Editorial Review

One of the greatest concert recordings of all time. How could it be less, with B.B. King performing some of his best material before a literally captive audience in an Illinois prison? "Worry, Worry" and "How Blue Can You Get" take on deeper meanings here, although King works the latter's camp lyrics as if he were in a juke joint. His mix of down-home humility and commanding stagecraft is instantly appealing. And his guitar barks, sings, and squeals with such authority that this is a bravura performance from the first bent, soul-searing note. A true desert-island disc. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Arguably B.B. King's Best
Fans often call B.B. King the king of the blues guitar, but if B.B. were only a brilliant guitarist he wouldn't be a household name for decades. B.B. King is also a powerful singer, a terrific interpreter of others' material, an effective bandleader and - most importantly - a thoroughly professional entertainer. You can experience all B.B. King's sides on the "Cook County Jail" CD.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best of BB King
This CD captures the very essence of what makes Blues Boy King the King of the Blues. The power of BB's music thunders througout the CD. This album has the best rendition of "The Thrill is Gone" I have ever heard, and I've heard just about all the versions he has done over the years. You can almost see him crooning to the microphone with his eyes closed, and Lucille gives this song so much more with her solo at the end. If anything buy this CD for the "The Thrill is Gone"; as soon as you get it turn it up, sit down and close your eyes...

3-0 out of 5 stars Eh
I don't get it.

Editorial Review

Lightnin' Hopkins, the seminal Texas bluesman, was rediscovered in the 1960s when the folk revival made folk and country-blues musicians hot news. This seven-CD set includes much of Hopkins's work during that period, though he recorded for so many different labels that getting everything is well-nigh impossible. This is a good start, though, including as it does some concert recordings in addition to studio reissues and interviews. Hopkins's mastery of mood and technique makes this a chronicle not only of historical interest, but musical as well; while Hopkins's musical style didn't change much over the course of his multidecade career, he was certainly among the best at what he did. 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Collection
Yes, it is expensive but if you are interested in the blues then it's a really good deal.As has already been explained, the 7th disc is only interviews. But the 6 discs of music are incredible.I had to work up my nerve to make this purchase a few years ago.Luckily, I did get a discount but I still say it's worth the hefty price tag.I'm listening to 'Last Night Blues' right now and it's just as haunting today as it was when I first bought the set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blues in a box set
This seven disk, expensive box set is often a difficult pill to swallow, but I am glad that I did.On six disks twelve Lightnin' albums from the 60's are combined. If you are interested in Lightnin', do the math. The Complete Prestige/Bluesville Rocordings is a value. The seventh disk is full of interviews that may seem dull to some, but to a fan willing to spend $ to get the blues they are a welcome addition.A very interesting way to learn about the man is from his own voice in interviews like these. The liner notes are a simple histoy, a few pictures and a discography.Again, I am glad I bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rated Five Stars With A Footnote
This is one fantastic collection of music! However, I was a little disappointed by the apparent lack of effort that went into the finished product. With such a comprehensive assortment of music, I expected to find at least liner notes or a booklet with some biographical material or reviews. Also, it should be noted that the final disk in this set is only spoken word. While the novelty of it is awesome, and you get to here Lightnin's stories first hand, at my first listening I was somewhat off set because I wasn't expecting it. However, those things aside, this set is worth every penny! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars If Wolfman Jack sang for CCR you w/have Omar & The Howlers..
If Wolfman Jack sang for CCR you would have Omar & The Howlers. This concert was recorded in 1991 in Amsterdam. It seems that Omar is much more popular in Europe then he is here. Too bad because this is great Texas style rock n roll. It's a solid concert and the strongest tracks are "Mississippi Hoo Doo" which sounds an awful lot like "Run through the Jungle", and they stay in the CCR mode with a cover of John Fogerty's "Born on the Bayou". The rest of the concert is all original and includes their hit "Hard Times in the Land of Plenty" and some great blues guitar in a song called "Lee Anne".
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the real thing, Omar truly is the man.
In the mid-80's I caught Omar and his Howlers at the Paramount in Seattle. This was before we were assimilated by California and now the east coast. In those days it wasn't real easy to get us fired up at a show, no matterthe artist. Well, to a four fifths house Omar and the boy's showed littleor no mercy. About half way through I was aware that I hadn't even sat downyet, looked around and people were litterally standing in their chairs, pumping their fists and giving reasonable facsimile's of a rebel yell.He/they blew the roof off of the joint and had us screaming for more. I waslucky enough to be able to hang out with him afterwords and discuss theawsome Austin scene including Miss Luanne Barton and Eric Johnson. What acool guy. He even invited us to dinner. I've been looking for a cd withsome of his older songs for at least 10 yrs, and finally, thank God, Ifound it. If you have not heard Hard Times in The Land OF Plenty and someof the others on this jewel, buy it. Now. If you've never seen the greatone live, do so. As soon as possible. He is the real thing, not a prettyboy poser.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another side of Robben's playing
Robben Ford, one of the best of the studio guitarists of his generation, shows that he has also mastered being a band leader and playing live. This set, taken from an acoustic set at the Bay Area jazz club Yoshi's, was originally recorded for broadcast by the San Francisco FM station KFOG, so it has nice sound. Don't be intimidated by the "authorized bootleg" subtitle, this is a professional recording of a 1995 date.
5-0 out of 5 stars Robben Ford Unplugged
Give me more, give me more. Clean and funky.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of the best ensemble playing you'll ever hear
The rapport between Robben, Tom, Bill and Roscoe is very evident on this hot, and way too short set. Tom Brechtlein and Roscoe Beck deserve big, big kudos for their outstanding support of Robben. My favorites are Lovin' Cup (ultra funky guitar figure), Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin', and Start it Up.Absolutely some of the best blues playing you'll ever hear. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Gems Make it Worthwhile for Hardcore Fans
If you like Taj Mahal, you probably don't need much convincing to buy his live reggae album. That being said, the steel drum work on this album sounds a bit like that you'd hear on the deck of a Carnival cruise ship and the "Do You Think I'm Sexy?" tease on track three will make anyone under the age of 35 blush in shame (say it ain't so, Taj!).Frankly some of the cuts are downright silly (#7 and the aforementioned #3, especially).1-0 out of 5 stars Not a fan of the steel drums
I love Taj Mahal. He is a brilliant artist and a charismatic performer.HOWEVER, I can't stand this album.Steel drums are nice and all, but for an entire album, it was a bit much for me.If you LOVE steel drums, then buy this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jerry and Merl jams
There's a number of discs out with Jerry and Merl and this is just one of them. Loose jams here with good Jerry renditions of the few numbers on the disc. Not his best and hot his worst. One complaint is that the material is released over various discs instead of one set. The Dead rarely do this but for some reason, this came out piecemeal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lay Back & Jam
I'm a Jerry freak. Love his stuff more than the Dead. This disk containssome fantastic selections that are very representive of the typical showplayed by these guys. They are slow, melodic, laid-back and jam-filled. Ifyou like rock, roll, rhythm, blues & soul, you'll love this disk. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This 78-minute collection from four appearances at the famed Swiss blues festival displays the varied strengths of Luther Allison's music. The tensile, screaming guitar work and squawling vocal attack Allison is known for are here, of course, but there's another layer at work. A 1984 set with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, for instance, offers the Muddy Waters-like "Back Down South" (on which Allison lays down his ax in favor of a harp), as well as the Otis Redding-style shouts of "Memories." The most intense moments come on "Bad News Is Coming" and "Bad Love" (with the Memphis Horns backing him up), when Allison pushes through to the pulse of his muse with a six-string expression of confusion and grit. They make his death in the late '90s poignant and that much more palpable. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Red Hot Live Chicago Blues from Switzerland
Fans of the blues have always been blessed to have the Montreux Jazz Festival since it has produced a huge number of classic performances with just about every great blues artist. When comparing Luther to his fellow Chicago bluesmen, his sound is usually more similar to Buddy Guy & Otis Rush than Muddy Waters due to his typically intense guitar solos.Just about everybody has recorded Willie Dixon's 'Gambler's Blues,' but Luther's version recorded at Montreux back in '76 absolutely smokes. His extended version of 'Little Red Rooster' heats things up with the same intensity.'Bad News is Coming' recorded in '84 & 'Bad Love' recorded in '94 are two other fiery tracks.I also highly recommend Luther's 'Live in Chicago' CD (recorded in '97).Between the two live CD's, they encompass the majority of Luther's best work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Luther at his best live
Luther Allison was one of those artists that seemed to play better live than in the studio. This CD is compiled with performances over almost 20 years. Even though some of the material is very familiar, Luther has a fresh take on the songs and he delivers all of them with a lot of energy. There's really not a weak cut on the disc and for those of us who never saw Luther in concert, this is a great memento. Many of the cuts feature some fine jams and the disc is a very generous length also.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well, okay......
If you like your blues played loud and frenzied, more like blues-rock than Muddy Waters, this album should be a treat.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best solo Texas Blues performance I have ever heard!
Whether you like hard-driving rock-n-roll or down-and-dirty blues, you will thoroughly enjoy this live performance from 1964 featuring Lightnin' and his pulsating acoustic guitar.Lightnin's unique skill with the trueTexas style of blues guitar playing proves that it does not take a three orfour piece band to either rock the blues or get soulfully low-down on ablues ballad. This CD has it all:rockin' rhythms, great melodies, soulfulmoanings, great lyrics, and Lightnin's quick country wit and interactionwith the audience. After listening to Lightnin' play the openingguitar solo to "Baby,Please Don't Go" it is apparent that he hasan understanding of how to play some incredibly deep sounding blues withthe guitar that few, if any, modern artists are capable of recapturingtoday. "My Black Cadillac" and "Come Go Home WithMe" are perfect illustrations ofhow Texas Blues have been a heavyinfluence on modern day rock-n-roll. On these two songs Lightnin' lays downa heavy Texas Blues beat with his acoustic guitar that is at the very foundation of rock-n-roll. In a slight contrast, "The Twister" isa ballad that also moves and grooves, but with more of a true blues thanrock-n-roll feel."It's Crazy" and "Mojo Hand" areclassic examples of howthe lyrics of a song can thoroughly entertain anaudience while at the same time being powered by the classic Texas bluesbeat."My Babe" and '"Mean Old Frisco" aremedium-tempo songs with memorable melodies that you swear you know you haveheard somewhere else and you know you will always remember."SunGoin'Down and "I'm A Stranger" areslow, mournful blues playedand sang the way you always thought blues should be rendered.Afterlistening to this CD it is obvious that Lightnin's voice and his guitarplaying perfectly complement each other and blend together to produce someof the deepest, most powerful blues ever performed. ... Editorial Review

Memphis's Jimmy King had to drop the "little" he used to carry before his name, because this scalding 1999 concert--fired by his eloquent guitar and soul-dipped voice--proves he's become a big talent. Live tracks are supplemented by four high-energy studio cuts from 1994 with the Memphis Horns cranking up the greasy-funk factor. But the real excitement here is in the live tunes, especially a stone-chiseled "Drowning on Dry Land," on which Jimmy chokes and bends the fat, soaring notes of his Gibson Flying V in raw homage to his late mentor, Albert King. Jimmy's even learned to sing a little like Albert, taking his time and finishing every slow phrase with the same kind of hang-in-the-air vibrato he applies to his bold six-stringing. Instrumental opener "The Ghetto" benefits from Jimmy's heavy wah-wah attack, and young King keeps his guitar tone loud and roaring even when he's handling dance-beat workouts from the pen of his hometown hero, Willie Mitchell. King smoothes things out a bit for the prickly solo in "It Ain't the Same No Mo" that ends the concert with a flourish, wedding Santana's Latin inflections with Stevie Ray Vaughan's arching tone. But for the most part, it's plain that King likes to play rough. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT LAST CD FROM A KILLER GUITARIST!

5-0 out of 5 stars Memphis Soul/Blues Guitar
Jimmy King's new disk "Live At Monterey" is in my heavy rotation at present. It is a part live (hence the title)and part studio disk. King was born Manuel Gales and served as Albert King's rhythm guitarist during the late eighties.Albert King became his mentor and after leaving Albert's band he adopted the King name. The disk serves as sort of a tribute to his mentor with no less than 6 of the 11 cuts associated with Albert King. Jimmy King has stated that his biggest influences are Albert King and Jimi Hendrix. This cd gives an illustration of that. The first cut "The Ghetto" contains wah-wah drenched guitar from the Hendrix trick bag while cuts such as the slow blues "Drowning On Dry Land" contain the string bending attack favored by Albert King.It is worth noting that Albert and Jimmy King both play Gibson Flying V guitars and are/were left handed (as was Hendrix). This makes the similarity between their styles even more evident. The Memphis soul/blues vibe is even stronger on the last four studio cuts in which King's band is augmented by Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love of the Memphis Horns. Another aspect of the Memphis connection is that King is from Memphis and also chooses to cover "Living In The Danger Zone" and "It Ain't The Same No More" both written by Willie Mitchell of Memphis Hi Records fame. This Memphis soul/blues vibe reminds me of the Stax sides that Albert King cut in Memphis. "Wrapped Up In Love Again" and "Floodin' In California" are among the many highlights. Along with Son Seals, King appears to be the best of Albert King's many admirers. His mixture of blues, soul and rock should make him a rising star with possible crossover appeal. If you are an Albert King disciple (like myself) or enjoy contemporary blues do yourself a favor and pick this up immediately!

5-0 out of 5 stars The most influential blues guitarist ever!
I could bore you with compiling a list of the musicians in the rock, blues, jazz, and new age field who were influenced by this master of electric blues but I will refrain from doing so. Albert King was one of those whose playing inspired me to learn guitar.I thought "heck, it sounds easy enough for me to play". Aah the naive thoughts of youth! Truth be told often the easiest sounding parts are the hardest to play and play with authority. Albert plays a lot of the same licks but inflects them differently in delivery - a talent that is in and of itself notable. He finds ways to transcend the patterns that all - himself included - fall into when playing. To quote Robert Palmer, his solos combine both "torrential power and striking freshness" and his style works not only in traditional shuffle style blues but also with r & b, funk, soul, jazz, and rock stylings backing him up. 5-0 out of 5 stars Tim
This is a very solid cd!Albert King is as close to musical perfection as there will be, this is a GREAT example of why.He puts everything he has in each song, each note, each word... This cd takes you into the crowd for that concert, no matter where you listen to this cd you gain a sense of feeling for King's onstage presence; in word--captivating.Each track on here is clearly recorded and very well presented. This cd is NO gamble--you will enjoy it for many, many years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hats up! This is a great record, pure golden electric blues.
Almost all tunes are classics of the blues repertoire, or even jazz revisited such as "Watermelon Man". I have really enjoyed listening these pieces, the crispy riffs in the masterpiece "KansasCity" as well as the slow bars in "Blues at Sunrise", andforemost his duet with Rory Gallagher in "As the years go passingby". Don't miss it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this CD!
Let me first say that I do NOT generally like "live" albums. But, this is fantastic. I am a huge Tab Benoit fan and this CD is one of his best. According to Tab, he does not try to blow you away; he creates a "feeling" and lets the music flow from that feeling. Thats exactly what happens here. Tab's brand of blues is peppered with cajun hot sauce without sounding campy or silly. The highs are high and the lows are oh so low. All of his CDs have a "live" feel to them; this one also has an audience. Its just great music .

4-0 out of 5 stars He's Genuine
I haven't lived in New Orleans in a while, but I did live there long enough to recognize real Tiptinas style cuts, when I hear them. This guy delivers that sound, in grand style. If you are a fan of N'Awlins style soul/blues, as I am, this CD will give you your fix. Blues fans of Keb Mo will hear some similarities. Tab's guitar playing has that similar "fuzzy" quality to it. But Tab is definitely on a tighter track when he kicks out the Albert Collins riffs on "Too Many Dishes." It's almost as if I were put into a Sherman and Peabody wayback machine to a live Tips/Collins gig, via 1983. 3-0 out of 5 stars Solid Jams
Although a fan of Tab's, this CD leaves me wanting.Don't get me wrong its a good listen a well worth purchasing for fans, but it doesn't grab me the way Nice and Warm and Standing on Banks do.If you are a fan and looking at buying it, you won't be disappointed, but if you're new to Tab you'd do better to get one of other CDs first. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Smokin' Blues!
Great recording, done live at 'The Saloon' in Frisco (one of my favorite hangouts whenever I'm there).By the way Amazon, the title is "Drinkin' Triples till You're Seeing Double" NOT "Drinkin' Triples till you're Single"!! (although if you drank TOO many triples that could happen too!).

5-0 out of 5 stars Johnny and Andy Just play some smokin' hot blues
One of the best live blues shows I have ever heard.Andy Just on harmonica just blows the doors off the place with "Honey Hush" and "Tramp".Strangely, I've bought CD's by Andy Just and it just doesn't seem to be the same guy.I guess they caught lightning in a bottle that night. The live audience just makes it all the better.Enjoy!P.S. Later version of the Door Slammers without Andy Just don't measure up either. This CD is the one!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Giant of the Blues!
Last Call is the most unique and moving piece of Blues History that this blues fan has ever heard. I saw guitarist & producer Peter Malick accept The WC Handy Award for this disc (Historic Album of the Year, 2001)in Memphis last May. If you love DEEP BLUES, don't go no further...'cause this is the real deal.3-0 out of 5 stars A good live show in parts
Otis sounds great as does his wife and Peter Malick. The problem that I had with the performance is that Luther Johnson's guitar is way out of tune for the whole set. I have stop listening after a while. It would have been a great recording otherwise. Just my 2 cents.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Blues collection should be without this gem
"Last Call" transports its listeners to a moment of blues history that should not be missed. The time is April 1970. The place is the Boston Tea Party where blues pianist Otis Spann plays one of his last concerts before his untimely death 3 weeks later. He is joined by his wife Lucille who performs most of the vocals since Spann is too ill to sing himself. His piano playing transcends his imminent death.Other talented musicians include guitarist, Luther Johnson, and Peter Malick. Malick produced these tapes as a tribute to his friend and mentor Otis Spann.Kudos to Malick and Mr. Cat Music. The late, great Otis Spann must be listening and watching with pride. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As Live and As Good As It Gets
Recently got this and sereral other Doug MacLeod CDs from Amazon. As usual,I was not disappointed. Doug MacLeod is the BEST blues man since Dave "Snaker" Ray first came on the scene.5-0 out of 5 stars Great, down home blues with a twist
I had seen these guys performing at BB King's in LA and was happy to see they had captured their onstage magic on tape. They have a great rapport and it shows on this CD....really funny and entertaining. So much blues sounds the same out there, but these guys are unique and stand out.

4-0 out of 5 stars ACOUSTIC BLUES PARTY
Some of the music lovers complain that the blues is too sad and downbeat."Live As it Gets" refutes that notion with funny songs,ad-libs,thoughts and introductions. This a one night acoustic blues party from a couple of guys who really play raw music. These are honest songs from a guys perspective talking about everything from a pretty woman "Tight White Pants" to a wife trying to turn her husband into eatinghealth food, "Doug's First ProtestSong".This is a good live cd that will get both men and women a few laughs, solidifying we do come from different planets. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars John one of the last true blues artist
These cd represent John live without a band, just his guitar, dobro and voice which he use's as an instrument. These are sitting on the front/back porch, train station blues.Covering all of the original blues artist Willie Dixon,Muddy Waters,Robert Johnson and playing true to their oringinal feel and adding his own sense of emotion to them.I just came back from seeing John live, had the distinct pleasure of meeting him and talking to him. He is a perfect gentleman and a genuine american artist who will be remembered along with John Lee Hooker,Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and all of america's great blues artist. If you truly love real blues, not the fabricated stuff that fills the airwaves. Buy any John Hammond cd or Charlie Musselwhite cd. They are about the only true blues musicians left.

5-0 out of 5 stars John Hammond - Live
A few years after this CD was released, I was lucky enough to see John Hammond live from a second-row seat at a small theater outside of Chicago. That performance included many of the songs included on this CD, and this recording is faithful to what John delivers live: pure, raw, honest blues that, once heard, will inspire you to see him live.Once you see him live, the experience will stay with you for a lifetime.5-0 out of 5 stars This is another cd that needed so much stars!
Fantastic,from the begining until the end...!!This cd will be ever under rated with only five stars.It's a superb album,what clarity,what emotional moments,and...what repertoire...Willie Dixon;Charlie Patton;Robert Johnson;Sleepy John Estes....ReallyRead more
