Few would dispute that Frank Sinatra was one of the greatest popular singers of the 20th century. His voice had distinct power and majesty, whether he was belting out a swinging dance number or softly crooning a tender ballad. 5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Songs from a Timeless Singer
" Old Blue Eyes " is back and better sounding than ever in this 2000 digitally remastered cd of some of Frank Sinatra's most revered and cherished songs. I hope I'm not sounding too much like a commercial , yet it's true. I could pimp this cd forvever. I can be in any kind of mood and atleast two songs off of this packed cd , will suit me perfectly. From " Wee Small Hours " to "Witchcraft" , you'll be tapping your toes , mixing the martini's, calling up the lugs, and kissing the broads. This disc is a sure gas , baby. Hey wait.....I'm starting to sound like him !

Bruce Springsteen once said that Frank Sinatra had "a voice filled with bad attitude, life, beauty, excitement, a nasty sense of freedom, (love making) and a sad knowledge of the ways of the world." I doubt few people could describe Frank's voice better. His voice was rich, capable of expressing the finest of nuances in meaning, vibrant and thrilling all at the same time. Despite the passage of time, Sinatra will always maintain his rightful place amongst the greats in music history.

Dianne Reeves's cool contralto, fronted by a quicksilver combo featuring saxophonist Matt Catingub and pianist Peter Martin, provides the flowing jazz soundtrack to GeorgeClooney's 1950s, film detailing the epic struggle between the legendary TVnewsman Edward R. Murrow and the Communist-baiting Senator Joseph McCarthy.Reeves' delivery is flawless and swinging on these mostly mid-tempo/balladtakes on several timeless classics (including Nat King Cole's "Straighten Upand Fly Right," Duke Ellington's "Solitude," and the bouncy Dinah Washingtonhit "TV is the Thing This Year"). Two other selections, "Pick Yourself Up"and "Too Close for Comfort," dance with a Latin lilt; the loneinstrumental, "When I Fall in Love," is as romantic as they come. 5-0 out of 5 stars Buble is My Generation's Sinatra
Who whould have thought that anybody could ever even come close to Sinatra - much less be his equal?Well, Ole Blue Eyes has met his match in Michael Buble. So rarely does a talent of Buble's caliber come along...he is this generation's answer to Sinatra. Now, if we could only entice him to record a duet(s) with Renee Olstead life would be ideal!Michael not only has an amazing voice but he is truly the best performer I've ever seen...what a wicked combination! 'Caught in the Act' is superb and a definite must have.

Editorial Review

Even in the face of epochal success, it's tempting to ponder what Barbra Streisand might have accomplished had she not spread herself across so many diverse entertainment media; so much ambition, so little time. This collection of 19 Streisand duets chronicles collaborations with Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland at one end of the scale and Don Johnson at the other. It finds the singer dabbling--if, as her bluesy miscue with Ray Charles on "Crying Time" argues, not necessarily triumphing--in styles she largely eschewed elsewhere in her career. Still, her unlikely collaborations with Barry Gibb ("Guilty," "What Kind of Fool") and Donna Summer ("No More Tears (Enough Is Enough") during the disco era scored her some of the biggest successes of her career, ample proof that with the right chemistry, Streisand could be as powerful a pop music chameleon as she was a diva. New recordings with veteran Barry Manilow (the warm, low-key "I Won't Be the One to Let You Go") and Josh Groban (David Foster's overwrought "All I Know of Love") supplement recordings that stretch from the '60s kitsch-a-go-go of Harold Arlen's "Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead" across five decades of Streisand's unparalleled career. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars More Suffering For Your Money
If only they had this CD to work with at Guanatamo and Abu Ghraib, traditional methods of torture would be unnecessary. As always, Ms. Streisand brings her overwrought, unctuous smarm to the proceedings, giving schmaltz a bad name, and squeezing every drop of melodrama out of the sickly sweet material that seems to find its way to her with the inevitably of swallows returning to Capistrano. But here's the exciting part. Not only does your entertainment dollar purchase 19 different degradations of all things musical by Barbara, you also get to hear her team up with a gaggle of equally horrible - and even a few more horrible - singers.
5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE A DUET
Duets! Wonderful duets. A few of my favorite singers have Duet Albums out...Frank Sinatra and Barbra. I gave the CD a 5 stars. I have many favorites on it and two new ones. Look at the artist!! How could you not want this CD?? You cannot go wrong with Josh Groban and Babs. A timeless song by Neil Diamond and her, "You Don't Bring Me Flowers"... Barry Gibb "Guilty"..."What Kindof Fool"...and Don Johnson, better than you think. Barry Manilow...they are great together, better than I thought they would be. A real oldie treasure with Judy Garland. Remember Babs on Judy's show?

The voice of Edith Piaf carries with it perhaps more national identity than that of any other recorded artist in the world. Tiny, frail, and tragic in her life, Piaf brought French identity to the rest of the world in a way that was understandable to all. Known as "the Little Sparrow" in her country, her voice was strong, bold, and passionate, even as she grew more infirm. The archetypical torch singer, she had massive popular success with songs like "Milord," "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien," and "La Vie, L'Amour," included here with 18 other classics. While this is a great compilation of some of her best material, the complete lack of enclosed notes or biographical material may frustrate those not familiar with her fascinating career. However, the work of one of the most original songbirds of all time speaks loud and clear for itself. Read more

I have had this as a CD about 10 years, and had tapes previously, and lps previous. This and most other Piaf recordings I have owned is so good that it is sometimes hard to play. You are afraid you will never get it out of the CD player or hear anything else because it is so wonderful. This is a good introduction to Piaf's large body of work and to French songs of the middle of the 20th Century.

Barbra Streisand's bravado made her one of the 1960s' overnight sensations. This 40-cut compendium traces her recording career from early tracks that frequently relay her subtlety to often impressive accommodations with soft rock and still later vibrato-fests that find her taxing the limits of performer's ego and listeners' ears. The narrative is one of direct, sometimes showy, emotion giving way to empty displays of technique. By 1983's icky anthem "A Piece of Sky," Streisand has plowed under the light touches of "Lover, Come Back to Me" and the triumphal Read more

I was some what dissapointed in this c d. I like her music she belts out, not the very slow kind. I purched it for the song evergreen, as that was my wedding song. Most of the music is very slow and monitoned.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most bang for your barbra buck!
This is a very generous selection of Barbra's lifelong career hits! My personal favorite is "Somewhere" which uses surround sound in it and it is the most moving version I have ever heard -- it went right through me and brought me to tears. For those fans new and old that want the top of the line valentine, this is it! The sound quality on this double CD is excellent -- even on the older hits. You won't be disappointed. Get it.

2-0 out of 5 stars 2 Great Singers.12 Great Songs.1 Ho-hum Album.
I don't get the politics of Tony Bennett saying "yes, dear" to KD Lang at the end of the 1st number, but sad to say, the whole album seems an overproduced mistake, including sappy saxophone interludes and treacly high-pitched violin countermelodies.
3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks punch
I am a huge Bennett fan and have enjoyed this cd (although K.D. Lang?s voice doesn?t impress me that much.)That said, someone recently loaned me the cd of Louis Armstrong singing the same songs and it had a totally different feel.Truly Armstrong is inimitable. His versions are full of pizzazz, mischievousness and just plain fun.I?m sorry to say that after hearing the originals I found the Bennett/Lang rather mediocre.

Recorded at the historic Olympia Theatre in Paris in November 2001, this is Diana Krall's first live album. Backed by her quicksilver comboof bassist John Clayton, drummer Jeff Hamilton, and guitarist JohnPisano (on some tracks), Krall's jazz heritage comes through loud and clear on this programof standards, ballads, and bossa novas. On Peggy Lee's "I Love Being Herewith You," Bob Dorough's "Devil May Care," and Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon," Krall's snappy, postbop piano playing shows off her debt to Nat "King" Cole and Jimmy Rowles. Her cool contralto vocals are illuminated by the Orchestre Symphonique Europeen, under the direction of Alan Broadbent, as well as the London Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Claus Ogerman. Krall's deep take on Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" is a great choice for an encore, and the CD concludes with Billy Joel's "Just theWay You Are" (a studio track from a film called Read more

I should start this review by saying that I am not a jazz fan.I like a little bit every now and then, but I could never build a huge jazz collection.I listen to rock and other popular music-- everything from the Beatles to the Clash to the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Tori Amos. However, I came across this Diana Krall CD when I became interested in jazz music thanks to Joni Mitchell.Joni's albums of the '70s are heavily influenced by jazz.I loved them all, so I began looking for other female vocal jazz performers. It was in this way that I stumbled upon Diana Krall's "Live in Paris."

Bobby Darin was one of the most personally complex and unpredictable artists of the rock era. Indeed, it's hard to find another major artist who reinvented himself with the deceptive ease and overwhelming success chronicled on this 20-track highlight disc. After scoring three lively and considerable Top 10 successes in the space of a year in the late 1950s ("Splish Splash," "Queen of the Hop," "Dream Lover"), Darin traded in his teen idol sweater 'n' slacks for a tux and tie (evidence suggests he considered rock a passing fad!) and went gunning for Sinatra and the Rat Pack. The immediate results were the Grammy-winning No. 1 legend "Mack the Knife" (adapted from Kurt Weill's "Moritat" in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bobby Darin - They don't make them like that anymore!
I really love this CD, it is actually the 2nd Bobby Darin CD that I purchased. He sings clearly, with enthusiam, and a great big band sound in the background. You hear these trumpets, and a piano, things that some of today's bands just don't use.It is really great. When I am in a bad mood, all I need is a little Bobby Darin music to fix that problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful CD Collection!
I think this is a beautiful CD to have. The songs are the versions (as far as I can hear) from the radio. The cover is dazzling with the scarlet red.The story in the liner notesis detailed. The price for such a high quality, brand-new collection is more than reasonable. After seeing it and playing it, I get this feeling that everyone, even if they do not call themselves a fan of Bobby Darin, should put this CD collection on their shelf for an eternal reference to him.(Or for as least for as long as a CD will maintain its integrity.)I bought it for a couple hit singles, and wish I was more open minded to have bought it before I had that myopic idea.

5-0 out of 5 stars For four songs
These are the Darin songs I enjoyed in my college days, 'Mack the Knife' 'Somewhere Beyond the Sea' "If I were a carpenter.' Darin had an upbeat strength in his voice, and a kind of youthful arrogance. Before these he had sung pretty low- grade teen hits. But with these songs he really hit his stride, and created top-notch music.

This album of Bette Midler's Greatest Hits is just that, plain and simple. You cannot play it enough, as she is truly one of the most talented singers / actress / and gifted person on the face of the earth.Rarely do I feel the emotion of anyone's performance in voice that is as moving as from her. This album gives you just a taste of the range of talent this true star really has!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Divine Miss M's greatest hits and even better songs
I had the opportunity to see Bette Midler is her first concert in like a decade after she took off a whole bunch of years to get married and have a kid.I am here to tell you that there is nobody who works harder or put out more on stage than the Divine Miss M.We had to wait about half an hour for the show to actually begin and as soon as she descended on a swing and tried to start singing we stood up and cheered for several minutes.I kept track and including medleys Bette did parts of 48 songs, including an entire segment devoted to "Gypsy" (which she had just finished taping). She did most of the songs that appear on this hits collection, but the show stopper in my opinion was when she closed the first act doing "Delta Dawn."I will also never forget when she launched into a string of dirty jokes and how we all groaned when she started the last one ("Mother Teresa is taking a shower..."), because we knew it was going to be really, really bad.

Oklahoma has never sounded better as sung by Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones in the 1955 movie version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's unforgettable Broadway musical. The memory of MacRae's beautiful voice lives on with this CD.I never tire of hearing this wonderful music. From the opening overture to the finale you will feel as though you're right in the theater.

A very complete recording of the strong performances from the original 1950's movie. All the dances are recorded here, especially hard to find ones (Kansas City, Many a New Day and All or Nothing). You will be disappointed if you are expecting this recording to match the broadway score.None of the dances match the score and are arranged (predictably) to fit on the screen, not stage. The bonus LP Overture is the closest rendition to the original score. For Oklahoma! fans, this recording is a collector CD, especially because it has so many bonus recordings. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GET IT!
I remember when i was 3 and could barely say anything, but i could sing with my daddy a couple of these songs. Now I'm 12 and still listen to it. At The Beginning is a really good song. I would say to get it on your ipod(which you should buy too it's worth every cent) but they don't sell it there. But this is a wonderful soundtrack for all ages! You'll love beginning to the end!

5-0 out of 5 stars Anastasia Soundtrack
Excellent music! Matches all the songs on the movie. Also some real artists sing the songs. Even though Disney's name isn't on it..their musicians are the ones who preformed the songs

4-0 out of 5 stars Beings Back Forgotten Songs
I saw this movie in theatres when it first came out, and I haven't watched it since. But I am in the orchestra, and I heard the grade above me play "Once Upon a December", and I was astounded. I heard the song again, and I loved it.

Editorial Review

While Sinatra,Martin, and the Rat Pack were busy sacrificing a good measure of their vocal talents in the sordid business of fame and fortune,Tony Bennett was quietly, stubbornly, burnishing his vocal gifts into High, if seemingly effortless, Art. How good is Bennett? Just ask the Chairman of the Board and Head Rat: "The best goddamned pop singer I've ever heard." While a single disc can't offer much more than a sketchy outline of Bennett's rich, seven-decade career, this one offers the commercial peaks--and some telling hints at the restless artistic instinct that produced them. From the pure, nearly operatic power and perfect vibrato he displays on early hits such as "Rags to Riches," "Stranger in Paradise" and the overly theatrical, borderline kitsch of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" through his signature "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" to his gratifying if unlikely '90s resurgence, you can literally hear Bennett's voice tempering like the wood of a Stradivarius, his phrasing taking on a deceptively loose, jazz-fueled languor that tells you where his musical heart really lies. The singer, not the song; damn straight advice--take it from a master. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Just a start for lots more to discover
In my opinion, Tony Bennett made a lot of "definite" versions of standards. A truly high accomplishment.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD
Really enjoy this CD.I'm on chemotherapy and take a CD player to treatment and this is one of the ones I take with me.As I'm "older", I truly enjoy listening to songs I loved as a much younger person.Anyone who likes Tony Bennett should enjoy the Ultimate Tony Bennett.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dean Martin's 'ITALIAN LOVE SONGS'
Was in Italy getting married and discovered we were missing our two "Best of..." albums. No 'Volare' after flying all that way? And how can you visit Napoli (where love is king) without a copy of "That's Amore"? Well this album arrived on our wedding day - a godsend! Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars fun great slightly cheesy music
I totally enjoy this album. Martin's voice goes perfectly in these arrangements. This music makes you feel good.
