5-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Concept Album
Not many artist have the talent and experience enough to record an album with homogenity such as this interesting and somewhat strange concept album. It does evoke a feeling magical yearning that I myself couldn't explain.
5-0 out of 5 stars Rain Or Shine - Wet Is Slick!
From the opening lyrics of the album's title cut, Barbra sings "Wet is rain, rain is clean and new" to the closing lyrics of the closing track "Kiss Me In The Rain," Barbra sings "I don't even mind if I get wet," and all of the songs in between, Barbra clearly has her first aquatic-themed album. Is this an unusual theme? Yes. Most artists have themed albums such as songbooks made famous by other artists, or a mix of ethnic material that other singers have made so popular in the past, but not our Barbra. Barbra stands alone. Her unique voice has found a unique theme and the results are saturated with her glorious voice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Barbra Streisand: Wet (1979)
In October of 1979, Barbra Streisand had released her twenty-fifth album entitled WET. The album is appropriately titled and describes water in different ways, like tears on "I Ain't Gonna Cry Tonight", & "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)", the ultimate diva duet with Donna Summer, rain on "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "Kiss Me In The Rain", "On Rainy Afternoons", and "After The Rain", waterfalls on "Niagra", water on "Splish Splash", or just being wet on "Wet".

1-0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE Don't be fooled, these ARE NOT originals!
I looked at the glowing reviews for this CD set and failed to read them carefully -- one reviewer said "Brits Ken Barnes and Pete Moore selected a large number [of Bing's songs] and added full stereo orchestral and choral accompaniment. This gives us Bing in prime voice, but with more modern arrangement." Therefore, if you want REAL Bing, as HE recorded the songs, this CD is not for you. The songs have now been Nat King Cole-ified or smooth jazz-ified with 80s/90s straight tone a capella style singers. There's nothing wrong with these styles of jazz, but they're just not Bing! Absolutely no vibrato from the backup singers, horrors!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Bing Crosby [2 CDs]
The "Best of Crosby" title does not match the content, as too many songs seem to be just filling space.Nobody would ever rank the opening song about golf, for example, as one of Crosby's best.On the other hand, his command of so many pieces, both jazz and pop, help one recall just good he was/is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good sampling of the mature Bing
I would quibble that this CD represents "the best" of Bing Crosby, even though the material covered here is pretty darn good. All of these standards were recorded long past Crosby's vocal heyday, which would have been the 1932-45 era, but if you're a fan of the mature Bing, then this is right up your alley. This is a pleasing introduction for those who don't have other Crosby CD's in your collection or who are weak in the post-1950 period of his career. It contains his standard hits like "True Love" which have been recycled time and again on other anthologies, but it also contains some little-known gems. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview of Tony's Remarkable Career!
This boxset is a great start for someone just discovering or long-time fan who wants a great overview of Tony's career on CD, what I love about this set is that features songs that showcase Tony as the Jazz singer, it does feature alot of pop standards but Tony swings on those too! and the ballads are just beautiful!
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Coolest Smooth Singers Ever
Tony Bennett has always moved me with His voice. from the time I was a child through now His Voice has always been on point to me."I Left my Heart in San Francisco" is still One of My all time Favorite Songs.I dig how He uses His Vocal Tone on Tracks&Keeps things cool.TB has always kept it cool on whatever Project he was working on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insufficiently Fresh
Essentially, this IS the "Forty Years" offering plus an extra CD for the past decade. Considering the plethora of gems, especially live music, that must (please God) still be available in the archives, this set is a disappointment to owners of "Forty Years".Of course, its still Tony Bennett, arguably the greatest interpreter of American popular standards, there's lots of music, and the selections are generally solid. However, the sound quality is a bit uneven at times and grossly under-represents his live contributions (shockingly, Carnegie Hall 1962 is still the only all-live generally available recording from his first three decades of output). Still, this collection is the definitive take on Mr. Bennett's musical life work to date. Tony Bennett...long may he live. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rediscovering Barbra
I am wowed by this 4-disc set. It is a wonderful career retrospective with a generous selection of songs from the 60s (2 discs), 70s, and 80s. Also comes with a beautiful booklet that illustrates the career history.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Diva!
This box set has many surprises and good songs. A definitely must have for Barbra fans and a great introduction to new Barbra fans out there.Barb has been around for a few decades and she has kept her voice nicely without staying in the same stage. From the first song to the last of this compilation, one will understand why she is still around. She is a special entertainer with many talents. With the people who she collaberates with, one should understand she is not that difficult to work with. There are songs that may not be the best of hers but the booklet tells you why she didnt chose them for her album in the first place. She has made a good choice on songs, not too new but stuff that we have not heard of.It is not that those songs she put in this boxset is crap, it is just because they were not "right" for the albums. The historical and pictures are wonderful to look at. Barbra is simply a diva! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Your Face Beams In My Dreams In Spite Of All I Do. . . Everything Seems To Bring Memories Of You"
This gem of a CD from my collection is classified as "My Parents Music."I have been replicating my late parents' collection of long playing records (Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Doris Day, Rosemary Clooney, Kitty Kallen, to name a few) in CD formats and it's been an on-going project for me and a very enjoyable one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Early fifties pop
Rosemary's music of the early fifties reflected the times in which they were recorded, featuring some truly brilliant songs culled from a variety of sources interspersed with the occasional silly song..
5-0 out of 5 stars The elegant and dramatic vocal phrasings of Rosemary Clooney
"16 Biggest Hits" is a misnomer as a title because these are not, literally, the 16 biggest hits in the music career of Rosemary Clooney. Two of her Top 10 hits, "Beautiful Brown Eyes" and "The Night Before Christmas Song," are not included, which proves the point. But it is still a solid collection with a couple of tracks you might not have in your music library that would well be worth the adding. My top choice would be the duet "Sisters," the Irving Berlin song from the classical holiday film "White Christmas," which Rosemary sings with her sister Betty Clooney.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Barbra shines...
This is a must-have for any Streisand fan AND/OR those who love Christmas and winter. The songs are varied, and the imagery is fabulous. Barbra wraps her beautiful vocals around I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS, CHRISTMAS MEM'RIES, and CHRISTMAS LULLABYE and the tears start to flow; she handles IT MUST HAVE BEEN THE MISTLETOE with ease, and I love the Barbra Mandrell original. Then, there are the visions of snow and bare trees and vast sky as she sings I REMEMBER and SNOWBOUND. And AVE MARIA, CLOSER, and ONE GOD add the spiritual feel and reverence for this time of year that are important to all of us. Masterfully-written songs and lush orchestration make this a signature Barbra recording. Give yourself a gift this Christmas. This is one present you will enjoy "unwrapping" the entire season.

5-0 out of 5 stars Barbra Streisand: Christmas Memories (2001)
In October of 2001, Barbra Streisand released her thirty-ninth album entitled, CHRISTMAS MEMORIES. This would actually be Barbra Streisand's second Holiday album, since THE CHRISTMAS ALBUM in 1967. This Christmas album lives up to the reputation of Barbra's first Holiday album and it really puts me into that Christmas mood.
5-0 out of 5 stars You'll never forget this Christmas
Buying this CD will surely make your Christmas one to remember.I am a great fan of Streisand and I have grown with her voice since I was 10 years old.I bought her first CHristmas Album when I was 15 and it was thrilling...so you can imagine how thrilled I was to get hold of her second piece of artistic work...her voice is angelic as she sings Ave Maria (I wish she could have sung it during my wedding Mass).

3-0 out of 5 stars (Almost) obsolete hits collection
This was one of the first CDs I ever bought, which was in 1989 while in high school. At that time, there was a dearth of Sinatra collections and I just wanted a starter CD. This is a decent collection of songs from the Reprise years, though not one I would purchase today due to the fact this material can be found on more recent, more comprehensive collections. Even though Amazon lists the original release date as 1961, I believe it was actually 1968. Many, if not all, of the songs on this collection were recorded after 1961. Note the title is "Greatest Hits," not "Best Of." These are songs that hit the pop charts and are not necessarily his best songs. Some are classic Sinatra, such as "Strangers in the Night," "Summer Wind," "It Was a Very Good Year," and "That's Life."However, there are also some you might have never heard before, such as "Somewhere in Your Heart," "Forget Domani" or "This Town." These are not bad songs, yet are certainly not indicative of his best work. The essential songs in this collection can also be found on "Sinatra Reprise: The Very Good Years," with one exception: "Somethin' Stupid." If it weren't for the omission of this track from "The Very Good Years," this collection would be completely obsolete. Furthermore, the twelve tracks on this disc run a total of just over thirty minutes. This might have been acceptable in 1968, but is ridiculous compared to today's standards. To add insult to injury, this CD has not been digitally mastered; as such, a slight hiss can be heard. Even though there are some very good songs here, don't bother with this CD. (At the time of this writing, this CD retails for $10.99. I certainly wouldn't pay more than $5.00 for it)

4-0 out of 5 stars worth it for the cheese factor alone
In 1963, the strain of wearing so many hats in the entertainment industry led Frank Sinatra to jettison one of them: he sold his controlling interest in Reprise Records, the head of a record label no longer.Part of that strain had been caused by his difficulties in generating the kind of smash hits on the singles charts that he had enjoyed during his glory years at Capitol, and of his new albums competing with Capitol dumping his back catalogue onto the market at cut-rate price.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST SONGS BY THE GREATEST SINGER
THIS IS A GREAT CD. BUT WHAT MAKES IT A SUPER GREAT CD ARE THE TWO GREATEST SONGS THAT FRANK SINATRA ( THE GREATEST SINGER OF THE 20TH CENTURY) SANG. THOSE TWO ARE "SUMMER WIND" AND "OVER & OVER THE WORLD WE KNEW". I REST MY CASE. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A for effort, C for execution
One does have to applaud Barbra for the effort, for showing that she really does care about music, not just her own.Everyone knows about her forays into pop, rock and even disco.Alas, while her voice is lovely, it seems more like an album of lullabies than classical lieder. She actually did a more authentic classical performance of a Schubert song on her TV special "Barbra Streisand and Other Musical Instruments."Alas, this serious effort never comes close to showing the range of her voice that she played with in that 2 1/2 minute song.A missed opportunity.

5-0 out of 5 stars BARBRA,BARBRA,BARBRA!
This CD shows why Streisand is who she is; the ultimate DIVA! This lady can sing anything and on this wonderful collection she proves it. Barbra recored the album way back in 1973, and because the record label was afraid of low sales due to the classical nature of the material, didn't release it until 1976. What a treat for fans of Barbra and fans of classical music. Barbra showcases hew vocal strengths in the 10 tracks singing in different languages. I first heard this CD at a dinner party 15 years ago and pretty much forgot about it until I saw a few for sale on Ebay. I remembered loving it and immediately bought it through Amazon. I highly recommend this CD for all those people who simply love music. It will put you in a very relaxed mood, almost as if your home is filled with candles. Since I bought it I've listened to it at least 20 times or more and will continue playing it in my home. Don't worry if you can't understand what Barbra is saying if you don't comprehend the laguage of the song; you'll know it's still Barbra doing what she does the best. A few final notes ; Barbra Streisand was nominated for a Grammy for the album. And Streisand has personally stated that this was the hardest album vocally she has ever worked on in her career. In short a beautiful CD for any home.

5-0 out of 5 stars A promise fulfilled
In 1963, when Streisand released her first album, there was no doubt she was a unique and talented singer. Some ten years later, after becoming a great success, she proved with "Classical Barbra" what a nurtured and developed talent is capable of. She didn't sit on her laurels and continue to churn out Broadway warhorses in an attempt to play it safe. Instead, like a true artist, she challenged her abilities. Her reward, and ours as well, is this absolutely gorgeous CD. Her voice, at a level of near perfection, glides effortlessly across each tender note of these well picked gems. If anyone ever doubted man's reason for existence, please, do yourself a favor and buy this CD. You will be inspired for a lifetime.

Editorial Review

Nat "King" Cole endured more than his share of scorn and rebuke from all manner of fans and critics. He wasn't jazzy enough to satisfy many, not white enough to please the pop cultural obsession with Anglo- and Euro-American stardom. In answer to all of this, Cole simply proceeded, crooning beautifully even after he'd walked away from the piano and become primarily a vocal sensation. This 1956 collection is famous as Cole's riposte to the critique that he wasn't jazzy. The session brings several Swing Era stars on board: violinist Stuff Smith, trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, trombonist Juan Tizol, and alto saxophonist Willie Smith. The horns and violin fronted a semistandard jazz setup of guitar, drums, and percussion, along with Cole's own considerable chops on piano. As an improviser, Cole heavily influenced a generation of ivory ticklers, including Oscar Peterson and others, and here he shows himself a stellar pianist. His runs bespeak Cole's utter perfection on the keyboard. This is a crucial document. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique Nat King Cole collection
There is some great stuff here that you won't find anywhere else, including one of my favorites, "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" (Lavene/Nast/Hadamik), that I simply can't find anywhere else and sheet music for it doesn't seem to exist. Willie Smith plays some sweet sax, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars better than a greatest hits CD
"greatest hits" collections are nice but usually they have a quality of being too familiar. These are just familiar enough. These songs became standards, and the title says it all. After midnight has a relaxed quality to Nat's piano playing. Not to be rushed, he sings with ease of a late night jam with enough intensity to warm your insides."You can depend on me" alone is worth the entire purchase price and you still get 17 more songs!!!

when i was a little kid i had this album on cassette , and i played it till it broke. every song on this album is wonderful. now i have it on cd and it is still one of my favorites.
5-0 out of 5 stars Songbird is a Streisand classic... Stop comparing it to Superman!
A lot of reviewers are unfairly comparing Songbird to it's predecessor, Streisand Superman. They are both great! They are just extremely different.Compared with the space-age futuristic upbeats of Superman, Songbird is much more simple, with accoustic guitars and mellow tempos.
3-0 out of 5 stars Even Streisand can have an off day...
Although it sold well and had a hit single with the "Evergreen"-like title track, Streisand's 'Songbird' is just a bit under-nourished. La Barbra croons passively through a collection of songs that are neither memorable nor underwhelming, the best of which, a light, inoffensive reading of "Tomorrow" (from 'Annie'), shows off a girlish, almost innocent side to the singer-star that is quite appealing. But the homespun image she tries projecting here and on the cover shot is incongruous to the seductress she creates on "A Man I Loved", "Love Breakdown", and the soft-core workout "Honey, Can I Put On Your Clothes?" (what would happen if he said 'no'?). A solo version of "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" is nice (it's her song anyway) and I liked the break-up ode "I Don't Break Easily", which is a little bitter and a little lonely and makes separating easier to fathom. Still, Streisand is a bit lax on these selections; her flawless voice really could've been used to greater effect during this peak period. B- ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Chemistry Makes These Tracks Shine
I am quite sure that there are few duets of any musical genre, regardless of the artists, that can easily match the magical chemistry that these two performers exhibit on these wonderful tracks.I could be wrong, but I believe that much of the magic is due to the total musicality of Louis Armstrong, a giant personality who could probably duet with anyone and have the results cook. There is, I believe, an equal chemistry on the two tracks that Louis Armstrong recorded with Billie Holiday for Decca.
4-0 out of 5 stars I like the two together
Hello,
5-0 out of 5 stars If you could own only one music collection ...
This set has every worthwhile song ever recorded by what may be the best musical duo ever. And even though the price tag may seem high for a collection of ancient standards that for the most part had already been remastered for single-CD collections, I see it as a good value for money given the quality of the packaging and the fact that almost everything Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong ever recorded is here.Read more

Although the story is not quite accurate as far as the life of Red Nichols, it is certainly a "feel good" movie. For all music lovers, and especially the ones who want to be in the ambiance of the 1920's, it is a must.Danny kaye was not only a great entertainer, he was a great musician, and the performances that he did in the movie speaks for themselves. No wonder Red Nichols was glad that he played his role in the movie, he is not only unique, he is great.I highly recommend this movie for anyone who miss the real "simple life"...

5-0 out of 5 stars The Five Pennies on DVD
The record of the soundtrack of Five Pennies has been in my family for years, it is old and scratched and I have never until now been able to replace it or find a copy. It was wonderful to find it on DVD via Amazon, I simply typed "Five Pennies" on Google and that was that! The music is as fresh and delightful as when we first enjoyed the film together as a family, many years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Classic
I don't know how many times I saw this movie growing up..it was probably my first exposure to jazz...louis is great, and frankly so is danny kaye....the five pennies and red nichols are superb...this is very upbeat jazz....I have anticipated it's release for some time now and I'm not disappointed.....a lot of great horn all around ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An honor for a man, well deserved
As a jazz great, and a charming singer with a rustic voice, he proved to bring light and joy to the music. His trumpet skills was refreshing and many of the songs have brought tears to my eyes. His range of vocal skills and jazz rhythm has impressed many and one of his vocal artistry in "What a Wonderful World" provides the imagery he captures with his vision of beauty and grace. It would also make a wonderful addition to any collection of Louis Armstrong's recordings for fans who want to re-create the man who had existed not only once, but more than once.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT GENIUS&TEACHER OF MUSIC
What Hasn't Been said about The Great Musician that is Louis Armstrong? 5-0 out of 5 stars Classic songs, classic performer, how could you not buy this?
I love the old-timers, their music and their style! It is an understatement to say that, "They don't make 'em like they used to!"I am an elementary school teacher and I like to give my studentsthe opportunity to sample "good" music while they are learning inmy classroom. This music qualifies in that category! That's why I want tomake it part of my personal collection! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Really good used good
The quality of the CD is excellent and I am completely satisfied with the transaction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to Italian-American experience
My husband is a second generation Italian-American and played this CD so much that it started growing on me.Actually, he played the movie from which this sound track was derived until I went nuts and got this CD for him. Although the movie is wonderful until you've seen it more than ten times, then it gets old, this soundtrack is timeless, and all the more so when my husband tells me what it was like growing up in his culture and listening to Louis Prima and other Italian and Italian-American music.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Italian Vibe
I loved the film and love the music on this CD even more. The Louis Prima / Rosemary Clooney cuts are great fun but check out Claudio Villa and Matteo Salvatore 's numbers. They are so wonderful! Real Italian music with soulful vocals and great musicianship.Read more

Editorial Review

Recorded live at New York's Madison Square Garden, this 1974 album provides ample testament to Sinatra's Mt. Rushmore-sized status as an American icon: This isn't the performer singing here, but the legend. (The introduction, by famously obnoxious sports commentator Howard Cosell, is hardly intended to minimize the sense of occasion.) From "The Lady Is a Tramp" to "My Way," every one of the Chairman of the Board's vocal inflections seems calculated to convey maximum Sinatra-ness; if he occasionally lapses into self-parody ("Bad, Bad Leroy Brown"), and his voice has lost a few steps, at least it sounds like he's having a good time. 5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent as Sinatra himself!
I have read some negative reviews about the video of this concert, and I`m quite surprised about the difference with the opinions about the CD. Let me tell you I`m a Sinatra fan, and, even recognizing that in this time his voice doesn`t sound the same as before, it still is the master of connecting to people. You can finish convinced that he lived the stories he sings to us.
5-0 out of 5 stars An All-Time Great...
This CD is a wonderful live performance.Even though at this point he was getting on up in age, he still sounds great. He had true talent and there aren't many singers out there today with that good ol' true talent.I'm 17 and absolutely love Frank Sinatra.I recommend this CD as well as every single one of his CD's.Also the Rat Pack CD's go along great.Everytime I listen to this CD, I wish I had been there when he performed.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's An Awesome Album
This is, perhaps, the greatest Sinatra live album ever.No one who even thinks he might like Sinatra should be without it. ... Read more

Pauline Kael once took note of some romantic musical numbers in a Marx Brothers film that were intended, according to a movie executive, "for people to identify with." "What people?" she sensibly asked. One can only imagine what Kael might have to say about Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I leran more from the reviews of others about Barbra's poltics
First- the album has beautiful music and the songs tell a story, for they are chosen to reflect the path both her and her new husband took before meeting.
2-0 out of 5 stars Our girl
Went to her latest "concert" and let me tell you, save your money. It's not so much a concert as her own little political rally. You get to hear whats left of her voice in between her political diatribe and side show.Mindless socialist drivel. What Babs forgets is that she is the beneficiary of our democratic financial empire. But she defends and comforts the socialist leaders of the world.Funny Girl indeed.
5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT! AWESOME! The greatest love album EVER!
After her 1998 marriage, Barbra decided to dedicate an album to her new husband and their great love that smells like evergreen... Well, well done!! That's what I have to say.
