3-0 out of 5 stars "Handydandy" doesn't get it.
Tom B "handydandy"missed the point entirely when he wrote his review in 2003.Listen to "I Should Care", the man is sad and he is probably looking out the window as he sings thinking of what was, could have been, but alas, wasn't meant to be.By the way Boz is not one of my favorites and I must commend him for this track at least.

3-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Down on the percussions
Concerning one reviewer who mentioned about shooting the drummer. Better alternative is probably to find a different studio. One reviewer mentions the drummer being one of the best from the Bay area. Well, the results don't show it! I agree with other reviewers who complain about this aspect of the recording. Anybody suggesting otherwise should listen to better jazz recordings and pay close attention to percussions.

Editorial Review

Released close to a decade after her death at 43, this live CD testifies to what made Nancy LaMott special to many cabaret lovers. The singer had a gentle, homespun manner rather different from the urban sophistication one so often associates with the classic American songbook. She sounded as if she didn't have a vindictive bone in her body and enjoyed the true worth of life's most basic pleasures with sincere optimism--no wonder she offers here a cleancut of Berlin's "I Got the Sun in the Morning." Backed by a discreet trio, LaMott is at her understated best on the more melancholy numbers, such as Rodgers and Hart's "I Didn't Know What Time It Was." The recording, which documents an entire show, banter included, also shows that LaMott was ahead of the game in the way she seamlessly mixed standards with modern pop (tracks by Rupert Holmes, Antonio Carlos Jobim and James Taylor). An inspiring performance considering Miss Lamont died a few weeks after this performance. Wonderful piece.Stands on it's own merit.

Actually, I wasn't there, my wife was, so when she gets a chance, I'll have her write a review. She's told me so much about this concert, she'll be thrilled to know I'm ordering it for her.She said it was simply the best concert she's been to in her life. So if the reviewers are right that the recording quality and live environment on this album are superior, then this will be a hell of an album. And my wife was well aware at the time that Nancy was dying. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars At list price, overpriced. At the club price, a good value.
At the time of this writing, there is an option to buy this Deluxe Edition at the "club price" of $7.99. I happen to own the club edition, and I never bought the original CD, so I didn't end up buying most of the music twice.
3-0 out of 5 stars It is not Jazz
It is a nice peice of work, but it is more country music than jazz. However, I liked the DVD very much. I removed two stars because I expected to listen to jazz, not country.

5-0 out of 5 stars Norah's better than ever in "Feels Like Home"!
I LOVED "Come away with me" and was nervous about Norah's sophomore album.Would it be as good?Turns out I liked it even better than the first.Tunes are catchy and slightly more upbeat than the first album.Added bonus tracks are good too.I love Moon Song and Sleepless nights.Would HIGHLY recommend it! ... Editorial Review

Peter Allen was an Australian gay man who was once married to Liza Minnelli and was still officially in the closet when he died of AIDS in 1992. It's obvious that when it comes to sheer drama, Allen's life is pretty hard to beat, and Hugh Jackman's portrayal in this bio-show terrifically brings home the music man's energy and inner contradictions. Too bad his life's intensity wasn't reflected in Allen's milquetoast songs, which are generously sprinkled throughout the show. Technically, Jackman's not the best singer (Brian Stokes Mitchell continues to rule Broadway in that regard), but his charisma is undeniable. His take on "I Go to Rio" is appropriately high octane, for instance, while "I Still Call Australia Home" (Oz's unofficial anthem) is rather poignant. As Judy and Liza, respectively, Isabel Keating and Stephanie J. Block try hard to emulate their models' vocal styles, which can be really distracting. Overall, though, this album is mostly for serious fans of either Allen and Jackman. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great collection of catchy tunes!
I admit to knowing nothing of Peter Allen.I purchased this CD because I'm an admirer of Hugh Jackman and had seen the "Oklahoma!" DVD (also available here at Amazon, and the best production of "Oklahoma!" I have ever seen).I was impressed with the nice liner notes and the fact that they include a synopsis of the plot so you can follow along and know what is going on with each song. Also, all the song lyrics are included as well as some photos from the stage production.Jackman is in excellent voice for this and the female leads who play Judy Garland and Liza Minelli are also fine singers.Whether you enjoy Peter Allen or not, you will enjoy this CD.
3-0 out of 5 stars Dazzling Performances
While clearly, this is not the greatest of musicals and it doesn't pretend to be, it is an oppurtunity to hear several incredible, powerhouse performances. Yes, Hugh Jackman is amazing as Peter Allen, without trying to copy him at all. But, the other performers keep up with him. Isabell Keating is unbelievable as Judy Garland. She DOES copy Garland, in singing, mannerisms and looksand she is wonderful. Jarod Emmick, as always, is fantastic. One of the best voices on Broadway.

5-0 out of 5 stars SIMPLY TERRIFIC!
My original copy of this album was a cassette, which I managed to wear out. This remains one of my favorite CDs and I am the proud owner of over 700 CDs!I have purchased all of Ms. Olivor's CDs but Stay the Night is definitely the best!Every song is great! Her voice is spectacular--I could listen for hours! It would be wonderful to hear more from Jane Olivor!

5-0 out of 5 stars How Could I Have Forgotten How Fabulous Jane Is?
Seeing Clay Aiken, of all people, try to sing Neil Sedaka's "Solitaire" on Jay Leno took me to my 25 year old vinyl edition of "Stay The Night." Even scratchy, Jane is many heads over heels better than Mr. Aiken.I've now replaced the vinyl with CDs, and Jane Olivor is as incrediible as ever.Jane's "Stay The Night," "First Night,""Chasing Rainbows" and "The Best Side of Goodbye" are must have CDs: brilliant, powerful and superbly nuanced vocals!Thank you Clay for reminding me about Jane!

5-0 out of 5 stars SENSATIONAL
Just saw Jane at The Berkley Performance Center in Boston on Saturday night and she is just as fine a performer as she was when I first saw her back in the 70's.Want to know if anyone knos anything about her.I have followed her for years....seen her probably 7 times.....have all her CD's....know she lives in Ca. but other than that know nothing. 4-0 out of 5 stars Not quite the best, but pretty good...
Flanders and Swann were brilliant, witty songwriters who wrote acute but subtle satire (among other things). In spite of the title, this record is not a "Best Of" collection, but a repackaging of their two best-known albums, "At the Drop of a Hat" and "At the Drop of Another Hat."A lot of people don't realize that there were two recordings of "At the Drop of a Hat": the first, produced by George Martin for Parlophone, was recorded during its original run at the Fortune Theatre in London in the late '50s, and is much better than the Angel Records version recorded on Broadway. This reissue, unfortunately, uses the Broadway version, in which Flanders seems a little bored with the material (or perhaps unsure that the American audience will get some of the jokes) and tends to rush the punch lines. This collection also omits one of the best songs from "At the Drop of a Hat"(which certainly belongs on any CD with this title), the conscientious-objection allegory "The Reluctant Cannibal."
5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful!
This live recording of some of the best loved Flanders and Swann songs is truly a transport of delight!

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and very English songs
Michael Flanders and Donald Swan composed and sang their own amusing songs, accompanied by Donald Swan playing the piano. Flanders was a large man in a wheelchair and Swan a slight man. Good natured, somewhat dry, very English lyrics, and somewhat dated as they werepopular in the 1950s and 1960s. They did wonderful stage shows in those simpler times. ... Read more

The late Peter Allen became an international pop icon of many a disparate part: evocative tunesmith of such unabashed sentimental pop as "Don't Cry Out Loud" and "I Honestly Love" you (both original versions of which are included here); vigorous stage performer who willfully blurred the line between mere flamboyance and outright camp; the original ex-Mr. Liza Minnelli; one of the first celebrities to openly admit their homosexuality. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite the quality that I expected
I have been wanting a Charles Aznavour collection CD for a while and thought that this would be it. I was particularly interseted in some key songs of his, such as L'amour cest comme un jour, which is not the original version I have on an old vinyl. This was particularly dissapointing. Overall the quality of the recording lacks the bass (tone) I associate with versions of Aznavour I have heard on older vinyl recordings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great music
I love Aznavour - this is its real deal. I have bought other Aznavour but this one is his original music in French. And it has its best songs

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you could want from an Aznavour collection.
In French, that is.This doesn't include any of the English-language versions of his classics, but is otherwise an excellent overview of his 40+ year career. And even though my French is entry-level at best, I prefer to hear Aznavour in his native tongue. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
These recordings date from 1964 to 1971.During this time period, there were two kinds of "pop" music. There was the kind for teenagers, which featured the likes of the Beatles, the Doors and the Strawberry Alarm Clock. And then there was pop music for the parents of teenagers, featuring the likes of Julie London, the Letterman and the Hollyridge Strings. This CD features teenage pop songs as performed by pop artists for the older folks.Boy, talk about a style clash! Can you imagine Mel Torme singing "Sunshine Superman", or Julie London singing "Mighty Quinn"?Well, you don't have to imagine it, you can get this CD and hear it for yourself. There are some strange renditions of songs that will be familiar to anyone who ever turned on an oldies radio station. Most of the songs are instumentals, although I wouldn't call it "elevator music", for the most part.I have to make special mention of the orchestral version of "Heartbreak Hotel", which is downright spooky!Fans of "kitsch" should dig this CD.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Veritable Smorgasbord of Bad Taste--and that's the idea!
The 1960s was the most tumultuous decade of the 20th Century. There were a great many events to commend it and condemn it. It produced the Apollo space program to put American astronauts on the Moon and some of the best original popular music as just two commendable events. Assassinations and the divisive Vietnam War were events certainly to condemn the sixties.5-0 out of 5 stars A New Level Of Kitsch
Mel Torme singing 'Sunshine Superman'? Julie London warbling 'Quinn, The Eskimo'? Exotica Supremo Martin Denny taking on 'Incense & Peppermints'? No, you haven't gone insane, you're just listening to the ultimate curveball CD from 'Ultra-Lounge' This may be one of the most mind-warping albums I have ever heard; extremly tasteless and misguided takes on your favorite 60's pop hits by desperate loungeurs trying to be 'relevant' to 'the kids'. They miss the boat entirely, but the result is this strange hybrid; not quite lounge music, not quite rock, not really muzak...but it is (in the words of The Firesign Theatre) 'weirdly cool' . On first listening I didn't know WHAT I was hearing, but this disc has become strangely addictive...Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cross our hearts and we hope to die.
These recordings date from 1964 to 1972. During this time period, there were two kinds of "pop" music. There was the kind for teenagers, which featured the likes of the Beatles, the Beach Boys and the Ohio Express. And then there was pop music for the parents of teenagers, featuring the likes of Mel Torme, Peggy Lee and the Hollyridge Strings. This CD features teenage pop songs as performed by pop artists for the older folks. Boy, talk about a style clash! Can you imagine Peggy Lee singing "Everyday People", or Julie London singing "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy"? Well, you don't have to imagine it, you can get this CD and hear it for yourself. There are some strange renditions of songs that will be familiar to anyone who ever turned on an oldies radio station. Most of the songs are instumentals, although I wouldn't call it "elevator music", for the most part. Special mention to the Little Big Horns, who include sounds of an Indian attack in their version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (Little Big Horn = Custer's Last Stand, get it?). Fans of "kitsch" should dig this CD.

2-0 out of 5 stars Get Part 1 instead
I think they used up all the 'good' songs on the first On The Rocks compilation - this one seems to be scraping the bottom of the barrel a bit. Part 1 is highly recommended for lovers of things tacky, but Part 2 is a bit thin.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mel Torme, Peggy Lee and Kurt Russell (?) sing rock 'n' roll
Just think of it: Kurt Russell as the Hillary Duff/Lindsay Lohan (take your pick in that contemporary turf war) of his generation. When Russell found himself in a series of successful movies for Disney he was quickly signed to a record deal where he covered bubblegum classics like Tommy Roe's "Dizzy" and The Archies' "Sugar Sugar," which is the final track on "Ultra-Lounge: On the Rocks, Part 2." Make no doubt about it, this is a collection of what would be considered "classic" kitsch 'n' roll (or rock 'n' kitsch if you like). You probably will never be able to get a CD version of Kurt Russell's self-titled debut album, or any of the other bizarre albums that attempted to make rock 'n' roll more palatable for the masses or were simply produced by people heavily into drugs (e.g., "Sebastian Cabot, Actor, Bob Dylan, Poet," "Jayne Mansfield: Shakespeare, Tchaikovsky & Me," Jack Webb's "Just the facts of life, ma'am," or Tony Perkins' "On a Rainy Afternoon"), but you can get this collection of misses and misses (and, to be fair, you can get Robert Mitchums' "Calypso is Like So...," Tony Perkins' self-titled album, and, of course, the mother-lode itself, William Shatner's "Transformed Man").

Editorial Review

Jacques Brel achieved fame through his performances in France, but he was born in Belgium and identified himself strongly with his linguistically divided native land. His acidly humorous lyrics target the hypocrisies of groups as well as individuals, with special attention to Belgium's Flemish population, the military, and the bourgeoisie in general. At the same time, some of Brel's most affecting songs contain passages in Flemish, and many of his lyrics show a pronounced fondness for his "flat country." Brel's irreverent approach to life was sharply reflected in his music and films and can be compared to that of Bob Dylan in the U.S. and Vladimir Vysotsky in Russia, with whom he also shared a capacity for tongue-twisting patter not heard since the early days of Danny Kaye. On this CD, "Le Plat Pays," "Au Suivant," and "Les Bourgeois" illustrate both the somber and raucous aspects of his extensive repertoire. Read more

Easy listening, yeah right. This is a classic compendium of the great pop/jazz singers of the fifties, singing the glories of twentieth century American popular songs.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Vocal Album
This is a great easy listening album, and an interesting jazz album. Nearly all of the big name vocalists of the last 40 years are represented with a tune or two. Also a wonderful list of songs. One problem I have is lack of liner information. Jazz people that hear this will want to know who the players are (and there are some good ones), when all the albums were made, and what albums from which they were chosen. I bought this cd for my mother for her birthday, myself born in 81' having no idea who Julie London is usually listen to heavy metal but I do like a little blues and jazz but don't know much about it other than the stuff from the 50's and 60's usually sounded better than the new r&b mix fluff, after hearing this cd I was amazed it's kinda like everything I ever looked for in jazz albums but never heard, so I'm buying a copy for myself now and probably some more Julie London cd's soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars a true essay 'about the blues'
If one were to write a complete overview spaning Julie London's entire career, 'About the Blues' would stand in the Top 5 of her best albums.

5-0 out of 5 stars the most beautiful voice of America
This ist the first time that I am hearing Annette Hanshaw.I guess she was the most beautiful voice in the roarings 20's and 30's.Good days those days! The people in America was the happiest in the world because they had a nice girl with a marvelous voice. Annette, I love you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Annette Hanshaw Is a Gem!!!
I find Annette Hanshaw's singing incredible. Did she have a great voice? It doesn't matter to me because she is so easy to listen to and one CD wasn't enough for me. While this is a superb collection and I love ASV/Living Era's array of splendid music from the 20s and 30s, I still needed more of Annette's recordings. What a pity that she stopped recording in 1934. Her 78s have been found and put on CDs and they sound fantastic because of the feeling she puts into her singing. This is an especially good one to be introduced to her music since it has a bit of all her recordings from 1926-1934. I easily give it five stars. I prefer her over Ruth Etting and that says a lot!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Do, Do, Doget, get, get this CD!
I was looking for 1920s (and '30s and '40s) music, so I perused Amazon's reviews. I didn't believe you guys, so I went and previewed it at a local store, beings we couldn't get Amazon's online previewer to function.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!!!
I was so excited when I saw a new album by Jane Oliver. The first time I saw her was back in the late 70's on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. That night she sang "Stay the Night". What a voice. I have purchased all her music in all forms, 8-track, LP's, cassettes now CD's.
5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome back, you've been missed
I have loved Jane Olivor's voice since I first heard her at Carnegie Hall over 25 years ago and have been an avid fan since. I own every one of her cd's and now to have a dvd of her is like "being there"I loved the dvd and she still "has it".
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every min. of the 18 yr. wait!
The title of this CD should reflect some of the reasons Jane took time off in between her recordings, but somehow what's lost in the title, is made up for in content.Jane's husband lost his battle with Cancer and she needed time away from her obligations as a live performer (and studio artist) in order to be by his side ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Her finest album as of yet...
This is an exellent release, because Sinatra recorded so many great songs, Sutton had many to choose from. No, Sutton does not phrase like Ol' Blues Eyes, and that is why this cd is so great!Every jazz singer, or I should say any decent jazz singer today is on some level influenced by Sinatra, and it is great to hear Sutton's take on Sinatra's signature tunes, without turning into a lounge swinger herself.A great album, by a truly great jazz singer. This cd is very subtle and extremely romantic.
4-0 out of 5 stars Dancing in the Dark - Sutton
Excellent renditions of old, but certainly not tired, standards.Tierney Sutton, along with several others, have breathed new life into songs that have been around for a while and, in some instances, been beaten up by lesser performers.

2-0 out of 5 stars The CD is OK
All I can say about Ms. Tierny is that she has a nice, mellow voice, but songs that can be sung in 3 minutes take her 5 minutes. She drags out all of the songs on this CD.I was very disappointed that I paid money for music to sleep to! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Trusting your memory
I remembered loving this album years ago when it came out.Apparently my tastes have changed over the years, as I wasn't as thrilled with the CD as I remembered being all those years ago.Still, there are some good cuts and overall I would have to say it's worth listening to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jane Olivor cd Chasing Rainbows
A must have for all those fans of hers and others who appreciate
5-0 out of 5 stars an all-time favorite
Every year or two I dig out Jane Olivor's first album, "First Night" and second album, "Chasing Rainbows" and indulge in a few days of Olivor listening. These two recordings are on my short list of all-time favorites.

Editorial Review

Abandoned as a baby and raised in a brothel, Piaf was dicovered singing in the streets of Paris by a club owner, who started her 30-year career during which time she became France's best-loved and best-known songstress, with major hits from beginning to end. At times singing in front of the band with no microphone, her powerful voice and emotional delivery was a striking contrast to her diminutive size. Nicknamed "the Little Sparrow," Piaf was plagued by controversy, from implications in a clubowner's death to multiple affairs (including Yves Montand and Charles Aznavour), drugs, and alcohol. Her torchy cabaret and dramatically theatrical songs eventually won her global recognition. This two-CD set covers highlights of her career up to her death in 1963, many of which are now standards. Described in France as "the greatest figure in the history of song," her voice still rings with a passion for life, something that eventually consumed her. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Piaf Tonight!
This two CD set is not merely a magnificent sampling of Edith Piaf's songs; it is a celebration of her career as one of the greatest female singers the world has ever known or ever will know. The songs include many of her beloved songs recorded by Piaf between 1946 and 1963.
