Editorial Review

R.L. Burnside's background is pure Mississippi Delta--he was raised in the hill country and musically trained by quintessential bluesmen like Fred McDowell. But this record, like all his work, is infused with an adventurous spirit, haunted by eerie bits of electronic music and dark, despondent subject matter. The combination sounds irresistibly fresh, and scary as a hellhound on your trail. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Forget the Stones Listen to Burnside
When "Big Daddy" died last year, Mississippi and the nation lost another national treasure.Listening to this CD I'm amazed by the dedication to moving the blues foreward Burnside had, even in his final days.By contrast, I'm equally amazed by the lack of a sense of a new direction by the big name groups who are putting out watered down versions of the same things they havebeen doing for years. If you want a treat look into the Burnside Exploration, two of "Big Daddy's" grandsons, their blues power duo of guitar anddrum was "doing it" before anyone ever heard of the White Stripes.I hope they can chart a path to the future as bright as their grandfather's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why didn't I find him sooner?
RL Burnside is awesome! When I heard one of his songs on Accuradio.com, a streaming internet radio site and I was hooked. I thought, "I gotta get my hands on that CD!" When I arived home, I couldn't wait to play it. I cranked the volume up loud and had a lil' jam fest! I loved the way he incorporated hip-hop beats with his soulful blues sound! I will definitely be buying more of his albums in the future!

5-0 out of 5 stars I like it!
I love some of the sound effects that were added to this recording though Fat Possum added 3 bonus tracks done without remixing to try and satisfy everyone no doubt."Chain of Fools" especially is a must-hear with the rapper effects. On my copy, however, "Black Mattie" (the first bonus track), starts over a minute into the track.Do I have a defective copy or is it supposed to be this way? ... Bobby Bland could both comfort and chill, sometimes in the same song. He does so on this undeniably classic album's "Lead Me On," which begins with the line "You know how it feels, you understand / What it is to be a stranger in this unfriendly land" and ends softly two minutes later with the promise "I'll follow you." Such drama, coupled with a mellow soulfulness, is the norm on Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars They've butchered his songs
Garbage, don't buy. They've chopped up songs and spliced pieces together. For example Fooled Around is about 1/2 the length of the original, they cut the openning riff in half, removed an ENTIRE stanza (if you can believe it).I was very dissapointed.Keep shopping, but don't waste your money like I did.

Slim Harpo recorded really good rhythm and blues. He never got too fancy; he never forgot the importance of the groove. He died young in 1970, but his music reached the Rolling Stones (who covered his "I'm a King Bee"), the Kinks (who sang his "I Got Love If You Want It"), Van Morrison, and Them (whose first single was Harpo's "Don't Start Crying Now"). These songs and other greats--"Tip on In," "Baby, Scratch My Back"--are all included in this excellent collection ofHarpo's greatest sides. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quit teasin' me, baby.
This is an excellent compilation of some of Slim Harpo's best recordings. Slim played the blues in a way that was accesible to a mainstream audience. He actually had two crossover pop hits, with "Rainin' in My Heart" and "Baby Scratch My Back". His songs "I Got Love If You Want It" and "I'm a King Bee" are also recognized classics, although they are perhaps better known for their cover versions by British Invasion groups. Slim's songs are enjoyable, although he did tend to repeat himself. For example, both "Little Queen Bee" and "Buzz Me Babe" are rewrites of "I'm a King Bee". And he did rewrites of his other popular songs, too. But such a thing is common in the blues field, so he can't really be faulted for that. Blues fans should enjoy this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bluesman To Remember
If you can say you knew Slim Harpo's work without an English group (The Rolling Stones) or individual musician (Eric Clapton) having had to bring it to your attention some years later, as has often been the case, then good for you.I remember going into this hardcore hillbilly bar (too young to be there) and hearing "Rainin' in My Heart" play often on the jukebox. It was 1961.Everybody seemed to know who it was. That was the first time I could put a name to a familiar singer on a "black only" radio station in Memphis, Tennessee.By the time "Baby, Scratch My Back" came along maybe 5 years later in the midst of British rock, protest songs and Nancy Sinatra, it sounded like a throwback to the 1950s.Slim Harpo was one of the few bluesmen who had a national audience (Motown was in full swing but that's a different thing). This package does in fact have the best of Slim Harpo as I remember his music from both before and after his breaking into the national mainstream.Unfortunately, just as it seems many of his fellow bluesmen did, Slim harpo died at an early age, he in 1970.He was 46 years old. Buy this thing.

Editorial Review

Cut during a period when Buddy Guy was rarely recorded, this blustery and breathtaking live set is full of idiosyncratic solos that dart after virtually any musical urge that strikes him. Such unpredictable improvisational impulses are more familiar to jazz than blues, but along with his whisper-to-scream singing, that's what makes Guy commanding onstage. His fevered take on the standard "Outskirts of Town" is outright incendiary. This album was originally released on Isabel, a French label named--at the singer-guitarist's insistence--after his late mother, who never had a chance to see her son perform. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Look what Santa did!
Blues musicians don't record Christmas songs that often, but Rhino Records managed to find 18 Christmas blues songs for this CD.Charles Brown's definitive recording of "Merry Christmas Baby" is well known, but the rest of the tracks are pretty obscure. There are a lot of good songs here, with my personal favorites being the ones by Eddie C. Campbell and Canned Heat.If you have any interest in the blues, this is the Christmas CD to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Blue Than Yule!!!
Well, let's see. As I write this review, the date is December 8th, 2004, and it's another two weeks and three days till Christmas finally arrives on the 25th. Since virtually every place in Creation started playing Christmas music on November 1st, you've had 38 days to become thoroughly SICK of the same dozen songs played over and over again from every radio station and retail establishment. Want some relief? How about an album chock-full of great Christmas BLUES music, that truly sounds more like blues that like standard, overplayed holiday ditties? Well, folks, get this CD!! It's nice and long (18 tracks) and only one or two numbers are overly familiar (and one of those, Charles Brown's immortal "Merry Christmas Baby," is usually considered the top Christmas blues recording of all time!) Standouts include Canned Heat (Their song is straightforward blues, not the novelty track they spun with ALvin and the Chipmunks), Detroit Junior with his hard-driving boogie "Christmas Day", the Pilgrim Travelers and their delightful, close-harmony doo-wop gospel classic, "I'll Be Home for Christmas," and the always-irrepresible Louis Jordan with "Santa Claus, Santa Claus." There's not a bad number in the bunch, but the pick of this holiday litter must go to Edddie Campbell and his delicious take on the Junior Wells masterpiece, here titled "Santa's Messin' With the Kid". So don't delay! Order today, there's still time to get it rushed to you by Christmas. Do it, and the best yuletide blues and r and b will be home to you, if not by Christmas, then by New Years night.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Better Christmas Blues Compilations!
I tracked this down during this Christmas season after hearing Canned Heat's "Christmas Baby" on a Heineken commercial of all places.Immediately hooked, I sent off an e-mail asking Heineken for the name of the song and to my surprise, they responded. Searching on Amazon, I found it on this CD and purchased it.What was bought for one song soon became my favorite Christmas compilation complete with Big Jack Johnson, Louis Jordan, John Lee Hooker and Sonny Boy Williamson.Even the lesser known Poppa Hop and The Pilgrim Travelers make notable contributions on this disc. 2-0 out of 5 stars Caution: Mistake
I got this CD specifically for the song "I'm Going Upside Your Head", which is listed as track #15 on CD 2.This song by Jimmy Reed is hard to find except on multi-disc boxes, which are generally more JR than anyone needs, since JR's sound and songs really do become quite repetitive from one track to another.Only problem is that track #15 on CD 2 is NOT "I'm Going Upside Your Head" -- it's something else, not very good.A major disappointment! The rest of the 2 CDs are as listed, and do include most of JR's best known numbers. So if you don't particularly mind not having "I'm Going Upside Your Head", this collection is really pretty good (4 stars).Again, if you don't mind not having the song mentioned here, the single disc collection on Rhino ("Blues Masters: The Very Best of Jimmy Reed") is really your best bet (5 stars).

5-0 out of 5 stars A CD for the ages
While Donald Fagen dates this CD by mentioning the wrap-up of Gulf War I, the music holds up, giving this gem a charm all its own. The selection of guest musicians is first rate, with Phoebe Snow and Michael McDonald giving it all they have on their rendition of " Knock on Wood", while Fagen himself provides a less electronic, more standard jazz version of " Greenflower Street", a number off his first solo album ( they were albums and tapes back then!) Boz Scaggs delivers with " Drowning in the Sea of Love", conveying just the right amount of poetic desperation ensconced in lovely arrangement of music. This was released when I was sixteen, already a devoted Steely Dan/Donald Fagen fan, and open to the interpretations of oldies by acts that had already stood the test of time. It's hard to believe that this CD isapproaching its sixteenth anniversary this coming March, but don't be dissuaded. This thirty-one year old is still grateful for the education.

3-0 out of 5 stars waiwaiwaiwai...!
I listened to this CD because a friend at work insisted on loaning it. Donald Fagen did his usual wonderful job of being Donald Fagen, Boz Scaggs did his usual great job of being Boz, and Charles Brown didn't have to be anyone but himself anyway. The band is as tight as The JBs. *However*...
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a fine live album!

With his meteoric run of hits from early 1955 through late 1961, Chicago's Jimmy Reed reigned as the most popular bluesman of his day, rivaled only by fellow Mississippi transplant B.B. King. By the mid-'60s Reed was playing New York's Carnegie Hall and the Apollo Theater and touring England as a star. Reed's sweet, Delta-inflected singing complemented the cool, walking bass shuffles of his cleverly crafted songs, the finest of which are to be found in this tasteful contribution to Rhino's Blues Masters series. Included here are chart toppers like "You Don't Have to Go," "Ain't That Lovin' You, Baby," "Baby, What You Want Me to Do," "Big Boss Man," and "Bright Lights, Big City," all durable standards that influenced a generation of rockers from Bob Dylan to the Rolling Stones to Jimi Hendrix and earned Reed his proper place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Influential Bluesman On Fine Single Disc Overview
A budget price Blues Master series issue sounding great withbooklet from this loose down and out bluesman giant who so much influenced rock and roll and it's seniors such as the Stones,Dead,Them,Neil Young,The Yardbirds who covered these Reed originals as their own on their individual band cd's.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hard-Hitting Song Selection
MCA's pitiful "20th Century Masters" series made me skeptical of the cursory and careless patch-work that constitutes the "greatest hits" collections of most Blues and Rock masters. But Rhino, as usual, proves to be the industry's most adept anthologizing entity here and has gone quite far to put the work of Rock 'N Roll's many geniuses into the kind of perspective that does proper justice to the artists. This Jimmy Reed collection, with its careful, dense and precise song selection, is no exception. Its 17-song track list reflects exactly the kind of generosity that the "20th Century Masters" series lacks. Not a single one of Reed's original classics eludes the radar here, from the particularly raw and aggressive early numbers, "High and Lonesome" and "Aint That Lovin' You Baby" to the smoother and more casual knockouts that stole crowds from Carnegie Hall to London in the late 50s, such as "Bright Lights Big City" and "Baby What You Want Me to Do," admirably covered by Neil Young (one of Reed's biggest fans) & Crazy Horse on their 1996 album, "Broken Arrow." That Reed would earn such a tribute from an artist whose roots are steeped in a tradition so dramatically distinct from his own testifies to the immensity of his influence. This is the document of a true American innovator whose work and talent made Rock 'N Roll possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anything by Jimmy Reed is good
Haven't as yet listened to this cd but I don't really need to to know how good this man was in his time.Everybody in to the blues knows Jimmy Reed and his easy going soft flowing style. The man had it all with some of his arrangements having grown into some of the most recognizable blues licks anywhere on the planet. The Stones covered him earlier in their career as did many others, and it;s just a shame how Mr. Reed's own personal life must have been painfull to the point of him drinking himself to death at the early age of 50.What ghosts must have hauted this man to drive him to such an early grave?I suppose we'll never know and it's probably just as well?Jimmy Reed was a public performer it's true. But firstly he was a man deserving of the respect he's been given in death atleast if not in life, and we should leave him to rest peacefully and leave his old past ghosts alone.Sleep well Jimmy! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT ONE SHOULD BE PAYING...
An earier reviewer was whining about JSP records not paying royalties.Who does this chump think the royalties would be paid to ???Charley Patton is long dead so quit your carping about the copyright owners not getting their fair share. These SOB's are making money anyway.Besides its about the music.

2-0 out of 5 stars Patton is fantastic --- JSP is suspect.
What seems too good to be true usually is; the complete output of Charlie Patton -- dozens of $1,000+ original records all compiled here for under $30?Only one word comes to mind:piracy.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good price; fair sound; borrowed sources?
There are both good and bad things about this set. The 5 discs of very rare and valuable material make up a rather incredible compilation. The layout of the inserts is somewhat user-friendly; requiring the listener to pull individual CDs out in order to locate artists. The discography information does not include song titles, which causes a lot of back-and-forth cross-reading. A little confusing.

Like Jelly Roll Morton and Professor Longhair, James Booker belonged to the great tradition of New Orleans piano "professors," players whose flamboyance extended from the keyboard to every aspect of life. On this 1975 solo recording, Booker's music is a gumbo of everything from barrelhouse blues and R&B to memories of childhood classical training as he ranges through material that had its origins with Chopin, Leadbelly, Earl King, and Tin Pan Alley. It's all stirred together in the high-speed blender of Booker's piano technique, driving, rock-solid left-hand rhythms colliding with the percussive runs that explode from the right. Booker is an effective singer, with a casual musicality and a lived-in voice, but the vocal tracks inevitably feel like piano with vocal accompaniment. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars this is a tight Album
James Booker had a way of making a Piano sound like more than two hands were working those Black&White keys. Musicianswho truly laid the blue print for all that followed&for all that shall follow. this album showcases his full Musical Gumbo&it serves up a full course meal listen upon listen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only two hands?
I defy anyone to listen to "Pixie" and be convinced only one man is playing. Unless that one man is the legendary James Booker. Not unlike Nina Simone in his way of combining classical elements into jazz and R+B, Booker is as good as it gets for New Orleans-style piano. When he sings "Junco Partner", its with a voice that rings all too true. Great stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars If music was booze.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Gangstas, Role Models, and Elvis Presley
This disc (as well as its companion, "Vol. 2: Dont'cha Hear Poor Mother Calling?") is perhaps some of the most beautiful and honest recordings of human expression you'll ever hear.Modern music has nothing on this stuff; it's the real deal. This is music that was created to get you through the day; not to sell records or to score chicks. This is as anti-commercial, and therefore, as antiestablishment as you can get.Truly alternative. And it is, in a word, spellbinding.5-0 out of 5 stars DEEP
I really had no idea what i was in store for. But for those who love black, southern and prison history, spirituals, and are thirsting for music in its purest form, buy this CD!!! It has wonderful chants, commentary from Lomax, narrative from the inmatesand even clanking from the axes. You can hear the suffering and longing in their voices. You can hear the humor in may of the lyrics. Be sure to read the booklet so that you can get a clearer understanding of it all. It is a wonderful piece of recorded history. you may also want to buy the book Worse than Slavery, by Oshinsky so that you can get greater sense of exactly waht they are thinking about. One more thing..You will totally feel the energy of 22.

4-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly powerful music
I was blown away when I listened to this CD for the first time. The recording is great.I didn't expect too much due to the time frame of the recording, but the quality is impressive.I bought this hoping to find more tracks like "Po' Lazarus" from the "O' Brother Where Art Thou" Soundtrack. What I got was much more. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Next Generation of Great Cajun Musicians
The great Cajun musician Dewey Balfa once observed that "A culture cannot be kept alive under glass in a museum."And, indeed, the constant struggle for any folk musician is to maintain fidelity with tradition while also instilling a living vitality into the music. The Pine Leaf Boys have achieved this difficult balance as they offer Cajun standards that they have skillfully (re)arranged. They steer clear of the kind of contemporizing touches that will seem hackneyed in a few years, and they let their playing speak for itself. The result is an album that has a timeless feel but with an energy level that is unmistakably young. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Agents of 6th Street, Austin, Texas
This is probably one of the best blues recording I've picked up in a while.I was curious to see what the early Fabulous Thunderbirds sounded like and all I can say is WOW.I picked this up on, of all things, LP at Half Price Book in Austin, Texas. All the songs are great, Jimmy Lee burns it up on Full Time Lover.
5-0 out of 5 stars don't be scared
This is the best and bluesiest of T-Birds cds. What I enjoy most is the absence of any second guitar or keyboard, or rather, the way these guys play without those 'extra' instruments:No fear. The space is beautiful, and when it's right, (and it is), there's nothing better than a bent note just sitting out in the air by itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Thunderbirds "Girls Go Wild"
Ask any working professional blues guitarist or any other blues musician, including his younger brother Stevie Ray Vaughan, and he will probably say that Jimmie Vaughan is one of the greatest blues guitarists of the last 40 years, perhaps longer. Vaughan probably had as much of an impact with this, the Fab T'Birds first album, as Eric Clapton had back in 1966 with John Mayall (The Beano Album). In effect, Jimmie Vaughan helped convert millions of guitar wanking/noodling blooze players (myself included!) into more serious rootsy players. He succeeded in distilling Jimmie Reed, Jimmie Rogers, T-Bone Walker,, a young B.B. King, Lightning Hopkins, Slim Harpo, John Lee Hooker, and several others into an unbeatable blend-- himself. Problem is (well it isn't really a problem)-- there is only one Jimmie Vaughan, meaning that he is the original and can never be duplicated, let alone imitated. Nobody in recent memory has been able to "tell a story" with every solo the way he has. (This is no doubt the reason Stevie Ray considered his older brother Jimmie the better player.) As a rhythm player nobody has come close. Believe me, many have tried. Seeing him play live was overwhelming. And that's just the guitar player on this debut!

4-0 out of 5 stars ****1/2. Better sound, better mixes
The original seven-track Muddy 'Mississippi' Waters Live" album was a nice, but ultimately inessential record.
5-0 out of 5 stars and I thought I've heard it all
I guess I must have not read Muddys biography enough or didn't put two and two together. I thought with the Chess Box 3 CD set I have almost all of his recordings.5-0 out of 5 stars Best Blues Vocalist

5-0 out of 5 stars The Queen Of Rock and Roll
If Rock and Roll would've stayed on the same course as the late Alan Freed envisioned, this lady would be called the Queen of Rock and Roll today. You see, Freed's original Rock and Roll didn't include the likes of Elvis and teen idols like Paul Anka and Frankie Avalon or Bobby Rydell. Instead it included artists who were the innovators of pure uncommercialized Rock and Roll. The Moonglows,Wynonie Harris,Little Richard,Hank Ballard and The Midnighters,Little Willie John, Louis Jordan,Johnny Ace,The Dominoes,Laverne Baker,Big Joe Turner,Clyde McPhatter and The Drifters,Roy Brown, and this lady Ruth Brown. One of the reviewers on this post says that this cd contains only 2 minor hits that Ruth had in her career. That is the most untrue statement I have ever heard concerning an artist. In fact, her 2 pop charters are the smallest hits she ever had and are 2 of the most unrecognizable amongst true Rock and Roll fans.Let's now get to and correct the facts. Between 1950 and 1955 Ruth scored 5 #1 hits on Billboards R&B charts. Yes I said R&B charts, they were just as important and significant back then as they are today. Although not labeled as such, these 5 #1 smashes were probably all million sellers for Ruth and Atlantic records. In fact Atlantic records used to be referred to as "The House That Ruth Built". Her biggest hit period-pop or r&b-or (otherwise) came in 1950 with "Teardrops From My Eyes". I have no doubt that this was probably a million selling 78. It was #1 for 11 weeks on Billboards R&B chart and stayed on the charts for 25 weeks total. Simply a massive-massive hit that year. Her second #1 hit is a registered million seller that came in April of 1952, the hit "5-10-15 Hours" was #1 for a full 7 weeks . The next #1 for Ruth came in February of 1953 and easily is her most recognized and trademark song, the classic "Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean" was #1 for 5 weeks. In August of 1954 came another #1 classic, the great ballad written by Chuck Willis for Ruth called "Oh What A Dream".The song was #1 for 8 weeks and in all likelihood sold a million discs. Keep in mind I'm just naming her #1's during these years,Ruth had many top 10's also during these years.Ruth Weston hit #1 again in October of 1954 with "Mambo Baby".It was #1 for 1 week and was on the charts for 3 months. Now to the small potatoes-Ruth's 2 pop charters are not-I repeat-are not her biggest hits or most recognizable hits. The songs 'Lucky Lips" and "This little Girl's Gone Rockin"were her only top 40 pop charters in her career and made it to #24 and #25 respectively on the pop charts in 1957 and 1958 but are a million miles away from being her biggest sellers or hits or even her most recognizable hits. I am so sorry so many people were not exposed to her massive hits and best work she recorded between 1950 and 1955,but such were the times. After the 50's came to a close,Ruth never scored another hit on the R&B charts during the soulful 60'S except for "Don't Deceive Me" at the beginning of the decade. But she did honor us with 2 top 10 classics before the 60's hastily ushered it's way in and that was 1959's #5 hit and classic "I Don't Know" and 1960's #10 classic "Don't Deceive Me". "I Don't Know" is her best late 50's song. So now I feel so much better now that I've corrected a few people. Ruth is the Queen of Rock and Roll and Wynonie Harris is The King of Rock and Roll and this cd needs to be in your collection especially if you dig Rock the way the late Alan Freed envisioned it.I'm venturing off now into amazon land to correct other folks. Keep Rockin and a Rollin'

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Forget Ruth Brown; a 50's Great!
Don't ever forget Ruth Brown, one of the greatest female rock singers of the 1950's. She had the two minor hits on this CD, Lucky Lips and This Little Girl's Gone Rockin', but there is so much more. Every cut on this CD is an absolute
