Many bluesmen have come and gone, but certain ones seem to have been around forever.Their music predates the fancy new singers, and while those new guys rise and fall, the old bluesmen stay the same, unchanged by time and just as beautiful and appealing as ever before.5-0 out of 5 stars An Overlooked Founding Father.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
This is the best single disc Freddie King Collection on the market, considering that Hideaway: The best of Freddie King is out of print. Two or three selections are doubtful (Dust my broom and Sugar sweet), but mostly it is really good, combining his trademark instrumentals (Hideaway, The Stumble, etc) with wocal tracks. Freddie's sharp, melodic and intense guitar playing influenced a lot white blues guitarists - most obviously - at least to my ears - Eric Clapton on the John Mayall's Bluesbrakers with Eric Clapton album. If you like blues, or just great guitar playing (and there's some fine singing from Freddie as well), get this record.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic melodic, poppy blues
They say timing is everything, and in Freddie King's case, that certainly was true. His early hits, especially the classic instrumentals, "Hide Away" and "San-Ho-Zay," came out in 1960 and '61, at precisely the right moment for his career to intersect with the SoCal surf scene (which also centered on instrumental numbers) and the nascent British blues revival, which was ever eager to find American bluesmen to latch onto and laud. Here, white kids on both sides of the Atlantic had a guy who bridged the gap between raw authenticity and pop polish, setting the standard for the zilllion-and-one future Fendermen who sought to sharpen their guitar chops.Fittingly, King cracked into the US Top 40 while also picking up flocks of converts (such as Eric Clapton) who worshipped his fluid, pop-tinged electric guitar leads.King's style was a perfect distillation of the smooth yet soulful postwar blues style, rootsy yet accessible and perfectly pitched for the ears of adoring white blues fans. His career had its ups and downs, but by the time he passed away in 1976, he had packed them in on the pop and blues circuits... This disc covers the breadth of his career, matching the ace oldies up with a good selection of his often overly-bombastic later material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Freddie King is a blues master
I don't have this actual CD, but I have most of the songs that are on it from other collections and they are all great. This is a great collection of Freddie King's work from his earliest recordings (1960's "Have You Ever Loved A Woman") to his later Shelter records material (1969's "Palace of the King" and "Going Down"). If you like blues guitar, then at least one Freddie King CD should be in your collection. He influenced countless guitarists, particularly Eric Clapton. This is a good place to start if you're new to this blues guitar master. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not bad for what it is
So he sang some simple blues songs and played his simple guitar licks and died young. And thus begins the pattern that if you die young your importance and talent become magnified far beyond what it would have been had he lived another 20 years and drank himself into obscurity. Forget the hype and get real.

4-0 out of 5 stars Poor sound quality... so what?
Mount Vernon Maven points out accurately that this recording sounds "horrific" and that it needs to be "remastered remastered remastered" to sound good on that "fabulous audio system". To be fair, it does sound bad.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Title Of Ths Album Says It All!!!RIP Mr. Johnson
The Late, Great Robert Johnson was truly the King Of The Delta Blus. I have heard that his guitar work was unique because he played his instrument as if it was a Blues Piano and if you listen carefully to his technique you will realize that this is a pretty good assessment. This album contains many fine tracks such as "Cross Road Blues". Mr. Johnson lived hard and fast with a drink in one hand and a lady in waiting on his arm and he travelled on Railway cars as if he truly did have a Hellhound on his trail. One gets the impession that perhapshe believedthat his time on this Earth would be short which it sadly was. RIP Robert. ... Read more

But, you were with us in first period Gym class playing flag football on those cold mornings. And we came by to pick you up to go to school and you would come draggingout of the house with a toothbrush in your mouth and your shoes and socks in you hands. You were up 'til 3am playing music around Dallas nightclubs.going to school was tough. But you were with us and we will always remember and love you for it..

5-0 out of 5 stars Contains One of the Best Blues Guitar Tracks Ever Recorded
Prior to hearing 'Second Winter,' my favorite blues tune had been when then-unknown Johnny Winter joined Michael Bloomfield on stage at the Filmore East and played an unbelievable 11 minute version of BB's 'It's My Own Fault.' I highly recommend getting your hands on that, but the slower 12 minute version included here is equally as good.It really showcases Johnny's amazing ability to combine lightning-fast speed with deep, emotion-jarring blues. Johnny is sort of in the same genre as Rory Gallagher in that although they have some fantastic blues tracks, their music is generally mostly blues-based rock, and not pure blues like B.B. or Muddy. Rory & Johnny (and Michael) never really achieved the notariety that they richly deserved except amongst those who love blues-guitar. In either case, there is no denying that Johnny was one of the best during his prime era.Another great blues track on this CD set is the live version of the classic 'Mama Talk to Your Daughter.' If you're looking for more slow blues masterpieces by Johnny, I highly recommend 'Be Careful with a Fool' on his self-titled CD, 'Life is Hard' on the 'Let Me In' CD, and 'You Keep Saying that You're Leaving' on 'Hey, Where's Your Brother' Cd.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you like blues guitar....
"It's my own fault" on the live disc may be the best 12 minutes of electric blues guitar I've ever heard. It seems blues guitarists are everywhere these days, but at his peak - which just happens to have been around the time he was playing the Royal Albert Hall in April 1971 - Johnny was in a league of his own. No player today I'm aware of comes even close. The 2nd Winter CD is great also, as is the rest of the live disc. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Winter Was Never This Hot
Johnny Winter deserves his place in the pantheon occupied by Hendrix, Clapton, McLaughlin, Reinhardt and now I'm running out. This is Texas electric blues at its best.

Editorial Review

Louisiana native Tab Benoit has been slinging his swamp-R&B-blues-rock concoction for the better part of 15 years, and from the sound of this disc's opening two tunes, it seems that little besides his backing band has changed. But when the title track kicks in with sorrowful fiddle, crying pedal steel (also played by Benoit), and a lovely, lonely honky-tonk melody, it's clear the singer/guitarist has decided to visit some unique territory. Country stalwarts Jim Lauderdale and Billy Joe Shaver swing by to provide duet vocals for Benoit's versions of their songs. Even Hank Williams Sr.'s "I Heard That Lonesome Whistle" gets covered as Benoit finds the blues at the heart of the country standard. Those who are not county lovers need not be concerned that Benoit has gone all George Jones on them. He still grinds out slabs of tough bayou rocking in the crackling "So High" and the opening "Pack It Up." There's also a heartbreaking, loungey, slow blues ("Somehow") and a soul-seared cover of Sam Cooke's "Bring It on Home to Me" that shows how effective Benoit is as an interpretive vocalist. The funky Little Feat/Neville Brothers-styled "Can't Do One More Two-Step" truly brings it home on a diverse outing that stretches boundaries and adds depth to Benoit's already impressive roots. 5-0 out of 5 stars Artists influence apparent
Tab's previous albums had acute cajunand root influence. On this CD the instrument choice andpowerful deep vocals made this apparent. Blues and country fans alike will appreciate the artisty and song choice. This album not only keeps Tab's current fans, but also creates a possible new audience.Overall great sound quality and fantastic buy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, if not misleading title!
Tab Benoit is one of my favorite blues artists and I particularly like it when he mixes the blues with a little Cajun flavor from the Bayou. That being said, I was taken by surprise at the lack of blues on this release. The CD consists of mostly hillside country music complete with pedal steel, banjo and fiddle.Something tells me that if he titled this recording to reveal its true contents, sales would be somewhat dismal. Tab's tip of the hat to the songs which he knew as a child will be better appreciated by some country fans but, it is sure to leave blues fans a little unsatisfied. Especially knowing that we may have to wait another year or two for a suitable new release.

2-0 out of 5 stars Warning: This is not a blues CD
Don't let the title confuse you. This is not a blues CD. Its country. Tab Benoit writes in the liner notes this is a "special project" of all of his "early musical influences" "especially early country music."

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem.
This is Muddy Waters rocking out!He is in fine voice, a force of nature, with a hard driving band.Forget the labels, this is joyous rock n' roll.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic look at a true legend
According to the liner notes from this one, Muddy had a tough time with Blues festivals. First he was too electric and loud. The next year he was too acoustic and quiet. From the sound of this one, he finally got it just right.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the all-time classic live blues albums
Muddy Waters' July, 1960 appearance at the Newport Folk Festival was recorded and issued as one of the first live blues albums, and one of the very best as well. A bit short at only nine songs (plus four studio recordings), but that's just about the only complaint you could possibly lodge against this classic recording.

Editorial Review

Call it three for the price of one. Far from engaging in a guitar-playing shootout, Albert Collins, Robert Cray, and Johnny Copeland work together incredibly well, achieving a kind of musical synergy that's rarely heard. Copeland and Cray handle most of the vocal duties, and Cray's smooth, soul-tinged voice (positively shiver-eliciting on "The Dream," as is Collins's lead guitar work) complements Copeland's growl perfectly. Collins doesn't get to sing as much, but he more than makes up for it with his harmonica on the slow blues "Bring Your Fine Self Home." And of course, all three turn in stellar guitar work, trading solos and rhythm parts with the greatest of ease; Cray was a relative newcomer at the time of this recording, but he more than holds his own. One would be hard pressed to find a better blues collaboration anywhere. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have in Any Blues Collection - Simply Stellar
I just came across this disc recently, while I was doing searches on Johnny Copeland's records. When this record came up, I was surprised to see Albert Collins, Johnny Copeland, and Robert Cray play together, but now I know that both Copeland and Cray were Albert Collins' proteges when they were starting out.
5-0 out of 5 stars Synergy
I first bought this on vinyl in the mid-80s. I listened to a lot of blues back then because, well, pop music really sucked.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Collaboration
I've been listening to this effort for over a decade and it still sounds good. It's hard to imagine that these guys hadn't worked together for years. Many collaborative efforts come off as contrived. This comes off smooth and natural. The combination of Collins' guitar and Cray's voice on "The Dream" is spine-tingling. "Black Cat Bone" is another favorite. ... Read more

Bobby Bland's purr-to-a-scream vocals quickly made him an R&B star in an era when rougher-hewn blues masters such as Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf had fallen from the charts. Bland, a former valet for B.B. King, established himself with both up-tempo workouts ("Farther Up the Road," "I Pity the Fool") and devastatingly subtle ballad readings ("I'll Take Care of You," "Stormy Monday Blues"). Read more

Along with Joe Turner, Jimmy Rushing and Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Bobby Bland was a rarity in the legacy of classic blues singers in that he was a singer who didn't play an instrument. However, unlike Turner, Rushing and Hawkins, Bland didn't come out of the jump/big-band tradition where such a dynamic was more commonplace.5-0 out of 5 stars a great talent

Editorial Review

A decade after his tragic, untimely demise, electric-blues legend Stevie Ray Vaughan has left behind a void that remains largely unfilled, despite a number of ballyhooed young pretenders. The guitarist's career was long troubled by personal demons, and this album chronicles those deceptively languorous, slow blues jams where Vaughan did battle with them. The howling, fervent tone he coaxed from his instrument was a product of lessons learned only in the School of Hard Knocks, accompanied by a voice--perhaps the most underrated of Vaughan's talents--that perfectly underscored his tortured gospel. But those who stereotyped Vaughan as a paint-by-numbers bluesman misunderstood the breadth of his lexicon; listen to "Chitlins con Carne" (from the guitarist's posthumous Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing journey through the blues universe!
The brief existence of Steve Ray Vaughan meant a great loss not only for the guitar world but the blues. Vaughan owned a personal trademark for this genre, even he was a famed rock singer. His special dark vocal inflections, and his peculiar style added the blues a propulsive fresh breath.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new, but it's great anyway
Well, I felt a little bit bad about not actually reviewing the album...you can find my original "review" below, where I make myself interesting by pointing out that this is not new material but rather a collection of previously released songs (with the exception of "The Sky Is Crying", an outtake from the "Couldn't Stand The Weather" sessions, but that one also appereared on the similarly titled album of outtakes issued after Vaughan's tragic death, although that was a different take).3-0 out of 5 stars sloooow and easy

Excellent compilation and a great collection of songs recorded under the limited enviroment that Eli Toscanos Cobra Studio had, but all these songs stand by themselves. Every time I hear Otis or Freddie King I can hear Eric Clapton, its clear he got influenced by this great musician. I cant quit you baby, a song written by Willie Dixon (who plays almost all the bass parts) later covered by Led Zeppelin and All your love later covered by the same Eric Clapton with John Mayall and also Aerosmith payed tribute this song later on.

A criminally underrated performer, southpaw guitarist Otis Rush broke into the R&B top 10 on his first attempt with the great slow blues "I Can't Quit You Baby".

Editorial Review

Mardi Gras remains one of America's most other-worldly cultural riots, never more exotic than in the beaded, feathered spectacle of New Orleans' black "Indian" tribes. Each year they stir the city's African, Native American, and European influences into an intoxicating gumbo roiling with syncopated rhythms and coded with their own sense of the festival's competitive spirit. It's that tradition that explains this deliriously infectious 1976 project, which magnifies the Tchoupitoulas' fanny-shaking bravado with a formidable studio crew helmed by producer Allen Toussaint, who enlisted the Neville Brothers and the Meters to give these tracks a kinetic R&B push-and-pull. With the Nevilles' choral vocals fleshing out traditional chants, this is funky prancing of the highest order, from the infectious "Brother John" to a ripe remake of the Meters' "Hey Pocky A-Way." One need only hear the tough bragging of "Meet the Boys on the Battlefront," with its promise that "the Wild Tchoupitoulas gonna stomp some rump," to get the outrageous picture. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars no one doesn't like it
from the Iko-Iko-like kickoff, this sly rampage unfolds into pure pleasure. 'Think a cut or two in the middle are sub-par? You'll like them soon enough and see how they fit in the groove. How many records do I take down from the shelf 30+ years on and like exactly the same way? This is in that small club.

Just do yourself a favor and get it.With 20 stone-cold winners lined up shoulder-to-shoulder, this is not just the best Louis Jordan anthology available, it delivers more jubilation for the buck than just about anything in the Amazon jungle.

Giood reviews by ball above but, some of you are plainly over looking the double-sided lyrics of some of his tunes. To say that "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" has "Goofy" lyrics is not seeing the truth behind the words.

Editorial Review

Beausoleil may have originated as Cajun purists, but Cajun music itself has always been a rich, creolized mixture combining Southern country and folk music with traditional songs from France's Brittany region. Revealing the band's own increasingly wide-ranging stylistic borrowings over the course of the 15-year period it encompasses, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My First "True" Cajun CD
I listened to, and subsequently purchased this recording after reading another Amazon reviewer's review of a contemporary Zydeco CD.The reviewer said that he/she liked the Zydeco recording, but ordinarily preferred traditional Cajun music, such as that of Michael Doucet. This is great--wonderful upbeat tunes with great vocals. It's fun to try to decipher the lyrics, and it reminds me of learning to read Shakespeare for the first time.Once you get used to it, it's fairly easy.If you're a fan of the various Zydeco groups and haven't yet discovered Doucet, check it out.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent CD To Introduce People To Beausoleil
Beausoleil has cranked out many albums over their existence. This particular album encompasses a fifteen year period in which we see them grow from traditional rebels to modern masters of mixing genres. You'll hear a little bit of everything on this disc. From heavy French and Caribbean influence to good time rock, Beausoleil ties it all together nicely with the fiddle play of Michael Doucet.I've personally dubbed his style "lazy fiddle," and I have no intentions of that sounding derogatory.I love to listen to Doucet bend and peel notes off of his fiddle.
