With his eternally boyish tenor and cheery romantic outlook, John Pizzarelli is a stylistic world apart from Frank Sinatra, he of the manly baritone and dark sensual undercurrents. But like his Italian-American forebear, he's a consummate swinger, and he knows how to make a lyric his own. Comprised mostly of tunes written for the Chairman, Read more

Few would dispute that Frank Sinatra was one of the greatest popular singers of the 20th century. His voice had distinct power and majesty, whether he was belting out a swinging dance number or softly crooning a tender ballad. When he was at his height, no one could touch him, and the songs collected on Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Songs from a Timeless Singer
" Old Blue Eyes " is back and better sounding than ever in this 2000 digitally remastered cd of some of Frank Sinatra's most revered and cherished songs. I hope I'm not sounding too much like a commercial , yet it's true. I could pimp this cd forvever. I can be in any kind of mood and atleast two songs off of this packed cd , will suit me perfectly. From " Wee Small Hours " to "Witchcraft" , you'll be tapping your toes , mixing the martini's, calling up the lugs, and kissing the broads. This disc is a sure gas , baby. Hey wait.....I'm starting to sound like him !

Bruce Springsteen once said that Frank Sinatra had "a voice filled with bad attitude, life, beauty, excitement, a nasty sense of freedom, (love making) and a sad knowledge of the ways of the world." I doubt few people could describe Frank's voice better. His voice was rich, capable of expressing the finest of nuances in meaning, vibrant and thrilling all at the same time. Despite the passage of time, Sinatra will always maintain his rightful place amongst the greats in music history.

Dianne Reeves's cool contralto, fronted by a quicksilver combo featuring saxophonist Matt Catingub and pianist Peter Martin, provides the flowing jazz soundtrack to GeorgeClooney's 1950s, film detailing the epic struggle between the legendary TVnewsman Edward R. Murrow and the Communist-baiting Senator Joseph McCarthy.Reeves' delivery is flawless and swinging on these mostly mid-tempo/balladtakes on several timeless classics (including Nat King Cole's "Straighten Upand Fly Right," Duke Ellington's "Solitude," and the bouncy Dinah Washingtonhit "TV is the Thing This Year"). Two other selections, "Pick Yourself Up"and "Too Close for Comfort," dance with a Latin lilt; the loneinstrumental, "When I Fall in Love," is as romantic as they come. 5-0 out of 5 stars Buble is My Generation's Sinatra
Who whould have thought that anybody could ever even come close to Sinatra - much less be his equal?Well, Ole Blue Eyes has met his match in Michael Buble. So rarely does a talent of Buble's caliber come along...he is this generation's answer to Sinatra. Now, if we could only entice him to record a duet(s) with Renee Olstead life would be ideal!Michael not only has an amazing voice but he is truly the best performer I've ever seen...what a wicked combination! 'Caught in the Act' is superb and a definite must have.

I purchased this album just because I love Italian music so much.I did know most of the songs in it, but not the singer. However, I am very happy to have found this recording. It wasa really big surprise to me that he sounded so much like Engelbert Humperdinck, another one of my favorites, when he sang Il Mondo and A Man Without Love.

I loved it! It has all of my favorite music from all of my favorite Disney movies: The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King! Although I have to say I didn't recognize some of the older songs and don't really jump for joy when some of the Mary Poppins songs play, I still really love this classic Cd set!

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter wiggles to this CD
This CD keeps my 10 month-old daughter fully entertained while I take a shower. It's not "jazz" like you might be thinking (abstract, hard to sing to), these are catchy tunes that you have heard many times before. There may be a few you don't know like the great song about potato chips. It's just too cute.I also like the muffin man...it's a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids love it and it won't drive the parents crazy!
We absolutely love the Jazz for Kids CD and we buy it as a gift for all the kiddie birthday parties. My husband and I love it just as much as my two year old and her baby brother. Favorites include Ella Fitzgerald's jazzy "Old MacDonald Had a Farm", "Yes, We Have No Bananas", which my daughter sings all the time with or without the CD, "Rag Mop," and "The Muffin Man". I agree with the previous reviewer that the only thing I'd like better about it is if it were longer! I played it at a baby shower I hosted and it was a hit with all the guests. A great introduction to jazz for kids.

Editorial Review

English singer-pianist Jamie Cullum comes into view as an already heralded jazz-pop artist, signed to a million-pound contract and riding a CD that's already registered double platinum in the UK. The "jazz" label doesn't hang that comfortably on the 24-year-old Cullum--he's more in the mold of polished lounge swingers like Bobby Darin and Buddy Greco and has more in common with, say, Billy Joel (definitely a "New York State of Mind") than any traditional jazz artist you might mention. An ironist who covers both Cole Porter and Radiohead, he's aware of the contradictions that he embodies. Those contradictions drive the title track as Cullum's lyrics plumb "twentysomething" uncertainties ("Maybe move back home and pay off my loans/Working nine to five answering phones") while moving to a mock-primitive chanted riff that's pure '50s hip. What surprises most is Cullum's emotional and musical range, and the way he combines methods to create depth and complexity. "Blame it on My Youth" is delivered with the heartfelt delicacy of Chet Baker, while his reading of "The Wind Cries Mary" suggests that Jimi Hendrix might have just about invented smooth jazz. "I Could Have Danced All Night" explodes with playful energy and creativity, launched with scat singing over a rhythm pounded out on drums and piano wood. Cullum has energy and talent to burn, plus a postmodern knack for layering idioms that signals a welcome direction for jazz-pop. As "Lover, You Should've Come Over" attests, he can also project an emotional intensity that breaks through the clever arrangements. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST YOUNG ARTISTS
Jamie Cullum, in my opinion, is one of the best young artists around right now. And, Twentysomething is the best of his three CD's that he has released. If you have never experienced his music before, listen to a few tracks. You will think you are listening to a guy who has been around the block a few times and has been playing Vegas piano bars since the Rat Pack days. His songs are of the life experience and show a maturity well beyond his years (he is currently 26 and he was about 24 when he made this album).

5-0 out of 5 stars Pay no attention to operatic snobs
By their own admission robusto sopranos are a dime a dozen and, to compare these divas with Ms Brightman's crystalline coloratura is akin to faulting a woodland sprite because she's not an eagle. Forget that her voice is more than adequate to rattle chandeliers at the farthest reaches of any opera house -- when she wants to; let's see any of the fat ladies spin out the gossamer thread of an excruciatingly delicate ballad with such purity and numinous emotion that it gently sneaks into the farthest reaches of the tenderest heart, unleashing tears and igniting waves of ecstasy along the spine. I think there's room for such rare artistry in this world.

2-0 out of 5 stars An acquired taste
Since my original review, I have had to come back and revise it as I must humbly state that Sarah appears to be an acquired taste of sorts; meaning, my initial impression of her album was, well, shall we say, less than positive (see below). However, I soon found myself playing her CD over and over again, and have come to appreciate and actually enjoy this album. Hate to admit it but I just ordered 2 more of her CDs! ok..ok. I was wrong. Lastly, I dont see where I can change the ititial rating so..sorry Sarah!

This is undoubtedly my favorite CD of the last decade and definitely Sarah Brightman's best effort to date! Her duets with Andrea Bocelli and Jose Cura are outstanding!I especially love 'O mio babbino caro', Alleluja', and 'La Wally'. A meeting of two over-the-top pop minds was said a few years ago to have happened. If work between chest-pounding pop balladeer Celine Dion and legendarily eccentric producer Phil Spector hadn't been aborted in its early stages, fans of the Canadian superstar might have heard her best, most interesting music. As it is, Dion has shown herself game for a challenge, notably in a collaboration with Meat Loaf svengali Jim Steinman on the offbeat opus "It's All Coming Back to Me Now." Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars She's one of the best...
Celine is one of my favorite singers. She has got a powerful voice few others can match.Plus, I like that she is not sleazy in appearance and raunchy on record. That has probably lost her some success here in this century, when sleaze and raunch is mainstream, but she is really better than that. She is more of an old-fashioned diva anyway, and that's how I like her:talent, not image.

Even in the face of epochal success, it's tempting to ponder what Barbra Streisand might have accomplished had she not spread herself across so many diverse entertainment media; so much ambition, so little time. This collection of 19 Streisand duets chronicles collaborations with Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland at one end of the scale and Don Johnson at the other. It finds the singer dabbling--if, as her bluesy miscue with Ray Charles on "Crying Time" argues, not necessarily triumphing--in styles she largely eschewed elsewhere in her career. Still, her unlikely collaborations with Barry Gibb ("Guilty," "What Kind of Fool") and Donna Summer ("No More Tears (Enough Is Enough") during the disco era scored her some of the biggest successes of her career, ample proof that with the right chemistry, Streisand could be as powerful a pop music chameleon as she was a diva. New recordings with veteran Barry Manilow (the warm, low-key "I Won't Be the One to Let You Go") and Josh Groban (David Foster's overwrought "All I Know of Love") supplement recordings that stretch from the '60s kitsch-a-go-go of Harold Arlen's "Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead" across five decades of Streisand's unparalleled career. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars More Suffering For Your Money
If only they had this CD to work with at Guanatamo and Abu Ghraib, traditional methods of torture would be unnecessary. As always, Ms. Streisand brings her overwrought, unctuous smarm to the proceedings, giving schmaltz a bad name, and squeezing every drop of melodrama out of the sickly sweet material that seems to find its way to her with the inevitably of swallows returning to Capistrano. But here's the exciting part. Not only does your entertainment dollar purchase 19 different degradations of all things musical by Barbara, you also get to hear her team up with a gaggle of equally horrible - and even a few more horrible - singers.
5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE A DUET
Duets! Wonderful duets. A few of my favorite singers have Duet Albums out...Frank Sinatra and Barbra. I gave the CD a 5 stars. I have many favorites on it and two new ones. Look at the artist!! How could you not want this CD?? You cannot go wrong with Josh Groban and Babs. A timeless song by Neil Diamond and her, "You Don't Bring Me Flowers"... Barry Gibb "Guilty"..."What Kindof Fool"...and Don Johnson, better than you think. Barry Manilow...they are great together, better than I thought they would be. A real oldie treasure with Judy Garland. Remember Babs on Judy's show?

Was it homesickness that compelled longtime Los Angeles resident k.d. lang to fashion her one-woman campaign for north-of-the-border nationalism, or just plain good sense? All Canadian content has long been a mainstay of the Canadian Broadcasting System, but few have selected their material with such a fine hand and a high aesthetic. The expatriate singer has taken great pains to create a sophisticated homage to her Canadian roots, elegantly reinterpreting 11 songs penned by some of her more illustrious countrymen (and women) such as Jane Siberry, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Leonard Cohen. The idiosyncratic chanteuse turns Cohen's "Bird on a Wire" into an aching monochromatic lament, exploring new tributaries of pain that didn't exist in the original, while recasting Neil Young's "Helpless" into a haunting anthem of memory and comfort, all the while sounding anything but helpless. A gorgeous love letter to her brethren, complete with an intelligent and understated orchestration. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of Disneys Best!
So Disney has a tendency to take basic ideas and make them astheticly wonderful, but the real musical theater aspect is lost. Luckily, Aida does not fall in that category. The only main artistic license that Disney took with "Aida" was making her form Nubia (shes from a different country in the opera) so they could play the whole race card. That aside, I love this musical. The Music is great, the lyrics are great, I listened to it non stop when I first got it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. My favorite songs would be "The Gods Love Nubia" and "Written in The Stars."

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad... Not good...
One major reason to buy this CD is the EXCELLENT cast, Sherie Renee Scott, Heather Headly, Adam Pascal, but the score is lacking. There are a few good songs that make it into my favorites but the rest seem to be just fillers, I would buy the four good songs off of iTunes and leave the rest to be undiscovered.
5-0 out of 5 stars Aida is definitely worth buying
I became a "Renthead" as soon as I heard the music, and immediately fell in love with the voices of Adam Pascal and Idina Menzel. I heard about "Aida", and how Adam was in it, and how Idina had done it at one point, too, so I figured, "Why not?" So I tried it. And I'm really glad I did. Not only is Adam's rocker voice amazing, Elton John and Tim Rice really outdid themselves. "Aida" is a lot like "The Lion King", which was also really successful. At first I thought that I would be really biased against Sherie Rene Scott because she plays the part that Idina had. I was afraid I would totally blow off her voice, going, "It's not Idina. Whatever." But although she is not Idina, she is really good in her own way, and I think her voice is very beautiful and has a very strong tone. Then, I had heard so much about the "phenomenal" Heather Headley, but I have to say, I was somewhat non-impressed. I was waiting for this voice to totally blow me away, but I found her voice kind-of sharp and rough at times, not like the PLEASINGLY jagged voice of Adam, or the smooth liquidity of Sherie Rene. But even though I didn't think she had the best performance by far, this is still a very good buy. If you like uplifting Pop/Rock music, and beautiful love ballads, you will love "Aida". ... Editorial Review

The voice of Edith Piaf carries with it perhaps more national identity than that of any other recorded artist in the world. Tiny, frail, and tragic in her life, Piaf brought French identity to the rest of the world in a way that was understandable to all. Known as "the Little Sparrow" in her country, her voice was strong, bold, and passionate, even as she grew more infirm. The archetypical torch singer, she had massive popular success with songs like "Milord," "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien," and "La Vie, L'Amour," included here with 18 other classics. While this is a great compilation of some of her best material, the complete lack of enclosed notes or biographical material may frustrate those not familiar with her fascinating career. However, the work of one of the most original songbirds of all time speaks loud and clear for itself. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So good it is sometimes hard to play.
I have had this as a CD about 10 years, and had tapes previously, and lps previous. This and most other Piaf recordings I have owned is so good that it is sometimes hard to play. You are afraid you will never get it out of the CD player or hear anything else because it is so wonderful. This is a good introduction to Piaf's large body of work and to French songs of the middle of the 20th Century.
5-0 out of 5 stars Piaf Pleases!
The music from this CD takes me back to when I listened to Edith in the 1960's while stationed in Germany. The quality if grand. The service in purchasing the CD was easy andwithout a hitch. Thank you very much.

Editorial Review

Barbra Streisand's bravado made her one of the 1960s' overnight sensations. This 40-cut compendium traces her recording career from early tracks that frequently relay her subtlety to often impressive accommodations with soft rock and still later vibrato-fests that find her taxing the limits of performer's ego and listeners' ears. The narrative is one of direct, sometimes showy, emotion giving way to empty displays of technique. By 1983's icky anthem "A Piece of Sky," Streisand has plowed under the light touches of "Lover, Come Back to Me" and the triumphal Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars ok
I was some what dissapointed in this c d. I like her music she belts out, not the very slow kind. I purched it for the song evergreen, as that was my wedding song. Most of the music is very slow and monitoned.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most bang for your barbra buck!
This is a very generous selection of Barbra's lifelong career hits! My personal favorite is "Somewhere" which uses surround sound in it and it is the most moving version I have ever heard -- it went right through me and brought me to tears. For those fans new and old that want the top of the line valentine, this is it! The sound quality on this double CD is excellent -- even on the older hits. You won't be disappointed. Get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chills down the spine Tears in the eyes
Barbra Steisand is at her best one of the greatest of all singers. She can bring chills down your spine and tears to your eyes.

Editorial Review

The cast recording for the Broadway musical of John Waters's 1988 paean to dance, music, big beautiful women, and integration is a sheer delight. It's wonderfully upbeat all the way through, with a classic feel that's in keeping with the story's setting in the early 1960s. The characters come alive in these songs, from Marissa JaretWinokur's (Tracy Turnblad) opening lines in "Good Morning Baltimore"to the stunningly upbeat finale, "You Can't Stop the Beat." The music is byMarc Shaiman, whose recent projects include Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars HAIRSPRAY a Delight From Start to Finish
I can't recommend HAIRSPRAY enough. The only difficulty with HAIRSPRAY is, there isn't a bad tune in the score; it's impossible to single one out as a showstopper, because in their way, they all are.
1-0 out of 5 stars Did so poorly in Vegas it was pulled out!
Not a surprise for this overrated, squeeky-painful-to-the-ear recording. There are so many other Broadway musical recordings out there that people should check out.

5-0 out of 5 stars High Engergy 60's Fun
This high energy 60's music show is fun and enjoyable to listen to, and makes you want to sing along.Especially energetic are "Go Mamma Go" and "You Can't Stop the Beat!"The vocal arrangements are amazing and true to the 60's genre, and really bring to life the story of a heavy-set teenager who helps teach everyone around her lessons in prejudice and tolerance. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars, original artists
Best of SchoolHouse Rock! Audio CD: Original titles from orignial recordings. Also recommended for those car rides where you can sing along with your kids. My oldest has not been exposed for a week yet, but already can sing several in parts. Rating: 4.5/5
5-0 out of 5 stars Schoolhouse Rock STILL Rocks!
I loved it as a kid, and now my kids love it -- they're going into 2nd grade and kindergarten soon, so neither has any real understanding of government, grammar, etc., but they sing along with most of the songs, and I think when they start to learn these things in school, the songs will make it easier for them. They're fun, they're catchy -- sure there are a few favorites that aren't there, but almost all the other ones will keep you humming through your day :)

Editorial Review

Michael Bennett's 1975 tale of Broadway's gypsies--the chorus dancers--resonated with audiences as few shows ever have, examining with both hilarity and heartbreak the grueling life of ordinary performers always auditioning for an opportunity to be members of a faceless chorus line. And along the way, it picked up the Pulitzer, the New York Drama Critics Award, and nine Tonys, and became the longest-running show in Broadway history. The original cast (eight of whom contributed their real-life memories to the show) included no major stars, but are unmatched on this cast recording of Marvin Hamlisch and Edward Kleban's score, including Priscilla Lopez's poignant "Nothing," Donna McKechnie's yearning dance number "The Music and the Mirror," one of Broadway's most famous torch ballads in "What I Did for Love," and the ultimate high-kicking chorus number, "One." Fans of the show will welcome the 1998 remastered CD, which adds two and a half minutes to "Hello Twelve, Hello Thirteen, Hello Love." While still incomplete, the montage now includes "Four-foot ten," "Little brat," and "The worst thing in school...."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars chorus line cd
service and timing was exceptional on this purchase.order placed, shipped and received in a matter of a few days.

3-0 out of 5 stars Perfect First for a collection
The best thing about A Chorus Line is not only does it have great music, great lyrics, and a great script, but also it lets the entire world see what actors, singers, and dancers go through. Which is why I put this as the First CD to buy for someone interested in broadway. If you have a collection and don't have this, best get on that. This show is a great introduction into broadway and a wonderful study of the arts. Favorite Songs: "Sing" & "What I Did for Love"

5-0 out of 5 stars AN ABSOLUTE CLASSIC!
It's one of the finest soundtracks for a B'way musical I've ever heard. The CD captures the best moments of the show including some songs that will live forever such as "What I Did for Love", "One" and "I Hope I Get It". I've seen the play three times: twice in B'way and once in London (very good but not as good as the B'way version at the Shubert). It's one of those shows that remain forever in your mind and heart and that you know for certain it's a great classic of all times. No collectors of B'way shows can miss this one: it's a MUST, in capital letters. ... Read more
