Editorial Review

George and Ira Gershwin are probably the songwriters who have contributed the most standards to the American repertory, and Fitzgerald covers pretty much all of them in this mammoth enterprise. (The 53 songs were recorded in 1959 and originally came out in a five- LP box set.) Considering the scope of this collection, naming titles would be futile: rest assured that your favorite Gershwin tune is likely to be included. The singer's well-known versatility and musicality are in evidence, but what's especially amazing is the complete symbiosis between her and arranger/conductor Nelson Riddle. Fresh off injecting a shot of swing into Sinatra's career, Riddle enhances Fitzgerald's vocals rather than overwhelming her, and Fitzgerald, in turn, is stimulated by the musicians percolating behind her. Pure genius. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Too Bland
It's too bad that about 12 of the songs were on this set. Ella & Nelson can't make those 12 listenable. I feel that this isfar too costly for its mediocrity. It does have great stuff on it but not enough! Her Oh Lady Be Good is well worth it because of containing only great Gershwin.I do love My Cousin In Milwaukee which describes Ella's singing style. OK, MILWAUKEE IS MY HOME TOWN. Rather, than this, Ella's Rodgers & Hart Songbook deserves to have been a massive box set: 51 songs plus the instrumental Slaughter on 10th Ave.

3-0 out of 5 stars Remote and controlled
After all the fun, humour, sex and emotion of the Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter and Duke Ellington songbooks I couldn't wait to hear this. I'm disappointed. I love Ella above all other performers, but in this set she seems very subdued and so little of her sense of fun or mischief is in evidence thatI find it hard to believe that she enjoyed making these recordings. The heavy reverb with which her voice is recorded also increases the sense of remoteness. 5-0 out of 5 stars Bliss
I'm going to make this short. If I was stranded on an island for the rest of my days and could only have one album to listen to,this would be it. This record will make you laugh and cry. It is sheer poetry and a testament to not only the greatness of Ella, but the wonderful genius of George Gershwin. Nelson Riddle's arrangements are perfect. Okay...that's it, now buy this record! ... Tracks flow into each other with no "silence" between; its just like the "Living Stereo" black vinyl Long-Play records. All of the content on the LPs is indeed here.Awesome.
5-0 out of 5 stars God Bless Harry Belafonte
This album was always one of my favorites while growing up in Queens, New York. My parents would play it on weekends and all of us enjoyed the warmth, the love, and the calypso beat that we danced to in our living room. My Dad had one of the newest types of Hi-Fi stereo systems at that time (the 60's) and even he had a smile on his face as we all responded to the melodious charm of Harry Belafonte. Now, numerous years later, I play it for my own enjoyment and see that my grown kids also have a smile on their faces as Harry gets into the music and sings from his soul. Political comments aside (and we are all entitled to our opinions, last I checked...), this man is a gem and deserve a hearty 'thank you' for being gorgeous, gutsy, and that glorious voice, oh that voice!! Thank you, Mr. Belafonte!

5-0 out of 5 stars The complete concert, greatest live album ever made
Harry Belafonte, is on of the greatest, most influential man ever born in the United States, as well as a hero to the world as well as to all Americans. Mr. Belafonte,World WarII veteren, who volunteered and was on the battlefield, and still serves his nation and the World, with his international travel on behalf of Unicef.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tony at his best.
I've owned this album since 1966. It's never sounded dated. Johnny Mandel's string scorings are the best. And the piano accompaniments of Tommy Flanagan ("Smile") and Jimmy Rowles ("The Shadow of Your Smile") are of the highest artistic merit. Larry Wilcox's arrangement of The Days of Wine and Rose is great as is Al Cohn's arangement of The Trolley Song. Quincy Jones's arrangements are the greatest, too.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Nostalgic and Beautifully Sounding Classic
I think this is one of Tony Bennett's best albums on CD. I love "Samba De Orfeu" and "The Shadow Of Your Smile" because they possess that "in" sound that is so endearing and never seems to age with time touching a chord in all of us commenting about the beauty of just enjoying life. I love movies and the 60s and this album satisfies those two passions wonderfully. "Maybe September" sort of sums it all up. I really savor this album.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's never too later to pick up this CD...
One of the record label rages in the mid sixties along with the bossa nova album, was to have their artist record a movie songs album, for this was the hay day of pop movie tunes, reaching it's peak with Mancini's, "Moon River". "Tony Bennett's Movie Song Album", was perhaps the best of the bunch. The most prominent tune, "The Shadow of Your Smile" was a jukebox hitfrom the Taylor and Burton film," The Sandpiper". The balance of the theme songs that he recorded were unusual, not the standard fare, did anyone else record the title theme from ,"The Pawnbroker" or "The Oscar"? "The Trolley Song" from "Meet Me In St Louis" is here along with the wonderful Johnny Mandel song from The Americanization of Emily". I have listened to and loved this album for decades if you are not familiar with it sample some of the selections and see if you don't agree with me that it is one of Mr. B's best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a great soundtrack
If you love music scores, you definitely should pick up a copy of "Prince of Tides".The music score is excellent, particularly the main theme and the instrumental version of "For All We Know" (very romantic and sexy). This is perfect for weddings and anniversary parties, or for brides to walk down the aisle to.The two bonus songs by Barbara Streisand are great and don't break the flow established by the preceding score since both songs use music from the score, and the lyrics perfectly sum up the themes in the film.Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tuneful and romantic film score.
I would actually give this lush score three-and-a-half stars. The majority of this soundtrack to Barbra's second film as a director (which was a box office smash, by the way) consists of James Newton Howard's Oscar-nominated score, which is lovely and romantic, if a little too lightweight at times. However, the main attraction to this disc are the two newly recorded vocal tracks by Barbra - both are excellent and neither were used in the film.Barbra takes on the jazz standard "For All We Know" (an instrumental of which is heard in the film), and her lovely take just may be the definitive rendition of the song yet.
2-0 out of 5 stars Too depressing after the movie
The music on this CD is fabulous in the movie, which plays out with a different sort of plot than NUTS, yet similarly dramatic. POT, the music enhances the movie's drama without being overbearing. However, on it's own, if you've seen the movie first, or went through the rooting for Barbra to finally find love in real life (POT was produced before she met James Brolin), the music, while including a couple passionate pieces, is too depressing to stand out as a best. Well done, but grabsomething instrumentally funny or you might end up under some heavy violins for a while.Might have felt differently about this one if I didn't see the movie first. ... Read more

I LOVE this album.I wasn't a big Sinatra fan, but I can understand his appeal. His voice had (at one time) perfect pitch.I bought this for Fly Me to the Moon, but I absolutely love "Hello Dolly, "Wives and Lovers", "More", I Wish you Love", and I Believe in You."The arrangements are stunning and timeless.Beautiful sound, perfect for background.

Love this CD--they don't make music iike this today. What a great voice, arrangements and orchestra to go with great songs!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not The Best Basie Collaboration
I disagree with the reviewer who likes this over the first Sinatra - Basie album. There is no comparison. The Neal Hefti arrangements brought out the talent of Basie and his musicians.Quincy Jones was always a third rate arranger in my opinion. This has a few good songs on it but over all not nearly as good sthe first one. ... Having announced his retirement from the music biz in 1970, Sinatra returned in 1973 with this sadly uneven record. 5-0 out of 5 stars "Let Me Try Again"
Having announced his retirement from the music biz in 1970, Sinatra returned in 1973 with an album titled "Old Blue Eyes Is Back". As far as I'm concerned this album ranked up there with the best of Franks Albums. One song in particular in this album is "Let Me Try Again", which everyone thinks is a love song.
5-0 out of 5 stars OldBlueEyesIsBack-BIGTIME!
This is a GREAT Sinatra album. Do not pay attention to critics who describe it as a "mixed bag" or denegrate Sinatra's pipes. No, this is not the prime Sinatra of the Capitol years and, yes, his voice is a little rough around the edges, but SO WHAT?An aging Sinatra in 1973 was still light years ahead of any other vocalist - Martin, Bennett, Davis, Mathis.Remember this rule about the Great American Songbook:There is Sinatra and then there is everyone else. This is an eclectic album of great depth and feeling.Sinatra comments on the state of contemporary music through the lyrics of the songs, and he infuses the material with an artistic pathos that reinforces the musical genius of the man and his approach to the inner core of his craft. "You Will Be My Music," is a musical critique of the declining quality of the material available to a man whose standards and taste were unsurpassed."Send In The Clowns" is simply the definitive version of that song. There are no weak tracks on this album because Sinatra simply elevates whatever he performs to a higher level. This album marks the beginning of the final third of Sinatra's extraordinary career. It is a treasure, and it should be a part of every serious Sinatraphile's collection.Buy it and appreciate the complex emotional intensity that Frank brings to this disarmingly complex musical masterpiece.Five stars and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sinatra older but still the greatest
Frank was no 'spring chicken' when he recorded this in June of 1973 but it contains some beautiful work. In my view, whenever Gordon Jenkins, Don Costa and Frank Sinatra got together, it made for great music. I think the orchestration on this release is stellar, the best of all of Frank's albums.......in my opinion, there is not a bad track to be found here and it is well worth the money at twice the price. I have heard some say that this album showed Frank's voice was getting a bit thin by this time but Winners and You Will Be My Music still give me goose bumps every time I listen to them. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Simplistic and complicated.
This album has the strangest selections I've heard on a single recording. It runs the gamut from Stardust to I'm An Old Cowhand to Lazybones and on and on. Why the title 25?? It was released on his 25th birth date. 'I'm an old cowhand' was included for his then future mother-in-law who hails from Texas. Harry is a competent but not distintive singer however he more than compensates with his great piano playing but one of his teachers, Ellis Marsalis plays piano on stardust. Great organ on 'Lazybones'. If you buy this album and wonder if your woofer/subwoofer took a break, the final track will assure you they're in good shape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Total Pleasure From a Total Musician
Harry Connick Jr. is a complete musician, and for this reason everything he does deserves at least one listen. "25" contains numerous examples of his varied abilities, from the amazing piano playing on"Stardust" to the beautiful, expressive singing in the ballads.Connick does more than justice to "This Time the Dream's On Me",while the uptempo choices like "On the Atchison..." "I'm anOld Cowhand" and "Lazybones" display wit and charm alongwith formidable musicianship. One reason why Connick is such an appealingperformer is that he respects the original melodic line of a song, even ashe makes it his own. The beautiful tune in "Tangerine" is neverobscured, nor is that of "On the Street Where You Live". Only"Didn't He Ramble" disappoints as lesser piece of writing. Thebackup musicians, especially Johnny Adams, all approach Connick's league. Agreat place to start exploring Mr. Connick.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellence Indeed!
Tony Bennett hits another home run with this album. It is excellent. Some of the songs may be familiar but they are not the ones he is most known for. That does not stop them from being first rate nor does it stop him from doing and excellent job of singing them. So too is the quality of the recordings an excellent example of the recording arts.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best Bennett ever!
The Art of Excellence is a selection of twelve songs which brings Tony's very soul to your heart. The best Why Do People Fall In Love and How Do You Keep The Music Playing, to date. Moments Like This, Forget The Woman and When Love Was All We Had are simply fantastic. You won't forget Forget The Woman and Everybody Has The Blues. 5 very big stars! Just buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tony Bennett MASTERPIECE !
Five Big Stars!!!!! SUPERB Bennet performances in a totally captivating set of carefully selected songwriting jewels. Spinning MESMERIZING performances, one after another, this is clearly one of Tony Bennet's best recordings and therefore an ESSENTIAL RECORDING for any fan of ballads, blues, and esoteric pop songs. Tony has a flair for finding little known tasteful songs that deserve more respect from singers and listeners. All songs are done up in fascinating Jorge Calandrelli arrangements played by a huge string laden orchestra which Jorge conducts. And yes, Ralph Sharon's amazing pianism and trio are here. Perfect!! 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best torch albums recorded
With its amazing song selection (a great combination of lesser and well known standards), its Billie Holiday-drag tempo and with Sinatra's genius intrepretation you have one of the best down and out "suicide" records ever made. On this record Sinatra really plumbs the depths of despair. It's actually hard to listen to for me. But if you've ever been heartbroken or are going through some kind of emotional turmoil put this record on and you will find a great friend - someone to cry with. Sinatra really understands the lows of existence - the emotional nihilism that haunts us all. Listen to this record it is a total masterpiece!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Ponderous stuff
I am writing this to add a dissenting voice to these high praise proceedings."No One Cares" is my least favorite of the classic 50s Capitol lps Sinatra recorded.Blame the ponderously slow pace, the pretentious Jenkins arrangements and Sinatra's quavery, somewhat strained delivery of these tunes. There is a lack of humor and bounce here, two qualities Sinatra normally had plenty of ("Can't Get Started" in particular comes off stilted) and compared to another torchy record -- "Wee Small Hours" -- "No One Cares" feels dreary.Nelson Riddle managed to bring swingier, more bouyant elements to "Wee Smalls" set of love songs, while keeping the tempo slow.It is still Sinatra, and still worth hearing, but in my opinion this collection sounds dated, something that cannot be said for most of the other Capitol albums.

5-0 out of 5 stars NO ONE CARES....

I had this lp years ago and lost it in a flood.I am so happy to finally find it on CD.Sinatra's recording of Wave is the best ever done by anyone and that track alone is worth purchasing this collection.Sinatra - probably the greatest singer to ever grace the planet, knew how to handle the Jobim material with complete artistry.A must for any serious fan of Sinatra and especially for any serious singer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why it means so much to me
I'm as familiar to Willis Conover's voice as I am to Dad's. Conover's legendary Jazz Hour on VOA was a source of unfailing inspiration to people from all over the world and carried significance to East-Europeans living under oppressive Socialist dictatorship. Jazz Hour was one of the subtler weapons used by the US administration to promulgate its Capitalist vision and the famed American Dream.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tony Bennett is excellent, specially in this album!!!!!,
I love Tony, because of his voice and his performence is excellent, specially this album. When I had my first album titled: Bleu Velvet I was amazed and his songs are touching. My favourite songs are Stranger In Paradise, Rags To Riches, I Wanna Be Around and Tender Is The Night. I saw the movie Goodfellas when I was 15 years old and I never heard about Tony Bennett. In the movie I heard the song Rags to Riches and I jumped of my chair and I was touched. Almost every friday night when I come from a hard day work I listen to Tony's music and It really relaxes me. My mother had a bunch of Tony Bennett records when she was 20 years old and she was and still is favourit by the song Stranger In Paradise. I recommend every one who loves jazz to listen to Tony Benneth because he is one of the best singers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Evocative of the Smoky Old Barroom
This one is called "Here's to the Ladies" and the name fits but it could just as well have been called "Smoky old Barrooms" for the music evokes images of being in just such a setting and listening to the musician. All of the songs do indeed make some reference to women and therein lies much of the appeal. These songs tug at the heartstrings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another fantastic Christmas CD of Perry Como!
This is another fantastic CD, further exploring the wonderful vocal talents of Perry Como at his favourite time of year!
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Xmas Compilation Of All Time
Okay, I admit it: I'm prejudiced.I love Perry Como, and have, ever since I was old enough to know who he was, and what he did.Everyone loves a lover, and everyone should love a singer, if that singer is the fabulous Mr. Como. Part of the joys of Xmas, if you grew up in the 50's, 60's, or 70's, were the Xmas specials with Perry Como or Andy Williams. It's pretty hard to find any DVD's of Perry these days, but there are some very nice CD's available, and this is one of the best.I just got it today, and I have been playing it ever since I pulled it out of the box.Fall in love with life, love, and Christmas. You just can't help it with the mellow, fabulous voice of Perry Como playing in the background of your life. There are some non-Xmas songs on this, but since they include Turn Around, long a favorite of mine, that doesn't bother me one bit.It truly can be Xmas year round if you have this wonderful disc.Love you Perry C!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great - But not Best Como Christmas Effort
I was looking for a Perry Como album after listening to his contributions on the Time-Life Christmas series and wanting to hear more. His voice seems absolutely made for Christmas music, and there is much here to delight you.The 10 minute story of Christmas is very interesting and moving as is his rendition of Ave Maria. He also has several lighter numbers, Santa Claus is Coming to Town in particular is an excellent example of music from a different genre.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Some great songs as only Sammy could sing 'em !!!
People can agree or disagree on whether or not the songs on this CD are really his very best; but there's no disagreement on this: this is a whopper of a CD! Each and every song packs a punch as only Sammy could sing them; and this CD proves it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Sammy Davis
The songs are okay but not what I expected. Most songs are from a live show and I wanted original recordings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only forty minutes of tracks, but worth every second...!
Sammy does not merely sing: He entertains. This CD, containing live recordings of several classic numbers, is not simply background music. You'll want to take the time to sit down and listen and have fun.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Barbra Streisand: Barbra-The Concert Highlights (1995)
In May of 1995, Barbra Streisand released her thirty-fifth album entitled, BARBRA: THE CONCERT HIGHLIGHTS. This concert album, which is adapted from her BARBRA: THE CONCERT ALBUM, features the best performances from that album. A rare treasure in the music field, and a very well thought-out treat for the fans.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good buy for casual fans.
Recordings of THE CONCERT were such a big success on both record and television that Columbia decided to release a single-disc "highlights" that would provide an alternative for those who loved the show, but didn't want to invest in the more pricey two-disc set. While the HIGHLIGHTS disc only peaked at #81 on the Hot 200, it did eventually reach Gold status in sales, which proves that Columbia's instincts in the matter were correct. In making the transition from two disc to one, the nearly two hour show had to be condensed down to just under 80 minutes.5-0 out of 5 stars It's a Streisand album, isn't she always wonderful?
I am a twelve year old Barbra fan, and this is one of her best albums. Not only does she sing, but she also takes some time to talk with the audience.Barbra is simply wonderful, and she always has been.I wouldreccomed that anyone buy it.If a twelve year old could like her music, then who can't?If you are a first time listner, this is one great CD.Itproves that Barbra is "still going strong" ... Editorial Review

Bing Crosby has been called the "Voice of the Century," a title that's rooted in considerably more art and accomplishment than mere show-biz hype. Others may have scaled more spectacular peaks during the 20th century, but one could make a well grounded argument that without Crosby's pioneering vocal artistry the careers of Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley might well have never blossomed. This 50-track double-disc anthology chronicles the most productive years of the crooner's career, a period that spans the early '30s to the mid-'50s; his final years at RCA largely rested on the laurels garnered herein. His rich, effortlessly dreamy baritone has become a pop-culture cliché, but it was in fact as radically pioneering in its day as anything the King or the Chairman of the Board would muster in later decades. Radio and modern electronic recording were in their infancy on many of the '30s hits here, yet Crosby mastered both with preternatural grace--and an innate, jazz-born sense of timing--he later brought to his successful film and TV careers. What's remarkable here is the breadth of styles and influences Crosby's dulcet tones make there own here. The dizzying slate here includes standards and early hits ("Star Dust" and "Where the Blue of the Night" in Decca re-recordings of his original Brunswick sides), country-western ("New San Antonio Rose," "Don't Fence Me In"), island exotica ("Sweet Leilani," "Blue Hawaii"), Irish affectations ("McNamara's Band," "Galway Bay"), holiday favorites ("Silent Night," "White Christmas") and film hits ("Pennies From Heaven," "Swinging On a Star"), performances that represent the very cornerstone of American vocal tradition. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Sampler!
I bought 9 copies of this - one for myself, one for each of my seven siblings, and one for my parents.Growing up, we had lots of Bing Crosby music in the house (along with various other wonderful artists).I gravitated to Bing, and my siblings remember that - and were tickled to receive these 'samplers' during in Bing's 100th year. Why? Because, while Bing wasn't their favorite, he was *A* favorite of theirs, yet they had nothing of his on CD!The variety of themes reminds us how vast Bing's repetoire was.5-0 out of 5 stars Two and one half hours of recorded bliss!!!!
For years,I have been searching for a comprehensive collection of Bing Crosby's Decca recordings.Since his career at Decca spanned a quarter century, and because he was such a prolific artist, it seemed that I might never find what I was looking for.But this collection, released in 2003 has it all. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent edition.Great songs, Great quality.
These two cd's are fantastic. Excellent quality with beautiful songs.A good edition. I'm on my way to purchasing all the Bing Crosby cd's which will probably take a lifetime. But this edition put a good dent in the time it'll take to acquire them all.Read more
