5-0 out of 5 stars Peter pan: Original Broadway Cast Recording
I was fortunate enough to record the Mary Martin TV version of Peter Pan and want to know if it was ever put out in VHS or DVD if so where can I get it. I'd like to keep this wonderful version of Peter Pan for my grandchildren.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mary Martin will "never grow old"
Though other Peter Pan performances have been decent, there's no other performance that could match the wonderfully talented Mary Martin, nor the rest of the cast. If you wish to get a good find, this is the ultimate version to buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Mary
I've loved this movie and seen it over 100 times, and each time I've adored it even more.I love the fact that a women (Mary Martin) plays peter. My school did Peter Pan, and I got the part of Peter because I showed this film to my drama teacher. (she didn't think girls could play peter) So all I want to say is Thanks Mary Martin for your inspiration ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A near-perfect recording
Chicago is a classic, and that classic status remains in the revival recording. Bebe Neurwith is truly a delight as Velma Kelly, and shines in the star number of "All That Jazz", but it's the men who steal the show. James Naughten and Joel Grey are perfect as Billy Flynn and Amos Hart. Every single one their numbers is absolutely perfect are true classics. There are, however, two downsides. First is that the film soundtrack exceeds vocally with Catherine Zeta-Jones as a belting Velma. Second, and ultimately, Anne Reinking's rendition of "Roxie" is downright awful. I love her versions of "Funney Honey" and "Me and My Baby", but "Roxie" is disgusting. In all, however, a wonderful, fun, and classic recording.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't be so harsh on Ann
I understand that many of you who have bought this CD will be Broadway lovers (and I am one myself)and you will be used to the lead roles having amazing powerful voices. But just as important as good singing is good acting. I think that Ann interpreted Roxie as a wannabe who had the enthusiasm but lacked the talent, which makes her raspy tones and sing-speak completely plausible. It also supports the theme that you can use other things than talent to get yourself to the top This may not be the way you like Roxie played, but you shouldn't shun Ann's interpretation. It's a good thing if there is more than one way of having a character played, I think so anyway.
2-0 out of 5 stars Good, But Not Great.
The revival edition of CHICAGO could be a whole lot better (like the original or the movie soundtrack.) But it is good none the less.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only broadway album you'll ever need
From West Side Story to Showgirls. defenitly the only album you need. Not only it has the best scores from the best shows in broadway, the're sing by the stars who made them a hits.

2-0 out of 5 stars You Can Find These Songs Anywhere
I'm 12 years old, and I ADORE broadway, and opera. I've starred in some musicals and a few plays. If you know broadway... then you know these songs from many dvds, and musical soundracks. The songs are excelent, but there's nothing special about this album.(You could probally hear (and see) these classics on every other cd or dvd that has "Broadway's best") It might be worth buying if you're not familiar with musicals. Makes a great gift! I reccomend buying Broadway's Lost Treasures, edition 1. You can see all of these performed live!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding collection of 50 years of Broadway hits
A 2-disc set worthy of its "ultimate" title, this compilation pleases casual and serious musical fans alike. It's a great introduction to over 50 years of Broadway hits, and it captures the spirit and change of American musical theater through the twentieth century - from Rodgers and Hammerstein's pioneering "Oklahoma!" to Jonathan Larsen's ground-breaking "Rent," and every hit in between. This collection not only allows you to sample the great shows and songs but also the premiere recordings. Featured artists include Carol Channing, Ethel Merman, Mary Martin, Julie Andrews, Chita Rivera, and Elaine Paige among many other brilliant stars. Most tracks come from the original Broadway cast recordings, with some surprises.Aretha Franklin has a smoky, and stunning, rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" from "Les Miserables."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You Can't Compare Apples and Oranges
This CD is AMAZING. To compare it to "New World" is unfair to both composers. Both are wonderful recordings of great songs. Yes, these are more introspective, but beautifully so. I suggest buying both.

1-0 out of 5 stars Saccharine Sickly Sweet
If you have a taste for hyper-earnest sentiment and treacle, this is the CD for you.
5-0 out of 5 stars An absolutely beautiful recording
The cast in this recording is absolutely phenomenal, and the music of John Bucchino showcases the depth and beauty of his talent. Each song is a heartbreak, starting with Creel's stunning "Unexpressed" to Porter's poignant "Grateful."

The big winners at the 1999 Tony Awards were revivals or old dance numbers recycled into new shows.Yet earning the most nominations, nine (and taking home two awards, for book and original score), was an honest-to-goodness new American musical by a young American composer-lyricist, Jason Robert Brown (who was 28 when the show premiered at Lincoln Center in December 1998 and was best known for his song cycle Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Last Five Years is Better
The score for "Parade" is not bad, but I enjoyed Brown's "The Last Five Years" so much more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Passionate
My first exposure to Jason Robert Brown was The Last 5 Years. After hearing this, I thought that it didn't live up to it's hype, so I was a little skeptic about Parade. This one, however, delievers. From the grand opening of "The Old Red Hills of Home", I knew this was something special. The story in this is a deep and tragic tale that really tugs at the heart strings. I really felt for this poor man that was being accused of this crime, but felt even more for Mary Phagan. The moving ballad "It Don't Make Sense" is one that could have probably have been used after Columbine to depict the agony felt there. Overall, I think that the story combined with the big and powerful music really served this incredible story justice. The final duet "All The Wasted Time" really summed up the entire relationship of the two leads, and it made it so hard to say goodbye to Leo. Jason Robert Brown truly impressed with this recording, which is one the best Broadway soundtracks I've heard. I think I'll give The Last 5 Years another try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Memorable Musical of the 1990s
Lots of people have reviewed Parade, saying that the show contains little memorable songs or catchy melodies. Not only is this inaccurate (see "It Don't Make Sense" or "It's Hard To Speak My Heart"), but since this is a musical it really shouldn't matter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heavenly Record
An absolutely wonderful and Heavenly Record.Could listen to it over and over again.Saw Michael Crawford in "Phantom of the Opera" and was absolutely bowled over by his voice,no hint of which we had been given in his UK TV work.I was simply looking for a recording of "On Eagles Wings" and when his name came up as singing it, had no hesitation to buying his version.Would like to rate it higherthan 5 stars!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Michael Crawford shines!
If anyone is not a Michael Crawford fan when they purchase this item, when the last note of the last song is done.. I guarantee you will be.The man can carry a note and his voice is that of an angel! Michael includes Christian songs in his concerts, so be sure to get the IN CONCERT DVD only because it can just give more of the experience of the CD of the same name. You can listen to him all day if you choose to, you will not tire of his singing. It is melodic, soft, dramatic, electic and just heavenly.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is ESSENTIAL
I am a huge Mathis fan and this 2 cd set covers a good part of his career. It was nice to hear some live recordingd. It has been in my player non stop.

5-0 out of 5 stars When did I get old?
I have been listening to Johnnie Mathis for over 40 years. And, while I did "stray" from his music in my 30's, I have found that as the years go by, I am making my way back to him. This is an album that does exactly that: takes me back to his music that I know and love.Regardless of your mood, there is a song on this album for you. When I listen, certain songs bring back very, very fond memories, while others are used to create new ones in my life today. It's an album worth having.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding balladeer
Johnny was one of the most successful balladeers of the twentieth century although he does not get the recognition that he deserves for his achievements. This compilation includes most of the songs for which he is famous, together with a selection of other tracks that demonstrate his brilliance. Three British top ten hits (Someone, My love for you, I'm stone in love with you) are omitted but those seeking the definitive British hits collection should go for the earlier double CD, Very best of Johnny Mathis, which contains all his British hits, however minor. This set, compiled in America, offers a very different selection of songs although there is some duplication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not AnythingBut One of the Best
I have heared many recordings for Cole Porter 's " Anything Goes ", but I like this one the best. The opening song is a historic and rare recording by Cole himself. This CD is a revised version of this song that was played in Lincoln Center in New York. Pattie LuPone has a truly beautiful ,strong yet sentimental voice. I highly recommend it

5-0 out of 5 stars A REAL CLASSIC!
A real classic from the authorship of a B'way legend. A work like this has great relevance because it stands as a wonderful recording for one of the greatest classics of the musical theatre of all times. Voices and orchestrations are wonderful. The title song sounds great in the voice of Patti LuPone. A cultural treasure to keep and listen over and over again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Made me a kid again!
After listening to Rogers and Hammersteins Cinderella, I felt like a kid again back in the sixties. It totally transported me. I was amazed that I still remembered the words to most of the songs! Even though they were slightly out of order, I still enjoyed listening to the CD. One problem I had with the recording was Cinderella's step mother sounded very different on the cd then on the DVD. It was bothersome. Had they been the same woman, this reviewer would have given it 5 stars. Overall, I was very pleased with it...especially the price! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars two stars for the effort but there is an option:AINADAMAR with Dawn Upshaw
Ok,it is indeed a welcome effort to do a musical with Lorca's work as a basis.La Chiusa in the past used the classics as basis for musical (e.g. Medea, The Wild Party).however, in this one, it is completely unmemorable.the instrumentation is not good, singing and melody is not good.there are musicals that to have irregular melodies but works eventually.this is not one of them.the darkness of the material was more of an obstabcle rather than a facet of the material.it did not work here.A broadway "big bang" is so obvious even with the use of basic instrumentation. Bernarda Alba needs to be tight and cohesive so it would not be BORING.
5-0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT BERNARDA ALBA!
Considering that the curtain will soon be going up for another season on (and off) the Great White Way--both Xanadu and Night of the Hunter are being considered as Broadway musicals--let's prepare by looking at a triumvirate of recently released 2006 off-Broadway cast albums.
4-0 out of 5 stars good that i own this record
it might not be kander & ebb's hispanic approach, it might not be glittering jerry herman sound, it might not be the big lloyd webber showdown - it's bleak, it's rough, and it's sad. it's not the record that i will listen to while having a nice evenig with friends around.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Cast Recording
As cast recordings go, many of them fail to bring the spirit of the show to life. However, this 1981 cast recording of Joseph Papp's production of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance hits the spot dead centre! Complete with dialogue, just like the D'Oyly Carte recordings of the 1960s, this is a superb reminder of a magnificent cast. The great pity is that, although Estelle Parsons is wonderful, the recording was not made when the original Ruth, Patricia Routledge, was in the cast. However, when it transferred from the Park to Broadway, she didn't go with it. Never mind, it makes up for it with a dream cast including Kevin Kline, Linda Ronstadt, Rex Smith and the one and only George Rose. A fine recording that every musical collecter (whether a fan of G&S or not) should own.

1-0 out of 5 stars they would've been better models
sure, on the cover of the cd they look very "pretty" but when it comes to singing it is horrible. The instruments they used were messed up. my very favorite piece in pirates of penzance is "I am the very model of a modern major general" and somehow they managed to mess that up too. the people who sing this are either out of tune or they are singing too slowly. If you want to hear real and good pirates of penzance than i suggest getting the older version (the one with a drawing on it).when it comes to an opera (especially gilbert and sullivan operas) looks can not be everything . Being able to sing is a must.

4-0 out of 5 stars Penzance Pleases!
It is very difficult to understand the words of practically everything sung by the chorus of a D'Oyly Carte Opera Company recording of Gilbert & Sullivan. Not so with this brilliant Broadway cast album of The Pirates of Penzance. You can listen to this one without the printed copy of the book and lyrics in hand. The individual cast performances are fresh and give the feeling that this musical is being performed for the first time. This is not the pro-forma, ritual performance that sounds like everyone is just going through the motions. You will want this on your portable player for a long time. ... The best thing about this CD is the score: Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields's songs have lost none of their incisiveness over the years, and even a lackluster revival such as this one doesn't entirely succeed in dulling their edge. 3-0 out of 5 stars Nice Revival
Christina Applegate is a totally endearing, multi-faceted performer, but there is no way you can forget Gwen Verdon, or to a lesser degree, Shirley MacLaine in the so-so movie. However, I love revival recordings, if only because they tend to record a more complete score, and they are technically so superior to most of the older originals. On that score, this Sweet Charity doesn't disappoint.

I was hesitant to buy this album because I was told it was a bit raunchy and not well done.I'm still kicking myself for not buying it sooner.
2-0 out of 5 stars An easy way to tell which version of this show you'll prefer:
As you may be aware, there are two musical versions of WILD PARTY: this one, written by Andrew Lippa, which premiered off-Broadway, and another version written by Michael John LaChiusa which premiered on Broadway.

I am a musical theatre addict and am always on the lookout for exciting, little known shows. And let me tell you, musical theatre fan or not, this music is infectious. The music is so upbeat and the singers so powerful that you will want to listen to this CD on repeat. I rarely buy CDs anymore... in fact, this is the first CD I've bought in about 3 years. I was not disappointed. The Wild Party music is addictive and it amazes me that this show was never on broadway, based on the music alone and the apparent talent of the cast. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best New Musical in Years
Took a special mother/daughter trip to Chicago last summer which included viewing The Full Monty. My daughter and I are veteran musical theater lovers. Both of us agreed this was the snappiest, most amusing and touching musical we'd seen in a long time. Every song was catchy, singable, funny, moved the plot along and touched the heart. I had to have the soundtrack.
5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative and Entertaining
A departure from standard fare, "The Full Monty" is creative and entertaining. While the "exposure" got a lot of attention, the music is great and the story is touching.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Full Monty...Let's it Go!!!!!!
When I heard about a musical being made from the movie "The Full Monty" I though that broadway was going down the drain and I didn't give the show any thought after that.

Editorial Review

This unjustly forgotten masterpiece was in many ways the last great creative gasp for the late, great country songwriter-singer Roger Miller, who died in 1992. After he wrote countless country gems like "Invitation to the Blues," "King of the Road," and "Dang Me" during the 1950s and '60s, Miller's creative muse ran dry in the early 1970s. The drought continued until he made a remarkable comeback by penning the 20-song score and contributing vocals to the soundtrack of this 1985 Broadway adaptation of Mark Twain's literary classic. 5-0 out of 5 stars TEN stars would be too few
When I first heard this album, Roger Miller was already dead.I actually cried when I realized this; I couldn't write him a fan letter to tell him how wonderful I thought it was.Well, I COULD have written him, but the letter was probably not going to be delivered.
5-0 out of 5 stars Roger Miller is a genius!
I had owned this previously and was replacing it.Great music.Very sing-along-able!Certain of the songs are hauntingly beautiful, others just plain fun!

4-0 out of 5 stars Roger Miller can be herd in every song!
This is a wonderful C.D. for anyone that enjoys Roger Miller.Having just seen the play, I ordered the C.D. right away.Every time I listen to it, I enjoy it more."River in the Rain" is a favorite, but each song is done in the Roger Miller style. If you have seen the play, I'm sure you will want the C.D. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Terrence Mann & Co.
I would change my name to Maguerite if it meant that Terrence Mann would sing me Where's the Girl. This is an amazing show, and the cast definitely does its music justice on this album. The entire thing is an excellent balance of humor and drama. Having heard other versions (namely, the Encore!), I still recommend this one. And Terry, if you're reading this, look me up. ;)

5-0 out of 5 stars Scarlet Pimpernel - Original Broadway Cast
Buy this for Terrence Mann's performances alone. His rendition of Falcon in a Dive is filled with passion and power.Where's the girl is also truly wonderful.Douglas Sills and Christina Andreas are both perfectly casted and their voices are beautiful in their respective songs. The ensemble pieces are great too.But for me, I can't get enough of Terrence Mann's baritone voice and wish he had even more to sing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Scarlet Fever!
I began getting sucked into the swashbuckling adventures of "celebrity couple" Percy and Margeru
