5-0 out of 5 stars How are you living without this?
I am a huge JRB fan and have every single CD of his, but by far this is my FAVORITE. The music on this album spans through so many styles that it is hard to believe a person could not find one song they liked. Not only is the music extremely enjoyable but Mr. Brown's lyrics are incredible. If you pick up only one CD in the next couple of weeks or months then make sure it is this one! Look out for more of Jason Robert Brown because he has lots left to write!
5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible!!!!
This is one of the greatest CDs ever recorded. Jason Robert Brown is an amazingly gifted songwriter and an incredible vocalist. Not to mention he must have made some pact with Satan or something to be able to play the piano like that.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
Wearing Someone Else's Clothes is one of my favorite CDs that I own. Jason Robert Brown is such an incredible musician. The CD is full of great songs, including "Someone To Fall Back On", "Nothing in Common", and "I Could Be in Love With Someone Like You."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recording of a great show!
Much like "Dreamgirls" after it, this album's concept was to play as a pop record to appeal to a broader audience, which is why there is a prologue instead of the show's full overture and some tracks fade out rather than end on a musical button. That aside, you have the great Stephanie Mills who originated the role of Dorothy, along with the sassy Andre de Shields in the title role and the awesome Mabel King as Evillene, the Wicked Witch, who later reprised her role in the 1978 film.As another reviewer mentioned earlier, missing are a few of the show's other gems:instrumentals, "Lion's Dream", "Emerald City Ballet", "Funky Monkeys", and vocal selections, "Who Do You Think You Are?", The Wiz's rendition of "If You Believe", and Glinda's beautiful anthem, "A Rested Body is a Rested Mind."Otherwise, a cast album worthy of any Broadway theater collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The orignal Broadway cast!
I saw this live performance and tried to tell my sweetheart about it. The movie didn't do the stage version justice! Now I own it. "Be a lion!"

4-0 out of 5 stars Soulful Oz !
Arriving in the spring of 1975, "The Wiz" ( a "soulful" take on "The Wizard Of Oz") was not an immediate hit. After an strong marketing campaign and a Tony for Best Musical, "The Wiz" enjoyed a long stay on Broadway.

2-0 out of 5 stars Far and away my favorite version
Porgy and Bess was originally staged as musical theater, with a tough schedule; and concessions were made to preserve the perfomers' voices. The concessions, (cuts mostly) kept it completely unpretentious. And of course it was under Gershwin's supervision.I find it much more satisfying than the more "grandly operatic" versions; and Todd Duncan is unequaled. The finale when Porgy sets out in his goat cart to find Bess is a heartbreaker, unequaled by any other version.
3-0 out of 5 stars Decca's very first "original cast" album!
Many people think OKLAHOMA! was the first (american) original cast album - the British had been making cast albums since the days of World War I - but in fact Decca had started the practice a few years earlier offering album sets of songs from movies (THE WIZARD OF OZ, HOLIDAY INN) and Broadway shows (PANAMA HATTIE, THIS IS THE ARMY.)
5-0 out of 5 stars it's got plenty of somethin'
this old recording, dating back to the late 30's, has poorer sound quality than later versions of P&B.it is tinny, with greater reliance on brass and horns and more tin-pan-alleyish and jazzy than later versions.however, that confirms its authentic charm and recommends its purchase.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a stunner of a score
PROMISES PROMISES was based on the popular Billy Wilder film "The Apartment", jazzed up with an energetic score from Burt Bacharach and Hal David (their sole musical theatre effort).
5-0 out of 5 stars Great '60s sound!
It's really great to have this cast recording available again! And so appropriate, given the passing of Jerry Orbach, that one of his best performances can again be purchased.

3-0 out of 5 stars Alan Cummings can ruin anything!
I am NOT an Alan Cummings fan, everything I have seen him do has grated on my nerves like chalk on a blackboard. Aside from him, terrific interpretation, realistic, and the other performances, Richardson imparticularly, are first rate. Never mind Richardsonsless than Minelliesque singing voice, she acts the part dead on, she IS what Sally Bowles would have been.

2-0 out of 5 stars I didn't see the show
But I am a big fan of the music. While I get the fact that Sally Bowles is supposed to be second-rate and I'm all for doing Cabaret as realistically as possible, I still find it extremely difficult to listen to Natasha's Richardson's singing.I just can't figure out why one would voluntarily subject oneself to something so terrible and painful to listen to.The patrons of the "real" Kit Kat Club were obviously really drunk and depressed while listening to Sally Bowles, but I'm not prepared to get wasted every time I want to listen to the music of Cabaret.I don't doubt that Natasha Richardson was great in the role, but maybe it was necessary to see her in the the show to derive pleasure from her songs here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Praise for Alan Cumming
As an amateur actor myself, it is incredible to hear the performance of Alan Cumming in this album. His voice almost lets us see his movements in thier emphasis, and he is able to translate every word of the songs with shocking emotion and purpose, something difficult to do for anyone. He is incredibly versitile; he is effeminate, risque, lustful, dirty, and raunchy, but still manages to display the sorrow and drama of his last songs. When singing "I don't care much," his performance brings tears to my eyes even after listening to it countless times. though the entire album is amazing, it would be worth it just to hear Alan. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Michael Crawfordwows with Andrew Lloyd Webber's Music
Thia CD is wonderful.I have heard others singing the same songs as the ones on this CD, but Michael Crawford not only sings the songs, he acts them.I also find that he is soothing to listen to.I could listen to this every day and be happy.I think it is interesting when men like to sing the songs they could not when they were in a musical including the songs that women had song. This CD starts with a song from JOSEPH AND HIS AMAZING TECHNICOLOR COAT that is excellent and goes on from there. Anyone who likes good music should enjoy this. If you like Michael Crawford, why not try Ron Raines who has two very good CDs?

4-0 out of 5 stars Michael Crawford Performs Andrew Lloyd Webber
I bought the CD because of "Phantom of the Opera".I heard a singer one time singing it and I thought they said it was Michael Feinstein but the only Michael I found was Crawford; he has a beautiful voice and is the original but did not sound like the voice I heard which was very unique.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love his voice
I've seen Michael Crawford in person and loved him and I this CD just adds to my great admiration of such a wonderful talent. Enjoy listening to him.

4-0 out of 5 stars I have got two defective Passion CD!!
I ordered a Passion CD but when I tried to play on all my players (Computer, Bose) it would "screw-up" on the first 8 or 9 tracks. I returned and Amazon quickly replaced. But when I the second CD it also did the same thing. I returned the CD and Amazon would not send a replacement due the fact that all may be defective. They did refund my money. Hopefully the manufacturer will get this fixed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goregous Operetta
If you're a fan of regular book musicals, this one is not for you!!! Passion is an operetta style love triangle that is complex, poignant, and beautiful. Stephen Sondheim's brillaint score ties the entrie musical together, which again helps him keep his genius status. The clever weaving of songs, scenes, and, most interestingly, letters, make for a great cast album.
5-0 out of 5 stars Original and Powerful Stuff
I saw "Passion" on Broadway and was angry and at the time disappointed. There aren't any set pieces. It's one act and told with a seeming simplicity that is deeper than the deep, blue sea.

I personally prefer Rebecca Caine over Sarah Brightman, but it doesn't matter. This was a beautiful recording. :D

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Musical Phenomenon!
After 20 years since it opened, THE PHANTOM has become the longest running, most popular stage show, and highest grossing Entertainment venture of all time, bringing in more earnings than any other stage show, any movie, (including the series of Star wars, Titanic, and Lord of the Rings)!! This Double disc volume of the original London cast is a Spectacular Rendition of this timeless Masterpiece. Not only are the performances by the entire Cast including 'THE' Phantom himself, Michael Crawford, who's melodic, extraordinary range and powerful vocals, make for fantastic Vocal tracks that capture the essence of 'Phantom,' but the Score and the way the orchestra plays it is powerful and very Full. Compared to both the Canadian Cast recording and Movie Record, The London Cast's Orchestra is by far the Most Full sounding overall.
4-0 out of 5 stars 75% more words!And 20% less carbs!
At the time that I'm writing this review there are 379 reviews for the original 1986 London cast recording of "The Phantom of the Opera".It can be safely surmised that many people have opinions about this particular hallmark of musical theater. It also seems requisite that any reviews written after 2004 must bring up the movie soundtrack and compare the two leads, with varying levels of love for one and hate for the other.I shall attempt to summarize some of the more frequently repeated comments here, attempting to adhere to bare facts while impressing as little opinion as possible into what is a very personal musical.

This terrific new recording of Cole Porter's greatest show grabs you from the beginning: shimmering strings lead straight into "Another Op'nin', Another Show" before the orchestra takes over. Then it's on to many of Porter's best-loved melodies and wittiest lyrics, including "Wunderbar," "So in Love," "Always True to You (In My Fashion)," and "Why Can't You Behave?" Art imitates life in this story of a troupe's performance of Shakespeare's Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars broadway buff
This is a case of fixing something that ain't broke. Cole Porter is a master of musical score, his genius lies in the superbly witty blend of the story line, lyrics, and score. Technically this recording may be superior to the original 1950 Broadway version, but that's all. Modifying the score is an interesting effort but inferior to the original. The singing voices of the actors in this new Broadway cast probably appeal to the less-well trained ear of to-day's young adults, but to someone a bit older than that these, their voices sound ill trained, screechy and oblivious of the original score and lyrics. Cole Porter's elegant wit blows completly by them.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Version out there!
I have to say this totally changed my views on Kiss Me Kate. After seeing the movie I thought it was good, but at times to operatic and it made my ears ring too much. After buying the broadway cast CD I pretty much put this musical in the catorgory of musicals I just didn't like that much.I got the new cast album as a gift and was hesitant to listen to it.I put it on in the background and was so suprized! Finally instead of the normal sing ever song the same operatic way these actors were feeling there music!I mean I can see why some would perfer the ballad operatic tones in "I hate Men" and "always true to you" because that's how they were always done, but I loved the attitude that this cast displayed by her snariling angry version of I hate men and the none operatic "Always True to You".There were countless other songs I enjoyed so much more beacause they didn't cause you to go death from having the same operatic ring to them. This version of Kiss Me Kate is the best ever!

4-0 out of 5 stars zesty new revival of the Cole Porter classic
The 1999 Broadway revival of KISS ME KATE was a big success, running nearly 3 years and spawning a national tour as well as a London production (which was taped for DVD release). The cast album is a real delight.Brian Stokes Mitchell (KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN, MAN OF LA MANCHA) is a grand Fred Graham, and Marin Mazzie is a thrilling Lilli Vanessi, the feuding ex-spouses starring in a musical version of Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew".Michael Berresse and Amy Spanger add a playful sexiness to their performamces as Bill Calhoun and Lois Lane, with Adriane Lenox as a perfectly-belted Hattie. The orchestrations by Don Sebesky are bright and full of bounce; I especially love the bluesy arrangement of "So in Love".This cast album is highly-recommended if you already own the OBC with Alfred Drake, Patricia Morison and Lisa Kirk. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars OMG AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME
I saw this amazing show while in Gettysburg where it is now called FOR THE GLORY and believe me they need to put this back on broadway! The music is so moving yet its so modern it really catches the younger crowd. Getting this cd just brings me back to the theatre where I experienced this awesome musical!
5-0 out of 5 stars VERY powerful
I saw this in NYC. I have this on CD and on my iPod. This is the most powerful album I ever heard. This album really communicates the pain everyone felt during the Civil War. Hootie and the Blowfish's song, "Freedom's Child", sounds like a rallying cry for all black people living in that difficult time. Linda Eder is her usual exemplary self and Amy Grant, Trisha Yearwood, Carl Anderson and other artists add to the experience. This is an excellent compliation which balances country, pop and even narration and a bit of rock, with Shiloh's track, "Judgement Day." In total, this is an extremely highly recommendable album, featuring 39 tracks of good, solid music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Laguardia isn't just an airport
Fiorello! was basically a play about New York City's great mayor, Fiorello Laguardia, that was turned into a musical by having an overture and 14 songs. Long ago, back in the late 1950s, I saw it as a child and really liked it - I've always wondered what it would be like to hear it again. Well, it is nothing less than spectacular! It has the best song about politcal corruption (!) ever written, Little Tin Box; a great song about a broken date, Marie's Law; a lyrical paean to back-room politics, Politics and Poker; and 11 others, all equally good (in fact, there's not a single dud in the score - as you would expect since it was written by the writers who did Fiddler on the Roof). The voices are great, the lyrics are all to the point, the music is unforgettable, and, for all those who don't know the story, the disc notes are really helpful.Maybe this is politcs seen through rose-tinted glasses, but it's wonderful to hear!

4-0 out of 5 stars a classic, underrated Broadway gem
FIORELLO! is a lovely, ahead-of-its-time musical, based on the career of New York mayor Fiorello La Guardia. It starred Tom Bosley as La Guardia with a dream cast including Ellen Hanley, Pat Stanley and Eileen Rodgers.5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent musical
I first heard of this musical when my grampa had me listen to it and I've loved it ever since! The songs are terrific (Fiorello La Guardia, unfair, politics and poker!)-to make a long story short it was a great musical about a great man which should be reviewed and put on video! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sondheim's Masterpiece
Five stars for the material, not the recording. This will go down in history as Sondheims greatest achievement. Also, probably one of thefive or six greatest musicals of all time. Sadly though, it's greatness lies in it's original production. I saw it several times (young as I was then) and it was flawless. I don't think we realized it at the time. The cast was magnificent and can never be duplicated. Alexis Smith was incomparable, Dorothy Collins sublime. Her rendition of Losing My Mind is probably definitive (though Barbra Cook comes pretty close in concert), but to see Collins in a solid Harlowesque silver gown, back arched and perfectly still, delivering the song with such heartbreaking longing, was one of the rare great moments in theater. The leading men, John McMartin and Gene Nelson were perfectly cast (though McMartin was actually 20 yrs too young at the time, still he was totally convincing). As for the supporting cast, simply astonishing. Mary McCarty, the great Yvonne DeCarlo, Terry Saunders, Ethel Shutta (who stopped the show nightly with Broadway Baby), Fifi D'Orsay, etc. can never be assembled again.
5-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete But Satisfying Nonetheless
I was privileged to see Follies in its initial Broadway run three times, including the most memorable and emotional closing night I have ever spent in a Broadway theatre.Follies remains my favorite Sondheim musical (and Sondheim remains my favorite Broadway composer) even though I admit that those who consider Sweeney Todd his masterpiece certainly have good reasons for doing so.The Follies "highlight" original cast album - funny it wasn't released that way - it was released simply as "the cast album" - is a bittersweet experience; to this day, I regret as do other reviewers here that the producers could not see their way to releasing a two-disc complete recording. It's not so much the numbers that were completely left out as the songs that were butchered and cut to their bare essentials that one regrets most.I can live without "Loveland", but the loss of almost half of the lyrics to "I'm Still Here" and "Broadway Baby" are omissions that have puzzled me since the day this abortion of a cast album (as my ex-boyfriend called it at the time) was released.Although most of this has already been said, the main reason I wanted to add my two-cents was to trumpet the song that for some reason is one of the least mentioned but, for me, the most impressive."Too Many Mornings' is, to me, both lyrically and musically the most touching, heartbreaking and emotionally potent song that Mr. Sondheim ever wrote. The sentiment behind the lyric is one that makes me literally choke up with tears and is still capable - 34 years after I first heard it - of making me break out in goose bumps."Two many mornings, waking and pretending I reach for you, thousands of mornings, dreaming of my girl. All that time, wasted, merely passing through, time I could have spent, so content, wasting time with you..."To me, this song captured the essence of what the show was really about - the heartache of waking up one day, irreversibly older, and finding that you didn't do with your life anything that you dreamed of or idealized in your younger days.As I recall John McMartin remarking on a TV talk show just a few days after Follies ended it's Broadway run, "It's a very painful, tragic show to watch unfold, and the more I am privileged to work with this material, the more I get out of it".The deceptively simple book of this show masked the powerful emotional punch of all that it really had to say.I understood when I was 17 (which I was in 1971) that this was a melancholy and achingly poignant show; time has only deepened and expanded the emotional experience that this recording grants with every listen.

1-0 out of 5 stars Thrash the producer of this disc!
I sat through this show three times in its original Broadway run, and I was never so amazed at what I was seeing and hearing.Pure genius. Then the single vinyl album was released and the true record of this show was lost forever.I listen to the chopped up Sondheim score, with hardly any dance orchestrations and missing choruses, and I'm truely saddened.(That same year a two disc album was released of "Two Gentlemen of Verona," so two disc albums were not unheard of.)What remains is just a reminder of what could have been, a cast album for the ages. The show gets five stars, but whoever made the decision to cheapen this one disc, gets one star, and doesn't even deserve that. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
Very few revue shows are as satisfying as this one. I'm obsessed with the finale right now; can't get enough of it! The cast is stellar, and it's very obvious that each song is telling its own story. What makes it outstanding are the arrangements.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, Late Nell Carter
What a shame that Nell Carter didn't do more theater or sing more than she did. I would have loved to have seen and heard her do more. An incredible voice. How sad that she passed so young. I had the pleasure of meeting her and talking with her at length in 1984, and she was as warm and charming as could be. A lovely woman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Broadway musical of 1978 - hand down!!!
Fans of Fats Waller should all have this in their collection. The night I went to see the show was so close to what is on the CD - it's amazing. This CD allows me to re-live that magical evening.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I absolutely love this musical. It was the first broadway musical I ever saw - I saw it about 10 years ago.We bought this CD right afterward and went on a family vacation to Europe soon after... this CD was played throughout the ENTIRE trip.I know every word to every song, and to me it never gets old!! I ended up being in the play and seeing the movie with Donny Osmond as well, but I always loved this version the most and finally found it on Amazon. This is an absolutely incredible version, I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still great after all this time
I have seen the DVD version of this play with Donnie Osmond in the lead as JOSEPH, and while he did a good job, Michael Damian outshines his vocal performance by far. I think his voice fits this role quite well and I am still enjoying this version of the soundtrack, 12 years later. I received the cd as a Christmas gift in 1993, and I have almost wore it out because I enjoy it so much. Now, my 7 yr old son loves the music just as much as I do. I have added this wonderful musical on my IPOD player. Also, I think that Kellie Rabke, who portrays the NARRATOR, has a phenominal voice. I like her much better than the young lady who is in the DVD with Donnie Osmond. Even though I like to watch it better than listening to it, I find that the vocal performances of the cast do not reflect those of the cd. I would reccommend this cast album for anyone who has already seen or plans to see this play. I am finally going to see it live when it comes to my city in February 2006. Needless to say, I am very excited to see it and I can only hope for vocals as strong as those in this cast.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good But Other Albums Are Better
The classic story of Joseph and his multicolored coat in musical form! This is a good album if you wanna hear pretty voices singing, but if you want energy and passion, I suggest finding a different version of this musical's soundtrack like the Canadian version.

5-0 out of 5 stars Johnny's Greatest Hits - The First of The Greatest Hits Genre and Still One of The Best
Many people do not know that Johnny's Greatest Hits was the first album to be titled as such...
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonferful, wonderful!
In my opinion, ballad singers like Johnny Mathis are falling off the radar.Tt's probably a generational thing and it's a shame, because oh!that voice! It's arguably the best of the type, smooth and sweet.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful music...but

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Broadway from "Oklahoma" to "Phantom"
You might quibble with some of the songs selected for "The Best of Broadway" but the twenty musicals represented in this cast recording anthology is pretty good.I would have picked something other than "Sue Me" from "Guys and Dolls" and as much as I love Barbara Cook it is hard not to have Robert Preston singing something from "The Music Man."These twenty songs represent the best of both the old and new Broadway, with the division coming between "Mame" and "Jesus Christ Superstar." Okay, I would have had something from "Hair" in between those two and passed on Tommy Tune, but then I really, really, like to quibble. The only problem is that if you love Broadway musicals, then there is a good chance you have all of these songs if not all of these versions (I have Ethel Merman instead of Martin on "No Business Like Show Business") in your music collection already. But as an introduction for someone of what has happened in Broadway musical theater since the currently revived "Oklahoma" first opened, this is a superb collection.
