5-0 out of 5 stars Over 2 hours of great music
Recorded around the holidays in 1999 and produced by Warren Haynes, there's some fine jams here. Side 1 is highlighted by a lengthy set from Derek Trucks, his band, his future wife Susan Tedeschi and their work is excellent. Side 2 is highlighted by a Gov't Mule set and with Little Milton, Derek, Susan, Johnny Neel, Jimmy Herring and others all adding to the songs. The finale is a lengthy "Merry Christmas Baby" with Little Milton, Haynes, and Tedeschi sharing vocals and Haynes, Trucks, and Herring on guitars. If you are a fan of the Allman Brothers, may of these names will be familiar to you. There's alot of talent on display here.

4-0 out of 5 stars warren haynes and some more
well, if you enjoyed gov't mule or haynes' solo recordings, you can put this double cd just beside them. so really there are lots of good musicians playing here, but when you here warren' s guitar, you can watch the sky becoming clear. a special mention should go to derek trucks, who is playing really good, but i prefer to listen to him playing with allman bros. band. a cd to mention to your friends loving rockblues.

4-0 out of 5 stars wanna jam?
This cd starts out with some acoustic numbers from Edwin McCain. They hold up to repeated listening because of Warren Haynes' tasteful and impressive acoustic lead and slide playing. The Derek Trucks Band is as an exciting band that is working today and their set is a joy. But it gets even more thrilling as virtually each extended jam features one great artist after another. The Cry of Love set adds hard rock and is alittle weak. Then Gov't Mule takes over. It's set is more like, but maybe even beter than, disc one (as opposed to the stellar disc two) to "With a Little Help from Our Friends" and holds up well to repeated listening. "But" you may wonder, "isn't this just another one of those blues based extended jam albums that I already have in abundance in my collection?" No! Herring, Haynes and Trucks deliver (together no less) on song after song on this cd, plus, and I must say surprisingly, the sound quality here is outstanding. One last thing, Haynes, McKay and the various and asundry good friend/guest vocalists can belt it out -- not an embarrassing note among them. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice live blues album
This was my introduction to Bryan Lee and I was not dissapointed. This is really a fine example of how good blues can sound live. There are some really nice guests that appear on this also, by the way the same lineup was also on the Friday night disc, this should really have come out as a double live album. James Cotton is on this and although he does not wail the same as he once did it is still James Cotton.
3-0 out of 5 stars pretty good, but not 5-star good
When I found out (not from Amazon) that Frank Marino was on this album, plus KWS, I almost bought it sight unseen, but I gave the samples a listen and then decided to pick this and the Friday night (part I) up.5-0 out of 5 stars Johnny Blue
Bryan Lee's Live at the Old Absinthe Bar Saturday Night CD is without a doubt one of the best hard core live blues CD's around. Too bad not too many people have heard of him. He has a great band behind him and his guests are not too shabby either (Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Frank Marino). The Friday night CD is quite good also. If you love the blues, this CD is rather entertaining and should be in your collection. It is addicting to listen to since it is so good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Live Highwayman
This CD seems to be left in my CD player and played over and over.It is just a fantabulous disc.I've been to Chord on Blues in St. Charles, IL where this was recorded but have yet to catch Tinsley there. For a guy from Atlanta he gets there often and I intend to see him there on one of his next visits. It is one solid CD, get one for the house and one for the car.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth The Wait
We've been hoping for a Tinsley live album for a long time now.His only other is the wonderful mid-80's Live At The Moonshadow, as leader of his ass kicking quartet, The Heartfixers. But Live! Highwayman is surely definitive and well worth the wait. The band is in top form, and Tinsley's energy, creativity and musical prowess are at an all time high!

2-0 out of 5 stars keeps getting worse
i was once a big tinsley ellis fan enjoying such albums as fanning the flames and trouble in mind. but what was once a fresh sound and fresh guitar has become increasingly stale. having seen tinsley live three times he sure left all his good stuff at home on this album, he even manages to screw up highway man which is one of my favorites. i know tinsley has felt he hasnt gotten his just due as a performer but efforts like this won't help his cause. ... Editorial Review

Released in 1979, this live album is a gem, from the enthusiastic audience (who cheer every line of opener "Mannish Boy") to Muddy Waters's killer guitar to vocals that tease and deliver by turns. The slide work is what to listen for here, especially on "Howling Wolf," where Waters gives any guitar virtuoso a run for his money. There are other special moments as well, including the absolutely killer timing on "She's Nineteen Years Old," the rock-bottom-deep vocals on "Baby Please Don't Go," and the slow sensuality of "Deep Down in Florida." The only shortcoming of this CD is that it's so short: there are only seven songs here, which will leave any listener wanting more. --Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Muddy rocks it live
Muddy's vocals: dead on, excellent as always. The band: great. Sounds like a pretty good blues album huh? Well, it's more than pretty good, it's amazing. On some of his later albums, great as they were, Muddy played less of his trademark slide guitar; well on this recording, it is the slide playing that steals the show. Muddy positively wails, putting most slide players to shame, dropping the jaws of the audience, and turning great recordings into postively essential and timeless ones. I cannot emphasize enough the greatness of the slide playing on this record; Muddy just takes you to another place with his scary slide.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the music and performance but DO NOT BUY
Here's why not to buy it: there is an expanded version containing the whole set of this concert with about twice as much tracks

4-0 out of 5 stars Can't get enough?
For all those who dig this album--or are thinking of picking it up--look for the 2 disc special edition.

Editorial Review

When folk revivalists all of a sudden became fascinated with country-blues performers of the early 20th century, no one had to go into the sticks to find Reverend Gary Davis. Though he'd stopped recording, Davis was an active street singer and preacher in Harlem throughout the 1940s. In the 1950s, folklorists, fans, and followers began to seek him out to hear him play, record him, and learn from him. Stefan Grossman, now a respected guitarist in his own right, was one of his longtime students, and he's compiled this wonderful three-disc box set, complete with detailed song notes and an essay that explores Davis's pre-New York days. Disc 1 features rare recordings made by Columbia University student John Gibbons in 1958 and 1959, and it focuses mostly on Davis's instrumental prowess: a thoroughly matchless fingerpicking guitar style that fused bits of jazz, blues, and ragtime into a highly personal technique. In addition to the many instrumentals on the first disc, there are some of Davis's most spellbinding vocal performances, especially "Crucifixion" (which blends singing and preaching) and "Don't Know Where to Go." Disc 2 includes home recordings from the mid-1960s, while the final disc of live recordings shows off his stage charisma and command. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Rich and Rewarding Box Set
Rev. Gary Davis is a giant of acoustic blues & gospel who is enjoying renewed interest. This impressive box set contains superior sound compared to the Riverside albums. Listening to the mostly live versions of classic Davis songs on this set yields rich rewards. Given to improvisation on many songs, he varies his picking and sometimes changes the verse order or the words in the verses. For example, the album Gospel, Blues and Street Songs on the Riverside Records label has a studio version (1956) of Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning that has Davis beginning the song with a verse, followed by the Chorus. By the time Davis plays it live at Columbia University sometime around '59 he is starting the song with the Chorus. Furthermorethe verse that began, "Sister, don't stop praying . . . " is now, "Father, don't stop praying . . . " He also adds a new verse. The song Whistlin' Blues is noted by Grossman as the only song in all of Davis' recorded repertoire in an altered tuning (low to high - DADF#AB). The set contains songs that are not available anywhere else.
5-0 out of 5 stars Unexpected, terrific music.Too marvelous for words!!!
Blind Gary Davis, best known as Reverend Gary Davis, since he bacame a preacher,1933,may be the most terrific, outstanding guitar player of the blues and gospel history with Blind Blake. His ragtime style, combined with this particular South Carolina touch, makes him one of the most gifted and impressive musicians of all times.Born in Laurens County,South Carolina,April 30,1896,he lived enough to be rediscovered in the early sixties, while he was a street singer in Harlem;he lived until 1972,and died May 5,one week after his 76th birthday,on his way to a concert date.THis three CD set, full of treasures,is issued by Stefan Grossman, who was a pupil of the Reverend. These are unissued recordings: CD 1 was recorded at the Columbia University,1958-1959;CD 2 was recorded at home,1964-1966;and CD 3 comes from concert dates,1962-1966.Of course,it includes some amazing music;Gary Davis was really alone in his field, that way of playing and singing sacred songs with this Carolina touch;his incredible, extremely difficult picking style (surely the most difficult one with Blind Blake's) ,with many ragtime touches,is a real delight. And I don't speak of the guitar he's playing;I just hope I'll have the opportunity to play such an instrument once in my life.5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have For Fan's And Students Of Reverend Gary Davis
As a former student of Brother Davis($5 a guitar lesson), I was thrilled to hear fresh material after all these years. Even the old familiar tunes have yet new variations. I can't wait to check some of them out on the guitar. This three CD set is really a fantastic addition to my Reverend Gary Davis collection. I wonder what else Stephan Grossman(Demons Producer) is sitting on???...Joel ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars popa chubby ass kicker
I bought the cd and the dvd to this concert and popa just kicks ass. I have his other live concert on dvd and i believe this one might be a little better but they are both very good. This music is very raw i didnt know very many of the songs but got into them right away i love chubbys voice and his lyrics are one of a kind if you like straight ahead blues rock with a lot of guitar playing you should enjoy this very much. Thanks for reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars True to form
While the songs on this CD are a little more reserved than I've come to expect from Popa, I find the CD to be very good. The one time that I saw him live he played a subdued first set and then proceeded to blow the roof off of the place in his second set. Still, I don't think you can go wrong with a live offering from PC.

1-0 out of 5 stars Left Me Weak
Having seen Poppa Chubby play live and having bought his other live CD, I bought this CD with high-hopes of listening to a hard-driving rock/blues piece of music. Instead, I found it to be an uninspiring, lacking in energy and intensity, and ho-hum live CD. Poppa doesn't seem to be into it and neither does the audience. If you are looking for a gritty, loud, greasy, boisterous, blues/rock CD, this isn't it.

Editorial Review

Nobody plays rockin' blues with more heads-down authority than the current edition of the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Still led by singer-harmonica ace Kim Wilson, whose prowess on the instrument marks him as one of its all-time greats, the band surges through this February 2000 concert at full throttle. Which means the rhythm section keeps a flat-four chug percolating, pianist-organist Gene Taylor makes like Johnny Johnson on steroids, and Kid Ramos dishes out rhythm 'n' leads with reverb-drenched efficiency, while Wilson keeps his pushy baritone thundering above it all. This CD is a perfect example of Texas blues. It's as close to hearing them lived ( as I did last week) as possible.I recommend it to anyone who likes good old fashioned American music. M

4-0 out of 5 stars T-Bird blast
The California Geoseismic Institute must have sworn The Big Quake had hit LA when these guys hit the stage and let loose on "The Things I Used to Do."David "Kid" Ramos romps-there's no better word-on guitar behind the bulldozer drumwork of Steve Hodges, Willie Campbell's relentless bass, and Gene Taylor's cracking piano. However, it's Kim's love of singing that makes him the perfect lead vocalist:he can hold a phrase in his voice like Aretha Franklin until the dials jump on their own (check it out on the aforementioned "Things"), and there's that great baritone barrel chest to support it.Even better, when he grabs the harmonica and starts to pump, it literally buzzes like a giant barber's electric shears.Whooo, you can feel it right down to your shoes! This is what a house party should look and sound like.

4-0 out of 5 stars Big T-Birds Sound Live!!
In this February 2000 concert disc, the Fabulous Thunderbirds eschew the raw rocking sound that made their early records sound so vital for a full band sound complete with horns and (on the closing number) female background singers. Kim Wilson, like BB King before him, obviously sees that many concertgoers want a fuller sound when listening to their music live and the additional musicians certainly provide that sound. The horns in particular have the effect of taking some of the covers, such as "Wrap It Up" and "Things I Used to Do," away from pure blues and back to the rhythm and blues roots they originated from. Kim Wilson's vocals on these tracks are fabulous, and Kid Ramos plays some stinging guitar as well. Old favorites "Tuff Enuff" and "She's Tuff" sound tougher and finer than ever, while "My Babe" takes on the full-throttle rocking power of a high speed locomotive. Fans of Kim Wilson's harmonica playing may feel a little shortchanged; "Early Every Morning" is the only harp showcase on the album, with Wilson blowing like a maniac. A glorious, if all too brief, moment of solo improvisation. Overall, the band is tight, the numbers are together, and the music features many rockable, danceable moments, even though Live, like most such discs, cannot replicate the excitement of an in-person appearance. ... Growing up in Southern Illinois, it was a weekly event for Twist and the Mellow Fellows to sneak me (being underage) into Merlins to hear them play. What more can I say? They were phenomenal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Memories!
Saw the original Big Twist only once before he died.Recorded a tape and played it constantly. The CD is wonderful, only wish that it had included "Childrens Blues"which is a favorite of mine.He was a greatbluesman and played great Chicago Style Blues.Everyone who hasn't heardthis band, should!

If you don't own this cd, you should 'covet' the thought of owning it. Larry is no longer with us physically, but those of us that were privey to the wonderful world of his 'down home Chicago blues', will never get himout of our system. In his "hayday', he had one of the most grippingblues "bands" going. His voice alone, and the way he deliveredit, was truly the essensce of what blues IS. For those that didn't get achance to kow him or his music while he was alive, I feel sorry that youdidn't. The redeeing grace is, that, through 'modern technology',you canhave this experience now. Do you want to party? Then you need this CD. Thisis the best of all the "Twist" CD's. Turn it up! 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Live Blues from one of Blues best dou's
Live from 1974 Montreaux jazz festival Buddy Guy and Junior Wells play with Pine Top Penkins and Bill Wyman.Sound quality is excellent, set selection is a nice combination of slow and fast tunes and Buddy and Junior do a nice job sharing the lime light.Buddy does a nice job of tone it down for Junior while still providing plenty of heat.Great rap with the crowd as well.If you get a chance to see Buddy live, please make the effort to see one of the last great blues men. This is a great CD for people who love live blues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely Smokin'!
This album captures two of the best blues masters at their best in the mid-seventies. Blues was not on the radar during those years, but Buddy Guy and Junior Wells show how the blues was kept alive to an appreciative audience in Europe. (They even mention how they are not appreciated at home!)
5-0 out of 5 stars Smokin' Indeed!
What else can be said? Buddy and Junior at top form! A highlight is Buddy's heartfelt introduction to Ten Years Ago, thanking the European fans for making them feel more at home sometimes then theyfeel while on tour in the States.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whets your appetite for the bootlegs
Most Rory fans rave about his live performances, but for a long time I preferred his studio LPs. Then I discovered the Rory bootlegs, and my opinion forever changed. Like other reviewers of this product, I already owned 3 of the 4 CDs in this package, but I wanted to get the fantastic fourth CD to complete my collection of "authorized" releases. This package is great; however, if you're even a lukewarm Rory fan (and can there be such a thing?), you will find it worthwhile to search online for bootlegs of Rory's live performances.

4-0 out of 5 stars Messin' With the Kid
I highly enjoy Rory's playing and although I already own the 3 previously released albums, I was especially interested in the un-released material and booklet. I was not diapointed in both sound and quality of the new material, it rocks! My only problem, and also the reason for the four stars, was there was no booklet included. If any one knows where I can get a copy please let me know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Irelands Greatest Loss.
I have been a Rory Gallagher fan since I was 14 and have all of his recordings on both vinyl and cd.This packaged cd Let's Go To Work is exellent value despite the fact that I have 3 of the 4 cds already. The photography alone is stunning on the sleeves of each cd,but for me the most facinating thing and certainly any die hard Rory Gallagher fan will understand me when I say,the cover versions of La Bamba, the inclusion of a little Jailhouse Rock and The Beatles Revolution are amazing as I personally have never known Rory to be so flambouyant live in concert or on studio albums in the past. For these tracks alone it's worth every penny. This cd Meeting With The G-Man was recorded shortly before Rory sadly passed away, and as I say it's worth it's weight in gold.'Nuff Said.Slan Agus Beannacht. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I was there!
I was there in Denmark August 1991, at Skandbourg. That's the farthest I have ever travled to see Walter play. I do a road trip every year to catch a few shows now that he tours in the US. Walter is so amazing. Not only is he a guitar god he has an incredible voice to match. Check out www.waltertrout.com go to the questbook and see what his fans (TROUTHEADS) have to say about Walter Trout. Go get his DVD 'Relentless' and see for yourselves. Seeing is believing. Anytime he comes within 500 miles of you get there some way somehow, you won't be disappointed. In fact you'll be amazed.

5-0 out of 5 stars SRV Fan ? Pls continue
Live concerts seem to catch the beat of the moment and this record is no exception. You like guitar blues like Stevie Ray, you'll like this album for sure. I've enjoyed it now for, almost, the past ten years and never seem to loose interest.Read more

Editorial Review

These three CDs document some of the greatest moments ofculture shock in American music. Most of the bluesmen who first came toNewport had never played before audiences so attentive, large, orwhite. And those listening had never experienced anything like Skip James'sblood-chilling whine, Reverend GaryDavis's furious testifying, or Mississippi John Hurt's twirling melodies. Most of the audience, in fact, assumedthe bluesmen were dead. As a cinematic sweep of just what made those countercultural gatherings so exciting and diverse, this set is anunqualified success (though the rather arbitrary and ahistoricalsequencing by blues subgenre is as puzzling as the omission of specificperformance dates). While many tracks have long been available on othercompilations, the unreleased cuts, 11 in all, are revelations, especially Muddy Waters andOtis Spannstrutting through "Flood" and John Lee Hookersinking into the scary groove of "Let's Make It." Just got the CD....a great live recording of some of the foundations of blues...if you want to start collecting the blues, this is a great place to start.A great collection of performers recorded in a live situation.Son House, one of the originators of the delta blues is well represented. This album is grouped into three CDs' that are well stocked with some of the best there is !!!Get this CD....

5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure trove
It's almost hard to believe that this CD exists. So many excellent performances by legendary bluesmen like Son House, John Lee Hooker, Skip James, Muddy Waters and a whole host of others, all recorded live at the legendary Newport Folk Festival. And the sound is amazing, crisp and clear.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Stunning Collection Of Live Performances
If there is a better collection of live blues than this Newport 3 CD set, I haven't heard it. This stunning CD covers 10 years Newport performances during the height of the folk blues revival in the early 60's. Many of the artists were rediscovered by blues enthusiasts like John Fahey, Al "Blind Owl" Wilson and Sam Charters by canvassing remote areas of the south and locating the M.I.A.s of the 1920-30s "race" records. Some of these performers were presumed to be dead, and Newport was their first time in front of an audience in decades. There is not a single throw-away among 16 performers and the 51 (count 'em!)cuts here.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ripping Slide Guitar Blues
I've always been an admirer of Roy Rogers - and I love slide guitar blues - a few of the current best purveyors being Johnny Winter, Sonny Landreth, Rory Block, John Mooney, Dave Hole, and Robert Randolph (pedal steel).Previously, some of Rogers' studio work has been a bit sterile, and sometimes his vocals can be wearing. However, in this case, Roy Rogers has set the standard in the warm, live setting of the Sierra Nevada Brewery "Big Room".All of the interaction with his longtime partner, Norton Buffalo, and the Delta Rhythm Kings, and the audience getting into it, make for an exciting listen. His slide guitar really shimmers and shakes, and all of the cuts (except for one), which were previously recorded on his other albums, really benefit from this live presentation. The recording quality itself is excellent. If you see this album - Get It! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Blues 101 for the entire band....
Want to learn some tunes for an "open mike" blues jam? THEN CHECK THIS DISC OUT!!! There is enough material here to keep the serious blues student busy for months. Drummers, harpists, bassists, and guitarists alike. Each one of these tunes are popular at all blues jams (Am I sounding like Jamey Abersold?) For the price it can't be beat!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good album but...
I have a problem with how this product is advertised. Neither Junior nor Buddy play in any of the extra tracks, and they are not that good either. Buddy only sings the first 3 songs, the rest are Junior's. Buddy plays a killer version of Hideaway, and Junior's sings 'mojo working' almost as good as Muddy Waters. The extra tracks really spoil the fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best blues CD I own
This may not be the best blues CD I will EVER own, but it is definitely the best blues CD I own NOW!Buddy Guy could play circles around Jimmy Page; his playing has speed, grace, and style. And Junior Wells is knownas one of the greatest harmonica players who ever lived, but he was also agreat singer, in fine form here.Listen to his usually low voice reachthose high notes on "Come In This Old House".Wells and Guy werea great team; they do a version of "Messin' With the Kid" tobring the house down.I put this CD on more than any other blues CD I own-- including ones by Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and other greats. ... Bettye LaVette had to be all smiles after she read the reviews for the recent release of her "lost album", THE CHILD OF THE '70S which she recorded in Muscles Schoals for Atlantic Records. It was picked up by a European record company called Arts and Soul and released to ranting raves reviews. The CD is now called SOUVENIRS.Read more
