5-0 out of 5 stars Evocative, seductive, sensual Peggy Lee--but OH! just one CD isn't enough...
This CD is an excellent introductory sampling of the work of the great Peggy Lee. Peggy possessed such a rare talent that she was able to move people with her fantastic voice and acting for quite a few decades nonstop; and this CD is just the beginning of the proof of that.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not as Good as I Expected
My purchase was prompted by a news story about Peggy Lee.I was unfamiliar with her work, but liked what I heard during the news feature. It has been my experience that when moving into unchartered territory, "the Best of" collections are the safe bet. This may be a recording that grows on me over time, but currently I have only played the CD (in its entirety) once.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly "The Best"
Im not a big fan of "best of" collectons. I like to think that to really experience an artst you need to pick up a cd as the artist intended it to be. But this is the exeption, for one I dont even know if you can get an original album by Peggy Lee(I maybe wrong). The only one I have seen is Black Coffee. And for two, this is just good. It only has 16 songs so its not overwelming like some of those 2 disc 40 song deals can be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Tony Bennett Ever Recorded
If you look at Tony Bennett's career, you will find his recordings fall well short of his live performances. He has been compared often and favorably to Frank Sinatra, and his recordings pale especially against Sinatra's.For a given record/CD, Sinatra had a clear idea of the songs, the feel of the album and the musical texture. As noted in Will Friedwald's wonderful book, Sinatra was deeply concerned that his recordings would last.
5-0 out of 5 stars TONY BENNETT & BILL EVANS: DIAMONDS AND PLATINUM
Five Big Stars!! It's 1975. The consummate saloon singer and heir apparent to Frank Sinatra meets jazz' pre-eminent balladeer and it's most lyrical 'smoker' in a wonderful set of familiar songs, each recast as platinum and diamond jewel pieces. The liner notes say that Evans didn't regard himself as much of a singer's accompianist. Ha! One of the greatest "compers" in jazz history for some of jazz' most heralded horn men was selling himself way short. Especially if Tony Bennett wanted in on this session. Performing as a duo sets both artists' capabilities off in bold relief and makes them entirely inter-dependent, having no drum and bass to fill rhythmic space and use as a harmonic springboard. Alone, Together!
4-0 out of 5 stars Almost too sparse
While I loved the sequel to this album, I thought this one was almost too simple to be interesting.Bill's incredible piano playing is showcased much more in the second album. The same goes for Tony's great voice.I am a big Bennet fan so will enjoy this cd, but if I had to choose between the two of them I would definitely go with the second one. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars great songs and great singing, but not jazz exactly
These Tin Pan Alley songs are the primary source of the jazz standards played by bop instrumentalists; I decided to listen to them in their original settings since I've heard so many improvisations over the chord changes to them.My impression is that the original songs aren't jazz exactly. These cuts do swing at times, but mostly they come off pretty straight, square, and old-fashioned; they belong to that bygone era of American popular culture before rock and roll, to the style of Crosby and Sinatra.
4-0 out of 5 stars Ella

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
Since I discovered Ella & Louis my "musical life" has never been the same. This is the kind of music that makes me wonder how I could have lived so long without. Ella's voice is magic. All of the Best of Verve Songbooks CDs are pure magic. If you like old-fashioned jazz, and you like great voices, you should buy at least 4 or 5 of Ella and/or Louis Armstrong's CDs. Just listen to the audio samples on Amazon.com, and you will find out why, in case you don't know how great they were. These guys were fantastic artists. They should have had 500 more years to live on this planet, and make it a better place with their voices. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Perhaps best known for the hit "Send In the Clowns," Stephen Sondheim's glamorous 3/4 waltz-time musical recalls enchanted evenings, white kidskin elbow gloves, and romance of the green-eyed bittersweet and bed-hopping sort. The ruse is that these folks lead "ordinary lives": the father is widowed, remarries, and briefly rekindles a sack-side former flame; the son flirts with the maid; the child bride is cuckolded yet loves and is loved by the son; and the maid has a romp with the butler. Adapted from a mid-'50s Ingmar Bergman film, the play debuted in America in the early '70s and is set in Sweden's turn-of-the-century well-to-do society. Now remastered and heard at the dawn of the millennium, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Goregous, Glorius, Genius...Sondheim!
After a long wait, I was finally able to own A Little Night Music, and I instantly fell in love with it. Although the show is known due to the huge hit "Send in the Clowns", the entire score is grand and spectacular. This is probably Sondheim's "prettiest" score due to the constant 3/4 waltz theme. The Night Waltz overture alone pulls the listener in with the subtle strings. The orchestrations just get better as the score continues. Highlights are probably "Now/Later/Soon", which cascades into a wonderful montage, "Every Day A Little Death", "It Would Have Been Wonderful", "The Miller's Son", and, of course, the congested wonder Glynis Johns with "Send in the Clowns". A true must-have for any lover of Sondheim.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Soft Sondhiem
Like other Sondheim shows, the lyrics are fabulous. But theres no horribly dark lyrics or moods. Myabe a little hint of one in "You Must Meet My Wife" but you have to listen for it. The music is nice and soothing. Everything one would expect from a master. It is a more classical show, but a good one. I would definitly suggest this to anyone. Ballad rich, small talented cast, and a well known Sondheim gem "Send In The Clowns" is hidden here. Nothing like Sweeny Todd, but still wonderful. Favorite songs: "Now--Later--Soon" & "Praise to Women"

5-0 out of 5 stars A Musical Masterpiece.
Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, and A Little Night Music are Sondheim's masterpiece.

No offense to any of the subsequent "Freds" but Carol Burnett OWNS this role. The recording is as fresh and funny as anything being done today and this is the version musical theatre fans should have in their library.Get it.

My school did this musical last year (Spring 2005) and I had never heard of it before, so I bought both the Revial and the Original Cast Recordings.Fell in love.I was Sir Harry and loved both songs that I sang in.In my opinion, those are the two best songs in the entire musical, but then again, I'm biased.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful and Inspirational Cast Recording!
This 2-disc set is the most beautiful recording you will ever come across. The sound is perfect and it contains all of the songs from the musical, unlike the 'Highlights' CD.The singers are brilliant and they play their roles perfectly.Brian Stokes Mitchell is a wonderful and intense Coalhouse, and Peter Friedman is a beautiful voice as Tateh.Marin Mazzie and Audra McDonald co-star as Mother and Sarah, and Mark Jacoby is a inspirational and powerful Father.Lynette Perry and Jim Corti are halarious as Evelyn Nesbit and Harry Houndini. Some of the best songs on this recording are:
5-0 out of 5 stars In the Age of Sondheim, this piece stands beside his work and doesn't pale at all.
"Ragtime" utilzes so many different elements. From a compositional stand point, the music begins as does the story. We have three different classes of people and three different styles of music. As the musical proceeds and the classes begin to mingle and then clash, the music does the same thing. This is a subtle element of brilliance; most audience memebers wouldn't catch this. This piece comes as close to opera as does "Sweeney Todd". The recording includes a Orchestra Suite at the end that is so well written that it stands beautifully on it's own and doesn't sound like a last minute Overture. Each character is well defined by musical motif. The cast is outstanding with the very best singers and actors available to Broadway and Lincoln Center. Marin Mazzie sings the remarkable "Back To Before" and Audra MacDonald "Your Daddy's Hands" making them songs that will stand as monuments to theatre the way that "People" does for Streisand, "Rose's Turn" For Merman, "Hello Dolly" for Carol Channing. The musical skill of the orchestra is remarkable, whether it's the pianist, the clarinet sounding like an Eastern European standard. Or the remarkable first violin who climbes up a scale to bring a piece together at the end for a pitch so beautifully played at the top of the instrument's range. The songs themselves are spectacular; each piece develops and we do hearcharacter development themes; each repeated motif in a song has thickened and developed along with the character, so we never ever feel as though the score was written hastily. "Ragtime" is a musical that defies the old line, "Theatre in New York is Dead."

5-0 out of 5 stars Ragtime, Ragtime , Ragtime, Ragtime, Ragtime, Ragtime, Ragtime!!!!!
When I was 11 I got the oppertunity to see Ragtime on Broadway, but back then I really didn't get how deep and beautiful the score was and is.Back then I just thought it was boring and I couldn't wait to leave so I could be that much closer to seeing the Lion King (Which is also an amazing musical, but anyway).

4-0 out of 5 stars About as much Andy Williams as one needs
Being a Sinatraphile, I don't often like to venture into the domain of other "Easy Listening" singers; I generally stick with the best. However, every now and then I pop in something different just for the sake of variety. If nothing else, it makes me appreciate Sinatra that much more. But I digress. Williams has a very smooth, pleasant voice. He's not offensive, his voice is distinctive, and he has sung some good songs. Besides, he was a friend and supporter of Bobby Kennedy, so he must be a halfway decent guy. This collection is pretty solid: his signature song, "Moon River," is here; "Can't Get Used to Losing You" is a damn fine, catchy tune; "Dear Heart" and "Days of Wine and Roses" are also quite good, though my favorite song on this collection is the beautiful "Emily."There are some standards and a couple I could do without, but overall I would consider this a good buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars You just don't hear these songs anymore......
Listening to Andy Williams brought back lots of memories. You just don't hear these songs played on free radio anymore. Now I can listen anytime I want. Great CD!

5-0 out of 5 stars What kind of singer!
When finally you decide to make a personal list of the greatest American crooners in the past Century you must include him necessarily. His voice has a singular style and could to make a real journey from a tour de force song to the most slender song under the moonlight-

Editorial Review

For years singer-pianist Diana Krall has been bringing new lifeblood to jazz via her dual knockout talents. And while her later recordings reveal a consistently maturing artist, this 1992 debut album shows that the Nanaimo, British Columbia, native had the goods right from the get-go. In her mid-20s here, Krall sings with honesty, subtlety, and persuasion while playing the piano with head-shaking authority, both as accompanist--she offers amazing asides in between vocal phrases--and as an absolutely A-one improviser. Indeed, it is remarkable to hear her weave her gifts into a wondrous whole. Working with bass ace John Clayton and the superb drummer Jeff Hamilton, Krall presents one winner after another. "This Can't Be Love" is typical, a selection where it is all but impossible not to tap your foot. After a nicely enunciated vocal--she slides into phrases much like Sarah Vaughan--the pianist cooks in her Oscar Peterson-meets-Gene Harris style, playing hip ideas that fall easily on the ear, underwritten by her rock-solid feel for time. "As Long as I Live" is another example of Krall's ability to sing and swing a standard with a nonstop groove. "Straighten Up and Fly Right" is slower and features a deeply bluesy vocal; "I'm Just a Lucky So and So" is equally sultry. The classic ballad "Body and Soul" finds her singing with intimacy and playing with a caressing touch. A very impressive start for a very impressive artist. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong Debut
This is Diana's first release and I feel it's one of her best!, this is a swinging set of jazz vocals and some fine piano playing instrumentals. While I do enjoy her later cd's, this one has more swing to it then her later ones. If your just discovering Miss Krall make sure you add this cd to your collection!

4-0 out of 5 stars Unpretentious swing from an upstart performer...
This offering gives us Diana's first CD, from back around 1992. A mix of instrumentals and vocals, it really does swing. Her voice does not sound much like her 2003-2006 instrument, being a bit rougher around the edges. If you are a fan already, of course you will want it. If you like her more recent stuff, this demonstrates her origins. If you dislike her recent releases, this gives you another facet of a very talented woman. Mainly, this is just fun, and it makes you want to move your lips and your body and sing and dance yourself. (Even if, like me, you can't dance a step or sing a note without screwing it up.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Great CD - Club Version Not what you Expect
In regards to this album, I'm simply going to say that it is great, but I love everything Diana sings.I'm really adding this comment because I am disappointed in the "Club" version that I bought, expecting there was nothing to lose but paying a few extra dollars to buy it that way - I was wrong! The "Club" version turns out to be a "Manufactured for BMG Direct" release and it does not include the bonus track "Sunny Side of the Street" listed here.I may be wrong, but unless it was hidden somewhere in the fine print, Amazon does not reveal either of these discrepancies when placing an order for the club version and I'm not very happy about it. ... World Stars: "NANCY SINATRA Greatest Hits" with tracks of duets with Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood is a collection of pure Nancy Sinatra magic!
4-0 out of 5 stars better than her critics say she is
For starters, some say Nancy has an average voice; but her voice sounds perfectly adequate, no reason to disparage it. I'd rather listen to Nancy Sinatra any day of the year than, say, Karen Carpenter.

Cassandra Wilson is a postmodern jazz singer, aconceptualist who sees no dividing lines between genres. If her career had commenced inthe 1970s rather than the label-conscious 1990s she would have been marketedas a mainstream pop diva. Her magnificent voice and interpretive geniusmark her as a jazz singer for the ages, however. She finds her materialwherever her fancy takes her and remakes it in her own image, whether it be thecountry blues of Robert Johnson's "Come On in My Kitchen" and "Hellhound On MyTrail," the soul of Ann Peebles's "I Can't Stand the Rain," the elegant R&B ofCharles Brown's "Tell Me You'll Wait for Me," the melodic pop of Joni Mitchell's"Black Crow," and Van Morrison's "Tupelo Honey," or her own "Redbone"--and thetitle track, accompanied by steel guitarist Gib Wharton. 5-0 out of 5 stars Repeatedly unexpected. Serious jazz remakes old favorites.
Repeatedly unexpected.Spare, care-ful arrangements, each specifically formulated for each song, each matching her rich, dark alto.First and foremost, serious jazz, but also something entirely different, reflecting an eclectic song choice (e.g., Robert Johnson, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Ann Peebles, herself).Sometimes a primal awareness, but mainly a remarkable artistic sensibility. She DEMANDS attention, completely remaking even old favorites into something totally new.S:tr 2-Come on in my kitchen; tr 4-Children of the night, tr 5-Hellhound on my trail; tr 7-Sankofa; tr 10-Tupelo honey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet as Tupelo honey
Hands down one of the best covers of Tupelo Honey I've heard. For some reason this stands out as one Cassandra's best recordings to me. Great range of voice and songs in this outing.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best of the '90's
Of all of the vocal jazz albums released in the 1990's, this remains one of the best.Ms. Wilson shows tremendous range and diversity here:from a cover of "Tupelo Honey" that outdoes Van Morrison (if that's even possible), to a wonderfully evocative "Hellhound on My Trail", to "You Don't Know What Love Is". to the African-based trio in the middle of the set, it doesn't get much more eclectic than this.Yet, it's all interesting, with always interesting instrumentation.I think Cassandra Wilson falls in the mold of Billie Holiday--one with a relatively limited voice who just brings it all to the table--but with wider diversity.Very highly recommended. ... I'm an intermediate level bass player backing up a praise band at church and a company sponsored big band, but I'd never soloed or played a melody till I took a jazz class that used this book.5-0 out of 5 stars A First Class Learning Aid
This is a terrific purchase for intermediate level players. The selections are in relatively slow tempos and there is a wealth of information if you are a multi-instrumentalist. The CD recording is good and allows you tomute either the bass or piano acoompaniment as they are recorded onseparate channels. There is a recommended discography for each track. Myonly criticism is that it would be better to have the tracks recordedtwice, once with just piano, bass and drums (what you get now) and recordedagain with a lead instrument playing the notated themes in the suppliedbooklet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Effort Ever
Streisand's best recording ever featuring the beautiful The Way We Were & Summer Me, Winter Me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Barbra Streisand: The Way We Were (1974)
In 1974, Barbra Streisand released her eighteenth album entitled, THE WAY WE WERE. For this album, Barbra had done two other things: First, she starred in the female lead, with Robert Redford, in the film of the same name. Two, she had given a few of the songs on this album to the film's soundtrack of the same name. This album is the full-length album, where the other songs on this album were not featured in the film.
5-0 out of 5 stars Quite possibly her finest album
I was amazed when I read sometime back that "The Way We Were" album was actually just a bunch of previously released non-LP singles and B-sides thrown together with some unreleased tracks and her then current #1 hit "The Way We Were."Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Who chose these?
Yeah, I know I had the chance to listen to the clips before buying, but they did not do justice to the music on this CD. If it is true that some of these were on the "Top 10 Hit List" of popular songs of the era, then I think we can not complain about the tastes of 21st Century pop music lovers. To think that kids were buying this stuff instead of the wealth of fantastic music being recorded in this era!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Twenties Are Indeed A Living Era!
I just purchased this album, and one called "Chart Toppers Of The Twenties", both by the British record label ASV Living Era. I can heartily recommend ANY Living Era album offered on Amazon. These CD's are remastered from the original 78 rpm records. That is because the record companies choose not to reissue their own masters, particularly in the United States. The copyright laws are very restrictive here. That said, the quality of these CD's are very good. I own several of the 78 rpm records of these tunes, and the transfers are quite faithful to the originals.
3-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Grumpy's Not Quite So Enthusiastic
When a fad hits, everyone hopes to grab a piece of it before it disappears. Think of all the dreadful songs that tried to ride piggyback on The Twist. While there were some fun songs, there were lots of dreadful clunkers that someone hoped would be a winner by including "Twist" in the title. Back in the 20s, when fads became a way of life, one of the biggest was the Charleston. This collection grabs a bunch of tunes with the name Charleston in the title and heaps them with other songs of that era, though certainly not dance numbers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Calypso recordings
Excellent performances of calypso songs. Would like to have more early calypso singers, such as Lord Beginner, but very good anyway.

1-0 out of 5 stars horrible!!
A major disappointment.Almost every track on this CD features a singer who obviously is sick to death of these old songs and desperate to change, improve, fix, or just plain eliminate the tunes that Cole Porter wrote.Loud, vulgar over-produced brassy nonsense reeking of the worst of 60's TV variety shows. The only exception was Night and Day, sung by Fred Astaire (probably the most underrated singer in US history). He alone seemed to really like the tunes and words that Porter wrote.I tossed this CD after one, cringing listen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Excellent
Afer seeing De-Lovely I wanted more music by Cole Porter. This item gives an excellent variety of his music by various artist Of Cole Porter's time.It seems authentic and was an excellent choice. It was quite different from the soundtrack and I recommend it to all Cole Porter fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars We're old but we remember REAL music
We are very happy with the CD and have zero fear in recommending it to anyone.Seems as tho the over 65 group who grew up with big bands and listenable lyrics will be most appreciative but a good ear and good intelligence can't help but like this. Good songs and great artists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mother of Pearl is Divine!
Bette Midler's voice has an almost shamanic power in her career-making "Rose" based on Janis Joplin's fast and hard life. Raw, potent, and sulty .... enough to put the listener into an altered state. A vocal tribute to the legendary troubled and deeply tormented Texas Rose.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gut wrenching portrayal
A gut wrenching vocal portrayal of a life engulfed in insecurities, self-doubt and low self-esteem, Bette Midler shines in the semi autobiographical songs that one could imagine Janis Joplin singing in writing.Bette's strong and powerful vocals tug at the heartstrings, bring laughter to the tip of your tongue and sorrowful moments in your heart.Hauntingly familiar yet vaguely distant, her gutsy renditions of the songs lead a lasting impression in your mind. This is a must-have for your CD collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bette Midler's moment in the sun
If Bette Midler ever gets inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame, she can call "the rose" her ticket in. Her performance in this movie, both as an actor and as a singer, reached new heights, and she has probably never been better at either. Blues and rock'n roll suit her so well you have to wonder why she didn't go this route again. High point: her version of "When a man loves a woman" which gives a well known, done-to-death classic a new spin. Midler AC fans will also bask in the light of the main theme. Ignored at the academy awards (although Bette's performance wasn't) the song did win the Golden Globe months before becoming a big radio hit.The soundtrack also earned Bette the Grammy for best female pop performance of 1980. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars More of the songs that got our parents through the war years
Agreed, this second volume of "Songs That Got Us Through WW2" is not as strong as the first effort. However this one does have the virtue of featuring the world's most popular song of the war, namely the German version of "Lili Marlene" by Marlene Dietrich.Again, the mix is of songs that actually referenced the war, such as "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," "Ration Blues" and "When My Man Comes Home," as well as those that came to have deeper meanings for the greatest generation. On this album that means catchy songs like "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe" and "Mairzy Doats."Even if most of these songs are new to your ears you will certainly find this collection representative of the times, especially if you pick up both albums.Besides, if you have never heard Jo Stafford sing, this is your chance to be introduced to one of the best singers of her generation who has pretty much been forgotten these days.
