5-0 out of 5 stars One of Barbra's best selling albums....
This album of Barbra Streisand, Greatest Hits, Volume 2 contains ten of her well known songs from 1970-1978. The title starts off with her timeless classic "Evergreen", from "A Star is Born", and ends with "Stoney End", from the album of the same title from 1971. There are some other great songs on this album as well. Here is a brief summary of the rest of them:
5-0 out of 5 stars Barbra Streisand: Barbra Streisand's Greatest Hits Volume 2 (1978)
In November of 1978, Barbra Streisand released her twenty-fourth album entitled, BARBRA STREISAND'S GREATEST HITS VOLUME 2. This album features all of Barbra's greatest hits from 1971 to 1978, and only the best songs were chosen. Just look on below.
3-0 out of 5 stars So-so hits package, now eclipsed by other collections
For those enraptured with "Evergreen" and "The Way We Were", and who can't find the other Streisand best-of's, I would say go ahead and get this quickie collection, but don't let your Streisand shopping end here. "Superman" is a pretty but thin, head-scratching non-hit('My sweet life/has just begun/I'm in love this time and I know I have it/Fell into my life so I grabbed it/There's nothing I can do/When I'm with you'); I don't know what the song is about, or why a free-spirited, independent woman like Barbra needs a Superman to feel "easy"(must've been that Jon Peters influence). The live "Sweet Inspiration-Where You Lead" is overlong and spottily recorded. "Songbird" and "My Heart Belongs To Me"(a female-empowerment number)are both lovely but sorta bland. "Stoney End"-from 1970!-doesn't have the same smooth production and orchestration like the other songs and sticks out a bit. The strangest and rarest track here is "Prisoner"(from the inferior movie 'Eyes of Laura Mars'), a tepid Top 20 rock song that features a strong Streisand vocal but forgettable lyrics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Story Captured Through Song.
Disney's revival as a major animation studio began in 1989 with the release of THE LITTLE MERMAID and reached its pinnacle with BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (the only animated film ever nominated for a Best Picture Oscar). As much as the film is a visual delight, its also a musical feast for the ears.People had said for over a decade that the musical movie was dead, but BEAUTY AND THE BEAST proved otherwise and paved the way for later big-screen adaptations of famous stage musicals. Some of my favorite songs on the album include:
5-0 out of 5 stars My children listen to this CD over and over
My kids (5 year old boy and 2 year old girl) LOVE this soundtrack. They make me play it repeatedly in the car, EVERYTIME we go anywhere. It is word-for-word an exact replication of the movie.I highly recommend it for any Beauty and the Beast fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ashman/Menken's best of their three...
I never really cared for the Little Mermaid, but I liked the songs nevertheless. But I was more of a fan of Beauty and the Beast.I found the songs, acting, and animation a joy to watch. And it was around that time that I wanted to be a Disney Animator.

Long considered a jewel in Verve Records' very impressive crown, Fitzgerald's songbook collections of various composers--a series that was started by the success of this set--are all wonderful, but her natural wit and intelligence was at its most perfect with Cole Porter's erudite, urbane songs. While not as scat-oriented as her small group outings, these Porter sets offer her most realized pop performances. Also, the gold remastering does a fine job of bringing out the nuances in the arrangements, making this a treasure for the serious collector and the casual listener alike. A true American music gem. Read more

The first Bennett album for me and I love its' stylish production. A master of the art of romantic music he is. Highly recommended if you resemble a romantic.

This album is amazing!!! Amazing!!! He must be guzzling Human Growth Hormone to sound this good at almost 80. His voice sounds wonderfully flexible and mellow. Let's hope he sings for at least another ten years.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tony Bennett - The Art of Romance - Maybe
The usual excellence from Mr. Bennett, BUT don't let the title lull you into thinking that this would be perfect for a fireside romantic moment. There quite a few songs here about broken romances and the sadness thereof. I would suggest "Perfectly Frank" as the best Tony Bennett album for romance. On a 1 to 5 scale, it's a 10! I have listened to it for the last 14 years, used it to woo my wife into marriage, and I never get tired of it. It is a treasure. ... Read more

That's her real name and this is her real voice, as fresh and sweet asthe darling buds of May--but never cloying or precious.Fittingly, there's abright, springtime theme running through this record, which includes "ItMight as Well Be Spring," "A Fine Spring Morning," and the CDbonus track "They Say It's Spring."And since Ms. Dearie had recentlyreturned from a few years in France in 1956 when she recorded this, her firstU.S. album, there are also some Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Originality
I came across this cd because of another purchase and was informed that one of the songs from that cd was originally made by Blossom Dearie (Comment Allez-Vous) and I wanted to hear the original version and enjoyed it as well and ended up enjoying the entire cd.Now I'm a big fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Have Been Hooked Since I Was A Child.....
I remember the first time I heard Blossom's voice. It was over 30 years ago, on a Saturday morning. It was love at first note.....She still makes me want to unpack my adjectives. Her voice is like fresh butter on hot bread.....It melts into every nook & cranny and is oh-so-good.
5-0 out of 5 stars The French Connection
Blossom Dearie's voice is sweet and clear. But it is her singing in French that is what makes this disk so spectacular. There is no better antidote to the grimy snarl of waiting in city traffic than to close your windows and listen to her jazzy little ditties about guys and gals in love. The band members are jazz greats but the music is understated and provides a perfect setting to showcase her voice. The pictures she conjures up of percolating coffee pots, milkman on the doorstep, cozy bungaloes, birds in spring, and love lost and found will take you back in time to a much simpler world of smoky bistros and maybe a few beatnicks. listen to this with a cup of espresso and a croissant and make believe you left town. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, not delovely, collection
Perhaps I should have read the print on the back more closely when I bought this on a whim. I should've known what to expect from Sonny Rollins or what they meant by "period performances" (i.e,. performances in the style of a period, but not necessarily from the period). So I got what was coming to me.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's De Lovely-The Authentic Cole Porter Collection
I got chills when I heard this cd for the first time and the thrills did not stop until the last number. It had been years since I had experienced the old masters playing authentic music rather than the many remakes and retakes we have today.Does anyone today use brushes on a snare---fantastic sound. And hearing Lena Horne in her prime--an extra bonus.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely
I've always liked Cole Porter's songs, so of course I've heard them performed by many different singers. But what made this album for me was the recording of Porter himself singing "Anything Goes." Of course he doesn't have the voice of a Sinatra or a Mel Torme, but if you want to hear the definitive version of a song, you go to the composer himself, and this one is terrific. Porter sings with an urbane, knowing sophistication the others can't match, and in his own words--"God knows, anything goes," not the sanitized versions later singers used. It's fabulous, and the CD is worth the price for that track alone. But the rest of it's pretty easy on the ears too. Performances range from early jazz sounds to splashy big band arrangements to savvy vocals framed by swingy riffs. I like it better every time I listen to it. This is a worthy tribute to a great songwriter, and taken together with "The Very Best of Cole Porter" would be a great introduction to a suave, stylish kind of music that's sorely needed today, in this world of women singers groaning like cats in heat and men pumping out lyrics about bitches and hos. Let it roll--Cole's still tops. ... Read more

Curb Records has long specialized in low-budget repackagings of previously released material, and they certainly haven't gone out of their way with this 12-song Dean Martin compilation. Culled from his Capitol years, this does indeed feature some great moments--"That's Amore," "Volare," "Inamorata" and "Come Back to Sorrento" are all present and accounted for--and if you need a little Dino to spruce up a mix tape, this'll certainly do ya. I've owned this CD for over eight years now so I guess it's about time I reviewed it for Amazon. I have never let this one gather dust at the back of some shoe box in a closet somewhere. This musical is so very beautiful. The music is fantastic. Of course my favorite song is Sunrise, Sunset. I highly recommend this recording to anyone who is interested in musical theatre. You can play this CD over and over again for years to come and still enjoy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great!!!
I would give this c.d. 4 and 3/4 stars if I could. Three reasons why it is not 5 is that it doesn't include "Tevye's Monologue", "Tevye's Rebuttal", and (My most favorite song out of the show) "Chavaleh." I could live without the first two but the c.d. just seems to be missing something without "Chavaleh." But otherwise I love this c.d.

4-0 out of 5 stars My First Sondheim
This was the first Sondheim album I ever had, and I got hooked.
5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting, melancholy, life-affirming -- a work of art
Sometimes it's great not to have heard something in your youth - it makes it that much more enjoyable when you finally encounter it further down the line. I had already enjoyed Sondheim's genius work in the musicals "Sweeney Todd" and "Into the Woods" but only just heard "Company" for the first time this year. All I can say is I'll never hear the word "Barcelona" without thinking of Sondheim's gorgeous song of that name from this musical about the ups and downs of marriage and loneliness and how these states of being both mirror-reflect and contradict each other (sometimes at the same time, as Sondheim observes in the song "Sorry-Grateful").
5-0 out of 5 stars You're always sorry, you're always grateful
I actually have two recordings of Company - I bought this one for the fabulous performances of Elaine Stritch and well, everyone except Dean Jones, and the 1995 Broadway Revival Cast for the superior vocal talents of that show's Bobby and the additional song "Marry Me a Little." If you're a true Sondheim devotee, I'd get both recordings. If you only buy one recording though, this should be it.

My husband and I have watched this movie over and over and we have listen to the music driving along and I'll turn to him and say "RRRRObert....you wanna F_ _ _ on the linoleum one more time"We just laugh..If you seen the movie as much as we have you will understand.Great cd. It definatly sets a mood you cannot, nor ,want to escape. Pour a brandy, sit close and the music will do the rest.

5-0 out of 5 stars all time favourite album - but put it in the vault !
I bought this album after seeing the movie( what 10 yrs ago?) We were only 30 at the time and still listening to Inxs and George Michael etc... so had never even heard of Johnny Hartman!!) Well 10 years and 3 kids later we are completely addicted to this album. My husband knows that if this is on when he gets home it will be in a very nice evening indeed.About two years ago we lost this cd - probably on a weekend away - and spent another year trying to replace it. There wasnt a single music store in Australia that had a new or second hand copy in stock. Where did they all go ?? I ended up ordering it from the U.K. - it took 3 months and cost $30 ( approx $50 us). Needless to say we have several copies of it now and continue to play it constantly. We now own various Hartman/Washington albums but the mix on this album ( plus we are big fans of Clint's) just seems to be perfect. Sublime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This is an extremely relaxing and soothing CD and especially recommended when you get home late at night and play it in a dim light. Carries your soul away. You will know what I mean when you listen to it .

First of all, the best Italian-American album ever. Put this in the CD player, pour a glass of wine, sit by the pool, add a little salami, provolone, and tender olives, lite the porch lites out back, and you are back listening to the songs Mama and Papa sang. This CD is so good you cant stop listening to it. I am not kidding. My kids listen to it with me. Mt father-in-law and I would sit by the pool every Sunday night, sip wine and listen to Jerry...it was heaven on Earth...and I miss those nights so much...buy this CD and see for yourself...you will know exactly what I mean. I have watched Miss Saigon in its grand Broadway scale, not to mention its ambitious helicopter scene, years back and it has set the bar on my theater standards. This recording recaptures that aural experience in this epic 2-CD compilation.

Editorial Review

This was one of the best-selling Christmas records of the 1960s, and with good cause! Somehow, without the fatherly image of Bing Crosby, or the svelte croon of Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett, or even the reverent innocence of Perry Como, Andy Williams managed to make a holiday institution! This collection of Christmas songs is full of standards normally identified with other artists, but armed with an average tenor and lots of exuberance, Andy Williams made them his own. His "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" is the most exhilarating version of the song there is, and even his "White Christmas" and "O Holy Night" are more than just passable. This is not only Williams's best Christmas collection, this is one that should be in every holiday music collection. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Remastering
As much as I have always loved this performance, the flat, opaque sound of the recording has always bothered me."Kay Thompson's Jingle Bells" especially sounded as if it were compressed for AM radio. But I was always willing to live with it to hear Andy, and those great studio musicians.
5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas Classic for the Ages
I grew up listening to this album, and the familiar grin of Andy from the lower left corner of the cover brings back many memories. But, unlike many Christmas albums that make one nostalgic, this album has withstood the test of time and emerged a classic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Traditional and right!
This is THE MUST-HAVE Christmas album! It's my all-time favorite and everyone should own it!When I was a kid we played this every year while decorating the Christmas tree, and I still do it today.Doesn't get any better than this.I even listen to it when it's not Christmastime.I love everything to do with Christmas and this is part of it.Brings back so many great memories.Share this one with your family! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars If you loved the Movie -- YOU WON'T GET ADELAIDE
Sorry, I didn't get to see the Broadway show.I really loved the movie --Frank Sinatra & Stubby Kaye are spectacular.Brando can't sing, but tries to sing and dance. One of my favorite songs NOT AVAILABLE ON THE BROADWAY ALBUM is "Adelaide" ... is taking a chance on me.That was disappointing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Recording
Great recording of one of the greats. The original is now difficult to listen to due to the tinny sound and mono recording. this revival was wonderful, with a great cast and now a definitive, excellent recording. Skip the movie soundtrack.

5-0 out of 5 stars Damon Runyon was Smilling on Broadway...
Drats !I can't believe I let myself miss this revival... If the stage production was as good as the cast recording I can only say that I really hope that the chaps in Great Britain who are currently rehearsing up the latest revival are on up on their jippers (or whatever they call them) on this one... (Actually the New York dialect doesn't seem so authentic on this one... strange... guess Gulliani really did clean up Time Square...)
