2-0 out of 5 stars 2 Great Singers.12 Great Songs.1 Ho-hum Album.
I don't get the politics of Tony Bennett saying "yes, dear" to KD Lang at the end of the 1st number, but sad to say, the whole album seems an overproduced mistake, including sappy saxophone interludes and treacly high-pitched violin countermelodies.
3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks punch
I am a huge Bennett fan and have enjoyed this cd (although K.D. Lang?s voice doesn?t impress me that much.)That said, someone recently loaned me the cd of Louis Armstrong singing the same songs and it had a totally different feel.Truly Armstrong is inimitable. His versions are full of pizzazz, mischievousness and just plain fun.I?m sorry to say that after hearing the originals I found the Bennett/Lang rather mediocre.

I loved this c.d. Tony and k.d. have terrific voice control and they complimented each other on the duet tracts.

5-0 out of 5 stars The very best and beyond!
In or around 1969,Richard Carpenter and his now-deceased sister Karen got a contract with A&M Records. For nine solid years, the pair have had at least one recording on hit parade each year. This is a great collection of easy listening songs in pop form. Many easy listening and adult contemporary radio stations in America and other countries play the Carpenters' recordings. CLOSE TO YOU sounds undoubtedly beautiful. The trumpet heard on the track may be Herb Alpert's(he and Jerry Moss founded the A&M label). TICKET TO RIDE is a Lennon-McCartney classic in a style all the Carpenters' own. From 1973's NOW AND THEN are SING,JAMBALAYA and YESTERDAY ONCE MORE. TOP OF THE WORLD,GOODBYE TO LOVE and SUPERSTAR are OK. I love RAINY DAYS AND MONDAYS,a hit from 1971. Karen sings,"Rainy days and Mondays always get me down.". No one could have blamed her,I have to admit. PLEASE MR. POSTMAN was made famous by the Marvelettes in 1961 and later covered by the Beatles, unbelievably. 1977's PASSAGES brought another great song,ALL YOU GET FROM LOVE IS A LOVE SONG. From that same album is the somewhat comical CALLING ALL OCCUPANTS OF INTERPLANETARY CRAFT. From 1981's MADE IN AMERICA,Karen,by this time a married woman, delivers her usual gorgeous vocals on TOUCH ME WHEN WE'RE DANCING,later covered by the country band Alabama. She and her brother also give us another cover of a Marvelettes hit,BEACHWOOD 45789. Sadly,Karen spent her final years battling anorexia and complications from the disease claimed her in April 1983 at age 33. Richard moved on to a solo career which was disappointing compared to the one with his sister. The other songs are great. I dedicate this item to the memory of Karen(1950-1983).

5-0 out of 5 stars Just like before, It's Yesterday Once More ...
When I was young I'd listen to the radio, waitin' for my favorite songs, When they played I'd sing along, it made me smile.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Voice As Fresh As Today
This set was released in 2004 and is the best compilation of Carpenters material I have in my collection. All the hits are included as well as material I've never heard before eg. 'Make Believe It's Your First Time', 'I Need To Be In Love', etc. Each and every one of these 40 tunes are gems. This is not a set of cd's to be downloaded because you would miss out on the liner notes and history of each song as told by Richard Carpenter. He seems very proud of the artistry of him and his sister and so he should be. A must have set for Carpenter fans. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Years after the '90s, the decade will be remembered for the rise of pianist-vocalist Diana Krall. Simply put, this British Columbian-born artist is one of the most engaging musicians to emerge from the heap of scat-happy singers high on pyrotechnics, but short on poetry. Stamped with the imprimatur of the Nat King Cole trio and blessed by her apprenticeship with the late West Coast piano giant Jimmy Rowles, Krall simply sings songs the way they're supposed to be sung: with devotion to the lyric and with attention to the groove. This CD finds Krall in familiar company with compatriots Russell Malone (on guitar), bassist John Clayton, drummers Lewis Nash and Jeff Hamilton, and vibraphonist (and former Bill Evans associate) Larry Bunker--all supported by Johnny Mandel's svelte string arrangements. Krall and crew take Irving Berlin's chestnut "Let's Face the Music and Dance" and the Sinatra-signatured "I've Got You Under My Skin" south to Brazil via a sexy bossa nova. Malone's lush guitar accompaniment complements Krall's heartfelt delivery on "When I Look in Your Eyes," and Michael Franks's "Popsicle Toes" dances courtesy of Hamilton's drum work. "Devil May Care," "East of the Sun (and West of the Moon)," The Best Thing for You," and the stridish "I Can't Give You Anything but Love" groove with a minimum of waste, while Mandel's simpatico strings steal the show on "I'll String Along with You," "Pick Yourself Up," and "Do It Again." All of which further illuminate the cool fire from this fine gift from North of the Border. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Krall Away While There's Still Time
Diana Krall's popularity is not hard to understand, she's easy on the eyes and possesses a fine voice - rich, round, and polished. But that's where the good news ends. The selection of material and the narcoleptic Bossa-Nova-on-the-rocks arrangements combine to create a CD that is nothing less than a love song to Darvon, in fact, inside industry sources maintain that the entire CD was recorded in the frozen food section of a supermarket late at night in order to eliminate the middle man.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just about totally pleasing for 54 minutes...
I'd heard a few Krall tracks on the radio, and saw her a time or two on TV, but this is the first Diana CD I've purchased. I did not even realize that this release was seven years old. I was spending a gift card at a big discount store, and this one was the only Krall CD on the shelf. I knew eight of the 13 songs, so I took it home. And played it. And played it again. And again. What a nice way to do laundry on a Saturday afternoon, with the lovely Diana for company. Her voice is great, the arrangements are interesting, and her "Diana Krall Trio/Quartet" of 1999 sounds fantastic. If you like romantic jazz vocals of leisurely tempo, you can't go wrong with this item.

Recorded at the historic Olympia Theatre in Paris in November 2001, this is Diana Krall's first live album. Backed by her quicksilver comboof bassist John Clayton, drummer Jeff Hamilton, and guitarist JohnPisano (on some tracks), Krall's jazz heritage comes through loud and clear on this programof standards, ballads, and bossa novas. On Peggy Lee's "I Love Being Herewith You," Bob Dorough's "Devil May Care," and Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon," Krall's snappy, postbop piano playing shows off her debt to Nat "King" Cole and Jimmy Rowles. Her cool contralto vocals are illuminated by the Orchestre Symphonique Europeen, under the direction of Alan Broadbent, as well as the London Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Claus Ogerman. Krall's deep take on Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" is a great choice for an encore, and the CD concludes with Billy Joel's "Just theWay You Are" (a studio track from a film called Read more

Love it or hate it. If you want to test your speakers for mid range replication. This is the CD to have. Raw vocals with all the flaws and high points. I love it. Mid range is great. If you are evaluating speakers, don't miss this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Warning: A review by a non-jazz fan
I should start this review by saying that I am not a jazz fan.I like a little bit every now and then, but I could never build a huge jazz collection.I listen to rock and other popular music-- everything from the Beatles to the Clash to the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Tori Amos. However, I came across this Diana Krall CD when I became interested in jazz music thanks to Joni Mitchell.Joni's albums of the '70s are heavily influenced by jazz.I loved them all, so I began looking for other female vocal jazz performers. It was in this way that I stumbled upon Diana Krall's "Live in Paris."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great First CD
Nothing at all like boy-band CDs (InSync, Backstreet Boys, etc like editorial compared it to). While some of the songs are over-processed and don't allow Clay's strong, clear, and beautiful voice to shine through enough, it is overall a very good CD. It has some catchy tunes on it.His second CD, Merry Christmas With Love, allows his wonderful voice to shine through even more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clay Aiken never disappoints
Clay Aiken has a voice which is unique and inviting. It is wonderful to find, in today's market, an actual singer of songs. Clay's voice needs no gimmicks, no enhancements, and no engineering miracles to improve his sound. His voice is pure and his range, tone, and phrasing are impeccable!

I'm from Melbourne Australia and first heard Invisible on the radio (on the US top 40) and fell inlove with the song. Bobby Darin was one of the most personally complex and unpredictable artists of the rock era. Indeed, it's hard to find another major artist who reinvented himself with the deceptive ease and overwhelming success chronicled on this 20-track highlight disc. After scoring three lively and considerable Top 10 successes in the space of a year in the late 1950s ("Splish Splash," "Queen of the Hop," "Dream Lover"), Darin traded in his teen idol sweater 'n' slacks for a tux and tie (evidence suggests he considered rock a passing fad!) and went gunning for Sinatra and the Rat Pack. The immediate results were the Grammy-winning No. 1 legend "Mack the Knife" (adapted from Kurt Weill's "Moritat" in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bobby Darin - They don't make them like that anymore!
I really love this CD, it is actually the 2nd Bobby Darin CD that I purchased. He sings clearly, with enthusiam, and a great big band sound in the background. You hear these trumpets, and a piano, things that some of today's bands just don't use.It is really great. When I am in a bad mood, all I need is a little Bobby Darin music to fix that problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful CD Collection!
I think this is a beautiful CD to have. The songs are the versions (as far as I can hear) from the radio. The cover is dazzling with the scarlet red.The story in the liner notesis detailed. The price for such a high quality, brand-new collection is more than reasonable. After seeing it and playing it, I get this feeling that everyone, even if they do not call themselves a fan of Bobby Darin, should put this CD collection on their shelf for an eternal reference to him.(Or for as least for as long as a CD will maintain its integrity.)I bought it for a couple hit singles, and wish I was more open minded to have bought it before I had that myopic idea.

5-0 out of 5 stars For four songs
These are the Darin songs I enjoyed in my college days, 'Mack the Knife' 'Somewhere Beyond the Sea' "If I were a carpenter.' Darin had an upbeat strength in his voice, and a kind of youthful arrogance. Before these he had sung pretty low- grade teen hits. But with these songs he really hit his stride, and created top-notch music.

5-0 out of 5 stars A KILLER soundtrack--but who says that murder's not an art ???
This CD soundtrack of the movie Chicago gives us great music written by Kander and Ebb. The musical arrangements are masterfully written and executed; and the lyrics to each song are clever, too. The overall effect is a fun CD to listen to--even if you haven't seen the film! Some of the bonus material is very different from the Kander and Ebb style and depending on your tastes you may like this or not.

It has great music from the Chicago Movie that I love to play over and over. The only weird thing about it is Queen Latifa's strange remix on the end of the CD. I let the CD play till then and then push skip. It's too close to Rap style for me.

In the late 1950s and the '60s, country music was essentially a singles medium. This album, first released in 1967 and reissued on compact disc in 1988, collects Patsy Cline's biggest hits--all of them from the country singles market--including "Walkin' After Midnight," "Sweet Dreams (Of You)," "Crazy," and "I Fall to Pieces." Producer Owen Bradley surrounds Cline's full-throated, emotionally charged vocals with lush, sophisticated arrangements that set the standard for Nashville's "countrypolitan" sound. Before Shania Twain found a new (though not necessarily improved) way to combine country and pop in the 1990s, this was the top-selling country album of all time by a female artist. Read more

If there is one musical genere I dislike, its Country. Give me some Bluegrass, yet Country music just doesnt reach me. But then there is Patsy Cline, whos voice alone is absolutly breath-taking. Even though these tracks were mostly recorded in the 1960s,I still think that she is one of the best Country singers of all time. Some of the material is a bit dated, as evidence with a little doo-wop thrown in, yet these are a great collection of songs. I encourage people to see to put down thier Britney Spears, Christine Agularia, and Jo-LO CD's, and try on some Patsy Cline for a real amazing voice. No, this isnt going to want to make you groove, but its a voice that has to be heard. This one is a true classic in any music genere. ... Read more

Editorial Review

As one of the prime movers in that select sub-group of white folk-pop singers who have found a home in Brazilian style (Kenny Rankin is a "similar urban AOR rival," to quote a customer review), contemporary jazz artist Michael Franks has aged pretty well--if not all that gracefully. As a guy who resorts to couplets like "The clothes on my back/Are too Pasternak," he probably shouldn't be waxing philosophical about how "feeble" and "pedantic" critics are ("The Critics Are Never Kind," a musical-derived number onwhich Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Degas commiserate). Franks also makes music his subject too often for his own good, celebrating "The Cool School" in self-congratulatory fashion and the first time he heard "Take Five"--he says Dave Brubeck's beloved version, though his use of bleating smooth jazz saxist Eric Marienthal to evoke the great Paul Desmond makes you wonder. But his vocals are breezy and intimate, and the instrumental settings provided by a cast including guitarist Chuck Loeb and keyboardist David Sancious are attractive without being too slick. Fans whose "inner harmony always turns blue in the end" won't be able to resist the wistful pull of the songs. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Musical poetry in motion.
My love of Michael Franks and Brazilian rhythms has never been in jeopardy. The thought of Michael merging his sublime style with this beautiful bossa sound was something that I was seriously looking forward to hearing. This is indeed a marriage made in heaven, and a pairing that I hope will be showcased more often than not in the future. His admiration for the late, great Antonio Carlos Jobim, and his touching 1995 album, "Abandoned Garden" flirted with all things Latin, and it is here where he has definitively rendezvoused in Rio.
3-0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this
I've long been a Franks fan, owning pretty much all of his work, but the last few CDs have been profoundly mediocre.Rendezvous in Rio feels like a downhill slide to me with its cliched Braziliana and uninspired lyrics ("Me, I'm a child of the cool school"??).To me, "Songbird" redeems the CD.Sadly, Franks seems best at eulogies of late.

Linda Ronstadt, in all her southwestern beauty and charisma, is by far one of the most talented interpreters of a varied array of music, and she makes it known to the whole world in this fantastic collection of songs she has worked through in her career. The only dissapointment is the plain fact that the collection does not include Linda's well known version of "Desperado", but such a motley mixture of pitch and vocals requits the defecit. From the countrytime composition "Love Is A Rose" to rockin` "When Will I Be Loved", from the soulful rendition of "Blue Bayou" to new age "Winter Light", it is patent that this CD truly does contain "The Very Best Of Linda Ronsdadt".

I went to see this play, where we live! It was just fantastic! One of my friends from school was in it! I just listening to the music and singing along! I recommend it to anyone who loves musicals!

5-0 out of 5 stars It gets the whole family singing and dancing
I bought this CD because my daughter was involved in a local production of Seussical The Musical. We play the CD all the time at home and in the car and the whole family dance and sing along to the songs. It gets you moving without realising it. It's a fantastic way to get to know some Dr Seuss stories and made me realise the importance of imagination in children, something that seems lacking nowadays. It's a beautiful story and sung wonderfully by all the performers. I highly recommend this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Devine by Ms. Devine Herself
This album of Bette Midler's Greatest Hits is just that, plain and simple. You cannot play it enough, as she is truly one of the most talented singers / actress / and gifted person on the face of the earth.Rarely do I feel the emotion of anyone's performance in voice that is as moving as from her. This album gives you just a taste of the range of talent this true star really has!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Divine Miss M's greatest hits and even better songs
I had the opportunity to see Bette Midler is her first concert in like a decade after she took off a whole bunch of years to get married and have a kid.I am here to tell you that there is nobody who works harder or put out more on stage than the Divine Miss M.We had to wait about half an hour for the show to actually begin and as soon as she descended on a swing and tried to start singing we stood up and cheered for several minutes.I kept track and including medleys Bette did parts of 48 songs, including an entire segment devoted to "Gypsy" (which she had just finished taping). She did most of the songs that appear on this hits collection, but the show stopper in my opinion was when she closed the first act doing "Delta Dawn."I will also never forget when she launched into a string of dirty jokes and how we all groaned when she started the last one ("Mother Teresa is taking a shower..."), because we knew it was going to be really, really bad.
4-0 out of 5 stars Experience the Divine
Although I bought the album particularly for 3 of my favorite Bette Midler songs, I was also treated to a few other good ones. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars "Do I like it?No, not much"Really
Ironically, the greatest problem The Vogues had was that their music was not in vogue. Although their breakthrough hit was in 1965, they belonged firmly to a previous era, that of 1950s doo-wop.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love These Guys
I started listening to this CD last night and was immediately transported back to the 1960's when guy groups had wonderful voices that blended perfectly well together without benefit of studio/technological enhancements. Each song is beautiful especially their version of "My Special Angel" I kept hitting the replay button. A great addition to my collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vogues - 'Greatest Hits' (Rhino)
Eighteen tracks of The Vogues trademark and near impossible to beat 'style' of tight beautiful, harmony carefree&innocent pop. Some would simply tag it as doo-wop.Didn't realize they had eight(8)actual hits here in the U.S.Along with their two better known tunes "Five O'Clock World" and "You're The One",I liked hearing "Land Of Milk And Honey","Please Mr.Sun" and "Turn Around,Look At Me" possibly for the first time.I happen to recall when The Drew Carey Show had "Five O'Clock World" as the opening theme,I hadn't heard that song in like twenty years,at least. The Vogue's original line-up was:Chuck Basko,Don Miller,Hugh Geyer and Bill Burkette.Apparently, there is at least one 'reunion group' out there on the oldies circuit masquerading as 'The Vogues'.Man,don't you HATE it when musicians pull that?Should appeal to fans of the Four Seasons,The Tokens,Gerry&The Pacemakers and early Beach Boys. A should-have. ... Read more
