Editorial Review

Garry Marshall's 1988 drama about a 30-year friendship between two women, one wealthy (Barbara Hershey) and the other (Bette Midler) seeking her fortune in show business, is well written (based on the novel by Iris Rainer Dart) and nicely textured in its contrast between the characters' separate destinies. When Hershey becomes ill with cancer, the film takes a predictably sentimental course, yet Marshall brings out the best in both actresses and catches some very fine drama. The film is a little too long, perhaps, but overall it is a fine experience.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack album to an unforgettable movie!!!
I am a huge fan of Bette Midler and thought her acting in this movie was sensational; I love the movie as well. All of the songs on this soundtrack album are excellent. This is a great album to have, the fact that there are only ten songs on it doesn't bother me at all (I have this album on all three formats: LP, cassette tape and CD). Every song on this soundtrack album is worth many listens, especially "Wind Beneath My Wings", which I believe is the most memorable song on here (and my most favorite song of hers). I also love "Oh Industry", with its weird sounding intro, instrumentation and lyrics. The final song, "The Friendship Theme", which closes out the album, is great as an instrumental, a piano being the only instrument played in this song. "Otto Titsling" has got to be the funny title on this album, as funny as the scene in the movie that this song is heard in. "I Know You By Heart" is excellent, with Bette dueting with David Pack. "Baby Mine" is soft and sweet with Bette's beautiful voice blending so wonderfully with the piano. "I've Still Got My Health" is fine with its jazz sound. "I Think It's Going To Rain Today" is great, too, but has a little bit of a sad sound to it. "Under the Boardwalk" is great. I heard the earlier version of it (I don't know who the vocalists were on it), but didn't like it too much. Bette's version of this song is more enjoyable with an upbeat sound; the other version was bland and too mellow. "The Glory of Love" is great to listen to as well. When Bette's character sings it at the end of the movie, it's really touching to see her raise her hand and wave to Hillary (Barbara Hershey's character) in heaven. So, for those of you who are big fans of Bette Midler, I strongly advise you to buy this movie and get the soundtrack album as well. No Bette Midler music library should be complete without this title. Get them while you can!!

... staying together trough the good and the bad. I wept for the entirety of this film. Funny thing though, it turns out I had been sitting on a tack.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic soap about lifetime friends
My best friend used to joke that I was Bette Nidler and that one day I'd be watching him die.Weirdly, it worked out that way.We both loved this film.Like the classic soaps of earlier days, they pulled you in and won you over and then

I enjoy Michael Buble' but was dismayed when I purchased Home and dropped it onto my CD player only to learn that it has 10 minutes of his great voice.Too much for so little.

This is very refreshing CD with beautiful lirycs. If you don't like this kind of music, you will still like this CD. I purchased this CD 2 days ago, and I can say, that it was worth it. The song "home" is my favourite. I close my eyes, and I feel wonderful. Thank you Michael for giving us this joy

...of what constitutes Louis' career, so it's hard for it to earn its "Essential" appellation, but still, it's hard to go wrong with this -while you're listening to it, every cut sure seems essential. Some listeners, used to recordings of more recent vintage may be shocked at how lo fi some of this is, but still, I think they'll be able to get past that...Wonderful and beautiful stuff from one of the alltime if not THE alltime, American immortals...
5-0 out of 5 stars Searching for years
This CD brought together many old favourites. The quality of the re-mastered music is far superior to my original records, audio tapes and CDs. I'm so glad I was able to find this compilation and am very happy with the purchase.I also have to congratulate AMAZON for the prompt service and ease of ordering both books and music.Your prices are comparable and in fact cheaper, even allowing for the conversion from US to Australian dollars.

All too often "Greatest Hits" collections are less than that; however, that is not the case with this fine selection, an excellent compilation of Armstrong's work in classic jazz.

1-0 out of 5 stars People please...
I bought because I thought it would have a cool cocktail sound. Wrong! It was obnoxious! I did not even get to the last song. I put it in the shredder so I would never listen to it again by accident.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Christmas collections out there...
Those with a taste for an "old-fashioned" Christmas collection, though one with the campy kick that a retro Christmas CD really should have, can do no better than Part 1 of a now-3 disc series of loungey holiday confections from the Capitol music vaults. The jingle-jangle instrumentals from the likes of Billy May and the Jackie Gleason Orchestra are pleasant if overlong, but the vocal selections are unbeatable. Nancy Wilson's buttery crooning on perhaps the most romantic holiday song ("What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?") is delicious, as are Peggy Lee's "Winter Wonderland" and Dean Martin's "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm". These discs are all worth owning, even if there's a too-soft chestnut or two amongst the treasures, and the swingin' 60's artwork is terrific.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real seasonal smash!
This was my first Ultra Lounge Series cd ever and I became very very fond of it immediately. It's really refreshing to listen to Christmas music in a jolly feelgood way like this. I mean, I love the seasonal classics as performed by such giants as Frank, Dean, Nat, Barbra or Ella, but sometimes we all need to switch to something funnier even at Christmas! I recommend all of the tracks but the ghost ones are the best, I think. When you get to them it's like being among a crowd of wild colleagues having fun at your average Seasonal party! Enjoy and cheers! @ ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Overrated Tony Award Winner
How could this musical win the Tony award having as a competitor a play like HAIR which - for many people - stands as an emblematic theatre piece of the 60's? Who remembers a tune out of this musical? On the contrary, "Aquarius", "I Got Life" or "Walking in Space" are still popular and they play all over the world. Even ZORBA and PROMISES PROMISES - both candidates for the award in the same year - have songs that are still remembered. 1776 may wake up patriotic feelings to American listeners which is quite understandable but the music and songs are old-fashioned, overrated and awfully boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Definitive and Remarkably Accurate!
1776 has become an institution, thanks to the motion picture which was made of this original Broadway show, and which starred most of the cast from the theatrical production. It gets rerun every July 4th week on some movie channel or local station!
5-0 out of 5 stars Saw this on Broadway
Saw this show, with original cast, on Broadway in '69 and it has stayed with me ever since then.Every time I listen to these songs, I laugh. The historical figures (done with some tongue-in-cheek) are highly entertaining and even better if you see the movie.I would recommend the dvd for a great, lighthearted evening, and good family entertainment. You can't miss with this one!A winner on all fronts. ... This is from the big-shot who thinks she can control a political party and tell fans what to think about issues despite being a high-school dropout. She's a good singer, but not the best. She basically needs to shut the eff up and sing.Hey, those are her words, right?

I saw the cover art for this CD and nearly dropped!HOWEVER, this is NOT the original 1973 version of this album - "One Of These Days", "Oh My Lady", "Could It Be Magic", "Flashy Lady", and "Sweet Life" were re-recorded in 1975 when this became BARRY MANILOW I and THOSE are the versions included here, just like the previous CD-incarnation.Just wanted to get that out of the way for those like me that foolishly hoped otherwise...

Editorial Review

With characteristic willfulness, Nina Simone plunged into a range of songbooks and styles between 1966 and 1973, when she recorded nine LPs for RCA. This two-disc overview demonstrates just how unpredictable and headstrong the seething songstress was during a period that was tumultuous for Simone personally and for society in general. Top 40 covers ("Mr. Bojangles," "To Love Somebody") mix with rock (Dylan's "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues," George Harrison's "Here Comes the Sun") and pop standards ("Since I Fell for You," "My Man's Gone Now"). An increasingly politicized perspective informed Simone's late-'60s work. Her friends included Black Power firebrands H. Rap Brown and Stokely Carmichael, and she made no attempt to disguise her militancy. "The King of Peace is dead. I ain't about to be nonviolent, honey!" she announces on this collection's "Martin Luther King Suite," which was recorded live one day after the civil rights leader's assassination. While a number of selections included here can also be found on RCA's two volumes of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars She Touches Your Soul...
I first heard Nina Simone in the movie "Point of No Return".. In it was Sugar In My Bowl and Here Comes the Sun. I was just blown away by how much emotion was put into each word, each note.. It's like she puts HERSELF into her singing- it's AMAZING. I am only 25, so I don't know all of the older music.. but Nina Simone really caught my attention. I can't think of any group or singer today that really captures the raw emotions in the songs like she does. I know this CD is a little costly, more than I would usually pay for a cd, but I LOVE it and I think it was well worth the price and more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite CDs of my collection
This is the set of CDs you want in the car for long rides or on the radio while puttering around the house. Her voice is like warm brandy, something to soothe you after a long day.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Artist
Nina Simone's 'I want some sugar in my bowl'is one of the greatest examples of how a song can transcend the musical element and become a political messanger, where the message becomes more thn the sum of its parts. There were better pianists that Nina Simone, and certainly prettier voices, but the selection in this CD show that there is no one with such an artistry. She basically invented what could be called the expressive bleat (with any other singer a major flaw). her cry is so direct, her sound so manly yet tender, this cd is a must. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Like I Remeber When I was Young
My father was a big fan of Broadway musicals.I remember going to see the Pajama Game and Damn Yankees in a summer stock theater in Warwick R.I. which contributed to me developing my own love for musicals in the 50's and 60's.This recording though in monaural is an excellent reproduction of the LP record my father had and I used to listen to (sans scratches!).I would recommend this to any person who used to like these old classics.I would like to see a local theater group do this some day before it's completely forgotten. The interviews with the composer/lyricist and notes in the CD were wonderful too.

4-0 out of 5 stars More is less.
A monster hit when it opened in 1954, and still a staple of community theatre groups, PAJAMA GAME has a delightfully refreshing score that never takes itself too seriously. On the whole it offers a better-than-average number of stand-out songs: "I'm Not At All in love", "Hey There", "Small talk", "Steam heat", "Hernando's Hideaway" and the ensmble "7 1/2 Cents."There are, however a few stumbles."A new Town is a Blue Town" is dreary. "Her Is" is silly although the Bob Fosse dance routine made it work on stage. Both these were dropped from the movie version, so I suspect the authors also felt this material was weak.
4-0 out of 5 stars A great recording, with the best cast, but...
"The Pajama Game" is a truly great musical. Although it's most popular songs have truly been immortalized, such as "Hernando's Hideaway" and "Hey There", the show itself seems to be sadly forgotten by many (depite winning both Best Score and Best Musical in the Tonys). It remains very popular with amateurs and high schools, though.Read more

Editorial Review

Good news: "The Man That Got Away" is not on this tribute to the Judy Garland songbook. Yes, it's an extraordinary song, but how many versions of it do we need? Apart from that absence, Linda Eder tackles many well-known nuggets long associated with Judy Garland--or as Leslie Bricusse puts it in his fawning liner notes, "Picasso Sings Rembrandt." Eder, a belter par excellence, lacks Garland's brittle vulnerability, and so she isn't at her best on songs that require a delicate touch, such as "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart." She's much more at ease on tracks like the fingersnapping "I'd Like to Hate Myself in the Morning," which also has the advantage of being fairly obscure--Garland performed it on TV in 1968 but didn't record it so her vocal pawprints aren't all over the song and Eder can put her own stamp on it, as she does on the lone new original, Jack Murphy's "The Rainbow's End." In terms of arrangements, the album sounds as if no expense was spared. The songs are split between the London Symphony Orchestra and a gang of experienced jazzbos who know how to deliver a big-band bang. That alone is enough to recommend this album--lovers of old-school orchestrations should be in heaven. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Tribute....
Someone made a genius choice by picking Linda Eder to record a tribute to Judy Garland.I am thoroughly convinced there is not a soul on this earth more perfect for the job than Ms. Eder. It's hard to describe how wonderful this album is, but it's certainly a no-brainer buy for any Judy or Linda fans.I have 7 Linda Eder cd's, and I have to say this one is my favorite with "Broadway My Way" coming in a close second.
4-0 out of 5 stars Eder Does Garland
And does it well.Few other singers would even attempt this album, let alone produce such a superb interpretation of Judy Garland's classics that is Eder's own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Linda Eder Can Do No Wrong...
Everytime I buy an album of Linda's I wonder how she manages to enchant me all over again. Her colorful voice is perfect for these songs, many of which I was not familiar. Though I love Judy Garland, I simply had not heard these songs in a repetitive fashion until this album. The first time I ever heard Linda sing, it was "Someone Like You" from the Jekyll & Hyde soundtrack. She had me then, just as she has me now. She is Linda Eder. The Voice. The Power. The Heart. She made me love her. She didn't have to do it, but she did. She'll get you too... One listen is all it takes to know that Linda Eder can do no wrong. I also recommend her Broadway, My Way and Storybook albums. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perry Como - Superb Singer, Super Songs and Superb Sound!
Perry Como is as always in superb singing voice and sounds as wonderful as ever. The songs on this collection have all been sourced from the Release Master Tapes and/or Metal Parts (not original sources like 1st Generation Master Tapes, but the next best thing!)
3-0 out of 5 stars As calm and pleasant as it gets
The old barber Perry Como had the smoothest, most relaxed voice. At times he looked as if he was falling asleep. He exuded a niceness, a sentimentality that none of his compeers could match. He didn't have Sinatra's musical brilliance, but he had a kind of quiet integrity that radiated calm and pleasantness. My own favorites among the songs include one which I believe was his last great hit , "It's Impossible" and 'Some Enchanted Evening' 'If' . I personally do not go very much for the novelty songs, of 'Hot- Diggety -Dog' type.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent retrospective of a singer who is often forgotten...
Perry Como's voice was smoother than silk while oozing masculinity and a singular tenderness all at the same time. I agree with the reviewer who writes that it IS a tragedy that many younger people today have no idea who Perry Como was or what he did. Perry brought a great deal of sunshine into many people's lives for pretty close to half a century and he deserves a world of credit for that.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Basic Collection
This is a good, basic collection of Christmas Music. As a general rule, Time-Life has selected what is probably the definative artist/arangement of each song.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality
The only good thing about this collection is the inclusion of so many Christmas standards.I was very disappointed in the quality of the recordings, they obviously need digital inhancement. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Streisand Role!
While not her first show, "Funny Girl" proved to be Barbra Streisand's ticket to immortality.Too bad she lost that year's Best Actress Tony to the equally deserving (?) Carol Channing in "Hello Dolly" ... though she ultimately won the 1968 Oscar for the film version of the classic role.
4-0 out of 5 stars Early Great Barbra
The fun of this cast album is hearing young Streisand. She still projects so much star quality in her voice, that the album is a gem. But compared to later years, when her voice has aged, improved and been somewhat trained, her singing pails. Yet it's fun to hear, even when she cracks, as in the end of Don't Rain On My Parade. Still a great score, but get the film soundtrack, Barbra's voice is much better on it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Blah
It was a good recording but i found the actual songs kinda Blah. They had no spice or spunk. . . Just kinda boring. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Lions and tigers and bears, the yellow brick road, gamboling midgets, warnings scrawled high above by a skywriting witch: No movie ever imprinted itself on young imaginations or endured in adult memory more than MGM's classic 1939 musical, and no movie score ever hooked as forcefully into our collective cultural memory. This exemplary soundtrack finally treats this deserved classic to a thoughtful and comprehensive rendering that confirms the enduring power of Harold Arlen's original music and E.Y. "Yip" Harburg's lyrics. On film, the songs unreeled as a mixture of discrete songs and multithemed medleys with frequent reprises, a presentation preserved here, epitomized in the "Munchkinland Musical Sequence." If not as concise as Bobby McFerrin's legendary, hilarious concert compression of the entire musical story, this telling of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The DEFINITIVE presentation of the music of Oz on CD.
It's been nearly 11 years since Rhino Movie Music and TCM Music teamed up to bring two editions of the awesome soundtrack from this movie to the public. One edition is a single-disc version and only contains the songs and a few bits of score. (However, it contained ALL of the songs, including outtakes and extended versions.) This is often found for around $10 and is a great buy for the casual fan or one who rarely shops online and can't find the 2-disc in a store. Although I feel more could have been included on it, it's a nice little package, especially for the kids.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome OZ!
Hello OZ fans. This is truly the best Wizard Of OZ soundtrack to date in my opinion. In October of '05 Warner Bros is releasing this classic film again on DVD. I was wondering if anybody knows if they will release another soundtrack to accompany the re-release DVD? Either way, I doubt it could compare to this excellent deluxe edition. See ya, over the rainbow!

4-0 out of 5 stars No Dialogue!!!
This is a really great CD set -- but be aware that it is ONLY the music. No dialogue. No voices unless they are sing as part of the songs (Over the Rainbow, Ding Dong the Witch is Dead, etc.). It's fun to listen to, but I was disappointed that it doesn't include the storyline. That should teach me not to take the time to listen to the audio clips before buying!! :) ... Read more

Editorial Review

This collection summarizes vocalist Dianne Reeves's greatest hits from 1987 to 2001. A stunning contralto, Reeves was one of the best jazz-based singers to emerge from the late 20th century. This disc captures her wide musical palette. Of course, her biggest hit, "Better Days" (a.k.a. "The Grandma Song"), is included here. Reeves's love of Latin music shines through on her version of Mongo Santamaria's "Afro-Blue," and her ballad artistry illuminates "You Taught My Heart to Sing." Reeve's soul-wrenching composition "Endangered Species" shows off her spiritual side, and "Testify" showcases her uplifting aura. Also included are Reeves's passionate reading of Joni Mitchell's "River" and a heartfelt version of "Misty." Both are released here for the first time in the U.S. Add keyboardists Billy Childs, Mulgrew Miller, and George Duke, and you have a complete aural portrait of Dianne Reeves. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.
To the (few) negative reviews I say, if the Best of Dianne Reeves isn't good enough, what on earth could be?She is at or near the top of my list of the best vocalists alive.I saw her at a concert in Atlanta's Piedmont Park that was rapturous.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disapointed
What a shame.Dianne Reeves may have the best voice in jazz today, but in this CD every song is over produced, arranged, and most sadly, oversung.Anyone who has listened to Ms. Reeves sing knows she has great vocal ability, but it feels like this is an attempt to see how stylized and how much vocal gymnastics she can wow us with. From the original songs (which are awful and should never be a part of the best of, to the couple of standards which again are over arranged (and over the top with vocalization), this CD was totally disapointing. You want to hear the best of Diane Reeves, get the soundtract to "Good Night and Good Luck" as this is truley an artist at the top of her vocal game with great arrangments of wonderful songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dianne Simply the Best
This CD is a must have for all those jazz lovers. ... Read more
