Editorial Review

Andrew LloydWebber'sadaptation of T.S. Eliot's poems may not have become Broadway's longest-runningmusical without the original cast to begin the raves. Which is why every aficionado ofthis theatrical classic will tell you that this is the one you have to own (although they'llprobably tell you that you need the import Original London Cast album as well, the show having originated on London's West End and all). But this is the one with BettyBuckley singing "Memory"--the song that turned her into a star--and the two discs areappropriate for the musical that helped set off Broadway's "operatic" phase. The show isnow also available--in its entirety--as a home video, but the music still stands on its own, though some cynics have wondered why so much music only produced one hit standard.Read more

The most surprising track on this collection isn't hidden between blockbusters selections from the blockbuster Lloyd Webber songbook but is located in plain view right at the beginning of the CD. The previously unreleased "Probably on Thursday" was originally written as a pop song in 1967 and indeed sounds very much like a forgotten gem by an obscure 1960s pop singer. It's absolutely delightful and the last thing you'd expect from a composer best known for neoclassical bombast. Another surprise is another previously unreleased song, this one from Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this!
Godspell was the foundation of my family. My parents met in a play of Godspell. They had the movie version, and we watched it so much. We even bought the soundtrack to the film and took it with us on vacation. We all knew all the songs and sung along. We all have pretty good singing voices, so it was a lot of fun! I still get choked up when I hear "On The Willows"...

5-0 out of 5 stars I find it unbelieveable
That this was released in March of 1973.I graduated from High School in June 1973 but swear I saw this movie when I was 15, in 1971.
4-0 out of 5 stars GodSpell
My family and I enjoy the CD, because in church I sing the song, Day by Day, a lot, so we enjoy listening to that song a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Music, lyrics still pack a pleasing punch...
Although it sure isn't the 60's anymore, mostly a good thing since the decade had many tragedies, the music from the original Broadway show is great fun. It's hard to beat this combination of energy and poignancy, with its caste of politically naive, sexually aware, substance-abusing, wounded but funny characters. A milestone of American musical theater, for good or ill, anyone who loves Broadway should own a copy of "Hair."

5-0 out of 5 stars The Age of Aquarius brought to life onstage!
One of the best shows ever to hit Broadway! I am in a theatre group in my town and the teens did "Hair" for a musical. It was my first, and I fell in love with the show and all its unique characters. The show is about a young man named Claude who is going to be drafted to Vietnam and feels confused about how to look at the situation he's in, and, with the help of his hippie friends, learns to "let the sunshine in." From Berger and his imaginary girlfriend Donna, to Jeannie and her enviormental concern, to Sheila and her protests, to Woof and Mick Jagger, to Crissy and her dream boy Frank Mills, Ragni, MacDermot, and Rado have created a one-of-a-kind cast of oddities set in NYC in the 1960s, who get by by as a tribe and live a free and meaningful life.
5-0 out of 5 stars "How dare they try to end this beauty?"
"Hair" was before my time (coming out nearly a decade before I was born) but I fell in love with this soundtrack circa 1992 (I loved the song "Donna" as I was 16 years old when I first listened to it).

A true musical theater classic.Wonderful melodies that will last for years to come.
5-0 out of 5 stars "I Have Dreamed"
As an avid collector of Broadway Cast Recordings and Original Soundtracks I have dreamed for years for complete recordings (including underscoring) of soundtracks to film versions of Broadway musicals. The one advantage to soundtrack recordings of film versions of Broadway musicals is access to large studio orchestras and Hollywood's best arrangers and orchestrators. The most satisfying result of this for me is the sound of each production number. What the large studio orchestra does is mirror the visual action of the large (or small) production number. The original LP versions of these soundtracks rarely included the orchestral tracks due to space limitations.I cite one example to illustrate this point though there are many others. That example is the dance preceding the barn raising in the soundtrack to "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" included on the wonderful Rhino disc. This CD of "The King & I", along with other Angel releases, "Carousel" and "Oklahoma!" also feature generous portions of orchestral tracks. For this reason alone (though there are others)this CD is a must for any R & H fan. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Now my favorite CD, EVER!
After reading Urinetown (never having seen it), I wondered what on earth it sounded like. Most of the book is just lyrics, and I had no idea what they sounded like. When I finally listened to the music, I found an incredibly complex, catchy, and moving CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Joseph... Come on!
It's interesting to note that Rice and Webber got their start in Church Musicals, and to this day Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph remain two of their most pleasing efforts, crafty worsk which generate applause from much more then their religious target audience.Of the two, I've always though Superstar was the superior, but then you really can't compare them beyond their subject matter. Both are entertaining, but Joseph is entertaining in a different way from Superstar.Where Superstar was dark, moody, controversial, hip, and ultimately tragic, Joseph was, well, fun.It has such a small scale, take me or leave me goofiness to it that you can't help but fall in love with.yes it's a no brainer, but it's a good no brainer. How often do you get that?

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this CD
I love everything about this movie. The music is amazing and the instrumental songs on this CD are perfect. The first CD seemed to be more for a bunch of teenyboppers that wanted to hear the worst song on the whole CD (Lady Marmalade). If only they could combine the good songs from the first CD into this one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Could it get any better?
So i thought that the first instalment in these soundtracks was great (and it was) but the purchase of this sequel is a must if you want the full effect. With the original film versions of these songs, sung by the stars of the movie, you get the real feel that was the magnifisence of Moulin Rouge!Ewan McGregor is still by far the star, with his talent spilling over the dramatic lovesong 'Come What May' and 'Your Song', but Nicole's brilliant performance as Satine definatly takes front and center in 'One Day I'll Fly Away' and the film version of 'Sparkling Diamonds'...I have noticed that many complain about how the first soundtrack did not include the film version of this song...well you need this CD then...you will not be dissapointed.Other highlights include 'Like a Virgin' which is downright histarical, and the dark cover of 'the show must go on' which highlights the tragidy behind this tightly woven tale.THis is one must have soundtrack for your ever growing collection.A perfect companion to soundtrack number 1!

4-0 out of 5 stars Moulin rouge tried to fill up the GAP
This contains many great tracks missing from the original soundtrack, including Like A Virgin, Spectacular Spectacular and The Show Must Go On. I thought the inclusion of two instrumental versions of Your Song might be a bit redundant, but upon listening to them I really enjoyed them and they are quite different from one another. OK, it's not the best soundtrack that could have been put out. But it's pretty darn close. One thing that many DEDICATED fans of the movie (including myself) said is that the original movie soundtrack lacked the actual original movie score. There are 10+ songs in "Moulin Rouge" and many didn't make the final cut.

5-0 out of 5 stars Achingly Lovely
What a beautiful musical, and what a shame that it didn't receive the recognition that it deserved! The story, of course, is well known and the music fits it perfectly. It is one of the very few musicals that can bring me to tears while listening to it. I highly suggest that you get the OBC version. Just as an aside, if you like this show, check out "Jane Eyre" also.

5-0 out of 5 stars Acompilation 'Secret Garden'--Broadway and RSC
Like so many here, I've been captivated by "The Secret Garden" since I first heard this stunning 1991 Broadway cast album. A decade later the Royal Shakespeare Company staged a revival, and their 2001 London cast album gained its own avid followers. But neither set is completely satisfying, given that the Broadway singers are much stronger than the British, while the dramatic coherence of the RSC version represents the composer's latest thoughts.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Enchanting Musical Experience
I've listened to this CD countless times now and I never tire of it. 'The Secret Garden' is a heart-breakingly beautiful story of terrible loss and learning to live again. This refers to the experiences of both a spoiled, young girl and a sad, lonely man. In the original book the main focus of the story is on the young girl but in this version puts equal focus on the man making the story a little bit more accessible to adults. The wonderful songs convey the feelings of the characters and set the tone of the scenes perfectly. The performances are all fabulous especially those of Daisy Eagan and Rebecca Luker. Although I must admit the voice of the boy who plays Colin really irritates me, all the other singers are excellent. There is a London version of this musical which has new arrangements in an attempt to make it flashier but all it does is rob the story of it's heart so stick with the Broadway version. If you love the story of 'The Secret Garden' you don't want to miss out on this marvelous musical adaptation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Some good, some bad
This recording is not quite what I had hoped it would be in listening to the preview samples on the label's website and on Amazon. When I heard from the samples that the new arrangements would be using electric guitar, I thought it would add an interesting edge to the show, and to some extent that strategy worked. Unfortunately, there are also times when it is distracting, particularly when there are unnecessary guitar solos or when there's just too much guitar noise going on and taking away from the musical quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!Evita to the end!
Evita might possibly be one of the best movie soundtracks ever!It includes most of the wonderful songs from the Broadway run.It also features Antonio Banderas (who is actually a very good singer!), and Madonna, which takes it from and A to and A+++++++++++!Andrew Lloyd Webber makes a change from the Phantom of the Opera (which is all classical opera) to a modern pop, rock, classical, opera mix.The best songs are:
4-0 out of 5 stars One of my interesting soundtracks-four stars!
I first watched Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita when I was about eight years old. I have to confess that I was not so fascinated with the story much. Maybe because I was too young then, but when I watched it again when I was twelve or thirteen, I felt that it was a very good movie. Though I don't like it as much as The Phantom of The Opera, but Webber's composition stood captivated me in Evita. The soundtrack is the combination of Rock, Opera, and Jazz. I could say that this is the modern composition for the movie. When I watched Evita in 2004-2005, I even cried when Madonna sang the song called "You must love me". And this song had become my favourite track from the soundtrack album, and also, it has become my favourite scene from the movie. IF... you give your attention to this movie, I'm quite sure that you're going to know something more from one woman's heart. Basically, I don't like Madonna much, but in this movie, I have to admit that she was beautiful and her acting was brilliant.

Disney's revival as a major animation studio began in 1989 with the release of THE LITTLE MERMAID and reached its pinnacle with BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (the only animated film ever nominated for a Best Picture Oscar). As much as the film is a visual delight, its also a musical feast for the ears.People had said for over a decade that the musical movie was dead, but BEAUTY AND THE BEAST proved otherwise and paved the way for later big-screen adaptations of famous stage musicals. Some of my favorite songs on the album include:
5-0 out of 5 stars My children listen to this CD over and over
My kids (5 year old boy and 2 year old girl) LOVE this soundtrack. They make me play it repeatedly in the car, EVERYTIME we go anywhere. It is word-for-word an exact replication of the movie.I highly recommend it for any Beauty and the Beast fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ashman/Menken's best of their three...
I never really cared for the Little Mermaid, but I liked the songs nevertheless. But I was more of a fan of Beauty and the Beast.I found the songs, acting, and animation a joy to watch. And it was around that time that I wanted to be a Disney Animator.

Editorial Review

A criticism that has long dogged Billy Joel's career involves his songs' direct, heart-on-the-sleeve emotional sentiments and a musical approach that often revels in pop music's past glories instead of reacting against them. Ironically, those are the very strengths of Twyla Tharp's dialog-free pop ballet based on Joel's infectious canon of music, including his recent forays into the classical realm. This live cast recording is fueled by the piano and vocals of Michael Cavanaugh, who, backed by an ensemble handpicked by the songwriter, gooses every last drop of drama from Joel's already theatrical songs with a verve worthy of the legend himself. But divorced from Tharp's always kinetic choreography, and despite angular reworkings of "We Didn't Start the Fire" and other Joel standards, it's a collection that sometimes sounds akin to Joelmania: not really Billy, but an incredible simulation. 4-0 out of 5 stars Saw the show - what a memory
I love Broadway and grew up on the Piano Man (no I am a Chicagoan and haven't yet seen anything on New York's Broadway). This show did justice to both an now I listen to the CD to re-live the event!

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Concept, But Originals Outshine
In anticipation of seeing this show, I picked up a copy of the cast cd.The orchestrations were crisp and Michael Cavanaugh's voice was quite good as the "piano man".Best Tracks include:
1-0 out of 5 stars Movin' Out CD: Why?
Who is this recording for? Surely not for Billy Joel fans, who would undoubtedly prefer Billy doing the actual singing. For that matter, why would anyone want to listen to 60+ minutes of Billy Joel covers? This is the most pointless cast album since Contact. Movin' Out is a similarly visual show the appeal of which lies not in Michael Cavanaugh's admittedly distinctive performance. It's no wonder you see used copies of Movin' Out is used records stores everywhere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don Quixote
Back in High School my band leader, Mr. DeYoung, decided (agianst much opposition from those of us in the band let me tell you) to have us perform select pieces from this musical
