3-0 out of 5 stars Barbra Streisand: Je M'appelle Barbra (1966)
In October of 1966, Barbra Streisand released her eighth album entitled, JE M'APPELLE BARBRA. This was not that great of an album, putting it into a three-star position.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning!!!!!
This is truly a magnificant piece of work and is a must for anyone who not only appreciates Barbra Streisand, but art.3-0 out of 5 stars 'Autumn Leaves' is worth the price of admission!
I have every album she has ever released and although this is certainly not one of my favorite, I do adore the song 'Autumn Leaves'. It is my all-time favorite Barbra song! (And that's a very tough call.) It is haunting and subtle (subtle is not how I would describe most of this album). It never fails to send chills down my spine. Whenever I want to re-introduce someone to her incredible 'VOICE'I play this selection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST RECORDINGS OF THE 20TH CENTURY
THIS IS PURE, CRYSTALLINE STREISAND AT THE PEAK OF HER MESMORIZING, CAPTIVATING AND ORGINAL STYLE THAT UNFORTUNATELY NO LONGER EXSITS. FORTUNATELY, IT WAS RECORDED FOR US TO ENJOY OVER AND OVER. YES, MOST OF HER OTHER EARLY ALBUMS ARE A PHENOMENON TOO, BUT THIS ONE IS THE MASTER OF PERFECTION WHEN IT COMES TO DEFINING BARBRA STREISAND. IT HAS NEVER BEEN MATCHED BY ANYONE AND IS AS EXCITING TO LISTEN TO TODAY AS IT WAS IN 1965. MY WISH LIST WOULD BE A COMPANION VIDEO OF SEEING HER SING EACH SONG. THIS ABLUM QUITE FRANKLY IS NOT TO BE MISSED!

5-0 out of 5 stars Barbra Streisand: People (1964)
In September of 1964, just six months after releasing her third album entitled, THE THIRD ALBUM, Barbra Streisand released her fourth album entitled, PEOPLE. Now, this album gets that fifth star. I have really enjoyed this album after hearing the whole thing. Barbra's voice seems to be becoming more and more beautiful, as well as becoming much stronger.
5-0 out of 5 stars Classic early Streisand
This is a great album from Barbra Streisand's early career. It was her 4th album, released in 1964. Far better than the two albums that came out before this one. I like this album a lot because all of the songs have this certain quality. They feel like epics. She sounds wonderful vocally. The title track is a classic ballad and hasn't lost its beautiful simplistic message. Other favorites for me include "Supper Time", "Will He Like Me", "Don't Like Goodbye's", "Absent Minded Me", "I'm All Smiles" and more. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Some don't quite get it
Sinatra and other crooners are good, no doubt about it. But those who hear only Bennett's "raspy" voice and cannot comprehend SOUL, won't like him. If you appreciate heart and soul, Bennett is for you. If all you want to listen to is polish, maybe you don't quite get what art and music is all about.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK, But Nothing To Swing About
You want great ballad singing? Buy a CD by Vic Damone, Mel Torme, or Matt Monro. You want great swing singing? Buy a CD by Bobby Darin or Frank Sinatra. You want singing that's not quite as good in either category, then perhaps Tony Bennett is right for you. This is an okay collection, but Bennett's raspy-voiced screaming is certainly not for everyone. Certain singers, like Bennett, assume that if you have a powerful voice (even if its tonality is unpleasant) you must sing all songs at the top of your lungs. Rarely do such histrionics add anything to a pretty melody or romantic lyric. Bennett likes to think of himself as a great "jazz singer" who performs the compositions of Jewish-American songwriters and black orchestra leaders. I guess this self-description makes him feel "hip." In fact, Bennett is often a screechingly annoying balladeer and on uptempo numbers his style is about as hip as Conway Twitty's. And all that screaming!!! Tony, your head is about to explode!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Tony Bennett is a minor leaguer among major leaguers
I agree with the music fan from Potts Grove, Pennsylvania: Tony Bennett is a screamer with a grating, raspy voice who too often sounds like his head is about to explode. Bennett's "Greatest Hits" album has some nice tunes like "San Francisco" and "I Wanna Be Around," but many of the other selections feature Bennett's typical screaming at the top of his lungs even when the tune does not call for such volume and vocal histrionics. It's true, when I think back at watching him perform on TV over the years, his neck and face did grow red and contort as he screamed out lyrics. Like Barbra Streisand, Bennett must think that good singing equates with yelling and screaming. When he does keep his human vibrato under control, he sings a nice (although not great) ballad. He also does have good taste in the classic pop material he records, but his voice grows increasingly grating as you listen to it. With Sinatra, Darin, Martin, Crosby, Matt Monro, etc. dead, there are few classic popular singers remaining (Jack Jones and Vic Damone are the only two who come to mind)and so Bennett fills a necessary gap----but he is no Vic Damone or Jack Jones as a balladeer, nor is he a Bobby Darin or Frank Sinatra as a swinging belter of uptempo tunes. He is just there....tasteful but often annoying. Better invest in a pair of ear plugs before listening to this CD. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Let's take it nice and easy.
This album by Frank Sinatra was recorded in the Spring of 1960.With the exception of the title song, all the songs are remakes of songs Sinatra had previously recorded from the 1940s to the early '50s.It's breezy title song notwithstanding, Nice 'N' Easy actually is an album of romantic ballads of a decidedly ardent, even reflective feel.In short, the sort of material that Sinatra performed better than any other singer. The songs were arranged by Nelson Riddle.Sinatra fans should dig it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE CD
IN MY OPINION , THIS SINATRA OUTING IS A MUST HAVE . OLE BLUE EYES WAS AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME WITH THIS RECORDING IN THE SPRING OF 1960 . I READ THAT ORIGINALLY THIS ALL BALLARD ALBUM WAS TO BE TITLED ' THE NEARNESS OF YOU ' BUT THE DECISION WAS MADE TO TO REPLACE THE NEARNESS OF YOU WITH A SNAPPIER SONG , HENCE , ALONG CAME NICE N' EASY . DURING THE SESSION , ACCORDING TO CHARLES GRANADA , AUTHOR OF SESSIONS WITH SINATRA [ WHICH I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO SINATRA FANS ] FRANK WAS " PLAYFUL AND OCCASIONALLY BAWDY ". THE LISTENER CAN DETECT THIS ATTITUTE WHILE LISTENING TO NICE N' EASY . BUY IT , YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED .

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Sinatra's Masterful Yet Nice 'N' Easy Performances
This was the very first Frank Sinatra album I heard wayback in the '60s, and since then became a fan of his.I remember my parents used to listen to this album after dinner and danced to the tunes of "Embraceable You" and "Mam'selle." My sisters and I used to hang around and sing along and be captive audience to my parents dancing and listening to Frank Sinatra singing these romantic songs.

Editorial Review

Harry Connick Jr. has a rare gift for summoning the style of classic 1940s saloon singing, hinting at Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and especially Dick Haymes, without engaging in actual impersonation. What's more uncanny still is his songwriting, an idiomatic command of the standards that often summons some of the rhythmic ease of Gershwin, the tunefulness of Jerome Kern, and the wit of Cole Porter. Both his singing and songwriting talents are evident on this CD, recorded in 1990 when Connick was just 22. Its emphasis is squarely on the subject of love, both on the ballads and some harder swinging tunes, and Connick's voice shines on original songs and the standards "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" and Porter's "It's All Right with Me." Connick's voice and piano are ably supported by bassist Ben Wolfe, drummer Shannon Powell, and a string section, while there are some good jazz solos by regular associate Russell Malone on guitar and guest Branford Marsalis on tenor and soprano saxophones. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Connick's best!
I've had this album since 1992 at least and I think I've purchased 10 copies over that time.As Connick states, it's not truly an album of love songs, but each song is related to love.If you want love songs, check out "To See You"."We Are In Love" is an amazing compilation of songs that bring out the fun, desperation, and quirkiness of romance; as well as any other emotion that you can think of.Unlike some of his albums, this album will appeal to people that don't typically like jazz or big band. Many of the songs are great for singing along to and there's some excellent instrumentation on here as well.I've never loved the orchestration that Connick uses on many albums, and this album uses it sparingly. If you're not a big Connick fan, but you love fun music and music about love, this is your album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh face, old school
Harry Connick, Jr. is an absolute TREASURE!Throughout his long career (despite the fact that he is still relatively young), he has given us music and performances that are witty, soulful, stirring, and delightful. He embodies all that is good about music and style, being a virtual living encyclopedia of jazz, big band, pop, swing, soul, and lots of other tastes, blended in a spicy gumbo of Big Easy charm."We Are in Love" is one of my favorite Connick records because it's got all of the above.Harry mixes covers with original tunes into a seemless tapestry of sound and color. The title track is a beautifully phrased and written tour-de-force that would make Sinatra or Bennett proud. I also love "A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square" and "Recipe for Love." A special treat is the sax work of fellow New Orleanian Branford Marsalis.I love Michael Buble, but Harry is still the King of the Crooners!

4-0 out of 5 stars Why don't I listen to this one more often??
I, like most Connick fans, "discovered" him through hearing his music on the soundtrack to the Meg Ryan/Billy Crystal movie WHEN HARRY MET SALLY (ASIN B0000026V6). At the tender age of 20, I bought the CD to accompany it and loved it. I had the rare opportunity to judge these time-tested tunes with an unjaundiced ear of naivete: Grandma and Grandpa had some good tunes AFTER all. When his 2nd disc (this one) came out, I hurried to purchase it and was underwhelmed at the time outside of a couple tunes I felt were pretty catchy (Recipe for Love and It's Alright with Me). In all fairness it's difficult for ANY composer to stand alongside the likes of "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" or "It Had to Be You". As time went on, I discovered more of the big band era singers and performers' original versions and adjusted my estimation of the WHMS disc downward a bit (in comparison with folks like Sinatra, Crosby, and Cole...Nat, not Natalie).

Excellent! This woman has such a beautiful voice! Enjoy listening to hermany times over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Spectacular
I always think of "Simply Streisand" as the perfect album to play at cocktail parties. It's Barbra at her most sublime. Barbra Streisand's ninth solo album was appropriately titled "Simply Streisand" because the song selections, arrangements and Streisand's vocals were all conducted with such magnificent ease. After one powerhouse show-stopper after another, this was Barbra's first album of consistent tranquility since the atypical outing of "The Third Album" in 1964. It's my opinion that Streisand achieved greater success with this album. Her vocals had matured and she sounded as if she actually had been living out the scenarios on this meticulous choice of material -- more so than that of the 21 year-old on her earlier outing. After all, she was all of twenty-five by the time she recorded this album AND had become a Tony-nominated, Grammy and Emmy-winning television star with Oscar just on the horizon. Perhaps the fact the she was in the midst of filming "Funny Girl" had something to do with her confident performance. She was finally conquering the one medium she had dreamt of since she was a child -- and that was becoming a film star. Like most of Streisand's 60's albums, "Simply Streisand" was predominately music culled from Broadway.
4-0 out of 5 stars Barbra Streisand: Simply Streisand (1967)
In October of 1967, Barbra Streisand released her ninth album entitled, SIMPLY STREISAND. This album was not as great as Barbra's previous albums, but this album was more of an improvement of the JE M'APPELLE BARBRA album. I guess that there are not to many recognizable songs on here, except for "My Funny Valentine". But this album does receive four stars from me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful and enchanting... outstanding performance
Barbra Streisand puts her whole heart and soul in this CD. One is taken away as she sings "Somewhere," "Evergreen," and "Papa, Can You Hear Me?" I was deeply moved by the whole performance. Her voice touches deep within and brings you to a level of peace and serenity. So much passion is given to each song she sings.
4-0 out of 5 stars Sample of everything at which Streisand excells.
'One Voice' by Barbra Streisand is about the thirteen zillionth Streisand album I have bought, as I have been a fan of her singing since 1960, when the ver first album, 'The Barbra Streisand Album' was released and Rock and Roll was moribund, with Elvis in the Army, Buddy Holly recently deceased, and The Beatles an embryo performing in Hamburg.
4-0 out of 5 stars September 6, 1986 - a very special evening
After battling severe stage fright for the majority of the seventies and eighties, Barbra Streisand finally returned to the concert stage on September 6, 1986 for the "one night only" ONE VOICE concert. The show was heavily publicized in the media, tickets were sold at the astronomically high price of $5000 per couple, and columnists and critics everywhere were anxiously waiting to see if Streisand could overcome her immense performance-phobia and still deliver the goods.Fortunately, all of the hype was more than justified. When Streisand finally took the stage that night and opened the show with a tour de force performance of "Somewhere," every member of the audience was left in awe of the stunning power of this woman's ageless voice.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BARBRA STREISAND MUSICAL THEATRE ANTHOLOGY ( a compilation of theatre songs by Barbra Streisand)
Barbra Streisand has sung hundreds of Broadway and Musical Theatre songs, yet she has never issued an anthology of musical theatre songs.
4-0 out of 5 stars Barbra Streisand: The Second Barbra Streisand Album (1963)
In August of 1963, just six months after releasing her first album entitled, THE BARBRA STREISAND ALBUM, Barbra Streisand released her second album entitled, THE SECOND BARBRA STREISAND ALBUM. This album, for me, was the same as the first album, but there are songs featured that I do not mind, some that I really like, and so forth.
5-0 out of 5 stars Now, For My Second Act....
Barbra's studio work was becoming more polished as the sixties progressed and it seems to start with this album. My favorite track on this album, as I listen to it as a whole, is "My Coloring Book."I've always liked that song ever since I first heard it on the original "Greatest Hits" album. When I found this album on cd and played it in it's entirity I didn't realize "My Coloring Book" was the only pop recording surrounded by standards written by Harlod Arlen. Barbra tended to get hyperactive recording Arlen material for some reason but the Big Band treatment of "Lover, Come Back To Me" detracts from the depressing message of a love lost. Barbra's treatment of "When The Sun Comes Out" is regarded by many to be the definitive version and "Gotta Move" captures the sixties and the bongo craze that was happening in coffee houses in the early part of that decade. Barbra would revisit "Gotta Move for "Color Me Barbra" and somehow records an even more dramatic version with more strings. It was this second version that gets used in the motion picture "Too Wong Foo With Love, Julie Newmar.""I Stayed Too Long At The Fair" also gets revisited for the same t.v. special and resulting soundtrack, but this version is absolutely beautiful. It was around this time Barbra made a guest appearance on the "Judy Garland Show"and her career just exploded. All in all a teriffic album that would have done just as well titled "Barbra Sings Harlod Arlen." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tonight will not swing
Whoa, this is one outstanding CD and one of my favorites! This was one of Sinatra's best Reprise releases as he was still at his apex when it was recorded. The arrangements by Don Costa complement The Voice perfectly to create a perfect marriage. Sinatra was no stranger to melancholy tales of unrequited and lost love, such as "Spring Is Here" or "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry." Like those recordings, this release also features string accompaniment and a slow pace; in contrast, however, the mood here is hardly morose (for the most part). These are love songs, mostly sung directly to his lover. As such, this makes for the perfect CD to play during a romantic evening. The entire CD is exceptional from start to end, though highlights for me are, "Come Rain or Come Shine," "That's All" and the sensational "Prisoner of Love." The re-mastering has left these songs sounding flawless. As with most releases from this time period, however, the running time is only about thirty minutes. If your CD player supports repeated playing, this CD offers the perfect opportunity to use that feature. Buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars sinatra & strings
This is a great Sinatra release. Don Costa really pushed Frank on these songs, its very emotional and torch loving to say the least, This is a very underrated LP if you ask me. These early Reprise releases were classics that are somewhat ignored by the Caoitol releases of course, however dig deep folks there are tons of gems and diamond cuts on these Reprise releases. This one Don Costa arranged a beauty. Centeni!~
5-0 out of 5 stars SInatra's Sinatra
Frank Sinatra once said when asked that he thought he did best vocal work on the 1961 "Sinatra and Strings" album which teams him for the first time with legendary arranger/conductor Don Costa. It would be hard to disagree with his assessment after listening to this album of ballad masterpieces.By 1961 Frank Sinatra had been singing professionally for more than a quarter century and had mastered the art of singing the popular music ballad. The skills honed over the previous 25 years --immaculate phrasing, long, luscious notes and sheer vocal power -- are all evident in abundance in what may be the high water mark of his spectacular career. You simply will not hear better ballad singing than this. His renditions of "That's All", "I Hadn't Anyone Till You" and "Come Rain or Come Shine" are the highlights of the album and have not dimmed in brilliance nearly 45 years after they were recorded. This album is the gold standard by which all other ballad LPs/CDs should be judged. It's hard to imagine it will ever be topped. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great 60s title of Streisand!!
Color Me Barbra (1966) is one of Barbra's finest albums from the 60s. The song selections are fabulous and sound wonderful. I love the front cover crayon drawing image of her face; it goes so well on a pink background, the title of the album is also in different colors as well. I own this title on LP, tape, and CD. On the LP release, the song titles and such were in white print on the front cover, which made it hard for people to see what songs were on it. For those of you who probably still have this title on LP, you will still have to put the cover up in your face to read the white print (I assume that the 60s copies had light pink for the cover, and the reissue pressings from the 70s had a slightly darker pink on the front cover. With darker pink, the white print won't be difficult to read. I have an original copy from the 60s with the light pink front cover). White print on a light pink background is almost difficult to read; it's a nice color scheme, but almost invisible to see. I love the songs on this title. The opening track, Yesterdays is great to listen to, with its catchy orchestration. One Kiss is fine and quiet. Minute Waltz is fine, with Barbra sounding like she's trying to get this song sung in exactly one minute or less. Gotta Move is great, with its "hurry up" sound. Non C'est Rien, which I assume is a French counterpart of her Free Again song from her French titled "Je m'appelle Barbra" album, is great. Orchestration is the exact same as what is heard on Free Again. The track 7medley, is great to hear, and is the longest song on this album. C'est Si Bon (It's So Good), is another great one with Barbra singing in French. Where Am I Going? is a great one, as well. The closing track, Starting Here, Starting Now (the closing track) has a nice sound to it. Barbra really does a magnificent job of holding out that last note at the end of this song. She really does a good job of that. No Barbra Streisand music library would be complete without this "colorful" title!! Get it while you can!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Barbra Streisand: Color Me Barbra (1966)
In March of 1966, Barbra Streisand had released her seventh album entitled, COLOR ME BARBRA. This album was to coincide with her new hit television series of the same name. This is a great album and the front cover is just priceless, as well as being very colorful for your children.
5-0 out of 5 stars A 37-minute waltz
The soundtrack recording to Barbra's second smash television special continues the same mix of quirky humor ("Minute Waltz," the "Circus Medley") and soaring ballads ("When Or Where," the modest hit "Where Am I Going?") that won her millions of fans in the sixties. The Gold-selling album peaked at #3 and was even nominated for an Album of the Year Grammy.Another top-notch release, COLOR ME BARBRA continues on in the exceptional tradition of the two MY NAME IS BARBRA albums.Even though the songs were chosen and recorded to compliment and enhance the special's stunning visuals, the material makes transition from the television screen to the stereo with remarkable ease.As with all of Streisand's early albums, there is multitude of outstanding performances of great songs. In particular, the closing number "Starting Here, Starting Now" is one of the best performances of her long career.Definitely an essential disc in it's own right, but watch the fantastic television special as well - it's worth it! ... Billie Holiday (1917-59) wore gardenias, was a teenaged prostitute, did drugs, and died with a cop posted outside her hospital bed.But withher gravel-like vocals, and behind-the-beat phrasing, she was one ofthe greatest singers of the twentieth century. This multimedia collectioncommemorates her ninetieth birthday. Two CDs contain forty two of hergreatest hits, from her 1935 stint with Benny Goodman, to her chilling 1958strings album, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview of Her Recording Career
I agree with many of the others here that this is a great overview of Billie Holiday's recording career. There is not much to add to the comments about this marvelous collection, but I would like to add some observations and other information that Lady Day aficionados may find interesting.

If Columbia Records was trying to cash in quickly with this 1958 package before heartthrob Mathis's string ran out, the joke was--happily--on them, since it ended up staying on the Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Johnny's Greatest Hits - The First of The Greatest Hits Genre and Still One of The Best
Many people do not know that Johnny's Greatest Hits was the first album to be titled as such...
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonferful, wonderful!
In my opinion, ballad singers like Johnny Mathis are falling off the radar.Tt's probably a generational thing and it's a shame, because oh!that voice! It's arguably the best of the type, smooth and sweet.

Profoundly moving without being maudlin. A must have for any Sinatra fan over 45 years of age. Sit back and relax; Sinatra at his best!

5-0 out of 5 stars It isn't just for the ones who heard it in 1965
This will last forever. The years of Frank Sinatra have gone the way of the years of small town girls and soft summer nights - but they are equally worth remembering. To say Frank Sinatra was the greatest interperative artist in the history of music still doesn't get the point across. Francis Albert Sinatra was THE entertainer of all time. I like Bing, Ella, Tony Bennett, Billie Holliday, ect., and I do my very best (to no avail) to understand how certain people can enjoy listening to Elvis and the Beatles, but there simply is no equal in singing a song without artificial theatricals (Streisand), a belting, blaring lack of subtlety and taste(Bobby Darin) and plain-old boredom-inducing blandness(Andy Williams, anyone?).
