4-0 out of 5 stars Bye Bye Birdie soundtrack
The product itself is excellent, but:1) it took about three weeks to arrive; and 2) we didn't realize the film cut out and added so music. What we needed was a soundtrack for the stage production.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love the movie...but the soundtrack?
I am a huge fan of the movie and the soundtrack is also amazing...the only thingI'm uspet about is that "One Last Kiss" on the cd is TOTALLY different!

5-0 out of 5 stars New Addiction right here.
Okay, so I got The Producers on DVD for my birthday and I was like...amazed.Then, I went out and bought the soundtrack so that I could listen to "Haben Sei Gehurt Das Deutsche Band?" over and over again. This whole CD is fantastic. The lyrics are hilarious, and some of them are actually sincere, like "Til Him" and "That Face".Matthew Broderick's voice is as great as ever and Nathan Lane's energy emenates from this disc.Highlights for this CD are "We Can Do It", "Der Guten Tag Hop-Clop", "Keep it Gay", "Along Came Bialy", "That Face", "Haben Sei Gehurt Das Deutsche Band?", all the "Hitler" songs, and...well...all of them, really.Just...buy it and listen to it...and be happy. The end.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny Musical Soundtrack
If you thought movie musicals had died, you were probably mostly right. However, every once in a while someone tries another one. Some succeed, most fail. However, the quality of the music from these movies is often quite different from the movie itself.Such is the case with this soundtrack.Mel Brooks, the man who brought you the classics "Young Frankenstein," "Blazing Saddles," and "High Anxiety," gives us the music from the movie "The Producers."

5-0 out of 5 stars I've grown accustomed to this disc.
I really don't like show tunes that much.I listen to rock, blues, some jazz and I have a few classical favorites, but I'm not a show tune person. So, I'm crankin' my vinyl LP version of this very recording right now and I'm loving it (or lovering it) despite myself!
4-0 out of 5 stars My Fair Lady 1956
My family had this as an LP when I was young.Great performances!Too bad Julie Andrews was not in the movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the Best
What can you say about MFL that hasn't already been said. Sublime, perfect, classic. This is still the definitive recording of the show, and no one has ever come close to the original cast. Sadly, while the movie is wonderful, had Warner Bros. used Andrew's it might have been one of the greatest film musicals of all time. And while Audrey Hepburn gamely gives it her all, Andrew's had clearly made Eliza Doolittle her own, and she would have been uncomparable on film, and raised the level of the entire movie. Well, the rest is history, Andrews went on to be one of the biggest movie stars of the 60's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally!!!
This superb collection of Bernstein's film music only lacks the title theme from "Spies Like Us" to rate all 5 stars. I have been looking for soundtrack music from "Zulu Dawn" in general, and the "River Crossing" specifically, since 1987. That selection alone is worth the price of the 2 disc set.

5-0 out of 5 stars "his music left an impression on all of us ~ Mr. Bernstein"
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, National Youth Jazz Orchestra, Daniel Caine Orchestra and Crouch End Festival Chorus (Choir Master: David Temple) performs the gems by composer ELMER BERNSTEIN...conducted by Paul Bateman, Daniel Caine, James Fitzpatrick and Nic Raine, this latest release "The Essential Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection", has all the rhythmically dynamic and poetic scores ever conceived...Bernstein's music remains in your mind with haunting and forbidding themes that will stay with you the rest of your days...sought after Bernstein career selections and World Premier Debut Recordings give this package an A Plus!

5-0 out of 5 stars Innocent Charm
This is a musical that couldn't have been created today. Featuring little-known and very young performers (except perhaps for Gary Burghoff, who would go on to play Radar O'Reilly in M.A.S.H. on TV) the show was literally workshopped into existence by the actors from a bunch of songs written by Clark Gesner and endorsed by Charles M. Schulz, the creator of the comic strip. In fact, the credit given for "the book" (script) is a fictitious charcter whose name is made up of the cast members initials!
5-0 out of 5 stars Good CD
I'man accompianist and am working with a HighSchool Drama Department and their production of "You're a Good man Charlie Brown"This recording is excellent- and I would recommend it without any reservation because it closely follows the original script/orchestration.I do not recommend the 1999 CD version of the same play that was brought back to broadway. Too many "artistic liberties" were taken in it's recording, thus it is not even close to the original production. The simple feeling of the play is lost in the newer recording.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good songs.....but not the greatest recording
I was in this show and it was so much fun! The music is awesome! So after the show closed I went out and bought the soundtrack and I was not impressed at all. I realize that all of these adults are acting as kids, but I dont think that they even tried to make it sound good. And just like it says in the CD cover, Lucy's voice sounds like fingernails against a chalk-board: she fits right in. Overall I give this one star because the writing itself is good...but I would be downright embarassed if I was a part of this particular cast! I have never heard the original broadway cast recording, but just by listening to this, I can tell you one thing: buy the other recording!! Anything is better than this!! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too boring for me.
Maybe I have just been spoiled by the modern musicals, but this classic was boring. half the songs were dancing, and that isnt exactly what I like listening to. A little tap is ok, but not this much. I also like to have a couple ballads in the show, but this one was balladless. Jerry Orbach sounds great, when you get to hear him, but even that isnt very often. Why not get The Fantastics instead? This show just wasnt for me. I would suggest that collectors, and classic lovers, get this one. Other than that, pass it over. Favorite song: "Lullabies of Broadway" (only because Jerry Orbach sings most of it.)

5-0 out of 5 stars 42nd Street
I saw 42nd Street in Washington DC and it was awesome! This soundtrack is great. All of the music is so catchy. If you like 42nd Street and you enjoy the music, buy this CD!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Stage Musical About Stage Musicals
42nd Street is an oldie, dating back to the days when Al Jolson and Ruby Keeler played the director and ingenuous wanna-be musical star.In 1980, this version opened on Broadway, with some updated lines and songs added to make it relevant to present-day audiences. It featured a talented ensemble of performers, including stage musical veterans Jerry Orbach and Tammy Grimes.(An interesting sidenote:This was Orbach's last role in musical theater until he provided the voice of Lumiere for Disney in 1990; he also blamed his contract for this show for costing him a stab at a movie career!)

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Company
It took 25 years for a Broadway revival of COMPANY to happen. When it did it was a production by the Roundabout Theatre Company announced for a limited run and though there were rumors the show would transfer to another Broadway theatre, this was not to be. There are changes to the text and orchestration here. The orchestra is reduced to fourteen players, less than half the size of the original.Recording techniques have changed since 1970 and the singers now all use isolation booths. The result on the record is not the sound of all voices blending into an ensemble but of 11 individual voices. This is most apparent in You Could Drive a Person Crazy.Debra Monk sounds too young and lacks world-weary quality needed for Joanne and screams too much in The Ladies Who Lunch, but La Chanze makes a wonderful Marta, belting out Another Hundred People in a style all her own.
3-0 out of 5 stars It's the little things
I'd like to get proponents of the three versions of "Company" I'm aware of - the OBC, 1996 London, and this 1996 Broadway Revival Cast - and put them in a room together to "discuss" which one is the best. And better, put a large table in the center of the room, piled high with fruits and doughnuts and the sort, and see how long it takes for the food to start flying.
4-0 out of 5 stars A True Original After All These Years
Nearly 35 years after its original Broadway premiere, Stephen Sondheim's "Company" remains one of the most unique and daring works of musical theatre ever. The true definition of a concept musical, the show enschews a traditional, linear plot in favor of vignettes that offer insight into the lives and psyches of married Manhatannites. The show is centered around Bobby, who is the only one of his friends who isn't married and trying to figure out why.

3-0 out of 5 stars Really 2.5
SO this is another show thats actually three one acts. The first "The Diary of Adam and Eve" is the best by far. It has really cute songs and nice plot. Thats the only reason I rounded this up from 2.5 to 3 stars. The rest of the show is nothing great. "Lady and Tiger" is short and boring. And "Passionella" is exactly what it sounds like, a knock off of Cinderella. But hey, its a good show for collectors and "The Diary of Adam and Eve" is nice. Favorite Song: "Its A Fish"

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring material that you forget very easily
According to some reviews, this musical was supposed to be very good and I bought it. Unfortunately, I was quite dissapointed. It's composed of three different tales, the first one referring to the Adam & Eve biblical story. The lyrics here are very silly and tedious. The second tale, "The Lady or the Tiger?" contains songs that are simply awful, probably the worst ever written for a Broadway show. The third story, "Passionella", contains music that does nothing to make things better. The album contains a good informative booklet in English, German, French & Italian (as Sony uses to do)which says that Time magazine defined this show as "three moldy figs". I entirely agree. I would recommend this musical to those suffering from insomnia: it will put them to sleep right away.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable Barbara Harris
One of the greatest of all musical comedy singers, Barbara Harris never appeared in a show that was an unqualified hit, but her great turns in two flawed but much-loved mid-60s shows, ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER and THE APPLE TREE, have made her a great cult figure for Broadway fans. THE APPLE TREE, for which she won the Tony, is really rememberted best today as a vehicle for her amazing voice, charm, and versatility, and the cast recording of the original Broadway cast her beautiful open voice shines through to its best advantage. The show features three short stories all centering upon the Eve and temptation theme, and all set to music by Bock and Harnick, the team behind SHE LOVES ME and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. The last of the stories, "Passionella" by Jules Feiffer, was said to have been the funniest (and Harris's strange adenoidal intonations in the title role are pretty funny) but certainly did not have the most memorable songs, nor did the middle story, an adaptation of Frank Stockton's "The Lady or the Tiger?" The best songs by far are from the first of the trio, a version of Mark Twain's "The Diary of Adam and Eve," and the beautiful combination of the shimmering orchestrations and Barbara Harris's soaring voice on "Here in Eden" is a revelation. The act's other highlight, "What Makes Me Love Him?" should have survived as a standard: again, it brings out the best in Harris's lovely mellow voice. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A disappointing "Greatest"
This sterling line-up of songs by the witty tunesmith Cole Porter, as interpreted by some of the 20th-century's greatest singer/performers - Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, etc. - is surprisingly dull.Very little information accompanies the CD, and I suspect many of the numbers were recorded in mono, which might account for the weak stereo sound "enhanced" by digital technology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Show
Saw the broadway cast a couple days before opening and thought it was a sweet, warm hearted musical that would have played better off-broadway in a smaller venue. Have seen it several times since on smaller stages and was right. Much better as an intimate show than on a large broadway stage. Still, has a delightfully charming score, hits the nail on the head about fears of childbirth. Liz Callaway is wonderful. She should have become bigger on the NY stage. Very enjoyable CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it
This is one of the best musicals, in my opinion. The only thing better is to see a live performance of the show. Incredible voices sing fabulous music. It is so exciting to listen to!

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby Baby Baby...I Chose Right!
I wasn't familiar with this musical, until I saw a local production of the show few years ago. It quickly became one of my favorite musicals. The songs were very catchy and most of the songs have perceptive and touching lyrics that deal primarily with relationships.

This original 1956 production, with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Richard Wilbur, and libretto by Lillian Hellman, based on Voltaire's novel of the same name, was not a hit, except as a recording. 5-0 out of 5 stars Better words, better singing, all too brief!
Someday, a genius producer will make this show work, probably as a film instead of a staged production. Until then, we must bask in the fabulous music, the best of which, perfectly sung, remains on this all-too-abbreviated original cast recording. Ideally, this recording should be supplemented by Bernstein's 1989 recording of a complete score. The two together represent youth and age, sadly.
3-0 out of 5 stars I'd rather have the studio cast
after recently viewing candide in concert i took out the original cast and it was a disapointment.I'd rather have the studio cast recording because it has the stephen sondhiem lyrics aswell as the clasic bernstien music. the original only has 16 songs where as the studio cast has 34 songs, 10 more than the revival cast. my dad recieved tickets to the rvival cast directly from stephen sondhiem himself. the studio cast also has a lot of extra instrumental pieces such as the battle music.

4-0 out of 5 stars a Broadway milestone
Leonard Bernstein's CANDIDE was a Broadway flop when it first opened in 1956 at the Martin Beck Theatre, shuttering after an abysmal 73 performances.Though the show has never quite achieved the greatness it deserves, the Overture is considered to be one of the greatest, most thrilling ever written. The original 1956 cast album of the show has now been reissued on the Columbia Broadway Masterworks label.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Surrender to Sarah Brightman!!! :)
This CD is simply amazing!I prefer this album over "Dive" because Brightman sticks to what she knows best - which is opera!Surrender, Unexpected Song, Chanson D'efance, Tell Me on a Sunday, and Nothing Like You've Ever Known are simply brilliant and beautiful pieces music!Sadly, I do not prefer the 2 songs from Cats - about Macavaty and Gus.They really do not seem to fit to Brightman's style of music, for they are more outgoing! However, Memory from Cats (in Italian) is beautiful with soaring octaves!Everything's Alright is genius, with a 5/4 tempo, and it makes the song amazing.Pie Jesu is a beautiful piece, but I prefer Charlotte Church singing it.Brightman's vocals show to much vibrato, and it makes the song seem annoying!Amigos Para Siempre and the Spanish version of "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" are fairly decent pieces from Brightman. If you love the Brightman from "The Phantom of the Opera", then buy this album!!!

The first couple of songs were fair the next few were crap and the next were hogwash and the last showed how a beautiful voice could crumble with lousy songs chosen for her Terrible ablum especially for 30.00 really terrible

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Webber Ever
I loved the recent review about Jesus Christ Superstar. From the reading of Judas' fate to the chill down the spine.I heard this music for the first time when I was only 13 (back in Bulgaria) and it stayed with me ever since.I still get the chill down my spine when I hear Pilate's Dream.Like most Europeans, I am an atheist of course, however, I adore the biblical stories and their philosophical depth.I find Webber's genius to be just incredible.Nothing in his later works compares to JCS. I would recommend to everyone to SEE the fantastic Australian production of JCS on DVD, which Webber thought is the closest to his vision.I liked the slightly slower pace of music there. The choreography is most amazing, no less amazing than Ian Gillan's famous performance of I Only Want To Say.The look of everyone on this DVD is just incredible.Perhaps only Jesus is somewhat weaker, especially in comparison to Judas and everyone else.It is fascinating to see how Webber's music affects people the same way across different cultures.(vgarkov@mbc.edu)
5-0 out of 5 stars My God... !!!!
If I could give this 10 stars, it still would not be able to describe how amazing, moving and powerful this recording is. Ian Gillan is the ONLY Jesus; do not even attempt to put Ted Neeley in the same galaxy as Ian. As everyone before me has agreed, noone has EVER equaled his performance in Gethsemane. Murray Head's Judas is a complex and tragic character; a victim of God and of fate. I realise that this will rub some of you the wrong way, so I will bring up something in this review that has really stayed with me since I was able to comprehend the sick idea of fate and "God's will". The last words of Judas and Pilate's dream.
5-0 out of 5 stars What's the Buzz? I'll tell you what's happening...
The 70's version is absolutely the best. Murray Head and Ian Gillen's powerful vocals and emotional performance are fantastic and simply cannot be matched by Ted Neeley's somewhat whiny vocals. Although Carl Anderson made the Judas role his own. I think this musical is one of the best representations of what the 70's had to offer. Try it out...you are going to love it! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Children won't listen to this recording
Stephen Sondheim is a genius of musical theatre that's for certain.Into the woods is my all time favorite musical.I was really excited to hear they were going to do a revival of it with Vanessa Williams as the witch?Sounds great right?...Not so much.Vanessa isn't as great as you hope, and for some reason Shephen thought it would be a good idea to write new parts for almost every song or throw in every he cut from the first time.TO be perfectly honest this is the worst of the three recordings.Get the Broadway or (my favorite) the London recording.Do not waste your money or time with this one

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless Revival
I hate revivals, as a rule. Plain and simple. And this is one revival cast album that has done nothing to improve my attitude. I think it may have actually been the first actual revival cast album I ever heard, and first impressions are always everlasting.
2-0 out of 5 stars Very Weak Revival
Like many of the reviews, I agree this revival is a disappointment. As a fan of Vanessa Williams, I think too it was a mistake for her to played the witch. I enjoy original Into the Woods cast better. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars WhatHappened??
I'm not sure if this show was intentionally trying to be depressing or if it just happened.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Score ... Too Bad Show Didn't Last Longer
Opening in the Fall of 1997, "Side Show" was roughly based on the lives of Daisy & Violet Hilton, Siamese twins who were Vaudeville performers during the Depression.Unfortunately, the production lasted only lasted about three months before closing.
2-0 out of 5 stars Some Good Songs but I'd Recommend Other Musicals
Ok, I bought the CD because I heard a great song from this musical, "Feelings You've Got to Hide" (it wasn't even that good after listening to it again.) There were both positives to the CD and negatives. First the postivies: Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner have amazing voices and there are some great songs such as "I will Never Leave You". Now the negatives: the show did not live up to the potential it had. The two lead girls did not use the power in their voice that I would have like to have heard. The two lead males did not have the best voices (that is my personal opinion) as well. The lyrics were not that good and the story seemed forced. Other than a few good songs the musical was not that good and just was not the type of musical I enjoy. I would recommend musicals such as Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Avenue Q, etc. or musicals that has more than 7 songs you enjoy. There are good musicals but this just isn't one of them. ... Read more

Frank Wildhorn may get mixed reviews for his Broadway shows, but there's little question the man can write a pop song, and his greatest advocate happens to be his wife, Linda Eder. Preceding her 1999 breakout hit Read more
