5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Rat Pack
Excellent compilation of Dean Martin hits.Dean Martin has a voice that stands alone without all the background of support and instrumentals.A nice album to relax with after the kids have been put to bed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Master Of Suave And The King Of Cool: Dean Martin
For more than 50 years the world has had the very great privilege of being entertained by the one and only Dean Martin. Fans of all ages have enjoyed Dean's undeniable charm and cool wit, and his place in American pop culture is undisputed. He was part of one of the most successful comedy teams ever, made numerous movies including comedies, dramas, and westerns, had a TV show that was highly rated and ran for almost two decades, performed live in concert to millions of adoring fans, and was a cornerstone of one of the most hip and talented group of men the world has ever seen, The Rat Pack! All that said, it was Dean's elegant voice and easy phrasing and style that was the common thread that ran through all of his many outstanding accomplishments.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is ESSENTIAL
I am a huge Mathis fan and this 2 cd set covers a good part of his career. It was nice to hear some live recordingd. It has been in my player non stop.

5-0 out of 5 stars When did I get old?
I have been listening to Johnnie Mathis for over 40 years. And, while I did "stray" from his music in my 30's, I have found that as the years go by, I am making my way back to him. This is an album that does exactly that: takes me back to his music that I know and love.Regardless of your mood, there is a song on this album for you. When I listen, certain songs bring back very, very fond memories, while others are used to create new ones in my life today. It's an album worth having.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding balladeer
Johnny was one of the most successful balladeers of the twentieth century although he does not get the recognition that he deserves for his achievements. This compilation includes most of the songs for which he is famous, together with a selection of other tracks that demonstrate his brilliance. Three British top ten hits (Someone, My love for you, I'm stone in love with you) are omitted but those seeking the definitive British hits collection should go for the earlier double CD, Very best of Johnny Mathis, which contains all his British hits, however minor. This set, compiled in America, offers a very different selection of songs although there is some duplication.

Culled from the Columbia Records reissue packages, variously released under the multivolume Quintessential Billie Holiday umbrella, this package goes straight for the love songs, the heart of Holiday. Ranging from such playful lyrics as "Let's Do It" and "Them There Eyes" to such essential Holiday as "You Go to My Head," "The Very Thought of You," and "Easy Living," this set is guaranteed to keep the home fires burning brightly. Lay this one on your lover next Valentine's Day. As was so frequently the case with Holiday, the ensemble support is impeccable, including many of the swingers from Columbia's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Billie Holiday Songs
There are so many fabulous reviews for this CD and I have to agree with them. I've been a Billie Holiday fan for years and own many discs of her music, but I find myself reaching for this one a lot. It's a great collection of songs and her voice is so sweet and true here. She's in top form and the arrangements on the songs are all excellent. Whoever put this CD together knew what they were doing. This is definitely Billie during the earlier part of her career and there's a real lightness to this music. (Her later music is great too, but very different.) Most of the songs on this CD are classics and even if you're unfamiliar with her, you'll probably still recognize many of them. There is some crackling background noise on some of the songs, since they were recorded back in the late thirties/early forties, though it's not that bad and most of the time you barely notice it. Some of the stand outs are "You Go To My Head", "The Very Thought of You", "Let's Do It", "The Way You Look Tonight", just to name a few. I think this would be a great introductory CD for someone who is curious about her and would like to hear some of her music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh, Billie!HOW DIVINE !!!
This CD is an excellent collection of great songs performed by the incomparable and legendary Billie Holiday. Billie could conquer any song--from the most vulgar to the most sublime with an electric performance that rivals the best singers of the 20th century.

Editorial Review

Commemorating the 40th anniversary of Nat King Cole's death in 1965, this compilation is the CD companion of an excellent DVD/documentary. Produced with the blessing of his estate, this disc is a thorough survey of his timeless genius--all recorded on the Capitol label. It captures his sumptuous and soothing tenor voice crooning on the pop tunes he made famous, like the ethereal "Nature Boy," the melancholy "Mona Lisa," and the bouncy "Straighten Up and Fly Right," and "Route 66." It also features Cole's often-overlooked skills as an Earl Hines-style pianist. "Quizas, Quizas, Quizas (Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps)," and "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup," attest to his international appeal, and see if you can keep a dry eye when you listen to Natalie Cole's posthumous, digitally-enhanced duet with her father on "Unforgettable." From strings to big bands, Nat King Cole is never out of style. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Man With The VelvetVoice
It's been around forty years since the passing of the legendary Mr. Nat King Cole. And even to this day his music lives on thorough his many fans some new and some old.Mr Cole was a extraordinary singer, piano player and a musical genius who had a natural feel for music. And to this day his influence and style is still having it's effect on the music world. And in this modern age I think only Luther Vandross came close to matching the magic and style of Nat King Cole. This ablum 'The World Of Nat King Cole' gives us some of his best vocal songs like 'When I Fall In Love,Too Young,Smile and A Blosson Fell'.That's just a taste of the Cole magic. And if you want more check out the unforgettable 'Unforgettable' one of Cole's best songs with it's wonderful lyrics. The way he sings 'Mona Lisa' really touchs the heart. The Velvet voice of Cole is at it's best on 'Nature Boy' with its philosophical overtures. And I just love the songs 'On The Street Where You Live' and 'I Love You(For Sentimental Reasons'.Beautiful songs for people in love.So just how popular is Mr. Cole's music today? Well a few years ago his daughter Natalie wanted to rejuvenate her career. She was smart enough to record a album of her fathers work titled 'Unforgettable'.Needles to say the album was a big hit for her.And it did wonders for her career.Yes,Mr.Nat King Cole the man with the velvet voice.Wonderful musical world just keeps turning and entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smooth
Nothing beats the smooth sound of Nat King Cole. Some songs I hadn't heard in years. Brought back a lot of good memories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trying Out the King? Start Here
If you're an avid Cole Collector, there's really nothing new here. However, if you're new to Nat King Cole's music, this is an excellant starting point. Not only are the Original versions of his influencial singles here (except Smile which is from his 1961 album "The Nat King Cole Story", and "Send For Me", which is a re-engineered version of the 1957 hit from the 1965 album "Looking Back")but there are also some gems from his LP releases as well, like On the Street Where You Live, from his "My Fair Lady" album, and "Let's Face the Music", from the '64 album of the same name. This album is pretty much a retread of the "Greatest Hits" package from 1994, and the "Capitol Collectors Series" from 1990, but with a few extra goodies. You've got a beautifully created booklet, with lots of rare photos of Nat with President Kennedy, Queen Elizabeth, and even relaxing at home with his kids.Good Stuff. Now, Capitol, where is the long awaited television documentary "The World Of Nat King Cole", that was supposed to accompany this CD?It has already aired in Great Britain, and is on DVD there. Why not here? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars May be the best pieces of music I have ever heard
Now I know that this album in particular has had really mixed reviews, and I know I may not be completely trusted in giving it five stars amidst many hideous reviews. However, I do believe music is subjectively reviewed, and my opinion may differ from others, so here it is.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is her best album so far.
There a many slow songs, but it's really soothing.I like drinking green tea and just listening to it.Whether I'm studying, driving, or listening to it at work, it also gets me in a good mood.Although I must admit that it took a while for me to fully appreciate it, this album is her best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Streisand keep the music playing on this great set
Of all of the many veteran pop singers who have been recording albums of standards during the first few years of the twenty-first century (Rod Stewart and Bette Midler come immediately to mind), Barbra Streisand's THE MOVIE ALBUM is the only one of the group that doesn't feel like a Vegas-like attempt to grab some quick sales. There are several reasons for this. For one, Streisand has been recording standards her entire career, even before her stint as successful pop vocalist in late-seventies.Also, instead of relying on the same worn-out tunes and tepid arrangements that plague most of the other similar releases of the last few years, Streisand has chosen a set of terrific, mostly unfamiliar material, rendered with a refreshingly tasteful production that is neither too slick nor too overdone.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good sampling
A most distinctive singer. His clear mellow voice combined with that Jamaican accent is a perfect vehicle to express the range of emotions contained in his Caribbean flavored songs. Then there are other songs, less exotic, but still delivered from the heart. There are dozens Harry Belafonte albums, but this onerepresents an accurate cross section of what the man is capable of. No regrets.

4-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best compilation of the man on one disc!
I used to own the original best of compilation of HB but I was not really satisfied as I thought it was pretty short and the sound quality leaves much to be desired and so when this one came out, I quickly grabbed it.
4-0 out of 5 stars I could listen to this all Day-O.
This is without a doubt his best single disc collection, and with a written history in the booklet. Obviously it's missing a few key songs, but at 22 tracks it's hard to complain. Most of his best songs are here, including "Land Of The Sea And Sun", "Jump In The Line", "Cocoanut Woman", "Jamaica Farewell", "Man Smart (Woman Smarter)", and his early favorite "Day-O". Plus there's the Christmas time classic "Mary's Boy Child". Of what's not here, I miss "Scratch, Scratch" the most. His slower songs are some of the best ever, but it's his more upbeat ones that are so fun to sing along with, regardless of whether you're 7, or 57. ... Read more

I love Cole Porter music.Could listen forever, However, this album sucks. When I bought it I thought it would be good. How bad could Frank Sinatra be?Well he's very bad and ruins Cole Porter's music. If anyone is considering buying this, please review it first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful album
I enjoy listening to this tremendously.Though not particularly a Sinatra fan, the album provides a good playlist of Porter tunes and Sinatra's interpretations. Some songs come from live performances and the screaming girls in the background distract to some extent.Nevertheless, it's a great collection of well known and not so well known Porter tunes.I especially love "Cherry Pie Oughta' be You" which isn't normally part of Porter retrospectives.Listening to this almost always elevates my mood.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS is how Cole Porter 's music SHOULD be sung
Well - I listened to the recently released "De-Lovely" soundtrack a couple of times and it left me empty so I went looking to fill my cup and found what I was looking for in my stack of cd's. If you REALLY want to hear Cole Porter's stunning music at it's very best get this cd. There is a reason why Frank Sinatra has 550 available items here in music at Amazon.com.You won't feel so empty after seeing the movie if you fill your soul with music from these tracks.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Esther Hoffman Howard Becomes Streisand Superman!
1977 - WOW!What a glorious and amazingly prolific year for Ms. Streisand it was.Coming off of the tremendous success of "A Star Is Born", both the film and its stupendously successful album, she blows everyone away with her follow-up endeavor ~ "Streisand Superman", an album that continues to build on her sure and strong grasp of contemporary "pop" which started with 1970's "Stoney End", continued with 1974's "The Way We Were" and "Butterfly", and advanced so magnificently with the aforementioned ASIB.Produced by Gary Klein, "Streisand Superman" was a major force in the year that saw the tremendous success of Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours", and Ronstadt's "Simple Dreams" (Gee, how wonderful and diverse pop music was back in the day when the like of all these three could chart in the top five in the same year!).The album opens with one of Streisand's most commanding & sexy recordings which should have been released as a single -"Superman", a grand, superbly sung ode to the strength and power of a "woman in love", continues with such deceptively simple and sensual performances such as "Baby Me Baby" (love the C&W twinge), "I Found You Love", "Answer Me", and the incredibly lyrical and moving "Love Comes From the Most Unexpected Places"."My Heart Belongs to Me" was a deserved major radio hit, and "Lullaby For Myself" speaks volumes on acting through singing, with a very telling lyric about the strengths and vulnerabilities of a woman who wants love in her life. However, the most majestic statement and powerful singing from Streisand just might be her definitive rendition of Joel's "New York State of Mind", which conjures up NYC in all its glory by a still little girl from Brooklyn (whether she wants to believe it or not!).This was the beginning of a new and different phase in Streisand's recording career, which would continue to astound with the commercial monsters of "You Don't Bring Me Flowers", "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)", and the commercially AND artistically successful "Guilty".
4-0 out of 5 stars Business goes on as usual for Barbra after A STAR IS BORN
By the mid-1970s, Barbra Streisand was truly a one-woman media blitz, having conquered television with her highly imaginative specials, Hollywood with films that were almost always guaranteed top grosses at the box office, and finally pop music with one finely-crafted LP after another. Sure, consistency was not always the order of the day with regards to the latter, but you could always count on an affair that was every inch approved by Barbra herself. If that was how she wanted to hear her music, there was no reason why her fans should not either. 1977's STREISAND SUPERMAN was another link in this unbreakable chain.
5-0 out of 5 stars The name of the album says it all... Barbra at the top of her game.
Streisand Superman is one of the best, there's no doubt about it.This album is one that many Streisand diehards argue as their favorite. While not mine personally, I must agree that this is one of the elite. It should also be noted that Streisand co-wrote some of the material on this record.

5-0 out of 5 stars Streisand in prime vocal condition
Barbra Streisand will forever be linked to the autobiographical Fanny Brice, a role she originally made her own on Broadway in 1964 and in London the following year; immortalised onscreen four years later (earning an Academy Award as well as countless other trophies). On the original soundtrack album, Ms Streisand is in prime vocal condition, though I do prefer her performance on the OBC album just a little bit more, for she is more brash and unkempt and far more vulnerable with her spin on Fanny. In the film, she is more confident and showman-like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ladies & Gentlemen - The Greatest Star
This is the first Barbra Streisand album that I had purchased. The experience of seeing the movie, Funny Girl, in September 1968, forever changed me. By the age of 10, I already had an innate sense of the popular music of the day. Being the youngest of three, I had been exposed to the Beach Boys, the Beatles and every pop song since I was born. But I had yet to experience complete awe and adulation for a singer -- that was until Funny Girl and Barbra Streisand. Not only had I never heard vocals so utterly astounding, I never experienced such an array of emotion from a singer. My virgin ears finally heard perfection and it was the first time I got those famous Streisand goose bumps that so many people had talked and written about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Barbra's best in the last couple of years!.
The music on this album is very unique especially tracks "Come Tomorrow", which has a oldies feel to it & "Without Your Love"which is mixture of Jazz & Pop. The style of course is very different then the recently past albums like "A Love Like Ours" & "The Movie Album", because this one is a Rock/Pop album like "Guilty". It's very cool & fun hearing Barbra change her style for this album. "Night Of My Life", I never heard her sing one like that before, which would be a very big hit if she released it in dance clubs or as a Maxi-Single.. It's a very good album & it's not boring like alot of people said about "A Love Like Ours" & "The Movie Album". This album is really hip & up to date. This is very rare of Barbra to do something like this, Barbra's new album is very worth it. I totally recommend this one to any Barbra fan that take chances.

Editorial Review

A harrowing classic, Billie Holiday's personal favorite among her '50s albums captures the singer 17 months before her death, her once honeyed voice, scarred and weakened from punishing life, its ravages highlighted by the 1958 session's crisp sonics and the contrasting "satin" of Ray Ellis' sleek string arrangements. Yet it is that very contrast that explains the power of these performances: In revisiting its torchy standards, Holiday reduces them to their core of pain and longing, transforming "I'm a Fool to Want You," "You Don't Know What Love Is," and "You've Changed" into naked declarations as mesmerizing and unsettling as a horrific accident.Any postrocker that presumes pop standards and string sections automatically translate to "easy listening" hasn't listened to this. This 1997 version adds unreleased takes and a beautiful 20-bit digital transfer to extract every shivering pang of Holiday's music. Read more

The first time I heard the distinctive timbre of Billie Holiday's immortal voice which somehow speaks to us from the deepest haunts of the soul, I believe I was somewhere in the vicinity of my mother's apron strings, and remember her remarking to the effect, "Now, that's a tragedy - she was so great . . .a mere shadow of what she was - terribly, terribly self-destructive", echoing the common sentiment.Lady Day was still alive at that time. And I remember the furl between the eyebrows of her original producer with Columbia, John Hammond Sr., when, some twenty years later, he recalled what is referred to on the copious liner notes of this awesome 1997 Sony reissue of the 1958 original as "the more lurid elements of the Billie Holiday saga".And since her death 17 months after this recording, the discussion has raged around that curious question: "Who was greater (or, in our abstracted experience of the media, unfortunately, "which"), the early Lady, or the later?"The early Billie - with her spectacular range, her unmatched phrasing, cadence, her youthful charm - adored by her sidemen and audiences alike - or the later - in her finest hour - on this recording - the heart-broken, broke, haggard, dispossessed junkie - in the words of her primary collaborator (by request) on this effort, Ray Ellis - " When we began recording and I heard the first playback, I was quite shook up.The quality of Billie's voice had really deteriorated. It was very noticeable to me after listening to all her early records".
5-0 out of 5 stars Satin Doll's Swan Song... It Was Never Her Voice But Her Swing
Heartfelt throughout..Sad,georgeous arrangements and tunes for Billie's last. The feeling of despair and the bad weather before the storm is felt on this her last offering.

Editorial Review

Plucked from the piano bars of New Orleans, Harry Connick Jr. was an unlikely choice to pen the soundtrack for a major Hollywood release. But everyone concerned hit the jackpot. As with the best of Connick's music, Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars How good this is depends on what you're looking for
If you're looking at this because you want the actual songs played in the movie WHEN HARRY MET SALLY, this ain't it. These are songs that were heard in the movie in renditions by New Orleans jazzer Harry Connick, Jr. (who was quite literally a 'young lion' at the time of this recording..just 21) rather than the cuts from Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra that were in the flick. [Connick DID sing "Don't get around much anymore" in the movie along with a medley of "It had to be you/Let's call the whole thing off/But not for me" (over the ending credits) but those are different versions than the ones heard here.] Connick's band DID provide much of the score with instrumental renderings of "Autumn in New York","Isn't it romantic?", "I could write a book", "The tables have turned". "Stomping at the Savoy", "But not for me", "Say it isn't so" and "Don't be that way".
5-0 out of 5 stars Must say, this best jazz vocal cd ever heard
Cannot complain about cd, it is one of favorites, in entire collection.Love jazz, so when heard soundtrack at friends house, asked if Sinatra, said no Harry Connick Jr.Then went to store bount immidiately.Never have stopped playing since, one of favorites.Connick have smokey voice, and great Thelonios Monk meeets swing style of piano playing.Connick has big band with unique arrangements, very swing but as same time very jazz.Ah so!!! Great cd!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Where are the original?
Harry Connick, Jr. did a fair job representing the musical legends that were found in the movie, but nonetheless, this soundtrack should contain the artists who created the songs and/or who were featured in the motion picture. If you are purchasing this CD because you enjoy the classics performed by musical legends, as I do, then I do not recommend this CD; instead I would buy the originals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars back to broadway
WHEN YOU READ THE PLAYLIST IT'S ALL BROADWAY STANDARDS THAT HAVE DONE OVER AND OVER, BUT WHEN BARBRA TAKES A SONG SHE MAKES IT HER OWN.IT'S LIKE HEARING THEM FOR THE FIRST TIME BECAUSE SHE PUTS A NEW TWIST ON THEM. THIS IS DONE IN THE STYLE OF HER EARLY ALBUMS, HER LATER ALBUMS ARE MORE MELLOW.THIS IS ONE OF HER BEST

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Barbra album
I love all the songs.I like her best singing Broadway music along side huge orchestras. It feels like you're watching her on stage singing to you.I know a lot of people my age don't listen to Barbra Streisand... I do and I think she has a beautiful voice. My favorites are "Everybody Says Don't", "Luck Be A Lady" and "With One Look."Highly reccomended to any Broadway/Barbra Streisand fan. A+

5-0 out of 5 stars Barbra Streisand: Back To Broadway (1993)
In June of 1993, Barbra released her thirty-third album entitled, BACK TO BROADWAY. Barbra had alread released a Broadway album in 1985, which was simply titled, THE BROADWAY ALBUM. But Barbra wanted a follow-up, featuring more songs from the Broadway hits. This album is just as amazing as the first Broadway album.
