5-0 out of 5 stars I love this CD!
Let me first say that I do NOT generally like "live" albums. But, this is fantastic. I am a huge Tab Benoit fan and this CD is one of his best. According to Tab, he does not try to blow you away; he creates a "feeling" and lets the music flow from that feeling. Thats exactly what happens here. Tab's brand of blues is peppered with cajun hot sauce without sounding campy or silly. The highs are high and the lows are oh so low. All of his CDs have a "live" feel to them; this one also has an audience. Its just great music .

4-0 out of 5 stars He's Genuine
I haven't lived in New Orleans in a while, but I did live there long enough to recognize real Tiptinas style cuts, when I hear them. This guy delivers that sound, in grand style. If you are a fan of N'Awlins style soul/blues, as I am, this CD will give you your fix. Blues fans of Keb Mo will hear some similarities. Tab's guitar playing has that similar "fuzzy" quality to it. But Tab is definitely on a tighter track when he kicks out the Albert Collins riffs on "Too Many Dishes." It's almost as if I were put into a Sherman and Peabody wayback machine to a live Tips/Collins gig, via 1983. 3-0 out of 5 stars Solid Jams
Although a fan of Tab's, this CD leaves me wanting.Don't get me wrong its a good listen a well worth purchasing for fans, but it doesn't grab me the way Nice and Warm and Standing on Banks do.If you are a fan and looking at buying it, you won't be disappointed, but if you're new to Tab you'd do better to get one of other CDs first. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Will likely satisfy fans of the now defunct Splinter Group
The legacy of any band should in part be tempered by its live recordings. Though we are fortunate to this two-CD collection "Soho Live at Ronnie Scotts" by the Peter Green Splinter Group, the session does little to enhance the band's legacy nor does it undermine the studio work.

Editorial Review

Louisiana-born Lonnie Brooks is an underrated blues great, capable of dishing out swamp-rock, bittersweet melodies, and fire- breathing rave-ups. The pyrotechnics won out in this 1987 live performance, recorded at B.L.U.E.S. Etcetera on his adopted home turf, Chicago. Brooks's "Two-Headed Man" and his take on Freddie King's "Hideaway"--which bookend the CD--find him plying slick, screaming string-bends and gutsy vocals that mix back-road gravel with down-home charm. It's the latter that makes numbers like "Got Me By the Tail" and "Eyeballin'" such colorful, appealing stories. They reveal Lonnie's still-vital country roots. At times the band plays with the velocity--and ferocity--of a guided missile. But Brooks is always at the controls. Read more

One of the most happy blues albums, this one recorded at a Chicagoan Club, reveals all of the magic of Lonnie's gutural voice and his really fast way to play guitar. The best sets are "One More Shot" and thesensational version of "Hideaway",plus the emotional"In theDark"! 5-0 out of 5 stars If you love Bloomfield...
The previous reviews seem to divide on the issue of sound quality. So let me say that, especially on the first track, the sound quality is about third-rate. But the music itself--first-rate. For someone like myself who has spent a good amount of time listening to music from 78 RPM records (Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, for example) the sound quality is just not an issue. If you're a casual listener, then skip this one. But if you're passionate about this kind of music, and especially if you love Bloomfield, particularly in his early years, you need this. The band is on fire throughout, caught up in that intense level of mutual exploration that is like the start of a wild affair. And like a wild affair, it burned itself out. Within a year Bloomfield had moved on and Butterfield reportedly never played the song again. But here, thanks to keyboard player Mark Naftalin, is the equivalent of some flowers pressed in a book, only the heat is still all there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bloomfield's Baby=GENIUS!!!
If you're like me and dig jam-oriented music, then get this disc. The studio version of this song is mind-blowing, but when they played it live, it turned into a whole new monster. These live cuts are on par with the likes of Cream, John Coltrane(sorry guys, he's still gotcha beat on time!), and The Grateful Dead. I just love it when musicians can churn out this type of stuff. It says something about the caliber of musicians in the 1960's. Everyone gets hung up on the "drug" aspect of the decade, but folks, let me tell you something, the 1960's was probably the most productive decade not just for rock, but for every form of music out there. It's too bad that this great movement had to end and evolve into what we have today. Anyway, enough of my ranting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking historical performances
When I left the Beatles and Beach Boys for other forms of rock and roll, I found the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and East-West.This album was SO good that my mother even let me play it a high volume and eventually drove me to the Fillmore to see the band when I was in 9th grade.Unfortuntely, I did not know that Bloomfield had just left the group and was about to form the Electric Flag (a group I was able to see live later in 1967). But I still had the album East-West and aquired their earlier work, which also a powerful set of songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars And I though Joe Cocker had the best hands!
Goosebumps.Incredable artistry.I only wish I could fly from Oklahoma City to his next gig.

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest New Orleans piano player.
This is Booker near the end of his career, playing in a dinky New Orleans bar and usually half out of his head. But the fingers still knew what they were doing, even on a piano that sounds as if it's strung with rubberbands. For an introduction to Booker's playing I'd recommend "NewOrleans Piano Wizard," Booker in front of a huge audience playing asuperb grand piano. But Booker freaks can't get enough of his playing, andI'm one of them.

For most of the 1970s, keyboardist Merl Saunders was Jerry Garcia's main musical foil away from his main band, allowing the Grateful Dead icon a chance to really broaden his horizons. 5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
This CD is the best of all 3 Keystone releases. Period. If you are gonna get one, get this one. "Like a Road" drips with emotion and "Funny Valentine" is very jazzy, loose, and will impress any music fan.Worth the price for just these 2 tracks alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Burning up the Keystone
Live At Keystone, Vol. 2 highlights two of the most fabulous muscicans of the 20th century.Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders share the pinnacle of their careers on this funky live album. Both products of the San Francisco counter culture, Saunders and Garcia colaborated many times during the 70's and 80's at the famous Keystone Auditorium. The two effortlessly bounce their electric emotions off of eachother throughout the entire album.Saunders and Garcia jam out almost every track on the album, and their raport with the audience can be heared in the background.Live At Keystone, Vol. 2 is an album that cannot be passed up by music lovers of any kind. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Basie swing.
This cd is pretty darn good. At first I was turned off by the decision to include "New York Voices" on the album. I'm not much of a vocal jazz fan, but after a few times listening to the cd, I have really grown toenjoy NYV. The basie band, of course, swings like crazy. They soundwonderful! I had a chance to see the band live the same year this albumcame out. What a treat to see Grover Mitchell and the gang live. Wow, theywere smokin. My favorite track on this disc is "Buggin'". Greattrumpet solo. Get this disc if you like the new Basie Orchestra led myGrover Mitchell. ... Read more

Editorial Review

It's Mardi Gras time every time soulful singer-guitarist Snooks Eaglin starts to play, and this live recording catches the Crescent City eccentric in full glory. Eaglin, known in New Orleans as "the human jukebox," leads a trio of New Orleans stalwarts anchored by legendary bayou bassist George Porter Jr. through a typically wide-ranging set spiced with his fluid but unpredictable guitar work. Eaglin's guitar lines may twist and turn like the Mississippi River, but his licks are neither lazy nor laid-back. He's also a solid, if admittedly idiosyncratic, vocalist who effectively personalizes Stevie Wonder's "Boogie on Reggae Woman" with some swamp soul and totally reinvents the Isley Brothers' hit "It's Your Thing." Eaglin delivers more traditional New Orleans fare, such as Fats Domino's "Josephine," Earl King's "Soul Train," and his own classic party favorite "I Went to the Mardi Gras," with equally satisfying results. The deep blues workout "Black Night" and a reprise of producer-songwriter Dave Bartholomew's gem "Yours Truly," Eaglin's first regional hit more than four decades ago, allow the boisterous blind virtuoso to exhibit still more of his expansive musical reach. 5-0 out of 5 stars One Good Album!
Excellent live album - makes you feel like you are there!Guitar sounds great in a variety of settings.Very different from most of your average blues albums.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bow down before Snooks!
One of the most spectacular practicioners of the lost art of rhythm guitar(to say nothing of his lead work), Snooks can literally burn up the fretboard. He is a living repository of 1000's of tunes and a link to atype of traditional singing and playing that died with the advent of modernrecording technology. To call this music 'blues' or 'soul' is a disservice, labels cannot contain the music of Snooks Eaglin. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lonnie Mack in person
I love this cd. I saw Lonnie Mack play in 1992 at the blues fest in Peoria,IL. I got to go backstage and the man and even partied with him! He is very nice and down to earth. It was an experience that I will never forget.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites
I've owned this CD for many years, and it's one of a handful that's always on the play list. Probably not a month goes by when I don't listen to it once. Phenomenal guitar, a lot of energy, and excellent sound quality for a live performance. Mack is one of the great guitar players and makes it all seem effortless. My favorite track is Stop, but I pretty much listen to the whole album every time.

5-0 out of 5 stars LONNIE MACK ROCKS!!
lonnie mack is a guitar genius with an incredible singing voice, too!.....this cd is live and it is great....everyone who likes blues/rock should have this cd in their collection.....lonnie single-handedly bridged the old style of rock guitar playing with the new style back in the 60's; he is a national treasure! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Golden Girls of Blues !!!
I am their big fan since I was a college student when I first heard their songs. I am glad this album is recorded in Wolf Trap, Virginia, where is my neighborhood and I visit there once in a while for great concerts. That makes me feel even closer and intimate to this live album.5-0 out of 5 stars Love These Ladies!!
This CD was given to me by a fabulous blues/boogie musician, and she sure knew what she liked here! This is a wonderful CD, with tunes you'll find yourself singing around the house (and sometimes just little snippets to annoy the men in your lives, ladies)!Love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best There Is Of The Blues
This album is fabulous and is a must for any blues fan who enjoys listening to the real thing. Being from Chattanooga, the home of Bessie Smith, these ladies make me proud of the Blues Heritage of this town. Oneof my favorite cuts is "You'll Never Get Me Out Of Your Mind"written and sung by Anne Rabson."Mr. Insurance Man" sung byAndra Faye makes me want to start selling policies. Gaye Adegoalola wroteand sings "Silver Beaver," one of my other favorites on thealbum. It makes you want to see it, pet it and and kiss it's cute little nose. There is something on this album for everyone. It's a must for theblues collector. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Captures the Raucous Rawness
The most famous Hound Dog Taylor quote was: "When I die, they'll say: 'He couldn't play sh*t, but he sure made it sound good.'" This is a man who understands his appeal. Taylor played a beat-up guitar, and he cranked on the thing, playing distorted, screeching notes. But god, it DID sound good. And as the quote implies, he had the personality to go with the raucous, raw music that he played. Which is why this album is so good. It's live, so you can hear the sound imperfections, the screaming crowd, and Taylor's off-kilter banter and sense of humor. And that's probably the perfect way to listen to Taylor. To put it all another way: He plays a version of "She'll Be Coming 'round the Mountain" that makes you want to get up and dance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hound Dog rocks da house!!!!!!!!!
Hound Dog's searing slide guitar and vocals tear you to the quick with a depth and passion unequalled nowadays. This rocks!!

Editorial Review

Perhaps no musician more defines a city and a sound than ChuckBrown does Washington, D.C. and go-go. At the age of 67, the godfatherof go-go has entertained three generations and still plays to thousandsof fans at least three times a week in the D.C./Maryland/Virginiatriangle. Go-go is the same age as hip-hop, and shares all of its urbanbombast, but it's a live-band thing, and a community thing too. Whendisco DJs threatened to displace cabaret bands in the '70s, Chuckinvented the kinetic, syncopated go-go backbeat and put togethercontinuous funkified sets of originals and covers linked by generouscrowd shout-outs and sizzling percussive breakdowns. This recent set, featuring appearances by Trouble Funk and Rare Essence luminaries, hasit all: Chuck's exquisite baritone, brilliant musicianship, go-gofiedhip-hop, blues and jazz, and breakbeats you can fit a trailer into. THIS IS THE REAL LIVE GROOVE OF GO GO MUSIC. CHUCK BROWN WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. I AM NOW LIVING IN SUFFOLK, VA, WHICH TO ME IS BAMMA.ANYWAY, CHUCK BROWN, IS THE ONE TRUE GO GO MICKEY.HE IS THE ORIGINGAL GODFATHER OF GO GO. PEACE OUT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not my game exactly, but I can't stop playing it
Go-go is D.C.'s indigenous funk, but I'll freely admit that I'm way less familiar with it than I really should be. This realization came upon me with astonishing force upon listening to this record, which is unlike anything else I've ever heard except Chuck's actual live show, which I had to check out after hearing this CD. Editorial Review

Fleet-fingered fretman Monte Montgomery has quietly carved out a name for himself on the competitive Austin music scene as a poll-winning guitar hero and a must-see live act. What's more, on a scene known for blazing Stevie Ray-style Stratocasters, he's done it all with an acoustic guitar! Montgomery's first live effort, a double disc recorded at Fort Worth's palatial performing-arts venue Caravan of Dreams, showcases his guitar prowess and the popular appeal of his live band's propulsive power. Most of the acoustic rock-oriented material comes from Montgomery, as self-penned staples from his live show are interspersed with such favorites as "Wishing Well," "Whirlwind," and "When Will I" from his two studio albums. Montgomery and the band make the most of the live setting, stretching out the songs--five go past 10 minutes--with creative instrumental interplay. Montgomery also successfully mixes in a diverse selection of cover tunes, including a percussion-driven rendition of Fleetwood Mac's "World Turning" and a radically reworked, almost satiric take on Merle Haggard's "Silver Wings." TheHall & Oates hit "Sara Smile" and Dire Straits' "Romeo and Juliet," the latter the 13-minute album closer, also appear in personalized versions spotlighting Montgomery's aggressive acoustic-guitar excellence and his crowd-pleasing personality as a live entertainer. 3-0 out of 5 stars Monte Montgomery Live at the Caravan of Dreams
I have had the privlidge of seeing him live in San Antonio a few times and he is great. However this live CD could be better. I would highly recomend the "Let Me In" CD by Ruben V. Or any other CD by Ruben V. He is the best Guitarist in Texas today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
Start to finish this album is amazing. When one disc finishes, I put the other one in.A must have album.

4-0 out of 5 stars Virtuosity is a little boring
I don't doubt that Monte Montgomery is the best guitar player in the whole state of Texas, and I don't doubt that he's something to see in person, but all in all I found this live CD a bit repetitive and lacking in variety.Too many of the songs sound the same: virtuoso guitar licks and heavy drums.

Editorial Review

The 73-year-old soul-blues master returns to form with this CD, recorded in Malaco's Jackson, Mississippi, studios and at Alabama's famed Muscle Shoals Sound. The playing is right and tight, from the graceful guitar fills of session aces Reggie Young and Jimmy Johnson on "My Sunday's Comin' Soon" to the Hammond B-3 organ tones that permeate the album. But what's best, of course, is hearing Bland tear into good tunes penned by a who's who of modern deep-soul songwriters including George Jackson ("I Caught the Blues from Someone Else") and Rue Davis ("I've Got the Blues at Midnight"). There's also a re-make of Z.Z. Hill's "I'm a Blues Man" that splits the difference between Delta dust and throbbing funk, with its acoustic Dobro intro giving way to pumping bass and a burst of loud, sweet electric slide. But most of these numbers stick to the kind of textbook arrangements Bland helped perfect with albums like his 1961 classic Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 73 YearsOld And Still Got The Blues
This is album number 12 on Malaco Records and it keeps the successful formula of horn-drenched soul blues and smokey vocals going. At 73 years old it is expected that Mr. Bland would have lost some of that legendary voice (years of cigarettes no doubt)- and he has. Nevertheless, although no longer impressive in concert, he still sounds great in the studio. Bland is once again presented with sympathetic production and a strong set of songs, mostly from the usual hit-making suspects like George Jackson (the great "I Caught The Blues From Someone Else"- one of the highlights of this disc), Robert Johnson & Sam Mosley (Artie White's "You Hit The Nail On The Head" & "Baby What's Wrong With You") & Larry Addison ("My Sunday's Comin' Soon", the gorgeous "The Only Thing Missing Is You" and the epic album closer "Ghetto Nights"). But the best cut is "This Man-Woman Thing" with that upbeat horn-filled soul feel that the company is famous for- a sure-fire hit. Also, included is an understated cover of the Louis Armstrong chestnut, "What A Wonderful World". Very satisfying! ... Read more
