With a series of terrific albums, Cassandra Wilson has established herself as one of the day's great vocalists and, in branching out from jazz into blues and folk and pop, paved the way for genre-crossing stars including Norah Jones. But the Mississippi native has rarely sounded as relaxed or winning as she does on "Thunderbird," which teams her with the stalwart Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as the movie, the music is fitting, fun show to see and hear
I saw this show live on broadway, immediatly had to buy the album afterwards.Stephen Lynch was a perfect fit for this role.Unfortunately his understudy did the show the night I was there, but I can hear Lynch do the songs as they were meant to be here on the CD. Excellent sound, great splicing, gets the story through.Lynch really has the raw voice to not sound so "broadwayish" and fake, makes the role feel real, much as Adam Sandler had played it.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best musical of 2006!
Shame it won no Tony awards, but that just goes to show how screwed up they are. 2006 will be remembered as the year the Best Musical Tony was stolen from The Wedding Singer just as in 2004 when Wicked lost. It is a beautiful recording and kudos to all who star in the production. My personal favorite is the song. "Right In Front of Your Eyes" with the wonderful Amy Spanger (of Reefer Madness!).

4-0 out of 5 stars Well produced cast album of what appears to be a lively and enjoyable show
The past few seasons Broadway has been flooded with stage adaptations of popular movies: THE PRODUCERS, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, THE LION KING, and now comes THE WEDDING SINGER from the hit Adam Sandler film. Boasting a lively score by newcomers Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin, the show has been struggling at the box-office thanks to mixed reviews and being shut out at the Tony awards. The cast album gets off to a great start with "It's your wedding day" and there are several other numbers along the way that do what good show tunes should do: develop the plot and detail the characters.Stars Stephen Lynch and Laura Benanti play well off each other, even if not every song is pure gold. Even if THE WEDDING SINGER fails on Broadway it will probably have a long and healthy life in regional and community theatres. The booklet contains a detailed synopsis and all the lyrics as well as quite a few pictures from the show.

Editorial Review

This solo recording is a fitting coda for Keith Jarrett's more restrained, less prolific output in the 1990s. The fitful vamps and long, ruminative improvisations that made Jarrett a solo piano star in the '70s are here either stillborn or tightly tethered to classic melodies from the likes of Gershwin and Ellington, yet there is not the slightest hint of repression. Instead, Jarrett sprinkles notes and brings the familiar strains of "I Loves You, Porgy" and "Someone to Watch over Me" to bloom with a dynamic but resonantly earth-toned vibrancy. Rarely has the pianist kept his music so simple and free of pageantry. Audible moans and shenanigans with the piano's sustain pedal are held to a minimum, and even brawny, sing-along stuff like "Shenandoah" and "My Wild Irish Rose" never lapse into sloppy sentimentality--indeed, Jarrett's two-handed caress of the latter song is so delicately self assured, the tune seems to play itself. Among the 10 tracks, only "I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good" finds the pianist stretching into busy (but still crisp) extended passages. Yes, there are moments when Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars In a world with so much noise...
In a world with so much noise and clamor it is a pleasure to listen to this album. The set is so wonderfully put together and it shows the love for the ballad. K.J. has demonstrated that music does not have to be a constant flurry of notes and tempo to hit the mark. For those who complain about the sound quality of the recording I would suggest for this once, they listen with their hearts instead of their ears, with this perspective they will appreciate the music even more.

5-0 out of 5 stars His best solo album? Too many to choose from....
Somehow a solo album only covering the American Songbook was expected from Keith Jarrett after the all the extremely successful Standards Trio albums on ECM with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette. But the moving story behind how this album became a reality for Jarrett (JazzTimes cover story) makes every one of the these beloved tunes on this excellent CD very special.Jarrett's simple and naked approach with his less-than-usual improvisation to the tunes is beyond believe when he opens with "I Loves You, Porgy" and continues through jazz standards and adds on few surprises like "Shenandoah" and "My Wild Irish Rose" (years since I heard these tunes). In other words many highlights but if I should pick one it must be "Blame It On My Youth/Mediation" where Jarrett ends this lovely tune with a meditative improvisation over the chord structure so beautiful that I had to pinch my arm.
5-0 out of 5 stars Deeply Emotional
The first few moment of listening to Keith Jarrett playing caused such an emotional response, I spent the next hour listening and listening and literally crying from the sheer beauty of his playing. Nothing has touched me quite as deeply. Then when I learned the amazing story behind this CD, I was even more moved to tears.

4-0 out of 5 stars One more review of the singing performances
One more comment regarding the vocal performances: I agree that Christine and the Phantom have weaker voices than the actors from the London cast, but they have one major point in their favor: THEY DON'T HAVE SEVERE INTONATION PROBLEMS!!!
4-0 out of 5 stars An okay rendition of a great musical
I'm a big fan of the music of Phantom of the Opera but I can't say that the music portion of this movie really blows me away.Christine I like but the phantom I found to be breathy and not as into his part as he could have been.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sizzling
I have seen and heard MANY different companies perform Phantom of the Opera on stage. All were Amazing... During you felt all of the emotions compassion, pity, envy, rage etc. BUT Gerard Butler evoked a new emotions never felt by his singing.... passion this sensual quality that makes you stop and say WOW the Phantom is HOT and Sexy. Christine what are you doing choosing Roual When Gerard signs "Point of No Return" you can FEEL the passion and tension in the air.Don't get my wrong Michael Crawford or Brad Little's were well done but because their voices are so different you just don't fell the heat or passion in his version as you do with Gerard's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Collection
This is a terrific collection with a wide range of songs from one of the most spectacular voices the music industry has ever heard. Patsy Cline's gorgeous voice and the emotion she put into her songs makes them heartbreaking to listen to, or if an upbeat song, especially fun to listen to. She just can't be topped. I only wish there were a Patsy Cline Christmas album available. I highly recommend this CD to any Patsy Cline or country music fan. Great selection of hit songs!

3-0 out of 5 stars What a voice.
I just love listening to this old style of music. Patsy Cline has such a pure tone to her voice. I have to remind myself that even though some of these subjects are a little degrading to women it was a different era and it's the lady's voice that I love. I experienced some volume fading and getting louder in few of the songs. But, that's my only complaint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hy Zaret would have loved it.
William Stirrat, AKA Hy Zaret (pen name), who wrote the words to "Unchained Melody", never liked Bobby Hatfield's (Rightous Brothers) version of it becaused he "jazzed it up".So, I think he would have loved the way Barry Manilow sang it on this CD.By the way, for those of you, like me, who always wondered where "Unchained Melody" got its name, it was featured in the now obscure 1955 prison movie "Unchained".It was nominated for Best Song but lost out to another song on this CD "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing".History aside, I like the way Barry Manilow presents these timeless classics. You can tell he is singing them with the feeling and respect they deserve. It's much more than "easy listening". It's a time capsule back to the '50's.

1-0 out of 5 stars Instant cutout.
There is no doubt that Manilow, best known for his longtime association with Bette Midler , is a talentedpianist who could play creative and original music if he desired.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even better than Vol. 1
Volume 2 of the Soundtrack for "Six Feet Under" simply blows Volume 1 out by going a step beyond what its predecessor did. Incorporating a balanced combination of the best of the indie world at the time of its release (Death Cab for Cutie, The Arcade Fire, Interpol, etc.) with a handful of recent classics (Radiohead's "Lucky" and Coldplay's "Rush of Blood to the Head") and an opening track by Nina Simone from 1965, the album brings great memories from an even greater TV show that we will miss sorely.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Soundtrack
Nice CD. I always liked the effort the producers upt into choosing music for the show, as music helps immensely in creating emotions. All of the other reviewers' comments were right on the money with regards to this album, and I am happy I own both volumes of this soundtrack (Wish each season would have released a collection, but I guess that hardline aficionados can piece together their own favorites...) Sorry to see the show end, but alas, Everything Does.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasently Suprised
I am a new fan to Sarah Brightman, this is the first CD I have purchased, I am delighted to say I LOVE IT,, her voice is haunting and the lyrics are amazing... I am now a Sarah Brightman FAN... Great CD I higly recommend it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this !
This is an amazing cd. Sarah Brightman is a great vocalist, who already is a household name in classical music. There are good songs and I finally found the song i was looking for- from the Secret Garden "Anytime, Anywhere." It's an amazing song and alsoAva Maria. A good song. Some other opera singers don't really know how to make their voices pure... as they grow up into woman. But, Sarah has accomplished this role in making her voice still pure, but amazing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fails to impress...
Now I'm as much a Sarah Brightman fan as the next guy; thought she was terrific vocally as "Phantom"'s Christine.Listening to this CD helps me to remember that was *20* years ago. What Sarah lacks in vocal control and tonality she makes up for in breathiness and her infamous "swooping" up into high notes.

4-0 out of 5 stars I never realized that I liked this band!
I just saw them at the KY state fair with Rick Springfield a few days ago. I didn't realize how many of their songs that I knew, but didn't know who had recorded them.
4-0 out of 5 stars Firefall Greatest Hits
If you are a Firefall fan you will love this CD. It has all the best hits from their song catalog. I enjoy listening to this CD from beginning to end. There are 18 tracks on this CD making it well worth the price, a must for your CD collection. I would give this CD five stars, but I reserve that kind of recognition for truly exceptional things.

3-0 out of 5 stars Best Firefall Compilation Out There!
If you are into very soft "rock" or are into Adult Oriented Rock of the 70's and early 80's, then you'll just love this band. All the tracks here have been remastered by Rhino and so you know you're going to get good sound quality: all 18 of them!Good value for money and worth the 3 stars for "Always", "You Are the Woman" and "Just Remember I Love You" with the rest of the tracks being rather forgettable.Good harmonies over mellow, soft rock but one can't help but think that there were so many others out there during their time who have done that particular genre a whole lot more justice than this band.I'd say Firefall is maybe two thirds as good as Orleans with regards the quality of their songs and maybe only a third as good as Ambrosia, Player etc.Still, if you are into this band, this version is probably the best overall best of compilation that's out there. ... Lions and tigers and bears, the yellow brick road, gamboling midgets, warnings scrawled high above by a skywriting witch: No movie ever imprinted itself on young imaginations or endured in adult memory more than MGM's classic 1939 musical, and no movie score ever hooked as forcefully into our collective cultural memory. This exemplary soundtrack finally treats this deserved classic to a thoughtful and comprehensive rendering (an even more detailed, expanded version was also released simultaneously as a deluxe box) that confirms the enduring power of Harold Arlen's original music and E. Y. "Yip" Harburg's lyrics. On film, the songs unreeled as a mixture of discreet songs and multi-themed medleys with frequent reprises, a presentation preserved here, epitomized in the "Munchkinland Musical Sequence." If not as concise as Bobby McFerrin's legendary, hilarious concert compression of the entire musical story, this telling of Read more

The CD came promptly. My grandchildren, children and I had a great time listening to it without watching the DVD and going through all of the scenes. We are very happy with our purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating, just like the movie
It is true that CDs created from antquated recording equipment show their age. This one is no exception, but the sound to me is still quite good and it is surprising that the production turned out so well.
4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Over the Rainbow
This version of The Wizard of Oz proves three things: 1) MGM may well have been the Tiffany's of movie studios back in the 30's, but their sound department was pretty primitive; 2) Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg were a stupendous team and Herbert Stothart (MGM's music director) was a darned good arranger; 3) Judy Garland was a miracle.

I used this DVD to teach the kids a song from Vacation bible school, and had a bunch of people ask me where I bought it.It was just what I needed.

2-0 out of 5 stars BEFORE it was a musical...
BEFORE it was a musical it was a cantata with orchestra and children's choir. Slicked, glossed, and cheesy, the broadway versions all fall short of the original, concise masterpiece recorded on the ONE AND ONLY ORIGINAL version alas, out of print and available only on vinyl. As overblown broadway versions go, this 1992 version may be the best. But, for those of us who grew up listening to the original, the broadway versions do nothing but disappoint. The Joseph Consortium version of the original cantata recording included Tim Rice singing the role of Pharoah and was released by Scepter Records. Where the rights may be now for re-release, who knows?

I've been looking to replace it on CD..

Tony Bennett has a typical lack of effusiveness about the kudos of his seven-decade career, but he does reportedly display an inscribed picture from a longtime colleague and fellow saloon singer in his Manhattan apartment. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Recording I Have Ever Heard
The orchestrations are breathtaking. The cast members act, sing, and play instruments! What talent! Michael Cerveris is phenomenal! Patti LuPone is amusing and wonderful as always as Sweeney's pie shop sweetie. Manoel Felciano is heartbreaking as Tobey, performing the best rendition of "Not While I'm Around" that i have ever heard. Lauren Molina is equally talented as she brings a delicate, yet exotic soprano to the beautiful character of Joanna. I am so happy that i had the pleasure of seeing this in New York and meeting this ever-so-talented cast. How come they left out some of the dialogue/music towards the end? They did not include the Parlor Songs or Tobey in the bakehouse on this recording. Oh well, the music they do give us is positively spectaculer. I love Sweeney Todd!!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite right
This is a very uneven recording. I have not seen this production, and am a big fan of the original produciton and album. I think a minimalist produciton can work, and I quite like the musical arrangements which tend to allow the voices to stand out. Sweeney himself is remarkable. Most of the rest of the cast does well too. But Lupone disappoints as Mrs. Lovett -- she sounds flat and monotonic. Bamford also sounds like he is on way too strong medication. And what's with a female Pirelli?
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect.
Sweeney Todd is the greatest musical that has ever been made, this cast is the best that I've ever heard, Sondheim is the greatest lyricist and composer of musical theatre, and the revival production on Broadway was the single greatest thing I've seen on Broadway in the past 10 years. Cerveris owns the role of Sweeney, it really is going to be the crowning achievment in his impressive career, he's that good in it. Lupone is a goddess of musical theatre as usual, and supporting players like Alex Gemignani and Mano Felciano are standouts among an exceptionally talented cast.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very beautiful renditions of film themes...
I was especially pleased to hear her perform versions of several film themes.Track 9, based on the cue "Rupert Bear" from Gabriel Yared's score for "The English Patient", and Track 10, based on the cue "On Earth As It Is in Heaven" from Ennio Morricone's score for "The Mission".Being both a fan of film scores and Sarah Brightman, these lovely tracks stand as my favorites from "Eden".

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite possibly Brightman's best
Having only discovered the world of classical crossover this year, it wasn't long before Sarah Brightman, the English soprano who crashed the scene with her career defining performance in Llyod Weber's "The Phantom Of The Opera," registered under my radar.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Idol... Sarah Brightman and her journey through Eden
This album speaks of the soul of Sarah Brightman. She has a soul like no other. Her albums tend to come in themes and Eden's theme is hauntingly beautiful. Sarah's best songs on Eden are Eden, Dust in the Wind, and Anytime, Anywhere. Buy Eden. You will not be disappointed. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This recording was produced more than 40 years ago, only in mono, but from the day it was released it was a deserved phenomenon. It out-grossed the mega-hit show for months, and it still holds the record for the most weeks as a Billboard Top 40 album: 292. The reasons are many. Start with the 20-year-old Julie Andrews in peak voice, singing no fewer than eight sensational Lerner and Loewe songs, soaring most memorably to high C in "I Could Have Danced All Night." Rex Harrison perfected the art of talk-singing in a clutch of equally captivating numbers written especially for his voice, of which the most indelibly delivered is "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face." And Stanley Holloway brought the best English music-hall style to an eager American audience with "A Little Bit of Luck" and "Get Me to the Church on Time." There were no scene-changers in Frederick Loewe's best score, and Alan Jay Lerner managed to fashion his libretto and lyrics so close to the language of George Bernard Shaw (on whose play Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I've grown accustomed to this disc.
I really don't like show tunes that much.I listen to rock, blues, some jazz and I have a few classical favorites, but I'm not a show tune person. So, I'm crankin' my vinyl LP version of this very recording right now and I'm loving it (or lovering it) despite myself!
4-0 out of 5 stars My Fair Lady 1956
My family had this as an LP when I was young.Great performances!Too bad Julie Andrews was not in the movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the Best
What can you say about MFL that hasn't already been said. Sublime, perfect, classic. This is still the definitive recording of the show, and no one has ever come close to the original cast. Sadly, while the movie is wonderful, had Warner Bros. used Andrew's it might have been one of the greatest film musicals of all time. And while Audrey Hepburn gamely gives it her all, Andrew's had clearly made Eliza Doolittle her own, and she would have been uncomparable on film, and raised the level of the entire movie. Well, the rest is history, Andrews went on to be one of the biggest movie stars of the 60's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too beatiful for words
I'm from the Netherlands, and just got back from my trip to NYC. I saw the show twice, both times at the first row (had to stand in line for six hours both times) and I was totally amazed.
5-0 out of 5 stars The color purple
I'd seen the show on broadway and just had to have the cd.it's cheaper on amazon than it is to buy it in new york at the production.

3-0 out of 5 stars Has some great music
I saw "The Color Purple" on a recommendation of a friend and I was presently surprised with the show. The show has some great music (I am here, The Color Purple, Our Prayer, What About Love) but it lacks something. The show feels slow at times and has a tough time picking up steam. The cast is wonderful and extrememy talented but I don't think that the CD really captures the experience of the show in the theater.

Editorial Review

Sincere but not too sincere, cute but not gorgeous, and smart enough to know to steal from the very best, former skateboard pro Matt Costa signed to surfer Jack Johnson's label on the strengths of some very workman-like pop songs and a smooth, appealing voice. Goldilockses of the world are bound to find Costa's unassuming songs just right--and if his work fails to find its way onto the soundtracks of all the hottest television shows, there is little justice in the world. Costa may croon that "These are the songs that I sing/To make the day better," but these really aren't songs so much as they're rock & roll equations. The dude combines the anglophilic sonority of Belle & Sebastian and Donovan with a taste of Elliott Smith's gorgeous downer vibe, heaping doses of the Beatles thrown in throughout. It's pleasantly chiming enough stuff to be sure: it'll just be far more interesting to see what happens once Costa has worked his way through his influences. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Catchy without losing his heart
These songs are catchy.Real catchy. He writes how he feels and those just happen to be really good songs."Sunshine" burrows a hole into your memory and leaves you a nice gift. Not a bad song on the album. He channels some Johnny Cash, keeps it light with "Sweet Rose" and makes you wish for winter time with "Cold December."
3-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
Matt Costa has got the talent and chops and this CD is enjoyable. He does need to break the mold a bit, however. There is nothing earth-shattering here - - just good folk/pop that is nice on the ears.Next time, I hope he tires to be a bit more original.

5-0 out of 5 stars Costa/Johnson?
I have read some reviews comparing Matt Costa to Jack Johnson. The two artists are not comparable. Each has their own style independent of the other."Songs We Sing" is an excellent album, an instant favorite. ... Read more
