Editorial Review

This 1960 recording was a landmark album in John Coltrane's career, the first to introduce his quartet with pianist McCoy Tyner and drummer Elvin Jones and the first release on which he played soprano saxophone. It also provided him with a signature hit, as his new group conception came together wonderfully on the title track. It's an extended modal reworking in 6/4 time that brought the hypnotic pulsating quality of Indian music into jazz for the first time, with Coltrane's soprano wailing over the oscillating piano chords and pulsing drums. The unusual up-tempo version of Gershwin's "Summertime" is a heated example of Coltrane's "sheets of sound" approach to conventional changes, while "But Not for Me" receives a radical harmonic makeover. This is an excellent introduction to Coltrane's work. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars JOHN COLTRANE -MY FAVORITE THINGS
A classic, I'm happy to have in my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfection in sound
The title track, "My Favorite Things" is a lovely musical journey into the mind of a master. With Coltrane re-working the theme from The Sound of Music and McCoy Tyner lending audible gold on the keys, the song is a gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Coltrane in conventional terms
Coltrane, Davis, Tyner, and Jones went into the studio for a week and came out with material for three albums."My Favorite Things" is the standards album."Coltrane's Sound" is the originals album (pretty good), and "Coltrane Plays The Blues" is the blues album.

Editorial Review

This is an excellent collection of many of the high points of the Manhattan Transfer's first decade, demonstrating both their reach and their grasp as they draw material from swing, modern jazz, and doo-wop into their own distinctive style. There's a tongue-in-cheek cool that connects the swing of Erskine Hawkins's "Tuxedo Junction" to the elemental girl-group harmonies of "Boy from New York City" and the TV themes like "Route 66" and the variations on the "Twilight Zone." More traditional jazz skills, though, are apparent in their renditions of some Jon Hendricks vocal classics. Composer Jimmy Giuffre plays saxophone on their version of his "Four Brothers," a key theme for bandleader Woody Herman, while there are also stellar renditions of Weather Report's "Birdland" and the standard "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square."It's an entertaining collection by a group that's never let itself be confined by the expected. --Read more

A true musical theater classic.Wonderful melodies that will last for years to come.
5-0 out of 5 stars "I Have Dreamed"
As an avid collector of Broadway Cast Recordings and Original Soundtracks I have dreamed for years for complete recordings (including underscoring) of soundtracks to film versions of Broadway musicals. The one advantage to soundtrack recordings of film versions of Broadway musicals is access to large studio orchestras and Hollywood's best arrangers and orchestrators. The most satisfying result of this for me is the sound of each production number. What the large studio orchestra does is mirror the visual action of the large (or small) production number. The original LP versions of these soundtracks rarely included the orchestral tracks due to space limitations.I cite one example to illustrate this point though there are many others. That example is the dance preceding the barn raising in the soundtrack to "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" included on the wonderful Rhino disc. This CD of "The King & I", along with other Angel releases, "Carousel" and "Oklahoma!" also feature generous portions of orchestral tracks. For this reason alone (though there are others)this CD is a must for any R & H fan. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Dino Christmas CD to own
I own just about every Dino/Rat Pack Christmas album they have, and I think this is the best Dean one to get. The sound quality is great, it has all the songs in one place (plus alternate versions), quotes in the liner notes, and the picture on the cover and the one inside aren't too bad, either ;) .

5-0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic masterpiece!
Whenever I think about Christmas, I inevitably began to recollect of my childhood and the fond Christmas memories that go along with it.This album, along with those by Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Andy Williams takes me back to those simple days when Christmas meant family and waking mom and dad up at 5AM to see if Santa came yet. It's like the smell of chlorine at the swimming pool every summer....it's simply memory evoking..i love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars As it had to be done...
For years, I wondered, why there was no real Holiday album by Dean Martin: The answer is that simple: Dino cut two Christmas albums, one for Capitol and one for Reprise, but each of them contained only a bunch of Christmas-related selections. So, if you really want to get a Holiday album by DM, get this one!

Editorial Review

This Clint Eastwood vanity-project was one of the biggest box office disappointments of 1997, despite a masterful performance by Kevin Spacey, Eastwood's typically subtle direction and, to these ears anyway, one of the most satisfying collections of songs gathered in service of a film in many a year. It didn't hurt that they were all penned by the late, great Johnny Mercer (a native of Savannah, GA, the film's locale and most crucial, underrated element) and with the exception of Tony Bennett's "I Wanna Be Around" and Sinatra's classic "Summer Wind," were rendered by an all-star team of jazz players (Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker, Joshua Redman, Kevin Eubanks, Christian McBride among them) and an impressive line-up of vocalists including k.d. lang, Paula Cole, Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Cassandra Wilson, Alison Krauss, Diana Krall, and Kevin Mahogany. Eastwood has long been a jazz devotee and, in recent years, eager proselytizer; this album plays like a love letter to one of his most beloved musicians and composers. Read more

I can not begin to tell you how much my girlfriend and I enjoy the music on the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.It is an incredibly beautiful experience.Even Clint Eastwood and Kevin Spacey admirably perform a couple of Johnny Mercer's less demanding songs."Skylark" by K. Lang will simply take your breath away.I am at this very moment listening to Tony Bennett's"I Wanna Be Around."This collection of songs should be on your shelf.Five stars?I wish I could give it more.

5-0 out of 5 stars A joyful, sexy sound, with look and spirit to match
I've owned this CD for so long and had to stop listening to it when a very jealous girlfriend of mine was around that I forgot to share with others how good it is.Audra McDonald is already a legendary figure on Broadway with four Tony awards, exemplifying the complete package of drama and artistry she is on stage.Yet that voice, which could just as easily have taken her to the Met as it did to the theatres downtown, is in rare expressive form on this CD tribute to Harold Arlen and others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Album, BeautifulVoice
I am most definitely an Audra McDonald fan. I saw her live recently at Linclon Center in the American Songbook Series and was blown away.
2-0 out of 5 stars Golden Ears
A Moose from California compared Audra's "Bill" with one done by Jane Monheit. I took his advise and listened to both. Audra sounds like a church choir singer making an attempt at jazz. The Moose from California has a tin ear when it comes to quality and soul. This is a sad recording as far as jazz goes. It should be in the cabaret bin. Absolutely!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Joseph... Come on!
It's interesting to note that Rice and Webber got their start in Church Musicals, and to this day Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph remain two of their most pleasing efforts, crafty worsk which generate applause from much more then their religious target audience.Of the two, I've always though Superstar was the superior, but then you really can't compare them beyond their subject matter. Both are entertaining, but Joseph is entertaining in a different way from Superstar.Where Superstar was dark, moody, controversial, hip, and ultimately tragic, Joseph was, well, fun.It has such a small scale, take me or leave me goofiness to it that you can't help but fall in love with.yes it's a no brainer, but it's a good no brainer. How often do you get that?

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW !!!!Diana Krall made me do something unusual !!!
What can I say?Diana is making me buy an entire album and this is the first time that I am buying albums as Christmas gifts.I am giving her album and Micheal Duble's self titled album to my closest friends.I send gifts that are high quality and thoughful gifts that I would personally enjoy (Just in case they are sent back). Both albums are kick ***, making this a banner year. All this and QE on Bravo TV!Color me happy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A real jazz album
Whatever you may think of Diana's more recent crossover music (which I think is brilliant), this early album demonstrates clearly that her music is rooted in jazz. There is no crossover here - it's pure jazz. Diana sings and plays piano, backed by a small but select band comprising a bass player (sometimes Ray Brown, sometimes Christian McBride), a drummer (Lewis Nash) and a ten saxophonist (Stanley Turrentine).5-0 out of 5 stars Stanley and Diana
Oddly, little mention in the customer reviews of Stanley Turrentine's presence on the recording. It's what makes this album different from --and hotter than --any other of Ms. Krall's fabulous work.Example: No doubt about it --Diana and the band supremely cook on the song "I Love Being Here with You" from her latest Paris live recordings. But on this version, Turrentine's tenor sax steers the tune up the onramp and into overdrive. He's jazzy enough to be interesting but stays sane and faithful to the melody.Which matches Diana's musical style, I think. But whether it's Stanley Turrentine, Ray Brown, Christian McBride, Jeff Hamilton, John Clayton, etc., it's testament to Ms. Krall's ability to attract and lead such superb associates. And at such a tender age, though she was no overnight sensation at this point, having played professionally since her teens.Read more

Rodgers & Hammerstein wrote the music for this film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The scene in which Andrews crests a hill with her arms spread singing the title track is one of the greatest in American film.Hearing that song forever fills the listener with that image, and remains as fresh and even chilling as it was initially. Unfortunately much of this has been co-opted by television advertisements or whatever, and so could languish because of the clichéd quality of it. Fortunately, conductor Irwin Kostal delivered a wonderful score, and the vocal delivery is as vibrant as any in the storied history of film musicals. --Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The music makes me feel that life is beautiful.
This is one of my favorite CD. The song I like most is `Prelude and the Sound of Music'. The lyric is so wonderful: My heart wants to beat like the wings of the birds that rise from the lake to the trees / My heart wants to sigh like a chime that flies from a church on a breeze / To laugh like a brook when it trips and falls over stones on its way / To sing through the night like a lark who is learning to pray....It seems that the song is telling me "Although sometimes people have to be realistic, there is much beauty in life. Just treasure and cherish your life." Each time I listened to this CD, I felt pleasant or even cheerful ^_^ I once gave it to a friend as a Christmas gift. I think songs in this CD are genuine.

3-0 out of 5 stars The popular tracks
Many greatest hits compilations by current bands are worthwhile because they owed their success to radio and their best work was released to radio. "Greatest hits" does not always equate with "best of" and this compilation is an excellent example of that. Many of these songs I truly enjoy. Do many songs better than "What A Wonderful World" exist? The man owns "Hello Dolly" and "Mack the Knife," and "La Vie en Rose" is a timeless, beautiful song. However, it is difficult to fathom songs such as "Skokiaan," "The Dummy Song" and "Chloe" were ever hits. They aren't especially good songs and I assume MCA included them because they lacked rights to better material. I agree with the reviewers, who have directed readers to other Satchmo releases. In addition to those recommendations, the one I would suggest is the "Jazz `Round Midnight" series release, simply titled "Louis Armstrong." "All-Time Greatest Hits" isn't a terrible CD, though it does not give a non-fan an idea of just how great some of Mr. Armstrong's music is.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!
This cd has all my favorites! I love Louis, and all his cheesy, but happy songs. It's good car music, and backround music for when your working or eating. I LOVE IT!

3-0 out of 5 stars Cookie Cutter Commercial
I have not listened to this CD. I must agree with another reviewer that Satchel Mouth is one of our lasting cultural icons. There's no need to talk about his-- I was about to say "mastery of the music," but it's more about soul than mastery. The music was just there. My comments have to do with the music selection. These cuts are his greatest hits all right, they're pleasant and enjoyable etc. They are AM Radio Hits on a Disc! If you love Louis' music, I encourage you to call up "Ambassador Satch" and listen to a few of those cuts, too. That music or his "W.C. Handy" disc and some others tell the tale of his music better than Mack the Knife, much as I--and you, no doubt--enjoy it. Give them a spin and enjoy the real roots of Louis. Even the re-mastered "Original Hot Five" and "Hot Seven" discs--cut in the 20s--are great. You might like these "not for everybody" less commercial discs even better! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dean Martin The Best Of Cassette Tape

5-0 out of 5 stars Great to learn what Dean Martin is all about.
This CD consists of Dean Martin's best songs and is a very good way to learn what Dino is all about. Listen to "That's Amore", "Volare" and my personal favorite "Sway", and my prediction is that you will fall in love with Dean (Dean's voice). For old time fans, I would recommend you to buy the multi-CD or more complete version (more songs) like "The Essential Dean Martin" or "That's Amore" etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Memories are made of this".
This seems to be a budget collection of sorts, but as far as song selection goes, all the big ones are on here. It's roughly the same as his other "hits" discs. "That's Amore", "Return to Me", and "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You" are all on here, as well as nine others. The first half of this is classic Dean. It's such a refreshing thing to put on after listening to alot of the junk on the radio. I would say if there's one thing you need with your next martini, it's this cd. It will go great with your "Frank" and "Tony" cd's too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Music and story
It's a very beautiful story about love and about will-power based on "Yentl. The yeshiva boy" by Issac Bashevis Singer. The music by Michel Legrand and marvelous voice of Barbra Streisand it's the best recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yentl Soundtrack
I had almost forgotten how much I loved this music and Barbra Streisand's passionate singing until I visited the city of Monrreal recently and saw a French language version of Yentl on television.I was inspired by seeing that to order the CD (I already owned the soundtrack on vinyl but no longer had a way of listening to it) and once again discovered how glorious it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
It's rare that the music from a show can stay with a listener for years, but as so many other reviewers attested to, this one does. Yentl is a gorgeous story - see the film! - and surprisingly, one of the last great musical films of the 20th Century. It's amazing to me that no one remarked that this was a musical, because that's how I was first introduced to it. And yet, the music and Streisand's heartfelt delivery go beyond the usual trappings of the musical genre. This is such emotional stuff, spiritual stuff, enlightening, passionate, thought-provoking, meaningful material. It is so well done, and you don't have to be a Streisand fan to marvel at her brilliance on this project. Truly, a work of art! It moved me in the 80s, and it STILL moves me today. Truly enduring and exquisite entertainment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Achingly Lovely
What a beautiful musical, and what a shame that it didn't receive the recognition that it deserved! The story, of course, is well known and the music fits it perfectly. It is one of the very few musicals that can bring me to tears while listening to it. I highly suggest that you get the OBC version. Just as an aside, if you like this show, check out "Jane Eyre" also.

5-0 out of 5 stars Acompilation 'Secret Garden'--Broadway and RSC
Like so many here, I've been captivated by "The Secret Garden" since I first heard this stunning 1991 Broadway cast album. A decade later the Royal Shakespeare Company staged a revival, and their 2001 London cast album gained its own avid followers. But neither set is completely satisfying, given that the Broadway singers are much stronger than the British, while the dramatic coherence of the RSC version represents the composer's latest thoughts.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Enchanting Musical Experience
I've listened to this CD countless times now and I never tire of it. 'The Secret Garden' is a heart-breakingly beautiful story of terrible loss and learning to live again. This refers to the experiences of both a spoiled, young girl and a sad, lonely man. In the original book the main focus of the story is on the young girl but in this version puts equal focus on the man making the story a little bit more accessible to adults. The wonderful songs convey the feelings of the characters and set the tone of the scenes perfectly. The performances are all fabulous especially those of Daisy Eagan and Rebecca Luker. Although I must admit the voice of the boy who plays Colin really irritates me, all the other singers are excellent. There is a London version of this musical which has new arrangements in an attempt to make it flashier but all it does is rob the story of it's heart so stick with the Broadway version. If you love the story of 'The Secret Garden' you don't want to miss out on this marvelous musical adaptation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Foxtrot Fun
My husband and I really enjoyed this CD. We're ballroom beginners and have trouble finding music to practice to. This CD has great songs (with singing - neither one of us cares for the "instrumental" versions of popular songs) and it allows us to practice dancing to a variety of tempi.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great collection of music!
If you are looking for a collection of standards that are by the origional artists, this is a great CD!I'm dissapointed how many collections are out there where the music is watered down versions that sound much like elevator music. This collection should definitely be apart of yours. It's great to finally be able to dance to the origionals that made the dancing popular to begin with.I should point out that this isn't a collection of greatest hits, but it shouldn't be overlooked.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great music
This was when music was music, It made you feel good inside.Sadly they don;t record like this anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars Without a doubt the finest Pet Clark collection I have ever come across
For an all too brief period in the mid 1960's Petula Clark was a major force on both the Billboard Hot 100 and on Top 40 radio as well.I became a big fan the very first time I heard her breakout hit "Downtown" in late 1964. Over the next several years Petula Clark would brighten America's airwaves with sensational singles like "I Know A Place", "Don't Sleep In The Subway", "I Couldn't Live Without Your Love" and "My Love" to name but a few.You will find just about all of Petula's American hits in BMG's marvelous 2003 offering "Ultimate Petula Clark". This is a collection that was long overdue but well worth the wait.
4-0 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...All the Top 40 US Hits
When Petula Clark burst onto the U.S. music scene in 1965 with her million-selling No. 1 hit "Downtown," most Americans had no idea that the then 32-year-old singer had already been performing and recording in her native England for the past fifteen years.Clark was no overnight sensation. Her first U
