Fiddler On The Roof is one of the greatest of all musicals. A flawless book, remarkable score and wonderful performances.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic
This musical is so very beautiful. The music is fantastic. Of course my favorite song is Sunrise, Sunset. I highly recommend this recording to anyone who is interested in musical theatre. You can play this CD over and over again for years to come and still enjoy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great!!!
I would give this c.d. 4 and 3/4 stars if I could. Three reasons why it is not 5 is that it doesn't include "Tevye's Monologue", "Tevye's Rebuttal", and (My most favorite song out of the show) "Chavaleh." I could live without the first two but the c.d. just seems to be missing something without "Chavaleh." But otherwise I love this c.d.

5-0 out of 5 stars JC SUPES soundtrack : the Ultimate
Originally issued in 1970 packaged as a double Lp Concept album with Deep Purple's Ian Gillan as Christ back in the days of theshort-lived Rock Opera genre -- Jesus Christ Superstar was intially held as a musical play out of compromise and fear from sensoral scrutiny by its writers Timothy Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, as in its stead they opted to issue it on a 2 disc set of vinyl platters thus - until the time when it is finally made into a musical play in London the following year.

I am not sure which is worse:the atricious sound quality of this version of the soundtrack or Ted Neely.Let me just say that I am a huge fan of JCS.Huge.If you truly enjoy the music, I'd strongly recommend purchasing the 1996 remastered version of the 1970 original album.
3-0 out of 5 stars The original soundtrack is a million times better
The emotive nature of the songs is nearly lost in the movie (which I am watching again as I type for about the 100th time), in part because there is a lot of movement to account for. In the London concept soundtrack Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My First Sondheim
This was the first Sondheim album I ever had, and I got hooked.
5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting, melancholy, life-affirming -- a work of art
Sometimes it's great not to have heard something in your youth - it makes it that much more enjoyable when you finally encounter it further down the line. I had already enjoyed Sondheim's genius work in the musicals "Sweeney Todd" and "Into the Woods" but only just heard "Company" for the first time this year. All I can say is I'll never hear the word "Barcelona" without thinking of Sondheim's gorgeous song of that name from this musical about the ups and downs of marriage and loneliness and how these states of being both mirror-reflect and contradict each other (sometimes at the same time, as Sondheim observes in the song "Sorry-Grateful").
5-0 out of 5 stars You're always sorry, you're always grateful
I actually have two recordings of Company - I bought this one for the fabulous performances of Elaine Stritch and well, everyone except Dean Jones, and the 1995 Broadway Revival Cast for the superior vocal talents of that show's Bobby and the additional song "Marry Me a Little." If you're a true Sondheim devotee, I'd get both recordings. If you only buy one recording though, this should be it.

I love this CD. It has a long story. I live in Costa Rica, when I was in highschool an interchange student from USA lend me his Miss Saigon cassette. Fifteen years of owning this CD and this recording never ceases to amaze me. I have watched Miss Saigon in its grand Broadway scale, not to mention its ambitious helicopter scene, years back and it has set the bar on my theater standards. This recording recaptures that aural experience in this epic 2-CD compilation.

Great recording of one of the greats. The original is now difficult to listen to due to the tinny sound and mono recording. this revival was wonderful, with a great cast and now a definitive, excellent recording. Skip the movie soundtrack.

If the stage production was as good as the cast recording I can only say that I really hope that the chaps in Great Britain who are currently rehearsing up the latest revival are on up on their jippers (or whatever they call them) on this one... `Songs For A New World' represents Jason Robert Brown's brilliant introduction to the world of musical theatre. The show is a revue of some of the songwriter's past work; skillfully linked together by a sense of yearning, challenge and sometimes sadness.

5-0 out of 5 stars the iron curtain lives on in this masterpiece
I bought the double LP on vinyl as soon as it came out and later crossed over to the CD version, although i have to say the sound recording of the Cd is inferior in quality. I guess it was early days of Dolby sound. Abba's last studio album, the visitors, also suffered from the same technical imperfection. Since then I've spent the last 20 years listening to chess.I heard one commentary that it was as if Bjorn and Benny were let out of their cage when they composed this piece, . I have to agree. A ten year stint as the musical backbone of Abba seems like a warm up session compared to the musical genius of this album. My two favourite tracks are embassy lament for it's wittiness and Pity the child, as it cuts me to the bone every time I hear it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent musci
The London version is vastly superior to the American "let's cram in a happy ending, so the audience goes home feeling cheery" version. The lyrics are clever and witty, the singing rich and wonderful. Not a revival of an old show, or a movie-turned-musical. This is an original work. There's nothing like it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, but Still Worthwhile
It took me a while to get into "Chess." But after comparing this recording with the delicate, miscast American version, I realized how great this recording is.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Different Interpretation of Cabaret
It really bothered me that a review below stated that Liza Minnelli wasn't Sally Bowles and that the song "Cabaret" is about Sally being upset that she lost her true love and that its about Sally coming to the realization that she is stuck in the awful cabaret.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love this album
Just got a new CD player for car and this is one of the first albums I had to have on CD. Now all I need is "Two Ladies".

5-0 out of 5 stars Viva La Diva
After reading all of the reviews where everyone blasts Liza Minnelli, and how this was a vehicle for her talents...I think they forget that she was originally desired for the role of Sally Bowles in the first place, and was considered too American. Yes, one cannot deny this is Judy Garland's daughter. Every actor/actress has one or two roles that define perfection...and in this case (as much as I hate to admit) this is Liza's. Ripping apart the "love triangle" and comparing it to the broadway musical, you are forgetting to the heart of this production in the first place: the stories written by Christopher Isherwood, and that is exactly what Fosse did in his desire to return to the original inspiration. Sexuality couldn't be mentioned in 1966 as something realistic or even a possibility. But blooming homosexuality/bisexuality was VERY prelevent in Weimar Berlin (it is even alluded to in the silent German classic: Pandora's Box, with Louise Brooks, which has modern cinema's first lesbian and remember, in Frankfurt there was a center for Studies on Human Sexuality that as early as 1925 said that homosexuality was natural...one of the first places to be destroyed by fascism and Hitler) and to me, that is why the story line and these songs work...it is realistic and also very true to Isherwood's stories. So if anything, blame the stage musical for glossing over the truth...not the film. Obvious critics also blast the cutting out of a lot of the original tracks, which again works because the story line has changed. Why include tracks of Sally's landlady singing about her love for a Jewish fruit vendor if it isn't even alluded to in the film?

5-0 out of 5 stars Good representation of A. R. Rahman's best
Warning: Anyone who has seen the musical or merely picked up this CD soundtrack but knows absolutely nothing about Bollywood won't get the big hype surrounding this music. If you know A. R. Rahman's work and have followed his music throughout his amazing career, though, you will adore this CD. Another reason to adore it: even if you don't speak a lick of Hindi, you can still follow along with the English snippets and the catchy Hindi phrases. However, if your lack of Hindi skills is paired with no knowledge of what Bollywood is all about, the lyrics will come across quite easily as cheesy and the premise of the show fluffy. I'm not here to convert anyone to the style of Bollywood, but merely to ask you to appreciate this soundtrack as a play-on version of the real deal. A. R. Rahman's work is legendary and, when it comes down to it, the show is all about the music. And look at that- that's what this CD is!
5-0 out of 5 stars BOMBAY AWAKES!
I know these aren't the songs currently used in the Broadway version. Why? I don't know. Apparently the show is VERY under-rated and isn't as good at the box office as it's leading competitors. I don't see why, though. The dancing, music, sets, all AMAZING!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gleason, Zien, Peters, Sondheim, Lapine... What could be better?
With an all-star cast and production team, it's no wonder that this show is one of the best ever written. When you combine the endless talents of the wonderful Joanna Gleason with the ridiculously incredible music of Stephen Sondheim, the result is a good year at the Tonys.Gleason's Baker's Wife, for which she won the Tony, is touching, heartbreaking, relatable, witty, smart and hilarious, not to mention the incredible vocals.Chip Zien and Gleason are a match made in heaven and play off of eachother extremely well in such tracks as "I Guess This Is Goodbye/Maybe They're Magic" and "It Takes Two".Bernadette Peters, with the help of the rest of the outstanding cast, relays an extremely powerful message, and she does it with, as usual, amazing vocals. This Sondheim-Lapine musical is talent at it's best.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best!
Sondheim's "Into the Woods" is a true classic in every sense of the word. The music and lyrics are wonderful and invetive, and this cast recording lives up to it all. This recording has one of the best ensemble casts I have heard. The best performances IMO come from Robert Westenberg, Johanna Gleason, and of course Bernedette Peters who was robbed of a Tony nod for her awesome performance as the witch. My favorite numbers are Prolouge, Hello Little Girl, Agony, Giants in the Sky, Moments in the Woods, No One is Alone, and Finale. Make sure to get a hold of the wonderful video reocording of this show with the original cast as well!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Accessable Songs
In the middle of the late 80s "British Invasion" ("Le Miz", "Phantom") came Stephen Sondheim's brilliant "Into The Woods", a look at fairy tales and what happens after "happily ever after".Although it lost to "Phantom" for Best Musical, it did pick up Best Score & Actress (Joanna Gleason).

1-0 out of 5 stars What a BORE!
Saw the show in Washington and nearly fell asleep. Should never have been made. The score is dismall with a couple of all too brief moments of musicality, wisely given to Maureen McGovern. However, it's not enough to save this misguided mess. Skip the CD, pick up Jane Eyre, a musical version of a classic that works beautifully and deserved more success than it acheived.

3-0 out of 5 stars Foster Showcase
Little Women is all about Sutton Foster. She does a great job, but as shown by the earily closing of the show it, one actress can't fix a flop. The songs in Little Women which tell a story or forward the plot of the show like "Weekly Volcano Press," "Astonishing," and "An Operatic Tradegy" are good and very entertaining, however a lot of the other songs in the show are stagnant. Basically any number without Foster or McGovern in it is not worth listening to. The show comes across as having good intentions. Though it has some good songs (I know people who have used some as audition pieces well), it does not seem to jump out at the audience at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars Little Women, has a lot of problems
First off, this show should be called JO!,because she is the only character you ever hear from in this weak adaptation of Little Women.

Saw Pippin on Broadway a couple times, and back then it was uncomparable. Fosse's staging, Vereen's performance, Tony Walton's sets and costumes and Schwartz's music were unique. It was a big old, dazzling carnival. Only wish I had seen Irene Ryan, but alas, she had passed away before I saw the show. Still, the CD preserves her performance as well as the rest of this highly imaginative and original piece. Skip the filmed version, somehow the magic got lost, while it is mildy diverting, it nonetheless, misses the impact of the live performance.

Guys and Dolls is one of the the greatest of all Broadway musicals, and this recording is the best evidence of why that's so. Starting with the classic Damon Runyon stories, Frank Loesser wrote songs that really suited these characters, and the performances on this recording bring these characters to life in a way that contemporary revivials don't.
5-0 out of 5 stars Original cast great- movie soundtrack add-ons are awful
You've got to give five stars to this CD of the original cast recording. It's one of the most musical of the classic broadway musicals, and one of the few that's truly American in its character.Loesser is at his best here. The sound quality is from the fifties but the performance quality more than compmensates. But I'd give anything to be able to erase the movie sound track cuts which the CD producers included to fill out the disc.Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons are miscast as musical artists and their reditions are simply awful. Keep your remote handy and change to the next CD when the last chords of the original cast fade out.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best
