2-0 out of 5 stars Get the film soundtrack
So-so revival. The film soundtrack is far superior, the cast is perfect and Ellen Greene will always be the definitive Audrey (woman, not plant).

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun
I really enjoyed this soundtrack; it's has a 50s-ish style to it which can be really catchy sometimes. The vocals are nice and the music sounds great. Another must-have for those who enjoy Broadway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Utterly Exuberant!
Little Shop of Horrors blends comedy with horror to ultimately produce an incredibly entertaining musical comedy. This recording is about as close as you can get to Broadway without actually going. The sound quality is superb; you can almost imagine yourself in the theatre.Kerry Butler and Hunter Foster both put in great performances. What I believe makes this recording so good though, is the outstanding support performances. There isn't a weak voice in the lot.Dequina Moore, Trisha Jeffrey, and Carla J. Hargrove are so much fun! Michael-Leon Wooley is an outstanding Audey II.As an added bonus, this cd contains 5 bonus tracks that are in the original film, but not the musical.Personally, I think the extra tracks are musically inferior to the rest of the cd, but extra tracks are always a plus!Talent and quality wise, this cast recording is miles ahead of the movie soundtrack. This is the definitive Little Shop recording. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Musical With Some Outstanding Performers
This re-adaptation of Kurt Weill's adaptation of The Beggars' Opera is full of heartfelt expression of wry digs at conventionality. This particular cast includes some superb expressive singers, such as Lotte Lenya, Bea Arthur and Cholotte Rae - the last two to become excellent, and famous, commedienes. The brash, rudimentary jazz score adds to the power of it all, making the entire endeavor a cohesive unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars threepenny opera blitzstein
I love the "directly off the stage," unhyped qulity of the recording.I just watched the Studio 54 version and I'm grateful they did it.But Lenya & co. got them beat 90 ways.I'm pretty sure this must have been the version that thrilled me when I heard it in a Berkeley CA apt. during 1961 spring break from UCLA.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sound off!
I remember when this show was playing off Broadway at the Theater de Lys on Christopher Street in NYC.I purchased the album on LP (MGM label) way back then, which I lost along the way and replaced with another LP issued on a different label. This one went the way of all discs too, so I finally located this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Les Miz Recording Out There
Now don't you disregard this because it says I'm a kid. I am very experienced in theatre and know exactly what I am talking about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great that Ruffelle wasn't around to ruin this recording!
The TAC version is undoubtedly the best Les Miserables recording available! It's live, the orchestra is full, and best of all, the casting is great. It's a great relief that the production hired Miss Saigon's Salonga to do Eponine -- we have FINALLY have someone who not only emotes Eponine well, but can actually sing her lines -- the first two recordings (London and Broadway) treated us to a poor excuse of a musical theater actor who couldn't deliver lines clearly and who could barely stay in tune. Salonga, along with the other actors here, shows what the term Dream Cast means.
5-0 out of 5 stars Les Mis is Les Magnifique
I encountered Les Miserables through this particular performance. I bought the movie with the live performance and at first thought ewwwww. I was not big into musicals and my closest things to musical knowledge was listening to Phantom of the Opera and Jekyll And Hyde. Of course I bought the DVD of (David)Hasselhoff's performance. Point being, this version of Les Miserables changed my outlook on musicals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Little Shop At Its Musical Best
The filmrecording of Little Shop is the best recording of the score yet (despite missing many of the stage version's more superflous and campy ditties)The vocal arangements and orchestrations are the best and most appropriately complementary to the piece. They capture the sound, and spirit in full and with fun and excitement. The cast is superb, and Ellen Greene proved herself quite brilliant in her ability to adapt her stage performance for the small size of film. The performance of Levi Stubbs, criticized on this site, is actually the BEST interpretation and vocal performance of Audrey II to date, anywhere. It is the only performance to truly bring the role to life and is damn funny. The cuts and changes are all logical for the medium of film, and obviously approved of as they were made by Howard Ashman himself. The original off-broadway cast (yes, the show was NOT an official broadway show, therefore could not have won a tony for anyone) is the next best recording. But to those who harp on the film for cutting the stage songs, the original cast album is not the full score, and has cuts made as well. The New Broadway Cast recording, which had great potential and money behind it, is the full stage score.Yet the worst in orchestration, quality, and casting to date. Though bland enough to easily digest, it is no where close to the film's sound and energy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack
Nice adaptation of the show to the screen. Rick Moranis in the best part of his career. And having Ellen Greene preserved on film as Audrey is wonderful. One of the best musical comedy performances of the 80's. Too bad the original was an Off-Broadway production. She deserved a Tony.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Music is a Spoonful of Sugar for all!
Every child should have this CD if not for it's content (it's grrreat!) then for its "historical" value in exposing them to some of the musicals their parents grew up with.I wish there were more CDs like this - I would own them all.The only down-side is there are no accompanying lyrics but at least there's an address you can use to request them (free).Excellent!

My toddler loves music and this is OUR favorite CD.I love show tunes and these are great selections for kids.I appreciate the fact that the songs are sung by the broadway casts.I know that kids like to hear other kids sing, but sometimes mom needs a break from those cheerful, slightly off-key kids choruses. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Fly Away from this new CD :(
I honestly cannot stand the fact that people think that this CD is one of the greatest from Sarah Brightman ever!I cannot stand her singing like the 80s song "Barbie Girl".Her voice is now so "nasaly" that it's almost impossible to listen to her.The one and only best track on the album has to be "A Question of Honour", for it shows off Brightman's operatic ability.I just can't take the Pop Sarah! Please, someone convince her to go back to classical!I would dissuade you from buying this CD because it is almost unbearable to listen to!If you want something that sounds like the old Sarah from The Phantom of the Opera, then purchase the sound track or buy Surrender - The Unexpected Songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it...
"Fly" by Sarah Brightman is a wonderful cd. Sarah truly rocks on this album. It shows how diverse she can be. Sarah has an amazing voice whether she is singing classical songs, or rock songs (as on this album). Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting and beautiful and a break from the norm @}->---
I love Sarah's voice. She is truly unique and distinctive. This album is another stunning and haunting piece of work. It's so good and amazing and you've really got to hear it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deserves a place in your Sondheim Discography
Like other reviewers I was fortunate enough to see Roundabout's revival production but perhaps unfortunate that my total enjoyment of that production may bias my critical listening.I can't help but recall the proprietor (Marc Kudish) caressing a pistol into thehand of each assassin when listening to the opening Everybody's Got The Right.
2-0 out of 5 stars Dashed high hopes
Assassins is a fascinating and surprising show. You can't imagine a more unlikely topic for a musical and yet, when you hear and/or see the show, you can't help to be impressed by the entire production.Maybe if I'd never heard the original cast recording, I would have given this a higher rating, but, to be frank, this recording suffers in comparison to the original recording in nearly every way.
3-0 out of 5 stars Letdown from the original
I have been a huge fan of Assassins since it first came out back in '91.While I've never had the pleasure of seeing the play in person, I've read it several times and listened to the original cast recording so often one can hardly believe it.So when I saw "Broadway Cast Recording" I was thrilled. Then I listened to it.I went from thrilled to appalled.

5-0 out of 5 stars BROADWAY
My schools 8th grade play was Once On This Island and I loved it so i'm gonna buy this cd! you should too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Authenic and Beautiful Work
The team of Flaherty and Ahrens truly blew me away with "Ragtime", and I didn't anything could come close to that power. While "Once On This Island" is nothing like "Ragtime" in terms of gandeur, it still is a wonderful work filled with some wonderful music. The ensemble on this recording sounds exactly as they should in my opinion, and they perfectly depict people on a magical island. The story is also one that I enjoyed in that it was very simple, yet had a great message. While the vocal work provided by the ensemble is great, it is LaChanze who truly makes this recording soar. Her voice is like that of a goddess, and she makes all of the emotions of Ti Moune come alive, especially in "Waiting For Life", which is this recording's star number.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning and flawless Musical Fairy Tale
This musical represents all that is RIGHT with new musicals. Flaherty creates musical themes that recur throughout the piece and Ahrens' lyrics are brilliant. Through this musical, which I saw in NY 7 times, I was introduced to the talent of La Chanze and now as the lead in Color Purple, the world is getting another glimpse at what a great singer she is. Listening to her interpret a song is beautiful. For those who never had the privilege of seeing the show, we can all thank our stars that the production lives on forever in recording. Many other notable performers fromMilton Craig Nealy (Rain) to Kecia Lewis Evans (Mama Will Provide) to Jerry Dixon (Some Girls)to Eric Riley (in every stand out number), this cast recording is worth every penny. I am on my 2nd copy and rapidly working toward my 3rd. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun!
This CD has a permanent place in the pantheon of music everyone in our family enjoys and after a year we're still loving it. The music is a delight and lyrics clever. You don't need to see the musical to appreciate it. The songs tell the Frog and Toad stories so well anyone can enjoy them. But if you do get the chance to see it, GO! We took our 3 year old (even though we didn't know if he'd get it) and he loved every minute of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely as charming as it can be...
This refreshingly charming score comes through delightfully on this album - and with a cast this fantastic (Frank Vlastnik and Danielle Ferland should do more albums, that's all I'm saying...), there is nothing not to completely adore! "Getta Loada Toad" and "I'm Coming Out of My Shell" are worth the price of the disc alone! Though this PS Classics release was slightly more than a tad frustrating to those of us who'd already purchased the album in its initial incarnation, it cannot be argued that having this recording commercially available like this (and with beautiful color photos in such a lavish booklet) is a fabulous thing at the very least!

5-0 out of 5 stars Family Favorite

Editorial Review

This 1999 revival of Irving Berlin's timeless 1946 musical fantasy depictingthe love affair between Wild West sharpshooting stars Annie Oakley and Frank Butlerhas been somewhat updated for modern times. Not only has Peter Stone made revisions to Herbert and Dorothy Fields's original book (the story is now a show within a show, namely Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show), but there have been revisions to Berlin's original score as well. Some of it relates directly to late-'90s political correctness--"I'm an Indian, Too" joins "Colonel Buffalo Bill" and "I'm a Bad Bad Man" among the exclusions. But the tunes that made the cut remain some of the greatest moments of American musical theater, which is especially ironic when one considers that Berlin had to be coaxed into writing the show after original composer Jerome Kern suddenly died. Many of these songs--"They Say It's Wonderful," "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly," "I Got the Sun in theMorning," "The Girl That I Marry," "Anything You Can Do"--have become standards on their own, and the revival thankfully retains the wonderful "An Old Fashioned Wedding," which Berlin wrote for the 1966 Lincoln Center revival of the show, with original Annie Ethel Merman reprising the role. Years after the fact, Merman remains a tough image to follow. But while she lacks Merman's brass and crassness, Bernadette Peters stands as the prettiest and sexiest Annie to date, even in the shadows of Mary Martin and Betty Hutton (the latter in the 1950 film version), not to mention probably the greatest singer of the bunch--her "You Can't Get a Man with a Gun" is an instant Broadway classic. They overdo "There's No Business Like Show Business" just a tad in this new version; it's seemingly reprised endlessly early in the CD. But, hey, if you're going to overdo it, what a song to overdo it with. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars 3.5, but Original is better.
The 1946 Original version is better for many reasons, but the main two are: it has a completer song list, and it isnt affected by Burnadette Peters. If you are a Peters fan, this is fine for you, but her voice just grinds on me and I can't stand it. Plus one of my favorite songs "I'm a Bad, Bad Man" isnt on this recording but is on the other. There are really no other differences between the show. Favorite Songs: "They Say It's Wonderful"

4-0 out of 5 stars A good revival album
We did this show when I was in high school, but I didn't buy it until after we did the show.I just hadn't caught on that when doing a musical, buy the soundtrack and rehearse with it.Anyway back to the review, we practiced dancing with some of the numbers using this cd.So, I decided to buy it.Overall I like it very much.I'm not a huge Bernadette Peters fan, but I do like her.She didn't quite seem right for the part, but her singing makes up for it.Other than that the rest of the cast is great! The music is more updated which makes it more appealing to today's listeners.I just wished they would have released the new album with Reba McEntire doing the lead. She was playing when I was in New York, but of course it was completely sold out.

My high school is doing Forum for there musical this year (I play Erronius by the way..), and this play is hysterical.Although, the movie conversion was totally crappy. The stage version is funnier. The most original musical of the past ten years, with the freshest new star, Deven May.The show got raves off-Broadway, but closed when 9/11 shut down New York. Then, to popular demand, it reopened and ran several more months. An incredible cast, with May, Kaitlin Hopkns, Kerry Butler, Sean McCourt, Trent Armand Kendall, Doug Storm, and Cathy Briers. The show ran six months in London. The composer has written the new Broadway musical of "Legally Blonde," and Deven May is starring in the national tour of "Jersey Boys.""BatBoy" is already the most popular choice for college and community theatres. IT ROCKS, and has a message for everyone.San Francisco did a production last Halloween, and it proved so popular they are making it an annual event.

5-0 out of 5 stars Diverse music that grows on you
I was in a production of Children of Eden and did not like the music at first. It definitely grows on you and is extremly moving at times, especially the finale "Children of Eden".My favorite though is "Ain't it Good" which I hated when I first heard it.Very good show but remember it is a show and don't get into theological discussions about it's suppossed misrepresentations of the Old Testament. It's fiction and doesn't propose to be anything else.

4-0 out of 5 stars As good as any musical recording...
I'm not any sort of theatre expert, so I won't pretend to offer the critical analysis that some other reviewers have provided (rather snobbishly, I might add).Ultimately, I think that this recording is absolutely brilliant. In contrast to some critics, I think that the musical variety contained within this show is stunning, yet I felt like Schwartz was up to the challenge throughout the show, regardless of the style which he was using for a given song.Take note of "In Pursuit of Excellence" as a perfect example of a totally unique, but absolutely engaging song.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic.
I am Pagan, and yet, this is the most moving soundtrack I have ever heard. It isn't about religion, is it? It's about family. It's about parents learning to let their children go, knowing they might let them fall but also knowing it has to happen for them to learn. The way that Father - AKA God - is just a parent, an angry parent trying to shield his children but not knowing how, really brings religion home. First off, I think every Christian should hear this musical. This is what I always thought Christianity should be: God isn't some big guy, he's a dad, end of story. Secondly, every parent and child should hear this, AKA everyone. This definetly made me appreciate the struggles I had with my own parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought.
What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1-0 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better
Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

4-0 out of 5 stars An underrated musical
This musical seems to be very underrated, because it isn't done in a traditional style. There is no set storyline or characters. It is essentially a grouping of songs about different people and the work they do in their lives. Some of the songs are very powerful, like "Millworker", and some are just fun, like "Lovin' Al".Some songs date the recording, as songs like "Brother Trucker", while good, have a bit of a synthesized 70's feel. The majority of the songs are more traditional.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Lesser Known Gem
I have never seen Working, but would love to, and I would love to perform it so as to revive interest in it. I found out about this recording from an online site, and I fell in love with it. It's a very modern style musical although from 1978. Were it on Broadway today, it would still be revelent to today's working class. My favorite number probably has to be "It's An Art", just because of its sheer fun. I could listen to that song all day and never get bored with it. I do, however, find "Brother Trucker" to be a bit tiring, and "Neat To Be A Newsboy" is just plain old, outdated, and ANNOYING! Other than that, wonderful ablum for an almost forgetten show.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep Working!!!
I had the privilege of seeing a production of this wonderful musical at L.A. Valley College in May 2004. I quickly fell in love with the songs and the entire premise of the musical. Now, with this CD, I can finally sing along to all the brilliant songs over and over again, belting them out like there is no tomorrow.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER'S MOST SOLEMN PIECE OF MUSIC
When Andrew Lloyd Webber's father William, a classical composer in his own right, died in 1982, his by that time famous son decided to commemorate his death with a piece of newly composed music. But it was not the musical that ALW had in mind for this intimate occasion; he rather returned to his own classical roots he acquired while frequenting the Westminster music school, where his father was an organist.
