Pop this on, close your eyes, and you'll be instantly transported back to the Vegas of 1966. The Sands Hotel was still the "class joint" where Sinatra and his Rat Pack buddies partied, held court, and occasionally even performed. This priceless document (Sinatra's first official live album) captures the Chairman of the Board in performance mode, ably supported by conductor-arranger Quincy Jones and Count Basie and his Orchestra. The set list comprises 16 Sinatra classics--including "Come Fly with Me," "One for My Baby (And One More for the Road)," "It Was a Very Good Year," and "Angel Eyes"--along with two Basie instrumentals and some seriously un-P.C. stage banter. Essential. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "My body may be 50, but I'm 28!!!"
Frank Sinatra, as you might expect, gives a flawless performance recorded here at The Sands Hotel in Las Vegas in early 1966. He is ably backed up by none other than the great Count Basie and his band. The effect on the audience is unmistakable: they love the chairman, they love Basie's music; and they can't get enough and cry out for more when the act is drawing to a close.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sinatra at his best
I bought this as a gift for a drummer I work with. He has trouble with his swing feel, especially west coast style. This recording features the Basie band. No one swings like Basie. Great CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sinatra
This is probably the best Sinatra's show, where we can feel how he was the top entertainer in usa. You can almost feel his fisical presence. The sound is great, you have the notion that you are in Las Vegas!! The surround enviroment of the show is all there, you can even hear the dinner plates been picked up from the tables! You are in Vegas. ... Read more

This is one of the three all-ballad albums that John Coltrane recorded in late 1962 and early 1963. Johnny Hartman was apparently Coltrane's suggestion, and his deep, dark voice meshes perfectly here with Coltrane's tenor. The material is well-chosen, including definitive readings of "My One and Only Love" and "Lush Life." McCoy Tyner fills out the chords, augmenting the harmonies and keeping the tone of these ballads respectful but not overly sentimental. All the players get to the deep structure of the songs and are not afraid to play in the most essential and elegant manner. This is beautiful jazz. Read more

Andrew LloydWebber'sadaptation of T.S. Eliot's poems may not have become Broadway's longest-runningmusical without the original cast to begin the raves. Which is why every aficionado ofthis theatrical classic will tell you that this is the one you have to own (although they'llprobably tell you that you need the import Original London Cast album as well, the show having originated on London's West End and all). But this is the one with BettyBuckley singing "Memory"--the song that turned her into a star--and the two discs areappropriate for the musical that helped set off Broadway's "operatic" phase. The show isnow also available--in its entirety--as a home video, but the music still stands on its own, though some cynics have wondered why so much music only produced one hit standard.Read more

Band leader and lounge kingpin Louis Prima will be best be known for the classic, "Just a Gigolo," immortalized by David Lee Roth for a whole new generation of swingers. But Prima's output went much further: in his day he recorded for Capitol, acted in a movie or two, even owned a golf course. Prima's genius is infectious: lounge, swing, and Dixieland all fuse together into medleys that are fun, dance-worthy, and upbeat. Prima's duets with Keely Smith are the obvious highlights here: "That Ol' Black Magic," "Hey Boy! Hey Girl!," and "I've Got You Under My Skin" are essential Prima tracks. Sure, the cheese factor occasionally runs high, but it is a fun trip. --Read more

Having long been unfairly dismissed as an ingenious Sinatra impersonator in some critical quarters, it's easy to see why Harry Connick, Jr., has been reluctant to record the sort of pop standards cover album that's become the career refuge of rock artists as diverse as Bryan Ferry and Rod Stewart. But that's exactly what the New Orleans pop revivalist has done here on a slate of familiar chestnuts from the 1950s and '60s. But there's a notable conflict at work between Connick the arranger/conductor and Harry the pop crooner. The former seems eager to infuse his charts with the sort of restless, reinventive musicality he's displayed on recent works as diverse as the stage foray Read more

The years 1975-1988 contained big successes for Barbra Streisand, though she ran through an unsteady gauntlet of disco-fied pop and pseudo-Broadway show stoppers. This collection, originally released in 1989, brings together the hits of those years--like the two Barry Gibb duets, "What Kind of Fool" and "Guilty"--in a range of production scenarios utilizing the talents of Rupert Holmes, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Phil Ramone, Dave Gruisin, and others. The two new recordings added to begin and end the package, "We're Not Makin' Love Anymore" and "Somewhere," serve as bookends of the dance and ballad style Streisand revolved around throughout her later career. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Dino Christmas CD to own
I own just about every Dino/Rat Pack Christmas album they have, and I think this is the best Dean one to get. The sound quality is great, it has all the songs in one place (plus alternate versions), quotes in the liner notes, and the picture on the cover and the one inside aren't too bad, either ;) .

5-0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic masterpiece!
Whenever I think about Christmas, I inevitably began to recollect of my childhood and the fond Christmas memories that go along with it.This album, along with those by Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Andy Williams takes me back to those simple days when Christmas meant family and waking mom and dad up at 5AM to see if Santa came yet. It's like the smell of chlorine at the swimming pool every summer....it's simply memory evoking..i love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars As it had to be done...
For years, I wondered, why there was no real Holiday album by Dean Martin: The answer is that simple: Dino cut two Christmas albums, one for Capitol and one for Reprise, but each of them contained only a bunch of Christmas-related selections. So, if you really want to get a Holiday album by DM, get this one!

3-0 out of 5 stars The popular tracks
Many greatest hits compilations by current bands are worthwhile because they owed their success to radio and their best work was released to radio. "Greatest hits" does not always equate with "best of" and this compilation is an excellent example of that. Many of these songs I truly enjoy. Do many songs better than "What A Wonderful World" exist? The man owns "Hello Dolly" and "Mack the Knife," and "La Vie en Rose" is a timeless, beautiful song. However, it is difficult to fathom songs such as "Skokiaan," "The Dummy Song" and "Chloe" were ever hits. They aren't especially good songs and I assume MCA included them because they lacked rights to better material. I agree with the reviewers, who have directed readers to other Satchmo releases. In addition to those recommendations, the one I would suggest is the "Jazz `Round Midnight" series release, simply titled "Louis Armstrong." "All-Time Greatest Hits" isn't a terrible CD, though it does not give a non-fan an idea of just how great some of Mr. Armstrong's music is.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!
This cd has all my favorites! I love Louis, and all his cheesy, but happy songs. It's good car music, and backround music for when your working or eating. I LOVE IT!

3-0 out of 5 stars Cookie Cutter Commercial
I have not listened to this CD. I must agree with another reviewer that Satchel Mouth is one of our lasting cultural icons. There's no need to talk about his-- I was about to say "mastery of the music," but it's more about soul than mastery. The music was just there. My comments have to do with the music selection. These cuts are his greatest hits all right, they're pleasant and enjoyable etc. They are AM Radio Hits on a Disc! If you love Louis' music, I encourage you to call up "Ambassador Satch" and listen to a few of those cuts, too. That music or his "W.C. Handy" disc and some others tell the tale of his music better than Mack the Knife, much as I--and you, no doubt--enjoy it. Give them a spin and enjoy the real roots of Louis. Even the re-mastered "Original Hot Five" and "Hot Seven" discs--cut in the 20s--are great. You might like these "not for everybody" less commercial discs even better! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dean Martin The Best Of Cassette Tape

5-0 out of 5 stars Great to learn what Dean Martin is all about.
This CD consists of Dean Martin's best songs and is a very good way to learn what Dino is all about. Listen to "That's Amore", "Volare" and my personal favorite "Sway", and my prediction is that you will fall in love with Dean (Dean's voice). For old time fans, I would recommend you to buy the multi-CD or more complete version (more songs) like "The Essential Dean Martin" or "That's Amore" etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Memories are made of this".
This seems to be a budget collection of sorts, but as far as song selection goes, all the big ones are on here. It's roughly the same as his other "hits" discs. "That's Amore", "Return to Me", and "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You" are all on here, as well as nine others. The first half of this is classic Dean. It's such a refreshing thing to put on after listening to alot of the junk on the radio. I would say if there's one thing you need with your next martini, it's this cd. It will go great with your "Frank" and "Tony" cd's too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Music and story
It's a very beautiful story about love and about will-power based on "Yentl. The yeshiva boy" by Issac Bashevis Singer. The music by Michel Legrand and marvelous voice of Barbra Streisand it's the best recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yentl Soundtrack
I had almost forgotten how much I loved this music and Barbra Streisand's passionate singing until I visited the city of Monrreal recently and saw a French language version of Yentl on television.I was inspired by seeing that to order the CD (I already owned the soundtrack on vinyl but no longer had a way of listening to it) and once again discovered how glorious it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
It's rare that the music from a show can stay with a listener for years, but as so many other reviewers attested to, this one does. Yentl is a gorgeous story - see the film! - and surprisingly, one of the last great musical films of the 20th Century. It's amazing to me that no one remarked that this was a musical, because that's how I was first introduced to it. And yet, the music and Streisand's heartfelt delivery go beyond the usual trappings of the musical genre. This is such emotional stuff, spiritual stuff, enlightening, passionate, thought-provoking, meaningful material. It is so well done, and you don't have to be a Streisand fan to marvel at her brilliance on this project. Truly, a work of art! It moved me in the 80s, and it STILL moves me today. Truly enduring and exquisite entertainment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Barbra's best selling albums....
This album of Barbra Streisand, Greatest Hits, Volume 2 contains ten of her well known songs from 1970-1978. The title starts off with her timeless classic "Evergreen", from "A Star is Born", and ends with "Stoney End", from the album of the same title from 1971. There are some other great songs on this album as well. Here is a brief summary of the rest of them:
5-0 out of 5 stars Barbra Streisand: Barbra Streisand's Greatest Hits Volume 2 (1978)
In November of 1978, Barbra Streisand released her twenty-fourth album entitled, BARBRA STREISAND'S GREATEST HITS VOLUME 2. This album features all of Barbra's greatest hits from 1971 to 1978, and only the best songs were chosen. Just look on below.
3-0 out of 5 stars So-so hits package, now eclipsed by other collections
For those enraptured with "Evergreen" and "The Way We Were", and who can't find the other Streisand best-of's, I would say go ahead and get this quickie collection, but don't let your Streisand shopping end here. "Superman" is a pretty but thin, head-scratching non-hit('My sweet life/has just begun/I'm in love this time and I know I have it/Fell into my life so I grabbed it/There's nothing I can do/When I'm with you'); I don't know what the song is about, or why a free-spirited, independent woman like Barbra needs a Superman to feel "easy"(must've been that Jon Peters influence). The live "Sweet Inspiration-Where You Lead" is overlong and spottily recorded. "Songbird" and "My Heart Belongs To Me"(a female-empowerment number)are both lovely but sorta bland. "Stoney End"-from 1970!-doesn't have the same smooth production and orchestration like the other songs and sticks out a bit. The strangest and rarest track here is "Prisoner"(from the inferior movie 'Eyes of Laura Mars'), a tepid Top 20 rock song that features a strong Streisand vocal but forgettable lyrics. ... Read more

Long considered a jewel in Verve Records' very impressive crown, Fitzgerald's songbook collections of various composers--a series that was started by the success of this set--are all wonderful, but her natural wit and intelligence was at its most perfect with Cole Porter's erudite, urbane songs. While not as scat-oriented as her small group outings, these Porter sets offer her most realized pop performances. Also, the gold remastering does a fine job of bringing out the nuances in the arrangements, making this a treasure for the serious collector and the casual listener alike. A true American music gem. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Tony Bennett - The Art of Romance - Maybe
The usual excellence from Mr. Bennett, BUT don't let the title lull you into thinking that this would be perfect for a fireside romantic moment. There quite a few songs here about broken romances and the sadness thereof. I would suggest "Perfectly Frank" as the best Tony Bennett album for romance. On a 1 to 5 scale, it's a 10! 4-0 out of 5 stars Better to wait for PAJAMA GAME to get a separate release
The Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of this 1954 musical sold-out every performance thanks to stellar reviews and the Broadway musical debut of Harry Connick Jr. He and co-star Kelli O'Hara add sparkle to this classic, and Connick's jazz piano riffs on "Hernando's Hideaway" are alone worth the price of the two-disc set.
4-0 out of 5 stars A fun cast album with a little bonus
I think Harry Connick Jr. attracted most people to this show and this CD. I was one of the few who bought it for Kelli O'Hara. I first became a fan of O'Hara's silverly soprano on the Light in the Piazza OBC, and the OOBC of My Life With Albertine. In The Pajama Game she takes on a new kind of role- a belty Babe Williams.I was never particularly attracted to the Pajama Game as a musical but I wanted to see what O'Hara did with it.

Curb Records has long specialized in low-budget repackagings of previously released material, and they certainly haven't gone out of their way with this 12-song Dean Martin compilation. Culled from his Capitol years, this does indeed feature some great moments--"That's Amore," "Volare," "Inamorata" and "Come Back to Sorrento" are all present and accounted for--and if you need a little Dino to spruce up a mix tape, this'll certainly do ya. 4-0 out of 5 stars A solid Dino CD despite a disappointment here and there
I've owned this CD for over eight years now so I guess it's about time I reviewed it for Amazon. I have never let this one gather dust at the back of some shoe box in a closet somewhere. Indeed, just the opposite is true--whenever I feel anxious and just want some soothing, beautiful music to listen to in order to calm down I grab this CD and pop it into my CD player.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dean Martin
I bought this CD because of "Sway", but after hearing the rest of the selection, I can't decide which one is my favorite hits. This is the BEST CD in my jukebox.I never get tired of listening to Dean Martin. This is one of his best collections of greatest hits. Even my 9-mo. grandaughter will only go to sleep listening tom "Sway". ... Read more

It'd be hard to imagine a happier wish than the one this jazz vocal legend offers her listeners on this urbane-yet-homey collection of holiday favorites. The First Lady of Song recorded these tunes in 1960, at the peak of her interpretive powers. As such, she puts her singular stamp on everything from a sultry vamp like "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" to the sweet and cozy "The Christmas Song." Even potentially shopworn standards like "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" sound fresher when they're coming from Ella Fitzgerald. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ella Swings Through Christams And Takes You Along For The Ride
Ella is once again in great form for this set of Holiday tunes.Norman Granz, her long-time manager definitely knew what he was doing pairing Ella's outstanding vocals with great orchestrations of some very well known Christmas songs. The result was a hit from the get-go!
5-0 out of 5 stars Ella Swings With Santa and Friends
Ella is perfection. This pairing of Ella and Christmas is beyond wonderful! My parents had one of those old compilation Christmas albums from the 70's (you know, the kind you could get really cheap at hardware and tire stores around the holidays)and it had Ella's version of Sleigh Ride on it. That was my first introduction to Ella. I was hooked, and I've become a life-long fan.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Merriest
The swinging-est, happiest, merriest of all -- and I do mean all -- Christmas albums! Most remarkable is what Ella does to the traditional more solemn classics, such as "white Christmas", "The Christmas Song" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." She ups the tempo "just so" and adds just the right several ounces of jazz touch to make them upbeat and elegantly swinging. The other songs are fast swing epics. This album together with the "Rat Pack Christmas" are all you need for the season! ... Read more

New Orleans pianist, singer, and songwriter Harry Connick Jr. has done what many makers of Christmas records strive for but seldom achieve: he's made a Christmas record that sounds convincingly like a '40s period piece and rigorously like a cool, contemporary jazz disc. His powerful, self-written Christmas songs sound like polished standards, and he delivers the whole package with a sassy, vocal economy (with the occasional New Orleans accent) and an orchestral richness that is never indulgent or overwhelming. 4-0 out of 5 stars You can do a lot worse
This is definitely not the best Christmas album money can buy.But if you are (like me) a sucker for the old jazz, big band-style Christmas crooning of yester-year, then this is definitely for you.Connick is always compared to Frank Sinatra, and that's probably how he prefers it.But on this CD he sings several songs as if they were his very own (and a couple of them are, in fact). My personal favorites on here are "O Holy Night" (what Christmas album would be complete without that one?), "Sleigh Ride," and "When My Heart Finds Christmas."I am also curious to hear his more recent Christmas release.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Great Christmas CD Has Variety
This is a way-above average Christmas CD with the songs everyone knows. They are sung very well by Connick in this disc. They are very nice, and a perfect mood-setter.Everyone ought to be happy with this Christmas album. It's not too serious, yet he sings it well. The style changes with each song, but it is never too overwrought. He sings the whole disc very well. There are enough changes to occupy all listeners. He sings it well and it sounds good like it should. It has a little jazz, a little rock'n'roll, and a little classical, and it never seems bothersome and overdone. He sings it without too much overbloatedness like Whitney Houston, and without the overemphasis of Mariah Carey. This CD is elegant and unique in design.

4-0 out of 5 stars Big band, big chorus, big sound.
A different sort of Christmas album, Harry Connick's CD features the big band sound, strong drums throughout, large choruses in many songs--and Harry Connick. With toe-tapping rhythms and a casual, relaxed attitude prevailing, Connick presents many swingy versions of traditional songs and a number of quiet, soft ballads, accompanied by strings and chorales.Subtlety is not part of the pattern here--the music is, for the most part, bold, celebratory, and full of spirit--with the drums setting the beat and emphasizing the rhythms. The romance of the ballads is emphasized by violins and female choruses.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
Since I don't want to sound like a broken record (how's that for a phrase made obsolescent by the advent of compact disks?) and repeat the superlatives stated by others, I'll keep this brief. This is by far my favorite CD I own. This music is so sensational, just too marvelous for words. If you are not a fan or all you are familiar with is either the latter-year material when his voice started to go or the early years before he developed his trademark style and sound, do yourself a favor and pick up this collection. His voice was in peak form, the arrangements are stellar and the selection is unsurpassable. The Voice recorded more than 1,500 songs, many of them multiple times, so this seventy-five song set is anything but comprehensive. However, it is an excellent choice if you don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to purchase the individual studio recordings. His recordings of standards here are not only the best versions he himself recorded, they are the best versions recorded by anyone. The sound quality is also superb, which is not surprising given the fact that, by the time of these recordings, Sinatra had already been using nothing but the best studio equipment for years. Your life is not complete without Frank Sinatra.

5-0 out of 5 stars a Ring a Ding Ding
I thoroughly enjoy this collection. It really ranges from the more mellow side of Frank to the the swinging songster that we all love. The audio quality is superb, and really shines on a high performance sound system. I also love the commentary booklet that comes with it. The stories and pictures from his Rat Pack buddies are fabulous. It comes through as a total package that's well put together. Well worth the money for a piece of music history that will never fade.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best years of Sinatra's singing career...
Frank Sinatra, The Capitol Years is the most wonderful compilation of songs from an incomparable era in the career of Frank Sinatra. His choice of music, the arrangements, his voice, style and delivery are all second to none. The ballads in particular are sweet and soulful; you get the feeling Frank meant every word. A "must have" for Sinatra lovers or anyone who loves great music. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Please Stop
This has to be one of the worst productions in the history of music.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another great for Barry and Barbra
I am, of course, a huge BeeGees fan as well as Barbra Streisand. This latest work is fantastic, and it displays the prolific song writing talent of Barry Gibb. Their voices blend together so perfectly, it is truly a pleasure!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic
words like "superb" , "fantastic", "gorgeous" and so on appear to be such weak terms to describe it. it is an album we have been waiting from barbra and barry for the past two decades and they did not disappoint us at all. It is a big catch. I do recommend it to all music lovers and i hope all of them ill get the essence of its music and the deep concepts inherent in the words. One of the most important features of the album which makes it quite outstanding is the fact that although there are more than 5 different styles throughout the album, it does not lose its integrity and uniqueness. ...
