Editorial Review

Just when it seems that the purr has left Etta James's estimable voice, about halfway through this live concert recorded in 2001 at L.A.'s House of Blues she begins her eternally romantic ballad "At Last," and the years tumble away. James's singing becomes flexible as a tenor saxophone, building to a lovely, serpentine diminuendo, which she caps with an arching phrase that dissipates in a misty exhalation of breath. It's such a beautiful, brilliantly executed performance that it's suddenly clear that for most of this show, the 64-year-old diva played dirty on purpose. So her signatures, "Tell Mama" and "I'd Rather Go Blind" (really, just about everything), are raw and earthy, moan-and-groan R&B milked for every smile and tear. Raunchy, too, since James deploys plenty of her bawdy stage patter and picks numbers like the striptease fantasy "You Can Leave Your Hat On" and the even more obvious "I Just Want to Make Love to You." Her impetuous nature leads her into unpredictable improvisations, like the weird bird calls she warbles during the intro to the ghetto-rocker "All the Way Down," with it's wah-wah guitar and "Theme from Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Burn, Etta, Burn
Since my youth I have had an ear for roots music, whether I was conscious of that fact or not. The original of that interest first centered on the blues, then early rock and roll and later, with the folk revival of the early 1960's, folk music. I have often wondered about the source of this interest. I am, and have always been a city boy, and an Eastern city boy at that. Nevertheless, over time I have come to appreciate many more forms of roots music than in my youth. The subject of the following review is an example.
5-0 out of 5 stars Too many are missing out on GREATNESS
Etta James style has evolved greatly over the decades-----it is merely a matter of personal preference as to which period of her career is her best-----i love her recent work equally as much as her earliest work--she is an artist who continually grows, stretches,& shares her immense talents & life experience w/ her audience. In her most recent years her style has expanded towards jazz---(although she mixes many styles now)--& this recorded live performance is STUNNING!!!!!This performance leans heavily towards "jazzy blues"--I reccomend it highly,JUST BEAUTIFUL. It is as real as it gets---i love this cd,TY ETTA,from the bottom of my heart!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tasty Set!
Some of the other reviews attack this on the basis that it is not as soulful as the 60's and 70's sets that we all know and love.Sure this is not 1962, but the band is on and it is a powerful well produced saucy set.The fact that she can put it out this strong after all of these years is a testament to her artistry. It is a nice blues rock sound and it never dissapointed anyone that has heard it with me.I understand the argument for purity but in this world everything evolves and this one gets a well deserved spot on my shelf next to the classics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One Treasure
The Newport festival hosted some fine releases, the standouts included this one, Duke Ellington's 2 seperate outings, Joe Williams, Monk, all captured on wonderfull rereleases. Yet this one comes close if not the best from Basie and his band playing with greatness from their past and then present with such luminaries as Jimmy Rushing,Joe Williams,Lester Young,Roy Eldridge, wonderful remastered sound..total energy lovely packaged..get it and you won't be sorry especially if you are exploring Basie and Jazz for the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow
"One o' Clock" jump is a historical moment, Here you have Count Basie, Lester Young, Roy Eldridge, and Illionois Jaqucet blowing the place up. You can here people cheering them on in the croud and in the band, and you can tell this was a night to remember. For me the real reason to aquire this gem if for the Lester Young. He is incredible on this recording, a masterpiece

3-0 out of 5 stars Where's the rest, Verve?
So, where is the complete version of this concert? In verve's vault, waiting another 5- 10 years, so they can sell it to you again. They missed a big chance od finnaly releasing this historic concert the way it should be, in a 2 cd edition, 24 bit remastered.Check out the Duke ay Newport release and compare it with this. The music itself is 4 stars at least, Lester was not in his prime anymore, and you can hear it, but Joe Williams is just amazing. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This visceral live recording from April 1, 1980, was broadcast on radio from the Steamboat 1874 club in Stevie Ray Vaughan's adopted hometown, Austin, Texas. It circulated among collectors, and his manager used some of the tape as a demo before Vaughan was signed to Epic Records by John Hammond. Young Stevie Ray's performance bristles with uncorked energy. Vaughan is caught improvising on raw slide guitar, growling through Otis Rush's "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)," and pushing his fretboard speed and vocal limits on Guitar Slim's "They Call Me Guitar Hurricane." Also offered are unpolished versions of tunes that became fan favorites: "Tin Pan Alley," "Love Struck Baby," and "Tell Me." Read more

In the Beginning . . . ironic to say that this was the last and final cd to go into my srv collection, (i don't have the box set, but the thought of it makes me salivate) and it's quite possibly my favorite.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Blues Rock
I have most of SRV's stuff and I was very impressed. Some cover songs, some SRV songs. An excellent mix. Stuff you'll never hear on the radio.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Garcia Live disc available!
I have absolutely loved this album since first getting it as a record in the 70's. It is the (along with the 2 other Keystone recordings) Garcia album that I keep coming back to over and over. Jerry's singing is as soulful as on any recording he ever made. His gitar playing during this period is a bit more sparse than during later periods, but is as emotional as it gets. Although "Space" and "merls tune" are a bit lacking compared to the Dead's jams, all the other songs are classics. On "It's too late" (my personal favorite) Jerry makes his gitar sing. Merl's keyboards complement Garcia very well. He gives Jerry the room to shine shine shine. If you buy only one Garcia album this is it. (Vol 2 and Keystone Encores rate a close 2nd and 3rd.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Live At Keystone, Vol. 1 [LIVE]
Get this.Get all of the Keystone releases.John Kahn is a fantasticbassist who provides an interesting contrast to the Dead's bass player,Phil Lesh. His playing helps bring out plenty of sweet lyrical magic fromJerry's guitar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blues at Sunrise: Live at Montreux
This is a very well done live recording. Both the material and the sound quality are top notch. The only thing I found missing was some additional material from the festival not on this CD. For that one must get the "Blues at Sunset" CD that contains the rest of the set as well as more excellent recordings from the Wattstax concert.

5-0 out of 5 stars Albert is god!

5-0 out of 5 stars simply stunnig
what you're holding in your hand is one of the very best live blues album ever. I own quite a few albert's album but this one has always found a special place in my heart. Both the setlist and the performances are wonderful and it has my favourite version of i'll play the blues for you. After he says "exscuse me" he unveils a terrific solo that gets you realize what blues power is all about, the interplays with the horns section is stunning and the voice, man, the voice...if you gotta get just one album by this master get this one, you wont be disappointed ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Now IGet it
A long time ago a friend whose music taste I trust told me he had just seen an incredible performance at the Fillmore in NY by " a blues guy named Albert King." I bought all the available albums and didn't get it. Thislive recording captures what I have been hoping for. There is no more powerful performance than Albert's " I'LL Play the Blues For You". "Killing FLoor" does it too.
5-0 out of 5 stars Blues at Sunset
One of the best live recordings of Albert King. Even without the usual horn section on the Wattatax set, it lacks nothing. The rest of the Montreaux set not included on the "Blues At Sunrise" CD are found here and are, again, some of Albert Kings best.

Editorial Review

The blues world lost a treasure when Luther Allison died in 1997, just as he was finally garnering the recognition he so richly deserved. If there's any question of that, this live album, recorded at the 1995 Chicago Blues Festival and at Buddy Guy's Legends, will dispel any such notion. A performer and songwriter of the first order, Allison had the sort of mastery of his instrument that comes from long experience; whether rolling off licks on the "Gambler's Blues/Sweet Little Angel" medley, or playing extended solos on "All the King's Horses," Allison's on the ball and in control at all times. This album contains mostly newer material previously recorded for Alligator Records, like "Soul Fixin' Man," "Bad Love," "All the King's Horses," and "What Have I Done Wrong?" Overall, this is an excellent memorial to a musician who should be remembered. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Blues Album From Late Guitar Slinger Luther Allison
Luther Allison died just as he was on the verge of gaining the recognition in America that he so greatly wanted and richly deserved.
5-0 out of 5 stars Blues Star Makes His Own Way Foreign and Comes Home To the States for a Huge Comback Like We've Never Seen!
Picture this:a blues musician that started out emulating BB King's licks eventually takes over Freddy King's band in Chicago at the peak of when blues are hot!He then goes on to become the only blues musician to record for Motown (at the same time Marvin Gaye is laying down hits!)and not only that his Motown album becomes the highest sold from an unknown's first album ever.To juice up the story a bit more let us say he is the only guitarist that can effectively have a full conversation with his guitar and to in 1960 break the sound barrier with later day Mariah Carey screams!Too good to be true?
5-0 out of 5 stars Luther Is The Man
This Live Blues set from 1995 shortly before his death is a classic. Luther's guitar style has several sounds. His Chicago Blues style with lots of horns, to his party band sound, as well as several slide sets, this is a very impressive album. His 'Gimme Back My Wig' is a slide extravaganta. My favorite, 'All The King's Horses' is a searing, blistering nearly 12 minute version that leaves you panting for more. We will enjoy this one for years to come. This set is truly a masterpiece. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars F for sound
Well this is a total F for sound. I have 3 dif 3 cd players, home, port, and car, and yes they are good ones, car is a Q45 with a Bose. I bought this CD because of the reviews I read here, what is everyone smoking? or is there not that good of stuff avail from Albert? I don't own any other CD's, but I do know about him from the SRV Sessions VHS I have had for a few years, and it sounds pretty good.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome live blues guitar
Albert was at his best live...This is awesome guitar playing and Albert's singing is awesome as well. One listen to this and one realizes that Albert King is truly THE master of the blues guitar. ALL songs are excellent! "Don't throw your love on me so strong" is the VERY BEST BLUES GUITAR PLAYING I've ever heard and that includes SRV, Hendrix and the rest of King's followers. He was the BEST!!! Thursday Night and Live Wire/Blues Power are also MUSTS!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hot Blues!
Albert King recorded this CD on Wednesday June 26, 1968, one day prior to his more popular and better known release, "Thursday Night In San Francisco".This disc represents the first day that Albert performed at the Filmore as the headliner.Prior to that time, he had appeared as the opener for Jimi Hendrix and John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. Albert's "best" performance that evening, as well as the next day, (according to Stax anyway) was originally released by Stax on the "Live Wire/Blues Power" CD.The songs contained on both, the Wednesday and the Thursday CD were thought to be a cut below and were not included.Fortunately for us, Stax took another look at the material, albeit 22 years later, and released the remainder of the material as it occurred on two separate discs. In order to gain a full understanding as to what occurred on those two nights, King fans should purchase all three of these excellent recordings. As with the other two discs, King's performance is outstanding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blown away by Booker
I first got turned on to the genuis of the mighty James Booker by a rehearsal tape with which he played with the Jerry garcia Band (1-7-76). Since then I've intended to make a Booker purchase but unfortunatly he's not the easiest performer to find in the cd bins.
5-0 out of 5 stars Booker tames the piano
This recording is a great, great treasure. We are lucky to have Booker live, and of all the booker albums out, this one is perhaps the most profound. The first two tracks are astonishing, and throughout the album, Booker fuses Chopin, Monk, Fatha' Hines, and Cecil Taylor- but it's pure Booker, that mad genius.5-0 out of 5 stars You would never believe it's only one man playing.
But it's true.I regret I never saw Booker live, though I was in New Orleans while he still blew people's minds at the Maple Leaf. You can't possibly accept that what you hear on this CD is live, one man, nooverdubs. He could sandwich a half dozen classical composers between FatsDomino, Fess and Gershwin before you know what happened. If you have anyappreciation for the piano, buy this, and its companion "Spiders onthe Keys". ... Silvertone Records has done a smart job of resurrecting Buddy Guy's career. When the label signed the Chicago blues guitar master in 1990, the 54-year-old legend hadn't had an American release in nine years. Silvertone introduced him to a new audience by having him play duets with such rock-star admirers as Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, and Jeff Beck on the 1991 album, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The essential moment of terror on a rock-solid album
First, it's Buddy in fine form, Second, it's G.E. Smith and the SNL band, providing excellent support. A fan of Buddy and / or a fan of the blues can't go wrong with this one, but there's a real, raw, "Hellhound On His Trail" moment that makes this a must-have. Even the fans who are moderately familiar with Buddy's history know of his connection to Muddy Waters. During "My Time After A While" (around the 5 minute mark) he does an extended Muddy "Mannish Boy" type of scat that ends with him howling "lookee here, lookee here, lookee here, lookee here" as the band rallies and stomps and thuds around a brutal, paint-peeling guitar solo. Buy this one. NOW.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good. Almost great
Buddy Guy is accompanied by the Saturday Night Live house orchestra on this album, which may only include nine songs, but still clocks in at well over an hour.
4-0 out of 5 stars buddy Guy takes the SNL band to blues school
this is an interesting album.I have been a Buddy Guy fan for a long long time and I've seen him live on a few occasions. While I like the sound of the album and it does have some great moments I just don't get the whole SNL band thing. While great technical musicians they just don't know the blues and it is glaringly obvious when one of them attempts a solo.G.E. Smith's weak excuse for a call and response section with Buddy during, "Damn Right I've Got the Blues" sounds like my cat when she is wining about being hungry.Buddy will throw out some amazing guitar line and smith will answer with something that a ten-year-old would play while learning how to bend the strings.Pathetic!the only other soloist who keeps up with Buddy on this album is the amazing Johnny Johnson on piano.the man is just a legend and he does show it here. This album seems to be another attempt to make Buddy palatable to the casual blues fan, (The ones who think Keb' Mo' is a blues artist), in an attempt to widen his audience and from a financial standpoint I can't blame him or his record company.Ih short, if you are a true Buddy Guy fan you'll find this album to sound pretty waterd down so I wouldn't rush out and buy it.If you are someone who is interested in learning about the blues and have heard about Buddy Guy then I would recommend buying this album simply because Buddy's playing is normally very intense and it may scare off someone who is not familiar with his style so start with this one and then build into the real good stuff. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A+ for the Basie Cats!and AMAZINGLY,the Columbia guys got it right.
I don't have to tell anyone how great these tracks are. How does one guy get all 16 of the greatest swing musicians in the world into one band? This set has some Great surprises: Live sides, and rare alternates, like "It's The Same Old South", (a different take than the version on the vinyl"Superchief")
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Overview Of These Years
A welcome addition in a lovely box with all the beauty of great sound,a 90 page book, a great disc of live material/broadcasts makes this a needed addition to any Basie lover..I also have the Columbia's Essential collections spanning 3 discs but this here is a needed bonus and is still not a substitute for those under rated discs put out earlier...Such a prolific man deserves royal treatment and does some justice to the earlier output..but obviously other reviewers will give you more detail as to songs selection and musicians I just wanted to add appreciation..

5-0 out of 5 stars Seeking Intro to Swing? Start Here
This is a truly great package which you will find yourself listening to again and again. As others mentioned, the four discs here cover several of Basie's bands, so what you get is not simply 90 songs from a single band, which would get quite boring no matter how great any individual band was, but rather choice cuts from different bands of different size and composition over a twenty year period. The result is four discs each with their own distinct sound, each providing a different snapshot of the evolution of swing under Basie.

Editorial Review

Few singers have a story as long and varied as that of Alberta Hunter, whose career spanned most of the 20th century. From the dawn of the classic blues era, through two world wars, a long hiatus, and a fresh start shortly before her death in 1984, Hunter stuck to the rich vocals, full expression, and classical style. Although this recording was made during her 80s, when she came out of retirement to sing at the Cookery in Greenwich Village, her voice, having lessened some in power, had lost none of its charm. The woman who counted such legends as Bessie Smith, Mamie Smith, and Ma Rainey among her contemporaries, and who wrote Bessie Smith's classic hit "Downhearted Blues," here delivers an appealing set of classic blues, including a stunning rendition of "I Got Rhythm." 5-0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars if for no reason other then it is Alberta Hunter!
Was a bit disapointed with the CD.Was hoping it would include the original soundtrack songs from the movie Remember My Name.No such luck.I'll have to continue listening to my LP since this has never been released on CD.But, after getting over that, this is a good set of material. How could one ever go wrong with a Alberta Hunter CD?

5-0 out of 5 stars Can I give 6 stars?
Alberta Hunter may actually have amazed the world with her return to the stages after 80 years old. I have attempt to buy whatever is available from her late years, including tapes, DVD's, LP's, CD's and the like.5-0 out of 5 stars Alberta Hunter at her best!
If you like the blues you will love this collection. The live recording from the Cookery in New York is great. Hunter works the songs as well as the listeners with her abilities and sense of humor. This is a must have for the collector. "Two fisted hard working Rough and ready man" should be the anthem of every one looknig for a mate.I bought 3 copies and have given them to friends. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ray Charles Jazz
I absolutely love jazz, and the only non-jazz music I listen to (often) is Ray Charles.I may only have a best of, this, "The Genius of Ray Charles", and "The Great Ray Charles", but this is probably my favourite one of them all. This cd has a lot jazz tracks, and even features Ray Charles playing alto on a couple of tracks!I love this cd for the jazz tracks but most of all for his signature vocals on Right Time, I Got a Woman, Talkin' 'Bout You, and last but not least Fool For You.The tracks are well organized so you get a mix of both, neither jazz nor vocal tracks are concentrated in one area, which means it's a great listen all the way through. In short, I really enjoy this cd, and recommend it to jazz fans and Ray Charles fans alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Genius' Soul Live
This blew my mind in '58 and it does so again now--and maybe more. This disc contains great jazz instrumentals such as Blues Waltz and In a Little Spanish Town, yet its greatest cuts (and all are great) demonstrate Ray's soul. Check out A Fool For You, for instance. The Right Time's "La Do Day" background singing is cool. My favorite since '58 has been "Talking Bout You." Play it over and over and try to sit still. It brings tears to my eyes. In my view, this is Ray's best record.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome !!1
If one is interested in the early Ray Charles jazz years this is a wonderful example. The album abounds with demonstrations of his virtuosity on piano, and that of other musicians in his large band. Check out Blues Waltz!! A good listen! We won't see his like again. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Simply one of the greatest live blues recordings ever. Hooker plays alone at Soledad, yet the real thrill is hearing him backed at Greenwich Village's Café Au-Go-Go in 1966 by Muddy Waters and his band, including pianist Otis Spann, unsung harmonica giant George Smith, Francis Clay on drums, and guitarists Sammy Lawhorn and Luther Johnson. All are at the height of their abilities, but it's Hooker who works like a hoodoo conjurer, making misery rain down in "Seven Days" and "When My First Wife Left Me." This August night's reading of "I'm Bad Like Jesse James" ranks among the most intimidating vocal performances ever taped. His guitar and baritone singing sink to rarely heard depths of the blues--that secret place in the music (known only to its absolute masters) where it becomes an elemental force. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Great Live Albums in One CD
Two very different, but great live John Lee CD's in one package! Live at The Cafe Go-Go catches John Lee with Muddy Waters band including the great Otis Spann on Piano.Muddy even plays guitar on one of the tunes.Sound quality is excellent and John Live is in fine form.Bad like Jesse James is one of the creepiest songs made and is made even more haunting by Spann's parse piano.Live at Soledad prison catch John Lee is his Endless Boogie phase, which I love.Sound quality is very good and his band, including his son John Lee Jr., are tight. This contains all but two cuts of the original Live at Soledad album. These two tunes were sung by John Lee Jr.Great album for anyone who enjoys the blues, live blues, John Lee, or enjoys Otis Spann. Album should be the staple of any basic bblues collection. I highly recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Live John Lee...
Hearing John Lee Hooker backed by the Muddy Water's band from the 1960's is a real treat. The version of "I'm Bad Like Jessie James" that opens the CD is one of the most menacing songs I've ever heard; John Lee describes in detail how he will "take care of" a former friend he took in who went around town telling everybody that he slept with John Lee's wife. This song is a perfect example of how John Lee Hooker was the personification of badass. John Lee also runs through some of his classics like "One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer" and "Bang Bang Bang Bang". I prefer the Cafe Au Go Go set to the Soledad Prison set, but both sets are worth hearing and are full of good performances from John Lee and the band. This is definitely worth getting if you are fan of John Lee Hooker or the blues.

5-0 out of 5 stars What an incredible man!
It's hard not to get shivers when listening to this recording.John Lee Hooker had such an incredible voice and it's as if his singing and playing encapsulates all misery imaginable. He extracted so much emotion from these songs that made me feel as though I'd actually lived the experience. It's so incredibly painful to listen to in places that I expected the heavens to open up in response. This is a man who knew what he was doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exception to the rule
Tribute albums aoften strike me as a collection of poor imitations of the original- but this is different. First and foremost, everyone on it was close to SRV, from his brother on down. They knew him, they played with him, and they understood his style. Second, and perhaps even more importantly, this was a live concert. Instead of a bunch of gunslingers trying to out-SRV each other in a studio, you have a group of great musicians, each a great stylist in their own right, and none of whom has to prove anything to anyone. The result is magical music that serves as a true tribute to that great Texas guitar player, Stevie Ray Vaughn.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fitting tribute
This CD has the best blues musicians in the world paying tribute to SRV.
5-0 out of 5 stars What A Tribute To The King Of Blues!
I loved the tribute to stevie ray vaughan I mean who would'nt! Their are so many influential blues guitarist on this album including Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, BB.King, Robert Cray, Jimmie Vaughan, Bonnie Raitt, and more....Their are also many special guests including Dr. John, and Art Neville. As well as the great guitarist, and special guests their is also the orginal member's of Stevie Ray Vaughan and double trouble including Chris Layton, and Tommy Shannon. This live show was done in the Austin City Limits show. I think everybody does great rendition's of Stevie Ray Vaughan's songs including Jimmie Vaughan's: Texas Flood, B.B.King's: Telephone Song, and the powerful rendition of Eric Clapton's: Ain't Gone'N Give Up On Your Love. A really good trio with everybody is Tick Tock, and the Srv Shuffle very cool. This is truely a must have for any guitarist this one is truely" for you!!!!Highly Recomened! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Albert Collins live
I am a big fan of Albert's guitar playing and I bought this CD hoping that his last material before his death would be good to have and listen to. I am not disappointed with Albert's playing but the recording quality is woeful and it is not worth paying the money for unless you have to have all Albert's recordings, his other live material is much better. Sorry but it's simply not up to scratch for a 1990's recording

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Live Blues
This is one of my favorite recordings from one of my favorite guitarists. If you want to play in Texas, you have to play music that people can dance to.Cowboys, oil workers, black folks and Mexican Americans all love to dance in Texas and expect to hear dancin' music when they go out to clubs. This influence is heard in most of the works of Mr. Collins, a Texas native, and especially in this CD.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fine latter-day Collins
These performances were recorded shortly before Collins' death in late 1993, but rather than sounding tired, they offer proof that the "Master of the Telecaster" remained a commanding stage presence until the end.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Archival Release
There are a number of Otis Rush live albums in the bins these days, but this one might just take the cake, catching him before his adopted hometown audience at the Wise Fools Pub in Chicago, IL in the mid-70's. He's got a crack band on hand and an enthusiastic audience in tow for a galvanizing performance of originals and standards. One of the knocks against Rush's live albums by critics is that the soloing has occasionally gottenout of control at the expense of the band, but not here. Everyone is really tight and this context makes his guitar solos even more explosive. The album takes its name from the emotional lament "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)" that he originally cut as part of his epochal Cobra recordings in the 1950's, and the version heard here is just as haunting. He wrings every ounce of energy out of that song and another emotional ballad, "Gambler's Blues" which builds to an amazing climax. "Feeling so Bad" and "You're Breaking My Heart" bring the emotional turmoil to the boiling point, before the band lets the audience off the hook with a blasting up-tempo version of "Sweet Little Angel," originally made famous by B.B. King. This is an extraordinary document of the Chicago blues scene and one of the finest musicians to grace its stages. Highest possible recommendation.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Dissappointed Sound is too thin & listless Other New Montreaux1986 Live CD Much Better!
First off, I'm a fan of Delmark Records & fully support their label & all the good they've done for the blues, but in my personal opinion this isn't one of them. I bought this album & Otis Live in Montreux 1986 at the same time, and this album sounds incredibly thin, weak and pale compared to the Montreux album in regards to the recording of it, the songs & the performance. My analogy to the other album is the San Antonio Spurs playing basketball against a junior high school team. Maybe I would have felt better about the songs & performance of this album if the recording quality was better. It is sooo thin and while there is clarity there is no depth or oomph whatsoever. The Montereux album is very well recorded & to me is the best live Otis Rush album I ever heard. Anyway, I'm sorry to give any Delmark product a bad review but I'd avoid this one & get the Montreux CD. If you want to support Delmark , buy their excellent Jimmy Dawkins "Fast Fingers" CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable addition to the Rush catalog.
With his original Cobra recordings still being Otis's best, his live recordings have consistently been among his best 'new' works. Up until now , the live cds were perhaps a little -too- new: No problems, but a little beefed up in tone, not as representative of his original sound as this cd. This can never be duplicated, unfortunately, even by Otis himself.Necessary. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Original LIVE tracks you can't find anywhere else
This album has the best live recordings of Ray's classics "A fool for you" and "Drown in my own Tears".Just those two songs are enough reason to buy the album.

4-0 out of 5 stars The LP/CD Issue
The LP begins with The Right Time 4:06 to open one concert; then picks it up again to start off the second concert which was recorded in mono. The first question I looked at was which order works.I have owned the LP for years, but I cannot say which order is accurate - maybe going back to the orginal 2 albums might give a hint.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best CD ever
As a junior in high school (Druid Hills), I and several of my classmates attended the radio station WAOK 25th anniversary show at Herndon Stadium in Atlanta (1959). The Ray Charles set was one of many. The show was and remains the best I've ever seen, but the performance by Ray Charles, his band and the Raylettes was without equal. The energy of "What'd I Say", "tell The Truth" and "Night Time Is The Right Time" was incredible. The set was recorded on a WAOK monural tape recorder and later played over the air. The response of the radio audience was overwhelming, resulting in the ultimate release of the Atlantic album (which we bought at the Central Record Shop at 5 points, on the day it was released). We were white teenagers who loved the music played on WAOK (a predominately black station) and even then we realized it was never going to get any better than

2-0 out of 5 stars Playing the piano v. singing
I bought this CD, despite the excellent comments of other reviewers on the sound quality, because I wanted the most recent album I could find. On "Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack," my only other album, Dr. John plays the piano. Here, half the time or more, he is singing. You like that or you don't. To me, it's the equivalent of a talented musician who decides to spend his creative energy taking up juggling.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Impressions
Wasnt aware of this CD - saw it on the J.Booker page...havent rated it either as I havent listened to it yet, (it wont even let me pick no stars -doh! amazon) but regarding others comments - from the samples provided (very handy) it sounds like he is playing on an older electric piano, not acoustic, and agree it sounds badly balanced/recorded..I like to hear what he is playing for transcription purposes. Some of the older Booker recordings are bad but the playing is on an acoustic and comes across clear.5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. John Stands alone, all by hisself and Shines doing it!
