Editorial Review

"The rhythm is gonna get you" is the tag line of one of Gloria Estefan's biggest hits, but it could also serve as the mantra for the Cuban-born singer's road to the top of the charts. Estefan's forte is middle-of-the-road pop, but all of her upbeat hits are fueled by driving Latin percussion, the feature that set Estefan's music apart from the rest of the flyaway pop of the 1980s and early '90s. 5-0 out of 5 stars What a voice!!!! She knows how to use it too.
At last, a singer to become excited about. With a voice with the clarity and range of Sarah Vaughan, Roberta tackles a series of well known and not so well known standards. The girl can swing, scat and capture your heart with her interpretations. She takes her time and makes use of her impressive voice and makes great use of space and pacing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Needs more than 5 stars!
Dark, bright, swinging, thoughtful, tasteful ... this CD has a touch of it all.Roberta is clearly a talent worthy of a wider audience.I heard her originally on the well known Jonathan Schwartz radio show here in the NYC area (on XM now as well), and could hardly wait to purchase this release.Fans of jazz vocals can only hope more will be forthcoming.Great arrangements, great recording, great musicians - but mostly the great talent of Roberta Gambarini.

5-0 out of 5 stars AS GOOD AS IT GETS! ! ! ! !
FINALLY ! ! ! A femalel vocalist who REALLY is in the same league as Ella, Sarah and the few other greats who ever walked the earth. Not only is she the BEST female vocalist to come along in DECADES, this album is PERFECT. Besides her absolutely perfect singing, phrasing, intonation and style etc., you also get a group of SUPERB musicians backing her up and playing exactly what is called for. You ALSO get JAMES MOODY on tenor sax and vocals on two of the tracks. ALSO, for you out there who want to know how good that high end equiptment you might own can sound, the recording quality of this CD is absolutely perfect. Recorded and mixed by Al Schmitt. This guy should get an award. Every time I play this CD it's hard to convince myself that it isn't live in my living room. So many great CD's suffer from really lousy recording quality. This is a great CD to see how good vocals sound on that high end gear. All I can say is, being a jazz and female vocalist fanatic, FINALLY someone up there in the ranks with Ella and all the other greats finally appears. And on her DEBUT CD ! ! ! I can't wait for Roberta Gambarini to do another CD. I've never been this excited about a new artist. This is a MUST HAVE ! ! ! I never had much faith in the Grammy Awards, we all know they go to those who sell the most CD's, but if SHE doesn't get a Grammy for this CD, then that is PROOF that the Grammy's are a farce. BUY IT. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Watch the movie...then listen to the music!
I remember when the movie premeired in the 70's with Kris and Barbra. The soundtrack has some great cuts on it but, to get the most of of your listening pleasure, I reccomend watching the movie first. Otherwise some of the cuts seem out of place in this complilation of songs. I've ordered the movie but it hasn't been released yet. I can't wait to see it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great album title by Barbra Streisand!!!
This album by Barbra Streisand, which is a companion title to the movie of the same name from 1976, is one of her best selling titles ever. It contains 11 songs, 6 of which contain Barbra's beautiful singing voice (including the timeless "Evergreen"), 3 of them have Kris Kristofferson's vocals, and 2 have Barbra and Kris singing together. This was and still is a great movie and this album was a hot seller when it was first released in late '76 and was at the top of the charts for quite a long time. The music on this album is wonderful. I mainly prefer Barbra's songs on this title more than Kris' songs. His material on this was okay; his performance was not too bad in the movie. I am not very familiar with any of Kris' other material that he did during his singing career before or after doing the movie. Anyway, I love this album (and the movie, too). I am looking forward to getting the movie on DVD sometime soon. I don't quite understand why the movie wasn't available on DVD before, but Barbra's fans will be looking forward to getting it soon. I have this album on LP (3 copies, believe it or not) and on CD. No Barbra Streisand music collection is complete without this title. Get it while you can!!! Now, I am going to give a brief summary of each of the eleven songs on this album:

Renee is beyond amazing and I am a hugh fan! I have purchased at least 10 CD's for my family and friends and they all are fans. She has everything - an amazing voice, an amazing presence and amazing talent. The only thing that would be better is if Renee did a duet with Michael Buble - the two of them would be better than Sinatra and...well better than everybody! Renee and Michael are the best talents to come along in moons!!!!!

Frankly, the first song I heard was "On a Slow Boat to China." As a former lounge lizard piano player, this was always one of my favorite songs, and this arrangement was as close to how I played it, as I have ever heard. I knew absolutely nothing about Renee Olstead other than her name. After visiting her website (which plays the songs of this albums while you browse) I heard another favorite;" Taking a Change on Love." Today, I read that she is only a teenager, and am blown away. Not exactly what I was expecting. Far better!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Do You Like Buffy? If So...Get This CD!
When I first saw the "Buffy" episode "Once More With Feeling" It instantly became one of my favorite episodes. The cast displayed excellent vocals and Joss Whedon did an awsome job writing the music. The CD contains all of the music from the episode and more, including: Suite From "Restless":Willows Nightmare/First Rage/Chain Of Ancients, Suite From "Hush":Silent Night/First Kiss/Enter The Gentleman/Schism, Sacrifice (from "The Gift" and a cool demo of Somthing To Sing About with vocals by Kai Cole and music performed by Joss Whedon! All of which make excellent additions to the CD. All songs are actually performed by the cast of the show. My favorites on this album would have to be: I've Got A Theroy/Bunnies/If We're Together, I'll Never Tell, Rest In Peace, Walk Through The Fire, Standing. All of the other songs are also excellent but the ones that I think are the best.

Musical theatre person + Buffy fan = great CD! The songs are catchy, the lyrics are fresh, and it's inspiring to know the cast is ACTUALLY singing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Let's Have That Once More With More Feeling.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer Once More With Feeling. One Of the greatest soundtracks ever. And for that matter "Going Throught The Motions" was ok but the sound affect of Buffy slaying the Vampire at oww would have made it much better.Amber Benson (Tara) God can this woman sing or what.I meen just hearing her with "Under Your Spell".It brought a tear to my eye.And with Amber and Anthony singing together in "Under Your Spell/Standing".I thought the tears wouldn't stop flowing. They work so well together.James Marsters man o' man is that man a bloody good singer. "Rest In Peace".As the character Spike trying to let Buffy know how he feels about her it is bloody great.Xander And Anya with "I'll Never Tell".Well I take the fifth. Oh what the heck I laughed.I cried.I played it again. The rest of the CD is absolutely Perfect and I would recomend it highly to any and all Buffy The Vampire Slayer fans out there. Now sing it with me now... "Where do we go from here?" ... Read more

If there has ever been a better live album than Judy at Carnegie Hall, I'd like to know what it is. Simply exhilarating in audio, one can only imagine what it was like to be in that audience in 1961.How did they manage to not spontaneously combust? There are so many spin-tingling moments that one is hard-pressed to choose a favorite. From the subdued and sublime ballad If Love Were All to the raucous tributes Chicago and San Franciso, Judy covers all the bases and hits a home run every time. Even when she forgets the lyrics, as she does in You Go To My Head, she does it brilliantly and with charm.I've owned this album in one form or other since I was a kid in the 1970s and I never get tired of it. Even if you think you don't like this kind of music it is an amazing experence. Buy this. Buy it now.

Editorial Review

Tom Jones all but invented saucy power pop back before the sixties even started to swing when his second single "It's Not Unusual" rocketed up the UK charts in 1965. After that initial triumph the singer never looked back, tying his hair back with a thin black ribbon and putting some rather expressive body English into his stage moves, which assured that the stage floor would be routinely pelted with various undergarments pitched by enthusiastic fans. Almost four decades later both Jones and his audience are no less fervent as Wales' second-most famous export runs through his extensive and varied songbook, still imbuing his old chestnuts like "What's New Pussycat?" and "Delilah" with a sense of naughty fun and irony. But Jones is at his best while giving the latest generation of rockers a run for their money, as he pairs up with the likes of Wyclef Jean, the Sterophonics, Art of Noise, the Cardigans, and Mousse T; as he overhauls staid tired standards like "Mama Told Me (Not To Come)" or "Baby It's Cold Outside" with his arch humor and gutsy delivery. Prince's "Kiss" crackles with an inner light that even the great Minneapolis savant didn’t intend, while his duet with Portishead is as cold and disturbing as a grave. A must have album. --Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tom Jones Greatest Hits
excellent music-half of it is jivy dance beat and some of the songs are ones that Tom Jones is famous for. I have never been a Tom Jones fan but I do like this cd

5-0 out of 5 stars Tom Jones BABY!
I went to see Tom Jones for the second time in Las Vegas a few years ago. He had some new material so I decided to check it out. His new CD was a greatest hits but had mixed in all of his new stuff. And I must say, his new stuff ROCKS. The new songs: Black Betty, Mama Told Me (Not to Come), Sex Bomb, Tom Jones International, and If I Only Knew were all excellent. Toms rendition of some of these old classics just go to show you what a performer he is as he makes them his own. And the new origional songs are just as good. And of course with it being a Tom Jones greatest hits you have all his great standards. I have also heard several of the new songs used in some big screen Hollywood movies recently like Domino and a few others. Black Betty and Mama Told Me Not to Come are the highlights of this new CD and Toms pipes are in exceptional... as always.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent collection
If you are a fan of Tom Jones, you should like this CD.I am not a huge fan of his, but I like most of his big hits and a lot of his big hits are on this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Billie's Best - Accept No Substitutes
Billie Holiday is the quintessential jazz singer; despite a limited vocal range she set the standard by which all others are measured. It's all about the quality of her voice, the lush tone, and her marvelously idiosyncratic phrasing.Though her career was short and troubled, she recorded a lot, which means novice collectors must avoid innumerable bear traps. In general, her later work should be ignored, by then she was wearing her emotional problems like an ugly hat, despair manifested itself in performances so lackluster they're depressing at best, frequently downright tragic.

Although Robert Preston and Barbara Cook put in stellar performances, it's the music that's the star of this hugely successful document of the 1958 Broadway smash. Written entirely by Meredith Willson, it drew from memories of his childhood in a small Midwestern town. Preston plays a traveling salesman/con artist, while Cook is the dull spinster "Marian the Librarian," whose love for Preston's character makes her come alive. "Seventy-Six Trombones" has become a marching band standard, while "Ya Got Trouble" (featuring dizzying fast-talk from Preston) and "'Til There Was You" (with a gorgeous vocal from Cook) remain well known even among those who have never seen the show. The latter was also a favorite of the Beatles, who covered it on their first album. Read more

This the best version of "The Music Man" available, especially if you're looking for the Broadway cast. The performances here are all terrific, the recording and mastering are great, and the liner notes are informative and thorough."The Music Man" isavailable in several other versions and forms, including other releases of the same original cast recording, but without the good mastering or liner notes found here.My wife and I, hoping to listen to this great show with our kids, first purchased other versions that were easier to find (e.g., on iTunes) and those were major disappointments.Buy this CD (Broadway Classics from Angel) and accept no substitutes.

4-0 out of 5 stars A really cute show
This is a fantastic score, and though the original cast recording may be more authentic/true to the Peanuts cartoon, a clearer sound and a bigger orchestra does nothing but good for this CD. Anthony Rapp is a fantastic charlie brown and shows his distress perfectly. the song that was written for kristin chenoweth is laugh-out-loud funny and a great addition.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Broadway show for families
As a long-time Broadway junkie, I've made it my mission to introduce my 2 young daughters to as many age-appropriate musicals as possible.Charlie Brown is fun with a basic, life-affirming message without being sugary and melodramatic. The multicultural casting on this version was a nice touch, and the cast vocals blend nicely as well as standing out on their own. It's no surprise that Kristin Chenoweth won the Tony for this performance-just listen to My New Philosophy and you'll see why.Great to hear Anthony Rapp apart from Rent, and BD Wong's My Blanket and Me is sweet and charming.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Cute Show
I recently directed a production of You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. The show is really sweet, though it is hard to make sure that it is not overly "cutzy". I like the vocalist in this updated version, though some of the modernization of the songs are overdone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sterling-quality SOUTH PACIFIC with some minor demerits
This world-premiere recording of South Pacific is justly regarded as one of the best recordings of this classic Rodgers & Hammerstein score. Although it was recorded in 1949, way before today's digital technology, it still sounds magical, seductive and wonderful, until it allows other performances to pale in comparison. The score is wonderfully served by the original Broadway cast, still immersed in the glowing reviews that were given for the show and the score. And, the Sony recording, deapite being a constricted and rough-sounding mono recording, sounds much better than ever before thanks to a sparkling 20-bit remastering of the original source tapes.5-0 out of 5 stars SOUTH TERRIFIC!
A first-rate score by Rodgers & Hammerstein; four sensational and perfectly cast leads; and an ensemble (orchestra and chorus) that does more than just support the stars. The album always has been a joy from start to finish! In just under 46 minutes you get all the key musical moments from the score. The Cd includes 4 bonus tracks: Mary Martin's solo recordings of the cut songs "His Girl Back Home" (Originally to be sung by Cable as "My Girl Back Home") and "Loneliness of Evenng"; Ezio Pinza's solo recording of "Bali Ha'i" and a Symphonic Scenario for Concert orchestra conducted by Andre Kostelanetz. Best of all the CD re-produces the original artworked that was on the first LP issue in 1949.5-0 out of 5 stars The original is still the greatest
Growing up in the musical wasteland of the 1980s, I often raided my parents' record collection out of sheer desperation for songs with meaningful lyrics and real instruments.Among the many wonderful discoveries I made that way was an exotically titled soundtrack album with a pretty yellow and green cover, which my grandfather had apparently bought new in 1949.Perhaps intrigued by the record's vintage, or maybe by the vague familiarity of some of the song titles, I brought it back to my room...and it hasn't left my collection since.Read more

I picked up this one to replace my seldom-played LP, "Ella and Louis."Like most collections, it suffers a bit from uneven textures (the lush orchestration of "Summertime" seems like an intrusion on the intimate rapport established in the preceding numbers) and audio quality (variances in mics, mixing and engineering can be hard to disguise). So go with "Ella and Louis" unless some of the tunes on this "Best of--" anthology seem absolutely essential.

Editorial Review

Commemorating the 40th anniversary of Nat King Cole's death in 1965, this compilation is the CD companion of an excellent DVD/documentary. Produced with the blessing of his estate, this disc is a thorough survey of his timeless genius--all recorded on the Capitol label. It captures his sumptuous and soothing tenor voice crooning on the pop tunes he made famous, like the ethereal "Nature Boy," the melancholy "Mona Lisa," and the bouncy "Straighten Up and Fly Right," and "Route 66." It also features Cole's often-overlooked skills as an Earl Hines-style pianist. "Quizas, Quizas, Quizas (Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps)," and "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup," attest to his international appeal, and see if you can keep a dry eye when you listen to Natalie Cole's posthumous, digitally-enhanced duet with her father on "Unforgettable." From strings to big bands, Nat King Cole is never out of style. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great compliation
I must admit that I am a great Nat Cole fan.this compilation contains many tracks that you've enjoyed numerous times.I will say that a couple of gems were released on this album. His French version of Autumn Leaves is wonderful.I don't understand the language but the song is beautiful.I've also enjoyed his multi-lingual version of LOVE.He evidently recorded it in many languages and this is the result. He may not have the proper accent, but to me, his effort in each langauage makes him THE universal singer.

5-0 out of 5 stars 8 star nat king Cole at his best
46 yr old reviewer his best cd yet to date cant miss a smooth groove or his smooth voice just keeps getting better. George Bretzlaff

5-0 out of 5 stars great singing of great songs
I know i gave it five stars, but how many times can you re-package his greatest hits (while adding one or two rarities). This must be at least the twentieth re-packaging of these same songs, and I keep buying them because i have an obsessive compulsive disorder. It seems like every year (or even less) there is another cd out containing the greatest hits of Nat Cole, But i feel if this is the way people can be introduced to him then all for the better. But for some of us who have been fans of his since whenever, it would be nice and thoughtful of his record company to throw us a bone every now and then.Cole is one of the few great singers who could toss off the burden of Sinatra's influence and have his own style.Frank destroyed generations of pop singers, who could not help but either sound like him or come pretty close to same in interpretation of the standards. Both he and Nat stand like monuments (pace Bing and Al) in the delivery of the great American popular song. The female singers like Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday and Mabel Mercer are a whole other story.I like Nat not just because of his beautiful voice (which i think veers more toward baritone than tenor) but also his sincerity, his diction, and his great musicality. The same goes for Frank.I am humbled by their greatness. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Memories !!!!
I was pleasantly suprised to get this collection and have the songs and the versions of the songs collected on here. I have most all of the songs on other CD's but to have them all in one collection was awesome. I also found a few songs that I had forgotten about and it was great to relive the memories. Reccomended for anyone who loves Olivia and wants one Disk that has all of the best of her music of the era.

1-0 out of 5 stars Christmas?
Sorry to ruin your party, but Christmas music gets old after a while. By a while I mean about the day after Thanksgiving. You can only have so much Christmas, and that Christmas music must not suck. I get overloaded by pathetic Christmas music everyday and it pushes me over the edge. By the time I get home (By the way, why does every radio station play Christmas music?), I have to crank up some Pantera, In Flames, Megadeth, Slayer, or Shadows Fall. That's how I am alive and well.
