5-0 out of 5 stars Marlene
I have many of her CDs but this is the first where all the songs are sung in German. She's the best!

2-0 out of 5 stars not so great
The last 3 or 4 songs are old, good recordings. The other songs were more recently recorded and it sounds like an old lady with a 2 pack-a-day habit of no-filter camels was singing.Yuck.4-0 out of 5 stars Where have all the flowers gone?
This is an all-German CD of Marlene's. The German version of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" (Sag Mir Wo Die Blumen Sin) is on this CD; the French version (my favorite) and the English are on "The Essential Marlene Dietrich" CD available from Amazon.com UK. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Voice!
Marlene Dietrich undoubtedly has a spectacular and lovely voice. This CD can appeal to so many.I am fourteen, and even I can appreciate the time of Marlene Dietrich. Her beauty survives. She has a voice that surely canenchant eveyone. This CD has a perfectly reasonable price and a shortbiography of Marlene Dietrich inside the cover in which it tells some ofher accomplishments. It is not a brilliant bio or anything, but it washelpful for me because I knew practically nothing about the woman.I alsohave to note, though, that the quality of the songs is not great, but thisCD is worth it."Lili Marlene," "Black Market,""Falling in Love Again," and "Near You" are surely thebest songs.Dietich's voice is beatiful, though a little deep andmasculine. It is a pleasing gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous
The sultry, siren-esque sounds of Marlene's lyrics are unparalelled in thewhole sphere of music. From the delicacy of falling in love again to theraunch of Jonny, each provides a seamingly aphrodisiac quality. Although norecording can do her justice, this one makes a vallant attempt. BravoMarlene! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars lovely record
Patti LuPone is wonderful as always. Her selection of material is wonderful too.Her voice is addictive.

5-0 out of 5 stars PATTI LuPONE'S LOVE STORYBOOK
The name of Patti LuPone is hardly unbeknown to the musical theatre aficionados all over the world. For the last 25 years she has been one of the ultimate divas in the genre, memorable both to the American and London audiences and cast recordings collectors as the big, passionate and brassy voice of Evita, Norma Desmond, Fantine, Reno Sweeney or Mrs. Lovett.
5-0 out of 5 stars How she sings live is show she sings in the studio - awesome
This gifted theatre singer originated Evita and Norma Desmond onstage, and its easy to see why she can tackle the characters with big voices and vocally showy songs. Its quite a change to hear a studio album from LuPone after her previous live albums (Live at Carnegie Hall and Heatwave: Sings Irving Berlin at the Hollywood Bowl). The good news is, she sings just as good in studio as when she sings live -- a true mark of an authentic singer. And although she sang songs from Randy Newman, Lennon & McCartney and other contemporary songwriters notably the cabaret songwriter du jour John Bucchino, her debt to theatre is still evident, like "Not a Day Goes By" which still sounds affecting after numerous recordings of that song. Her take of the raucous "I Never Do Anything Twice" exploited her comedic skills at employing sudden stops, trill-like explorations and still not sound breathless. This is an album that can be played like a pop record at home because of the combination of delicacy, intelligence, choice of material and just plain good ole singing merits. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great piano work-singing so-so
This album was done late in Short's life and it shows in his strained singing.Fortunately, his piano work is still fine, and his fellow jazz artists are fine. The album is worth getting for Short's great piano work.A sad farewell to a fine artist,Bobby Short. He sings only on a few numbers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bobby Short - We Miss You
Specific songs forever attach to special performers.Certainly with Bobby Short -a happy upbeat atmosphere, an intimate surrounding with an intent, yet relaxed gathering. This CD answers all that. The lyrics crystal-clear, so younger generations might just stumble onto themand want more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now this is what I call great cabaret and lounge music...
I love to drink a martini and smoke my Cuban cigars to this, and thsi alone...This is one of my most treasured lounge cd's, it's a throwback to those classic lp's recorded in the 50's, you know an old fashion make out record.A sophistocated album to amoke and srink, and converse about exotic places far away that you've traveled to.a great coktail party cd, and Bobby is also an exellent jazz musician, probably one of the jazziest of all the cabareters... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of her finest
For this set of superior standards "jazz diva", Wesla Whitfield delivers all of her songs(which are jazz standards), with thier original verses. She always is backed by tasteful small jazz combos(in this case Mike Grinsell's), and she improvises lightly(on thsi set she improvises a little more than usuaul), and has a bell like clarity to her singing, and perfect disction. She has a style all her own, those who appriciate good caberet singer, or jazz singers will enjoy this fine set.

5-0 out of 5 stars very best of all
this is very best of all wesla.I like much, in fact all family enjoy this, wesla good jazz singer, you like her too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ooow, this is nice!!!
I may be old fashioned but I like it when singers sing the entire song. Please allow me to explain my last coment. Most singers today leave out an important part of the song, the itroduction, the verse.Miss Wesla Whitfield sings verses to songs, the way thay would have been sung in the shows they were introduced in.Wesla is not a strict caberet singer, meaning that she takes liberties with songs, bending melodies, and reshaping songs, all very tastefully. With the help of her lovely husband Mr. Mike Grinsell, her pianist and arranger, wesla is able to express her jazz filled smooth and silky voice.her style is charming and old fasion yet modern and jazzy. Her small band is very jazz oriented as are the arrangemets. This will be a great stocking stuffer for any jazz fan! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Love Letters/Feeling Good
Poor quality CD, would not recommend purchasing.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome collection...
I am very happy that EMI/Liberty decided to release two more of Julie's LPs on CD. However, the sound quality is far from digitally remastered. Any other compilation which has been distributed has managed to make her recordings sound magnificent.
1-0 out of 5 stars More disrespect to customers from EMI
While I do like Julie London's voice and performance (although she really should NOT sing "Never On Sunday" ever again), I must bash EMI's complete and utter disrespect towards the customers. This disc is NOT an Audio CD, but, instead, it is a modified disc with "copy protection". Not that Macrovision's lock (which is basically just a way to swindle extra money from the unsuspecting clients, who think they're buying a CD) is offering any "copy protection". Anyone can rip it to their heart's content. But the original is unlistenable on car CD players and on a great deal of home CD and DVD players. Until EMI's bean counters stop their questionable - at best - tactics and until Amazon.com lists this album CORRECTLY as a COPY-PROTECTED product, AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still FABULOUS after 40 years !!
Giddy Can-Can type chansonettes, soulful ballads, Edit Piaf-esque hymns to Paris, Josephine Baker, at the peak of her vocal powers, delivers them all with consummate mastery and apparent ease. Her rich, creamy mezzo and rapid even vibrato are the perfect vehicle for these chansons, and her timing and dynamic expression are impeccable. Far from the twittery interpretations of her early recordings, these songs are the works of a mature master. 4-0 out of 5 stars Ueli from Switzerland

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best and largest compilation!
Edith Piaf was to popular French music of the 1930s to the 1950s as Sinatra was to American music; an unstoppable force.Much like Sinatra Piaf sang with a naked raw emotion and a gritty evocativeness that cuts to your heart, and like Sinatra her voice is immediately identifiable."Love and Passion" is a truly massive helping of Piaf's recordings from 1936 to 1950, the prime of her recording years and includes many of her most memorable signature songs.Even if you don't understand a word of French you cannot miss the powerful delivery and evocative nature of Piaf's voice, and if you understand French you fully comprehend the gripping and vital lyrics of love, loss, anger, regret, and a life well lived with no regrets. The sound quality on the recordings is quite good, especially when compared with other recordings of the era that have sometimes been inadeptly re-mastered.I've seen quite a few Piaf compilations over the years but nothing matches the beadth, scope, quality, and depth of this collection.Any beginner should start here. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Last Place To Start
If you're thinking of dipping your toe into the tumultuous waters of Nina Simone's artistry then you're making a good decision, but whatever you do don't start here. This is for completists and fanatics only. (Try my favourite single album "Baltimore" perhaps, or one of the many credible compilations such as "Sugar In My Bowl - The Very Best Of 1967-1972").

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!!!!
I couldnt disagree more with the previous review. I loved this! I only had a vague knowledge of K T Sullivan and never heard of Nadler, but I love Dorothy Fields songs so I took a chance on this. Weather together or alone they both shine on this offering. Sullivan has a beautiful voice and does well on the ballads (Dont Blame Me is especially fine), and also does well on some of the playful ones (He Had Refinement medley). Nadler sings with more gusto and has the more bombastic numbers. Their singing styles are as different as night and day, but somehow it all works. The only bad cut is I'm In the Mood for Love, which is ruined by pairing it with Digga Digga Do by Nadler. (Who thought that up? They dont go together at all!). I find myself playing this CD often. Wonderful songs (I discovered some new favorites too!) sung by 2 fine singers who love what they are singing! You cant go wrong with Dorothy Fields.

1-0 out of 5 stars BITTERLY DISAPPOINTING - NOT WORTHY OF HER
i heard KT Sullivan on a program in the UK and sent for this CD for which I waited a long time. It is the most disappointing Cd I have ever heard. What possessed KT Sullivan to team up with Nadler, I will never know. His arrangements are awful - do not suit her voice and the key changes are positively offensive. His piano playing is insensitive and I could not wait to put the CD in the Trash.GREAT SONGS - dreadfuly performed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars French "Pop" at its best.
Jean Sablon's "Le Fiacre" was why I bought this CD but there is so much more pleasant music on it, and well transferred to CD too. A bonus, thanks to Google, is that it is easy to find all the words, and a rough translation, of each I've tried so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Reissue with Quality
This is almost identical in content to another CD I purchased years ago, but the sound quality is much, much better. I am unsure whether the producers simply got their hands on better masters, or whether a different filtering technique is in use.For pre-WW II work the sound quality is very pleasant. This CD is an excellent introduction to the music that captivated the world between wars; my non-French-speaking friends have found themselves enjoying it.It may also serve as a gateway to the purchase of individual artists' volumes.Highly recommended! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Russky
Vladimir Vysotsky is amazing, regardless of language. Not being fluent in Russian really has no effect on listening to the music, because in the end, any wonderful artist can give off emotion, and Vysotsky doesn't just do that, he saturates you ears with sound, and with his voice I end up making my own meaning within the words.

HOLY SMOKES!Had I known how BAD this CD was going to be, I would have used ear plugs!
5-0 out of 5 stars AH MAURICE!
It's always a pleasure to celebrate MOMO who made so many people aware of the FRENCH culture throughout the world. This collection is wonderful;most of it is a reminicence of MAURICE's early years in HOLLYWOOD 1928-1935.It is interesting to notice that many songs here were recorded also in FRENCH.Such is the case with MY LOVE PARADE(mon cocktail d'amour),PARIS,STAY THE SAME(paris,je t'aime d'amour),YOU BROUGHT A NEW KIND OF LOVE TO ME(vous etes mon nouveau bonheur)and JUST A BUM(ma pomme).CHEVALIER also recorded MIMI in both languages. There is one important complaint i have to say:why not mentionning the names of the writers and the composers of the songs?Of course, this is not a good enough reason not to buy this.Maybe they were afraid to paid some of the writers and composers who are still alive. Not everybody for instance knows that THE POOR APACHE was written by RODGERS AND HART for the 1932 film LOVE ME TONIGHT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not released 2000
OK, the blurb up there says "released 2000." That's for the *CD*which is an aurally cleaned up version of stuff from the 30s and 40s. Thisis an old record, but a very good one. Chevalier's voice has a perpetualsmile, and his accent on classics like "Walkin My Baby Back Home"is something you won't hear from the current swing-era-clone bands.Listening to Chevalier, I feel good. I suspect you will too. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Tiny Tim - 'Live! At The Royal Albert Hall' (Rhino Handmade)
I'm giving this CD a four star rating because Tiny Tim has always managed to hold my full attention through out any(including this archive release)of his CD's I've ever had, listened to and/or borrowed.'Live!At...' is pulled from a never-before-heard performance that took place in October,1968.Sound quality may not be the absolute best, but it's acceptable.Tunes that I got a kick out of were "On The Front Porch","Buddy,Can You Spare A Dime?",Sonny And Cher's "I Got You Babe","Frisco Flo" and Mr.Tim's signature gem, none other than "Tiptoe Through The Tulips With Me".Good novelty fun-time music here for the taking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thank you.
This CD features a previously unreleased concert by Tiny Tim, at the Royal Albert Hall in London, 30 October 1968.It was such a major event, that even the Beatles and the Rolling Stones were in attendance. The concert was performed with a full orchestra, although sometimes Tiny sang here with no orchestral backing. This was during the height of Tiny's popularity, and was probably the biggest concert of his career.Tiny performs a lot of old songs, and a few new ones, in his trademark style. He usually will preface the song with some remarks about when the song was written and who originally sang it.Tiny was often made fun of for his singing, but he actually could carry a tune (albeit with a lot of tremolo). He often would perform songs in imitation of the style of the original singer. He can be heard here singing in the style of Bing Crosby, Rudy Vallee, Bob Dylan and other singers who have been forgotten nowadays.Unfortunately, the tape ran out before the concert was over, and had to be replaced by another tape, so about 90 seconds of the concert were not recorded (the remarks before "I Hold Your Hand in Mine" and the first line of the song). But that doesn't detract that much from the enjoyment of the concert, if you're a Tiny Tim fan.It is well recorded, for the time period, using a 4-Track recorder. The CD comes with a reproduction of the original concert program, albeit in a much smaller size.

3-0 out of 5 stars A vintage 1968 concert recording
Rhino Handmade has issued this limited edition CD, featuring Tiny Tim at Royal Albert Hall in 1968.Great care was given to this release, including replicating the original program that was given to the audience (albeit in a much smaller size).Unfortunately, the original tapes were not of the highest quality, and even feature a brief gap where the tapes were changed.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I Just Discovered Wesla Whitfield
After reading about Wesla Whitfield in "O" Magazine, I was drawn to her and bought "In My Life" last year (2005).I am a singer myself and am always interested in hearing new (to me) voices.Well, I was not disappointed (mostly) and love her renditions of many of my old favorites.I frequently listen to her CD in my car and use it to warm up my voice. My one criticism is the over-pronunciation of such words that end phrases like "love" which comes across as "luvah" (with the emphasis on the "v" and "h" at the end) and "dreams" which she pronounces "dreamzh."I also found "Where is Love" to be lovely and poignant except the long, drawn out, jerky pronunciation of "Wher er er er is love."That word ("where") should flow seamlessly. Will I buy more of Wesla's recordings?YES!

4-0 out of 5 stars Another great, romantic album
If you hear the first 32 bars of this album, you're liable to ask, "Who or what is that??"
5-0 out of 5 stars 'In My Life'...Wesla in top form
If you are a fan of Wesla's you will definitely want to own her latest recording. If you haven't had the pleasure of hearing her previously then buy this album and prepare for a wonderful treat!
