5-0 out of 5 stars Full of emotion
This CD is great.I can't quit listening to it.Chris Thomas King's voice is haunting at times it is so good, and the guitar work is excellent as well.He is a great musician who is somewhat undiscovered. The tracks by Blind Mississppi add a different style, but are also very good.If you like blues or roots music, buy this CD!

4-0 out of 5 stars Blends all sorts of musical flavors into a refined amalgam
This cleanly recorded, live set from Taj Mahal backed by the excellent, tight Phantom Blues Band, blends all sorts of musical flavors into a refined amalgam. The strain, stress, and anguish that make too many forays into contemporary blues a sure-fire ticket for a migraine are cast aside for grace, craft, and smoothness. On the other hand, there is enough edge here to add texture. In many ways, the energy, vibe, and diversity here remind me of the superb but obscure "Rust" by Kevin Brown, must more so than the largely sterile renderings from say Eric Clapton.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Blues
Next to Eric Clapton, I'd have to say that Taj's blues are the best around.Look no further than track 3, Ain't That Alotta Love? for the perfectly executed blues song. From the bass line to the vocals, you don't get better. This album has found its way among my short list of classics, and well-deserving.I can't wait to get the chance to see him jam live in person!

3-0 out of 5 stars Care for an appetizer anyone? Wine, cheese and blues perhaps
Virtuosic playing and uncommonly clean sound quality aside, the diversity of material prevents this set from ever catching fire. It's a collection of appetizers that never adds up to a full meal. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a meltdown but still impressive
What we have here is a melding of old and new and that's not all bad contrary to the previous review. Mark Hummel is the guiding force and is one of the best in the biz for West Coast harping. Also helping out is Muddy Waters' former drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith who started out on harp.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Blues Release
Even if you own "Live at the Regal", you can't go wrong picking this up.Just as "Miles In Tokyo" benefits from audience reception, so too does "Live In Japan".It really is that good.5-0 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC RECORDING!
This is vintage BB King complete with a band providing piano, trombone, trumpet and sax for that jazzy blues feel.Recorded live in 1971 at Sankei Hall, Tokyo, Japan the CD is fast moving and has an air of excitement surrounding it.In addition to the staples, "Every Day I Have The Blues", "How Blue Can You Get?", "The Thrill Is Gone" the disc contains some rarities such as"Niji Baby", "Japanese Boogie", "Jamming at Sankei Hall" and "Hikari #88".A fine performance from a living legend.

5-0 out of 5 stars my oh my, this is seriously HOT stuff
Cook County Jail is considered a classic, with good reason.Live at the Regal is considered even more classic, with less reason (although it would be difficult to top the first few songs on that set). This set was bumped aside from American release by a busy schedule of B.B King records. But it blows away every B.B. King live record I've heard, including the classics.Don't know what it is about blues singers in Japan (Otis Rush also recorded a tremendous live set in Japan) but the audiences seem to elicit best performances. This disk sounds fabulous and B.B.'s singing is great, although not quite as great as his guitar playing. He plays all kinds of blues in all tempos and just nails 'Sweet Sixteen' and 'Thrill is Gone' (better than the very fine Cook County versions in both cases). Please try this disk out! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Seals discards the velvet alligator
David J. Brown, reviewer below, has a problem with Alligator Records.I have that same problem - Bruce Iglauer's studio sucks most of the energy out of his blues artists' performances when it records studio albums. It is ironic that this happens because Iglauer's first label signing, Hound Dog Taylor, recorded his albums with a lot of excitement, much like live albums (in fact on several of his songs, his live versions were a bit more tame than the studio versions). One of Iglauer's greatest finds, Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials (fantastic live band, incidentally) had no concept of how a studio album was to be recorded and in the space of a few hours in their first trip to Alligator's studio, ripped off ten songs as if they were performing for an audience at a club and came up with Roughhousin', which might be be the best "studio" album Alligator ever put out.If you look a bit further in Alligator's catalog, you'll also find a solitary Buddy Guy album, Stone Crazy, which is a studio album that captures a great deal of Guy's live passion and dispenses with the politeness of most of his studio albums; however, there is a caveat - this album was actually recorded in France by another label and merely released in the U.S. by Alligator.
5-0 out of 5 stars ALL THE GRIT, NONE OF THE S**T!
I have a problem with Alligator Records. The over-produced sameness and glossy slickness of the stuff they did for Son Seals' studio albums is in direct contradiction to the rawness of his basic style. This album, however, shows it the way it should be...warts and all.
5-0 out of 5 stars Smokin' Electric Blues
This is an awesome collection of electric blues. Some reviewers rate this behind Seals' "Spontaneous Combustion", but I prefer this one.S.C. is also solid, but "Live & Burning" is a little more "raw".Great cuts thoughout, and a really good mix.One of my favorite blues CDs - and I have a LOT of blues CDs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to buy a Siegal Schwall CD buy this one
I haven't heard any other albums by them, but this one is smoking. You get 7 minutes of blues healing with upbeat harp and guitar jams in "I Don't Want You To Be My Girl,"and another 7 minutes in "Hush, Hush,"hee hee hee.Not that "Leavin'" should be overlooked because it is only 3 minutes long - that song smokes too.Yep, this is a good CD to help forget some woman. The CD ends with the best version of "Got My Mojo Working" that I have ever heard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Bluesmen
Luther Allison, even after his death, remains one of the largest mainstays of the Blues World. This is my second copy of this fabulous Blues Album after having worn out the first. This man is by far at the top of the ladder, sadly after his early demise, but to this day he has had the biggest impact on my blues addiction.I'm Leaving is no doubt one of the greatest blues songs ever performed by Luther and makes him stand out in the Crowd. Every song on this album showcases his superb talents when it comes to Lead Guitar playing and exuding the Blues.Close your eyes and journey to what is known as the "BLUES WORLD".You won't be disappointed, as Jean Cabot, of Rock and Folk relates, "At the moment, his guitar no longer speakes to you, it cries...and it's tears are blue". If this album is not in your collection then shame on you.You have no idea what you are missing. THE BEST, THE BEST of Luther Allison.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!
This "Live" performance of this excelent bluesman,is like something we are always searching during all of one life, and when we've found this.....what AMAZING discovery!!!!4-0 out of 5 stars This CD is hot!
I wonder why no one has reviewed this one yet.I wonder how many people have bought this one.I can see why one may not immediately pick this one up.First it only has ten songs on it and second most of the songs are noteven Luther's.well, let me set the records straight.even though thereare only ten songs on the disc you get almost 70 minutes worth of music -lots of extended jams from an excellent band.second, yes the tracklisting for the most part reads like a generic blues greatest hits disc:"Thrill is Gone", "Little red rooster", "Early inthe Morning", "Rock Me baby", etc I can't stress enough thatLuther really digs into these songs and puts his own spin on each. "thrill is Gone" which clocks in at over nine minutes is justamazing. The middle solo section is highly funkified and the final sectionwhere luther sings along note for note with his guitar solo, (Similar toalbert collins), chills just run up and down my spine. The man was anexcellent live performer and he really shows it on this disc.Of course itdoesn't hurt that it was recorded in Paris where he actually got therecognition he so richly deserved. The music deserves five stars, but theproduction knocks it down to four stars. The audience is virtuallyinaudible and this takes away from the live feel of the disc. You can hearLuther playing to the audience, but you can't hear how they react. Also,at the beginning of the disc you can hear the sound man turning knobs toget the mix right because the guitar fades in and out for a minute or sountil the sound is just right.even after this though there are a couplespots where he is still changing the mix slightly.believe me though, thesongs and the performance way outshine these small deficiencies and this CDis definitely worth picking up. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is not the original telecast.
I think this is an excellent and probably unique recording for those who love jazz. But - this is not the original telecast, as its sub-title - "The Memorable 1957 Telecast featuring...." seems to hint. This is a recordingmade some days before and featuring a number of alternative personnel.Where were Monk and Mulligan? The owner of the original video tape has aresponsibility to put out a companion to this CD, to compliment it, wartsand all - like Allen's and Rushing's monologues, the big bands raggedstarts, and Allen's quacking at the beginning of his two pieces. The videomust surely contain one of the most poignant little solos by Lester Young, and not his sorry statements on this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Golden Hour from Luminaries of Jazz' Golden Age
Nostalgic, romantic, bittersweet, enduring, Triumphant! The meaning of Life is expressed vocally and musically by these artist. The passion of Billie Holiday. The bittersweet storytelling in a phrase by Lester Young. The power of Coleman Hawkins. The fire of Roy Eldridge. The sensualromanticism of Ben Webster. The way your heart is lifted with wings whenyou hear them. Music such as this speaks to the silent voice in your soul, the unutterable voice, that pains or Life may have stifled but can neverdeafen. Clap hands, souls sing, foot stomp, smiles/eyesbeam.

5-0 out of 5 stars The finest spontaneous jam session ever heard
I was fortunate to actually view the live blackand white television performance of this great-est of all time jam session by the greatest jazzmusicians of our time. 4-0 out of 5 stars Return to form
Much has been made about Bobby Bland's voice not being what it once was. He is still one of the great ones, and if one weren't aware how truly extraordinary he once was, listening to him now wouldn't be quite so depressing. But, except for the occasional trademark phlegm induced growl he'll let out, he is still great. This CD was recorded at the New Daisy Theatre in Memphis where Bland made a name for himself. He is in good form as is his solid rhythm section. The real treat is that for recording purposes Bland and Malaco Records added a keyboard player to his regular band. They got renowned songwriter and session man Carson Whitsett, who played on several Bland albums as Malaco's band leader. Whitsett is absolutely terrific. His B-3 organ work really adds life to this concert, especially since Bland's horn section unfortunately gets worse and worse as the show progresses. 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfection...
...superlatives fail me. You just gotta hear it/gotta have it. A masterful Beale Street performance of (the classics and the 'Malaco moderns') Bobby Blue Bland and his revue. Blues you can use. Do not, do not, do not missout...

5-0 out of 5 stars Dreams come true
How long have we been waiting for this? Bobby Bland with his overwhelming band LIVE ON BEALE STREET? I am a blues fan from Germany who saw Bobby several times in the States, in Chicago and New York City. Bobby is withoutdoubt the greatest blues singerand he proves this on this occasion.Johnnie Taylor and Bobby Rush, longtime chitlin-curcuit friends round thegreat recording up. Only negative side: Bobby, please look for a differenthorn section!! They are not in tune on this CD and not on other concerts. 5stars for the atmosphere, the sound , the rhythm-section (10 stars!!!) andthe star, only 2 stars for the horns. 4-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes Less Is More
There is a lot of good stuff on this set and the booklet is great. That said, I knocked off one star because I was a little disappointed with this when compared to the Robert Nighthawk cuts that form his "Live On Maxwell St.-1964" CD.That one is an absolute masterpiece. This one is not nearly as consistant.Sometimes less IS more.

This is another favorite live electric blues recording. Albert absolutely makes that guitar sing. This guy should be at the top or near the top of any list of great eletric guitarists past and present. The only complaintis that there isn't more material here. 5-0 out of 5 stars The FirstNew Albert King Release In Years!
This set is definately a collector's item. It was recorded in May 1969 in Wisconsin and captures King at the height of his playing, during his time at Stax records. He is in good form and has a band with a horn section, unlike his famous Stax live albums (e.g.,Live Wire, Blues Power). He goes through his normal set, but includes some great surprises such as a great version of "Personal Manager", one of his classic self-penned slow blues numbers. This tune had previously only appeared on two of his albums- the original and one other live version (with no horns!!).The sound quality is fair, as I guess you would expect, there is tape hiss, but this is a great addition to anyone's blues collection. I am surprised that Scorsese's "The Blues" does not have a CD of Albert on offer!

Editorial Review

Because he was a black man with an acoustic guitar, Ted Hawkins often falls into the blues category, but this description ignores prominent elements of his music. A better description comes from writer Peter Guralnick, who called it simply a "rural adaptation of contemporary soul music." In his "rural soul," Hawkins incorporates the direct approach of Delta blues, the resignation of country music, the honest and idiosyncratic lyrics of folk, the hope of gospel, and the rich and tender vocals of soul. On this 1994 live album, Hawkins's urgent guitar strumming and infectious singing captivates and connects with the audience--after all, playing solo in front of a crowd is where Hawkins had the most practice, after years of Venice Beach busking. "All I Have to Offer You Is Me" was a hit for Charley Pride, country music's most celebrated African American performer. Hawkins renders a gripping a cappella version of John Fogerty's "Long as I Can See the Light," and his reading of Webb Pierce's honky-tonk staple "There Stands the Glass" is a perfect example of the emotional investment in whatever he sings. Even a simple testament to love like the original "Groovy Little Things" becomes a moving, spiritual moment. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars JUST A MAN & HIS GUITAR...AND THAT GREAT VOICE!
This is a great live album by one of the best voices in blues..uh soul...uh r&b...pop. And there's the rub. This was a man you couldn't put a label to. Which is why he remained a starving artist almost until the day he died. Which was way too soon for this great of a live entertainer. Hawkins could make his voice do just about anything. A very versatile singer who could run through a gamut of emotions in just one song. One of the best examples of this is his wonderful acappella version of John Fogerty's "As Long As I See The Light". This song alone is worth the price of admission here. Although he leaves a few of my faves off here, most notably "Happy Hour" and "Who Got My Natural Comb", he still gives us some of his most memorable like "Watch Your Step", "Revenge Of The Scorpio", and "Biloxi". The sound quality on this cd is excellent. It was recorded in 3 different venues. I especially liked the 3 songs he does in the Wisconsin University Auditorium, where you get the echo affect from his larger than life voice. The man could sing. It didn't matter if he was walking the sands of Venice Beach with his guitar, or playing a big room, Ted Hawkins always sounded like he was giving it all. There isn't anything slick or fancy here. Just a man and his guitar. This is a wonderful last hurrah from one of the most soulful singers ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars I don't usually gush, but this one rates it
This is one of the 3 or 4 best albums of any genre that I've ever heard. If that sounds like hyperbole, I'm sorry, but Ted Hawkins had it all: emotional directness, great taste in covers, perfect pitch, wonderful playing--he had it all in a way very few musicians do. His interpretive efforts are as strong as any by giants like Otis Redding and Patsy Cline. What clinches it for me is his songwriting: besides being emotionally mature and honest, it's incredibly literate and fresh. I mean, "The Good and the Bad" alone has several classic lines; when you hear him sing that "Sugar is noooooo gooood/Once it's cast among the white sands"--wow. His songs stand right up to his covers: when you can write as well as Jesse Winchester and John Fogerty, well that's sayin' something. I've been a fan since 1986 (Happy Hour): this is his best work, although it leaves a few classics off.

5-0 out of 5 stars I bought a copy for my father
Finding Ted's final album in a store in Boston on my first US trip, I stood for over an hour, headphones clasped to my head, amazed at the warmth and openness of every track.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the last live recordings by three greats.
I won't try to convert non-Canned Heat fans, but for those who care, this the last recording by Bob Hite, the last live recording by Ronnie Barron, and one of the few live recordings by Hooker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don'tForget toBoogie
This was one of my best live cassettes, almost worn out to transparent. Happily enough I got the Cd.3-0 out of 5 stars Only the JLH songs are special
This CD is a fair representation of a live concert in the mid-seventies when JLH sat in for a few songs at the end of the night. The crowd is enthusiastic and the energy from the band is high, but the only really standout tracks are the last three, featuring John Lee Hooker.Canned Heat plays a decent back-up role to a true legend and they swing and groove and growl well enough.Nothing earth-shattering, but there are some very enjoyable moments. The best aspect of this disc is the very palpable sense of atmosphere conveyed through a pretty well recorded gig.Simple, party type blues/rock, but JLH adds some magic. ... Editorial Review

Heralded as one of the greatest live blues albums ever recorded, this set catches the singer-guitarist as his star was in ascent: in 1964 playing Chicago's answer to Harlem's Apollo Theater--the Regal. King's performance is visceral. He sings so hard that gravel flies even in his clearest high notes. And his trademark single-note guitar lines are sharp and steely, matching his voice with trembling vigor. He offers early hits like "How Blue Can You Get," "Worry, Worry," and "You Upset Me Baby" to what's essentially his adopted hometown crowd (by his own account, King had already played the theater hundreds of times). They give him a hero's welcome. In fact, the audience's screaming enthusiasm is distracting. But rarely has a love-fest of this magnitude between a performer and fans been documented. --Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Regally Overrated
I can't believe the touch of B.B. King. I enjoy his playing immensely. I know this album gets buried in accolades. But I don't like it. The quality is poor and, differing from other's opinions, the crowd noise takes away from the music. B.B. said, in so many words, that Live at the Regal was far from his choice as his best recording. Typically, he said he wouldn't argue with success--and left it at that. There are so many good albums by B.B. You can't go wrong for $4.65 for the "Ultimate Collection". Sure it doesn't have them all--but it has quite a few of his great songs, including a few from Live at the Regal. I would steer clear of this selection. Or I'll send you mine for free!

5-0 out of 5 stars You Really Have To Hate Music To Not Like This
One of the first things people notice when listening to B.B. King's Live At The Regal album is that the response of the audience is rapturous, almost like the congregation at a Pentecostal church. There's a reason for this. This is simply the natural response of anyone hearing the King of the Blues at the peak of his powers.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Blues Timemachine
Absolutely one of the finest live albums of all times.I bought this album because it was listed as one of the top 100 guitar albums of all time in Guitar Player Magazine. You get lightning in a bottle here with BB King at the height of his powers. The audience is alive and you can feel the young woman hyperventilating and swooning to BB King's rendition of some blues classics. His voice is flawless, still velvety smooth, especially when compared with later live albums by BB King. There is the perfect mixture of BB King's introductions or setups for each tune, guitar, vocals and audience reaction. The sound is immaculate, balanced and clear. His guitar playing is efficient and his timing is perfect. It makes you wonder why more recent "live albums" lack the spontaneity and quality found in this recording. The only regret is the album is not longer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars His greatest Live Recording Ever!
Dr. John once again proves he is the boss with the hot sauce, and one of the great live jazz/funk keyboard performers of all-time.His live recordings are so good, that his studio recordings are often overlooked. His unmistakable New Orleans drawl is one of kind, making this release his best live performance ever. The tunes are rocking, with takes on "Tipitina", "Such a Night", Right Place Wrong Time", "Down By The Riverside Medly", and "Goodnight Irene", which is an atomic finale.Don't pass up an opportunity to see this cat live if you ever get the chance, because he truly is a rock/jazz/funk treasure."Trippin'Live" is one of the best get up and have fun recordings that I have ever heard, and ranks as quite possibly Dr. Johns greatest live album ever.Don't miss this gem.

3-0 out of 5 stars Voice-over kills what should have been a great cd
The music on this live CD is spectacular, as satisfying as anything Mac has ever recorded. But I'm downgrading this to a 3 stars because of the horrible decision by the producer to have the first minute of every song destroyed by having a superimposed recording of Dr. John verbally giving us his thoughts about the song. The first minute of the actual music as a result remains only a distant fade in the background. And for me, the instrumental introduction of the song, where the doctor is playing his butt off, is often the best.Mac gets an A+ for his efforts; the producer gets an F for his bonehead move.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Great Doctor Serves It Up Hot and Spicy
This is a great live CD which really captures the versatility of Dr. John(he even plays guitar on this album). The songs are great all the waythrough-not a bad song (or story) on the album.Buy this album is you likeNew Orleans Funk Blues.Buy this album if you like music at all.Buy thisalbum if you want to know what music is.Just buy it!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Grossly under-estimated blues performer
I first saw Bryan Lee performing at the 2000 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and was left wondering why I hadn't heard of him before. He's obviously been around for a while and can play the blues in a unique style that's his own. I recommend any CD's of his and this latest one has him playing & singing even better than before.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bryan Lee, Live and Dangerous
Although I am a big Bryan Lee fan, this is not his best work. The "Friday Night" and "Saturday Night" as still his best live CD's.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Braille Blues Daddy!
I didn't really know Bryan Lee before this album. Amazon just kept his name in front of me till I gave in and bought it. I guess suggestive selling really does work. Born in Wisconsin, Lee lives in New Orleans and has recorded for the past 14 years. for a Montreal label. No one can say he doesn't get around. Recorded in Montreal, "Live and Dangerous" is a smokin set from a talented blues singer and guitarist who flew under my radar for far too long. By the way, I liked the album well enough to buy two more of his. Just thought you should know. Enjoy! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Better Than Naked Ladies (And Mango Daquiris Too!)
A New Orleans native, I stopped in at the Old Absinthe Bar for a Sazerac on my way to taking out-of-town guests to a strip club. There was a blues band on the stage fronted by a heavy-set guy dressed all in white. His voice was pretty good, and we were into the music, but when Bryan Lee ripped into his first solo our jaws just dropped.Maybe we'd heard that kind of playing on a blues CD once or twice, but none of us ever imagined we could just walk into a bar off the street, buy our "one drink minimum," and hear someone wail like that. His companion musicians were superb as well.My guests forgot all about the strippers. We sat, hardly talking to each other, until Mr. Lee left the stage for the last time. You'll never hear exactly what we heard. The blues bar was gone long before Hurricane Katrina, another victim to the epidemic of mango-flavored daquiris. But this CD is about as close as you can expect from a live recording. It's the way I'd like to remember my home city.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice live blues album
This was my introduction to Bryan Lee and I was not dissapointed. This is really a fine example of how good blues can sound live. There are some really nice guests that appear on this also, by the way the same lineup was also on the Saturday night disc, this should really have come out as a double live album. James Cotton is on this and although he does not wail the same as he once did it is still James Cotton.
3-0 out of 5 stars good, but not as good as the prior reviews
When I found out (not from Amazon) that Frank Marino was on this album, plus KWS, I almost bought it sight unseen, but I gave the samples a listen and then decided to pick this and the Saturday night (part II) up.Read more
