous) and I wanted to hear the original version and enjoyed it as well and ended up enjoying the entire cd.Now I'm a big fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Have Been Hooked Since I Was A Child.....
I remember the first time I heard Blossom's voice. It was over 30 years ago, on a Saturday morning. It was love at first note.....She still makes me want to unpack my adjectives. Her voice is like fresh butter on hot bread.....It melts into every nook & cranny and is oh-so-good.
5-0 out of 5 stars The French Connection
Blossom Dearie's voice is sweet and clear. But it is her singing in French that is what makes this disk so spectacular. There is no better antidote to the grimy snarl of waiting in city traffic than to close your windows and listen to her jazzy little ditties about guys and gals in love. The band members are jazz greats but the music is understated and provides a perfect setting to showcase her voice. The pictures she conjures up of percolating coffee pots, milkman on the doorstep, cozy bungaloes, birds in spring, and love lost and found will take you back in time to a much simpler world of smoky bistros and maybe a few beatnicks. listen to this with a cup of espresso and a croissant and make believe you left town. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Better to wait for PAJAMA GAME to get a separate release
The Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of this 1954 musical sold-out every performance thanks to stellar reviews and the Broadway musical debut of Harry Connick Jr. He and co-star Kelli O'Hara add sparkle to this classic, and Connick's jazz piano riffs on "Hernando's Hideaway" are alone worth the price of the two-disc set.
4-0 out of 5 stars A fun cast album with a little bonus
I think Harry Connick Jr. attracted most people to this show and this CD. I was one of the few who bought it for Kelli O'Hara. I first became a fan of O'Hara's silverly soprano on the Light in the Piazza OBC, and the OOBC of My Life With Albertine. In The Pajama Game she takes on a new kind of role- a belty Babe Williams.I was never particularly attracted to the Pajama Game as a musical but I wanted to see what O'Hara did with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars The legacy of late Louis Armstrong
Let's face it, at the time of these recordings Satchmo's glorious trumpet was all but silent and, although his voice was still highly expressive and emotional, it has lost some of its rhythmical versatility.
5-0 out of 5 stars The one and only Satchmo
You could say he does not havea good voice. But it is a great voice. He is so filled with life, with feeling with joy .It just overflows. The playing is of course incomparable. He is one of those few greats who is universally loved.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Different Handle on Handel
This recording was given to me as a Christmas gift, and quickly became one of my all time favorites. I love Handel's Messiah, and consider it one of the all time greatest classical works ever composed for voices and instruments. That said, this contemporary interpretation is also wonderful. It features some of my favorite artists (Stevie Wonder, Take 6, Patti Austin); I especially love Tevin Campbell's "I Know My Redeemer Liveth," which never fails to move me. I not only listen to this music at Christmastime, but whenever I feel the need to be lifted and lightened.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Christmas Album
I've had this CD since it first came out, have bought and given many copies to friends (some even on cassette tape - remember those?), and play it year round. This is simply my favorite piece of Christmas music and is one of my top 5 favorite CD's of my entire music collection.I play it LOUDLY in the car and at home and have been known to break it down, measure by measure, in order to figure out the arrangements.I've performed the traditional Messiah more times than I can count and love it, yet I am delighted and astounded every time I listen to this fresh, innovative and dynamic piece of music (like I said, year round).Thank you, thank you to all the musicians, artists, engineers and technicians who put this piece together.I agree with a previous reviewer - I think Handel would be so very pleased that his work is standing the test of time.Open your mind and your ears and enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars *HEARTSWILLDANCEFORTHEJOYOFEASTER*
This recording of Handel's "Messiah" has several cuts of that great work - - Some may stand your hair on end! But remember, the album's sub-title is "A SOULFUL CELEBRATION" - - words that perfectly describe it . . . Many will choose the album for its lively cover art:

My husband and I have watched this movie over and over and we have listen to the music driving along and I'll turn to him and say "RRRRObert....you wanna F_ _ _ on the linoleum one more time"We just laugh..If you seen the movie as much as we have you will understand.Great cd. It definatly sets a mood you cannot, nor ,want to escape. Pour a brandy, sit close and the music will do the rest.

5-0 out of 5 stars all time favourite album - but put it in the vault !
I bought this album after seeing the movie( what 10 yrs ago?) We were only 30 at the time and still listening to Inxs and George Michael etc... so had never even heard of Johnny Hartman!!) Well 10 years and 3 kids later we are completely addicted to this album. My husband knows that if this is on when he gets home it will be in a very nice evening indeed.About two years ago we lost this cd - probably on a weekend away - and spent another year trying to replace it. There wasnt a single music store in Australia that had a new or second hand copy in stock. Where did they all go ?? I ended up ordering it from the U.K. - it took 3 months and cost $30 ( approx $50 us). Needless to say we have several copies of it now and continue to play it constantly. We now own various Hartman/Washington albums but the mix on this album ( plus we are big fans of Clint's) just seems to be perfect. Sublime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This is an extremely relaxing and soothing CD and especially recommended when you get home late at night and play it in a dim light. Carries your soul away. You will know what I mean when you listen to it .

It'd be hard to imagine a happier wish than the one this jazz vocal legend offers her listeners on this urbane-yet-homey collection of holiday favorites. The First Lady of Song recorded these tunes in 1960, at the peak of her interpretive powers. As such, she puts her singular stamp on everything from a sultry vamp like "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" to the sweet and cozy "The Christmas Song." Even potentially shopworn standards like "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" sound fresher when they're coming from Ella Fitzgerald. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ella Swings Through Christams And Takes You Along For The Ride
Ella is once again in great form for this set of Holiday tunes.Norman Granz, her long-time manager definitely knew what he was doing pairing Ella's outstanding vocals with great orchestrations of some very well known Christmas songs. The result was a hit from the get-go!
5-0 out of 5 stars Ella Swings With Santa and Friends
Ella is perfection. This pairing of Ella and Christmas is beyond wonderful! My parents had one of those old compilation Christmas albums from the 70's (you know, the kind you could get really cheap at hardware and tire stores around the holidays)and it had Ella's version of Sleigh Ride on it. That was my first introduction to Ella. I was hooked, and I've become a life-long fan.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Merriest
The swinging-est, happiest, merriest of all -- and I do mean all -- Christmas albums! Most remarkable is what Ella does to the traditional more solemn classics, such as "white Christmas", "The Christmas Song" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." She ups the tempo "just so" and adds just the right several ounces of jazz touch to make them upbeat and elegantly swinging. The other songs are fast swing epics. This album together with the "Rat Pack Christmas" are all you need for the season! ... Read more

New Orleans pianist, singer, and songwriter Harry Connick Jr. has done what many makers of Christmas records strive for but seldom achieve: he's made a Christmas record that sounds convincingly like a '40s period piece and rigorously like a cool, contemporary jazz disc. His powerful, self-written Christmas songs sound like polished standards, and he delivers the whole package with a sassy, vocal economy (with the occasional New Orleans accent) and an orchestral richness that is never indulgent or overwhelming. 4-0 out of 5 stars You can do a lot worse
This is definitely not the best Christmas album money can buy.But if you are (like me) a sucker for the old jazz, big band-style Christmas crooning of yester-year, then this is definitely for you.Connick is always compared to Frank Sinatra, and that's probably how he prefers it.But on this CD he sings several songs as if they were his very own (and a couple of them are, in fact). My personal favorites on here are "O Holy Night" (what Christmas album would be complete without that one?), "Sleigh Ride," and "When My Heart Finds Christmas."I am also curious to hear his more recent Christmas release.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Great Christmas CD Has Variety
This is a way-above average Christmas CD with the songs everyone knows. They are sung very well by Connick in this disc. They are very nice, and a perfect mood-setter.Everyone ought to be happy with this Christmas album. It's not too serious, yet he sings it well. The style changes with each song, but it is never too overwrought. He sings the whole disc very well. There are enough changes to occupy all listeners. He sings it well and it sounds good like it should. It has a little jazz, a little rock'n'roll, and a little classical, and it never seems bothersome and overdone. He sings it without too much overbloatedness like Whitney Houston, and without the overemphasis of Mariah Carey. This CD is elegant and unique in design.

4-0 out of 5 stars Big band, big chorus, big sound.
A different sort of Christmas album, Harry Connick's CD features the big band sound, strong drums throughout, large choruses in many songs--and Harry Connick. With toe-tapping rhythms and a casual, relaxed attitude prevailing, Connick presents many swingy versions of traditional songs and a number of quiet, soft ballads, accompanied by strings and chorales.Subtlety is not part of the pattern here--the music is, for the most part, bold, celebratory, and full of spirit--with the drums setting the beat and emphasizing the rhythms. The romance of the ballads is emphasized by violins and female choruses.

Louis's trumpet made my eyes close, my ears bleed, my mouth pinch. I have never heard a brighter, drier sound in my life and I have owned close to two thousand albums in 40 years. It seems hardly possible that the original master could have been that strident. Not Verve! I know trumpets can sound edgy, but...not like this. Or does every album have a stereo system where the synergy is mixed in hell.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Magic
Sometimes perfection is achieved when very different properties are brought together in ideal alignment. Such is the case here.Alone, Satchmo's voice resembles sandpaper at best.Ella has a wildly overrated voice but her tone is sweet and clear, and the emotion is always near the surface. The pairing offers a perfect point/counter-point, the two-faced nature of love if you will. What really sends the project over the top is the material itself, these are standards that became standards because they are great. Most notable of all is the restraint. While it may be a studio full of showboats, without exception the performances are straight, simple, and drenched in love.Get it and you will never forget it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A desert island disc for sure!
Two of the greatest popular musical performers of the 20th century, "Ella and Louis" together make beautiful music."Stars Fell on Alabama," "Cheek to Cheek," "A Foggy Day," "Can't We Be Friends?," "They Can't Take That Away From Me," "Under a Blanket of Blue" - this is an unbeatable collection of pop standards.Truly a desert island disc. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best I've Heard
I purchased several swing collections previously and they all had poor quality audio - they had not been cleaned up from the original recordings. This CD is MUCH cleaner and makes for an enjoyable experience.

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but some tracks don't belong here
The main problem with this CD is the coupling of great tracks with fairly awful ones.4-0 out of 5 stars Swing Revival Met "Fabulous"-ly On RCA Big Band Set
RCA's "Fabulous Swing Collection" was released to exploit a national big band revival craze, led by groups like Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Brian Setzer's Orchestra and in full swing (pardon the pun) in 1998. That revival has cooled but this generous (19 songs, 65 minutes) set remains among the era's better one-disc compilations (all songs from RCA family labels)for now third-generation fans.Read more

Sanitize Tom Waits's vocal cords, take some of the rasp out of Dr. John's, put some muscle into Bobby Caldwell's, combine them and you'll have an approximation of the quality of Steve Tyrell's voice. Like his popular 1999 debut, Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Steve Tyrell's Standard Time
I love the sound of Steve Tyrell's voice. I do think his better CD was This Girls in Love with You, but I plan to enjoy this CD too. I have just purchased the Disney CD and I like it better.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Jazzy Delight
Steve Tyrell is a stylish, unique singer with a gravelly, charming voice, and he delivers a song in an easy, comfortable manner; there is always a touch of humor one can sense, and a merry twinkle to the interpretation. In this aspect Tyrell is a little like singer/songwriter Johnny Mercer, but perhaps their greatest similarity is that they are both one-of-a-kind talents. The songs are a great collection, standards with heavenly melodies and terrific lyrics that take one back to a simpler time; they also lend themselves well to the jazzy, big band arrangements in this recording, giving the musicians some leeway to express their artistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars if you were ever going to buy a CD for just one song...
This one is well worth it just for the cover of "Honeysuckle Rose". I can't give it a just description, but her phrasing is joyously playful, her range and pitch are both so impressive, and the overall effect, with a very tight band, brings a smile of pure delight to my face every time I listen to it.While the rest of the CD is not quite as much fun, nearly every cut is pleasure to listen to.The only cuts I tend to skip over are "Bill" (kinda boring) and "Dancing in the Dark" (too operatic to fit with the rest of the CD).

5-0 out of 5 stars Wanna fall in love?
Apparently, being an incredibly talented singer is too boring for those reared on novelty acts and bizarre, marginal voices.Perhaps if she had the voice of a drunken demon like Macy Gray or the Drano throat of Rod Stewart or the often (and strangely) barely audible whispers of the ever-present Diana Krall, then such mediocrity would satisfy some of the other reviewers here who seem to thrive on that.Does matchless beauty so threaten mere mortals that they lose the ability to even recognize the greatness before them?Judging from her work so far, Ms. Monheit is destined for legendary status.Avedon would take her picture.Warhol would paint her.The unequalled gift of this angel will eventually silence her petty detractors.
3-0 out of 5 stars 3 STARS ONLY BECAUSE I ONLY LIKED ONE SONG.
The only song that I really liked on this cd was "I won't dance".She sang this song with the fantastic Michael Buble. If they had the video of Jane Monheit and Michael Buble singing, "I won't dance", I would definitely buy it.If you have seen the video, it is really cute and they are really flirty together. If you haven't seen it, you could find it at www.janemonheit.com.The other songs are boring. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
Since I don't want to sound like a broken record (how's that for a phrase made obsolescent by the advent of compact disks?) and repeat the superlatives stated by others, I'll keep this brief. This is by far my favorite CD I own. This music is so sensational, just too marvelous for words. If you are not a fan or all you are familiar with is either the latter-year material when his voice started to go or the early years before he developed his trademark style and sound, do yourself a favor and pick up this collection. His voice was in peak form, the arrangements are stellar and the selection is unsurpassable. The Voice recorded more than 1,500 songs, many of them multiple times, so this seventy-five song set is anything but comprehensive. However, it is an excellent choice if you don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to purchase the individual studio recordings. His recordings of standards here are not only the best versions he himself recorded, they are the best versions recorded by anyone. The sound quality is also superb, which is not surprising given the fact that, by the time of these recordings, Sinatra had already been using nothing but the best studio equipment for years. Your life is not complete without Frank Sinatra.

5-0 out of 5 stars a Ring a Ding Ding
I thoroughly enjoy this collection. It really ranges from the more mellow side of Frank to the the swinging songster that we all love. The audio quality is superb, and really shines on a high performance sound system. I also love the commentary booklet that comes with it. The stories and pictures from his Rat Pack buddies are fabulous. It comes through as a total package that's well put together. Well worth the money for a piece of music history that will never fade.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best years of Sinatra's singing career...
Frank Sinatra, The Capitol Years is the most wonderful compilation of songs from an incomparable era in the career of Frank Sinatra. His choice of music, the arrangements, his voice, style and delivery are all second to none. The ballads in particular are sweet and soulful; you get the feeling Frank meant every word. A "must have" for Sinatra lovers or anyone who loves great music. ... Read more
