5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Rat Pack
Excellent compilation of Dean Martin hits.Dean Martin has a voice that stands alone without all the background of support and instrumentals.A nice album to relax with after the kids have been put to bed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Master Of Suave And The King Of Cool: Dean Martin
For more than 50 years the world has had the very great privilege of being entertained by the one and only Dean Martin. Fans of all ages have enjoyed Dean's undeniable charm and cool wit, and his place in American pop culture is undisputed. He was part of one of the most successful comedy teams ever, made numerous movies including comedies, dramas, and westerns, had a TV show that was highly rated and ran for almost two decades, performed live in concert to millions of adoring fans, and was a cornerstone of one of the most hip and talented group of men the world has ever seen, The Rat Pack! All that said, it was Dean's elegant voice and easy phrasing and style that was the common thread that ran through all of his many outstanding accomplishments.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Change of Pace for Christmas Songs
Wonderful album -- full of love songs, interesting lyrics and arrangements, and gentle sense of humor.Goes perfectly with a glass of wine, a big picture window, and some falling snow.Franks' voice hasn't changed at all.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best type of Holiday Album
Fantastic Michael Franks "Style" note-blowin'.I play it year round 'cause it's not tied to the traditional sounds of the holidays. What makes it "Christmasie" is the subjects of the songs. The music is puuure Michael in the usual jazzy, cool style baby. You know how MF likes to get away to the islands for some "snorkelling and sleep," well Mr. Franks croons "I want an island Christmas..this year."It's full of blue-green sea and coconut palm imagery(swim suits optional). You'll love this year round.Buy it as a gift for your jazzy friends! ... Editorial Review

This impressive--and frankly, fun--musical document is still sending out shock waves almost 50 years after its original 1952 vinyl release. The Smithsonian's six-CD reissue is painstakingly researched, annotated, and packaged (even boasting an enhanced disc for the techno-capable). Unlike field recorders, eccentric filmmaker/collector/musicologist Harry Smith assembled the Read more

This collection led to the "re-discovery" of many artistswho had dissapeared after when the depression crippled the recording industry. Mississippi John Hurt is probably the most famous as of now, but others, like Clarence Ashley were major finds at the time - and when Folkways sent a field crew to do a new record by Ashley he requested some assist from a young friend named Doc Watson. Watson was unknown outside his home town at the time but went on to become a major star in a field which has very few stars.

I dont think there is a need to go into to much detail about this *6 CD* set.If you can fork over the cash, just buy it. If you have any interest in roots music, just buy it. If you thought ol' Bobby Dylan and the Band made some great weird music in the basement of big pink in '67 .. for the love of god, BUY THIS!strange, unadorned, raw music , just buy it.

Much ink & many electrons have been devoted to explaining both Harry Smith (and a lot of explanation is necessary -- very interesting man) and this wonderful collection of recordings from the 1920's and 30's, so I won't go into too much detail here.If you'd like a good treatise on the work itself as a cultural object, and how it relates to other thematically similar items, I would reccomend Griel Marcus' book Invisible Republic.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Peter pan: Original Broadway Cast Recording
I was fortunate enough to record the Mary Martin TV version of Peter Pan and want to know if it was ever put out in VHS or DVD if so where can I get it. I'd like to keep this wonderful version of Peter Pan for my grandchildren.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mary Martin will "never grow old"
Though other Peter Pan performances have been decent, there's no other performance that could match the wonderfully talented Mary Martin, nor the rest of the cast. If you wish to get a good find, this is the ultimate version to buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Mary
I've loved this movie and seen it over 100 times, and each time I've adored it even more.I love the fact that a women (Mary Martin) plays peter. My school did Peter Pan, and I got the part of Peter because I showed this film to my drama teacher. Editorial Review

A more explanatory title might be "Sons of Sondheim" since this disc is the first anthology of the young, brainy, literate, hip songwriters who are influenced by Stephen Sondheim and just might turn Broadway's artistic compass several degrees away from Disneyland. Musically, they break most unwritten precepts by freely modulating into distant keys and throwing traditional notions about form and symmetry to the wind when dramatic content dictates it. Adam Guettel is the master storyteller in "Come to Jesus" (about abortion) and "Baby Moon" (about pregnancy). Michael John La Chiusa writes great character sketches: his "Mistress of the Senator" might as well be a tour through the mind of Monica Lewinsky. Ricky Ian Gordon is the most subtle, poetic, and abstract, exploring interior states of being, using the words of Langston Hughes and others. McDonald is ideal throughout, deploying her lustrous soprano with the dramatic relish that has won her three Tony Awards. This could be a watershed release. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars When Lord, when will Audra McDonald make her foray into opera?
She could sing the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List and I'd pay full price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Moody
Audra McDonald has won four Tony Awards, and this album will let you know why. She has a splendid, full-bodied voice, perfect for interpreting layered and textured music. For this album, she has chosen songs mostly by two of the best composers currently working: Michael John LaChiusa and Jason Robert Brown. She does both of them justice.
5-0 out of 5 stars All for the forging of new groud
The world needs more beautiful songs, and Audra McDonald gives them to us. With the release of her debut album, Ms. McDonald gives all of us a chance to hear up-and-coming music composers who demonstrate that good songs need not follow all the rules of songwriting. It is truly daring and exciting for any singer to make such a statement. "These are great songs by great composers and I have the voice to make them shine." It is so refreshing to see new artists who do not write their own material still find ways of giving us new music worth hearing.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Heavenly Record
An absolutely wonderful and Heavenly Record.Could listen to it over and over again.Saw Michael Crawford in "Phantom of the Opera" and was absolutely bowled over by his voice,no hint of which we had been given in his UK TV work.I was simply looking for a recording of "On Eagles Wings" and when his name came up as singing it, had no hesitation to buying his version.Would like to rate it higherthan 5 stars!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Michael Crawford shines!
If anyone is not a Michael Crawford fan when they purchase this item, when the last note of the last song is done.. I guarantee you will be.The man can carry a note and his voice is that of an angel! Michael includes Christian songs in his concerts, so be sure to get the IN CONCERT DVD only because it can just give more of the experience of the CD of the same name. You can listen to him all day if you choose to, you will not tire of his singing. It is melodic, soft, dramatic, electic and just heavenly.

I really enjoy this music.I like the quality and style of music presented by the Irish Tenors, and I like Christmas music. This is the perfect CD for me.I like hearing it from early November through the holiday season.I have given this album as a gift, and it was much appreciated.I would recommend it for anyone who likes traditional Christmas music.

5-0 out of 5 stars BREATH - TAKING !!!
I have the CD and the tape of this item and I have also seen the Concert twice.TWICE !! The most amazing part of it is when Anthony sings his LITTLE JESUS BOY.When I went to the concert the first time I wasn't really prepared for the effect that song would have on me. On the CD & tape he sings with a Choral Group to back him up. EXCEPT FOR THE FIRST LINES OF THAT SONG !!!!!.5-0 out of 5 stars Home for Christmas--A Masterpiece
Like millions of others I discovered the Irish Tenors through PBS.I promptly began looking for anything else by these wonderful performers and found this Cd.The music is soul-satisfying as the Christmas music is allsacred (the closest to secular is "Good King Wenceslas"). Thearrangements are in turn glorious, tender, and sweet. "Suo Gan"by McDermott, ''Sweet Little Jesus Boy" and "The WexfordCarol" by Kearns are highlights. Of the ensemble pieces, "SilentNight" and "Joy to the World" stand out. But the crowningselection is "The Holy City." 5-0 out of 5 stars It is ESSENTIAL
I am a huge Mathis fan and this 2 cd set covers a good part of his career. It was nice to hear some live recordingd. It has been in my player non stop.

5-0 out of 5 stars When did I get old?
I have been listening to Johnnie Mathis for over 40 years. And, while I did "stray" from his music in my 30's, I have found that as the years go by, I am making my way back to him. This is an album that does exactly that: takes me back to his music that I know and love.Regardless of your mood, there is a song on this album for you. When I listen, certain songs bring back very, very fond memories, while others are used to create new ones in my life today. It's an album worth having.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding balladeer
Johnny was one of the most successful balladeers of the twentieth century although he does not get the recognition that he deserves for his achievements. This compilation includes most of the songs for which he is famous, together with a selection of other tracks that demonstrate his brilliance. Three British top ten hits (Someone, My love for you, I'm stone in love with you) are omitted but those seeking the definitive British hits collection should go for the earlier double CD, Very best of Johnny Mathis, which contains all his British hits, however minor. This set, compiled in America, offers a very different selection of songs although there is some duplication.

Culled from the Columbia Records reissue packages, variously released under the multivolume Quintessential Billie Holiday umbrella, this package goes straight for the love songs, the heart of Holiday. Ranging from such playful lyrics as "Let's Do It" and "Them There Eyes" to such essential Holiday as "You Go to My Head," "The Very Thought of You," and "Easy Living," this set is guaranteed to keep the home fires burning brightly. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Billie Holiday Songs
There are so many fabulous reviews for this CD and I have to agree with them. I've been a Billie Holiday fan for years and own many discs of her music, but I find myself reaching for this one a lot. It's a great collection of songs and her voice is so sweet and true here. She's in top form and the arrangements on the songs are all excellent. Whoever put this CD together knew what they were doing. This is definitely Billie during the earlier part of her career and there's a real lightness to this music. (Her later music is great too, but very different.) Most of the songs on this CD are classics and even if you're unfamiliar with her, you'll probably still recognize many of them. There is some crackling background noise on some of the songs, since they were recorded back in the late thirties/early forties, though it's not that bad and most of the time you barely notice it. Some of the stand outs are "You Go To My Head", "The Very Thought of You", "Let's Do It", "The Way You Look Tonight", just to name a few. I think this would be a great introductory CD for someone who is curious about her and would like to hear some of her music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh, Billie!HOW DIVINE !!!
This CD is an excellent collection of great songs performed by the incomparable and legendary Billie Holiday. Billie could conquer any song--from the most vulgar to the most sublime with an electric performance that rivals the best singers of the 20th century.

5-0 out of 5 stars Linda deserves 10 stars on this one!
This double CD set containing three albums is so spectacular, it will bring tears to your eyes. I love them both so much, that I have told my family to play these CDs (and only these CDs) at my wake and my funeral instead of the typical boring organ-death music. I also told my family if anyone asks- why is this Linda Ronstadt music playing? You tell them- because this is what he is listening to in heaven for all eternity. One last thing, if that was me on the cover with her, she would have never turned her head. Thank you once again Linda.

5-0 out of 5 stars Linda is magnificent.
She truly has a remarkable voice. There is no one like her and these songs are classics done by a classic singer. No more neeeds be said.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Great After 20 Years!
It seems inconceivable to me that I bought Linda Ronstadt's WHAT'S NEW way back in 1983! This was her first collaboration with the magnificent Nelson Riddle, and they were to follow up with two more equally fabulous albums, LUSH LIFE (1984) and FOR SENTIMENTAL REASONS (1986). At the time, I was a mid twenties guy who would be, as likely as not, listening to Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd. These albums certainly seemed to be out of place on my record shelf. I got more than my fair share of strange comments and askew looks from my friends when I would put one of these albums on to play, but I did not care. These albums introduced me to many of the jazz and swing standards, from Gershwin and Berlin, to Hoagy Carmichael, Rogers and Hart. From these albums, I moved on to create a respectable library of some of the most wonderful music ever written, performed by some of the greatest artists of the twentieth century.

I have heared many recordings for Cole Porter 's " Anything Goes ", but I like this one the best. The opening song is a historic and rare recording by Cole himself. This CD is a revised version of this song that was played in Lincoln Center in New York. Pattie LuPone has a truly beautiful ,strong yet sentimental voice. I highly recommend it

A real classic from the authorship of a B'way legend. A work like this has great relevance because it stands as a wonderful recording for one of the greatest classics of the musical theatre of all times. Voices and orchestrations are wonderful. The title song sounds great in the voice of Patti LuPone. A cultural treasure to keep and listen over and over again.

Editorial Review

Commemorating the 40th anniversary of Nat King Cole's death in 1965, this compilation is the CD companion of an excellent DVD/documentary. Produced with the blessing of his estate, this disc is a thorough survey of his timeless genius--all recorded on the Capitol label. It captures his sumptuous and soothing tenor voice crooning on the pop tunes he made famous, like the ethereal "Nature Boy," the melancholy "Mona Lisa," and the bouncy "Straighten Up and Fly Right," and "Route 66." It also features Cole's often-overlooked skills as an Earl Hines-style pianist. "Quizas, Quizas, Quizas (Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps)," and "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup," attest to his international appeal, and see if you can keep a dry eye when you listen to Natalie Cole's posthumous, digitally-enhanced duet with her father on "Unforgettable." From strings to big bands, Nat King Cole is never out of style. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Man With The VelvetVoice
It's been around forty years since the passing of the legendary Mr. Nat King Cole. And even to this day his music lives on thorough his many fans some new and some old.Mr Cole was a extraordinary singer, piano player and a musical genius who had a natural feel for music. And to this day his influence and style is still having it's effect on the music world. And in this modern age I think only Luther Vandross came close to matching the magic and style of Nat King Cole. This ablum 'The World Of Nat King Cole' gives us some of his best vocal songs like 'When I Fall In Love,Too Young,Smile and A Blosson Fell'.That's just a taste of the Cole magic. And if you want more check out the unforgettable 'Unforgettable' one of Cole's best songs with it's wonderful lyrics. The way he sings 'Mona Lisa' really touchs the heart. The Velvet voice of Cole is at it's best on 'Nature Boy' with its philosophical overtures. And I just love the songs 'On The Street Where You Live' and 'I Love You(For Sentimental Reasons'.Beautiful songs for people in love.So just how popular is Mr. Cole's music today? Well a few years ago his daughter Natalie wanted to rejuvenate her career. She was smart enough to record a album of her fathers work titled 'Unforgettable'.Needles to say the album was a big hit for her.And it did wonders for her career.Yes,Mr.Nat King Cole the man with the velvet voice.Wonderful musical world just keeps turning and entertaining.

If you're an avid Cole Collector, there's really nothing new here. However, if you're new to Nat King Cole's music, this is an excellant starting point. Not only are the Original versions of his influencial singles here (except Smile which is from his 1961 album "The Nat King Cole Story", and "Send For Me", which is a re-engineered version of the 1957 hit from the 1965 album "Looking Back")but there are also some gems from his LP releases as well, like On the Street Where You Live, from his "My Fair Lady" album, and "Let's Face the Music", from the '64 album of the same name. This album is pretty much a retread of the "Greatest Hits" package from 1994, and the "Capitol Collectors Series" from 1990, but with a few extra goodies. You've got a beautifully created booklet, with lots of rare photos of Nat with President Kennedy, Queen Elizabeth, and even relaxing at home with his kids.Good Stuff. Now, Capitol, where is the long awaited television documentary "The World Of Nat King Cole", that was supposed to accompany this CD?It has already aired in Great Britain, and is on DVD there. Why not here? ... Read more

Editorial Review

Grandfather though he may be, Tom Jones still stalks the stages of the world clad in a tuxedo, the very personification of testosterone-fueled cool. Thanks to a career made mostly on the stage, where women continue to pelt him with undergarments, his image is well defined. His recorded legacy is somewhat more diffuse, though, as this set amply proves. There's torrid main-room Vegas fare such as "It's Not Unusual," "Delilah," and "She's a Lady," plus the coy "What's New Pussycat" and the bombastic Bond theme, "Thunderball." But Jones also scored, somewhat surprisingly, with country-flavored material such as "Green, Green Grass of Home" and "Detroit City." Like the other Read more

Great assortment of his best hits.Brings back many memories.Great voice.Too bad he quit.

5-0 out of 5 stars S-e-x-y
A must for nostalgic fans who remember ole swivel hips from decades gone by. Ladies of the flower-children era, take note: "Daughter of Darkness" takes me right back to the sixties when they had full orchestras backing wonderful singers regardless of genre. "Help Me Make It Through the Night" makes me feel like a groupie. "I Who Have Nothing" is a gem that I had completely forgotten. What a voice! What a visual to the mind!

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic showcase for a superb voice
Tom Jones' sumptuous, expressive voice is simply astonishing in this collection that includes many of my favorites...in fact the only Jones favorite of mine that is missing from this compilation is "With These Hands"...all the others are here: "Thunderball", "(It looks Like) I'll Never Fall in Love Again", "Delilah", "The Green, Green Grass of Home", and many more that delight the ears and give one a sense of nostalgia for the days when music like this was popular.

5-0 out of 5 stars May be the best pieces of music I have ever heard
Now I know that this album in particular has had really mixed reviews, and I know I may not be completely trusted in giving it five stars amidst many hideous reviews. However, I do believe music is subjectively reviewed, and my opinion may differ from others, so here it is.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is her best album so far.
There a many slow songs, but it's really soothing.I like drinking green tea and just listening to it.Whether I'm studying, driving, or listening to it at work, it also gets me in a good mood.Although I must admit that it took a while for me to fully appreciate it, this album is her best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Streisand keep the music playing on this great set
Of all of the many veteran pop singers who have been recording albums of standards during the first few years of the twenty-first century (Rod Stewart and Bette Midler come immediately to mind), Barbra Streisand's THE MOVIE ALBUM is the only one of the group that doesn't feel like a Vegas-like attempt to grab some quick sales. There are several reasons for this. For one, Streisand has been recording standards her entire career, even before her stint as successful pop vocalist in late-seventies.Also, instead of relying on the same worn-out tunes and tepid arrangements that plague most of the other similar releases of the last few years, Streisand has chosen a set of terrific, mostly unfamiliar material, rendered with a refreshingly tasteful production that is neither too slick nor too overdone.

Editorial Review

Like a gifted actress, Sarah Vaughan always makes lyrics come alive, whether on poignant ballads or buoyant pop novelties. Vaughan "plays" her voice as if it is a "real" instrument, and on this 1955 marvel, she is matched with musicians of an equally high caliber. On "Lullaby of Birdland," she trades harmonically advanced scat lines with Herbie Mann, Paul Quinichette, and Clifford Brown. Vaughan is hauntingly romantic and Brown is at his most lyrical on "September Song." She shows her unbelievable bop-influenced creativity on "You're Not the Kind"; Brown's hard-swinging solo and Quinichette's Lester Young-styled softness set up an incredible ending cascade from Vaughan. Pianist Jimmy Jones's beautiful chords on the infectious "He's My Guy" show why he was one of the most sought-after vocal accompanists, while Vaughan's phrasing, deliberately behind the time, adds perfectly to the relaxed feel. "April in Paris" reveals her operatic quality as Brown's tingling riffs fill in the space behind her. Throughout, Sassy combines exquisite elegance, impressive range, and an effortless delivery. 5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Lullaby
Listening to this collaboration between Sarah Vaughan and Clifford Brown (among others) today makes you feel as if time stood still since it was originally recorded in 1954. Vaughan's voice is as crisp now as it will ever be and brings you a sense of what a truly timeless performance is and what art is all about. Packing classic after classic, you hear her perform jazz standards like it is the first time you've heard the songs, such as the case of "Lullaby of Birdland". Her wide ranging voice will simply never die and will continue to save a place for her in music history as one of the best singers ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vaughan and Brown "speak" the same language on this CD.
This 2003 release of Vaughan's December, 1954, album (previously released in 1991 as "Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown") is one of her most brilliant collaborations and a fine memorial to the work of Brown, who died eighteen months after recording this, at age twenty-six. With Brown on trumpet, Paul Quinichette on tenor sax, Jimmy Jones on piano, Roy Haynes on drums, and Herbie Mann on jazz flute, the album is a sophisticated partnership among musicians, all of whom are thinking of the whole sound and the whole effect, rather than their own star turns. The mood varies from light to poignantly tender, the tempo is usually slow, and the volume is kept low, highlighting the creativity of each performer's variations while remaining true to the songs and their meanings.
5-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't take much
I'm a man of few words, but many CDs. This is in my top 20 secure CD case. All the tracks are excellent, but, September Song is my favorite. GET IT! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a quiet romantic evening
These CDs are a collection of quiet jazz pieces --real jazz and not the "elevator music" that is sometimes confused with jazz by those who don't understand jazz. These selections are the perfect background for a dinner party or a quiet evening for two, and also just for listening by yourself if you are in a quiet mood. Volumes I and II are each a double CD which provides plenty of good music for the entire evening.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hef Knows His Stuff
This is a wonderful compilation of great performers doing time tested standards. It is not party music, but slow tempo, late night greats.
