5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Family listening!
I used this DVD to teach the kids a song from Vacation bible school, and had a bunch of people ask me where I bought it.It was just what I needed.

2-0 out of 5 stars BEFORE it was a musical...
BEFORE it was a musical it was a cantata with orchestra and children's choir. Slicked, glossed, and cheesy, the broadway versions all fall short of the original, concise masterpiece recorded on the ONE AND ONLY ORIGINAL version alas, out of print and available only on vinyl. As overblown broadway versions go, this 1992 version may be the best. But, for those of us who grew up listening to the original, the broadway versions do nothing but disappoint. The Joseph Consortium version of the original cantata recording included Tim Rice singing the role of Pharoah and was released by Scepter Records. Where the rights may be now for re-release, who knows?

Over the years, I have tried in vain to purchase the "real" original version.. Yes, Donny Osmond is decent and all.. I grew up watching him and his family on tv.. But concerning this title, they try to pass off the various versions on this site and in stores as "The Original Version".. It's not... I have the "Real" Original version on vinyl.. I've been looking to replace it on CD..

4-0 out of 5 stars A really cute show
This is a fantastic score, and though the original cast recording may be more authentic/true to the Peanuts cartoon, a clearer sound and a bigger orchestra does nothing but good for this CD. Anthony Rapp is a fantastic charlie brown and shows his distress perfectly. the song that was written for kristin chenoweth is laugh-out-loud funny and a great addition.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Broadway show for families
As a long-time Broadway junkie, I've made it my mission to introduce my 2 young daughters to as many age-appropriate musicals as possible.Charlie Brown is fun with a basic, life-affirming message without being sugary and melodramatic. The multicultural casting on this version was a nice touch, and the cast vocals blend nicely as well as standing out on their own. It's no surprise that Kristin Chenoweth won the Tony for this performance-just listen to My New Philosophy and you'll see why.Great to hear Anthony Rapp apart from Rent, and BD Wong's My Blanket and Me is sweet and charming.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Cute Show
I recently directed a production of You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. The show is really sweet, though it is hard to make sure that it is not overly "cutzy". I like the vocalist in this updated version, though some of the modernization of the songs are overdone.

3-0 out of 5 stars If you loved the Movie -- YOU WON'T GET ADELAIDE
Sorry, I didn't get to see the Broadway show.I really loved the movie --Frank Sinatra & Stubby Kaye are spectacular.Brando can't sing, but tries to sing and dance. One of my favorite songs NOT AVAILABLE ON THE BROADWAY ALBUM is "Adelaide" ... is taking a chance on me.That was disappointing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Recording
Great recording of one of the greats. The original is now difficult to listen to due to the tinny sound and mono recording. this revival was wonderful, with a great cast and now a definitive, excellent recording. Skip the movie soundtrack.

5-0 out of 5 stars Damon Runyon was Smilling on Broadway...
Drats !I can't believe I let myself miss this revival... If the stage production was as good as the cast recording I can only say that I really hope that the chaps in Great Britain who are currently rehearsing up the latest revival are on up on their jippers (or whatever they call them) on this one... (Actually the New York dialect doesn't seem so authentic on this one... strange... guess Gulliani really did clean up Time Square...)

What can one say? It's Cole Porter.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not AnythingBut One of the Best
I have heared many recordings for Cole Porter 's " Anything Goes ", but I like this one the best. The opening song is a historic and rare recording by Cole himself. This CD is a revised version of this song that was played in Lincoln Center in New York. Pattie LuPone has a truly beautiful ,strong yet sentimental voice. I highly recommend it

5-0 out of 5 stars A REAL CLASSIC!
A real classic from the authorship of a B'way legend. A work like this has great relevance because it stands as a wonderful recording for one of the greatest classics of the musical theatre of all times. Voices and orchestrations are wonderful. The title song sounds great in the voice of Patti LuPone. A cultural treasure to keep and listen over and over again.

4-0 out of 5 stars A near-perfect recording
Chicago is a classic, and that classic status remains in the revival recording. Bebe Neurwith is truly a delight as Velma Kelly, and shines in the star number of "All That Jazz", but it's the men who steal the show. James Naughten and Joel Grey are perfect as Billy Flynn and Amos Hart. Every single one their numbers is absolutely perfect are true classics. There are, however, two downsides. First is that the film soundtrack exceeds vocally with Catherine Zeta-Jones as a belting Velma. Second, and ultimately, Anne Reinking's rendition of "Roxie" is downright awful. I love her versions of "Funney Honey" and "Me and My Baby", but "Roxie" is disgusting. In all, however, a wonderful, fun, and classic recording.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't be so harsh on Ann
I understand that many of you who have bought this CD will be Broadway lovers (and I am one myself)and you will be used to the lead roles having amazing powerful voices. But just as important as good singing is good acting. I think that Ann interpreted Roxie as a wannabe who had the enthusiasm but lacked the talent, which makes her raspy tones and sing-speak completely plausible. It also supports the theme that you can use other things than talent to get yourself to the top This may not be the way you like Roxie played, but you shouldn't shun Ann's interpretation. It's a good thing if there is more than one way of having a character played, I think so anyway.
2-0 out of 5 stars Good, But Not Great.
The revival edition of CHICAGO could be a whole lot better (like the original or the movie soundtrack.) But it is good none the less.

Editorial Review

This 1999 revival of Irving Berlin's timeless 1946 musical fantasy depictingthe love affair between Wild West sharpshooting stars Annie Oakley and Frank Butlerhas been somewhat updated for modern times. Not only has Peter Stone made revisions to Herbert and Dorothy Fields's original book (the story is now a show within a show, namely Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show), but there have been revisions to Berlin's original score as well. Some of it relates directly to late-'90s political correctness--"I'm an Indian, Too" joins "Colonel Buffalo Bill" and "I'm a Bad Bad Man" among the exclusions. But the tunes that made the cut remain some of the greatest moments of American musical theater, which is especially ironic when one considers that Berlin had to be coaxed into writing the show after original composer Jerome Kern suddenly died. Many of these songs--"They Say It's Wonderful," "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly," "I Got the Sun in theMorning," "The Girl That I Marry," "Anything You Can Do"--have become standards on their own, and the revival thankfully retains the wonderful "An Old Fashioned Wedding," which Berlin wrote for the 1966 Lincoln Center revival of the show, with original Annie Ethel Merman reprising the role. Years after the fact, Merman remains a tough image to follow. But while she lacks Merman's brass and crassness, Bernadette Peters stands as the prettiest and sexiest Annie to date, even in the shadows of Mary Martin and Betty Hutton (the latter in the 1950 film version), not to mention probably the greatest singer of the bunch--her "You Can't Get a Man with a Gun" is an instant Broadway classic. They overdo "There's No Business Like Show Business" just a tad in this new version; it's seemingly reprised endlessly early in the CD. But, hey, if you're going to overdo it, what a song to overdo it with. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars 3.5, but Original is better.
The 1946 Original version is better for many reasons, but the main two are: it has a completer song list, and it isnt affected by Burnadette Peters. If you are a Peters fan, this is fine for you, but her voice just grinds on me and I can't stand it. Plus one of my favorite songs "I'm a Bad, Bad Man" isnt on this recording but is on the other. There are really no other differences between the show. Favorite Songs: "They Say It's Wonderful"

4-0 out of 5 stars A good revival album
We did this show when I was in high school, but I didn't buy it until after we did the show.I just hadn't caught on that when doing a musical, buy the soundtrack and rehearse with it.Anyway back to the review, we practiced dancing with some of the numbers using this cd.So, I decided to buy it.Overall I like it very much.I'm not a huge Bernadette Peters fan, but I do like her.She didn't quite seem right for the part, but her singing makes up for it.Other than that the rest of the cast is great! The music is more updated which makes it more appealing to today's listeners.I just wished they would have released the new album with Reba McEntire doing the lead. She was playing when I was in New York, but of course it was completely sold out.

My high school is doing Forum for there musical this year (I play Erronius by the way..), and this play is hysterical.Although, the movie conversion was totally crappy. The stage version is funnier. Nathan Lane was superb as Psudolus, and i reaaly didnt like him being replaced by Whoopi Goldberg...o well...

4-0 out of 5 stars Timeless and Classic
I personally am not a fan of classic musical theatre (although the time it was written may not be classic, but I do consider the music to be), but I love this album! The lyrics are witty and clever, and the wonderful music is all that I'd expect from Sondheim. This is a sure bet for anyone who's looking for a light-hearted musical where everything turns out okay in the end. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Alan Cummings can ruin anything!
I am NOT an Alan Cummings fan, everything I have seen him do has grated on my nerves like chalk on a blackboard. Aside from him, terrific interpretation, realistic, and the other performances, Richardson imparticularly, are first rate. Never mind Richardsonsless than Minelliesque singing voice, she acts the part dead on, she IS what Sally Bowles would have been.

2-0 out of 5 stars I didn't see the show
But I am a big fan of the music. While I get the fact that Sally Bowles is supposed to be second-rate and I'm all for doing Cabaret as realistically as possible, I still find it extremely difficult to listen to Natasha's Richardson's singing.I just can't figure out why one would voluntarily subject oneself to something so terrible and painful to listen to.The patrons of the "real" Kit Kat Club were obviously really drunk and depressed while listening to Sally Bowles, but I'm not prepared to get wasted every time I want to listen to the music of Cabaret.I don't doubt that Natasha Richardson was great in the role, but maybe it was necessary to see her in the the show to derive pleasure from her songs here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Praise for Alan Cumming
As an amateur actor myself, it is incredible to hear the performance of Alan Cumming in this album. His voice almost lets us see his movements in thier emphasis, and he is able to translate every word of the songs with shocking emotion and purpose, something difficult to do for anyone. He is incredibly versitile; he is effeminate, risque, lustful, dirty, and raunchy, but still manages to display the sorrow and drama of his last songs. When singing "I don't care much," his performance brings tears to my eyes even after listening to it countless times. though the entire album is amazing, it would be worth it just to hear Alan. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD of a musical, and fast delivery time
This is an ecxellent CD. Top shelf CD with great cast. This was exactly what we were looking for. Glad we spent the money, as it has helped us with a school production for 2006.
2-0 out of 5 stars A recording that pales beside it's predecesser
Alright, this recording is of better sound quality than the original, but the actually singing simply pales beside the orginal. Sarah Jessica Parker sound like a rock next to Carrol Burnett. The rest of the cast is not too horrible though. The best songs are the chorus songs, with the exception Sensitivy.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really enjoy listening to this recording.I actually bought the CD because I had to audition for the part of Lady Larken for my middle school play and wanted to pick an audition song. Up 'til then, I had not even heard of this show, but I listened to this recording and fell in love with it.Sarah Jessica Parker is awesome, particularly in SHY and HAPPILY EVER AFTER. 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I absolutely love this musical. It was the first broadway musical I ever saw - I saw it about 10 years ago.We bought this CD right afterward and went on a family vacation to Europe soon after... this CD was played throughout the ENTIRE trip.I know every word to every song, and to me it never gets old!! I ended up being in the play and seeing the movie with Donny Osmond as well, but I always loved this version the most and finally found it on Amazon. This is an absolutely incredible version, I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still great after all this time
I have seen the DVD version of this play with Donnie Osmond in the lead as JOSEPH, and while he did a good job, Michael Damian outshines his vocal performance by far. I think his voice fits this role quite well and I am still enjoying this version of the soundtrack, 12 years later. I received the cd as a Christmas gift in 1993, and I have almost wore it out because I enjoy it so much. Now, my 7 yr old son loves the music just as much as I do. I have added this wonderful musical on my IPOD player. Also, I think that Kellie Rabke, who portrays the NARRATOR, has a phenominal voice. I like her much better than the young lady who is in the DVD with Donnie Osmond. Even though I like to watch it better than listening to it, I find that the vocal performances of the cast do not reflect those of the cd. I would reccommend this cast album for anyone who has already seen or plans to see this play. I am finally going to see it live when it comes to my city in February 2006. Needless to say, I am very excited to see it and I can only hope for vocals as strong as those in this cast.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good But Other Albums Are Better
The classic story of Joseph and his multicolored coat in musical form! This is a good album if you wanna hear pretty voices singing, but if you want energy and passion, I suggest finding a different version of this musical's soundtrack like the Canadian version.

This terrific new recording of Cole Porter's greatest show grabs you from the beginning: shimmering strings lead straight into "Another Op'nin', Another Show" before the orchestra takes over. Then it's on to many of Porter's best-loved melodies and wittiest lyrics, including "Wunderbar," "So in Love," "Always True to You (In My Fashion)," and "Why Can't You Behave?" 3-0 out of 5 stars broadway buff
This is a case of fixing something that ain't broke. Cole Porter is a master of musical score, his genius lies in the superbly witty blend of the story line, lyrics, and score. Technically this recording may be superior to the original 1950 Broadway version, but that's all. Modifying the score is an interesting effort but inferior to the original. The singing voices of the actors in this new Broadway cast probably appeal to the less-well trained ear of to-day's young adults, but to someone a bit older than that these, their voices sound ill trained, screechy and oblivious of the original score and lyrics. Cole Porter's elegant wit blows completly by them.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Version out there!
I have to say this totally changed my views on Kiss Me Kate. After seeing the movie I thought it was good, but at times to operatic and it made my ears ring too much. After buying the broadway cast CD I pretty much put this musical in the catorgory of musicals I just didn't like that much.I got the new cast album as a gift and was hesitant to listen to it.I put it on in the background and was so suprized! Finally instead of the normal sing ever song the same operatic way these actors were feeling there music!I mean I can see why some would perfer the ballad operatic tones in "I hate Men" and "always true to you" because that's how they were always done, but I loved the attitude that this cast displayed by her snariling angry version of I hate men and the none operatic "Always True to You".There were countless other songs I enjoyed so much more beacause they didn't cause you to go death from having the same operatic ring to them. This version of Kiss Me Kate is the best ever!

4-0 out of 5 stars zesty new revival of the Cole Porter classic
The 1999 Broadway revival of KISS ME KATE was a big success, running nearly 3 years and spawning a national tour as well as a London production (which was taped for DVD release). The cast album is a real delight.Brian Stokes Mitchell (KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN, MAN OF LA MANCHA) is a grand Fred Graham, and Marin Mazzie is a thrilling Lilli Vanessi, the feuding ex-spouses starring in a musical version of Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew".Michael Berresse and Amy Spanger add a playful sexiness to their performamces as Bill Calhoun and Lois Lane, with Adriane Lenox as a perfectly-belted Hattie. The orchestrations by Don Sebesky are bright and full of bounce; I especially love the bluesy arrangement of "So in Love".This cast album is highly-recommended if you already own the OBC with Alfred Drake, Patricia Morison and Lisa Kirk. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Company
It took 25 years for a Broadway revival of COMPANY to happen. When it did it was a production by the Roundabout Theatre Company announced for a limited run and though there were rumors the show would transfer to another Broadway theatre, this was not to be. There are changes to the text and orchestration here. The orchestra is reduced to fourteen players, less than half the size of the original.Recording techniques have changed since 1970 and the singers now all use isolation booths. The result on the record is not the sound of all voices blending into an ensemble but of 11 individual voices. This is most apparent in You Could Drive a Person Crazy.Debra Monk sounds too young and lacks world-weary quality needed for Joanne and screams too much in The Ladies Who Lunch, but La Chanze makes a wonderful Marta, belting out Another Hundred People in a style all her own.
3-0 out of 5 stars It's the little things
I'd like to get proponents of the three versions of "Company" I'm aware of - the OBC, 1996 London, and this 1996 Broadway Revival Cast - and put them in a room together to "discuss" which one is the best. And better, put a large table in the center of the room, piled high with fruits and doughnuts and the sort, and see how long it takes for the food to start flying.
4-0 out of 5 stars A True Original After All These Years
Nearly 35 years after its original Broadway premiere, Stephen Sondheim's "Company" remains one of the most unique and daring works of musical theatre ever. The true definition of a concept musical, the show enschews a traditional, linear plot in favor of vignettes that offer insight into the lives and psyches of married Manhatannites. The show is centered around Bobby, who is the only one of his friends who isn't married and trying to figure out why.

5-0 out of 5 stars An American Masterpiece, Great Recording
Rodgers and Hammerstein were so superior to any composers of the 40' and 50' (with the exception of Lerner and Lowe perhaps), they should be in their own category of music. Carousel holds up as one of the 4 or 5 greatest American musicals, and this revival clearly proved that (ironically produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company). This recording is magnificent in that it captures almost the entire score, including the ballet. Gritty, earthy and passionate, the two leads may not be the greatest of stage singers, but you can feel every ounce of yearning, sorrow and heartbreak in their voices. If I Loved You has never been recorded with such wrenching emotion before. And Michael Hayden's performance of Soliloquay is riveting. Hayden has since gone on to prove that he is one of the most talented actors currently working on the American stage.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
I own many recordings of Carousel and I have to say this one is, by far, the best.It has an emotional depth to it that other recordings don't quite match and the 'Carousel Waltz' sends shivers through me every time I hear it and Audra McDonald stands out as a shining star among the others in her singing.Excellent addition to anyone's CD collection!

2-0 out of 5 stars New versions superior to time-tested classics?
Despite being only sixteen, I have learned, watched and studied theatre, opera and such quite extensively. Rogers and Hammerstein are the reason I began to explore theatre in the first place. 'Carousel' was one of the last of their's I saw, and I have to say it is exceptional, its sheer theatricality and brilliance of writing is a true testament not only to Ferenc Molnar's Lilliom but to American musical theatre.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful music!
I have the movie soundtrack with Julie Andrews, a version with Mary Martin, but this is my favorite because it includes songs not heard in the movie: How Can Love Survive, No Way to Stop It, and Something Good.

5-0 out of 5 stars The hills are alive, with the sound of class!
I can'temagine a world without the sound of music!5-0 out of 5 stars Another beautifully done musical revival!
This is truly a beautiful CD.All of the songs are lovely and it's a great revival of the musical. Rebecca Luker makes a wonderful Maria. It truly deserves all of the stars it can get. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Go back to the original
Save your money and get the original WHO version of Townshend's masterpiece.I am a BIG fan of Pete Townshend but this CD is almost laughable: a pit band that tries to sound rock "heavy"; the overly slick production; every spect of the story is literally explained with lots ofvery unclever "hit the audience over the head" messages.Did the director really think us rock/theatre fans would like this? There is no subtext and everything is nauseatingly "on-the-nose" (e.g. the re-written "let's all get along" family ending almost makes me giggle, if it's not causing my stomache to turn.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Tommy original cast recording
I LOVE this album!! I haven't listened to it in ages but upon listening to it again it brings the show back into my head.I can picture what takes place during each scene by listening to the music again.I saw the show when it toured through about 12 years ago. I LOVED the show and must've seen it close to 20x before it left the L.A. area. This show just rocks and was such a fun show to see too!! If you saw this show either on Broadway or touring this is a must have in your collection. I highly recommend it if you're a Who fan too!

1-0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment
I don't know what the hoopla was all about; however, I didn't get to see the Broadway show. I thought they might have done something exciting with the piece, but it is very generic and old hat. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER'S FIRST MUSICAL
Joseph and the amazing Technicolor dreamcoat was Andrew Lloyd Webber's first all musical work and his first collaboration with his best lyricist Tim Rice. It all began when in 1967 Lloyd Webber and his friend Rice were commissioned by the head of music at Colet Court School, London, to write a religious concert for the school choir. Joseph was first presented in 1968 and, after further performances at St Paul's Cathedral and the Roundhouse in London, and the Edinburgh Festival, opened in the West End in 1973. It wasn't much of a success, however, until Webber bought the rights to it in the early 90-is, reworked it and put it on stage a very successful production that is still running and has been put in many other countries in the world and filmed for a special DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!
I have been a Broadway fan for about 18 years now. I tend to like the more Contemporary Music better. After comparing different recordings of "Godspell" I can definately say that this is the best one!! I love it sooooo much! Every song is catchy and the ending really gets to me sometimes. LOVES IT!
5-0 out of 5 stars great great great great great
Not a big fan of the original godspell, to be quite honest, but it had some good tunes.Phoenix productions did an outstanding job giving this show a few waves of wonderful. The music updates, as opposed as some may be to updating scores, are undeniably brilliant.Reading the concept on paper doesn't even touch what changes were made.Joe Carney rocks as Jesus, the ensemble is crisp and clear, and the band (which was all live, mind you - listen to the Vdrums) cranks out a mean funk.If you have any tangential interest in Godspell, pick this CD up, it'll move to the top of your musical theatre favorites. And bravo to Phoenix for taking the risk and putting it out there.

3-0 out of 5 stars The reason to own this recording is:
I'm not gonna lie and say I'm really a fan of this recording...HOWEVER: This album is to Natalie Joy Johnson what the 1963 BEST FOOT FORWARD album is to Liza Minnelli. That's all I have to say. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars What's The Big Deal?
Call me an old curmudgeon, but I never understood why everyone thought 42nd St was so wonderful. I saw the original cast and except for the two big songs, Lullaby of Broadway and 42nd St.( which, okay, were pretty spectacular ensemble dance numbers), the rest was kind of ho-hum, cornball nonsense set to a bunch of standards. Nothing original or ground breaking. Mindless fluff and very often done better. Had director/choreographer, t
